Answer from Alderman Mary O'Connor

An ordinance was passed by the City Council yesterday which further restricts the power of the City Council's Inspector General to investigate alleged wrong doing on the part of alderman. In this day and age with the City Council's history of sordid corruption, if anything the Inspector General's powers need to be expanded not diminished. For reasons unknown, our own 41st Ward Alderman Mary O'Connor voted for this ordinance. As our public representative I think Alderman O'Connor needs to explain to the people who elected her as to why she voted for this ordinance which will only serve to protect alderman accused of wrong doing.

But to get back to EP6's original question...why did MOC vote for the ordinance? Perhaps it has something to do with political analyst and attorney Russ Stewart's observations about MOC's "underwhelming" performance as alderman. He observes poignantly that she has "not bucked Emanuel on a single City Council issue." http://www.russstewart.com/articles/2014/07-16-2014.html. It's obvious she believes Emanuel will be re-elected, and therefore wants to be one of his many Yes (wo)men.

When MOC first began to run for alderman, we invited her to our home to voice our personal neighborhood problems. Talking to her she looked like a deer in headlights. She had, personally, told me that she had NEVER intended on running for alderman but was forced to do so because the guy who was supposed to run (whom she was working for) had won his election against our previous alderman for state office. She wasn't qualified then and she's not qualified now. When you voice your displeasure with something she says or does, she will block your e-mail address (which she has with us) so you don't get her newsletter and you can not have a paper trail to show how many times you've contacted her on a particular problem. And to speak with her in person? If she see's your name on the list and she doesn't want to meet face to face with you, your name is either eliminated from the list or put on the very bottom and she skips out before she can get to you. We have been trying to meet with her now for a year and we have yet to be able to speak to her. After making numerous appointments with her, they have eliminated our names off the meeting list 2 times and has cut her personal meeting time short 5 times before she got to us. She is an Emanuel puppet. She handles her office the same way Emanuel handles his.

Anyone recommend a reliable cab service from Edision/Norwood park to O'Hare. Most cabbies don't like this short route.

  • I still say Flash is better than Uber from EP to ORD. I've tried both. I usually pay $18-19 early am with no traffic. They are totally reliable

  • Checker and Yellow cabs HATE short rides from O'hare. I've taken them a million times and every single time they get pissed on short rides... they are REQUIRED by law to take you as the Dispatcher always tells them... What I usually do, if they are extremely rude about the...

I've taken them a million times and every single time they get pissed on short rides... they are REQUIRED by law to take you as the Dispatcher always tells them... What I usually do, if they are extremely rude about the ride, i don't tip and report them to the consumer number they all have listed in the back seat! If they're pleasant and deal with it (which they do get a ticket to get back in front of line if they're back within an hour) I tip well and thank them.

found iPad

Found iPad on Harlem Ave near North Shore Ave. on Monday morning. It is password protected, so cannot open anything up to try and identify the owner. If you lost one and you can identify it, please reply here.

  • If you contact an apple store they may be able to trace it to the owneer if the app was set up on it.

  • Keep it charged and on if you have a charger that fits it. If the owner has "find my ipad" on it they'll be able to trace it.

  • myrna 60645

If you go on the apple web site and enter serial number on the back bottom of the ipad it can tell you who the iPad is registered too. Hope it gets to it's owner.

Mail delivery issues

Is anyone having issues with their mail delivery? I am getting pieces of other peoples mail delivered along with mine, and now I know that my mail is not being delivered properly as I received a past due notice from ComEd for a bill I never received. I always take the wrongly delivered mail to the correct house if close by, or to the mailbox for proper delivery. I have complained to the post office and would encourage others to do the same if they are having issues as their errors are going to cost the community in late fees and declining credit scores.

  • Edison Park CJM EP Neighbor

Another overdue bill received. If you are also having issues please call the United States postal service at 1 800 275 8777 and file an official complaint in addition to calling the Norwood park post office.

Hit and Run Downtown EP

Hoping someone saw or heard something involving a hit and run on a parked car Tuesday September 23 during the day? Car was parked on 6400 block N Olympia between Olmsted and NW Highway.

When I came out to car around 530 pm someone had crushed the back bumper and lights of car and didn't leave a note or contact info. They had to be going extremely fast out of the alley or off Olmsted which is scary given all the pedestrian traffic

If you saw or heard anything I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks

If we have to have a majority petition of neighbors to have a block party, the school should have to do the same with ALL homes and streets involved. I'm fed up with the Edison Park Elementary students, faculty, and parents and the Res High School students using my yard as if they owned it and no respect for the ACCUAL owners. And when they are asked to use the sidewalk, all I get is foul mouthed adults and students with rude comments and their trash all over my yard.

