Way too early.

Ok for the last couple of Mondays a garbage truck has been making pickups at 5:30am in the alley behind my apartment, waking me up. Isn't this too early?

The adult center that I believe provided various services on Sheffield next to Leona's has closed. Anyone have an idea what happened and what is next for this property? Tear down or new tenants?

Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

They were taking down the Muskie's sign this morning.

Demo at Ashland and Melrose?

Any idea what is happening there now? Last I heard Target was not going in. Anyone heard anything new?

  • With our luck it will be more yoga studios, gymbories, nail salons and daycares because we don't have enough of those, LOL!

You need those mattress stores. Chicago is #1 in bed bug infestation throughout the nation. Those cigar smoking White men that invested in those mattress franchises are more "aware" than you. Commercial leases there are expensive there, obviously they're doing good with their ROI.

Phenominal Designer Showhourse right behind my apartment in No. Center/Ravenswood

Hi Neighbors, I live on the 4000 n. block of Paulina (12 yrs.) I don't post often but wanted to tell people there is a designer show-house right in our neighborhood -usually they are in the burbs. Totally worth seeing! You can get plenty of ideas for decorating; colors, textures, fabrics, decor placement and just going through the house is a beautiful experience. The designers are so very nice and informative. So glad I went. They are only open until the 30th. The proceeds go towards prevention of Child Abuse so a lot of love went into this. Wish the mayor would come to see this- after all he lives on the street.

Methadone clinic!

Yesterday, there are flyers going around in the neighborhood concerning a new methadone clinic being opened on Belmont Ave. and Oakley .I called the 32nd Ward office and confirmed this. This is not a rumor but a fact. I don't understand this type of business being allowed before asking the residents first. Not saying that people don't deserved to be helped but maybe in a medical district might be an appropriate setting. Also I understand that the State is responsible for allowing this zoning regulation to happen. This makes me very nervous , be aware.

Addison porch robbery

I called police Friday, about 2:00 p.m.
after witnessing a male, black, with short dread locks, about 20-25 years take a package off a neighbor's porch then walk east on Addison street. He hung out at the bus stop at Addison and Wolcott, let the bus pass by, then crossed the street to take the package. As far as I know he wasn't caught.

  • This has happened to us 3-4x in the year that we've lived in Roscoe Village and a couple of times, it's occurred within minutes of the UPS truck leaving. The truck must be followed.

  • ChiJen, that is exactly what is happening. These thieves track delivery trucks, knowing that they will leave packages in unsecured locations if no one answers the door. I avoid UPS deliveries if at all possible because of this. I've never had UPS do this.

If you are having an item delivered by UPS delivery and suspect you will not be home to receive it, leave alternative instructions when you place your order for an item: "If no response at delivery address, please ring any apartment in bldg (or specify another apartment #)" or "If no response at delivery address, please deliver next door (give exact address)." I believe if you give an address close to yours, they will deliver as requested. At the very least, leave an instruction NOT to leave the delivery in an unsecured location.

  • To me, asking where you grew up (ie. in the past), I think it's fine to generalize. Or if she said "here", that means anywhere in Chicagoland to me. It threw me because the woman was almost rude about it. No need for that. You're right though...New Yorkers are pretty snooty about the B&T crowd.

XIPPO (Bar @ Damen/Grace) - Noise Out of Control!

These Xippo patrons are out of control. I can hear them coming a block away, then they congregate....And get louder and louder. I've called the police but of course they're gone by the time/if they show. Plan on letting the alderman know about it.

  • Thanks for the heads up, Kevin. I never even noticed the sign changed back to Xippo until you posted (I live across the street from the bar). They 'appear' to have closed up shop for the past year with the exception of the occasional paint and wine party. It's been blessedly quiet ever since and it's been a joy. I hope this isn't a sign that their loud, obnoxious Eurotrash dance parties will resume and once again destroy our neighborhood's peace and quiet.

  • Wow I didn't know EB brought back the old posts too.
Still a few drunks passing through, but it's much better now that Xippo is gone.

Nah, not without there actually being a permit posted. But from the commencement of underground work, to completion? You really think that can't be done in 5 months?

Of course, the whole situation reinforces the view that it's impossible for a business to get things done in Chicago--if a large-ish, local, business like Malanti's can't get things to happen, then who can?

But then, it's also possible that they like to do a single project at a time, and while the Oak Park Malnati's opened basically on time, the West Loop one (where Ina's was) appears to be a bit behind schedule. So that might be the main delay.

In any case, barring acts of god, or too many plane shadows cracking the slab, there's no reason that they can't go from actively starting underground utility work to open in 150 days.

  • I hope I lose my bet.
