Do we really want Chuy and an elected school board?

I voted for Chuy Tuesday night because I don't like Rahm. But the more I read about Chuy, the more it seems like he's in just beholden to different special interests than Rahm. I don't like the decisions Rahm has made to fix the budget, but I'm also worried that Chuy hasn't actually said anything about what decisions he's going to make. And we want to have more elected officials to there's more opportunities for moral bankruptcy and the lack of transparency. This is a good argument http://t.co/gFJXBjJd1c

  • southsideandy A South Side outpost in the heart of the N.W. Side

All politicians are pretty much beholden to some special interest somewhere, so it's hard to vote using that as a differentiation point, honestly.

The "unknown" as to how Garcia would operate as mayor certainly is there, but I feel comfortable taking more of a chance than what we've received from Emanuel.

  • Deb R 60641 resident 40 + yrs.

I'd like Chuy to explain where he's planning on getting the money to hire the 1,000 police personnel he keeps saying he's going to hire. Not only the money for their salary, but for their raises, health insurance, pension, disability, etc. I don't think this is a campaign promise he can keep. If I missed his full explanation, please inform me what it is.

Badger?

I know there have been some weird critter sightings around Irving Park. I found two prints back by the river at McFetridge the other day. What struck me is that it was big and had five toes. Dogs, Coyotes, Cougars and Bob Cats only have four.

  • Ooooo, otters! Would love to see those guys in the river!

  • Greg V. Cycling Dude

Hey, has anyone thought about beavers. I've seen the chewed up trees along the DesPlaines river. And, some years ago, they were supposedly spotted at Wolf Point. They have large paws and their toes spread out.

Boil Water Advisory status?

Hello, we received a Boil Water Advisory on Feb. 26 "until further notice" and I called 311 to check the status, she said the water is safe to use now and that the city would not be providing any formal notice, is that trustworthy? Any thoughts? Thanks!

$100 Rush Hour parking ticket.

Does this restriction start before or after the sign? I took this picture from where I was parked ( on the corner.) You can see the sign about a third block up. I have been parking here for 2 years with no problems but if I am wrong I will park somewhere else. I could google it but every blockers tend to know it all..

  • Pretty obvious that it applies to the whole block and side of the street. You've been lucky that this is the first ticket in 2 years.

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

If it was obvious I would have parked elsewhere. I thought I was in the clear since the sign was ahead of me. I did not realize the parking ban was for the entire block. Good to know. I'll park right across the street from now on.
I have been lucky. *crossing fingers.

Wayne Electric Building - Elston and California

Does anyone know what is going on with the old Wayne Electric Building on Elston and California? They just put up fencing all around the property. Has it been bought out? Are they going to tear it down and build a commercial or residential bldg?

  • They were tearing at least part of it down when I went by on Thursday morning.

  • Jacko Z just livin' in the hood

Pedestrian traffic would help, however the size of the sidewalks and discombobulated intersections make it very hard to develop a restaurant/bar. Also the Elston strip just south of this intersection needs a redevelopment.

Plows and election results

Somebody (not me, I do not have the skills) should overlay today's plowing from http://clearstreets.org/ against ward or precinct level maps of the election results -- I'd want to know if the ward was in a runoff and the % that voted for Chuy.

This would surely get picked up on Chicago blogs -- somebody get on it and be internet famous! :D

  • One good thing about the runoff is you can bet the streets will continue to be plowed very well the rest of the winter.

Tearing Up Streets by St. Wenceslaus

Starting next week the City has announced that it will be tearing up streets in my area, including the Monticello block by St. Wenceslaus, for water/sewer repairs. They've also posted "no parking" signs that extend into April. There doesn't seem to be any provision of what the many people who pack the block with parked cars each night should do. All the blocks around are zoned for permit parking. Has anyone heard any news about easing of permit parking restrictions or such? Yes, I can call the alderman, but I wanted to tap the community grapevine first. Thanks.

Polling place electioneering laws....

