Yesterday they tore down the old Alley building to make way for a proposed 80 unit development. These images are where the iconic Alley mural once was.

I first went to The Alley as a 20 year old kid; unsure of herself but bound to become otherwise. I bought a $99 leather biker jacket that I think they were running a sale on so I could afford it. It was heavier than hell.

I still have that jacket; and every button, scuff, and scratch on it represents the journey I took from there to here. It is a prized possession.

As my daughter navigates her road of discovery, I still go to The Alley to get her funky socks, leopard patterened shoes, and fingerless gloves (her favorite). I want her to know that she has room to be different, independent, and creative as she practices kindness, respect, and humility.

The mural being destroyed leaves me sad.

Do you have a fond memory of The Alley? Something that you look back on and smile?

  • Holly 15 year East Lakeview Resident.

This makes me so sad and pissed at the same time.

  • Lynn Olejniczak Life-long Chicagoan, who loves her city.

Stop signs are not optional.

I know this is a recurring theme here on EB, but come on folks. I've watched numerous kids and parents walking to/from school nearly get hit by people coasting through intersections by Bell. It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.

  • Debby in Lincoln Square 20 yr. resident

I agree cars are rolling through stop signs BUT I've also taught my children how to cross the street safely. There is a current theme of pedestrians and bike riders thinking they can do whatever they want and a lot of problems are occurring because of this. Mutual respect should solve this problem. Have a safe day EVERYONE :)

There's a certain expectation as a pedestrian that a vehicle will come to a stop at a stop sign. Rolling through a stop at 20+ MPH is not acceptable in any scenario. Period. Do some pedestrians walk without looking? Absolutely. But that is another conversation all together. When you are...

If the intersection has a stop sign come to a complete stop. If the intersection is marked no right on red, don't turn until the light changes. If the speed limit is posted 30, drive 30 (or less). You're arriving at your destination a couple minutes earlier is NOT worth putting yourself or others in harms way.

Monthly parking spot needed please

Would anyone have or know of a monthly parking space for under $140 per month between Grace(3800N)-Montrose(4400N) and the Lake to Graceland Cemetery? My nephew is starting his lease in the 800 block of Cuyler next week. Posting here because I can't seem to get the Buena Park neighborhood to come up for posting. Thanks so much.

Try the garage at Halsted Flats. It's just south of Grace on Halsted.

  • Try calling Scotland Yards, they have a lot at the corner of broadway and buena ave. you do have to call multiple times as they have weird hours and they take a bit to call back sometimes. There's also a parking garage at the apt building at the corner of buena and hazel, I believe they are called Buena Shores. Another place is the parking lot on Clarendon and south of buena ave, I believe they offer monthly parking as well.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you know the proper way to throw out a real Christmas tree? Can it be put in an alley next to the garbage/recycling cans?

My neighbor asked me this question and I'm curious what the answer is.

  • RT Here

It's a shame to see all these folks still dumping trees in the alley.

  • Holly 15 year East Lakeview Resident.

I live in the Dakota building and we had 5 trees thrown in the alley. They sat there for weeks. If you are gonna buy a tree be responsible and know how to dispose of it properly.

Public Hearing on Monday, March 9 for Rise and Galleria Liquors Mixed-Use Redevelopment

A public hearing has been scheduled for the proposed mixed-use transit oriented development for 3401-09 N. Southport Avenue on Monday, March 9 at 7:00 PM at Mystic Celt.

The following is now known:
A 4-story building with retail on the first floor
33 apartments with starting rent at $1,500
6 parking spaces with one being a handicapped spot

The project will be presented by the developer to all that attend the West Lakeview Neighbors meeting. See the renderings here:

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2015/01/public-hearing-march-9-2015-for.html

  • RubyRed Dancer, Drummer, Cyclist

jjkenyon, Yes, it's true, there are other residential developments along the tracks, but you sure as hell won't catch me ponying up $1,500 per month for that kind of noise pollution. The "benefit" of living on the same block as Gap an Athleta isn't really that much a draw either in my opinion.

