suspicious guy going door to door

Just had a guy (about 20 years old) come to my door. Said he wanted to buy a house on our street (3000 block of Gresham) and asked if we were selling. Had a camera and notebook and was going door to door. Seemed weird because I don't know many 20 year olds buying houses, plus there's already 3 homes for sale on our block and that didn't seem like a legit way to find a property to buy. Not sure if I'm overreacting but only wanted to put it out there for anyone else to be on the look out just in case.

  • Maybe Fishman is starting an intern program.

  • That's probably just a kid making peanuts, collecting leads for a house flipper.

  • Alex52 20 something enjoying the city

Did he ask you anything that would seem suspicious? e.g. security systems, thefts in area, problems, abandon buildings, etc..

Buying a Condo

Thinking about buying a Condo around Milwaukee and Central Park.
Any feedback on the area? Are there any plans for new retail in that section of Milwaukee ave?

Thanks

If I were looking for a new neighborhood, I would seriously consider the area near Milwaukee/Central Park. I like La Farine and Tacos Tequila, and the pace of life in that neighborhood doesn't seem as frenetic (or expensive) as Logan Square. I live near the heart of Logan Square but enjoy hiking up NW on Milwaukee to get a break from some of the trendiness (which I also enjoy). The neighborhood resembles what Logan used to be like 15 years ago. The housing stock isn't as formal but there are some interesting buildings and I enjoy wandering around up there.

  • It depends on what you are looking for but I love the area. La Farine alone is worth it! Like Keith said, less frenetic, trendy and expensive. Just a bit north and you have access to the best polish markets in the area. go for it!

Belmont Kedzie viaduct

Does anyone know whats going on over there on Belmont and Kedzie they started working on closing up the bridge but it seems everything has stopped.

  • I don't like the homeless living in there (didn't like walking past at 6:30 am when some are clearly drunk and/or high and I'm alone), but being tunneled in is even worse.

However, this halfsie business where they just left it looks like garbage! In typical style they don't know what to do so they just left it unfinished and it looks awful and makes the hood look like trash :/

  • teresa avondale concerned citizen

I agree with you whole heartedly it doesn't look very good and I honestly felt safer before the add ons. Who do we contact about this situation?

Helicopter circling last night

Anyone know what was going on with the circling helicopter last night? This was aroun 10:45 just northwest of Milwaukee/Kimball. Lasted almost 30 minutes.

  • I heard over the scanner that the police ordered a helicopter to help search for a man involved in a homicide. I didn't know if they came out or not because I feel asleep. Am wondering if they ever found him.

New Condos in 3500 Block of Elston?

I am looking to buy a condo in Avondale area. These condo buildings (3501 to 3509) on the north side of Elston Ave look great. Only two buildings seem to be occupied. The other three are under construction right now. Do anyone have any ideas of when the new ones will be put for sale? Being right next to Elston ave, will it be a little bit noisy? I am new to the city, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • ht ...

Not too bad of noise. Keep in mind, ñ is across the street. They get a late night crowd on Tue, Wed, Fri Sat. That maybe fine now, but for resale it maybe a bit of a pain.

Are you working with a RE agent? I am a lifelong Chicagoan, and was born down the street on Artesian and Shubert. Also, as a real estate agent, I'd love to sit down and have coffee to give you a bit more insight of my firsthand knowledge. I will PM you.

  • Hi Zhisc. There is currently 1 unit available in the 3503 N Elston building. It is a 3 bed 2 bath listed for $260,000. Please give me a call if you would like to take a look at it. 773.370.6781 HT - you are thinking about the building at Elston and Rockwell. The buildings they are talking about is by Cheif O'Neils.

Beware of Neighborhood Thief

This woman is stealing from backyards in the area. Be on the lookout!

  • I live on Francisco and twice now when I have had the garage door open for a little bit I have had scrappers try to steal from my garage.

  • Yes, I will upgrade to a better camera/system in the spring. You basicly get $1 per line resolution. This is 600 line res and the system costs about $600 (not installed). There is no good comparison info on the net to inform on the quality. My next one will be 900 line.

Shred-a-thon?

Did anybody ever find the shredder at the Independence Park market this morning? Went over there 3 times, first from 9-10am, then back at 11, and again at noon. No shredder truck to be found. Anybody know of another shredder event coming up?

  • Io Octopus

It was bound to happen. Someone shredded the shredder.

  • Someone did post to the Facebook GIPNA group about the postponement - so a neighbor did have the smarts to use their smartphone (about 10:30).

It might be harder to update the Alderman's website from a smartphone, though posting here shouldn't have been a big deal.

Not the driver for speed camera ticket

Has anyone run into the issue where a speed camera ticket was sent to you for your car, but you weren't the driver? Is that therefore contestable, given the photo doesn't prove who was driving? I have 2 cars registered to me - one which I drive and one that my fiancee drives. He got the ticket, but it was sent to me as I'm the registered owner. While we're about to be married and have what's his be mine and vice versa :) , I don't feel that we should just blindly pay the ticket when there's no proof of the driver. Anyone else run into this before? How did you handle it?

Know of a good plumber?

Apparently, I have a small, leaky pipe in my basement. Does anyone know of a good, licensed plumber in the area that is reasonably priced?

  • spe

Kevin McDonough recently took care of a leaky kitchen sink for us.
He was courteous, prompt, worked quickly and kept our budget in mind (We have a number of other small projects we're trying to get done).

    Sound Plumbing
    773-306-9494
    soundplumbing@gmail.com

This person/company gets our highest recommendation!
    You won't regret calling him.

  • Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I'd called "Your Helpful Plumber" early yesterday before anyone had had a chance to respond. He was pretty good, but these are all great names to have in my back pocket in case a need to get quotes in the future.

Parking Violator

Is there a way to report a vehicle that doesn't have a city and permit sticker. The individuals have lived there for almost a year and somehow have gotten away with just using temporary / vistor passes. If they live in the city they should follow the rules and biy a city sticker and permit parking like everybody else on my street. What can I do?

  • ANGIE RESIDENT OF BELMONT GARDENS FOR 38 YRS.

well it seems that it is everyone else's business otherwise there would not be so many responses.
