Christmas miracle needed!!!

I run a Letters to Santa program through Direct Effect Charities. One of our donors posted here and many of you answered letters. We are so grateful for your support! One child had a very difficult request, he just wants to be safe!! He lives in Englewood with his mom and 2 sisters, ages 9 and 18. The oldest is having a baby so it will be a family of 5. I am seeking a 3 bed\room apartment for them, they currently pay $900 a month in rent and mom has a good job which she has been at for 10 years. Please post or call if you can help them, 312.296.5311. Thank you so much!!

  • Hi Michelle. Do they want to move out of Englewood? Where would be the best place for them to move so the mom doesn't have to travel to far for her job? And are they willing to change schools? Or do they need to stay in Englewood?

  • Yes, they very badly want to move. The mom is more than happy to change their schools and I found out yesterday, she works north so she will actually be closer to work if she lives in most any Northside neighborhood. I collected some newborn clothing as the young girls...

Yes, they very badly want to move. The mom is more than happy to change their schools and I found out yesterday, she works north so she will actually be closer to work if she lives in most any Northside neighborhood. I collected some newborn clothing as the young girls baby is coming today (being induced) and I dropped it off to the mom at work. She was extremely grateful.

My charity sent her 100 GC from Target and a friend sent 50 as we wanted her to have them in time for Christmas in case she needed anything.

If anyone has anything in her price range or is able to lower the rent for a charitable write off, I would be so grateful. The mom is so nice and from meeting and speaking to her, I know she will be a good tenant. Please contact me anytime at all if you know of some thing available.

  • PS I sent the little boys letter to President Obama and asked if he could answer it. He has all their information, phone and address so I am still hopeful he will contact them.

39th Ward Alderman Debate?

Finally there's competition for the job. Anyone know if there's a debate in the works?

  • Robert Murphy, thank you for the offer to discuss your vision, it is appreciated.

  • Just a suggestion to anyone who may be involved in the planning of the debate. I think it would be helpful to those residents not able to attend the debate if a webcast, video and/or transcript is made available. Thanks for organizing this! Looking forward to it.

Shooting at Pulaski and Addison?

Just went out to the 7-11, and there is police tape up, a cruiser there, and obvious little markers for ballistics, with an officer snapping pics. The guy at the 7-11 said that either two cars were shooting at each other, or that a fight over at Brudders went out onto the street and one person shot another. Anyone have any details?

  • Frank Skony Long time Resident

Clarification - the tape and cruiser are outside of the Manee Thai restaurant on Pulaski.

  • from the Tribune this morning: A 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 10:20 p.m. in the Old Irving Park neighborhood, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The man was seating in the front passenger seat in a jeep in the 4000 block of West Addison Street when a male walked up and fired gunshots.

The man was shot in the right thigh and was driven to the 17th District police station before being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition stabilized.

Lost Black Cat

Hello! I'm looking for a stray black cat that I was hoping to take in. He is solid black, including his whiskers and paw pads, with golden eyes. He is definitely male, and unaltered from the best I can tell. I was planning on adopting him, but I haven't seen him in about 2 weeks. He is extremely affectionate, and can be quite loud. Definitely not shy. He's been hanging out with the feral colony near Albany and Waveland. If you took him in yourself, I'm happy to hear he found a good home, but please let me know!

  • I'm a Tree House volunteer but my two rescues are from Harmoney House. I just don't think talking about the horrible things that could happen is helpful. I almost lost my two boys several times. They're sleeping on my porch, their mom comes every night for dinner.

  • I may have I spotted him yesterday! He ran in front of the white house that was foreclosed on 3707 N. Albany. I wonder if a bunch of the stray cats moved in there for warmth? It has been abandoned for months.

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

  • Albany Parker Jane Addams Community Health and Urban Development

Ok so we all know about the graft for the well connected and the claims that this all has been "For the children" and the ridiculous light timings that could not be explained Well the facts are in and the cameras do not improve safety. They are all about the money. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/redlight/ct-red-light-camera-safety-met-20141219-story.html#page=1 FIVE HUNDRED MILLION in fines! How many lives has that affected?

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

The Tribune and Redlight stories are misleading.

They note that the number of T-Bone accidents have been reduced (which is good) but then go on to complain that the number of rear-end accidents have increased.

Rear-end accidents occur because of drivers driving to fast and following to closely, not because of the Red-Light cameras.

Slow down, keep your distance, and drive safely. Quit looking for someone else to blame.

CPS School raffling off Tequila

My child's school is raffling off tequila for a fundraiser. The signs literally said "Tequila kit". I brought this to the attention of the principal who said it would be corrected. Now the fundraiser signs say "Adult drinkable kit". Seriously.

How can I get this some more attention and get the school to put a stop to this?

This is not to say that I do not enjoy an adult beverage from time to time... but a government funded low income public school is not the place to advertise or distribute alcohol.

This is also the school that sent home a letter about peanut allergies and then had PB&J bars on the lunch menu the next day. The same school sells pop and chips after school. Again - a lot of other soapboxes to stand on... but just a glimpse at what we're dealing with.

  • My ire, CJL. Heh. 😜 I am hardly an angry person.
Megan mentioned how a note went home regarding peanut butter allergies & the next day peanut butter was served. I'm merely pointing out that it was most likely Sunbutter, not peanut butter, that was served. If you know a child who can eat peanut butter, but is deathly allergic to Sunbutter, chances are that specific child has an allergy to sunflower seeds. But, I don't know the child and I'm not a doctor.

  • BillDahl Lifelong North Sider

Climb off your high horse, Megan. Unless they're passing out Cuervo shots to the kiddies, there's nothing wrong with the school raffling off alcoholic beverages to adults that happen to enjoy them.

