Single Family Home Cleaning

I own a single family home in north avondale/south irving park. I'm looking for any referrals of cleaning services that do a good job and are cost effective. I would be looking for thorough cleaning of 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, office as well as living/dining room. Included in that would be some substantial cleaning of a tub, hardwood floors & windows...all which haven't been cleaned in some time so I know they'll need some elbow grease. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Speed Cameras by Lane Tech

I was traveling on Western Ave yesterday and noticed the speed cameras in front of Lane Tech High School (Western and Addison) flashing like crazy! The speed limit is 20 mph while school is in session (Monday - Friday til 4pm). 5 over the limit is a $35 ticket, over 10 can be up to $100. Just a friendly reminder!

I got two tickets in one night. They popped up near Irv/Cali.
Once I realized what happened, I turned around and looked for the cams. They are white and tucked between the trees (real smart). And the signs are garbage.

I received one warning and one $100 ticket. It was after dark, and I was going to contest because I thought parks are closed at sunset, but that's the CC forest preserve I was thinking of.

To those who got a ticket - I did contest it.
So far I haven't heard back (it's been just over a week), but upon reviewing the footage and pics, there is no actual speed limit listed on the pictures as a point of reference as to if I was <10 over or >10 over. On a hand written ticket, the speed limit must be marked on the citation along with traveling speed and amount over.

I will see if anything comes back one way or another. I have never contested a ticket before, via mail.

I now have two license plate countermeasures that I may be testing soon. Doing a 6mph over run through cam, then waiting two weeks to see if I got a $35 ticket. If I get nothing in the mail, we the people have won :)

Good luck, drive safely regardless. The city needs to pay for tons of park renovations this year, so why not use park zone speeding tickets....

  • EEH

Tom G - the 20 MPH regulation is for cameras in school zones when children are present only, and posted speed limit when children are not present or after 4pm. The park camera zones are for the posted speed limit (30 MPH on Irving). Hope that helps!

Yard waste

Hi, I am planning on taking down some rather large shrubs. Is it the expectation of the city that the debris will need to be broken down and placed in the brown paper bags or will the take the entire shrub, about the size of a Christmas tree.

Also, I am in need of a landscaper, suggestions appreciated.

  • Thanks Synocrat. In the past I have cut them as close to the ground as I can, and I even tried covering the stumps with black plastic to prevent re-sprouting, but somehow they always put up new shoots. I will try the herbicide on the fresh cuts. I hope that does it.

  • Yeah, those "weed" trees are very tenacious... I've even tried using a salt paste before to try and stop Mulberry, Box Elder, and Hornbeam because I'm adverse to using chemicals, but it just wasn't nearly as effective compared to an herbicide. I used to volunteer in Lake County Forest Preserve cutting down Buckthorn to clear the understory for native plants, and the sprayed herbicide after cutting was the most effective thing I've come across.

So they come along Monday morning, work the day and then take all the signs downs. Guess what happens next? Yep, people pull in,park and unless they walk all the way to the end of the block they won't see the lone city no parking sign. Thankfully I wasn't parked there but there were several people who got ripped off thanks to the City and People Gas!

I probably should have posted this under the Crime heading.

Hi Everyone,

This past Friday afternoon around 5:00PM I was driving down the 3700 block of N. Troy. This block is a little narrow. The Ice Cream Truck was to the right parked at the end toward Waveland. My minivan could not make it past the truck and as with school buses it is really not a good idea to go around, because kids being kids could run out in front of the truck and you have a blind spot on the right front in some vehicles. I waited patiently.

I few minutes later a big SUV turned the corner from Grace onto Troy. I saw it stop at the corner-I thought good-go around. But instead they came up to my bumper and laid on the horn. I stuck my head out the window and said,"I can't go around I can't fit." At this point I am thinking-why do you think I am sitting here? Just because? Then 10-15 more kids poured out of houses and started walking to the truck. In my experience on this block of Troy-there are a lot of kids and these kids never seem to understand that they have to walk on the sidewalk. What did my friend in the SUV do? Laid on his horn some more. Which prompted the ice cream truck to move. Which of course prompted the kids who had no adults with them to RUN after it, in the street. I refused to move until all of the kids were safe and I yelled at them out of my window to get on the sidewalk-something I have done on this block of Troy many times before. As he still layed on the horn I finally started creeping towards Waveland.

