lost ID and credit cards

My "wallet" is a bunch of cards tied together with an elastic. I lost it near Parson's chicken (the corner of Armitage and Humboldt Blvd) last night at about 12:30am. Please get back to me if you have any information. Thank you.

  • My "wallet" was FOUND!!! A wonderful neighbor looked up my name on Facebook, sent me a message, and met me at Foodsmart to return my stuff. I am so grateful.

Blue Can - Recycle Service

A quick neighborhood survey: How often does the blue cans get emptied in your neck of the woods?

As of late it's been erratic in my neighborhood--sometime up to takes 3 weeks to get collected. I call 311 and I am impressed that it gets picked up within a day or 2. Does anyone have insight why they don't come on a weekly basis? And how it can be set up to do so?

  • Art

Mine are picked up every other Monday. It shifts to the Friday before or Tuesday when a holiday falls on the Monday collection day

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

U are a lucky guy if yours are on schedule like clockwork.

In EGP it is utter chaos. Garbage can be strewn all over the alley and S&S people not pick up blue and black on their pickup day.

Some wards are managed well and some not.

Hi all,
I need some help. In July, we had a new alley put in. My house is located on the corner of the alley and the street. On July 26th, one of the workers backed into my iron fence with his bobcat. My boyfriend was home at the time and went out to speak with them. He got the name of the company hired by the city of Chicago to do the work. It was Summit construction. He then called Summit and tried to get them to fix it. At first the secretary was very nice, and seemed to be trying to help him. Saying, she'll pass off the info and someone will contact us. Weeks went by, multiple calls and now no responses. We then called the police to get an assessor out to report it. Now again, weeks, and no responses. Multiple calls, and emails and we are getting no one to help.
Our fence is now rusting, and the gate door is not closing properly since the damage. It is now only getting worse.
Can anyone help us? Give us advice as to what to do. At this point, I am at a loss.
Thanks!
Kate

  • I know Sumit well, having managed a few of their CDOT jobs. Make sure you're going after the right company, because they are spelled Sumit...

The correct email for them is sumitconstruction@gmail.com. They use this for everything...so someone is seeing your complaints. If you're getting no response from their project manager (do you know who it is?), let me know and I can call the owner or his son. They do a lot of alley and sidewalk work for CDOT.

Anyone had luck with antique window repair?

have some of those big old windows with original glass that are in good to fair condition but sticky / painted shut...one has missing panes. has anyone been able to find a reasonable repair source? (if it gets to be $600 or more per windows, it kind of forces you to go with new ugly windows, which is a shame as these windows have survived for more than 100 years) and do all the companies take the windows completely out to do the repairs or do any leave them in?

  • I don't know of anyone that does the repair on site, but Gillman's Ace Hardware (773-252-5886) on Milwaukee Ave. (near Congress Theater) will replace the panes if you bring the window in. Maybe they know of someone who can do the work on site.

  • i've been over there a few times. will ask the owner next time i'm in.

Five Point Holistic Health is a community acupuncture clinic located on Fullerton just west of Kedzie that opened in May of 2014. I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

I remember that day and I had no reason to be or park on California. There is no picture printed on the ticket or online that I can see and obviously I never got a hard copy on my windshield. I'm contesting..not sure if I'll get anywhere as the only proof I have is some text messages setting up to meet with my client at that time. I suppose she can vouch for me but not sure if that even has any weight. Anyone gotten a similar ticket lately? Just wondering if a cop is running around giving bogus tickets or if maybe my license plate number got transposed or something with the actual car at fault. Really frustrating!

Years ago when we first moved to the city we got a ticket for no city sticker our first week. The law is you have 30 days to obtain one (at least it was back then). We contested by mail with evidence of our least out of town, our new lease in Chicago and moving receipts and we lost.

I was so livid, I contacted Pam Zekman at CBS 2 and our case was one featured on a news story about bogus tickets. We ended up having to sue the city for our money back. We ended up winning our case and they also had to pay all our court costs. My wife was unemployed at the time so we had nothing but spare time to fight it but it did take a lot of time and effort on our part. They simply bank on people being too busy to fight tickets.

Moral of the story, even the ALJ's in this city are dirty and there's no guarantee they'll reverse your ticket even if you're right, but definitely fight in person.

Airplane Noise Complaints

Has anyone else noticed the increased number of loud airplanes overhead over the past couple months? I'm no expert in aviation, but it seems unnecessary that there is such an increase in noise pollution from these planes when Buck town/Wicker Park is ~15 miles from the airport. What gives? Does anyone have ideas on how to make our voice heard?

  • I've been noticing the same thing as well. It doesn't really bother me, but was scratching my head. My guess was a change of flight path. Remember 15miles isn't very far when your going a few 100 mph

  • Jon Banks supervisor banks

Is the new runway at O'Hare in use yet? Perhaps that's the cause of the increased airplane noise

Rahm's 1st jumbo LED billboard going up right now

Rahm's 1st jumbo LED billboard going up in Bucktown today.
This was billed as an income-generator for Chicago but turns out its not.

If you're not happy about it- remind him by voting him out on Feb 24th.
In the meantime, if you live by one of these, its time to order room-darkening curtains!

view pics here: http://imgur.com/a/xwlHu#0

  • Agree with No yolk. Rahm has no problem putting extremely bright signs in the neighborhoods, but thinks they don't belong downtown because of light pollution. Why is it light pollution downtown, but not up here? There are plenty of nice skyline views up here that are now blocked by ugly signs.

  • They put one in at Milwaukee and Division, while perhaps not city sanctioned, the thing is bright. If they had some intelligence about them, where they were like your phone an dimmed in the dark as not to blind you, they would be tolerable in my eyes (no pun intended). Instead they are 100% bright all day every day.

Anyone know what was going on near Kedzie/Altgeld this morning? I saw 9 police cars outside of 2348-ish N. Kedzie while walking my dog around 7:45 this morning.

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

  • margv Margaret

We had a problem finding someone to put a cap on last fall, same issue with small project. I got Lindholm roofing to come out, it was a really quick job ended up costing just under $300 I believe- more than I thought it should've but they were really the only people I could get out anytime soon. They were prompt and professional and worked out well.

  • Thanks so much, Margv! We used them in the past, as few years ago, and I don't know why we didn't think to try them again.

I had seen a police car texting while driving. The police officers were probably from 13th District or 14th District. I called them out on texting and driving, informing them of the dangers it can potentially cause for bikers and other motorist. They pull up next to me lower the window and the female officer in the passenger seat told me to "Mind my f*cking business" I replied "He's texting and driving" The male officer driving swerving on the street and talking to me while driving suggested that "I was hating" I replied with, "I'm not hating, it's dangerous out here" He replied "THE LAWS DON'T APPLY TO US" at that moment I looked into the car and responded "We're all humans regardless of uniform" The female officer kept yelling but I'm not going to waste my time and give the cops a reason to lock up another Latino in Chicago.... "The laws don't apply to us" the police officer's words are now forever tainted into my brain.

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

Donation pick-up?

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). Anybody know of anything? If not I guess I resort back to Free Stuff (and accompanying flakes) on CL and the Mysterious Alley People and forgo my tax deductions.