  • RubyRed, you probably didn't look at the developer's plans and elevations, the north wall facing the tracks is solid block, no windows except for a single column, which is probably a stairwell.

A double block wall will suppress nearly all the train noise.

New Restaurant?

I just walked by the Town Hall apartments on Halsted and Addison and noticed what appears to be a new restaurant getting ready to open up in one of the retail spots for that building. Does anyone know if this is actually a new restaurant and if so what the scoop on it is, or is it perhaps some facility that is there for the tenants of the building? It seems to look like to me it may be a restaurant because it also has bar seating and the decor of the place as well.

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Hi! That facility is part of the Center on Halsted's new Senior Center complex. That space will be used to serve senior lunches or for other senior events. The lunch program is administered as part of the City of Chicago's Golden Diner senior lunch program. The old police station itself will soon be open as part of the Senior Center, it's going to be very nice!

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Addenda: the Senior Lunch program at Town Hall is not just for building residents, it is for all neighborhood seniors 60 and up. There is another Senior Lunch served at the Presbyterian church down the street, at Addison and Broadway.

Stolen vehicle

I watched a flat bed truck race up my alley (3900 block between Hoyne and Hamilton) with a black Jeep looking vehicle hanging off the back at 3:20 am,Monday Jan 23, 2012. When I ran to the alley and put a bright flashlight on the truck, the driver made a very wide turn westbound onto Hamilton knocking over several dumpsters in the process.

I called 911 and gave a description of what I saw, when I turned the scanner on, I heard the call go out across the 19th district, but didn't hear another thing about it.

If this was you vehicle stolen, contact me via EB and I will get back to you.

  • Anyone heard where they are dropping them recently? Mine was stolen a week ago from River West, have been searching craigslist and just drove up and down Wolcott along with Diversey and Damen.

    Kevin

  • My 2011 Ford Fiesta was stolen from the 3900 block of Oakley last night or early this morning. What's funny is this is the second time this happened to me on this street, last time was a black 2002 Jeep Liberty back in 2006, and it happened on a Sunday-Monday as well.

  • Any news agencies such as yours conducting their own?

  • Noel Montenegro Photojournalist for NBC News

I cant speak for the other stations. I dont think we are. We dont have access to the legal tools to find out what people are really concerned about. Mainly if the owner of the building is the owner and installer of the recording equipment. And if the owner of the building has anymore recording equipment in use in any illegal way. That would require warrants for search. Police have to do their due diligence and burn some good old fashion shoe leather.

Change Coming to 44th Ward?

...maybe, maybe not, it will be for the voters to decide. But for the first time in several election cycles there are challengers to the incumbent in next month's election for 44th Ward Alderman. Come learn about the candidates and ask questions next week:

1. Monday, January 19 at 7pm at the next Southport Neighbors Association meeting. It will be at the Mercury Theater.
http://www.southportneighbors.com/meeting.html

2. Wednesday, January 21 at 6pm at the Hawthorne Neighbors Meeting. It will be at the Annoyance Theater
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hawthorne-Neighbors/589776931051310

Here's a chance to find out where the candidates stand on issues important to the community and ask questions.

  • Robert Rohdenburg Affordable Housing Activist for ONE Northside

A Google search of news stories on "Tunney" and "election" or "re-election" found no stories which mentioned him contemplating, thinking about, considering, or deciding on not running for re-election. Even if he though about it, I doubt that he would say it to a reporter. After Mayor Daley decided non-to run for re-election, their was story mention about a possible Tunney bid for election as Mayor of Chicago. If he had decided to run for mayor, he could campaign while still being 44th Ward Alderman.

  • Robert Rohdenburg Affordable Housing Activist for ONE Northside

There is a possibility that the "The Alderman was not invited to the forum" was a cover story for being busy doing something else that his chief of staff did not want to specify, but the appropriate and acceptable answer then would have been "The Alderman had a prior commitment that he couldn't break or change."

Please, please, please don't race through them- or fail to stop completely. Getting where you need to go on time should never trump a child's well being.
Thank you.

