We have very happy news! Butch was found tonight around 7 pm in the alley near Sunnyside and Central Park...nearly a mile from our home. We received a call from a teenage boy, Luis, who had seen a flyer we posted at the bus stop on Irving Park at Elston on his way to school. He had seen Butch walking around the street near his house this morning and yesterday afternoon and thought it was a neighborhood dog. After talking to me, Luis recruited 3 of his friends and they scoured the alleys in the neighborhood and finally found him. They called us and we came running. I didn't believe it on the way there, readying myself for a joke or the wrong dog. But there he was, all bundled up in one of the boy's flannel shirts. I scooped him up in my arms and cried.

We are sure that a teenager took him based on the scooter left behind at our gate. After seeing that he was not a puppy, but instead a blind, old dog, the little jerk dumped him rather than bringing him back to us.

But Luis and his friends put my faith back in teenagers. These boys are my heroes and I am forever grateful to them. Yes, they got reward money, but they were truly happy to see us reunited and proud to be a part of our happiness.

Thank you all so much for you support and prayers.

Frank the Chicken is Missing

My neighbor is missing his rooster from his yard. Frank (the rooster) has lived in the yard for years. Last Friday, we saw Frank on Elbridge. (Sometimes he strolls around the neighborhood.) Then today, I saw the missing signs on light posts. Frank lives at the corner of Elbridge and Drake. Attached is a blurry photo of Frank from last Monday and the flyer. Please help bring Frank back to his yard. He's got a nice, warm dog/ rooster house and a couple of cats and an owner who misses him.

Gunshots near 3800 N block of Monticello last night?

Anyone hear what sounded like loud gunshots last night near 3800 N Monticello? Around 1am. 8-10 shots.

  • Tom G Living in Avondale since 1994

Yes. Sunday night at about 1:30 am. I checked the time because it woke me up and called 911 to report shots fired. But I heard this near 3400 Monticello--that's on the other side of Addison--and it sounded real close. A few quick bursts about 12 shots total.

  • Thanks Tom

  • We heard it too. We are over about 3800 Bernard.

Physician

Anyone know of a good physician that treats anxiety. My physician left to another state and my therapist is booked until December.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Your primary care doctor should be able to refer you to a specialist

  • Tom G Living in Avondale since 1994

Any physician can prescribe anti-anxiety meds for you for the short term and will probably refer you to a psychiatrist, which is the kind of physician that treats anxiety. If you just want a compassionate physician who has dealt with people with anxiety, I will recommend Dr. Paul Abbo. Look him up online. He might even refer you to a therapist who can fill in until yours returns. In any case, keep looking and don't give up. My prayers are with you.

  • MakeChicagoSafe Please keep our Chicago Safe

Thanks so much Tom G I'll look him up...

Cleveland School construction?

Hi! Anyone have kids going to Cleveland and know what the construction is all about? I live three houses away and am glad they aren't just laying down useless sod to be trampled to dust. I wish I knew what was happening; they don't have any information posted on their website. Anyone know what's happening there?

  • Installing a "field turf" field. They are working on the drainage now. Seems silly they waited to start until the week before classes but better than never. Agree that putting down sod there is futile. Last year it turned to dust in, what, a month?

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

  • What if we all go in together as a group? I have always wondered what it looks like inside!!!

  • I bet Dr. Who's Time Machine is in there !

IGS- Bait and switch

People are going around the Irving Park area in Yellow Jackets claiming to need to confirm your ComEd bill. I thought it was strange, so I looked up previous posts. It ends up when they look at your bills, they switch your energy service to IGS without your permission. Just be cautious.

  • A&K

Thanks for the warning. Sure sounds like fraud to me.

Shred-a-thon?

Did anybody ever find the shredder at the Independence Park market this morning? Went over there 3 times, first from 9-10am, then back at 11, and again at noon. No shredder truck to be found. Anybody know of another shredder event coming up?

Damaged Mail once again!

Anyone else in the neighborhood constantly receiving opened or damaged packages? I'm home during the day and get the packages as soon as they arrive so it's clearly happening in the handling process. Also did anyone else move their mailbox down to street level because the post office said that they would not delivery mail over 5 steps?

  • Matt Alexander Chicagoan since 2012

I've filled complaints and support tickets and they get forwarded to the post office in question. Then they get closed without any actual action having been taken. They don't care and they don't seem to have any oversight.

  • We have never had one complaint in 14 years on our block in 60618. I engage with our carrier he is super nice. Do you know who your regular carrier is? I would ask them personally what is going on.

graffiti saturday night in avondale

http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/vnn/4656288542.html

They tagged several peaceful homes in the area like really tuff guys. Same Blue acrylic paint on each one, Latin King symbols all over, upside down forks, etc.