  • Got it! You're right, it is. Thank you for providing us with this information.

  • This thread is a discussion about the 5k. Please start a new one to argue arbitrary neighborhood boundaries. Thanks

The "gulley" fenced in?

Does anybody know the whole story behind the now fenced-in area of the vacant lot at the end of the 7700 block of Clarence Ave. where it adjoins the 6200 block of N.Ozanam Ave? This is the block that I grew up on. We always called this vacant lot "The Gulley". Don't know who originally came up with that moniker, but all the neighbors have called it that through the years. Anyway, there were once some really nice big old trees on that lot, and a sandbox where we used to play as kids (great) and we even froze the area over during the winder to play ice hockey on it! (There was a fireman who lived around there that set us up with a fire hose to tap the hydrant right there.) Those were the days! And i know those days are long gone. Anyway-- fast forward to today. The area has now very recently been FENCED IN. It's super-ugly now. I know this lot is actually owned by the people in the house up on the hill off of Canfield, so it's really (technically) just their big "back yard" but it's got to be the most unusual city lot in all creation. We got lucky all though the decades because the same woman owned that property all that time and did nothing with it. And, that empty lot really MADE that block because it was a very nice quiet enclave. Ideally (in my mind, anyway), the city would buy that lot back and turn it into a park. But now, instead, the people who now own that property cut all the trees down, turned over all the dirt with dump trucks, made a mud pit out of it and now fenced it in! As a result, the poor people on Clarence Ave across from this lot now have 1/2 width of a street that you can't even turn around on with your car. This has got to hurt property values. Does anybody know anything about the people who now own this house on the hill plus the lot and/or know anything about this situation at all?
Just curious as I mourn the death of "The Gulley"...

  • It was for sale maybe 4 years ago. Someone obviously bought it. Strange lot to do much with due to lack of alley access. I'll have to drive back over there to see what is going on.

Train crossing gates and signals

Does anyone know why the crossing gates were down and the signals going continuously for over 30 minutes in Edison Park yesterday around 4pm?
I drove around forever until I finally ended up driving down to Cumberland and Touhy to get around the mess.

  • This is the answer I got from the email that i sent to the 41st ward office:
According to Union Pacific, Wednesday evening important railroad equipment was tampered with somewhere between the Edison Park area and Park Ridge. This action caused the gates at each crossing to malfunction, thus creating a headache for many motorists in the area. Union Pacific, the ICC and the local authorities are all investigating this matter.

  • Holly Holly

They have been trying to repair those gates for weeks! I'm in the condo building right there and have to listen to the trains blowing their horns during all this!

O'Connor claims Victory?

Alderman O'Connor is bragging she was key in American Airlines eliminating the noisy MD-80 aircraft. I have news for for you, American started reducing the fleet of MD-80's in 2012. In 2013 they got rid of 39 in favor of 737-800's. Nice try.

  • Cliff in Edison Park Edison Park resident

I was done with O'Connor when she held the town hall meetings about the flooding and had all these officials there to tell all of us flood victims that it was OUR fault that our homes flooded. She proved she had no idea what so ever on what to do or how to deal with people.

  • Question: Do we REALLY need 50 aldercreatures? Really? They are here to represent our neighborhood, but yet only a few actually get off their dead....and ring a doorbell or two to hear...I'm sorry, listen to what we have to say. To listen to our concerns, however, I have lived in...

Question: Do we REALLY need 50 aldercreatures? Really? They are here to represent our neighborhood, but yet only a few actually get off their dead....and ring a doorbell or two to hear...I'm sorry, listen to what we have to say. To listen to our concerns, however, I have lived in Norwood Park for over 15 years and I NEVER....yes, never had my aldercreature ring my doorbell. Mary said Harlem was going to be paved to perfection. HA! The truck and cars still use it as a highway. Some speeding by at 60mph! The trucks bounce around because the sewers caps are not even with the new pavement. Our alley has pot holes in it and flood every time....yes, every time it rains. I have an example of how the city works....had a sewer in front of the house that kept flooding the street. I reported every time it did..FOR THREE YEARS! Then they Streets and San) came out and said everything was fine. No blockage. Then it literally rained the next day only to flood again! Another twelve months of calling and again S&S came out. This time I had the guy go into the sewer to find that it was blocked. Now...so far it hasn't flooded the street. My point is no one in the city that works listens to us taxpayers! NO ONE....and the airport noise??....HA! heard the FAA said they were not going to do another study because the first and only one was sufficient....and Rahm said he wasn't gonna change anything anyhow....so again...WHO IS ON OUR SIDE??.....let me take a guess.....

