Feral/Alley Cat Colony

The biggest issue is that they come into our yards and gardens and defecate everywhere and then we have to clean it up. I have an indoor cat, but outdoor cat feces can be harmful if touched.

And my neighbor can't get them out of his garage. He is now on his third momma kitty with a litter that has crawled through the side and camped out far under a utility bench. He feels bad of course and doesn't want to harm them so he just lives with is, but again cat poop everywhere.

It is hard to know if these are someone's pets or not. I heard that PAWS has a trap/spray and release program but what if these are really pets? I guess if they are and the owner let's them roam then it's fair game? I have noticed more alley cats on blocks on Troy and Whipple too. Anybody else having this issue?

I host a feral cat colony in my backyard (4 cats) through the Treehouse Humane Society's "Cats at Work" program. They are spayed/neutered and vaccinated, also microchipped. They are feral, and will not come near people. I have small shelters in my yard for them, and I feed and water them every day.

The Cats at Work Program is a very successful, natural rat abatement program. I had a worsening rat problem, every day rats ran through my yard. Now with the cats -- no rats. It is such a blessing.

Treehouse Humane Society also has a TNR Program (trap, neuter and return). If you contact them, they can help with the excessive feral cat population in your neighborhood. I tell you, though, I would rather have cats hanging around than rats, any day.

  • I used to trap for Treehouse -- get in touch with them. Sometimes they have volunteers that can go into areas that have serious feral cat problems and help get the colony under control. If you're willing, you could also work with Treehouse to start trapping yourself. If there are...

I used to trap for Treehouse -- get in touch with them. Sometimes they have volunteers that can go into areas that have serious feral cat problems and help get the colony under control. If you're willing, you could also work with Treehouse to start trapping yourself. If there are people in the area already feeding the cats, you won't have to feed them as well.

It really helped me straddle that line between the neighbors that wanted to feed all of the cats and the ones that wanted them all dead. In the end, our neighborhood colony dropped a bit in size, stabilized, and kept the rat population in check as well. Plus no more fighting/kittens once they were all spayed/neutered.

    Good luck!

CNC Machinist Openings?

Can anyone recommend any businesses or machine shops looking for CNC operators? My boyfriend is new to town with over 6 years experience at large corporations such as Caterpillar as a CNC machinist and looking for something new that hires in at over minimum wage and isn't past the airport. Any recommendations or experiences/tips any else has for looking for a position as such?

Did anyone hear an explosion/loud crash?

Near Kimball/Belmont area. Just heard crazy loud crashing noise.

  • Yes! It sounded like a bazooka. Around 9:00 pm last night. I heard an ambulance not long after. I have no idea what that was

  • I heard a loud boom around the time you mentioned. I assumed it was a firework.

  • My neighbors and I definitely agreed it was more than a firework... I called 311 but they didn't know anything about it. So weird!

Pardon my crappy photography skills. Found by my neighbor Keith and his wife (303) 906-2744. Give him a call, get your dog back and have a great weekend.

  • You could also take the pooch to any reputable vet for a chip check.

  • check the homes on 2800 block of Diversey just East of Whipple, 3 or 4th house, that's where I saw a similar looking dog. Good luck

Job boards or apps for the area?

I'm not sure if this is breaking any rules of Every Block but I was wondering if anyone knows of a good website to see jobs in just our area besides Craigslist? It's been a while since I've had to look for a new one and I'm have trouble with it. I'm open to anything so if anyone knows of any little places I might be missing as well in the Avondale and surrounding areas (I have clerical, retail and manager experience.) I would be forever grateful!

You can also go directly to any large company's websites, like Macy's, Target, Starbuck's, Whole Foods, etc. and check out their career pages. I mention some of those partly because it's the time of year when some of them are looking for seasonal positions which might, no guarantees, but might, turn into permanent ones after the holidays. Whole Foods will be opening several stores in the next few months.

Avoid simplyhired.com. They don't update their lists in a timely manner.

Tom G, the things I am looking into are receptionist positions within an office setting or for a veterinary clinic or medical. (I am taking the medical route in school and have animal experience as well as clerical.) Anything with retail too, I do have manager experience. I have tried Indeed, I like that one the best. Monster, careerbuilder etc have all just given me headaches with emails for job openings that don't apply to me even after I have the settings changed. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

Rusty and Sediment Water

Over the past several years I have noticed that our water is rusty. If we don't use a toilet in our house for several days, it leaves rust marks and/or blackish sediment. I also noticed this at our office over in North Center. Over the weekends, it gets black sediment. Anyone else have this issue? At our house we replaced the water pipe from the street 14 years ago, so I would say that this is a city problem.

  • I think it was this past summer because a friend of mine moved here from Texas and I told him not to go into the water.

I, too, used Rob West and was OK with his work, until 1) a skilled tradesman whose opinion on such matters I respect very much, told me about a very unethical thing that Rob West did on a job he was working on (in the past, I know, but still), and 2) the bathroom vent pipe he worked on for one of my properties was not done properly, necessitating another plumber to do the job correctly.

I recommend Richard Adorno, of Plumbing by Richard, 773-828-7337. A friend of mine who owns a couple of properties has had work done by him is very pleased by not only his work, but by his prices and time spent on the job. He also does electrical, carpentry, drywall, and painting. Free estimates!

White Cargo Van w/Plate 937 in it - just smashed into a car at 2830 N. Hamlin Ave

This is out of control. I just posted about issues going on on this block and this just happened. The police and the alderman need to do something about this NOW. We are having a yard sale and some Latino male just pulled up and did this to a white Chrysler 300 parked by the hydrant in front of this house on purpose. Guessing it has to do with the gang members hanging out here. This never happened in the five years that we have lived here.

In addition to calling 911 and getting your neighbors to do the same - for everything that seems suspicious - go to your next beat meeting. There may already be people working together to get this place shut down and if not, you can speak to your CAPS officers and neighbors in person about the issue.
Our area has been dealing with some "problem residents" and one problem house in particular for several years. As annoying as it is, the police can't just go in and start arresting people. They need to be able to prove the house is a problem before it gets put on any lists or gets any of the already fairly scarce resources devoted to it. The first step is for the police to show "calls for service" to the address. 911 calls, about this house in particular, have to be numerous enough to stand out. To get this done, you really need to hook up with your neighbors. Try an email list - as soon as one person calls 911, send out a note, have everyone else call too.

  • Do you know if they moved out? I've been calling police and filing online reports all summer. I've finally noticed silence from that place for three whole days!

Small Home Daycare

I will be moving to the neighborhood of Irving Park & Elston Ave. next month and would like to continue my home daycare which I have done so for the past 12 years in the Roscoe Village area. I provide healthy, well balanced meals in a loving and nurturing environment. I charge reasonable rates and would love the opportunity to care for your child. Please email me at bgrmcd@comcast.net for more information.