What's the distance supposed to be for electioneering during a municipal elections? I was annoyed and offended by their suggestion that I take their ballot and use jt to fill in my blanks - like i can't make up my own mind. I wasn't hit with as much this time around at a different polling place but but could just be that it's a "smaller" election (less choices to strain my poor little brain *eyeroll*). I think it should be illegal for anyone to be on premises at all, it reeks of intimidation.

Deb Mell signs everywhere

As if her 2 - 3 flyers in our mailbox aren't enough, yesterday I looked out my window to see a Deb Mell sign hanging from our fence. Nobody asked us if they could hang it. I took it down, but then noticed that the whole neighborhood had them strung up. About one for every 1.5 houses.

Don't they have to ask if they can hang signs on our property??

I can't wait until she loses this election so I don't have to hear the name Mell in the 33rd ward again.

  • @Robert - Mozart north of Diversey. No other campaign signs were taken down, but it still doesn't feel right that she should be able to post signs without homeowners' permission.

Hey guys I have a sign in my front yard, but Deb Mel personally came to my door to ask. She said she wanted to make sure before they put me down for one (since I already supported her when she came to my door). There's a lot of over zealous workers out there who might be bombing people's yards with the signs, but feel free to reach out to her to tell her. She's very responsive. I'm not saying she's the best person for the 33rd ward, but she's sure as hell better than Rey Colon. In my 3 years living here, Colon never returned any of my 7 e-mails (and multiple calls). I'm so thankful they redrew the districts and we at least have someone who is responsive.

Dog Problem

There's a man who lives on Richmond, almost on Waveland, who has two dogs who he lets run around the neighborhood. Of course they poop all over, which is bad enough. The problem is with the snow they can't get to the grass so the sidewalk is covered with their poop. The man happened to be outside, so I asked him about picking it up. He said he wasn't going to do it and didn't care if it bothered his neighbors. What do you do about someone like that?

Campaign Mailer Volume (Looking at you Deb Mell)

Everyday I get 2-5 pieces of campaign literature from Deb Mell's campaign. Politics aside, this is absolutely ridiculous. No other candidate comes close to her volume of garbage mailers.... I can handle one here or there, that's fine. I understand that campaigns have to get the word out, but it's absurd to get 5 things in a single day! It almost makes me want to change my opinion that I've formed via research and discussion.... I cant wait till this election is over.

  • Agreed: the number of mailings Mell is doing are ridiculous. One of her brochures indicates that she is "creating jobs" in the 33rd ward. For whom? Printers?

,the Mayor's Super PAC "Chicago Forward" gave Ald. Mell $50,643. She is #4 on the list of current aldermen who are the focus of his super PAC money. He is also paying for polls for the candidates. His wealthy friends are no doubt following the Mayor's lead as well. Much more money will be spent on any aldermanic run-off races. So vote and cross you fingers for no run-off in the 33rd Ward. If there is a run-off, expect full mailboxes through the 4/7 run-off election. Recycle the mailers if you can.
Excess mailers may mean you are a targeted regular voter or a long-time resident.
Duplicate mailers mean that you are several target lists by people/organizations with money to spend. I believe that the Direct Mail Marketing Association 's "Do No Send Lists" for reducing junk mail, specifically exempts political-related mail (that is considered free speech. To reduce your junk mail, use the form at:http://www.directmail.com/directory/mail_preference/Default.aspx
A similar list exists for junkphone calls from telemarketers, but neither lists is 100% effective, they may only reduce and not eliminate junk mail or calls.

Yes, be careful around them (like any other felon), but they are now free and need a place to live, and to restart their lives. If we treated them like ordinary people, perhaps they'd be less likely to re-offend and go back to jail.

Keep in mind too that there are a lot of people listed in sex offender registries who really shouldn't be there. Examples include an 18-year-old who had sex with a 17-year-old (depending on the state), or two 14-year-olds "sexting" with each other. Don't assume the worst.

If you've been there and could share how you learned to live again, I would love to hear from you as well. Please feel free to write me privately if you would rather not post here. I would appreciate any thoughts you can share.