Orange Tabby (name is Chief)

I found an agency that would take in the Orange Tabby from Lawndale if someone is willing to pick up and drop it off. Not sure how to go about this. They believe that the cat is held just for up to 7 days.

  • Scooter's Mom Buena Park resident

This is a relief. Also, if he appears to be further neglected by his current owners, I would be willing to foster him and get him veterinary care until a "forever" home is found. Thanks everyone!

  • PAWS is doing free neutering until the end of the month at their clinic. Also Tree House had affordable services at their clinic in Bucktown. It would be a good idea to pass this info along to the cats owner.

Found cat

Found Orange tabby cat on N Lawndale on School & Lawndale the night of December 12, very friendly and clearly an indoor cat. Brought to the vet, the cat is not fixed and there was no microchip.

Email me for more pictures or details.

Cat was brought to Animal Care and Control:

Cat's number at Animal Care and Control is ID#A122654.

I went to pick up the cat at 2 today and was told that the owner had picked him up earlier today. Hopefully the owner will take proper care of the cat now that he is back home. It's great to know that there are so many pet lovers in the neighborhood.

Addison Mall/New restaurant?

Does anybody have information as to what will be taking over the former Big and Tall space at Addison Mall? We are excited to see what is coming.

  • It is going to be a Panda Express. They are now hiring. I drove down Addison today. The construction is coming along nicely. I have been in the Albany Park /Avondale area my entire life. I am glad to see more business and revenue coming in. Who cares about what the borders are to the neighborhoods. Each one has almost the same problems if not more. It doesn't mean anyone is better then the other because of the area they are from. Just Saying.

Chaps is dog and cat friendly. Potty trained. Obedient. Not an aggressive bone in his body, but he is quite the watch dog. And lots of puppy. He's a great dog that would do great with another pup (he has grown up with dogs) or would learn to appreciate the individual attention in a single dog household.

Although we haven't tested him around kids (we only have a furry fam!), his sister is good with kids and we have every reason to believe he is too.

If you or family/friends been thinking about getting a dog, you should meet him! We'd love to find him a home in the neighborhood and watch this little man grow up. Please help spread the word!

Orange Tabby found on Lawndale now at CACC

I spoke to Dr Abby at Felines & Canines. She is aware of the situation and said they are not able to pick up the cat, but will take him in and put him up for adoption if we could get him to them. She knows me and said she would do this as a favor. I am just not sure what it entails to pick up the cat. When I call CACC they will not release any information to me.

  • You can check out CACC Cat Transfer Teams FB page for instructions on how to pull the cat. Basically you will have to get an approved rescue to put a hold on him and get him pulled.

My husband happened to be in the backyard with the dogs when he tried to open the side gate. The dogs started barking, the man said he lost his flip phone and gps said it was here. We did not open the gate and the man went on his way. I'm sure the barking dogs helped.

We are near Kimball and Montrose. He was a white male, blondish hair, buzz cut, late 20's. He may/may not be doing this around the neighborhood. Just a heads up!

  • AmandaB homeowner, dog lover & real estate agent!

Yes, it is possible it was innocent. I tried to make that clear. The whole thing just seemed odd.

Wanted to let others know in case there was no flip phone afterall (do flip phones even have GPS???) and he was making his way around the neighborhood is all!

  • Even if a flip-phone had GPS, it's highly unlikely it has a backdoor to allow a user to log in remotely and query the phone's location. Next time take his info down, if he's willing to share it, and then keep an eye out.

Hi everyone. I am in the vicinity of Irving park and Kedzie (southwest of it near IHM church). My next door neighbors (next 2 flat over) are Romani Gypsies. While I understand that there are some very nice and honest Romani people, they are the stereotypical ones who run construction and fortune telling scams, let their children throw things out the window at my children, etc. My girlfriend and I (and our kids) move in this place in June. The first interaction I had with them was when I was approached by "Tony", the very large leader of the pack, gold chains and all. He asked me if I lived alone and who I lived with. The second encounter was with the other (younger.. 20s?) male figure in their house. He rang my doorbell (we are on the first floor) and asked if I wanted my sidewalk fixed. I told him I didn't own the property. He repeatedly asked who the owner was and what days they would be here. I shut the door in his face. He has rung the doorbell a few other times but went away after no one answered.

TODAY they rang the doorbell again. I am waiting on a UPS package. I looked out the window and saw big Tony standing there saying to the person on the stairs (who I couldn't see) "no one's there! no ones there!" . I double latched the door and ran to the back of the house to tell the girls to stay in their room. Came back to the living room and saw a U-Haul van speed away down the street, and their pickup truck pull out of the parking space in front of my house.

It sounds like they are casing us. My partner is at work today (we swap days off) and she always has our car, so I'm wondering if they think no one is her because the car is gone. We don't have any valuables but the thought of them trying to scam us is sickening!

Now for the actual message. I live near the intersection of Pulaski and Irving Park. I drive through this occasionally and cross it on foot more frequently. Potholes, people turning left, and light timing makes it dangerous enough. Having people stand and walk around the middle of both streets to panhandle increases the danger factor substantially. I don't drive often, but I'm always terrified of accidentally hitting the person standing or walking in the road to panhandle or hitting another car when I have to drive into another lane to avoid said person. It's even worse when the roads are iced over.

I don't want to call the police (I have no interest in getting anybody arrested), so is there a social service organization I could contact or could the aldermen for the wards that border these intersections get involved? I know Laurino is one, but I'm not familiar with who else might border the intersection. I really don't want to see somebody get hurt out there in the name of making a few dollars.