Where was the SUV going? To Addison. Really dude? When you saw this happening, back at Grace why turn on Troy? Go around to Kedzie.

Please everyone it has been a long winter. Kids have been cooped up. Some parents have not been good about telling their kids to not walk in the streets. You can wait a few minutes. Thanks!

Roses are dead?

Hi all,

I did a fair amount of yard work last week. During which time I inspected my rose bush: black no sign if life in the cambium layer (I think). Anybody else have a young rose not survive the winter?
This is my first rose bush, so any advice from veterans appreciated.

  • One way to check is to scrap a small area with your finger nail. If the area where you scraped is green, the plant is still alive. Do it closer to the base, rather than near the top. I've done this for several plants, not just roses. I have four rose bushes, two of them have the smallest buds on them, two others are still dormant.I'm not worried yet. This was a hard winter so give them some time to wake up.

  • B sighthound, Avondale/LoganS 3years, Beat 2524

Thanks all, I guess I will wait another week or 2.

New Coffee Place & Bakery! (Sugar Hills Bakery)

Sugar Hills Chicago has opened at 3235 W. Addison over by the Chipotle. My husband & I stopped in & tried some sweets and they where very good & the coffee was AMAZING! The owners are very nice to boot. The neighborhood was missing a place like this since I moved to Addison and Kimball back in 2009. I am very glad they are here!

  • Great cookies and clean space and super friendly staff.

  • Lovely spot, no breads but breakfast sandwiches are yummy & I love the Mango Cake & the Strawberry Shortcake. Can't wait to try the liquor cake! :)

House Cleaners

Looking for some recommendations on someone to clean my apartment regularly. I am not sure what the correct term these days, if it is housekeeper, maid service, etc. But hopefully you all get the point and don't think I am some crazy person.

Live on the corner of Belmont and Pulaski, so anybody who has recommendations of a company that will send somebody around that area, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

This might be a bit of a long shot but i have to try it. I'm looking for a small apartment or room for my sister. She has two sweet long-haired dachshunds and we are having quite a time finding a place that will rent to a person with two dogs. She can pay up to $500 a month (maybe some wiggle room there too). She takes very good care of the dogs and they are quiet and tame. My Sister is developmentally disabled (but high functioning), she has a heart of gold and loves to help people and animals. She would make a great companion for someone that could use a regular visitor or need help with household chores. She works 20-25 hours a week. She smokes but only outdoors. If you or someone you know has a room, garden apartment, coach house, etc that could work for her, please let me know.

Lost dog

I lost my dog. She is a little terrier mix, kind of looks like a whippet. She is very dark brown, almost black, with a white spot on her nose, bib, and paws.

Last seen at Walgreens on Milwaukee and Pulaski running to the Shell on Belmont and Milwaukee.

She got out of her harness, so she has no tags, but she is microchipped

Please call us at 773-251-6757 or bring her to the nearest vet.

  • We found her! Thanks to the people who saw her and took her in. She had walked home from Walgreens and a couple saw her and took her to keep her safe.

  • Was she tied up and left alone outside the store while you went inside to shop? I hate seeing dogs left like this and don't understand why any dog owner would do this.

Zoning 'expert' - Special Use of Land

Hi neighbors!
I have an issue with the zoning, section 17. I have to fill up some forms and a plot plan. I'm looking for a person with zoning knowledge especially with the plot plan. I already went to the zoning office (city hall), but they only review the documents before I submit them.

Do you know any zoning 'expert'?
Thank you!

  • Steven Vance Urban planner

What are you doing? Are you petitioning for a zoning change? There are many zoning experts in Chicago – many of whom are lawyers – and you can find them if you search for "architects" and "permit expeditors".

Does anyone know what is being built at the corner of Pulaski and Montrose? If I were a betting man, I would say another flippin bank.

Seagulls?

Hi all, I was away most of last week. This past weekend while I was cleaning up the yard, I noticed 4 Seagulls both days. I am a little north of Koz.

Has anyone else noticed presence of gulls in the neighborhood?
Is there a new food source for them?

  • Gulls have been around for awhile in my neck of the woods, I think they are scavengers,
Close your eyes and listen to the gulls, you'll think your by the ocean!

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

I work near belmont/elston. There are a ton of them.

  • Derek In Avondale since 2009

They're absolutely scavengers. If there's any amount of trash or open garbage cans they will find them.
