FREE Quality Theatre Performance for the Family to Enjoy!! --Feb. 20th - March 29th, 2015

In the past I have spoken fondly of Stage Coach Theatre's camps for children. For years now, they have continued to amaze our family with their knowledge, talents and teaching results. Through them, my family learned of Quest Theatre Ensemble, another amazing organization, and their community giveback. As a matter of fact, the two organizations share some common members.

If you have ever wondered but could not take out your family to a quality free show, here is your opportunity:

"Join Quest for the world premiere musical, Tomato Queen! Journey with Camina as she tries to discover the secret to growing a perfect tomato--a feat that could earn her a crown! Cheer on Camina and her new friend Dormouse as they battle homesickness, a humongous Hornworm, and an Evil Scientist bent on destruction. Tomato Queen features live music and Quest's signature large-scale puppetry." http://questensemble.org/index.php

  • Minerva* Performing Schools. Performing Communities.

Saw the performance last night with my family. A good number of children, even of preschool age, were present in the audience. The performance was professionally prepared and executed for mere donations! This is a great community outreach, indeed. Thank you, Quest!

Cutting down all the trees on my block

So far 10 trees have been removed. As we speak another is being cut. This started at 8:30 am. There was no posting on the tree or anywhere near it. I have called the City and have been told its cause of the ash bettle. None of the trees on my block have been or looked sick. They bloom every year, from top to bottom. My neighboor had hers removed because she hated it. And had a process to go through to do so. Shortly after that is when they started chopping them down left and right. When you looked at the cut down trees they were healthy, there was no sign of any infestation. When I asked the city why, I was told ALL OF THE ASH TREES ARE INFESTED, AND THEY WILL BE REMOVING THEM ALL. Also no new trees will be placed back unless the owner wants to have them come and do it. I think there is also a fee for that. My neighboor on the other side of the lady who had hers removed, he is refusing to have his cut down. So there has been talk between the neighboor on the other side n the one who had the tree removed. I think its disgusting. Our neighboorhood looks like garbage now. All the fresh air that we get from this polluted city is getting harder to get.

Mason ave trees

Ok so today my friend that lives down the street stopped by. He told me he saw the city trimming branches on his tree and thought that's all they were doing. Well the cut the whole tree down and told him that it was dead. He had told them it wasn't and didn't want it cut down. Phillip I had told him about your idea for Mason ave. I was wondering how we go about this. He and his wife want to join in getting trees back on Mason ave. The tree provided shade and they are upset. So if anyone can help us out please get ahold of me. Thank you all ;-)

My heart goes out to the families with special needs children. They need more understanding that the harsh bill HB 3402. If you agree, please contact your State Rep. today or tomorrow. Use this link to find out who your Illinois state representative at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=44862 .

Source for content below: ICHE Legislative Task Force Alert E-mail.

Background:
Many types of special needs issues families deal with directly impact a child's ability to attend school regularly. Parents with special needs kids need more understanding, more flexibility, more grace with attendance issues. House Bill 3402 bill does just the opposite. It treats them more harshly.

Virtually every time there is an effort to toughen truancy laws, it's because the EXISTING truancy laws are not being enforced.

This bill would allow the parent of a child to be jailed for six months rather than one month. Kids with special needs rely on their parents possibly even more heavily than kids without special needs. Who will take care of these kids if their parents are jailed for six months? If the child's special needs are causing the irregular attendance, will they jail the next caretaker, too?

It is unfair to discriminate and treat parents more harshly just because their child has more needs than others.

The first and most powerful advocates for a child with special needs are the parents. It's bad policy to attack the ones primarily responsible for protecting the child.

This bill unconstitutionally discriminates against parents of children receiving special education services.

The bill would not directly impact families with special needs children who are not receiving--and do not wish to receive--special education services.

If anyone is interested in keeping the chess enthusiasm going at Dunning Public Library, we hope to hear from you. Could you volunteer your chess knowledge? It would be awesome to have quarterly chess seminars for the new and the not-so-new to chess.

Also, I heard that the Chicago Park District is planning to provide chess instruction to their staff this spring. This extra knowledge is expected to be incorporated into the summer park camp activities. At least one of our local parks has chess sets already, which they have used many years back. Thus, opportunities are being created to grow the love for chess. Perhaps, we could even get park chess clubs.

Any Feedback on Boot Camps at Our Local Parks? Likes? Dislikes?

Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness taps returning military veterans to teach military-style fitness classes like calisthenics, sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups and other fitness and nutritional techniques to families in communities most in need of wellness services. I see that local parks like Hiawatha, Shabbona and Jefferson offer such programs at a steal deal. Would you recommend them to friends and family?

lol I have lost my dog on March 4th in the Austin and Bernice area.it's a 7 year old female German Shepherd

  • Me too Kathleen. She is gorgeous! I private messaged the OP but I have not heard anything back. I was hoping this was their pup since she was found a few blocks away and on the same day theirs got away but as of now she is still posted as lost on helping lost pets and lostdogsillinois, so we don't know if it was a match.
Thankfully this pup is safe with the family that found her and hope the OP found their pup if this was not her.

"A new report being released this morning shows that the supposedly budget-strapped Windy City – which for years has not made its full pension payments – actually has mountains of cash sitting in a slush fund controlled by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Indeed, as the report documents, the slush fund now receives more money each year than it would cost to adequately finance Chicago’s pension funds. Yet, Emanuel is refusing to use the cash from that slush fund to shore up the pensions. Instead, his new pension “reform” proposal cuts pension benefits, requires higher contributions from public employees and raises property taxes in the name of fiscal responsibility. Yet, the same “reform” proposal will actually quietly increase his already bloated slush fund.

But it gets worse: an investigation by Pando has discovered that Emanuel has been using that same slush fund to enrich some of his biggest campaign contributors."

What Are the Rules for Political Phone Calls?

I have been getting unwelcomed political calls and would like to know what are the rules governing them? I know they are allowed by the National Do Not Call Registry. However, shouldn't the calling party identify themselves and tell us who is paying for the call? I am accustomed to hearing such details in political ads, but I did not get this disclosure in the two recent phone recordings left on my home phone. Can I get some guidance here, please?

All's fair in love and war, and politics is war. First I used to tell the robotic surveyors that I was undecided. Then I started "leaning" toward voting for a different candidate with each call. Then I "definitely" will vote for a different candidate with each call. Voting is still by secret ballot and it doesn't matter what people say when the robots call; what matters is when the voters actually arrive at the polling places. And no candidate has a right to know what the outcome will be until the last fat lady sings in the voting booth.

Based on review of the latest City Colleges of Chicago catalog, particularly the section for Wright College, I can't help but conclude that the family programming is stuck in the dark ages. The offerings understandably focus on the staples of education: math and reading. However, where are the computer programming and robotics classes? Music is offered on Saturday mornings, when a lot of children are engaged with sports' teams. Why not offer music later in the afternoon or in the early evenings? We are living in an increasingly interdependent global economy, why not offer foreign languages to children, not just the adults, specifically, Spanish and Polish, given our local demographics. As I recall, chess is offered in conjunction with swimming in the summer, but how about offering chess in the early evenings, during the school year, too? We all could cook and eat better. How about having instruction on cooking coupled with nutrition for the young ones, offered as an after-school program? Dance, Drama, and Create class is also offered on Saturday mornings, which competes with sports, as already mentioned, and also with chess tournaments. Most of all, there is a lot of support that can be found for developing a reader, however writing continues to get poor coverage. How about teaching the process, including: brainstorming, scampering and mind mapping, starting with the elementary children? One could also argue for adding an offering of outdoor science. There is an adjacent public land that could be utilized and coupled with 4H curriculum. If desired, our community could have its own miniature Garfield Park Conservatory.

On the positive note, the programming pricing is amazingly affordable! Also, one can build a preschool 1/2-day with the various classes offered, back to back, in the same room. And, the swimming program is the crown jewel with the demand way, way outpacing the supply.

Wright College could also act as a satellite location for programs offered by vendors like the Center for Gifted ~ Midwest Torrance Center for Creativity. They are affordable and current with class selections. Last November, according to their on-line schedule, they offered a couple of classes at our local Thorp Scholastic Academy. These were surprisingly short, one day, 3 hours each classes though. Nevertheless, one was titled "Create a Lego Movie! (1-3) and the other was "STEM: Hoppers and Hovercraft (3-8)" Check it out at http://www.centerforgifted.org/

We can request the change with our governor at:
    http://www2.illinois.gov/gov/Pages/ContacttheGovernor.aspx

We can write Wright College President David Potash at dpotash@ccc.edu

We can ask for help from Stand for Children and our state and local representatives, like Mulroe, Martwick and TBD Alderman.

Things need and should change with the times.
