Candles, signs and a vigil on Hamlin and George?

Anyone know what this vigil was for? Apparently someone named "green eyes" died. Not sure if it was gang related or if he was shot, hit by a car, etc?

  • Also curious about this, my building has been tagged with "RIP Greeneyes". Vigil/remembrance is still going on today.

  • Dave Guthrie Live in Chicago

I saw them tagging my building last night and said something but they just said "it's chill. the cops say it's chill" It was gang related. The guy was part of the Young Latin Organization - Cobras.

  • Please call the Alderman and CAPS office first thing in the morning and let them know what's going on. Hopefully they can get your building sorted quickly and monitor the shrine for an appropriate amount of time to keep things safe.

gunshots

Did anyone hear gunshots near Addison and Lawndale at about 5 a.m. on Thursday (9/18) morning?

  • PBB

Oh, I agree. I always try to be careful. Just kind of scary to be woken up by gunshots at 5 in the morning. Be safe everyone!

  • I live around Lawndale & Cornelia also and heard the gunshots both times - Thursday and Sunday - but didn't see anything either time. I did sort of question whether it was fireworks on Sunday. When I was walking my dog on Wednesday night around 930/10pm, there seemed to be a group of men having an "animated discussion" at Eddy & Hamlin - wonder if it was related? Haven't seen the SUV they were standing by since and I walk my dog daily (sometimes twice).

Graffiti on the roof of Bread & Wine

Did anyone else notice the tagging on the roof yesterday? Someone climbed on their roof to deface their building.

I was extremely pissed off when I saw it driving by yesterday.

Bread and Wine owners please don't let this discourage you from the great things you are doing for our neighborhood.

"A revised project plan from the city shows the height of the barriers being reduced 2 feet, but the hollow barricades will need to be redone. The revised plan also includes a reduction of the barriers' slope from a sharp 63 degrees to 34 degrees."

I have lived in Avondale/Logan square area for more than a decade, and although the homeless camp is unsightly and sometimes smelly I pass through that underpass on a daily basis and have never had a problem with the homeless people who stay there. On at least three separate occasions I have had conversations with some of them. I now realize they don't want to be there any more than we want them there. I was present last week when the city came and removed their belongings once again, It was heart wrenching to see the one female who stays there literally crying because she lost the last of everything she owned once again. It is very sad. I tried to put myself in her shoes. It is hard for me to understand how or why people live this way, or why some people CHOOSE to live this way. I honestly don't believe that this underpass will ever be free of the homeless. Maybe if we help them, hire them or just try to come to some kind of understanding with them we can all live with the situation, after all they have to sleep somewhere

gunshot fired near drake/cullom

Did anyone else hear a single gunshot fired around 3:15-3:30am this morning? I didn't hear any cars or police or anything.. just a single shot around me. It sounded like it was a couple blocks away.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

The police should have shown up within ten minutes of your 911 call.

Police resources are allocation, in part, based on the number of 911 call. If you see something or hear something, call it in!

  • I didn't hear it Kora. I heard something earlier around 9, but since it repeated a couple times and could not hear it clearly I dismissed it as fireworks.

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

  • I bet Dr. Who's Time Machine is in there !

  • An older woman lives there. I think it used to be a beauty salon, and now is her home.

can you all call 311 about this corner (I already have) do you see that puddle there, it's become a caved in nightmare, people have broken their axel going through there.

  • well, that doesn't explain why it's been filing up for at least 7 years (as long as I've been in the area) hopefully whatever they do will fix it for good. It's very good news to hear they were there. Thanks!

  • Greg V. Cycling Dude

That plastic covering makes sense. When they put a new water line in Monticello a few years ago, there was plastic sheeting under the sewer grate in front of my house, to keep gravel and other construction debris from filling it in. I called 311 a few days after completion of the project to get it removed. Glad I did.

We have very happy news! Butch was found tonight around 7 pm in the alley near Sunnyside and Central Park...nearly a mile from our home. We received a call from a teenage boy, Luis, who had seen a flyer we posted at the bus stop on Irving Park at Elston on his way to school. He had seen Butch walking around the street near his house this morning and yesterday afternoon and thought it was a neighborhood dog. After talking to me, Luis recruited 3 of his friends and they scoured the alleys in the neighborhood and finally found him. They called us and we came running. I didn't believe it on the way there, readying myself for a joke or the wrong dog. But there he was, all bundled up in one of the boy's flannel shirts. I scooped him up in my arms and cried.

