Hot Doug's

What will the people who wait 2 hours on a Saturday morning outside a hot dog stand do with their lives when it closes?

Seriously people... I don't want to be rude but... really?

  • I've waited in that line a few times. I've enjoyed myself. Most of the times I've been, it's been with visitors from out of state. Across the country, they've heard of Hot Doug's...and are eager to try it, despite the wait. It's a fun experience seeing his unique shop and it's unique menu...and meeting the friendly owner. I've never had to wait more than 1/2 hour...but I can see the line has grown now that people know it won't last forever.

  • Irving Bark Deb Step!

That is what I figured, that the people waiting were either new transplants to Chicago or visitors. I don't see people who grew up in Chicago like myself waiting more than 5 minutes for a dog,

I heard Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain had to wait too, Doug would not let them cut, that is pretty awesome.

Duck fat fries don't sound appealing at first, but I hear good things.

2 loose dogs- not friendly

I was taking out trash when a white and tan pit (not a mix) and a smaller shepherd/terrier mix (black and tan) barked and charged at me. I got inside my gate in time, but they kept barking at me with their heads through the openings in the gate. Is someone missing them? This was on Albany near School street. Please be careful when out walking.

  • I would call Animal control and not be super quick to say aggressive. That's their open license to shoot, you aren't sure they were aggressive and even if they are, the police may identify someone's pet by accident and shoot them.

  • Charging dogs _are_ aggressive. What if this was a child walking by?

Private Drain Program

Anyone have experience with the city's private drain program? We have a city sewer backing up into our place, and video showing where it's coming from. The city tells us we need to a plumber registered with the program, and also that that information is private. They've already shot down two licensed plumbers, anyone with experience on how to break through this runaround?

  • Barbs hey you kids, get off my lawn!

I'd be curious to know how this turned out for the original poster. I just had someone (a plumber/sewer guy) out to inspect and rod my line to the street, and we found collapsed tile under the grass in the parkway. Now we have to call the city, arrange for...

I'd be curious to know how this turned out for the original poster. I just had someone (a plumber/sewer guy) out to inspect and rod my line to the street, and we found collapsed tile under the grass in the parkway. Now we have to call the city, arrange for a city guy to come and witness the sewer guy do another camera inspection. It's not like the sewer guy is coming out for free for the second, city-witnessed, inspection, either, so I get to pay him twice!. How stupid is that? One would think that video or camera-still shots would be adequate proof to the city of a problem. Obviously, they'll either find the break when they dig, or they won't. If there's no break, there should THEN be a process for the city to recoup their wasted time/efforts, not this double-inspection process. It's a racket!

Barbs- that is exactly what we were told as well. We actually never got this issue resolved because we couldn't find an approved plumber willing to work with the city. The ones who have experience with this avoid it like the plague because they found their past experiences working with the city too frustrating and want to stay of their radar and the ones who did agree to work with us ended up not having all the necessary licenses the city requires (both plumbing and sewer). I contacted about 10 different companies before it got too frustrating and gave up. A lot of wasted time and energy and we are exactly where we started. All we have to show for it is video that the city will not look at. I hope you have better luck and if you happen to figure out how to navigate all of this please let me know!

Question regarding early morning garbage pick up.

This morning, at 4:45 a.m. on W. Berteau Ave. between Ridgeway and Lawndale, we were woken up by a private residential garbage pick up service truck (not City service). The truck was parked in the middle of the street. The collectors dragged the commercial size garbage bin from the alley behind an apartment building (making a whole lot of noise), and proceeded to attach it to the truck and empty it. I think this took a few attempts. So, my question is really two fold: 1) Are private garbage services allowed to pick up that early in the morning?; 2) Are they allowed to do this in the middle of the street vs. the alley?

  • There is usually a company name and phone number on the side of the truck. I would contact the owner/manager of the building that uses the dumpster as well. And don't the new wards come into effect in 2015?

  • Chris I jam econo

You'd think that, but they actually began the transfer over a year ago. It's a mess.

Old Alderman won't really service you anymore, cause they don't get your vote. New alderman barely service you, cause you aren't "officially" in their ward yet, but they kinda want your vote.

I was told on two different situations on ward transfers from Mell to Colon, and Mell to Arena, start using new alderman, a year ago, by all aldermen involved.

