Methadone clinic!

Yesterday, there are flyers going around in the neighborhood concerning a new methadone clinic being opened on Belmont Ave. and Oakley .I called the 32nd Ward office and confirmed this. This is not a rumor but a fact. I don't understand this type of business being allowed before asking the residents first. Not saying that people don't deserved to be helped but maybe in a medical district might be an appropriate setting. Also I understand that the State is responsible for allowing this zoning regulation to happen. This makes me very nervous , be aware.

Ribfest featured on Food network tonight

Saw a promo for a Food Network show that features Ribfest. It's on Tonight (monday, aug 25th) at 9:30, "Eating America with Anthony Anderson". I assume it's our Ribfest since I could see my building in the background.
I also saw on DNAinfo that Bartoli's will be featured on the Cooking channel's, "Bite This with Nadia G." tonight at 8:30.
North Center representing!

  • To me, asking where you grew up (ie. in the past), I think it's fine to generalize. Or if she said "here", that means anywhere in Chicagoland to me. It threw me because the woman was almost rude about it. No need for that. You're right though...New Yorkers are pretty snooty about the B&T crowd.

  • I had a friend who used to tell everyone he was from the south side of Chicago, and by south side he meant Hammond, Indiana. C'mon.

XIPPO (Bar @ Damen/Grace) - Noise Out of Control!

These Xippo patrons are out of control. I can hear them coming a block away, then they congregate....And get louder and louder. I've called the police but of course they're gone by the time/if they show. Plan on letting the alderman know about it.

  • Thanks for the heads up, Kevin. I never even noticed the sign changed back to Xippo until you posted (I live across the street from the bar). They 'appear' to have closed up shop for the past year with the exception of the occasional paint and wine party. It's been blessedly quiet ever since and it's been a joy. I hope this isn't a sign that their loud, obnoxious Eurotrash dance parties will resume and once again destroy our neighborhood's peace and quiet.

  • Wow I didn't know EB brought back the old posts too.
Still a few drunks passing through, but it's much better now that Xippo is gone.

Hawthorne School - Field

Does anyone know if there are groups or organizations that are allowed to reserve the entire field next to the school? We were there playing with our children a few weekends ago when a huge group of people playing soccer completely overtook the entire field and essentially pushed us out.

  • Alex D Resident since 2009

There are city leagues that have the field reserved for games on some nights. Also youth leagues during the day on some weekends.

  • Frank T. Teacher in Lakeview

I coach for a school, and we have permits on us at all times in case there's a conflict.

Nah, not without there actually being a permit posted. But from the commencement of underground work, to completion? You really think that can't be done in 5 months?

Of course, the whole situation reinforces the view that it's impossible for a business to get things done in Chicago--if a large-ish, local, business like Malanti's can't get things to happen, then who can?

But then, it's also possible that they like to do a single project at a time, and while the Oak Park Malnati's opened basically on time, the West Loop one (where Ina's was) appears to be a bit behind schedule. So that might be the main delay.

In any case, barring acts of god, or too many plane shadows cracking the slab, there's no reason that they can't go from actively starting underground utility work to open in 150 days.

  • I hope I lose my bet.

  • Carol Senal Resident of 3600 N Lake Shore Drive

There are so many accidents at this juncture in both directions that they have to replace the guard rail constantly.

Carol is so right. I look down on that spot, and we've seen probably a dozen vehicles break thru that barriers, and many more smash into it. Something about the slight curve and downgrade from the overpass? It seemed to lighted after the repaving, but we still don't use that bus stop or crosswalk to the underpass.

McPherson School Campus Project

Construction on the McPherson School campus and playground will begin next week on the west side of the school. The west campus will include new walkways, landscaping, play spaces, play structures, and will be designed to improve storm water management on the campus. The east campus will include new walkways, landscaping, outdoor classroom space, a small performance space, a Little Lending Library and a variety of seating areas. The work on both sides of the school will begin in August and be completed around the end of September. If you have questions about the project or want to learn more about the school, please email kim@friendsofmcpherson.com.

  • robin in WRP Tired and Cranky

Hi Kim - this is great to hear! Was the funding from CPS or a 501c?

  • Thanks for your question. The project is funded through a combination of state, local TIF, Aldermanic menu funds and donations from private donors. No CPS funds are being used for this project.

  • There is also a video about the project posted on the Friends of McPherson website. Phase I, which includes the playground and play spaces on the west side and the east campus landscaping redesign, will be finished this year. We are working to secure the necessary resources to complete Phase II, which includes the turf field and new parking configuration on campus, in 2015.

WARNING to pet owners/walkers/lovers: House on north side of 1900 W. Larchmont Ave block puts moth balls in their parkway. Not sure why, but not only smells horrible, but can be lethal to our pets/kids if ingested. Is this allowed on public property? This is where we take our dogs on walks.

Poisonous to: Cats, Dogs

Level of toxicity: Generally moderate to severe, life-threatening

Common signs to watch for:

•Vomiting
•Diarrhea
•Inappetance
•Lethargy
•Walking drunk
•Abnormal fluid accumulation within the body
•Excessive thirst or urination
•Potential injury to the kidneys
•Tremors
•Seizures
•Coma
•Death

Mothballs are pesticides that slowly release a gas vapor to kill and repel moths (and their larvae) and other insects. Mothballs are also used to repel snakes, mice, and other animals, though this use is not recommended and can be harmful to pets, children, and the environment. The chemicals in mothballs can be inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or absorbed through the stomach and intestines. Cats are more sensitive to the toxic effects of mothballs, but dogs are more likely to ingest mothballs. Clinical signs of mothball poisoning include vomiting, mothball-scented breath, pale or brown gums, weakness or lethargy, difficulty breathing, tremors, seizures, and organ failure (e.g., liver, kidneys).

If you suspect your dog or cat ingested mothballs, contact your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline immediately for life-saving treatment advice.

They must have left some food behind because the Southport storefront is now littered with dead flies...such an eyesore, creeps me out each time I walk past it on my commute. Shocked that the chain closed, they must have overexpanded--this location had a line of customers every evening.

  • Personally, I never understood the business model. I bought pizzas from them twice and stopped after I realized I could get a pizza made, and delivered to me for the same price as this place. Did I mention that the delivered pizza was already made? I didn't have to cook it myself.

I found them to be overpriced for what they were offering.

My family is relocating and I would like to help my nanny find a new family. Tania was with us for two years watching my two young children. She is looking for part time or full time hours in the Lakeview or Lincoln Park areas but is open to other areas as well. Tania never once turned us down for "date night" extra hours which is a huge plus!
Please contact me if you are looking for someone starting in September.
Thanks!

  • Hi! I'm interested in talking with you about your nanny. Could you please send me an email? Kathryn.borio@gmail.com.
    Thanks!!

  • We are in Southport corridor and will need a full time nanny/ nanny share starting mid September. Can you send me an email with some additional information?

Pallet?

Anyone know where I might be able to find a pallet in good condition for a DIY project?

  • thanks all! i found one leaning up besides a dumpster on roscoe :)

just a DIY project to hold garden tools in my garage - pesticides might actually be a benefit! Haha, thanks again!

BTW I've seen them in the alley behind Sherwin Williams at aldine/halsted, now and then.. They get paint on them, they may send them back but they may be for the taking if they're in the alley, might ask.
