Gun shots at Grace & Whipple?

Did anyone just hear gun shots at Grace and Whipple? I called police to report. This isn't the first time we have heard them from that area. Just curious....

  • I recall hearing what I thought were fireworks nearby at that time. The cracks were very rapid and sounded overlapping which made me think fireworks. Now I am wondering and glad you called. Did you see police nearby after you placed the emergency call? Regardless, who raises the idiots who do this?

  • just found out it was gun shots. Police found shell casings. Happened in the alley between Albany and Whipple.

My husband and I have lived in Irving Park (or Albany Park by Everyblock map...) for the last 6 years, basically at Kedzie and Berteau. Love the neighborhood, finally ready to buy and we are quickly being priced out of our preferred "West" Horner Park location. I figured we will end up north (not Manor north but those outskirts) or northwest of where we are currently - BUT - we started looking at places in SE Irving Park, specifically the block(s) of Irving to Addison and California to Kedzie.

It's silly to say I am completely unfamiliar with an area about 4-5 blocks from where we currently live, but I really am. I noticed that there have been 3 home invasions/burglaries in that area over the last month - is it a safe area? I walk my dog at all hours so I'm always out and about - are other neighbors? I walked the area last weekend and it seemed so quiet where I'm use to people milling about, kids playing on the sidewalks...lots of activity.

I have lived in various neighborhoods of Chicago for the last 15 years, so I am well aware of the crime, the fact that we live in an urban area, keep your eyes and ears open and all that. But I would love to know how people more familiar with the area would describe living there - the good, bad and the ugly:) Appreciate the feedback!

  • Aaron R. 14 years in Chicago, recent import to Irving Park.

We've been at Whipple and Grace for almost five years now (guess maybe it's time to change my bio line) and I'd like to second the good things people have said about the neighborhood. Lots of families, and folks are generally friendly. I definitely don't think there's too much of a difference north or south of IP road one way or the other.

  • I didn't know inner city was an offensive term to people. I have been in Irving Park for 15 years, it was a different neighborhood then, so for urban dictionary/wikipedia definition? Yes Irving Park is inner city.

Back on topic Blythe love to have you here! We are cleaning up California Park tomorrow, if you want to come out and meet potential neighbors. We meet in the McFetridge Sports Complex Parking lot at 10AM.

Car theft 2700 block of Wellington Ave

My vehicle had been broken into twice in the last month around the intersection of Wellington and Washenaw. If anyone has seen anything feel free to message me. I didn't know people still stole car radios? The intersection must have a worm hole to 1992.....

  • I had a radio and speakers stolen from my car when I was 16. I'm 40 now. I think you have something with the wormhole theory. Sorry to hear about your car though.

hey another thing i forgot to mention.....the night our cat came back it had snowed a little. I tracked the fresh prints back a few doors down to across our alley side, to a gut-rehab that was in the works. It looks like our cat was hanging out there, as it was totally open, and I'm sure a crazy good time for the cat.

Was thinking if there are any of these construction projects going on in your area, see if you can gain access to them and see if you can find your cat there.

    once again, best of luck.

  • Thanks. There is a construction site near us, but there was loud machinery in use all weekend. I would have thought that would have scared him off. I'll check it out anyway.

Pet Supplies Plus offering FREE Microchips

Went to the store on Elston yesterday and at checkout, if you spend $10 or more they offer you a voucher for a free microchip at their upcoming vaccine clinic this month. Microchips drastically increase the likelihood of your lost pet being returned to you. Cats especially benefit from them because so few are returned to their owners as it is.

Microchips are usually $15 to $25 at a vet, so this is a pretty good deal!

  • Just had an ordeal with a dog I found and was caring for/dealing with taking to CACC, had no microchip. The good news is his owners cared and went to CACC to claim him late last night, but get these microchips!!!!

Hello, we are looking to launch a free newspaper focused on cultural, political and economic life in Logan Square & Avondale. If our first edition does well, we would like to do this on a monthly basis. We are looking for someone to write a brief article on the growth of freelance work in general, and in Logan Square / Avondale in particular. Even though our start-up costs are high and revenue is Zero, we would like to offer compensation. Let us know what you think a fair price for a brief article is and hopefully we can have a meeting of the minds. And as an inspiring writer, you would get your name out there and fatten up your resume. If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to e-mail (jraider@raiderrealtychicago.com) us anytime. If you could include a sample of your writing and a resume, that would be great. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

  • Larry Garrett editor of West Logan Square/Avondale Newsletter

Yes, I'm afraid there is. Not the biggest publication but has been coming out once a month since 1994 and is called The West Logan Square/Avondale Newsletter.

