Southport/Grace Store Closing

I was strolling on Southport (Southport and Grace) and noticed signs posted on the window of A Little Bit of This-Unique Monogram Boutique. I found out they are sadly closing within two weeks. They have some major price reductions and it appears they are trying to get rid of their inventory before they close for good.

  • I'm sad to hear this. I remember when krista opened her original store on Lincoln - probably over 10 years ago. I did a lot of business there at the time and have been happy to see her success over the years.
She is a talented, kind and attentive person. I wish her the very best.

  • I live right around the corner from the store and hope to see another unique, family owned shop open up in its place. Wishing Krista a speedy recovery and sending good thoughts to her family!

Wrigley Noise

Is the noise coming from Wrigley field even louder tonight? Am I going crazy? I've lived on the Southport corridor for three years (Southport and Belmont) and I've never been able to hear the games until now. I'm trying to gauge what to expect...

  • Guys...they are working on the rehab...it's going to take them some time to dial everything in. I don't think it's like they just tell a guy named Ed to turn the volume down from 10 to 6....I would imagine there's some work to be done calibrating everything to get the volume and direction of speakers just right.

If there is no alderman response, I suggest going straight to the mayor. Not that this will expedite results, but at some point the mayor would get on the alderman to take action so their constituents stop bothering him.

Was your Stolen from Belmont and Racine?

The Police should have it. It was silver with a basket and locked to the sign post by 7-11.

I saw a guy using a buzz saw in broad daylight....sparks flying and all...to cut the lock off today around 3 so I called the Police. Perp hopped on the Belmont bus with your bike. An officer stopped the bus though. Last I saw was the perp and your bike on and Southport.

Well when a person, like myself is robbed 4 times, you tend to be ultra sensitive to your surroundings. Catalytic converter stolen 3 times and some expensive power tools from My husbands car. Took us a month to make enough money to replace half of what my husband loss. I lost days of work since I needed my car for my job and it's not like we have an extra $300 to rent a car.

So I will call the Police any time I want. I hate thieves with all my heart. And just so we are clear, I am brown skinned and I have never had problem with the Police. And yes, I have had the cops called on me cause of my skin color. I walk dogs so sometimes I am in wealthy areas. It pissed me off on the inside but it not the fault of the Police that some one considered me suspicious. Still, never had a problem with Police. I show them respect and they show me respect.

Window Cleaner

Does anyone know of a reliable company to wash condo building windows? We have a 6 unit building with 8-12 windows per unit. We are having a hard time finding someone that will show up for an estimate. We have got a couple quotes through email and they are all over the board from $300 to $1200 for the job. We had a company scheduled for the work, said they could do a 3 story building (even sent them photos) then when the day came to do the work they claim they don't have a ladder for that high! Any help would greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have never felt any side effects from cub games in Lakeview or Lincoln Park, only in Wrigleyville, and I've lived in all those neighborhoods. I think its fair to assume your going to get it in WV and never complained, but its unacceptable to feel it as far as LV or LP.

Tornado Sirens?

A friend of mine, who lives in Rogers Park, heard tornado sirens last night/early this morning. She says there was also a warning listed on the weather app on her phone. I'm in Roscoe Village, was awake at the time, and heard nothing. Also didn't get an EWS message on my phone. There's no warning listed on the National Weather service website, but she insists she heard the sirens. Did anyone hear them around here? If there really was a warning, it's more than a little scary that I heard nothing.

  • Ann in Lakeview 30+ years in Lakeview

I believe the National Weather Service testes sirens as part of a statewide drill.

  • robin in WRP Feelin' Feisty

Ann - the city tests the Civil Defense sirens the first Tuesday of every month at 10 am

  • Yeah, this wasn't a test - it was the middle of the night. I guess I'm not the only one who didn't hear them, then.

I remember one Halloween when we had "spook house" in our front yard, the security guy stopped & used his spot light to see what was going on during his rounds. If it was prowlers, up to no good, I'm sure he would have called it in....and of course the spot light would have chased the bad guys away.

Rooftop deck

I just bought a condo and have private rooftop rights. However, there is only one stairwell, so I'm assuming I will be unable to build a rooftop deck according to city ordinance. I've seen other EB posts about this situation and wondered if anyone knew of any legal loopholes or other options for the rooftop besides building a deck. I do not want to build if I can't get the permit. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the helpful info! I've seen some people put artificial lawn and furniture on the rooftop instead of building a deck and wondered if that was because it was easier to do and didn't need to meet the same city requirements as a deck (no permit required, etc). Some actually look pretty good.

    Dave78,
In regards to the two exit issue, a number of factors in the building code will determine if you need two exits: the size of the deck, the travel distance from the deck to an egress exit, and the occupant load of the deck. Size itself is not the only determinant for two exits. Also, be advised that the city requires a 100 pounds per square foot loading for the deck. Unless there has been a legal deck on it in the last 10 years or so, the structure capacity will need to be increased to meet code. Thus, the roof and sheathing will have to be ripped up, the joist will have to be replaced or additional ones added before re-roofing and then building the deck and possibly the second exit. This all can only happen if the zoning for you house allows a deck.

    d3,
For the risk involved in an illegal and non-permitted deck, lets say is that you build one without the structure being upgraded or a second exit (if required) being added. Maybe this will be fine, maybe you and your spouse are the only ones that will ever use it when you own it. However, you get tired of the cold winters and move, thus selling your house, and you keep the deck on for selling features. A young vibrant couple buys the house in spring, they move in on the first 70+ degree day and throw a party. Friends tell friends, and the deck is packed full, the structure that was designed for a 20 pounds per square foot yields, collapses, and kills 13, severely injuries 10, and the rest have minor injuries.

