Beware of deranged man in WRP

I was walking home yesterday around 4 p.m. on Hoyne ave just past Fargo when somebody started following me. The middle aged black man made light conversation with me about how cold it was then he asked me where I lived he started touching me inappropriately through my ski jacket telling me I had a nice jacket. I immediately ran to the gate of my condo as he walked the opposite direction. I didn't get a good description on him so I did not call the police. I'm posting this to put other females on notice and want the community to keep and eye out and also to be really careful. Scary

Nonsense, you sound as though you have lots of experience with situations where women are accosted, assaulted or groped in your day-to-day rounds. More power to you and your observational skills! I guess.

Me? Not as experienced or capable. Like being able to read a map, maybe. Some people have the skills, some don't.

Helicopter over Touhy Thursday morning?

Did anyone notice the orange and white helicopter hovering over Touhy near McCormick this morning around 8AM? Was there something going on?

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

It looked to us like it was delivering something to the construction zone (maybe an HVAC unit?)

Ald. Silverstein wants to put in Permit Parking on my street. This would not only cost me more money on a street I already pay taxes for but would not solve the problem. I also would need to buy guest passes for visitors. My family has live din the same place for 50 years and the population of the neighborhood keeps going up and will continue to do so, that means even if you pay for the permit you still wont be able to find a parking spot.

I have a 6 year old son with Autism, he is in therapy outside of school 5 days a week. Not only would I need guest passes 2 days a week for my babysitter but I would also need 2 passes 2 days a week for the therapists that come to my house from 5:30-7:30 pm (permit enforcement would start at 5pm) this is ludicrous and would cost me a lot of money, money that I use to provide my son with extra therapy. Has anyone else had a problem like this or tried this route in their neighborhood only to have them thinking "Uh Oh"? I would appreciate any feedback. I was sent a survey and when I tried to fax it in, the fax number provided was for a business called AON downtown, hmmm. Diversion tactic?

  • Well said, Dan. West Ridge is not now and never was a nightlife district.

  • Fuji, I read your proposals on your Web site. A few questions: Why should the neighborhood pick up parking costs for visitors? Who will pay for the free parking and the shuttle buses? Nothing is really "free," there are always costs associated with "benefits" and those costs need to be...

Fuji, I read your proposals on your Web site. A few questions: Why should the neighborhood pick up parking costs for visitors? Who will pay for the free parking and the shuttle buses? Nothing is really "free," there are always costs associated with "benefits" and those costs need to be paid; for example, who will pay to lease and fuel the shuttle buses?. Will they be using CTA stops? Is it really a good idea to add shuttle buses to the congestion on Devon? If the Warren Park lot is used exclusively or overwhelmingly by shoppers, where would those using the park's facilities park?

Rapid gunfire Saturday night Arthur and Bell

No exaggeration, like *20* rapid shots at Arthur and Bell in West Rogers around 1:30 am. Several squad cars within minutes. Couldn't decipher anything from the window but hope no one was hurt. Anyone else around see/hear anything?

Cermak Market?

Anyone got the scoop on the old Dominicks on Ridge? Looks like they're doing a bunch of work there and I heard it was gonna be a grocery called Cermak produce or something like that. Thanks.

I think it's a good sign that they didn't reopen the store too quickly without working on improving it and making it their own. I have no idea exactly what kind of store they plan to open at the site, but this article about a Cermark Fresh store that opened in Milwaukee has me hopeful. Cermak seems to have identified the "ethnic" market as its niche, which makes sense for the Ridge location, given the mixture of Indian, Pakistani and Latino consumers in the area, among others. But they seem to define "ethnic" quite broadly, including Polish, German, Italian and Greek.

"If you were to walk into the (West Milwaukee) store, whether you're Hispanic, whether you're German, whether you're Polish, whether you're Italian, you'd think that store was for you."

  • Looking forward to their opening and I am hoping for a great store nearby to me. From the outside it looks like it will be soon.

Helicopters Over Rogers Park (The Park)

Does anyone know the reason for helicopters over Rogers Park (The Park) and southwest, maybe to Touhy and California (from my vantage point in the park), between 4 and 4:30 this afternoon.

  • Darius-- I'm in the park several times a day. It is great.
Robin-- Our sense of privacy and safety is based on two dimensions. We normally only have to watch our backs. Our front and left and right take care of themselves. Surveillance from above violates that norm, which is precisely why cops and the media use helicopters.

I don't like it because of all the noise. On Saturday, a helicopter was so low that I could not carry on a conversation with a neighbor in front of my house.

Airplane noise: Emanuel rakes in campaign donations from airplane execs

Money talks. Just in case anyone thought the Mayor's selling out of Chicago residents to the big airlines (on all manner of issues, airplane noise being just one of them) had stalled with all his lip service about "looking into the issue," here comes the news that airplane execs -- most of whom don't live in the city (no surprise) -- have shelled out big cash to Emanuel's campaign chest. No strings attached, though (yeah, sure).

Chicago's most dangerous intersections for pedestrians--Touhy and McCormick is near the top!

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-most-dangerous-intersections-met-20141014-story.html

In the suburbs, the most dangerous intersections were McCormick Boulevard and Touhy Avenue in Skokie; Cicero Avenue and Cermak Road in Cicero; and U.S. Route 12 and Cermak Road in Westchester.

  • I can see Touhy and McCormick. The speed limit on McCormick is 40mph but most people drive through there way faster and don't really yield to anyone. Then there is all that business traffic which will only grow will all the new things they are building up.

And Cicero and Cermak is a MESS! That is one of the most frustrating intersections in the suburbs.

Z Frank

I was unable to attend the community meeting this evening regarding the sale and potential redevelopment of the old Z Frank space at Western and Peterson. Was anyone there and have any information? Overall feel for how this will pan out?

Z Frank Chevrolet was in that location since 1936, until it was sold to Mike Anderson Chevrolet in 2008, and subsequently moved to Irving Park, near Six Corners. There was also a Pontiac dealership where the Walgreens is now located. This area has been commercial (and a car dealership) for longer than most of us have been alive, it's just been vacant for the last several years. To me, complaining about a new car dealership coming in is on a par with complaining about airport noise after you buy a house in Des Plaines -was the airport there when you bought the place? Yes? Then you knew about the "nuisance" and that should have been part of your decision making process. Same with Z Frank. I, for one, welcome the new enterprise.

I'm very involved with my neighbors and I have absolutely no commitment to either Silverstein or O'Connor. But I VOTE and and I will talk with my neighbors about THEIR votes. When aldermen/women make descisions without considering their constituancy there are consequences. I'm not apposed to a car dealership, but a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be preferable. Of course nobody asked me what I thought, but I will vote in November.

Community Service Hours for High School and College Students

I am running an Intergenerational Arts Program and I have room for a few more students interested in gaining service hours and experience by volunteering and doing photography, video, a journal article, and assisting with the older adult program. The program is 5 weeks long, on a weekend afternoon and one weekday afternoon / evening. Can anyone recommend the Community Service Director at a nearby high school ? Contact Sharon Hyson, Arts Educator and Art Therapist at shazhys@yahoo.com for further information.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Sharon - this sounds like a great program! Besides the "nearby" high schools, I would contact all of the selective enrollment high schools as they draw students from all over the city.

Call the school, and ask to speak to a guidance counselor (you can generally find the names on the schools' websites
