Gang Activity, Violence and Drug Dealing 2800-2900 Block of Hamlin Avenue

It seems like gang bangers and drug dealers have moved into a house or apartment in this area over the last three months. It seems like gang bangers and drug dealers have moved into a house or apartment in this area over the last three months. A very large group just hangs out, usually after 6pm until like midnight in front of a fire hydrant, just hanging out on their porch selling drugs and getting really, really drunk and loud. They also are down by Hamlin and George and walk back and forth to seemingly avoid the police. Does anyone know about this and whether the police are doing something about it? It is really bad. Heard three gunshots last night and my kids are scared to go outside with them there. I have called the police but they usually don't respond and it just seems to be getting worse. Suggestions?

  • Juan C. Ayala Belmont Cragin Resident

I would contact the alderman and ask to speak to a commander at your district police station

  • I'm sorry. That sucks beyond belief. When you call the police tell them you saw a drug deal happening. Call every 20 minutes if cops don't show up. If you can get your neighbors involved that might help. I don't know why we need to live in fear of these dirtbags.

  • Were you able to get ahold of the alderman or police commander? I live down the street, I have not witnessed any of this but am not surprised. I've seen the tennis shoes hanging from the wires at George. Let me know if you need any help.

Glass Block Window Replacement?

Just asking for some knowledge: how much would replacing one glass block window cost? And who would I hire to do it? A mason? Any recommendations?

  • Liz H. Small business owner

I used Magic Glass Block company (5045 W. Diversey) to install seven entire glass block windows a few years ago and they did an outstanding job for what I thought was a really reasonable price. The owner sounds a bit gruff but he's actually a really nice guy.

  • A&K

Single glass block, sorry. I just checked out the photo. Materials should run about $20 or so. Good luck.

Doctor Recommendation - looking for a DO

Does anyone have a great Primary Care Physician who is a DO? Also looking for an affordable OBGYN (not for pregnancy purposes, and can be a Nurse Practitioner). Thanks!

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

If you are looking for a DO, who is a family practioner (no need for a separate gynocologist), see Dr. McDermott. She's more business-like than warm/fuzzy, but she is an excellent doctor. http://swedishcovenant.org/details/ann-mcdermott-d-o-

  • Raed Mansour 25-year resident of Chicago living in Irving Park.

Dr. Jay Bhatt at Erie Health on Foster and California by Swedish is a great D.O. He's an internist so a bit more training than a family practitioner. He's got the best bedside manners ever. He's funny too.

  • I can recommend Dr Megan Pence DO who is in practice at Advocate Ravenswood Family Practice. She is a resident in her second or third year, however, and will likely move on to another practice when her residency is finished.

He also was driving on an expired license. He's also had a previous DUI in 1995, and has been caught driving on a suspended license. He's also stated there is no need to apologize to his constituents over this.

  • I saw that. Unreal. Laughing but seriously. It's ridonkulous. 🙈🙉🙊

White Cargo Van w/Plate 937 in it - just smashed into a car at 2830 N. Hamlin Ave

This is out of control. I just posted about issues going on on this block and this just happened. The police and the alderman need to do something about this NOW. We are having a yard sale and some Latino male just pulled up and did this to a white Chrysler 300 parked by the hydrant in front of this house on purpose. Guessing it has to do with the gang members hanging out here. This never happened in the five years that we have lived here.

  • Did you call 911?

  • Anton Irie 3 Years And Still Unsure About LS

get the exact address, call the alderman and report the house(s) as drug houses. get them put on police watch lists, etc ... if they are out there obviously dealing you need to call that in.

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

In addition to calling 911 and getting your neighbors to do the same - for everything that seems suspicious - go to your next beat meeting. There may already be people working together to get this place shut down and if not, you can speak to your CAPS officers and...

In addition to calling 911 and getting your neighbors to do the same - for everything that seems suspicious - go to your next beat meeting. There may already be people working together to get this place shut down and if not, you can speak to your CAPS officers and neighbors in person about the issue.
Our area has been dealing with some "problem residents" and one problem house in particular for several years. As annoying as it is, the police can't just go in and start arresting people. They need to be able to prove the house is a problem before it gets put on any lists or gets any of the already fairly scarce resources devoted to it. The first step is for the police to show "calls for service" to the address. 911 calls, about this house in particular, have to be numerous enough to stand out. To get this done, you really need to hook up with your neighbors. Try an email list - as soon as one person calls 911, send out a note, have everyone else call too.

Our foster dog escaped our yard today around 5:05 pm near Bernard & Berteau. He's a white irish setter. Currently around 40 lbs and very underweight. Super friendly. Goofy lil guy, about 12 months. He has a red collar and a white tick collar.

If you see him, grab him for us please!!! 773.706.7442

Something new coming to the Zacatecas spot?

I was walking by the old Zacatecas spot on Sunday and noticed that there was some demolition going on inside. The counter and paintings on the wall were ripped out. Yesterday, all of the windows were covered with paper.

I am curious about what might be going in. Hopefully another affordable restaurant or maybe a Trader Joe's?

The lot gets plowed in the winter and it is super easy in and easy out. if you are interested please message me. The cost is $75 per month... but if you sign up for several months we may be able to negotiate.