  • Jason Raider Owner & Managing Broker of Raider Realty

Fuarain, the West Logan Square / Avondale Newsletter is a great publication, and the publisher is a good guy who genuinely cares for the neighborhood. So, rather than look at other publications as competition, we think it's great to have multiple voices in the neighborhood. Although this may seem counter-intuitive if you go down to a busy strip of restaurants, bars, etc. rather than take away from each other, they create a synergy that draws more people to the area. We hope that the same dynamics holds true for newspapers.

Joe, I'm tired of arguing about this. It isn't what EveryBlock is for, but if you keep posting things like this, I am going to keep posting back.

Your source is a libertarian journal. It is biased. Baby sitters make more than $10 an hour, your examples are curious. Again, nobody is taking your money. Is someone asking you to take a pay cut? It is common sense for conservative CEO's and other people who like to conserve their money, but not to the majority of Americans. You and I both know that there is a widening gap between the rich and the poor.
Also, I don't know what politicians this is helping, that statement is just confusing to me. Just look at Illinois, we have a billionaire governor and a very millionaire mayor who are both very adept at helping themselves out.

In the not to distant pass,I moved back to Chicago, and took a huge pay cut to work at a major institution that most Chicagoan's and beyond love. People were jealous of my job when I told them what it was. It was a very specialized job that requires a lot of experience. Unfortunately, although this place kept hiring more middle managers, It paid people like me, who handled all their assets, not much more than I could have made an entry level retail job. They had the money, they just didn't want to share it. When other cities, and Rahm started talking about raising the minimum wage, miraculously, this institution found some money and started paying people in that position closer to the national average. I have moved on, but now my former co-workers have money to buy things and are looking to buy houses and ect. Nobody got hurt and now there is more money being spread around.

New Pub in Avondale (3624 W. Belmont)

Looks like they are opening a new pub at 3624 W. Belmont (it was a bar for a while and then closed). The signage reads "The Avondale" and looks nice - like one of the Lakeview/Lincoln Park neighborhood joints.

My sister, neighbor, and I went there Sunday morning and really enjoyed our big brunch. The french toast and eggs benedict were fabulous. I'm looking forward to seeing what their lunch and dinner menus will have to offer.

My husband and I are looking to rent a garage space close to the Avondale area. Is anyone renting theirs?

  • We might have a spot. What area are you looking at? What sort of price were you expecting and when would the car be there?

  • We are looking for somewhere close to Albany & School, and we obviously would like to pay as little as possible, so throw out a price that we can consider! We want the garage for storage as well as parking, so we will need to have access 24/7.

Feeding pigeons

Anyone else have issues walking through a sea of pigeons (on your way to the train, let's say) that someone left food out for? What can I do to stop this? I never actually see the person putting out food there (under the Metra tracks on Addison at Avondale) but there are signs all over saying to not feed the pigeons yet there is brwad out there daily. Its pretty bad somedays...just wondering what, if anything, I can do. Thanks!

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

sadly, I don't think you can reason with the people who insist on feeding the birds (and with bread! that's not what they're supposed to eat!). It seems like they're almost always elderly, and often mentally ill or have dementia - the late Lincoln Square pigeon man comes to mind.

  • Some years ago, the neighbors who lived behind me used to dump their leftovers in the alley. They did it so regularly that there were grease stains on the asphalt. They weren't elderly or mentally ill, just foreigners. I called 311 and reported them, and they stopped.

Rather than confronting the people who are doing this, I would carry disposable gloves and trash bags, pick up the bread and dispose of it. Not much you can do about bird seed unless you're willing to haul around a dustbuster.

Why is the city cutting down all the parkway trees?

Does anyone eknow and is anyone else alarmed about it? It's really upsetting me. I have lived on the north side all my life and never ever have I seen so many parkway trees cut down in a season for no apparent reason. Our onc3e beautiful, tree lined shaded streets are now dotted with stump after stump after stump. Who can I call? Is there a tree disease rampant that the city isn't telling us about? It's getting so I am afraid to go to work for fear of coming home and seeing sad stumps in place of beautiful parkway trees. Is this Rahm's doing? The alderman? Who?

The bane of my existence was15-year-old English Ivy in a 50 x 15' yard. I tried to dab herbicides on the leaves with a paintbrush but had very limited success. I ended up getting a mattock and started ripping out the ivy as best I could. Then, I bought several rolls of black landscaping plastic from Menard's and covered the entire area. I used yard Staples and rocks and bricks that I had laying in the yard to hold it down. It may take up to 8 weeks for the black tarp to completely kill off the roots by baking them and starving the plants from sun and water but it will be worth it. After that, you should be free to seed the lawn and have to deal with the occasional weed.
