Neighbor's Dog Waste - Concerned about flies this summer...

At the risk of sounding like an annoying neighbor I could use some advice.

Moved into the neighborhood last August, and since then I've noticed that my next door neighbor allows his 3 dogs to defecate in his back yard (which I have no problem with.... it is his yard). The issue is that he never cleans up. About once a month his landscapers come by and rake up some of the feces, but a lot just gets pushed to the fence line.

This ends up breeding TONS of flies in the warmer months. I put out traps when I moved in last summer, but they stink terrible themselves, and only somewhat help.

It's made being in my yard or on my deck absolutely terrible in the summer months. Hundreds and hundreds of flies are buzzing around the yards and the bites are terrible!
I plan on talking to my neighbor as it gets warmer, but wanted to know if there is any ordinance or law regarding waste in a yard.
I thought about pesticides, but with a newborn in my household and his animals on his yard, I'd hate to use it on my property and risk any adverse effects...

I plan on building a bigger, non-chain link fence in a year or two; but its just not in the budget this summer... And it wont really help with the flies anyways.

So its that time to pick up the neighbor's leaves for them

Piles of dead leaves remain on the sidewalk since Fall.. I guess I'm the only person that realizes this looks ridiculous.

I opened a ticket with SeeClickFix, it was closed - nothing happened. Opened another ticket, nothing.

So I will just go buy a rake and clean up all these leaves myself. Have a nice weekend everybody and if you see somebody raking and bagging leaves and trash, that is me. Say hello! :-)

Talk about pandering

Well that's enough of me talking about me, I will stop and let you talk about me.

And silly me I thought the two mailers a day that have been stuffed into my mail box everyday. Funny thing is not one of the mailers touts any single positive thing that has been brought into the ward, only finger pointing and name calling.

    PAC,

    1) I do not know.

    2) Time due is when a PO takes time instead of money, in the case of overtime and court time. This time is used by the hour, example a PO has a child who is performing in a local dance for, lets say school. The child wants their father to go but it falls on his shift day, he puts in a slip for a couple hours on the front. It gets denied because the district cannot due to manpower allow, meaning the shift would fall below a minimum staffing level. That is, from what I have been told, is the biggest problem in 16. The best districts would be manned properly and most likely not so geographically spread out, pretty much anywhere else.

3)4) But there are "shoulds" in politics. Last election,14 went to a run off that was a wake up for the powers that be. As we move forward as a city more common people are making historic changes in local government. People much like John Arena, who himself was a small business owner that was seeking changes in an area that was stagnant.

    5) The road diet and petition should have been avoided from the very start. Before I signed, I called the office to find out what exactly was being proposed, when my concerns received no answer I signed the petition.

  • Chuck,

I think that the Mayor's office forced the timing of the Milwaukee Av CSP expressly to affect the election. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Mayor gave Garrido a running start with prior notice.

Are there any "best" districts under the current CPD manpower levels?

Because the theater is small all of the seats seemed good. Drinks and snacks were available.

The first play is End Days. Probably not suitable for children but very funny at times and poignant at others and the acting was very impressive. We thoroughly enjoyed it and it seemed the rest of the audience agreed.

  • Thanks for the review Katie. We have tix in April, so I'm glad too hear the venue/performance are living up to the hype.

  • kvee California and irving park resident

They are also offering tickets on sale at Groupon for the April 2nd show.

  • For a non profit, they sure poured a lot of money into the place, btw, that new restaurant on Kedzie by Belle Plaine, Howard Quintero is providing all the food except for the candy and nuts type stuff.

Traffic study at Elston and Kimball?

I feel the root of the problem is the length of the green light for Kimball traffic. It is very short - half the length actually (I believe) of the Elston green light. I feel like there could be a change in timing on the weekends at a minimum to up the green light time (as there's less Elston traffic on the weekend vs. a weekday, and MUCH more Kimball traffic).

Thoughts? Ideas? Anyone agree?

  • If that stop sign wasn't there, you would never get through Kimball on Grace going west. I take it all of the time to avoid Addison to get to 90/94, the only reason you can get through it because of it.

  • Yeah, basically you need a stop sign because otherwise people would just block the intersection—which half the time they do anyways because literally no one understands that being a selfish jerk on the road is what actually causes 96% of traffic jams.

Updated info on Red Light Camera possible defense

A couple of people have emailed me about a post I made on EB a while ago about getting a red light camera ticket dismissed based on the fact the "MAKE" of the vehicle is listed as "OTHR" on the ticket, even though from the photo of the violation you can readily tell the "MAKE." The municipal code I cited in that old post seems to be different than where the rule is now, so I wanted to update the information.

Municipal Code 90-100-030 (b) (in part):
"The issuer of the notice shall specify on the notice his identification number, the particular parking or compliance ordinance allegedly violated, THE MAKE (my emphasis) and state registration number of the cited vehicle, and the place, date, time and nature of the alleged violation and shall certify the correctness of the specified information by signing his name as provided in Section 11-208.3 of the Illinois Vehicle Code, as amended."