We are sure that a teenager took him based on the scooter left behind at our gate. After seeing that he was not a puppy, but instead a blind, old dog, the little jerk dumped him rather than bringing him back to us.

But Luis and his friends put my faith back in teenagers. These boys are my heroes and I am forever grateful to them. Yes, they got reward money, but they were truly happy to see us reunited and proud to be a part of our happiness.

Thank you all so much for you support and prayers.

  • Thank god! Broke my heart every time I passed by one of the flyers. Nice job, Luis and friends!

  • So happy he is back home. Those teenagers will also cherish the story of how they helped find your lost dog, for the rest of their lives.

IGS- Bait and switch

People are going around the Irving Park area in Yellow Jackets claiming to need to confirm your ComEd bill. I thought it was strange, so I looked up previous posts. It ends up when they look at your bills, they switch your energy service to IGS without your permission. Just be cautious.

  • A&K

Thanks for the warning. Sure sounds like fraud to me.

  • Thank you for this! They came to our door recently asking for bills. I wasn't home but my family member was. Luckily, she didn't give them anything. I'll let her know just in case it happens again.

  • Lia Oh Yeah Lia Oh

They showed up at my place about 3 weeks ago. The girl was super annoyed when I refused to let her "help" me... Glad I didn't.

Frank the Chicken is Missing

My neighbor is missing his rooster from his yard. Frank (the rooster) has lived in the yard for years. Last Friday, we saw Frank on Elbridge. (Sometimes he strolls around the neighborhood.) Then today, I saw the missing signs on light posts. Frank lives at the corner of Elbridge and Drake. Attached is a blurry photo of Frank from last Monday and the flyer. Please help bring Frank back to his yard. He's got a nice, warm dog/ rooster house and a couple of cats and an owner who misses him.

  • I feel bad for this family bc I know they loved him. I lived around the corner from there for a year and Frank made my life miserable with his constant cock a doodle doo-ing. He's a very striking rooster and hopefully someone can find him.

  • I said to the owner of the house once, how much I liked walking by in the evening and seeing his chicken, he said to me, "It's not my chicken. He just showed up one night." That was at least two years ago. Frank has a little dog house, with his name above it and a heat lamp and some straw, so the owner really adopted him as a pet. I feel pretty terrible about this. I liked Frank also and I'm hoping he's found.

  • Villagirl Villagirl

I left a message for Frank's family this afternoon. We have a mystery rooster staying in our back yard this week. I'm not sure it's Frank, though--he has not cock-a-doodle-doo-ed and we are a bit far from his home. His tail also appears smaller. Fingers crossed, though. I would love to find this rooster's family!

Gunshots near 3800 N block of Monticello last night?

Anyone hear what sounded like loud gunshots last night near 3800 N Monticello? Around 1am. 8-10 shots.

  • Tom G Living in Avondale since 1994

Yes. Sunday night at about 1:30 am. I checked the time because it woke me up and called 911 to report shots fired. But I heard this near 3400 Monticello--that's on the other side of Addison--and it sounded real close. A few quick bursts about 12 shots total.

  • Thanks Tom

  • We heard it too. We are over about 3800 Bernard.

Physician

Anyone know of a good physician that treats anxiety. My physician left to another state and my therapist is booked until December.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Your primary care doctor should be able to refer you to a specialist

  • Tom G Living in Avondale since 1994

Any physician can prescribe anti-anxiety meds for you for the short term and will probably refer you to a psychiatrist, which is the kind of physician that treats anxiety. If you just want a compassionate physician who has dealt with people with anxiety, I will recommend Dr. Paul Abbo. Look him up online. He might even refer you to a therapist who can fill in until yours returns. In any case, keep looking and don't give up. My prayers are with you.

  • MakeChicagoSafe Please keep our Chicago Safe

Thanks so much Tom G I'll look him up...

Cleveland School construction?

Hi! Anyone have kids going to Cleveland and know what the construction is all about? I live three houses away and am glad they aren't just laying down useless sod to be trampled to dust. I wish I knew what was happening; they don't have any information posted on their website. Anyone know what's happening there?

  • Installing a "field turf" field. They are working on the drainage now. Seems silly they waited to start until the week before classes but better than never. Agree that putting down sod there is futile. Last year it turned to dust in, what, a month?
