Recommendations, please: Drywalling w/insulation and/or painting (to finish job presently down to br

I had water damage with the storm and I hired an Angie's List company that removed the plaster to the bricks (1906 house) in the empty rental-1/3 front living room and 1/3 front small bedroom and -1/3 ceiling. The company estimate (twice given)was 'padded' 2 and 3 times (I was there the whole time) and the ins. company (and I) refuse to allow them to complete the job. I'm 'good' to my workmen and what a good job done for a fair price. Please help if you have experience and thanks!

  • Thank you both so very much...I've given up totally on Angie's List...the more money to Angie's List ads, the higher score and higher on their list...and if you have ANY trouble, even with 'Big Deals', the 'List' basically says 'what do you want US to do about it'
APPRECIATED Everyblock and both of you!!!!

  • Kitty - did you pick one of these. How was your experience?

I have both my study and deck that needs painting, and some blinds mounting - looking for someone and come into blitz it all at once

Alderman Joe Moreno gets $3,000 from Live Nation / House of Blues

Alderman Joe Moreno (Ward 1) just received $3,000 of heartfelt love from Music Megalopoly Corporation LIVE NATION / HOUSE OF BLUES. Perhaps related to a deal for CONGRESS THEATRE ?

Only Alderman Brendan Reilly (Ward 42 / Streeterville) has also received HOB $ (mere $1500 per year, less than Moreno). HOB concert/restaurant venue in Chicago is in Ald. Reilly's downtown city ward.

Home daycare suggestions

Hi neighbors,
I'm in need of some licensed daycare and nanny suggestions in Logan Square to start midSept. My kids will be 3yrs & 2 mths.
Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks!

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Do a search on Les Petits Amis. We've had our boy there for almost 16 months now, and we love it. Just north of Diversey on Richmond (east of Sacramento by a block).

  • Little bird prep. My friend's son goes there and they are happy. I use a daycare downtown and love it (in case you work downtown). Let me know if you want details.

  • Thank you both.

Julie, I work in the South Loop off Roosevelt, a downtown daycare would work also. Do you mind forwarding details?
    Thanks again.

Public recycling bins?

The one flaw of my apartment building is that there's no recycling bin. Anyone know a publically-available recycling bin in Logan Square that accepts all kinds of paper? I looked at the city's listings as well as Chicago Recycling Coalition, but I haven't seen any in the neighborhood.

"Fresh Market" on Western, formerly known as Danny's

Does anyone know anything about the "Fresh Market" being built on Western? It's at about Western and Shakespeare, across from a small strip mall. It seems to have been in the works for a while, not quite sure if they're making too much progress. I live nearby but wanted to see if anyone had the inside scoop.

Thanks!

  • Joselito I write things and people pay me for it.

Paul - when you open, make a post on Everyblock about it. There are tons of people in the area that would really like to check out a grocery store that's within really close walking distance.

  • Joselito,
I will absolutely post it on the site. Thanks for the feedback. I am usually there in the mornings during the week and feel free to stop by and have a look. Also please check out our facebook page. www.facebook.com/freshmarketplaceIL

Effectiveness of city's lawn builder

The city recently redid about 1,300 feet of 8-inch water main on my block. Included in this project was the "restoration," including new curbs, parkway sidewalks, and repaving the street (all good things). My main question here is if any of you have experience with this turf building they laid down? Is it effective? Will the grass grow back in time before the end of the summer, or should I expect to have to reseed next spring?

Thanks!

  • New seed or sod requires frequent watering. My neighbors gave up and covered their area with wood chips.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

Thanks everyone. Ironically, while I watered my new grass everyday, it was the people who never ever took care of their parkways that had the new seed come in fully. I have no tree or shade, so I suspect maybe the mix the contractor used was for part shade. I'm hoping this sunny turf grow I planted over the weekend comes in before the winter.

Strike3 -- Once upon a time, Leavitt was a commercial corridor, and many of the properties have survived through creative adaptive re-use: The next block north from this property block had a furniture maker and showroom (now a single family home), there were corner taverns every few blocks (for instance, while now a single family, the building on nw corner of Hoyne / Leavitt was Pinky's until the early or mid 90's) and there was a funeral home at Leavitt/Lyndale (now a multi-unit apartment building). But, several have been lost, including two this summer -- this property and 2328 N. Leavitt, which was a corner tavern, then southwest style single family. Development and investment are good things, but balance and adaptive re-use are also welcome.

