WRP Safety

It seems that there were many more shooting incidents in East Rogers Park and Edgewater than in West Rogers Park over the last five to six months. Is that so or am I not looking at the right sources?

Z Frank

I was unable to attend the community meeting this evening regarding the sale and potential redevelopment of the old Z Frank space at Western and Peterson. Was anyone there and have any information? Overall feel for how this will pan out?

  • JR, sorry - I meant that your decision on the house was impacted by the coming development. Sometimes I get so mad my brain scrambles. But I have a question: is there any way the neighbors can stop the rezoning?

  • JR West Ridge Neighbor Since 2003 Resident of West Ridge since 2003

Not sure. the alderman told us that these lot were zoned commercial, but were rezoned for some reason or another about 4 years ago. Now they are reverting them back to accommodate the Toyota dealership.

Red light cameras tag thousands for undeserved tickets
A red light camera at Lincoln Avenue and McCormick Road in Chicago generated 563 tickets during a 12-day spike. More than 99 percent were for right turns. (Chris Sweda, Chicago Tribune)
Red light cameras in Chicago caught thousands of undeserving drivers during sudden spikes in tickets that city officials say they cannot explain, a Tribune investigation found.

  • Also noted in the piece was Peterson/Ridge & Clark St. Very suspicious. If you've gotten a ticket there in the past couple of years, you may want to revisit the circumstances, if possible.

So the red light cams work....what about the blue light cams?

I've been both the victim of violent crime and a witness. The feeling going into court was the same for both. I was nervous, scared, and at the same time knew I was doing the right thing. It is commendable to overcome the fears that cause blind eyes. Our alderman is not perfect. Not one of us are. Some comments made on that thread I believe lost sight of what was originally intended.

When I first reported getting mugged at the end of my alley I was terrified for weeks. My yard is easily identifiable with it having enough toys for six kids in it. They had my phone with pics of kids in yard. I didnt want to leave the house and send my boys to school. I got over it. We play in the backyard and the kids were fine going to school. Guess we got lucky. I just couldnt see letting them hang at the end of our alley after they literally punched me right out of my shoes, broke my big toe, and a few small bones in my hand.. I can definitely understand the fear of retaliation.

  • Sarah, I can understand how truly frightening the whole experience was. You did the right thing, and I thank you. Do you think that reporting what happened scared them off?

We went to the Devon Market yesterday and had a really nice time looking at the different merchants and products they were selling. Lots of Bakery vendors :), a really nice company selling capons that we decided we will by one next week if they come back. There were a couple of veggie/fruit vendors and we bought some lettuce and fresh sweet Black Cherries that are really good. I thought the prices were very competitive and hope that more vegetable vendors come as the season gets more productive for the farmers. Enjoyed looking at the table set up by Rogers Park Historical Society. Thanks for the free canvas bag to help me bring home my purchases. Will return again. We can tell someone worked very hard to make this a successful initial market. Congratulations.

  • I walked to the market and enjoyed capon sausage and hibiscus tea infused with strawberries for dinner, plus took home fresh bread, cherries, and raspberries for later. I had a nice experience and will come again next week. My only criticism is there was no place to sit and eat. I was there shortly after 4. Some tables were being set up as I left. Maybe that's what they were for. Definitely DO support this market.

It was a design feature used to double the revenue stream. Who is going to have the time to fight a ticket that can afford a smartphone and use the app? So few it will be worth it to write the tickets and see who pays.

Devon Community Market needs volunteers

Hi everyone (yes, it's me...again)! The Devon Community Market also needs volunteers to help with various tasks from 2pm to 9pm on Wednesday evenings starting with our launch day on July 9th. Are you or someone you know really good at greeting people, counting people, lifting heavy things, giving directions, taking pictures, answering questions, translating languages, or other things you think would be helpful at the market? I've got a couple folks so far, but need many many more to help make this a fun and festive affair. Let me know who you are and what you like to do and I will be sure to include you! Thanks.

  • I'll be there. Thanks for working so hard on this.

Tipping

I went to the bar at a restaurant and ordered a wine, beer and soft drink.the bill was 16.00 .I gave him a 2.00 tip.the bartender said he couldn't except it because it was too small and an insult.I usually tip my waitress /waiter at least 20 percent. What is the amount I should have given him.I don't go to bars. wasrude of him to talk

  • I used to work in hospitality. Making any comment about the amount of a tip or lackthereof was grounds for termination. He seems like a jerk, and/or having a really bad day. The owner/mgr should know about this. The fact that some people don't realize stuff like this will spread like wildfire is beyond me.

