Pepper Spray

Is it legal to carry and use pepper spray in Chicago? After the recent L robberies that have been in the news, I am thinking of getting some.

Rude Neighborhood People with Dogs

7-12-420 Removal of excrement. No person shall appear with a pet upon the public ways or within public places or upon the property of another, absent that person's consent, without some means for the removal of excrement; nor shall any person fail to remove any excrement deposited by such pet. This section shall not apply to a blind person while walking his or her guide dog.
Any person found to have been in violation of this section shall be fined not less than $50.00 nor more than $500.00 for each offense.

I am tired of stepping in your dogs feces when I mow my lawn and fed up with stepping in it when I go outside my gate on the sidewalk. I plan on making sure that any person found violating this City of Chicago Law will be punished in accordance with the fines stated above. Don't say you haven't been warned.

Yesterday I was walking my two 85 pound monsters and one suddenly dropped a load on someone's front lawn. I immediately picked it up, making sure to get every bit of it. The lady that lived there came out and thanked me for picking it up. I said I would NEVER leave this here! I hate when other people are irresponsible and lazy. I usually bring an entire roll of bags with me when we head out. I try to have them do their business in an alley or the park so it's not messing up a beautifully manicured lawn, but they are dogs and you really can't control it. I won't even throw the bags away in someone else's garbage can either. I wait until I get home or I'll throw it in a public garbage can at the park.

Thank You to all the responsible dog parents out there!

I like that someone put makeshift containers around Olympia park that hold plastic bags. It's beyond me why people don't pickup after their dogs.

Contractor / Handyman needed for drywall job

We are looking to enclose a loft space to create an additional bedroom on the 2nd floor of our home. There is already a closet in the space, so I think it would be a fairly small job, just putting up two walls and minor electrical work to move a ceiling fan. Afraid it's too small for a larger contractor, although after the bedroom is complete our next project is to completely finish the basement, so if they do a good job on the loft, could lead to the basement project. Flexible time frame... we are in Edison Park. Any recommendations?

Overhill to become one-way southbound

Overhill ave will become one-way southbound from N/W Hwy to Owen in the near future to reduce traffic on Overhill.
If you'd ask me, it should be one-way from N/W Hwy to Touhy. Why is Edison Park free of one-way streets anyway? Cars constantly getting mirrors broken off because of two cars squeezing though.
Please don't say people are going to go faster if it was. Cars speed down here constantly at 40mph plus. And by the way, Get off the cell phone while driving!!!

  • Totally agree that there should be a majority of one-way streets.

I agree that more streets should be one way. I inquired a few years back with the previous alderman and they were against it. They said you had to get not only your street to agree but the surrounding streets, and do traffic studies yadayadayada. Our old neighborhood had 90% one way streets and it was great. Our street was even one way south for a block and then switched to one way north to prevent cut-thru traffic. I have seen more cars hit because the streets are so narrow, and if you park with your wheels on the curb you risk a ticket. I would love to know what Overhill had to do to get this change.

  • Well the alderman never informed the other streets over of the change. Not sure how it got approved.

Article from Taste of Park Ridge - 200 teens gather and attack a man

I know this is Park Ridge, but it seems to be the norm for any fest in the area. Every year during Edison Park Fest, teens gather at Olympia Park in such great numbers it's unbelievable. Last year, a few kids threw beer cans at us while we were sitting in our front yard. and later damaged our fence. They also overturned the large dumpster by the Park District building. I hope it's controlled this year. This article is disturbing - http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/26034602/teens-charged-with-attacking-man-near-taste-of-park-ridge

My family and I just moved to Edison Park in the Spring from Lincoln Park and I can't imagine this festival being as bad as the festivals in my old neighborhood. We had to deal with most of the manageable complaints on this thread INCLUDING prostitution, muggings, stabbings and drug dealing. I think that if neighbors are concerned about people trespassing onto their properties that weekend, they should put up "No Trespassing" signs. Maybe even include" Your Activity May Be Recorded" on the signs. They should also leave their outside lights on at night even the light in your livingroom so they think you're up. Talking to the kids (in a civil and respectful manner) that are just hanging out before they get out of control may also help. I'm not for or against this festival since I've never attended or experienced the nuisance that comes with it. I'm just saying that things can be a lot worse and I hope the organizers can better control the crowd before things get a lot worse as time goes by.

Wanted: TV Antenna Installer

I have decided to ditch my $100 cable bill and just get an antenna instead - nothing beats free HD TV. I'm looking to get a TV antenna installed on our roof - or possibly in our attic. I want someone who is experienced and knows what they are doing. I don't want any leaks in our new roof, I don't want the antenna blowing off or bending in the wind, and I want the antenna cable properly grounded.

Any recommendations?

Based on my research, there is no such thing as an HD specific antenna. Antennas are still exactly the same as they always were - they will pick up whatever signal is being broadcast. What really changed is that TVs need to have a tuner to interpret the new digital data that are now in that signal. All modern TVs can do this. 'HD' is just something antenna marketers put on the box to sell their antennas. With my "HD" antenna, I get about 30 channels, too. (Some are in HD, some aren't, but all are digital.) The major stations have several sub-channels with different content, which is really great. They are listed on my TV for example as 2.1, 2.2 etc.