To give some background, snowblowing in this block typically occurs between the hours of 12am and 4am, so no, not even remotely a "normal" time to use a very loud machine. My guess is that it's a service used and they come at whatever time they feel like, then plow the entire dang block at these odd hours. It's not even the sidewalk, it's the garage areas behind the houses, so it usually takes a while. I'm a heavy sleeper, and it continually wakes me up and keeps me up because it goes on for an hour or more. Last night at 4:15am, I finally had it and called 311 and was transferred to 911. They sent a car out. I feel bad "wasting" our 19th district resources for something so trivial, but this is ridiculous! I'd like to believe that no normal person says "yes, 3am is an awesome time fire this puppy up to clean an inch of snow that my car is going to drive over!" Has anyone had similar experiences? Aside from wearing earplugs and filing noise complaints, any suggestions on how to handle?

The whole purpose of EB is to chew things over as neighbors, its our "back fence" - "did you hear this?" "Did you see that?" "What do you think about this?" not beat each other or up attack each other just for bringing a subject up. Why the hostility?

My guess is that CHPO25 is the one running the snow blowers! : )

But, now that I've read your comment, I'm guessing they passed on the plan because they couldn't get a liquor license due to the church proximity. Kind of shame.
Perhaps they could get a BYOB license instead.

To Ivan's point, I inquired on some of Lake View's facebook community forums whatever happened with a Guardian Angels proposal to set up an office in ELV near Belmont and Clark and I was brushed off with responses that having the Guardian Angels out on the streets and the Belmont stop would send the wrong kind of message. Apparently people getting mugged in broad daylight or on a busy daylight doesn't. I'm absolutely not saying the GAs are the end-all-be-all to crime problems, but I will say that gentrification left Lake View with a lot of residents with few street smarts, too preoccupied with superficial issues, and a general inability to understand causation vs correlation as it pertains to street safety. OTOH, the schools are certainly a lot better.

  • It's been my experience that crime seems to be something that's too easily brushed off or ignored...I hope we can get the awareness and attention on this matter on everyone's radar b/c all too often, inattention leads to inaction. I recently had an experience with my building related to this problem, (which I posted on a separate thread so this one doesn't get hijacked). Anyway, thanks for the comments.

Catalytic Converter theft - Roscoe Village

Hi neighbors, just a heads up that my husband had his catalytic converter stolen some time this week from the corner of School and Oakley. He drives a car that tends to be targeted for this type of theft - hopefully no one else had the same thing happen :(

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

I live on Roscoe and Ravenswood. The thieves stole my converter from my Honda Element three times in 11 weeks. They will come back for yours after you get it fixed as they know where you park now.

I invested in a cat clamp (catclamp.com) and a Viper Alarm system....

I invested in a cat clamp (catclamp.com) and a Viper Alarm system. I ordered the cat clamp and had it installed at Reliable Auto Repair on Roscoe and Ashland. You can also put an after market converter on your car. The good peeps at Mufflers for less on Roscoe and Damen recommended this the first time but did I listen.... nope. I just HAD to have the original Honda part. The after market converters do not have the precious metals that thieves desire.

I also should have gotten the cat clamp and the Viper. The cat clamp can be cut off if the thieves have enough time I did not learn about this until after they tried to cut the clamp off my friends' Honda Element. So I went to Armando Sounds and got the Viper vibration alarm. The system I have has 4 sensors. It is enough to thwart the the thieves. You could get more sensors but you will piss your neighbors off as a squirrel or a passing truck will set it off. I settled on the Viper because it also has remote start, its so nice to get into a warm car in winter. You can also spend a little more and get the one that links to your smart phone. The peeps there are awesome.

The thieves did try to get my converter again a few weeks ago. The alarm on my key chain woke me up at 4am. I went outside in time to see the guy jump into a running car and drive away. ( I wish I had a crossbow)

So its been more then 2 years of street parking and so far so good. As a victim who was hit three times I just wanted to share my experience. So you have three options to consider. The two I went with cost me about $800.

