Say no to Cubs parking at Irving and Rockwell

In the latest newsletter for our ward, it was announced that the Cubs will be soon turning our neighborhood into their parking lot. This doesn't require ward approval. Sounds like a deal has been made between the Cubs and Basic wire, a factory with a gigantic lot by the river.
I can only imagine what wonders this will do for traffic on Irving, Western and all the side streets. I'm not just talking car traffic, some of the fans aren't...

I can only imagine what wonders this will do for traffic on Irving, Western and all the side streets. I'm not just talking car traffic, some of the fans aren't all too respectful. Ready to have your area turn into Wrigleyville? Finally, what positive does our community get from this? What traffic studies were done? I know this is a free market but let's make sure we let Basic Cable and Cubs ownership hear are voices.

Please report problems about new Cubs lot

The new Cubs parking lot at Rockwell and Irving is sure to cause issues for neighbors. Please be sure to contact the Cubs 773-404-4175 or Alderman Pawar (773) 868-4747 or
info@chicago47.org with all concerns. This was thrust upon the neighborhood without input from the residents in a surprise move. The meeting with the Cubs, alderman and residents was 4 days before the first weekend game and there are still open questions and concerns.

New Development Ashland/School

Does anyone know what's coming up at the northeast corner of Ashland & School? It's been an empty bank for the three years we've lived here, and I'm curious what's coming to the neighborhood.

New Tags - Belmont & Damen

I noticed this weekend someone tagged buildings, fences and trucks at the intersection of Belmont and Damen. I counted six different locations. The graffiti is HUGE and unsightly. One tag in particular had a date of 4/5/14. The most alarming bit: a couple of the tags look like swastikas. Who do we call to have them removed?

Cameras at Ashland/Addison intersection?

Driving the other day I saw smalish white cameras mounted atop the traffic lights at the Ashland/Addison intersection. These are not the big red light cameras or the speed cameras as far as I can tell. Well they might be speed cameras, but they look different than ones that are currently in place.

Just wondering if anyone knows about the cameras and what they are for?

As Im ok with the Potbelly's, I think it might damper the Sub place at Addison/Western sales, but maybe force them to take credit cards finally!

Im all for Starbucks, the area is underserved in coffee, as I mentioned elsewhere, a local coffeeshop needs to in on Roscoe or Addison somewhere but Western is more grab and go than sit and chill and chat. Just my two cents.

Ikea looking for new urban store in Lakeview

My friend, who's in commercial real estate, told me that Ikea is looking to acquire a large space in Lakeview for a store. They wanted the Century Centre shopping mall location on Clark/Diversey but couldn't make it work.
He said it will need to be about half the size of a typical Ikea store, roughly 150,000 square feet. It's expected to be about 7 stories tall.
Anyone got any suggestions for the location? They're looking at tearing down existing buildings or at least keeping some of the exterior elements if it has historical context or a beautiful ornate facade.

I am looking for events on the North Side of Chicago and maybe Evanston, Skokie, etc.

Thanks!

Fencing in the Park!!!

On my walk this morning just south (3700N) of the Marovitz Golf Course ,along the Lake front, it appears the Park District is constructing a fence!! It appears it will be about 7 feet tall!! Has anyone heard who &/or why this is happening?? I think that it's an ugly eyesore.. Our Lake front is meant to be Open..

Oh no :( that sounds horrible.

  • Corey Warner 25 year englewood resident Politicsmylife chi-styl

How do you think the people on the southside feel..

  • Jen K 22-year Lakeview resident

They've erected fencing as they've rebuilt each section of the lakefront. Could it be connected to that project? (I'm not sure how far north they've gotten with their work.)

The city code says construction is allowed at any time if it is sanctioned by the city or part of a public works project. So if that is the case, calling 911 will not help because it would not be illegal. That was an issue I dealt with when they were doing the Irving Park streetscape. I'm not sure if this particular project fits in that category, but my point in my original post was that even if it is legal, with the Alderman's help, you might still be able to get them to start later.

Construction on Surf and Sheridan

Does anyone know what can be done or who to contact about the horrific vibrations coming from this construction? I am a stay at home mother and don't feel safe at home while our walls and ceiling are violently vibrating. Already one painting came crashing down the stairs as a result. Luckily THAT day we were not home. I realize they can't halt construction but perhaps some warning or time table of when the very aggressive work is being done could be provided?

  • I hope they are over soon. I got home early from work and my entire place was shaking. I got flashbacks to my time in a city that got a lot of minor earthquakes. I can't wait for this to be done. Just 1.5 more years, eh?

  • Ditto! The shaking and rumbling are incredible. I'm just worried it's causing some unseen stress on our building that will only show up later when it's too late to do anything.

I'm not a big fan of advertising in general, but when it's distributed to my doorstep day after day until the streets and sidewalks are littered with unwanted trash (menus, brochures, etc) I get annoyed. The North Center Chamber of Commerce publishes a magazine for all local business needs to advertise. There is also the Redeye, local newspapers and bus station bill boards for this purpose. Why do we need to allow creepy strangers to canvass our streets while we're at work and litter our fences, doorknobs and sidewalks with junkmail we don't want? Why can't we "opt out" or better yet allow those that do want this junk to "opt in"? Maybe the Alderman could post a printable, official sign on their website that residents could post to ward off this junk delivery. How about a fine for those businesses that ignore the request?

Am I the only one that is annoyed by unwanted solicitation?