I remember stumbling by and staring at that place after good nights at the charleston in the late 80's/90's. That particular section around there had/ has such a real feel. Always dreamed of owning around there. I feel so helpless with this unstoppable determination to erase these neighborhoods and replace with depressing stuff. Gone are the folks who move in for what it is and keep it going. I by the way live too close to the lovely development at leavitt/haddon. Petition for I AM Logan Square to Remove Mark Fishman from their Board

"There is growing vocal discontent about Mark Fishman’s control and usage of the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (MAAF), as a tool to increase his substantial development and real estate holdings."

To find out more about this petition or sign it yourself: http://www.change.org/p/i-am-logan-square-ials-remove-mark-fishman-treasurer-from-your-board?recruiter=30671237&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

  • +1 for this, an arts organization claiming to serve the community should be held accountable fot removing relevant voices from the conversation. Like Fishman or not, he's an influential force in the neighborhood. Amie Sell's work was critical, but not inflammatory (not like it was a cartoon of him with hooves and horns) its removal from the festival at the request of a board member seriously tarnishes the groups credibility.

  • I would agree with bnagle as well. If an arts organization does censor work, credibility is damaged. I'm certainly no expert in arts production. However, as a consumer of the arts, I'd be very likely to visit "the forbidden fruit" that was censored at any pop-up gallery or "guerrilla artist" display. I'd welcome it actually.

Callahan shifted from right hand pitcher to infield and outfield positions during his versatile playing career. He was also White Sox manager for several years (1904- shared with Fielder Jones; and 1911-1913). Callahan also played for our Logan Squares team and then managed the Squares after his White Sox career. Milshire Hotel closing

From DNA info

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140429/logan-square/milshire-hotel-residents-told-find-other-housing

LOGAN SQUARE — The Milshire Hotel, one of Chicago's few remaining single-room housing options for the troubled, will close next month, according to the building’s owner.

The residents have until May 31 to find new places to live.

“After over 43 years in the Logan Square area, I have decided to close the Milshire Hotel,” said a notice to each resident signed “Your Landlord/Friend, Art.”

“I wish you all well, and hope you find another place to live that you will be happy in.”

The tenants union of the Milshire Hotel SRO have come to a settlement requiring tenants to move out by Sept. 2 in exchange for a cash settlement. (Lenny Gilmore)

    By Megan Crepeau, @crepeau, RedEye

Residents of the beleaguered Milshire Hotel agreed Wednesday to move out by 5 p.m. Sept. 2 in exchange for $4,000 per unit and a promise that owners of the single-room occupancy building will not attempt to collect back rent.

Tenants of the Milshire, 2525 N. Milwaukee Ave., have been tussling with management since April, when residents were notified of plans to sell the building and told to vacate. Some residents stayed and formed a tenants union, arguing that they had not been given proper eviction notices and that conditions at the building were so bad that making them leave would be a public hazard. About 18 residents remain in the building, said Tim Mahnke, Milshire tenant and president of the tenants union.

An ordinance passed by the City Council last month prohibits the city from issuing permits for SRO redevelopment for six months or until updated SRO regulation is passed.

In the meantime, if all goes according to plan, the Milshire will stand empty after Labor Day. But the Milshire saga isn't over—a rumored sale to controversial developer Mark Fishman still may be in the works, and the city has filed a legal complaint against the building for its extreme bed bug infestation.

It's amazing. I have lived in Logan Square for about 20+ years and have seen the neighborhood go through alot of changes. When I moved here No one wanted to live here it was gang and drug infested. It has only been the past 7-10 years or so that the community has been picking itself up. Since I have lived here there has always been "unsavory" people drinking and smoking weed at the Eagle, and as someone pointed out earlier they have probably lived here all their lives and will probably be here long after some of us are gone. There really is no more affordable housing in this community anymore.A lot of those people are homeless and really have no other place to go. I imagine they stay because Logan Square is all they know. I am sorry if you don't feel safe walking through the park with your girl if you feel that uncomfortable maybe you should take the long way around.

