To Flee, or Not to Flee

Consideration for the quality of housing, transportation, recreation, education, affordability, security and more go into selecting a place to live and raise your family.

Security is probably the highest concern of any parent. Fear of one's environment is the demon that has always crippled our spiritual growth and peace of mind. We can always run and flee in search of that fundamental right to be free of the ugly bully who might live next door or down the street, or stands insidiously on the corner. Participating and getting involved with your neighbors and organizations is one method of giving your community what you want to receive from your community.

    I'm not leaving!

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

Don't want to mislead you. Rochelle, or anyone else, but I'm not an official resident of the No. Lawndale community. However, my interest and involvement in North Lawndale are equal to any concientious effort to contribute to the quality of life, as it is in any predominately African American community in Chicago. Stay public and engage in efforts to alter the attitudes and direction of our youth.

15th and Christiana

hello everyone,i am wondering if anyone can give me some insight about the area as me and my three kids are moving that way soon.Any info good or bad will be greatly appriciated.Thank you very much.

  • A friend recently moved from that block because she said there was an increase in gang activity. I don't mean to add any unnecessary fear but just wanted you to know. Yes there is crime everywhere. I would suggest looking on Chicago Tribune's crime map or another site to see the type of activity that happens around there.

  • Thank u,I recently been doing research and found its the highest crime rate,I acted on impulse and do to low income it was affordable but now I'm having second thoughts,I just needed to move out my in laws place.

Progressives, parents react to Karen Lewis decision not to run for mayor

WBEZ interviewed people regarding their thoughts on Karen Lewis' decision not to enter the Mayoral race.

Here's the link.https://soundcloud.com/wbez/progressives-parents-react-to-karen-lewis-decision-not-to-run-for-mayor#c=0&t=0:00

My comments come in at about 3:15.

  • Amara who?

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Valerie - that was not my intention! I have a tremendous amount of respect for Karen Lewis; I heard her speak last year in Evanston and was blown away! I am saddened by her illness, and sending lots of positive, healing energy her way. That said, I never took her seriously as a candidate for mayor

Antonio - Amara Enyia is running for mayor. I believe that she is the best candidate for mayor since Harold Washington

This council has a great deal of power under Senate Bill 51. The problem is companies almost never show up. They have to have something to advocate for. This is the council that decides rather companies receive waivers for BEP participation. There are many other issues that they deal with. My only suggestion is that when you go to the council have your company in position to do business. Make sure you are in good standing with the state. It is always helpful that you are certified with CMS as a BEP company.

North Lawndale is its own unique entity; a community full of the good and too much of the bad. Out of that community, desperate for social relevance, a committee was formed; formed to regain that relevance and more. It was our bid, your bid, the bid born, developed and presented by our community that formed a partnership with a major university. This is something that is crucial to realize; our community, your community, my community, rose up and dared play with the, “Big Boys” and here we stand. Out of 13 contenders, from New York to Hawaii, here we stand in the Final Four. That is something for all of us, young and old, to be proud of; one of the few times on the national stage in a positive way since Dr. King and here we stand; a real contender. New York, Hawaii, the University of Chicago and City Hall are all looking at North Lawndale right now. What do we do with this unprecedented attention? Walk with Pride, North Lawndale
Here’s a little background on the status of your bid. http://www.gazettechicago.com/index/2014/10/uic-is-finalist-for-obama-presidential-library/

That's what I'm talking about, Paul. The anointed spirit says, "Well, we didn't get the library, but we can still build something, and something else and something else.

You are absolutely right about my passion and purpose to engage, initiate, promote and sustain a comprehensive clean up campaign designed to start from the inside out.

Please invite me to your next meeting.

  • As North Lawndale moves forward with its Library bid, in partnership with UIC, there will be several joint community outreach events. I will do my best to make notifications.
But we don't have to wait for formal events. We have earned the right to use the great and powerful tool of the Library. Let's use it.
EVERYBODY, energize your circle of friends and supporters; get them excited about the Library and what it can do for your cause.
In the mean time, visit and promote our Facebook page.

A cohort of nonprofit organizations on Chicago’s West Side have recently signed on to take the 30-Day Compliance Challenge. The program was developed by Valerie F. Leonard to help nonprofits increase their fundraising capacity by ensuring that they are current with all the necessary filings at the state and federal levels within 30 days. This will remove one of the many barriers to fundraising, freeing organizations to focus more on the day-to-day activities of running programs and services.

Leonard, an expert in community and organizational development, cited the need for organizations to step back and review their nonprofit filings. “I work with organizations on a number of issues, including strategic planning, financial management and board development”, she said. “What I found, is, no matter what issue I’m hired to address, all roads lead to compliance. Organizations-- large and small-- have challenges navigating the requirements of state and federal reporting for nonprofits.”
