Yesterday's Short Downpour

Did anyone else have problem with water on their street like we did and maybe in their basement? One of my neighbor's pumped water out of his basement, as it poured. We must find solutions to this damaging issue before another major and prolonged rain hits us like the one in April 2013. Please contact our politician for help.

    I agree that flood controls need to be installed by individual homes. This seems unavoidable.

    However, some flood systems work better than others, it could be helpful to get some credible info to the community-at-large.

    Also, I do expect regular maintenance of the sewer system, which is not happening! Two catch basins out of four by my house were totally blocked for years. So, when the street water was reaching my front windows, after flooding cars on the street, in April 2013, I got reasonably concerned. I had called 311 to generate tickets to clean the blockage and nothing happened. I stopped the Water Management crew on the street to inspect and to address the problem, but also nothing happened. Only after contacting Alderman Cullerton in March of this year, these catch basins got promptly addressed. I am grateful for his support!

    We also have a number of sewer system cave-ins in the area, which city must address. Ward 41 is having a sewer lining project done to address the cave-ins and I would like to find out if we can have the same.

    Bottom line, although we cannot drastically change the physical sewer system we have, we can at least strive for its regular inspection and maintenance.

    Don't know how familiar you are with this group, but I get emails from them about solving urban flooding all the time...I'm not involved with them, so I can't say that they're "any good" but maybe check them out.

What happened to the MAILBOX at Pittsburgh and Irving Park?

I used to mail my bills and letters there all the time... last fall I noticed it was gone. Still gone. When is it going to be replaced?

  • Paula, Belmont Terrace 8-year resident, 36th ward (for now...)

    Rich, I'm kjnd of in the same boat. The mailbox we regularly used at Orange & Roscoe Streets also disappeared a while ago. I have to wonder about the discrepancy between our part of Chicago, and Norridge...

    Thanks Minerva, I'll contact Rep. Quigley.

  • Kordian- Northwest Side Player, Juice Bars, Office Equipment

    I heard the reason they removed the mailboxes was that people from Itasca would stop on their commute and constantly use the mailboxes as toilets. I thought that sounded a little outlandish, but I have a cousin who works for the post office that confirmed it.

Where is Alderman Nicholas Sposato?

Why isn't Alderman Nicholas Sposato on everyblock for Ward 36? I know Tom for the 38th is (I Used to be in the 38th and we got remapped)

  • Evan N. Newland newbie

    He's also on Nextdoor, but I'm not sure if he's active.

  • I guess we see the real plan now. Screw over the 36th in the remap, move to the 38th, campaign there. Chicago politics at its best I see. Well, I guess I would want off the Titanic as well, nice way to screw over all in the 36 (those that were forced in here too).

Chess in CPS Schools and Beyond, like Libraries and Parks, Too!

Chess provides a fantastic way to develop critical thinking and plus through strategic play. There is a current movement to bring chess to every CPS school and it would be great to bring on board all of our neighborhood kids soon.

One can easily develop the basic skills with the following:

"Learn to Play Chess with Fritz & Chesster: Chess Complete 3-Pack" CD-ROM;

Free or paid membership on https://www.chesskid.com/ ;

Attending free Saturday chess games with some lessons during the school year at Edgebrook Library;

Attending a chess camp like Chess-Ed at Edgebrook Lutheran Church, http://www.chess-ed.com/camps.htm; Dynamic Chess, Oak Park, at http://dynamicchessinc.com/page5.php; or Active Learning at DePaul's O'Hare Campus, http://www.chesscamp.com/camcategorysearch.php?cpid=1&anc=USA%20Chess%20Camp .

Our family's ultimate learning tool is http://www.chessmagnetschool.com/

  • If you would like for Chess-Ed to provide a program at your school, please
    contact them at info@chess-ed.com or call Alice (847-775-9906) or Rachel
    (847-567-2887). Much information can be found on their website and they are

  • Did you know that Wright College offers a chess & sports camp with the help of Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation? It runs July 21-25, 9-3 pm.
    http://rknights.org/registration/summer-camps/

    If Oak Park is not too far for you, look at Dynamic Chess Inc camp during July 7-11, August 4-8, and August 18-22. Their camp is also a combo of chess & sports but the lunch is included in their fee! Various options available, full or partial day, full week or 2 or 3 day camps. A big thank you to all the neighbors here who are sensitive to the nesting birds. It's a joy to watch them, and a gift from nature. Leave them alone til they're able to leave the nest.