The problem with CBS is that it is being broadcast on VHF. All the other Chicago channels are broadcast on UHF. Most indoor antennas that you can buy at places like Best Buy will only pick up UHF channels. Or maybe they will get the VHF, too, but not very well. That is the case with that Terk antenna I bought from Best Buy. The Terk cost about $50 several years ago. The new Flatwave antenna I bought at Home Depot was only $30-35. The Flatwave gets CBS pretty well. (CBS signal strength on Terk = 30% vs. Flatwave = 70%). But reception of WTTW got a little worse. (WTTW on Terk = 90% vs. Flatwave = 70%). I have this antenna plugged straight into the TV and just hung on the wall next the window. It is about as thick as a piece of card stock. It is possible that if it was on the second floor (instead of the first) that reception would be even better.

Sometimes in cities, particularly in high-rise areas, the signal will get bounced around between the buildings so much it causes interference. So even though you may have a strong signal it is garbled. This is why a signal booster may not help you in a city.

An outdoor antenna will always get better reception.

I would try the Flatwave - it is cheap and easily returnable if it doesn't work out for you!

  • Here are a couple of links - one for the Winegard Flatwave, and another link for a virtually identical antenna that also gets great reviews, the Mohu Leaf.

Everyblock Email Updates

Has anyone else stopped receiving the daily EveryBlock updates which come to the email? If so, do you know how to start receiving them again?

  • Check your settings...top right corner where your moniker appears ( Edison Park CJM) you will see an arrow for a drop down menu. Here, you can see what areas you have chosen to follow. Also, verify that your email address is displayed correctly via the "manage your account settings". Otherwise, I would check with EveryBlock.
    Hope this helps...

  • I'm still getting the daily emails.
    - Go to https://chicago.everyblock.com/account/email/.

I want to warn you of the HORRIBLE experience I had here.
Charles the person who held himself out as owner and master clockmaster apparently has no idea what he is doing, and on top of that he is rude and aggressive. I was scared for my safety!

I brought my clock in for repair because my regular repairman was out of town. Charles charged me nearly $500, said he knew what he was doing, promised me he was very experienced, and yet I had to go back several times and he still could not get it to work. Furthermore, he damaged the exterior! Charles also told me if I paid cash he would waive the tax - I now find out he couldn't charge tax on service. He's a total deceiver!!

I've now had the clock checked by my regular guy who confirms Charles does NOT know what he is doing. Charles apparently washed the mechanics of the clock, which destroyed them, and then bent pieces!! The regular repairman can replace the mechanics for less than half what Charles charged for his butchering job!!

After this experience, I read several other accounts similar to mine online. I hope this account prevents you from going here and having the same horrible experience!!

  • Sure - the clock repair guy I have used and who has now looked at this clock and determined the damage Antique Watch & Clock World did is: Mr. Horst Heck (630) 562-4189. He is great.

  • Amy

Great review - you should really put that on yelp and report to the bbb so more consumers see it when looking for a service. Also Angie's list if you happen to be a member

Something isn't right

I think I am seeing ladies of the night coming out of 2 different buildings on the East and the West side of Northwest Hwy, just North of Devon. Has anyone else noticed anything? I don't want to call the police in case I'm wrong. Something definitely isnt right, dont know what to do, or how I feel about this.

  • I think CGR has been shut down...just me, if you see unsavory or suspicious behavior, I, as a fellow member of your neighborhood, would appreciate it if you report it to the police.

  • Anyone seeing suspicious behavior should also report it here, as you have done. The rest of up are then alert to whatever it is. Do not listen to the ostrich with his head in the ground.

Burglary near Talcott & Dee

A house on the 1700 block of Talcott was burglarized this morning. The police told me someone kicked in the front door sometime between 10:30-2:00 while the residents were at church. Pretty gutsy to do it on a busy street during the day.
All I can say is trim your trees and bushes. Make sure people can see your door from the street.

I was worried all night that they would burn my house down. Although I am not fond of fireworks, I can put up with them if they are not being aimed in my direction or used to deface my property. I am a senior and I know that if I was younger and male I would not be targeted by these people. The father is a Niles cop so they think that they can do whatever they want. And unfortunately they are right. I did call 911 last night and was told they would send someone out, but they never did. The police protection in this neighborhood sucks. I have contacted the alderman a few years back, but got a response to call the police. Do I have to sell my house and move in order for the harassment to stop. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Fireworks are part of 4th of july... I don't agree to ppl shooting off over homes, recklessly, however, if they are responsible adults being careful (having hoses on and nearby), and not shooting where there are many homes, then I think it it can be done. The park district displays have cars, homes, etc. all around as well, so there is a chance of starting a home on fire anywhere fireworks are being lit.... the object is to be safe... have hoses and buckets of water nearby and keep the kids at a safe distance with adults supervising at all times... as for the dogs.. well i have had a dog who didn't like fireworks... not much you can do.. our vet prescribed a mild tranquilizer, just like ppl give dogs who don't travel well. Dogs can hear fireworks from near and very far, so they are going to get upset regardless of how close by they are.

As far as security of police, i agree but can't blame them... talk to the mayor about hiring more police instead of relocating all of the ones in our area to the west side.- we need more police... not just shifting them around