Well, as they ran when I came outside (one on bmx bike, three on foot), one of the four dropped their Cricket phone which has several photos of old boy himself. Truly brilliant.

Didn't bother calling the cops because they are worthless (shout out to all the lazy cops who get dunkin every day but don't do anything about the homeless needle camp at Kimball & 90 literally ten yards away), but here is the pencil-thin mustache-sporting tough guy who is too dumb to keep his selfies off his SD card let alone keep his phone in his pocket. If you live in the neighborhood, maybe this can help ID him or his crew. At least you know what he looks like now.

City Graffiti team was out today finally and removed remaining paint from tagging and painted the garage door and it looks completely new (I swear they painted it). So i think (as most of this thread has concluded) it is most effective with a multi-pronged approach.

    1. Citizen policing - "if you see something, say something"
    2. Alert the police so they can map activity
    3. Submit a claim via the web to get the city out to remove it (and track it - i liked this better than 311 - because it is trackable and you get a job #)
    4. Follow up with 311 if nothing is happening
    5. Remove the tag to prevent countertagging - right away - (paint thinner etc)
    6. If all goes well, the City Graffiti Busters program will have garage door looking good as new (it happened for me)

Stolen Mail?

Hey Everyone, seems like our street is getting packages stolen with regularity. Is anyone around Monticello/Central Park and School having similar issues? I just don't know what to do. I can't get to the mail fast enough, I guess!

  • I live in Logan Square right on Fullerton and the same thing happens to me. I've had 3 packages stolen in the last week because the mailman leaves them right on the street next to my door. I called the office multiple times and finally chased him down after he delivered my mail and it's been better since he now knows to knock on my door. I suggest getting in touch directly with your mail person if you can.

  • I had 2 packages stolen from my front porch, which is behind a 6' metal fence :( at Armitage & California last nite. Disturbing...

shady school bus drivers

has anyone else noticed school bus drivers speeding through residential streets super aggressive?

twice in the last couple days, i have seen school bus drivers driving on cullom really aggressive, way faster than they should, brawling through stop signs, generally not driving the way you'd think a school bus driver should be driving.

also this morning i saw one going south on california, wanting to turn left (east) on irving, and they switched over to the oncoming lane like a half a block before the stop light to get into the turning lane faster. i saw the 'how am i driving' sticker but wasn't able to write down the number. these guys are major a55holes.

A lot of these companies have some shady hiring and firing practices (i.e. not doing proper background checks on school bus drivers and school security guards). Some of these companies have some pending discrimination lawsuits and labor law violations. They don't hire enough bus drivers because more schools have closed and more kids have been added to their routes with fewer buses and the same time table. It is an all around mess.

Green and orange curtains?

Can someone tell me what these places are that I see everywhere? There is no sign, an sometimes there are posters in the window that say something like "Improve Your Life" in Spanish, but the common denominator is that they all have neon green and orange sheers in the windows that keep passersby from looking in. I am intensely curious -- what are these?!

  • Michael M West Walker/Irving Park Homeowner

They're some sort of self-help / herbalife-style hybrid targeted at the Latino community. I believe it's a bit of a "mulit-level marketing" program too (pyramid) selling literature, health drinks, vitamins, etc. A few years back they were open on almost every couple blocks around Avondale, IP, AP, JP, and Mayfair. They've scaled back quite a bit but they're still around.

If you poke your head in or show any interest in any way, they'll work pretty hard to rope you in.

Missing Trash Bins, or Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Hi All-
Just moved into Avondale, and pumped to be here in my new home. Unfortunately while the house was on the market it looks like somebody "borrowed" (stole) our trash cans.
This normally wouldn't be a big deal, as I know you can request new garbage bins from the city...

To bad I did this already. Twice. Over a month ago. I've even contacted the alderman's office to see if anything can be expedited or actually done. Apparently streets...

To bad I did this already. Twice. Over a month ago. I've even contacted the alderman's office to see if anything can be expedited or actually done. Apparently streets and sanitation is "backed up".

The old owner had left his own trash bins behind, which worked well the first trash pickup; except streets and sanitation took the whole bin; there goes that idea...

Just a bit of a venting session here; as the trash is piling up (moving makes a lot of rubbish!) I hate to be the new neighbor with trash bags in the alley!

  • jag

Call 311 and have them send new garbage cans that's what I did

  • Ugh, we still haven't received a requested recycling bin after ours got stolen a few weeks ago. We also put in an in-person request with our alderman to no avail. Obviously I have no advice I'm just here to commiserate.
