Silver Malibu

Some guys in a silver Malibu just tried getting buzzed into our unit. They kept buzzing every unit in the building, we live on Fullerton, has this happened to anyone else? I just checked with other tenants and it was no one they knew or were expecting.

  • Any packages that sit in your lobby?

  • I can't speak for the car, but this was happening at and around my building (Belden, near Kedzie) back in the summer. They would buzz all the apartments until someone buzzed them in and then break into any apartment they could. Apparently it happened at some other nearby buildings as...

Apparently it happened at some other nearby buildings as well and the landlord sent out a notice to everyone.

I'd recommend posting something on your apartment door for your neighbors to see. Don't buzz anyone in unless you know exactly who they are. Seems obvious, but I guess some people need a reminder.

Anyone catch the 1st Ward Debate last week?

I'm new to the First Ward...and found out about the debate too late...checking the candidates' web pages, i don't feel like I know much about who they are and why they are running.... (Moreno, the incumbent who has had a couple people knock on my door; Rhonda Locke, who once worked for Moreno now running against him; Anne Shaw, who has a couple police endorsements; and Andrew Hamilton, a red-headed lawyer with a facebook page.) Did anyone attend/watch the debate? Or have an opinion as to which is the best candidate (or if any have a chance against an incumbent?)

  • HawksSuperFan Moved in from the Burbs - happy to be in UV!

I was there last night too. I found it interesting Moreno's antics -if you watched him closely, he was waving his arms around and causing Ronda and Shaw to have to move to avoid getting swatted. Also he got red faced a few times.

The Moreno 'Peanut' gallery - I think I heard them called, must be the gears and tools of his machine and I thought they were rude and reflected poorly on Moreno.

I thought Ronda and Shaw were punchy and pretty informative, whereas Hamilton was stuck on his 'mobile app' - Overall, I thought Shaw eaked it out for tops, and probably has my vote.

BTW, It is funny on the comment in this thread on Moreno's visibility in the 1st Ward. Being still new to the ward, I cannot say how much he was seen before - but with all the signs down Western and the pricey mug-shot banners of Moreno's sneering gaze, it seems like there is a lot of compensating going on for years of not being engaged with the people of the Ward. I really don't care about plastic bags being banned - I care about my neighbors being able to send their kids to local well funded public schools and having good police response. How did he let our ward lose 2 police station under his watch?

  • it seems like if either Ronda or Anne would withdraw and endorse the other, there would be a better shot at unseating moreno...they seem to be somewhat friendly with one another (or at least united int heir dislike of the incumbent).

What the *!!##?? is happening?

Anyone hear about a woman raped by SAcramento and Schubert ? i just heard she was hit on the head with a gun and assaulted at 1pm???

  • There's a CAPS meeting next Thursday. Ald. Waguespack usually has a representative at CAPS meetings when he's not there himself. Here's the info for those that want to go and speak with the local police-

    Details: 7pm

Even when I moved a block out of his district and into Moreno's (who was completely dismissive and non-responsive to my concerns about trash, traffic and rodents), Waguespack's office was immediately on the case making things happen. And when a shooting outside of Los Recuerdos on Fullerton startled residents nearby, he worked to ensure the city's "good neighbor" policy was enforced in bringing the establishment to an abrupt close.

The guy genuinely cares about the city and the people in his ward - if you express your concerns, he will be on the case.

Internet Service Providers Logan Square

What service provider do you recommend in Logan Square? I know some are not available at my specific address like RCN. All I want is a basic internet connection. Preferrably less than 50 dollars a month. Thanks!

  • HawksSuperFan Moved in from the Burbs - happy to be in UV!

I have Comcast.. signed the deal with the devil I fear, but so far, it has been good here in UKV - but I'm a gamer. I think if you are looking for cheap, AT&T will be lower priced, but unless you can get real cable./ fiber, I think that DSL is too slow.

I've had them all, in different neighborhoods. For what it's worth, RCN was by far the best, most reliable, most responsive and most affordable of all options. They just don't service as wide an area as Comcast. I also had UVerse at a previous address and have a number of good friends who work for the company. Notoriously hegemonic past aside, I found the service refreshing and reliable and relatively trouble free for several years. Only downside now is they don't offer competitively high speed internet in many areas - mine included. They are rolling out faster speeds in some markets, but building out the infrastructure is taking time.