Hoyne and Armitage attack

Date: 08/19/2014
ChicagoPoliceBadge
A man, 45, was walking along the 2000 block of W. Hoyne Ave., near Armitage Ave., in Bucktown, when he was attacked at 10:45 p.m. Mon., Aug. 18.

The offenders were a group of four to five black 16 to 18 year-olds, according to Officer Janel Sedevic in News Affairs, Chicago Police Department. He was punched in the face and had his cell phone stolen.

Unable to call the police from the scene, he went elsewhere to call but refused medical attention, despite his bruises.

Area North Detectives are investigating.

Hayek: I agree, a little gang of these punks is going to go after a CCW carrier one of these times and it will be bad.

Then all the parents will cry and say their kids are quiet, good kids who have dreams of being president and they were a victim of a "white neighborhood" and a victim of blah, blah, blah and the person who was attacked will be branded an over aggressive racist if they are white/Latino.

Fact is, these kids have zero respect for anyone, including themself or each other. They are pretty much equalivent to rabid stray dogs. Most will end up in prison or dead from violence or drugs.... Not productive, self reliant, respectful citizens.

Take a look at Michael Brown in STL. I'm not saying the cop didn't potentially over react or do something criminal since I don't know.... But I am saying, if Michael Brown would have had any respect for anyone - cops, authority, the law - he'd still be alive.

What's the solution????? Do kids need an ethics curriculum rammed down their throat from 1-12th grade?

  • I'm wondering if we can make our neighborhood unattractive. Do not ever walk with headphones or your phone out. When asked the time, say you don't know. Walk en masse whenever possible. If you have a dog, gather your neighbors when you go dog walking and walk as a large group. If there are less people walking alone with an obvious phone to steal...maybe they'll give up ? Just an idea to throw out there.

Water Bill?

How much is your water bill? and how is your house?

  • One huge water-waster is a leaky toilet. My bills went up a great deal and it was because of a defective toilet valve that was wasting water 24 hours a day. Because the city bases the sewer charge on water consumption, you pay double for every gallon you waste.

Last year I spoke with the new renters and they assured me that they "had it....don't worry...we've got the garden under control." But, as the year has worn on....I've watched this lovely little garden become an over grown viney-jungle of sorts. It breaks my heart. I know the original owners would never have wanted that. I'm rarely on everyblock, but have been told that this garden has been mentioned before. Are there people that want to help go over and help clean it up? I have a set of keys, and the original owners gave me permission to help with it's up keep. I think I have given the renters enough time to show how much they care/ and how well they will keep up with the garden. I think it's time to see if we might be able to start a little group that might meet up once a month....have pot luck...and keep it clean. I'm unsure how to truly turn it into a "community garden" as I think it is really tied to the church somehow....but I'm sure there would be a way in the future to keep it a garden as long as it is cared for and have it then deeded to the local community. I just wanted to see how many would be interested to help and what weekend might work best for everyone. :)

operations between the hours of 8:00 P.M. and 8:00 A.M. within 600 feet of any
    residential building or hospital.
    (b) The limitation of this section does not apply to any construction, demolition or
repair work of an emergency nature or to work on public improvements authorized by a governmental body or agency.

  • Daniel.S Bucktown Resident

So it falls under the "improvements authorized by a governmental body or agency."
By that logic the city can work wherever they want and whenever they want without repercussion. Great.

Lose a bicycle wheel?

A bicycle wheel turned up in my yard yesterday. It doesn't belong to anyone who lives in my building. Did anyone have a bicycle wheel stolen recently? It has a few pretty distinctive characteristics, so let me know what it looks like if you think it's yours. I live near the intersection of Sacramento and Fullerton.

  • Any chance it is a dark blue rimland a treadles tire? Had one stolen late last week.

Over Night Blue Line Construction

Our bedroom face the Western Blue Line stop. We are used to sleeping through the standard train sounds, but last night, they began night construction and we were awake for the entire thing. Although loud, the actual machinery is tolerable. What kept us up was the intermittent sound of boards or something similar being thrown from the el into large metal dumpsters on the ground. Every time I dozed off for a second, BOOM! Anyone know how long this is supposed to last? Should they be throwing materials from the tracks? I am exhausted.

  • Can you go on the website and get more information about construction?

Sadly, city services has different 'rules' as I learned from 606. But file a complaint with the city anyway...everyone needs to sleep...