Who do you think is liable for putting an illegal deck on that roof? If you have ever sold a home, you have more than likely signed something saying that you got all required permits for the work on the house you are selling.

Please, we all need to be responsible for safe homes.

    Cheers,
    Jon, Architect & Home Inspector

Eblock, I am an architect and willing to give you a proposal for the work. My first suggestion would be to first do a zoning and building permit analysis to see if you can 1) get zoning approval without a variance. Currently zoning is severely backed up from medical marijuana applications; this is not a joke. 2) If you actually need two exits or not. Most likely you will, but a few things effect this, such as: travel distance from the most remote point on the roof deck to a legal exit, the square footage of the deck, and the occupant count of the deck.

Please note that putting a deck on the roof, will almost certainly require work to the roof structure because unless there was a legal deck on the roof recently it does not meet the 100 pounds per square foot live load requirement in addition to the dead load of the new deck. What does this mean? The roofing and sheathing will have to ripped up, new joist added or the old ones replaced, then new sheathing and new roofing will have to be put back on. Then the deck can be placed on the roof. So as someone stated before, depending on all of these factors plus more like, permit fees, inspection fees, & type of materials the cost can have a wide range.

My firm is Hydrant Studio and I can be reached at 312.945.6208 or submit your information at www.hydrantstudio.com

I realized that I did not answered your initial question. The permit process will involve having an architect or possibly a structural engineer prepare all pertinent drawings for the project. Then either you or the architect can upload the digital drawings in the DWF format, the building permit application and other extraneous documents in PDF format. A zoning review fee of at least $75 is required during submission of the drawings.

If the project gets a pass from zoning, then the building department will review it for building code conformance. If the drawings are deemed suitable, the project will be granted a permit which will be available for download after the permit fee is paid in full. The fee varies on project type and size of project.

The GC or owner, whoever agrees, at the appropriate time schedules the inspections. The time it takes for an inspector to come out to the job site depends on the workload; I can not really predict this. When an inspection is passed, the project can continue.

    Cheers,
    Jon

I attend a lot of free movies there and it is not "the seat YOU choose" but "the seat you choose from the ones we give you for the size of your party." • Mr. Cullen established the theater and the restaurant. He had no health insurance when he had a costly stroke a few years ago. He's given immensely to theater as we know it in Chicago for decades. You can lose everything you build. This is a tragic story.

Does anyone know the status of the unfinished construction site at that location? There was supposed to have been a hearing at City Council in regard to it.

I've reviewed the published agendas of both the Zoning and the Housing committees from August 2014 through January 2015 and could find no mention of this address for a zoning change or any other city council or committee action. Because of the election, there will not be any city council meetings or committee meetings in February. There is a Housing committee hearing scheduled for 3/11 10am and two Zoning Committee Hearings next month: 3/12 and 3/17 , both staring at 10am in Council Chambers, before the 10am 3/18 City Council meeting. No agendas for these committee meetings are available yet. Shortly after 3/1 some of the agendas for the March meetings should start to appear. You can check the web site:
https://chicago.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx for any additional committee meeting dates, changes in times/locations, and the meeting agendas. The current or new alderman for the ward may know more about the property before any hearing action. The press coverage about the property are old stories at:
    May 21,2012 story:http://chicago.curbed.com/archives/2012/05/21/stalled-condo-building-to-serve-as-skeleton-for-luxury-rentals.php

  • I'm sorry to hear that nothing has transpired, but thanks very much for your thorough review-I appreciate it!

Summer Options for 6 year old child

I'm looking for daycare options for my 6 year old for this upcoming summer. I work from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. The Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club doesn't start until 8 am but I have to be at work by 8 am. I need to pick up as late as 6 pm on some days. Any suggestions/recommendations for high quality group childcare for a 6 year old in the area? Looking for entire summer, not just short summer camps. Thank you!

    JCYS is a great program!

  • mike Return Chicagoan circa 1996

Hamlin park offers day camps during the summer that I have sent my boys to. It's not too expensive and you need to sign up online. It is offered through the Chicago park district.

Missing campaign signs

Someone took the two campaign signs off our front lawn as well as our neighbors, very odd.

  • robin in WRP Feelin' Feisty

Not odd, just standard Chicago politics

  • Who were the signs for?

  • Before or after the polls closed? If it was after, please let me know who the signs were for, I'm voting for him/her next time. I'm sick of all the campaign trash that candidates leave all over the neighborhood, especially outside polling places and around the el stops, and never bother to police up.

Police ride-alongs?

I've heard that Chicago police officers and detectives will do ride-alongs for civilians but I cannot find any information on the City of Chicago police department website. Has anyone ever done this or know who to contact? Thank you!