So, as others here have neatly broken it down, the only real choice for high speed internet for those of us in technologically underserved areas is Comcast. Even if it begs the question, what's better - reliably mediocre speeds or painfully unreliable high speeds? Comcast is also cheaper for the speed they deliver - when they actually deliver it. I am now working with credits for poor service that exceed a month's bill. But honestly, I would pay someone like RCN more to come in and actually do what Comcast continues to prove it can't.

Moreno's News Letter

I am receiving my 1st Ward Alderman (Moreno)'s newsletter for the first time.
The 1st one I received had THREE HUGE PICTURES of the Alderman (the 2nd only 2 and now with the third-back to THREE).
Take a look at Scott Waguespack-32nd Ward's newsletter and you will see what an informative newsletter actually looks like!!! and..what?..no pictures of him anywhere!
And Alderman, if you are reading this...when you responded to my post about your van being parked in a bus spot and 1/2 block of FoodSmart entrance..your response 'literally' threw your employee 'under the bus'. Disrespecting someone who works for you with that response? Shameful...and you represent the people in your ward????Really??

2600 N. Richmond - home burglarized while people home

My friend's house on the 2600 block of N. Richmond was broken into this week during the evening hours. The kids were upstairs asleep, while the babysitter watched TV on the first floor. They climbed up a back balcony and broke into through the 2nd floor into the master bedroom. The babysitter heard something, went upstairs and they ran out the way they came in. The same night their neighbors garage was broken into. Anyone else in this area hear of a crimes happening that aren't being reported? There has also been some strong arm robberies in the area (linked below). WTH!?!?!

Call the police if ANYTHING or ANYONE looks suspicious!

New bar/restaurant from Owen & Engine owners. Maybe.

Was walking on Milwaukee this morning and saw workers demoing the storefront just south of The Owl at 2515 N. Milwaukee. There was a large sign on the door that said the permit belonged to Bixi Brewery.

That was the beginning of my internet sleuthing (slow work day). I couldn't find any permits for that location online, but found info on Bixi Brewing, LLC - http://www.zacksprivate.com/offering/96806 The owners seem to be Bo & Arden Fowler, who after some more research turned out to be the owners of Owen & Engine. So, I am concluding that Owen & Engine v2 is coming to the main Logan Square thoroughfare.

Anyone else have any details?

It's strange to require a property owner to pay above and beyond property taxes, etc. to repair city property. I know the owner, and there's no way he'll be able to afford to pay that, nor should he have to. Notwithstanding the principle of maintaining city property, a PI/negligence lawsuit may cost the city @ $25k to settle vs. repairing the sidewalk at < $5k. That makes no sense. What are my neighbors' thoughts?

Alderman Defends Choice of Ex-Offender to Lead Political Group

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/02/us/alderman-defends-choice-of-ex-offender-to-lead-political-group.html

When Alderman Joe Moreno feuded recently with the Democratic committeeman in his First Ward constituency, he decided to form what he called an “independent Democratic political organization.”
To lead the reform-themed group, called 1st Ward First, Mr. Moreno tapped someone from a category of Chicagoans who he says need support: ex-offenders.

That someone, Juan Elias, pleaded guilty to the state charge of mutilation of election materials in 1997, after a failed run for Democratic committeeman of the 26th Ward. In 1986, he was convicted on a drug charge after the police caught him with more than three pounds of marijuana.

  • Joe Kopera Logan Square resident since 1961 (54 years in Jan)

As far as Johnny Elias is concern it is as if he never committed 3 different felonies, one reduced to a lesser charge since Governor Quin issued him a pardon for all three crimes. Keep in mind that Quin received letters of support from several local politicians. But even some of his friends still talk about the sh*t he does.

  • Penelope C Activist of all kinds.

Anne Shaw posted a notice on her personal page this morning indicating that a supporter had been threatened by Joe Muntaner (who is working for Moreno). Muntaner pointed at the individual wearing an Anne Shaw sticker and said (in front of others), at last night's debate: "there will be repercussions...