Found a bike

I usually just find garbage in my front yard -- one time I found a mug of soup with the spoon still in it. But yesterday, I found a boys' bike in kind of rough shape. It didn't belong to any of my immediate neighbors. I live near Irving and Whipple. If someone is missing an older boys' bike and can provide the correct identifying details, I'll make sure it gets back to you.

  • Adam preeozniak Avondale resident

Any chance it's a gold fixed gear bike. Black rims. Stickers in it? I had a bike stolen recently in the area.

  • IB

Adam, no - it's a kids bike. I'm sorry about your bike, though. What a bummer.

3452 W. Irving Park Ave. - Chicago Coffee House

This has had a sign for "Coming Soon" for quite a while now. Anyone have details on the place? Is the owner on Everyblock? I've been excited for a local, non Dunkin/McDonald's coffee shop in the area as I consider this area a coffee desert unless you go far west to Portage or South to Logan Square.

Looks like the building sold at the end of October 2013 but the coffee house has been "Coming Soon" for about 7 months.

  • Total coffee desert. I hope you guys are right. There's that other one that was supposed to open on Elston in the old wood stripper storefront across from Cat's Meow, but I haven't seen any progress on that shop either. I'd even take a Caribou at this point (Starbuck's level desperation hasn't quite set in yet).

  • We are in need of a good coffee house! Fingers crossed!!

Nicor Advanced Energy

Does anyone have experience with Nicor's Advanced flat rate offer? They sent a letter saying I can pay 69 cents per unit for gas for 1 year. They stated the current rate is 81 cents and it went as high as 1.19 over winter. I understand El Nino means a mild winter, so I'm wondering if anyone tried this and found it a good deal.

Food Shelf to donate to?

We have an extra amount of food that is 1 month past the 'best by' date, but it's still good. I believe that some places still accepts food up to 6 months past the 'best by' date. It's snack foods: 5 single bottles of Faygo pop, 5 packages of choco chip cookies, 3 boxes of granola bars, 6 corn muffin mixes, etc.

We thought we'd be able to find a church in Avondale or nearby, or a women's shelter or HIV House that we could donate to. But when I do a search, it keeps pointing me back to The Greater Chicago Food Depository. Is this just a big collection place and then they distribute to other smaller food shelves?

Do you know of a specific place/church that is perhaps in Avondale that would take our food, even though it has passed the 'best by' date?

Thank you, in advance, :)

Meet your neighbors.....I've met quite a few great ones from right around the block you reference! The official CAPS beat meeting is the first Thursday of the even months (next meeting August 7th 7pm at st. Nicholai's church 3000 N Kedzie). There is also a community meeting the last Thursday of every month -- same time and place at St. Nicholai's.

Fireworks, still!

Who else is getting tired of hearing the fireworks go off in Irving Park. I am so over them. It is seriously almost 10 days after the 4th, and people are still setting them off. Enough is enough. Loud things exploding at 10 o'clock at night is so very inconsiderate.

    Welcome to Chicago.

  • yep I know. Luckily by me it hasn't been M80s just bottle rockets and a few mortar color ones.

  • last night again. The excuse they gave my husband was that the fireworks are leftovers. I don't really care. It's Monday night, July 14-some of us actually have to go work. Enough already.

Looking for a good hair stylist

I have short hair and I am looking for a local hair stylist. I used to go to XOX salon on Milwaukee but the last haircut I got there was the worst haircut I ever received so I am not going back there.
Any suggestions?

Looking for Cleaning Person-Home

We are looking for a cleaning person for our single family home. We are in Irving Park near Albany and Waveland. Would like to start off with monthly cleaning. I'd rather hire an individual vs a service. Must be okay with a dog and cat. Dog is very friendly, cat is older and hides or hisses but that is about it. We do not have children, so it is just two adults and two pets. We can discuss house size privately.

We don't need laundry done, just regular cleaning.

If you don't want to leave your details publicly-message me through here. Thank YOU!

  • Hi there - I am very happy to recommend Bozena, a nice Polish cleaning lady who has worked for us for a long time. Her phone number is 773-501-6245 I know you'll be happy with her service and she charges very reasonably.

  • Contact Gail at 773-412-4245,she does our house and is excellent! Reasonable prices, and very detailed

  • Grace Housekeeper

I have many years of experience and many long time clients who would gladly provide referrals. I can provide you with a free estimate at your preferred date and time. Please feel free to call me at 773-858-0926

Gang Tags - Irving and Lowell

On a nice big wall.
This is super concerning to me because it's another gang SGD (xxx gangster disciples?) dissing, probably the kings. Looks like the bangers are off to a late start this year with the tagging.
It's not too often that I see them tag the cross streets they are repping. IDK, this is trash. I already put in for 311 graffiti removal, and spoke with 17th district.