  • FWIW / sadly, the USPS does not consider door slots as mailboxes, so these bothersome solicitors are not breaking any federal law or postal regulation by polluting our homes (buildings) with printed materials.

  • BTW I hope you don't mind a 40th ward resident jumping in on this topic!!! My "No Soliciting" sign that's been in my gate for almost a year has been of little effect. I wonder if a "No Trespassing" sign would be more effective, or at least more binding?

It *is* going somewhere, and there *are* plans. Most likely not this year, that is true. But even at the first presentation, the time frame was "2013-2014".

Also, I would bet you a dollar that, once demo starts, it will be to the point of resurfacing the main route of Western within 45 days--not "finished", bc there will be lots of other reconstruction of the intersections, etc, too, but re-opened that quickly--so if the funding comes in 2015 (likely, I think) the viaduct will be gone in 2015, too.

And nothing is likely to happen with the empty lot (which was the initial question) until the viaduct comes down.

Parking

Hi neighbors!
We will be moving to the area (Belmont and Racine) next month. Out place has a one car garage but we have 2 cars. Does anyone know where we might be able to rent a spot for not too much $$?
Thanks!

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I'm thinking L meant west of Lakewood is not zoned. I'm on the 1200 block of Fletcher, which is zoned. Welcome to the neighborhood! I second and third the people that say parking is rough during Cubs season.

  • Katherine Pastor, Irving Park United Methodist Church

My daughter lives in an area where parking is tough and she and her husband ALWAYS drove around their block and would snag a spot if there were one open -- then the other person would park in their designated spot. Smart strategy by a couple without any extra money to spend for parking! Welcome to the area!

Unfortunately I can't open that link. I'll try again later but I'm wondering if this is the same as the invasive tree removal project that caused such a hub bub last year?

  • Bex Runner, dog owner, food lover in the 60618

Yep, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be removing a lot, although it's not just invasive species renewal. According to the plan, the project is four-fold: 1) restoring stream hydraulics and morphology 2) restoring riparian zone habitat and vegetation 3) restoring oak savanna habitat 4) prevention and/or removal of invasive species.

Coyote Spotted at Wilson & Ravenswood

Saw this big coyote late Friday evening. He was walking around right by the METRA tracks, then walked across Wilson avenue like he didn't even care....

  • I'd take a coyote over a rat popping out of my dumpster when I take out the trash. And yes that's happened. Scared me to death

  • John P Manufacturer Ravenswood

the treehugger article is misinformation at best. Yes, there was a study done outside the city that tagged coyotes some time ago, some of those animals may have found there way into the city along with all the other coyotes that manage to get here without any help. The city did not release any coyotes, but they are not doing anything about the ones that are here because they eat rats

Comcast eMail

Anyone having a problem 'sending' eMails thru Comcast?

  • Rachel D. just hungry

Is that the only issue you've had? My Comcast Internet has been finicky for the past couple hours, but it's okay at this very moment...

  • Everything else is good. Receiving emails but can't send thru Outlook. Can send thru Comcast website. I think that Outlook is having an issue connecting to the server. I have Comcast checking on it.

  • Victoria Artist and Muscian

  • Walking by yesterday and introduced myself to the new owner (Tim?). Very nice and personable. Target opening early June.

  • EEH

I go to Rocks Lincoln Park fairly regularly to play trivia. The food is great and the staff is really nice. The owner, Tim, is a friend of a friend and a real stand-up guy. Prices seem to be in line with other nearby bars.

Illinois Concealed Carry Coming To Chicago

Another poster has a discussion about concealed carry classes and I was surprised on some of the nasty responses. The new law is in place and people will be carrying weapons legally soon (if not already) in our Neighborhood. I for one think it's a good thing.

@DonnyKerabotsos: What do our views have to do with anything? Why would I discuss my views with your friends and relatives? Why would that subject even come up? Why would my opinion even come up? I extended a hand of friendship to colleagues, for nothing other than friendship. Our opinions should mean absolutely nothing to anyone. It was just a discussion.

Comcast Outage

Anybody else experiencing phone/internet outages with Comcast today?

  • leon999 Morbidly obtuse.

My Comcast internet went out last night around midnight too and lasted until about 7 AM.

This has happened several times in recent weeks (we live around Armitage & Western) -- always overnight -- and that pattern makes me wonder if it is maintenance related.

Each time I've re-started the modem (it's a good one) to no avail.

Possible sign?

A few weeks ago we had a guy who says he was with comEd, who was not marked in anyway, buzz our condo building door to no avail. A few days later I noticed a baby blanket on the fence. I took it off. A few days later I noticed a blanket placed on the same spot on the fence, I removed it again. Today I noticed a balloon tied to our fence and I cut it loose. Is this odd? Is there anywhere I can report this type of activity? Is this a tagging of sorts? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Someone put a rug over our fence once. I didn't think anything of it, but thought it was odd. Now I will keep an eye out for things like this. Thanks for your post.

  • jz

Thank you, pr, for noticing something and getting help. Neighborhoods are safer when people look out for each other. I have no time for the sarcasm and put-downs.

  • One of my favorite places in Lakeview. I didn't go as often as I would like because the seating area was so small. I'm sure I'll be visiting more often now :]

Construction on Henderson & Ashland results in unannounced towing

The old bank on Ashland across from Whole Foods is finally being demoed. The company put a fence around the property last week, but on Henderson St, they didn't post any signage about upcoming construction, so this morning, a row of cars was ticketed and towed.

Nice job City!

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

That's a nice legal battle...hope somebody took pictures!
