3452 W. Irving Park Ave. - Chicago Coffee House

This has had a sign for "Coming Soon" for quite a while now. Anyone have details on the place? Is the owner on Everyblock? I've been excited for a local, non Dunkin/McDonald's coffee shop in the area as I consider this area a coffee desert unless you go far west to Portage or South to Logan Square.

Looks like the building sold at the end of October 2013 but the coffee house has been "Coming Soon" for about 7 months.

Need reliable and affordable snow removal service recommendations please!

I'd greatly appreciate any referrals for snow removal service for an 8 unit condo building in Old Irving Park please! I know its early, perhaps, but just found out our former vendor closed shop :( Thanks for your time!

  • Jen, you should ask someone VERY close that already has someone come out. I think you know they charge per visit. We shovel ourselves but don't care about anything other than the mailman breaking his neck. It's a small house and driveway. The peddlers want $40 just to come out,...

We shovel ourselves but don't care about anything other than the mailman breaking his neck. It's a small house and driveway. The peddlers want $40 just to come out, regardless of snowfall then $10 an inch! I shooed him away and kept shoveling. The church on the corner of Irving & Kostner has someone come out and shovel their entire lot. It's a big lot but since they're already here it might be worth asking the church who they have?

3 gunshots heard near Irving and St Louis around 8pm last night

Did anyone else hear the 3 shots in this area? I ran out side to see if I could see anything but could not see anything out of the ordinary. I called the fuzz to report it.

  • Chris hey Andy, are you goofin' on Elvis?

Brian, my wife thought she heard them, but off in the distance, at that time last night. But we are north and west of that area. I didn't hear them.

There has been a flair up of SGD and FS taunting SCR's graffiti in that immediate area in the last week. Just over 3 years ago, SGD's shot and filled an SCR and wounded another. With FS involved in a shooting a few months later. I'm guessing the flair up in graffiti is marking that anniversary, which is now following by the gunshots.

Proposed Schurz athletic field discussed at community meeting hosted by Ald. Arena

Residents express concern about the impact of closing section of Waveland Avenue for the proposed project; alderman to form steering committee

2 weeks post-meeting with Alderman Arena, has anything happened other than the monthly OIPA meeting back on Oct 13th? Has the steering committe been formed? Is there any neighborhood group that has been formed to specifically object to the proposed project?

landscaper recommendation

We are gardeners ourselves and have fairly decent knowledge about what kinds of shrubs-trees-flowers work in our environment. We are looking for someone to built a layout or border for our front yard and part of back that we can fill in with what we like or already have growing. Also on a limited budget (of course.) Any tips or example of costs youve incurred? Thanks everyone!

Feral/Alley Cat Colony

Over the last few years our feral/alley cat population in the 3700 Block of Albany has gone sky high. It all started with a few houses that kept their non-spayed/neutered cats outside. I know of at least 20 cats that room the block.

The biggest issue is that they come into our yards and gardens and defecate everywhere and then we have to clean it up. I have an indoor cat, but outdoor cat feces can be harmful if touched.

And my neighbor can't get them out of his garage. He is now on his third momma kitty with a litter that has crawled through the side and camped out far under a utility bench. He feels bad of course and doesn't want to harm them so he just lives with is, but again cat poop everywhere.

It is hard to know if these are someone's pets or not. I heard that PAWS has a trap/spray and release program but what if these are really pets? I guess if they are and the owner let's them roam then it's fair game? I have noticed more alley cats on blocks on Troy and Whipple too. Anybody else having this issue?

  • Greg V. Cycling Dude

Sorry, that should be LOTS of stray cats.

  • My street, the 3400 block of Keating, has no other feral cats wandering around. There used to be one or two, but I haven't seen them in ages. The rat population has exploded. I have been here 22 years, and back then I used to see 1 rat a year,...

I have been here 22 years, and back then I used to see 1 rat a year, if that. Lately, we had them running through our yard every day. I was afraid to work in my garden, and I was so afraid they would get in my house and garage. Ugh! I have had my 4 feral cats for only a few weeks, and I have not seen one rat in that time. It is like a miracle.

Yoga in Avondale?

Does it exist?

  • I remember seeing the Chicago Park District at Independence was actually having yoga classes.

I also endorse the Yoga Shop and agree with BrightnShiny. Parking is pretty abundant around the studio, and typically not more than a block away. Often you can park right in front, but do read the signage carefully for restrictions.

Cute puppy!

Hello everyone,

Two days ago a van pulled up next to Chief O'Neills and left a super cute brown puppy. She appears to be around 4 months pit bull mix, well fed and happy. Is anyone missing a cute little puppy?

  • Chances are the dog was either stolen (or just from a litter no one wanted). If you or someone else is keeping the dog in your home, post her as Found on Lost Dogs IL's Facebook page. She looks adorable!!

  • Yes, try posting on lost dogs Illinois. Cicero and the SW side has recently had quite a few dogs stolen. I'm not saying it doesn't happen all over Chicago- but for some reason last week I saw quite a few more posting than usual. Also, you should probably head to any reputable vet and get the dog scanned for a chip.

  • any such name live, walk, & cook in logan square

CNC Machinist Openings?

Can anyone recommend any businesses or machine shops looking for CNC operators? My boyfriend is new to town with over 6 years experience at large corporations such as Caterpillar as a CNC machinist and looking for something new that hires in at over minimum wage and isn't past the airport. Any recommendations or experiences/tips any else has for looking for a position as such?

Did anyone hear an explosion/loud crash?

Near Kimball/Belmont area. Just heard crazy loud crashing noise.

  • Yes! It sounded like a bazooka. Around 9:00 pm last night. I heard an ambulance not long after. I have no idea what that was

  • I heard a loud boom around the time you mentioned. I assumed it was a firework.

  • My neighbors and I definitely agreed it was more than a firework... I called 311 but they didn't know anything about it. So weird!

Job boards or apps for the area?

I'm not sure if this is breaking any rules of Every Block but I was wondering if anyone knows of a good website to see jobs in just our area besides Craigslist? I'm open to anything so if anyone knows of any little places I might be missing as well in the Avondale and surrounding areas (I have clerical, retail and manager experience.) I would be forever grateful!

You can also go directly to any large company's websites, like Macy's, Target, Starbuck's, Whole Foods, etc. and check out their career pages. I mention some of those partly because it's the time of year when some of them are looking for seasonal positions which might, no guarantees, but might, turn into permanent ones after the holidays. Whole Foods will be opening several stores in the next few months.

Avoid simplyhired.com. They don't update their lists in a timely manner.

  • Koren Tracey Avondale Animal Lover. Avid Foodie.

Tom G, the things I am looking into are receptionist positions within an office setting or for a veterinary clinic or medical. (I am taking the medical route in school and have animal experience as well as clerical.) Anything with retail too, I do have manager experience. I have tried Indeed, I like that one the best. Monster, careerbuilder etc have all just given me headaches with emails for job openings that don't apply to me even after I have the settings changed. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

Rusty and Sediment Water

Over the past several years I have noticed that our water is rusty. If we don't use a toilet in our house for several days, it leaves rust marks and/or blackish sediment. I also noticed this at our office over in North Center. Over the weekends, it gets black sediment. Anyone else have this issue? At our house we replaced the water pipe from the street 14 years ago, so I would say that this is a city problem.

  • I think it was this past summer because a friend of mine moved here from Texas and I told him not to go into the water.