Devon Ave. Special Tax Could More Than Triple Under Proposal

WEST ROGERS PARK — A proposal to renew the special taxing district along Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park could more than triple the levy property owners pay now.

WEST ROGERS PARK — A proposal to renew the special taxing district along Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park could more than triple the levy property owners pay now.

Advocates for the new district, called Special Service Area 43, say the additional tax would help maintain landscaping and other amenities added to the bustling street during the ongoing Devon streetscape project.

The current incremental tax rate is locked in at .4 percent. So a property owner pays $400 a year for every $100,000 in assessed property value.

The proposed tax rate for 2015 is 0.91, with a proposed tax cap for the life of the district set at 1.5 percent.

That means in 2015 property owners along Devon between Damen and Kedzie avenues — and along Western Avenue between Arthur and Granville avenues — could expect to pay more than double what they pay now.

What's That Loud Explosion Heard at Rogers Park?

10.30pm - Explosion sounded like it might have come from a vehicle or a transformer.

Its probably only an organized club of those poor innocent "victims of society".."screaming out at the futility of their existence" exercising their second amendment rights to reinforce the areas of the public ways which they engage in entrepreneurial enterprises such as prostitution and merchandising of organic and pharmaceutical products from other similar organizations of young entrepreneurs.

  • There were some firecrackers and fireworks going off near Devon & Rockwell about that time; might've been related.

Accident on Devon Ave. today

Around 5:15 today. Car hit pedestrian who was crossing the road near Devon and Bell Ave. I believe his daughter was with him as well, she was on ground as well but not as severely hurt as the man. Not a hit and run, driver stayed and was held by police for some questioning and paper work I presume for quite some time.

Victim was hurt very bad, saw him but dispatcher said do not move them. He was slightly conscious though and was rushed to St. Francis immediately. They had blocked off Devon Ave east of Western for about 2 hours.

I am looking for individuals or groups who can provide programming at our Wednesday evening markets that will draw in customers of all ages and not disturb our neighbors. We will not have a sound stage, just a corner of the parking lot dedicated to activities/entertainment that showcases the talent of the community. So far we have one dance group and one Jewish band, but we need others to round out our schedule. Do you know an artist, teacher, musician, storyteller, theater troupe, yoga instructor, puppeteer, etc. who would like to offer an hour or two of talent to the market? Please let me know ASAP or give them my email: devoncommunitymarket@gmail.com. Thanks!

Devon Community Market to accept LINK Card

Hi everyone! I'm the Market Manager for the Devon Community Market and wanted to share exciting news. Based on your feedback, we have secured the resources we need from the City of Chicago to be able to accept LINK Cards and Double Value Coupons at the market this season!! This service will be available through Experimental Station, a non-profit that has partnered with the City of Chicago since 2010 to provide LINK acceptance at farmers markets across the city. Please help me publicize this with people/places you know! There are flyers and postcards at the Alderman's office (2949 W Devon) that you can pick up and distribute. Thanks for your help.

June 12th - 8:15-9:00pm (potentially until 10pm)

The Month of Ramadan beings on the 28th or 29th of June. For the next 30 days be aware of the following times:

Fridays (normal busy time of 1-3pm)

Breaking Fast & Evening Prayers - After Sunset (In Chicago Sunset is about 8:30pm in late June and into July)

Nightly Prayers - 10:10pm - 11:15pm

During the Month of Ramadan expect the usual busy time Friday afternoons but also after Sunset, when Muslims will be breaking their fast and offering the evening prayers. Right after the nightly prayers begin just after 10, Muslims spend the night offering special prayers during the Month, expect higher traffic around this time.

The people of the City of Chicago as a whole have been wonderful at working together during this special time of year for Chicago Muslims however as with any special event that brings more traffic to the area there can be some hiccups. If there are any concerns from someone double parking (a big no-no) to any other concern you may have please communicate with your neighbors attending the Mosque or the Mosque admin themselves.

Last but not least you can always post right here on EB and we can work together to make sure everyone has a safe and fun summer.

  • I think you can just post it again. When you post there is an option to choose the neighborhood, cross-streets, or other parameters. Pick the areas that have the most mosques, maybe?

  • Clarissa Tac Reformed pastafarian

Post it here and join us for Eid al-Fitr in Loyola Park at the end of Lunt Avenue.
