CPS School raffling off Tequila

My child's school is raffling off tequila for a fundraiser. The signs literally said "Tequila kit". I brought this to the attention of the principal who said it would be corrected. Now the fundraiser signs say "Adult drinkable kit". Seriously.

How can I get this some more attention and get the school to put a stop to this?

This is not to say that I do not enjoy an adult beverage from time to time... but a government funded low income public school is not the place to advertise or distribute alcohol.

This is also the school that sent home a letter about peanut allergies and then had PB&J bars on the lunch menu the next day. The same school sells pop and chips after school. Again - a lot of other soapboxes to stand on... but just a glimpse at what we're dealing with.

Schools will always need to fundraise. The Latin School does fundraisers, and I don't suspect it is because they are underfunded. Every school does. In fact, I would say that fundraisers are one of the best means of building community cohesion, since normally groups of parents work to do these things. I would be very wary of a school that did no fundraising.

It's really hard to see the dire consequences of having alcohol among the items that are available at a raffle or auction. It is exceedingly unlikely that this will be any child's first exposure to the fact that alcohol exists. If you feel your child needs instruction or context for the fact of a raffle with alcohol, give that to the child.

I believe my son's school is considered low income although many kids that attend the school come from higher income families. It sounds like you are saying we should have different guidelines for different income levels. Have fun with that! I truly see nothing wrong with it. I would be extremely annoyed if a parent complained about this. Many times parents donate new items they can't use, but another parent would be happy to have it. As many have said . . . LIGHTEN UP!

Orange Tabby (name is Chief)

I found an agency that would take in the Orange Tabby from Lawndale if someone is willing to pick up and drop it off. Not sure how to go about this. They believe that the cat is held just for up to 7 days.

  • I only hope the owners take better care of him this time around....

  • I wish more people would choose to rescue from a shelter. The cats are spayed, chipped, they make you sign papers to keep it indoors and if something happens like this or to the owner, the pet goes back into the loving arms of the shelter.

39th Ward Alderman Debate?

Thanks Bob, but occasionally my requests for city services somehow get lost and there is no record when I search the 311 tracker, and while you can request garbage cans online, status is not available for that service. If you go to the tracker site, there are only 13 services that are tracked through this method. When I called about the taxis I was looking for information as to when/if they are allowed to park, etc. The cab complaint form is for cab service complaints and is forwarded to the Dept of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection since they monitor the cabs, not sent to the police for ticketing. I thought the alderman's office could help me with that issue since I am not someone who jumps at the thought of making random city requests that may not be valid.

Also, for the record, when someone does a good job I am one of the first to give praise. Five calls in 20 years. I am not a complainer.

So now, those who have had enough of me can mute me.

  • Robert Murphy, thank you for the offer to discuss your vision, it is appreciated.

Orange Tabby found on Lawndale now at CACC

I spoke to Dr Abby at Felines & Canines. She is aware of the situation and said they are not able to pick up the cat, but will take him in and put him up for adoption if we could get him to them. She knows me and said she would do this as a favor. I am just not sure what it entails to pick up the cat. When I call CACC they will not release any information to me.

  • You can check out CACC Cat Transfer Teams FB page for instructions on how to pull the cat. Basically you will have to get an approved rescue to put a hold on him and get him pulled.

Shooting at Pulaski and Addison?

Just went out to the 7-11, and there is police tape up, a cruiser there, and obvious little markers for ballistics, with an officer snapping pics. The guy at the 7-11 said that either two cars were shooting at each other, or that a fight over at Brudders went out onto the street and one person shot another. Anyone have any details?

  • Frank Skony Long time Resident

Clarification - the tape and cruiser are outside of the Manee Thai restaurant on Pulaski.

  • from the Tribune this morning: A 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 10:20 p.m. in the Old Irving Park neighborhood, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The man was seating in the front passenger seat in a jeep in the 4000 block of West Addison Street when a male walked up and fired gunshots.