Illinois Code 625 ILCS5/11208.3 (2) (in part):
"With regard to automated speed enforcement system or automated traffic law violations, VEHICLE MAKE (my emphasis) shall be specified on the automated speed enforcement system or automated traffic law violation notice if the make is available and readily discernible."

If you can discern the MAKE from the photo, you can try this defense. It worked for me, because in law, ALL of the "elements" (requirements) of an ordinance must be true to find the person guilty of the infraction.

When I went to the hearing, I printed out copies of the ordinance and state law, and made sure I had my vehicle registration with me, and that you could tell the MAKE by the photo. It worked and my ticket was dismissed. I have no idea what might happen if you mail this in. Maybe someone is willing to try it and see what happens.

BTW, I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, just a neighbor passing on some info.
Good luck!

I don' know - I contested in person. When I argued the timing part, and the wet and recently snowed part, it didn't move the administrative "judge" but then I told him, wait, I have another defense, and argued the Municipal Code defense (of Make is listed as OTHR and you can clearly see the Make of the car in the photo, plus the Secretary of State has the Make of my car in their records) he left me off.

stephc27 cites the codes. You can goggle these and should get to the places in the code where that is, and print it out.

Sorry, stephc27, that it didn't work for you. I read recently in the paper that a lawyer is doing a class action suit to challenge the red light tickets, and one of the arguments seems to be not having the Make on the ticket in violation of the ordinance.

Here's the report on CLTV with text. http://cltv.com/2015/03/24/new-lawsuit-challenges-chicagos-speed-and-red-light-cameras/

Carol, one thing, you may as well try the defense, because if it flys, then you get out of it, if not, at least you tried. I shared it here hoping more people could defend themselves against these computerized cops.

  • Beeb, thanks so much. It's always worth contesting, even if you lose! And the "Make" idea was a great tip. The codes are very clear. The ticket should be dismissed, but they are just ignoring that. Would really like to to join that lawsuit!

Well PAC, we don't have 4 years to let him prove himself. Chuy needs to hit the ground running with a solid plan in place in order to be effective, but he's already laying excuses on us that Rahm won't share the information. Rahm is not the gatekeeper of the books. They're public records, and with a little effort, any citizen should be able to access them. Any one of the aldermen/women who were presented with the budget and voted on it should have that document, as well as reports for the actual spending against that budget. Look at Finance Committee meeting minutes! Any voter who would buy this lame excuse is just a fool. Chuy sells himself as a consensus builder, so why doesn't "Mr Consensus" have access to this info?
Let's give the guy who's already improving the city's financial position the opportunity to continue to root out waste and bring business investment to Chicago. He's a "hard a**" who is the perfect personality type needed to turn this 20+ year old financial mess around. I don't want another whiner who's already hiding behind lame excuses before he's even elected!

It confirms people's beliefs who already think this way. I'm waiting for the hard evidence, not conjecture and fear. I happen to think that a rise in minimum wage is a good thing all around. There may be bad unintended consequences, but I really don't understand the conservative perspective not on paying people better...other than the wealthy keep on getting wealthier.

I am trying to keep this to a logical argument, but you are putting little faith in people and your 20 or $100 argument is a little silly. Nobody is taking your $15 dollars/ hour. People earning on a more equal scale would be better for the middle class that you are concerned about. I thought conservative were all about letting people do what they want with their money? You are saying that $15 is bad because people won't save it or spend it the way that you think they should.

Anyway, I'm sorry, I don't buy into fear politics and although I wholeheartedly disagree with your argument, I respect your opinion. Time will tell though.

As you can see it's been bery frustrating. Also the speeds test out about 14 down and I'm paying for like 40 or 50. They also have no resolution for that.

I was told that when a property is sold that the Cook County Recorder does not notify the Cook County Assessor or the Cook County Treasurer. I see just around where I live home owners exemptions are being taken by Developers who have owned the property over year and home owners that rent out their homes. If you look at the Cook County Treasurer site the properties are in the former owner's name and the developer have paid the lower tax because the home owner's exemption is still applied. Also does the assessment show the value of the old homes that have been majorly rehabbed and worth a lot more. How often does someone go out and look at these properties. Or people getting senior exemptions when it's not a single family home and has rental apartments.

Before they raise our property taxes shouldn't there be a more efficient and effective ways of determining what real estate tax is due on each property?. Instead of raising our taxes shouldn't they make sure everyone is paying what they are suppose to pay?

Business labor-cost increases offset by increase in prices. Oakland, restaurants are raising prices by 20%, SF Chronicle “some of the city’s top restaurateurs fear they will lose customers to higher prices.” are eliminating tips as they raise prices.
this change in compensation practices has reduced the take-home pay for some of the employees it was supposed to help: Oakland restaurant Homestead, servers are taking “a substantial pay cut,” earning a flat wage of $18 to $24 an hour, no tips instead of the $35 to $55 an hour they were earning when tips were included.