I hope this helps. Sorry it happened to you.

  • The mostly target the cars that sit higher off the ground as they are easier to get under. Why struggle with a low slung car when there is probably easier pickings somewhere else on the block.

The problem is that the city should go after the salvage yards where the thieves turn these in for cash. I mean really, someone just happens to show up with a bunch of used catalytic converters?

Man & Woman Soliciting Every Door

We had a man and woman buzzing every door in our building Monday night in East Lake View, Belmont Harbor area. Luckily no one was dumb enough to buzz them in. Anyone else run into them? Awfully cold night for soliciting after dark by any of the regulars, like cable, cell and satellite promoters.

  • ChristineLVB Lakeview resident since 1994.

    Make that 12-29-14.

  • Same thing with our building, buzzed everyone. Said they were raising $$ to help with city kids going to college who could not pay. They were using badges/name tags with the Chicago Tribune Logo on it.

Annoying Helicopter Buzzing the Neighborhood

Anyone notice increased helicopter traffic over the past couple of months, especially on the weekends? I am used to the normal activity (police, news, Obama visits) but this is super frequent and is flying pretty low to and from downtown. I did a quick Google search and I think it's a red helicopter operated by a tour company that includes Wrigley but not sure which specific company. If anyone knows which one it is, let me know and I will contact them and the Alderman's office.

  • There are far more worthy things to cry about than what others cry about.

  • Irving Bark Fined and ticketed to death

WGN studios is off Addison and Rockwell, their helicopter flies all over the city for stories.

    Get used to it.

Tree removal on Roscoe

Anyone know why all the trees were cut down on Roscoe, the majority between Leavitt and Hamilton on the north side of the street? Sad to see them all go...

  • Andrea, replacement trees have been planted, (and babied, at least ours!). But even though they let you sort of choose - I think I remember them giving us a choice of three varieties - there's no guarantee you'll get what you ask for (we didn't).

I think the city could do a bit more outreach about the matter - making sure home and business owners know the care that is required, and that if they don't do it, it won't get done. Just hanging a flier on a door doesn't really do the trick. And some people think if the tree is planted by the city, the city will do follow-up care (and watering???). Or if it's an absentee landlord situation, there's no specific go-to person to provide the care and it comes down to whether a resident (like you!) takes it on.

Anyway, if you're reading this thread, please take care of your trees! And try to get the city people not to give them those high and tight haircuts, and don't cover their root crowns! Yay, trees.

The 2100 block of roscoe was treated for ash borer a few years ago as noted in the attached article. The treatment lasts about three years. Must have failed to protect that stand.

Lincoln and Roscoe Intersection Businesses

Does anyone know what is going on with the southeast corner of this intersection? The bead store that was on that corner across from Starbucks has been gone for years now and the few properties going south from there are all vacant now as well. Just seems like this is too nice/affluent of an area for vacant properties for this long. A few lots farther south on Lincoln I see they are building something though... anyone have insight or knowledge...

Just seems like this is too nice/affluent of an area for vacant properties for this long. A few lots farther south on Lincoln I see they are building something though... anyone have insight or knowledge of what we can expect there? Also the vacant lot kiddie corner from there next to the Paulina Brown line stop? I heard there might be a Walgreen's going there over a year ago but it is still just vacant land... just curious!

  • L

The SE corner is getting a development that includes a hamburger joint. There are other posts here about it if you search. The corner next to the L was supposed to get an apartment building, but nothing has been announced about that for a while.

  • Mixed use retail on the SE corner. RKF is the broker. You can Google news about it.

  • Thanks to posters above - I've been wondering the same thing recently, it's very noticeable now with all those vacant storefronts in what I would think is a pretty great location (affluent area, proximity to the El, plenty of foot traffic.) Plus that maternity store on the NE corner is also closing.

I did some googling and found the following:
    http://www.rkf.com/rkf-arranges-2985-sf-lease-for-bareburger%E2%80%99s-first-chicagoland-restaurant/

Looking forward to the new look to that corner next summer!
