January 27, 1973: 42nd anniversary of the Paris Peace Accords and Cease Fire in the Vietnam War

Received this today from a fellow member of the American Legion. An important reminder for each of us not to forget the service and sacrifice of so many...

On January 27, 1973 (42 years ago today) the Paris Peace Accords were signed declaring a cease-fire in Vietnam. The U.S. government, South Vietnam and North Vietnam governments pledged to "respect the independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Vietnam as recognized by the 1954 Geneva Agreements on Vietnam."

The U.S. further agreed to continue withdrawing troops, which resulted in a complete removal of soldiers by March 29, 1973.

Are you happy with recycling in Chicago?

...Are you confused about what you can and can't recycle? Do you find Chicago's recycling and yard waste programs to be less than ideal? Please take 3-4 minutes to complete our Recycling Survey.

Your answers will help the Chicago Recycling Coalition and Chicago's recycling community push for new and better recycling policies throughout Chicago.

CRC thanks you for your help. The more results we receive, the more accurate our survey will be. So please pass along this newsletter or the recycling survey link to people who are concerned about recycling in Chicago.

https://iitcop.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_6WkbgIWkpSvSAER

  • Carter O'Brien Chicagoan

Thanks everyone! Please help spread the word, the more responses, the better the data and more effectively we can lobby for improvements.

  • Here's another thing you can do to promote recycling for all in Chicago:

If you live in an apartment building with 5 or more units that does not provide recycling services, please add your report to our site:

    www.mybuildingdoesntrecycle.com

We are collecting reports to show the city that residents of high-density apartment buildings want the Burke-Hansen ordinance (Chicago's ordinance mandating that high-density buildings provide recycling services) to be enforced.

5 squad cars near Brew and Grow

Mostly noth of brew and grow on Kedzie at 7:30am today. Anyone know what happened?

  • The squad cars were all on the east side of Kedzie--yes, just near the Alderman's office. I'm surprised at the lack of details especially given the time of day, busy location, and proximity to the Alderman and State Rep's offices.

  • The best thing to do is to attend CAPS. Our CAPS beat meeting for 1733 are now every month and combined with 1731 and 1732. Next meeting is Feb 11th at 6:30PM Athletic Field House on Addison across from KMART.

The Most Epic Post Regarding Lost and Found Dogs (and other animals)

Hi, your neighborhood shelter volunteer here. Here is accurate info and links to get lost animals back home.

If your pet is LOST:

PLEASE go and physically look at Chicago Animal Care and Control at 2741 S. Western. Its the only shelter in Chicago that holds stray dogs. CACC is open for lost pet searches from 12pm to 6pm: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cacc.html

CACC is open for lost pet searches from 12pm to 6pm: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cacc.html

you can do a "virtual search" of shelters up to 200 miles from your zip code on www.petharbor.com - Don't get too picky with the search terms. This is NOT a substitute for physically checking the shelter.

If your pet is microchipped, call the chip company to report your pet lost. Make sure they have your current phone and address. Keep this information current - some chipped animals are found weeks, months, or even years after they get lost.

Post to Lost Dogs Illinois on Facebook - this is a volunteer group that reunites lost pets and their owners. They may take time to approve your post.

make flyers - they should have a clear photo, a valid phone number and/or email (a "throw away" email, such as "FindFluffy@_____.com" is a good idea) and the word "REWARD". Post at vets, police and CTA stations, stores, etc.

If someone claims to have found your pet, ask them to meet you at a vet or a police station - some people try to claim $$ without giving you the pet.

It is common for pets to be lost for days before someone finds them. Look in shelters outside the city - people who find pets don't always take them to the closest shelter.

If you FOUND a pet:

If the animal is NOT friendly enough for you to safely handle, PLEASE call 311 and ask for an animal control officer to pick the pet up. CACC is NOT some sort of mass euthanasia nightmare. It may take up to 24 hours for an officer to arrive, so plan to keep the pet safely confined for that amount of time.

ALWAYS TAKE A LOST PET TO THE CLOSEST STRAY-HOLDING SHELTER. In Chicago this is CACC at 2741 S Western.

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

I'd also like to add that while you may have heard that the city will be shortening the stray holding period from five days to three days, that's not entirely true - most animals will still be held for a MINIMUM of five days, but private rescue groups will be...