Stonework on the bottom part of building facades

Hi! Does anyone know what you call the stonework on the bottom part of building facades? A prime example is the new exterior on Cozy Corner. A lot of the new modern single family homes in the neighborhood have this stone on their front exterior too. I am looking to get something similar on my home but don't know what it's called or what kind of contractor to look for to do it. Any advice to head me in the right direction would be great! Thanks.

  • Melody Stanley Crafty/Techy Geek

I would call it "stone facing" but the actual material can be stone or realistic looking faux stone.

  • Melody Stanley Crafty/Techy Geek

With real stone you could go with a fixer mason, but there are also companies that specialize in stone facing.

  • DL Police officer

My family has had a masonry company in Ukrainian village since the 50's. I've never heard of a fixer mason but I'd be glad to take a look at it for you. 773 501 6930 if I can be of help let me know

Electricity provider

My new apartment allows me to choose an electric provider. Does anyone have recommendations (or warnings) they can share?

Current tenants in the unit use ComEd, so it may be easiest to stick with that, I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Joe

Interesting, i spot checked my bills FES charges in the Supply section is 5.5cents x KWh used .. no fees. Good to know about Intergys. Did anyone find a better supply deal than 5.5? I am not interested in real time. Thx

  • I am receiving a refund as well. Still waiting for the gift card, but it's only been about three weeks. We'll see!

When Jim Mitchell said, 'It's a developer's first shot across the bow, clearly designed to maximize the draw for high-value, national tenants," he was right. I've done this dance with developers a few times before and they'll compromise to come closer to "community" demands. But they do have a bottom line and odds are the alderman knows what it is. If you're really concerned what happens, you've got to organize a coherent group and have a stick and a carrot. The stick is usually bad publicity for the alderman and the carrot a hearty handshake. If Colon is stepping down, though, you need to pose a threat to his obvious successors who he might owe a favor and get them to endorse your development agenda (whatever that may be) publicly. But if all you care about is having your property values go up and having a few nice stores, save yourself the work. Logan Square is already on the hipster trajectory to gentrification and bound to be the next Buck Town or Lincoln Square. The question is, who do you love? Right now I'm on my knees praying that Avondale doesn't become hip and I'm glad that Hot Doug's is closing.

  • This is no longer part of Colon's ward.

One article (can't recall if it was DNAinfo.com or the Curbed.com article) did specifically name Waguespack as seeking community input.

Yes, Waguespack is quoted in the DNAinfo.com story:

“I've indicated to all potential buyers that a grocery store that can handle the narrow site is what we would push for on the site. It's hard to tell who will get the contract,” Waguespack said, echoing many resident complaints that the bustling neighborhood is lacking a conveniently located grocery store.

According to Paul Sajovek, Waguespack's chief of staff, developers at Terraco Real Estate Development & Management said they have a contract option to purchase the site and have issued preliminary concept plans to the alderman's office. Terraco manages a Trader Joe's in Evanston along with more than 100 other large lot markets.

Community meetings on the site's future will begin when the sale and a further preliminary plans are established, Sajovek said.

Lyndale and Drake Lot!

Hello Every Blockers! There is a plot of land on the corner of Lyndale and Drake and we want to take a poll to figure out if we should implement a community garden and/or a playground. I am working towards opening this lot to the community, I'd love some feedback on how we could best utilize this land. We don't want to see another year go by and not have access to this great space! We want to take responsibility for our community and keep Logan Square beautiful and provide a safe place for our families. If you have any questions or feedback please email me: laclaguardia@yahoo.com. Thanks! Happy Spring!

Anyone have info about Paradise Garden?

There is a very nice looking garden at the corner of Drake and Lyndale that has a sign calling it Paradise Garden. There are many nice plants there as well as a gazebo and some benches. However, it has a fence surrounding it and I've never seen it unlocked in the year I've been living near it. Does anyone know the story behind this place? If anyone knows the owner, is there any chance it could be opened up some time for people in the area to visit and/or help maintain it?

Ashley, I tried to message you, which I admit I have never done before so I could be doing it wrong, but it seems that I can't. If you could email me at nlcarlsen@cps.edu about setting up your rates and a plan, as I start school on Monday and would love to meet prior if this can work, I would appreciate it! Thank you! I look forward to hearing from you.
