Neighbors out of control. What to do?

The situation with my neighbors has gone from bad to worse in the last few months. The situation with my neighbors has gone from bad to worse in the last few months. They used to just be annoying and inconsiderate, but since this woman's kids were taken away and her husband went to jail, it's become the sketch-town square. Random people coming and going at all hours, gang fights between her place and the house next door in front of my house, more dogs in the yard by the day (or running loose in the street), more trash thrown in my yard, people yelling and screaming at each other endlessly. What can I do?!? We call the cops when something clearly illegal happens but it's rarely clearly illegal. They are basically squatting this house. It's owned by a complete slum lord who doesn't give a care what happens and is just holding on to the place till he can sell it for a huge profit. But it's the very people in the houses go are keeping the property values low.

I know I sound like a whiny white person and I'm sort of annoying myself. And really when it was just irritating I could deal. But it's at the point where it's getting dangerous and I'm hesitant to even go outside for a walk at night.

Suggestions other than "call 911" and call your alderman" welcome. We do call 911 and the alderman isn't going to do anything.

We had a similar situation (total nightmare) and despite your desire for other solutions, calling 911, engaging directly with CAPS and calling the Alderman will be the key to your success. You need to call 911 with any and all suspicious activity. Gang fights, loitering, excessive noise and intimidation are call worthy. Start a phone tree with your neighbors - the more people who call the greater your chances of a swift response. Even if they don't show, you are building a case against the property - ALWAYS ALWAYS state the exact address. The Alderman can then help you contact the landlord and encourage them to evict. If the tenants chose to try and stay, all the calls against their address will be used against them trying to do so. You have to take control of the situation or you are right, nothing will happen. Not calling 911 or pressuring your alderman will not give you the results you want. It felt like our action against this one problem property became a part time job, but after 4 months of our efforts, they are long gone and my block is quiet, safe, peaceful, and gang free. Good luck and stick with it!

I've recently become aware of several important pieces of mail that never got delivered to us and am trying to figure out the best way to address this and with whom (ie, call the post-office on California, track down my mail carrier, call the national branch??). After being in our location for 2 years, we've suddenly had mail returned to a couple of different senders with notices like, "address unknown," or they'll say they attempted 3 times, even though there was no notice and I was home each of the dates listed on the "attempt form." I have verified that the address was correct on the letters/packages that were returned. We still continue to get all our junk mail and ComEd bills as well as other peoples' mail, but now we're missing stuff. Any suggestions or input would be much appreciated!

  • Search the archives, try politely taking with your carrier, that should work until they get re-assigned, then repeat..I opted out of using the us mail, if it doesn't come via email or ups I don't want it.

I live in another zip code, but here's what I did. I went to my local post office and talked to the supervisor. The key is to get their name. Explain the problem and show them the notices, etc. Be polite and professional no matter what their attitude is as they will side with the postal employee. Even with all my proof, the supervisor had a million excuses. Then she'll tell you that she'll speak with the carrier. Chances are nothing will improve, then after a week or 2, call the national number. They will initiate something only if you have already spoken to the local post office and a supervisor. This is where they will ask you the name of the supervisor you spoke with. After doing this, our service finally improved. You can try doing this by phone but it's usually not possible as they busy the phones or don't answer them. Try doing it on your day off. HTH

We did the same thing many years ago with a feral guy - skin and bones - and now he's inside with us, healthy as all get out! He lived outside for many years, in a heated bed under our back porch, but we finally brought him in before a big snowstorm. Had to trap him, which was traumatic, but he adjusted quickly. Thanks for taking the time and effort to help him!

Does anyone have any information about the troupe of alcoholics who frequent – nay, who LIVE – at the corner of Fullerton and Western? One guy in particular actually sleeps in the doorway next to Quenchers and litters the sidewalk with plastic vodka bottles and snack bags (which I then go out and clean up because I'm sick of looking at them). On several occasions, I've seen these town drunks get into heated verbal spats with fellow day-drinking cohorts. One morning at the southbound Western Avenue bus stop, one of them flashed his buddies by pulling up his shorts in plain view of a bus full of morning commuters. That provocation nearly resulted in an altercation. Even worse, a few weeks back I had to call 311 because one of them had defecated all over the street corner and bus stop bench on the northeast corner. What's their story? Seems like they've been around a while with no plans to take their booze and snooze show on the road. I hesitate to call them homeless because I noticed one of them has nicer gym shoes than I do. One guy is so completely obliterated at all hours it seems a shame he hasn't been taken off the street for treatment. The city tells me the only recourse I have is to call 911, but even then the police can't remove them unless they go of their own volition. That doesn't seem right to me. Any suggestions or recommendations on how to get these people some help, or at the very least keep them from littering, flashing, and deucing it up all over our neighborhood?

