Why I Support the Sauganash Sounds and You Should Too

Greetings my many neighbors!

I'm asking you to support the Sauganash Sounds with a financial donation to this very important community newspaper. I am again making a donation this year. Donations can be mailed to Sounds Donation Drive, ATTN: Julie Gay, 22 Alice Lane, Lake Barrington, IL 60010.

Supporting the Sounds with a donation is important. As a longtime self-professed "community guy", the Sounds provides localized information on what is going on in a whole bunch of NW neighborhoods. The information is often tailored exactly to a specific community. The newspaper is responsive to the civics in our area and talks about individual neighbors. All of this would already be worth my and your donation.

But what is most important to me as a community guy, is with the Sounds we increase our ability to build community and do democracy. Building community starts with being informed but moves towards getting involved. I read the Sounds seeing that all of the events and activities listed invite you and me to get involved with other citizens. When done right, whether or not successful, along the way community is built. "We are better together" is one of my many sayings.

The Sounds also allows us to do democracy. Democracy belongs to the people, not the political parties, government or even elected officials. Like community, democracy requires citizens who are informed, connected with one another, understand the common challenges they face and determined to solve those challenges. No citizen stands alone so the massing of more citizens around an issue is required to solve challenges. The Sounds provides an open platform for a variety of voices to be heard in the democratic arena whether those are for or against.

Thank you Sounds for information, introducing us to each other, letting us know what's going on, building community and doing democracy. All of this more than merits my donation once again this year. I ask you to do the same.

Good morning Bob. They started out local in the homes of neighbors. As time passed on and one of the founders moved out that way the mailing address went with her but the other folks are still here. This is a grassroots paper that relies on volunteers and a small local staff. We've got nothing else like this. I ask you to support it with a donation.

I'd rather support someone local than support someone who moved far away.

    Shop local.

I unfortunately am one of those homeless people who live under that bridge. I mean no harm to anyone especially the people who reside there on Kedzie and on sawyer. I would like to tell anyone who is interested that we do not want to be there anymore that you want us there. We mean no harm and we try to respect the community and all the people who pass through on a daily basis. Don't be scared of us. Try to keep an open mind. Notice that when you do pass through that we try very hard to keep it as clean as we can, we usually don't speak unless spoken to, and we never ask for anything. Some of deal with mental illness others have drug and alcohol problems but there are some of us who are very down on our luck with no family or place to go. If anyone would just reach out and ask they would know that we are harmless and we are just as afraid as you are remember we are there all night. We are alone we are treated as if we are not human and sometimes invisible as if this is what we really want sometimes people think the answer is as simple as getting a job which is a real challenge when you cannot keep your hygiene up, get proper rest and have no way to get back and forth imagine how frightening it is to go out all day and look for a job come back and find that the little bit you own has been discarded by the city. For just a minute put yourself in our shoes and maybe do for us what you would want someone to do for you if you were in our position. It absolutely is not as easy as it sounds.

  • Shelters turn away people DAILY. Homeless get in line for access hours before opening because they know first-come-first-served. There are no reservations for a shelter bed.

I'm probably the only person here including the person who wrote this post who's actually been homeless. I've been the child pushing a shopping cart, slept in my van with my children, and had to rely on the kindness of the church and few family so miss me with your pretentious attitude. If any homeless person walks into any church on a Sunday and tells someone they want to take a shower there is no way they will be turned away. It's sacrileligios. Also anywhere there is a pool there is a shower, once again I have done that too. In between not having an available shower you get yourself some baby wipes and keep up your appearance in between showers. Homeless people don't just come from nowhere, they were birthed and entered this world just like everyone else, they know someone. And living in a city that closes 50 schools, 6 mental care facilities and is so corrupt it is fighting every step of the way to pay people a somewhat live able wage, you have to look out for your own welfare. If you have access to a commuter and are savy enough to write this post, you can simply google "where to take a shower when you're homeless".

viaduct

Now that the weather is getting so very cold will the city do something about the homeless community living under the bridge at Belmont and Kedzie? I am just curious the city comes and periodically removes their belongings will they still do that during the winter monthes?

  • I'm not positive that this is the case but I read Teresa's comment/question as more of a concern for the homeless not that she is wanting the police to remove their belongings.

  • Carter O'Brien lager beer rioter

Well, I was just there. And while I do not hate on any of these folks, their gauntlet of junk encroaching on the public way is impossible to understate. Nobody gets to claim the sidewalk for their own use AFAIC. And for the record, their ties to drug running and gangs are well known.

The Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition has been invited once again to be on our region's premiere community news show - Chicago Tonight. FAiR will appear live on Wednesday, December 19 at 7pm on Channel 11 (PBS).

More information about FAiR can be found at www.fairchicago.org. We are also on Facebook and Twitter.

I invite you to join FAiR! We are the leading voice for residents in both the city and suburbs impacted by the October 2013 changes made to the O'Hare runway takeoff and landing patterns. Those changes were made without any real community input.

In addition, FAiR now includes Midway airport. Changes were made there in February 2014. Not surprsingly, these changes were made without any real community input.

We seek a real seat at the airport decision making table in order to find solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution over our communities, again done without any real community input.

Questions? Please ask. jac.charlier@gmail.com

See you in TV Land :)

Police Activity (shooting?) at Waveland & Troy

Police have blocked Waveland between Troy & Albany and there are evidence lights shining on the street which is not uncommon when there are shootings and they are looking for shell casings. Anyone heard what happened?

  • Deb informed her ward via her newsletter, and maybe even on here, that there was filming happening there with prop weapons. There were police on site as there is with most filming and to make sure there weren't any problems or concerns with residents.

Stolen Car - White Honda Civic Hatchback license number V68-0594

My car was gone from the front of my house on Albany Ave. near Belmont this morning, and has not been reported as towed.
It is a white honda civic hatchback with a small hole in the front bumper, license plate Illinois # V68-0594.
If you have any information please let me know.

  • Thanks guys, my husband's car has actually been stolen twice, so we are very familiar with all the facts and things that we need to do. That being said, I'm simply asking everyone in the avondale area to keep their eyes peeled for a car that looks like mine - sometimes social media is more reliable than the police ;)

  • I guess you guys have been around the block with this before, I pray you get it back. Good luck!