The man was shot in the right thigh and was driven to the 17th District police station before being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition stabilized.

7 mo old puppy available for adoption!

We have been fostering a wonderful puppy named Chaps from Illinois Birddog Rescue. He is a very handsome, 7 month old Pointer mix. He is 32 lbs and has some growing to do too (he may max out at 40/45 lbs) but he's mixed with a smaller breed...maybe a beagle? He's like a mini-pointer!

Chaps is dog and cat friendly. Potty trained. Obedient. Not an aggressive bone in his body, but he is quite the watch dog. And lots of...

Chaps is dog and cat friendly. Potty trained. Obedient. Not an aggressive bone in his body, but he is quite the watch dog. And lots of puppy. He's a great dog that would do great with another pup (he has grown up with dogs) or would learn to appreciate the individual attention in a single dog household.

Although we haven't tested him around kids (we only have a furry fam!), his sister is good with kids and we have every reason to believe he is too.

If you or family/friends been thinking about getting a dog, you should meet him! We'd love to find him a home in the neighborhood and watch this little man grow up. Please help spread the word!

STOLEN BUICK LESABRE DARK GREEN 1998

The witness said that there were 2 guys one white male and the other male is african american! The details of our car are, BUICK LESABRE 1998 SEMI DARK GREEN, IT HAS A DENT ON THE DRIVERS PASSENGER SIDE AND IT HAS A BLACK LEFT SIDE MIRROR. Our car was stolen on Fullerton and Sacramento. I was in the library around 1:30 pm to 2:10 pm then when i went out to the parking lot...I found out it wasn't in the parking lot where I parked it. PLEASE SHARE! Found cat

Found Orange tabby cat on N Lawndale on School & Lawndale the night of December 12, very friendly and clearly an indoor cat. Brought to the vet, the cat is not fixed and there was no microchip.

Email me for more pictures or details.

Cat was brought to Animal Care and Control:

2741 S. Western Ave
312-747-1407
www.petharbor.com

Cat's number at Animal Care and Control is ID#A122654.

  • Diana Davis-Tounsi My Kind Of Town

Sean, if we can do our best to spread the word about neutering and chipping that would be great too. I still think we should try to save as many strays as we can by adopting and fostering. :-)

  • If someone is truly interested in fostering this cat or adopting him, contact Tree House ASAP and tell them you want the cat and they would qualify as an approved rescue. And also know that turning over a cat to CACC should be a last resort, especially if it could be a neighbors pet. Sometimes folks just let their cats out all the time and while that may not be best for the cat the alternative fate that lies at CACC may ultimately be worse.

Addison Mall/New restaurant?

Does anybody have information as to what will be taking over the former Big and Tall space at Addison Mall? We are excited to see what is coming.

  • Panda Express makes more sense, but ick on that!

  • It is going to be a Panda Express. They are now hiring. I drove down Addison today. The construction is coming along nicely. I have been in the Albany Park /Avondale area my entire life. I am glad to see more business and revenue coming in. Who cares about what the borders are to the neighborhoods. Each one has almost the same problems if not more. It doesn't mean anyone is better then the other because of the area they are from. Just Saying.

My husband happened to be in the backyard with the dogs when he tried to open the side gate. The dogs started barking, the man said he lost his flip phone and gps said it was here. We did not open the gate and the man went on his way. I'm sure the barking dogs helped.

We are near Kimball and Montrose. He was a white male, blondish hair, buzz cut, late 20's. He may/may not be doing this around the neighborhood. Just a heads up!

  • AmandaB homeowner, dog lover & real estate agent!

Yes, it is possible it was innocent. I tried to make that clear. The whole thing just seemed odd.

Wanted to let others know in case there was no flip phone afterall (do flip phones even have GPS???) and he was making his way around the neighborhood is all!