I run into gang tags here and there, but this one seems very violent to me on a large scale because of the blatant message it's sending to a rival gang. And it's pretty big, and WELL lit at night...the pics I took were at night with no flash.

Be careful - this tag went up last night or early this evening (probably last night)

I'm not here to argue with you, I'm just telling you what the police told me. They said it was dangerous to remove graffiti yourself, and to call 311 and wait for graffiti busters.

Even Avondale Neighborhood Association and other groups have hosted their own clean up graffiti day and posted pictures of themselves doing it publicly. We should not live in fear of retaliation. How odd that you have heard that from a police officer. I will bring it up again at our next CAPS meeting.

Calling 911 is something that we all must do when we see these kinds of occurrences in our community. However, having been part of beat meetings in other districts of the city, the city of chicago along with the chicago police department insist on citizens calling in "anonymous" and always make it seems like the right thing to do.

Of course, the most important thing is to call 911--but calling in anonymous isn't the same as calling and telling the city dispatchers that you want to see, speak to the police and if you must will sign complaints.

City officials always stand at these news conferences after bloody weekends and say "the community" must come out and speak up, that these crimes are going to solve themselves under the "no snitching" ideology---but they want you to be anonymous.

my point: if our community (irving park/albany park) is ever going to survive this turning point in gun/gang violence---- We must willing to give our name, number, and go to court---being in fear of this only weakens our community. Not doing this only means the criminals have already won.

Maybe I am wrong but I think the model of success should be a combination of a few things. Funding for police/fire, schools, infrastructure.

Police and fire for the obvious reasons. Help is close when you need it. That will cut down on crime and emergencies will get covered in record time. Make sure all equipment is fully funded and in good shape. Replace old equipment with new and advanced technology.

Schools need proper funding. Teaching children with the best tools and the most up to date information. Safe and quality built schools. No charters. Spend our tax dollars repair schools and hiring the best teachers who love to teach. We must give them the tools needed. Parents and teachers can teach right from wrong and encourage intelligent thoughts and ideas. Good ideas and hard work should be rewarded. As a nation and city we are falling behind in education. Cutting funding is a terrible idea. Who here thinks the model for a successful school system is to cut funding for books and learning tools. Every school needs a library, art rooms and outdoor playground access. Well taught children will be less likely to use drugs and be criminals. Of course that's not 100% but it's a start.

Then of course infrastructure. Solid roads, bridges and access to everything from museums to proper nutrition. No more food deserts. Close the city to more mcdonalds and Burger King locations while encouraging solid choices and providing proper access through good roads. Safe streets provided by our police and fire with the protections in place by our friends and neighbors. Proper sewer, water, and high speed internet for everyone. Put sanctions on Comcast and AT&T that stop high speed access to telecommunication. Updated infrastructure will encourage new business growth and new updated homes. Keeping historic buildings in tact.

Once we start with a solid foundation the people will do the rest.

  • good to know Chris. At least with non-owner occupied houses or apartments if you know of activity-let the alderman's office know. First thing they will do is pull 911 records to see how many calls have been placed to the address and then they go from there.

Hello all, I am looking for some good roofing work at a fair price. I have a Chicago style bungalow that hasn't been done in 20 years, but it is starting to need it now, even though there are no leaks or anything as of yet. I would also need the back porch addition to have new siding put up on it. I have had a few companies come out for estimates, but they have been wildly different from $10K up to over $20K with Allendorfer. I really don't want to sink $20K, but don't want to try for going too cheap and have problems. Also, I was wondering, has anyone gone without gutters? Right now a couple spots in my gutters are warped so basically most of the water comes off in a couple places before it can get to a downspout, and this hasn't seemed to bother the foundation at all over the last decade. Any recommendations would be much appreciated

  • I also like Nyberg for telling me what I didn't actually need. We bought an old house and the home inspector recommend we get a few things checked. Andy came out and checked those things, fixed some but also told me not to bother on somethings, what to look for as they did age, and even suggested another company for windows that he said would give me a better deal - even though he could have done them for me. That takes guts and earns major points in my book.

  • A&K very interested in who replaced your roof.
