Explore the history of Soldier Field

Love it or hate it? Soldier Field has been at the center of Chicago's political, cultural, and sporting life since it opened in 1924. Come to a multimedia presentation documenting its history this Saturday April 19 at the Rogers Park Branch Library, 6907 N. Clark St., at 1 p.m. Liam A. T. Ford, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, led the newspaper's reporting on the renovation of Soldier Field 2001-2003. In the process he completed his book Soldier Field: A Stadium and Its History. His presentation will show rare photos and documents unearthed in his research. The program is co-sponsored by the library and the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society. The history of Soldier Field tells the story of Chicago!

SeeClickFix app

I have been using the SeeClickFix app pretty successfully for the past week or two to report graffiti and garbage and rats around the neighborhood. It's quick and easy. You snap a photo on your phone, your GPS plugs in the address for you (double check it near intersections or when you are moving), you answer a couple of quick questions, and off it goes to the correct city services department. I've had some successes .... and some disappointments, but it's a much faster easier way to report issues. I hope you will use it too.

I signed up and it is sooo cool! Much easier than Chicago works app. And I can see my great neighbors too. Brilliant!

Insured yes, but make sure the electrician is licensed in Chgo. Electrical work is relative easy as almost anyone with some experience could do most electrical work, as there are many 'handy men' that do good work. The difficult part is to get it done to 'code'. That is, the National Electric Code (NEC 2014) on top of which Chgo adds quite a bit more items. Best to go the extra step and apply for a Fix/Repair permit from Chgo. Unless the work is being done on a single-family home with no intent to rent, a Chgo permit is required by law. It will add some cost, but mention 'code' or 'permit' and the pool of willing electricians drops significantly. However the chances of it being done correctly (more than just the light coming on) is very high with little or no chance of Chgo affixing one of those orange Stop Work signs. Check at the alderman's office for the area location for fix/repair permits.

Fairfield Garbage Tree

It happened again this morning: a large bag of food garbage was deposited on the parkway in front of 6434 North Fairfield., a two-flat. I don't know if it's the tenants or the parkers who are doing this, but it's been happening every few weeks for about a year. Today there was a silver jeep parked out front. As usual, it's food garbage and it looks like the kind of stuff that piles up over a week or so in...

I don't know if it's the tenants or the parkers who are doing this, but it's been happening every few weeks for about a year. Today there was a silver jeep parked out front. As usual, it's food garbage and it looks like the kind of stuff that piles up over a week or so in the car: paper plates, napkins, lots of coffee cups, cans, , food scraps, etc. The people who live in the building never pick this stuff up, which makes sense if they're the ones dropping it there. I'm going to file a report with the city again. I did so 2 weeks ago when I found several piles of garbage there and the inspector was out the next day. We'll never get the city's rat problem under control until we get the human pigs under control.

Kelli, I hate to see responsible people leave the neighborhood because of sanitation issues that the landlords fail to address. I also think it takes more than one neighbor to get management to respond to complaints. I used the City's online service to check on one particularly bad building. Check out the violations for the 6504 N Fairfield building here:
    https://webapps.cityofchicago.org/buildingviolations/violations/addressinfo.html
While picking up on Arthur yesterday I found food all around this building's dumpster and the dumpster open. I wonder if we can recruit others in the surrounding area who are concerned about this issue and ask for a meeting with the building department and the property manager. There may be a better response if the property manager knows that there's more than one person complaining. I also wonder if, in view of the ongoing problems with this building, the neighbors could ask the city to place the building in receivership.

  • Oops! I see the link doesn't work. But that's the place to go. Other things I found yesterday on various parkways included 2 broken chairs, a car bumper from an accident, and several full water bottles. I placed Sunday papers inside several buildings, and every one of them had security doors blocked open, one held with ties, a couple with blocks of phone books, etc. Scary.

FYI: purse snatching at the Western Ave Mcdonalds in West Ridge

Today at 3:20 PM I witnessed a purse snatching while I was in the drive thru lane at the Western Ave Mcdonalds in West Ridge. An African American male, aged 16 to 19, 5'7 to 5'10, medium build wearing tan pants and a dark blue hoodie snatched a light purple wristlet wallet-purse. He ran out the east door of the McdDonalds, through the drive thru lanes, jumped the fence and ran south down the alley between Coyle and Farwell.

Keep an eye on your stuff, even in the afternoon in restaurants.

I did drive down the alleys looking for the wallet in case he dumped the wallet after pulling out the cash (including about 15 garbage cans) , but I didn't find it and I had to get my kids to swim lessons.

Need, it's a little disengenuous of you to start an argument by fabricating the argument you're opposing. No one on this thread has jumped to defend the criminal in this case, so why make an issue out of it? And for your information, it's hardly the case that "left wingers" are out there defending criminal behavior. Sure, some folks put more emphasis on the social conditions that worsen crime, but very few "left wingers" would argue against prosecuting criminals for the crimes they commit.
And by the way, if you're going to weigh in on issues, I suggest you get yourself a proper name. "Need for a change" only tells me that you're some ideologue who is only participating on this site to start arguments. Do you even live in this neighborhood?

They tend to hide behind weird screen names and faceless avatars. Sooner or later they go sulk in their room and break toys.

Reserved Parking

We have a new "reserved parking" spot on our block. The van parked in that spot overnight last night does not have a disability license plate or sticker. How can I find out who the spot is reserved for and why? There is one resident in the building who would qualify for the spot but he does not drive and lives alone.

Building Zoning Amendment Request

Does anyone know about a Zoning Request made by Alderman Silverstein? We received a notice stating that she wants to change a Shopping District - Motor Vehicle Related District to a Residential Single Unit at 6301-6317 N. Western. I am trying to figure out how a single residential building can take up such a large amount of space. I am also concerned about the impact it will have on parking. I will be contactin the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone has heard of this?

Oh, yes, Vic, the snark came through loud-n-clear. But no worries. If I'm to be perfectly honest, I may have been engaging in a wee bit of acting out myself. Probably just reacting to feeling the quasi-judge-y vibe I get from being a happily, don't want to change but thanks for asking, car-drivin' kinda gal. The tutt-tutti-ness I feel on EB just sort of goes all over me sometimes and makes me want to be the most over the top, uber-auto-ist I can possibly be. I can see how it came across as obnoxious, which is what I (perversely, childishly, perhaps?) was shooting for.

Don 't fret, Vic. Contrary to my previous plan of taking careful aim I'll now actively try to avoid running you over. If possible. 'Cause that's what good neighbors do.:-)

  • ...as an aside? Hearing people say "'Amuuurica" (I'm lookin at you, Newt) makes me lose whatever shred of nice I have left.