  • Even if a flip-phone had GPS, it's highly unlikely it has a backdoor to allow a user to log in remotely and query the phone's location. Next time take his info down, if he's willing to share it, and then keep an eye out.

I recommend Richard Adorno, of Plumbing by Richard, 773-828-7337. A friend of mine who owns a couple of properties has had work done by him is very pleased by not only his work, but by his prices and time spent on the job. He also does electrical, carpentry, drywall, and painting. Free estimates!

Hi everyone. I am in the vicinity of Irving park and Kedzie (southwest of it near IHM church). My next door neighbors (next 2 flat over) are Romani Gypsies. While I understand that there are some very nice and honest Romani people, they are the stereotypical ones who run construction and fortune telling scams, let their children throw things out the window at my children, etc. My girlfriend and I (and our kids) move in this place in June. The first interaction I had with them was when I was approached by "Tony", the very large leader of the pack, gold chains and all. He asked me if I lived alone and who I lived with. The second encounter was with the other (younger.. 20s?) male figure in their house. He rang my doorbell (we are on the first floor) and asked if I wanted my sidewalk fixed. I told him I didn't own the property. He repeatedly asked who the owner was and what days they would be here. I shut the door in his face. He has rung the doorbell a few other times but went away after no one answered.

TODAY they rang the doorbell again. I am waiting on a UPS package. I looked out the window and saw big Tony standing there saying to the person on the stairs (who I couldn't see) "no one's there! no ones there!" . I double latched the door and ran to the back of the house to tell the girls to stay in their room. Came back to the living room and saw a U-Haul van speed away down the street, and their pickup truck pull out of the parking space in front of my house.

It sounds like they are casing us. My partner is at work today (we swap days off) and she always has our car, so I'm wondering if they think no one is her because the car is gone. We don't have any valuables but the thought of them trying to scam us is sickening!

I'm sorry you are going through trouble, but this is exactly the kind of information that is so helpful to your neighbors. Officer Parks and Sergeant Anderson were the 2 police officers at the meeting. Their email is caps.017district@chicagopolice.org. I encourage you to contact them, even if no specific crime has been committed yet. There was also a rep from Alderman Mell's office, who said he had received your email.

CAPS Meetings

I must confess that I have lived in my house for many years, and just attended my first Chicago Police CAPS meeting for Beat 1733. I found the police officers there to be very respectful and responsive to my concerns about the neighborhood. However, there were only 3 citizens and 1 representative from Alderman Mell's office there! I would love to see more participation in these meetings. You can find your beat and meeting here: https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal/page/portal/ClearPath/Communities/Districts. Let's make the most of this opportunity to make our voices heard.

Potholes, people turning left, and light timing makes it dangerous enough. Having people stand and walk around the middle of both streets to panhandle increases the danger factor substantially. I don't drive often, but I'm always terrified of accidentally hitting the person standing or walking in the road to panhandle or hitting another car when I have to drive into another lane to avoid said person. It's even worse when the roads are iced over.

I don't want to call the police (I have no interest in getting anybody arrested), so is there a social service organization I could contact or could the aldermen for the wards that border these intersections get involved? I know Laurino is one, but I'm not familiar with who else might border the intersection. I really don't want to see somebody get hurt out there in the name of making a few dollars.

  • Thanks Susan. Believe me I understand. I also happen to know the family of the victim extremely well and also know the perpetrator. This was one of the reasons I decided to make a point that this did not go unnoticed. He lied and has caused great harm and he needs to be punished. Though I feel for his children, he chose his path in life. He needs to man up.

  • If you really want me to comment then it's mortifying. He fooled an entire community and I can’t place blame on Independence Park like I can with his wife. She didn’t know? People can’t comment because they’re beating themselves up for not knowing, for not protecting a child and for letting this go on in their world, for missing signs, for (God forbid) allowing their children near him. Some are questioning their own children. Some are simply quiet because that’s how they cope with something this horrific.