I'd also like to add that while you may have heard that the city will be shortening the stray holding period from five days to three days, that's not entirely true - most animals will still be held for a MINIMUM of five days, but private rescue groups will be allowed to transfer animals out "early" at three days, as opposed to having to wait the full five day period to transfer. Being placed in CACC's adoption program or being euthanized still will not take place until after the five days is up. Having even a few animals leave "early" for rescue will actually mean more space for animals that are coming in, which will actually mean less euthanasia.

I was going to include this in my main post but that 2000 character limit - yeesh!

Garbage everywhere

Hi, I was wondering what we can do about the garbage in the streets and in the yards. I live on a corner and don't have a fence and the front of my house is so littered with trash that I'm embarrassed to invite people over. I always ask people to come through the back door. I have picked up numerous garbage bags of trash and then it's all piled up again the next day. It's disgusting. Any ideas on how to make this better?

  • Thand for the ideas. I will contact the alderman for sure and ask for more signs and trash cans on the corners. I also think bringing more programs into the schools would be helpful. The neighborhood cleanups are a good idea and hopefully the ones that litter will take notice, but it really doesn't fix the problem because the streets are dirty again a few days later.

  • I live on a corner too. I clean up trash twice a day. People go to fast food places and eat in their car and out the window it goes when garbage cans are near by. We also have a high school close by and I have seen them clean...

I live on a corner too. I clean up trash twice a day. People go to fast food places and eat in their car and out the window it goes when garbage cans are near by. We also have a high school close by and I have seen them clean out their car and they see me picking up the trash. I have told them I am not your maid. I even put the trash on their windshield after they left. It is parents not teaching their kids who grow up to be adults. I saw a mom walking down the street with her kid going thru her mail and just throwing it on the ground as she walked tearing it to pieces making it even worse. I said something to her and she had the nerve to say that it fell out of her hand by accident. I told her do you think I am some kind of idiot! I handed her my bag and made her pick it up and said she should be a better example to her child. I don't know what the answer is. We have a neighborhood clean and green every spring and year by year more families are coming out on my street. So hopefully something will stick. We also make the high school kids commit to the clean and green too for their community service hours. Someday I hope.

I wanted to introduce myself to the community and share some observations with my fellow neighbors. I live by the Addison and Pulaski intersection (I believe that's Avondale area?), I live with my partner and his family. I had moved from Albany Park, where I was a witness to a shooting, and coincidentally I also witnessed the shooting by Addison and Pulaski last month (talk about wrong place at the wrong time).
Before I moved in with my partner he assured me that his neighborhood, or at least his block was safe. However, I'm starting to notice that, that might not be the case soon. For one I have noticed increased tagging on buildings on Pulaski, more specifically the old Frame building they are currently remodeling, the black door next to Windy Cindy Market, and many more.
More recently, this past Sunday (January 18), while driving back home we scared off two guys on our block. One ran off into the yard of a house and the other tried to casually walk away. When we drive back around they had already met up again and were walking south on Karlov by Eddy.
I have also seen an increase hit on my RSS feed for crimes in my area, around Belmont and Kevin, and that is really starting to concern me.
I would love to get to know my neighbors a lot better and see if we can come up with a way to ensure our neighborhood doesn't get any worse. I am open to any idea; meeting up, flyers, whatever it takes.
Anyway, that is it for now, hope y'all have a great Friday.

  • I live by Addison and Pulaski, but I venture regularly into the Avondale area. I was just pointing out that this increased crime activity is terrible in any neighborhood, but it's proximity especially concerns me.
Thank you guys for the other suggestions, I will definitely be looking into the CAPS meetings in my neighborhood and I will see if I can plan something with my neighbors.

  • Independence Park had this issue 20 years ago. The neighbors banded together, communicated and even went as far as patrolling the park after dark and they worked with police. The neighborhood is fine now. Patrolling could be as easy as talking to neighbors who walk dogs and ask them to be alert. I live at Addison and Pulaski also and have lived her for 15+ years with children. I second the CAPS meetings. They are very helpful.

Walking on Sacramento under highway

Does anyone regularly walk on Sacramento under the highway? It is the best route to get where I need to go occasionally starting in February, but I don't love the under the bridge feeling... I'll give it a try but I'm just curious if folks walk there regularly, have any problems, are other people walking there too etc? I would need to walk there around 8am and 5pm. Thanks!

  • Laura social worker, vegan, avondale resident

I walk, bike, and jog through there frequently. I think that as long as you stay aware of your surroundings, you'll be okay. I also agree that the hours you'll be there are ones that are high traffic, so you probably won't be isolated as you walk under the highway.

  • Thanks all!
