Beware of Neighborhood Thief

This woman is stealing from backyards in the area. Be on the lookout!

  • @ Deputy Dog, You could hang your cell phone outside as a security system, but I think she will steal it - if someone else doesn't steal it first. I think that might be part of the problem, if you spend too much on the camera system, it becomes a theft target.

  • I live on Francisco and twice now when I have had the garage door open for a little bit I have had scrappers try to steal from my garage.

Missing Dark Brown/Black & White Cat

My cat, Louis, went missing 2 weeks ago. Male, approx. 6 years old.

He's very dark brown (almost black) with white underside and paws. He has a little white above his nose and subtle stripes on his side.

I'm offering a reward. Please call if you see him or have him. He is greatly missed.

  • Yes, I trapped him last night and he is home safe and sound.

Found a Dog in Avondale Last Night

The dog in the attached pic was found roaming around Monticello & School the night of Thursday, Aug. 14. No tags. If this is your dog, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the person who found the dog.

(Posting for a friend. Am withholding some details so that the owner will be able to prove it’s actually their dog. Dog is also being taken to vet to see if it has a chip implanted.)

  • Ev

I believe this was the same pup posted on facebook Lost Dogs Illinois and it states she is now home safe.

  • Ev, thanks for the update - good news the dog is back home.

3452 W. Irving Park Ave. - Chicago Coffee House

This has had a sign for "Coming Soon" for quite a while now. Anyone have details on the place? Is the owner on Everyblock? I've been excited for a local, non Dunkin/McDonald's coffee shop in the area as I consider this area a coffee desert unless you go far west to Portage or South to Logan Square.

Looks like the building sold at the end of October 2013 but the coffee house has been "Coming Soon" for about 7 months.

Nosey neighbors wasting city time and money

Hi I just wanted to vent about so called neighborhood watch calling 311 & 911 on people who have lived here longer than them. Then we were getting complaints that we are chopping up cars in our garage this is almost comedic. We willingly let the officers in the garage and they said " your neighbors don't like you , they keep calling us out here". Recently our cars and home were part of some vandalism that has been going on in the neighborhood and guess what? Nobody saw or heard a thing!!!We are sick of being harassed by these wanna be glencoe neighbors - stop bothering police and having them waste time and then when a real crime happens nobody wants to help us! We have lived here 22 years and own a $450000 home and are not leaving ! They police respect my husband who is also a police officer and these neighbors are starting to look like as*****s to our local beat officers. Focus on real crimes ,vandalism , rape , drug dealing.thanks for listening

I'm here from another neighborhood board. I just had a situation with a neighbor. A car blew through our intersection, AGAIN, and hit several parked cars while avoiding another car holding a family. There were tons of neighbors outside and after the police arrived I went back out to let them know the driver blew the stop sign. This woman who lives down the block told me I didn't have a life, how she is a homeowner who has lived here longer than me, how accidents happen and it won't matter if I try to do anything about it. She was just horrible. I found out right after that she was trying to protect herself since the person who blew the stop sign was her friend. She only lives a few houses from me and now I am afraid. I don't give a darn how long someone is a resident if they don't care about being respectful, and aren't concerned with the safety of their neighborhood.

If anyone knows him personally, could you suggest that he turn it down or park somewhere else? This is a VERY loud street, and his contribution is particularly rattling, it sounds almost like he's in the living room with us and everyone has to yell to be heard. I don't want to be pushy with the dang ice cream man. I know he's got to make a living. But it's three or four times a night with this guy, sometimes as late as 930. Another resident here has trouble putting his kids to bed because they flip out about ice cream at 9pm when they hear the music! Just wanted to see what has been on the neighborhood's mind about this.

  • Not sure it's the same guy...There's a truck that comes down West Shakespeare- same issue- very loud, sometimes very late. I simply spoke with him and said if he is stopped, he just can't have the music playing. He willingly complied and it's been much better.

  • Kristine Cloud 30 year resident of North Center

What, you don't like Turkey in the Straw? Just kidding - but I think I read on EB recently that if the van/truck is sitting still, there's an ordinance that says the music must be turned OFF. Good Luck!!

  • I DONT WAAAAANA BE COOKED, I DON'T WAAAANNA BE RAAAAAW, I JUST WANNA BE A TURKEY IN THE STRAW!!! Doot doo doo doo doo doo...

Solar Panels

We are considering installing solar panels to our home. While the initial investment is high (even with tax incentives) I am wondering if it makes sense if we only plan on being in our home 10 years. Has anyone given solar panels consideration for resale value of their home?

    Hi there
I have solar panels for hot water - put them up in 2007 with a grant from the state (about one third of the cost). They save me a substantial amount in hot water costs and also they provide some winter heating. Sometimes 20 - 30 % of the cost of gas, depending on winter sunshine.
I never did do an ROI - I just felt solar was the right thing to do.
I will say I have never found a realtor who knows anything about solar and who will add it to the property value. No appraisers either. It gets treated like any other selling point - hardwood floors and built in fireplace....cosmetic appeal. You are unlikely to get anything like the full value back at sale time.
While solar salesmen like to say it will add value to your property, in reality, after the fact, they will only tell you your house might sell faster than one without.
When valuations are done they use comparables in the neighborhood - if nobody else has solar, it is not a comparable item.
Domestic hot water systems are also not maintenance free. I recently had a pump go out, and the water tank needed cleaning. So add maintenance in, although the salesman will probably say they are maintenance free.
Look at the lifespan of the panels too.
Having said all that, I'm glad I did it, but I have learned a lot since then. Do your homework and you will be happy.
    Good luck !!