Muntaner pointed at the individual wearing an Anne Shaw sticker and said (in front of others), at last night's debate: "there will be repercussions for that." Another individual claims the same thing happened to them at the debate that was held in Wicker Park a few weeks ago. Shaw has also been personally threatened by Johnny Elias as has Ronda Locke who filed a formal complaint with the Board of Elections. Apparently desperate times call for desperate measures in the Moreno camp. Joe Must Go.

Ald Joe Moreno, crook or dummy?

sound off here and be sure to vote Joe out on Feb 24

  • Joe Kopera Logan Square resident since 1961 (54 years in Jan)

Nothing like going to the debate and having one of the alderman's thugs come up to you, shake you hand and then he tells you "THERE WILL BE REPERCUSSIONS" just because you are wearing a sticker for one of the challengers. I don't take kindly to threats.

  • Moreno lost my vote forever when he spoke out against the teachers strike. He seems like a shady guy all around. I do like his ideas for a dedicated bike lane on Milwaukee, but that's not enough to sway me, not to shake the feeling that he's smarmy. I hope both of them are forced into a runoff and lose.

I have heard aldermanic candidates bashed in this forum for accepting PAC monies. Here's the truth, candidates scrape together money to run their campaign, especially when they are not an incumbent. Many times, PACs will go to the website, click the link and donate. Boom-a Pac has supported a candidate. Is this wag the dog behavior? Does this mean that that candidate is tethered to the PAC and will do their bidding if elected? Of course not! Anyone can donate to a fund. Let's look at the alternative-a new candidate has received a PAC contribution. This PAC is controversial. Should they spend time, energy and resources processing refunds of much needing funding to run the campaign?,... or just hope that common sense will prevail when people are perusing through the campaign contributors. UMMMM-common sense maybe? And seriously if this is the only negative thing you hear about a candidate it's probably because there is nothing else bad to say about them.

When a liquor establishment contributes to a fund does it mean the candidates an alcoholic? This is tantamount to assuming that a candidate who takes money from Walgreens is seeking prescription drugs illegally. Crazy right?!

I encourage you skeptics to go to the state board of elections candidate contributions. Look at who is accepting money from whom, and then imagine you are a conspiracy theorist and want to write bad things about the candidate based on contributors. Voila! You have lots of ammo. You could fabricate stories like crazy because, chances are, there are contributors that are not perfect,... or that have enemies, ...or that do not conform to certain ideals Don't let these forums and this bashing dictate your vote. Educate yourself and make your own decisions!! ...and if you read this-thanks for the few minutes of your time have a great day!

  • Emily, wow, I wish what you say could be so, but the sad state of reality in IL is that the incumbents protect their status completely and absolutely. The whole system is designed to keep them in power and create very high barriers for challengers.

This is where there are no differences between Democrats or Republicans - they all want to keep themselves in office and have a never-ending list why we should ever have Campaign Limits.

  • You can take the high road or the low road where PAC donations are concerned ... problem is many incumbents have lost their way just following the Mayor's road, some of them for decades.

Gas or Sewer smell?

There has been construction going on around Kimball and Palmer for the past week and a half. Today we noticed a strong sent of what could be gas in our apartment. The upstairs neighbors have the smell as well. It seems to be coming from the drain in the basement. Our landlord received a message from Peoples stating that other people around the area have had similar complaints and that the smell is not gas but a combination of paint thinner and ammonia in the sewers. The fire department also came out and checked out the situation and said the same thing. Has anyone else had any issues with this smell?

  • Yes...dry water traps..pour water down it..worked for me...on;y I used buckets...

  • i had this same problem a few days ago and a few buckets of water with some concentrated odor eliminator worked for me. another trick i learned from a friend is to put boric acid around the drains to stave off oriental roaches (waterbugs).

My family is currently in a nanny share, and found our share family on Craigslist (of all places!), because at the time I was looking, npnparents.org was mostly populated with families looking for nanny shares east of the expressway.

Recommendations for Sturctural Beam Repair/Replacement

I've got a bad main structural beam in my basement. It needs to be replaced. Has anyone had this done? Can you recommend a company? I'd also appreciate a ballpark of how much it cost if you don't mind sharing. I know it isn't going to be cheap. Thanks.