Speed Cameras by Lane Tech

I was traveling on Western Ave yesterday and noticed the speed cameras in front of Lane Tech High School (Western and Addison) flashing like crazy! The speed limit is 20 mph while school is in session (Monday - Friday til 4pm). 5 over the limit is a $35 ticket, over 10 can be up to $100. Just a friendly reminder!

  • Michele, if you live the city then I'd talk to the Alderman's office and ask them exactly how the state law about children being present when the violation occured is interpreted ? If I were you, I'd write my experience to the newspapers.

@Michele, sorry to hear you lost your case but as I've said above that should be expected. These rent a judges really don't seem to understand the law. In my opinion, since the city is claiming that you violated the law, it is their burden to prove that you were in fact driving the vehicle at the time (which you don't have to admit to because of the 5th amendment) and it is also their burden to prove that the person on the bike is a minor. Since it appears that you already admitted to being the driver at the time, the city still has to prove that the person on the bike is a minor. I would have to believe that this is impossible without an actual witness.

You now have two choices, pay the city their fine or appeal the decision to Cook County. I don't blame you for just paying the fine because as I stated above, it will cost you $310 to file the appeal while the ticket is $100. Of course if you win, not only will you get your $310 back (paid to you by the city) you won't have to pay the fine either.

I am going to appeal all of my tickets that are not dismissed by the city from now on because I don't like bullies. My pretrial for one is in August. I also have a hearing with the city on two other tickets next week, one is a speeding camera ticket and the other a red light camera ticket. I have proof for both that I couldn't have been the driver because I have my CTA Ventra transaction record showing I was on the train at the time in question. If the idiot rent a judge next week doesn't dismiss these two, I will be filing two more appeals which they will lose.

2 loose dogs- not friendly

I was taking out trash when a white and tan pit (not a mix) and a smaller shepherd/terrier mix (black and tan) barked and charged at me. I got inside my gate in time, but they kept barking at me with their heads through the openings in the gate. Is someone missing them? This was on Albany near School street. Please be careful when out walking.

  • I would call Animal control and not be super quick to say aggressive. That's their open license to shoot, you aren't sure they were aggressive and even if they are, the police may identify someone's pet by accident and shoot them.

  • Charging dogs _are_ aggressive. What if this was a child walking by?

Private Drain Program

Anyone have experience with the city's private drain program? We have a city sewer backing up into our place, and video showing where it's coming from. The city tells us we need to a plumber registered with the program, and also that that information is private. They've already shot down two licensed plumbers, anyone with experience on how to break through this runaround?

I'd be curious to know how this turned out for the original poster. I just had someone (a plumber/sewer guy) out to inspect and rod my line to the street, and we found collapsed tile under the grass in the parkway. Now we have to call the city, arrange for a city guy to come and witness the sewer guy do another camera inspection. It's not like the sewer guy is coming out for free for the second, city-witnessed, inspection, either, so I get to pay him twice!. How stupid is that? One would think that video or camera-still shots would be adequate proof to the city of a problem. Obviously, they'll either find the break when they dig, or they won't. If there's no break, there should THEN be a process for the city to recoup their wasted time/efforts, not this double-inspection process. It's a racket!

Barbs- that is exactly what we were told as well. We actually never got this issue resolved because we couldn't find an approved plumber willing to work with the city. The ones who have experience with this avoid it like the plague because they found their past experiences working with the city too frustrating and want to stay of their radar and the ones who did agree to work with us ended up not having all the necessary licenses the city requires (both plumbing and sewer). I contacted about 10 different companies before it got too frustrating and gave up. A lot of wasted time and energy and we are exactly where we started. All we have to show for it is video that the city will not look at. I hope you have better luck and if you happen to figure out how to navigate all of this please let me know!

Question regarding early morning garbage pick up.

This morning, at 4:45 a.m. on W. Berteau Ave. between Ridgeway and Lawndale, we were woken up by a private residential garbage pick up service truck (not City service). The truck was parked in the middle of the street. The collectors dragged the commercial size garbage bin from the alley behind an apartment building (making a whole lot of noise), and proceeded to attach it to the truck and empty it. I think this took a few attempts. So, my question is really two fold: 1) Are private garbage services allowed to pick up that early in the morning?; 2) Are they allowed to do this in the middle of the street vs. the alley?

  • There is usually a company name and phone number on the side of the truck. I would contact the owner/manager of the building that uses the dumpster as well. And don't the new wards come into effect in 2015?

  • Chris pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

You'd think that, but they actually began the transfer over a year ago. It's a mess.

Old Alderman won't really service you anymore, cause they don't get your vote. New alderman barely service you, cause you aren't "officially" in their ward yet, but they kinda want your vote.

I was told on two different situations on ward transfers from Mell to Colon, and Mell to Arena, start using new alderman, a year ago, by all aldermen involved.

Found a bike

I usually just find garbage in my front yard -- one time I found a mug of soup with the spoon still in it. But yesterday, I found a boys' bike in kind of rough shape. It didn't belong to any of my immediate neighbors. I live near Irving and Whipple. If someone is missing an older boys' bike and can provide the correct identifying details, I'll make sure it gets back to you.

  • Adam preeozniak Avondale resident

Any chance it's a gold fixed gear bike. Black rims. Stickers in it? I had a bike stolen recently in the area.

  • IB

Adam, no - it's a kids bike. I'm sorry about your bike, though. What a bummer.