The Abbot’s Cellar—forthcoming $15 minimum wage, compelled its owners to close. the restaurant had no ability to absorb the added cost, and neither a miraculous increase in sales volume nor higher prices were viable options.
These aren’t isolated. In the SoMa neighborhood, a vegetarian diner called The Source closed in January, citing the higher minimum wage. Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, 10 restaurants or grocery stores opted to permanently close this year. Is this your brown tabby?

In the process of searching for my lost cat, I found this sweet brown tabby the morning of Saturday, March 21. Very sweet with a cute squeaky meow. Seems like an indoor cat who may have been out on the streets for a little while-some injuries from scuffles. I took this cat to Anticruelty Society to get medical attention and to find its home, but now he has been transferred to Animal Care and Control. If this sounds like your cat, please check with them!!! Or if you would like to adopt this sweet cat and give him a chance, please contact me!!!

Where is the best place to safely advertise for a roomate(s)? I have been searching for weeks and having trouble and the crazy thing is the apartment is GORGEOUS. I'm looking for one or two females to share the space with me. I have put a bed in one of the rooms The rent is 750 so if it was two ppl it would be $400 for the room with the bed and 350 for the room without. I'm happy to send pics to anyone interested.

About the apartment: it's a furnished 3 BR. There IS a bed in one room so you don't need to worry about that! You can add a sitting chair (wing or recliner) and dresser. There is ample closet space in the bedroom. The other bedroom has no bed. There is also a large kitchen and bathroom, small mudroom, front patio, back yard, back enclosed patio/storage, laundry in building and lots of storage. I will also be adding a portable fireplace soon. Free parking on the street. 5 min to the blue line and 90/94. It is centrally located and easy to reach anywhere you need quickly and efficiently.

A little bit about myself, I am quiet down to earth and hard working. I work a very early shift and am in my office by 7 or 8 am so I need someone that respects quiet times at night. I don't have many visitors or parties but when I do, we will respect the other roommate in the house. I have two dogs- they are very very friendly and totally lovable.

Rent is $750 (for one person getting both rooms) or $400 for the furnished room and $ $300 for the unfurnished room payable on the 1st of the month. And utilities are an additional $75 a month. Security deposit is one months rent and move in date is anytime.

Let me know what you think and I can send you pictures!

On his website he states "Portage Park is on the front line of this battle, and we need all the resources we can get to keep this and other ward neighborhoods safe. I know and understand how the Chicago Police Department works. As alderman, I will demand that our community is provided with the necessary police manpower and equipment to combat these violent gangs and keep our streets safe."
http://johngarrido.com/issues/public-safety/

At his current position has he demanded more officers be brought to the ward? Many may say that is not his job, but when you google "What does a police lieutenant do?" you get
"As a police lieutenant you lead. You're the frontline commander of the police department. You pass orders from the top level of command to the police sergeants, who in turn relay those orders to the police officers and detectives."

He says he will demand more officers as alderman but has he done the same as a lieutenant? If he has not at his current position why would that change when he is an alderman?

Welcome, Tim and Rebekah. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in Old Irving Park, you might want to check out our neighborhood association. www.oldirvingpark.com. We have a monthly newsletter delivered to your door, weekly e-mail blast with activities, daily facebook updates, and monthly meetings. Oh - and a really active google group!

  • Welcome! I hope you like it, it's a great place to start and stay. You have come at an excellent time; the six corners area has been slowly turning around and filling in more vacant spots, you'll never know what new store or business will open up next. If you have any questions or concerns, this is a great web site to get support from your community. :)

Pet Sitter/Dog walker

Hey Everyblockers! If anyone is in need of pet sitting or dog walking I am available. I am in the middle of transitioning to a new job and could use the extra money. (Currently employed at a pet store, making the switch to a veterinary clinic, so I have a lot of experience.) I am posting here two of my pages, my Rover profile and my Craigslist ad for pet sitting for further information if anyone is interested. I would love to meet some of the fur babies in my area and potential friends for my own dog who is a friendly, small shepherd mix boy. Contact me if you have any questions!

Flasher

Hello neighbors!

I was out walking my dog today at the corner of Lawndale and Barry. A white male with grey hair, a red baseball cap, and blue jeans, about 6', maybe 160/170 lbs passed us, paused, and then turned around. When he turned around he had pulled his penis out. Just hanging out of his jeans. He walked down the ally(parallel to Milwaukee) toward Monticello. Couldn't see where he went after that. I called and reported to police. Just wanted to give the neighborhood a heads up.

  • Update! Saw the guy around the same place he flashed me, Lawndale and Barry. He must live in the neighborhood. I will try to get a picture next time I see him.