Construction at the Corner of Talman & Medill?

Anyone know what's happening here? It's been vacant so long, I'm surprised to see it all torn up now. • One more question! I know it's been discussed elsewhere on EB, so I'm sorry to ask again, but what time is construction allowed to start in the morning? It can't be 6:30am... This is a 311 situation, right?

I asked to photocopy some of his company's information, so I could look at it more carefully. He said it was the private property of his company, and wouldn't allow me to copy any of it. I asked if he had any material to give me that I could look over, and he said he did not.

A few years ago I was slammed by someone coming to my door about energy companies, etc. As a result, I am leery, so I told this man that I would contact Citizens' Utility Board first, and then look into his company based on their opinion.

I emailed CUB about Direct Energy, and am awaiting a response. I will post the answer from CUB as soon as I hear what they have to say.

Thanks.

It's good that you are thinking about this now, before you have pre-existing conditions. I find most people don't consider it until it's too late. I personally believe the monthly payment for the insurance is worth the financial peace of mind in the case of an emergency.

eons ago i was a fanatically social and fiscal liberal who truly believed the disadvantaged could be raised up with a helping hand and that crime could be eradicated if we had mercy on criminals and led them to rehabilitation. i read the works of marx and lenin ... and alinsky, looking for hope but eventually saw through their empty, manipulative, failed philosophies.

i have seen 40-50 years of the failure of the liberal approach, the failure of protocols to treat, not punish, the criminal, to give away money to those who will not work.

i quit believing in that BS a long, long time ago. i grew up.

i no longer view crime, welfare, the economy, social policy, domestic and national policy, national defense, or much of anything else through the liberal kaleidoscope.

prison IS a deterrent ... for as long as the incarceration lasts. they come out, re-crime, return to prison. more deterrence. criminals come out, re-crime, die in the attempt. oh well, more deterrence.

i am an attorney and licensed private investigator. i am certified to, and do, train people to accurately shoot a firearm until an imminent threat on their life is stopped.

i believe that Themis holds the scales of justice in her left hand and the sword in her right for a reason. what is that reason? she is right-handed.

prostitutes fund pimps who fund groups that buy and sell drugs on a scale you cannot imagine, engage in sex trafficking, kill to protect their area and sales and secrets, buy sell and use illegal weapons. the whole money chain is toxic and corrupt - from the street to the kingpin.

someone very close to me was once saved from death by a coven of hookers, taken in by them while dying. the person survived and went to prison - rightly so. i, in turn, owe my life to that person.

so i do not hate prostitutes. my position is not ad hominem. my stance is pro law, pro safety.

so yes, absolutely. ENFORCE THE LAW. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CRIME.

  • Y'all are presuming a lot about folks you don't even know. I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex...

I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex workers out there who are in that situation; this is only to say that none of us know sh*t about their backgrounds or choices, so let's not fly off the handle talking about cutting off the drug-addled dragon's tails or whatever other sort of lame analogies for crime that we can come up with.

Gil, you haven't seen 40-50 years of a liberal failure. You've seen 40-50 years of a bipartisan failure to actually cooperate and work towards long-term and sustainable government solutions. But hey, I probably shouldn't expect too much from anyone who speaks of viewing the world merely through a "liberal" or "conservative" lens.

Hello Neighbors!

I am having a get together at my house tonight and need to purchase daily permit parking stickers for my friends who drive. I recently moved to LS, but when I lived in Lakeview I was able to walk to my Alderman's office to buy a bundle of the temporary stickers.

Now I am having trouble discerning which Ward I am part of, and whether Alderman offices in LS sell the stickers.

I purchased my vehicle city sticker at a Currency Exchange on Armitage, but from what I'm reading online it looks like you cannot purchase daily stickers from such places.

So, outside of driving to one of the 3 inconveniently located City Clerk Offices in the city, is there a way to purchase the stickers to have for tonight? (Online isn't an option for today but good for future use)

Thank you very much for reading and your suggestions!

  • Thanks for your helpful comments!

  • You can order online in the future (not for same day obviously.) It usually takes about a week for them to arrive. If you are comfortable with taking the El downtown, the blue line Washington stop is very close to City Hall. It's a lot easier than trying to find parking there.