Updated info on Red Light Camera possible defense

A couple of people have emailed me about a post I made on EB a while ago about getting a red light camera ticket dismissed based on the fact the "MAKE" of the vehicle is listed as "OTHR" on the ticket, even though from the photo of the violation you can readily tell the "MAKE." The municipal code I cited in that old post seems to be different than where the rule is now, so I wanted to update the information.

Municipal Code 90-100-030 (b) (in part):
"The issuer of the notice shall specify on the notice his identification number, the particular parking or compliance ordinance allegedly violated, THE MAKE (my emphasis) and state registration number of the cited vehicle, and the place, date, time and nature of the alleged violation and shall certify the correctness of the specified information by signing his name as provided in Section 11-208.3 of the Illinois Vehicle Code, as amended."

Illinois Code 625 ILCS5/11208.3 (2) (in part):
"With regard to automated speed enforcement system or automated traffic law violations, VEHICLE MAKE (my emphasis) shall be specified on the automated speed enforcement system or automated traffic law violation notice if the make is available and readily discernible."

If you can discern the MAKE from the photo, you can try this defense. It worked for me, because in law, ALL of the "elements" (requirements) of an ordinance must be true to find the person guilty of the infraction.

When I went to the hearing, I printed out copies of the ordinance and state law, and made sure I had my vehicle registration with me, and that you could tell the MAKE by the photo. It worked and my ticket was dismissed. I have no idea what might happen if you mail this in. Maybe someone is willing to try it and see what happens.

BTW, I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, just a neighbor passing on some info.
Good luck!

No i didn't use the "make not on the notice" defense. I used other arguments. I have only had two red light tickets both for No Right Hand Turn on Red, and I don't remember whether or not the make was on the citation. However I have contested with the parking meter scandal (machine not working) and no permit for permit only street (long story), but when I get my rejection letter, I just figure it's some judge sitting up in there and with incentives to just stamp all the letters "guilty".

I will try your tactic though if ever I am to get a speeding red-light ticket and that condition exists. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Rachel A: Well, it's almost always a long shot these days. They need the money desperately, But always check the make and registration number on a ticket, because law says if the "MAKE" is not on a parking violation (as below), it is automatically dismissed.
From Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/11-208.3 (in part)
"With regard to municipalities or counties with a population of 1 million or more, it shall be grounds for dismissal of a parking violation if the state registration number or vehicle make specified is incorrect."

Chipotle???

I'm wondering which restaurant will open first...the Chipotle on Irving and Kilpatrick that has been being built forever or the Olive Garden on Addison and Central Park whose construction started just a few short months ago. Seems like a fair question since Olive Garden is about three times as large!

  • A&K

Slow Chicago permit process. From what I understand by talking to various contractors permits are easier to get but take much longer to be issued. In addition to inspections. Chipotle will open first but it's all based on final approval.

It has become much slower now that building is improving but also after out mayor made some cuts to the office. Hang tight, should be soon.

Parking Violator

Is there a way to report a vehicle that doesn't have a city and permit sticker. The individuals have lived there for almost a year and somehow have gotten away with just using temporary / vistor passes. If they live in the city they should follow the rules and biy a city sticker and permit parking like everybody else on my street. What can I do?

  • ANGIE RESIDENT OF BELMONT GARDENS FOR 38 YRS.

Maybe I am wrong but as I as I understand it, a sticker costs about $30.-$40 per year A guest sticker is about $8.00 for 15 days.. So lets do the math. About $192.00 per year for temp. It seems the yearly sticker people are coming out on top SO WHO CARES!!

However, when the street closure ends at 9pm, I expect to be able to put my car back on the street. Be respectful people.

I am not into block parties either. Every year i make myself scarce on that day. I usually get home at 10:15 and my street is still blocked. So i find a spot on another block. The music usually goes to midnight again i have the windows closed and air on. This year i found an empty beer bottle on my front lawn. So i am wondering do i complain to alderman or do i wait till next year and see if it gets worse or better and then complain? The block party signs posted say the street will be opened at 10 and that neighbors should respect everyone and clean up after themselves. I respect their right to have the party why don't i get the same respect?

  • I am not that jazzed about block parties. We have several around us, most are pretty respectful and sadly the good one this year got rained out just as their band started and they actually were pretty good. If block parties follow the rules-wrap up by 9 or 10PM hey no issue. The ones go on and on I do have issue with. Not everyone works M-F and some Sundays I have to start at 5AM or so in the morning. Just be respectful.

Did you lose a black pit bull? (Elston and Bernard)

HI, a black pit bull was on the loose, running back and forth across Elston this morning. S/he seemed friendly / harmless but was scaring the hell out of other dog owners. S/he's black with white chest wearing very chunky industrial-looking chain collar. Is this your dog? S/he may be with animal control. The police came and a nice guy on a bike who helped the other dog owners brought the dog to them.