Water Bill

I'm not metered and received a water bill over $400. Anyone know why? Usually it's around $160, twice a year. Did I miss a notice? Appreciate any input. I'll call the city tomorrow, but I'm not looking forward to it. A bit frustrated with how 'things,' for lack of a better word, are being run around here lately. Maybe I'll just double up my concern about the plane noise and the water bill and see if the Alderman/woman answers.

  • Cliff in Edison Park Edison Park resident

have two neighbors who do that as well as park their cars over the sidewalk so you have no choice but to walk in the street. I've called the police on both situations and they do nothing.

  • if the police come and nothing happens, call again and tell the operator that police came and left, no citation was written and the problem still exists. The second call usually gets a ticket.

Hi, Just wanted to say that whoever came up with the idea of those containers for doggy bags is a genius!!!!! Now, if we can only remind the dogs owners to pick up after their pooches!!!!!!!

Yes, Thank you to that person! Once in a great while I find I've needed an emergency extra!

  • Cliff in Edison Park Edison Park resident

the man walks an older yellow lab named Sandy. He's usually dressed in camo. He stocks them himself as do we. Whenever we have an over abundance of bags, we take handfuls down with us when we walk our dog. We don't feel the stocking should fall onto one person. In fact, we should ALL save our bags and stock them whenever we can.

  • PRW EP since 1990

I agree, I hope that whomever takes a bag at one time or another thinks of restocking a few themselves so we always have an emergency supply and never takes for granted there are bags readily available in the park for their use.

internet Service Providers OTHER than AT&T??

Our internet AT&T service is horrible, cutting out once every 5 minutes or so. I was even warned this by the AT&T installer, that Edison Park was a "spotty zone" (but dumb me went ahead with it anyway). I know from some neighbors that this seems to be a common issue with AT&T around Edison Park (at least in some parts)--is anyone using another service provider they can recommend? I keep getting marketing mail from Clear, but I've also heard that their service is spotty, depending on your location. Any suggestions?

  • I've been in Norwood Park for a few months now but have had spotty Comcast. About 5-6 outages lasting from 20min to a couple hours.

Anyone else have good luck with Clear?

  • PRW EP since 1990

We cancelled our cable service almost two years ago and couldn't be happier with the variety and amount of channels still available, but we kept AT&T for Internet at a deal rate. Surprisingly, we received a letter shortly after stating they recognize our area's service is lacking and would lowered our rate; yes, for one month, only to raise it back up a little the next - what a racket!

Alderman Election

I've had one person stop by asking for a signature to get on the ballot for Alderman. It's a tough decision to sign or not. We, myself included, need to do research before signing. Our neighborhood deserves someone honest and reputable, and someone we know before signing just to get them on the ballot.

  • You can ask questions about what the candidate's platform is before signing. Those asking for signatures should know that answer. Or maybe you'll get lucky and it will be the candidate going door to door. Or ask where the campaign headquarters is and go there to sign and ask your questions directly to the candidate.

  • PRW EP since 1990

I would rather not sign someone on the ballot I've never heard of or know, but never considered as a candidate. I say let the petitioners do their work and circle back around to some who may want to check out a potential candidate; how long and in what condition have they lived in their community, setting what examples, see if people are willing to tell both likes and dislikes. See how you feel about what you hear and decide for yourself based on your own concerns.
It may do some good as early as the petition stage, so we can hope to end up with some really viable candidates running to decide upon. I've often been too dismayed over politics, but when I'm aware of issues I feel strongly about, like many people, it ignites my passion to "yea or nay". I hope we have some great choices and well-rounded candidates this election.

suspicious landscapers

Anybody seeing "landscapers" knocking on doors during the day? They knock on doors, don't leave pamphlets, then leave. They seem like they are just casing houses. We've gotten them a few days in a row.

  • Also watch others, such as any one knocking on a neighbors door, making deliveries, cable installers, delivering flyers, etc.

  • as IC You said, get the info and call the cops that you see suspicious people around. call on anything you see and these outsiders will think twice about hanging around in the neighborhood.
