The Best I've Found So Far: New vs. Old Chicago Ward Maps

The Chicago Tribune has a great link for those of us what are still wondering what the redrawn Chicago Aldermanic Wards mean to our neighborhoods.

http://tinyurl.com/NewChicagoWards

p.s., Dear Everyblock Moderators, please update the boundaries for the 11th Ward

  • Oops, I apologize for calling out the moderators. The new Ward boundaries do not go it to effect until January 1, 2015.

  • On January 1 our Ward will look like the strange silhouette of a Nightmare Before Christmas character. Who draws these things?

It is clear that you Mr. Victor H. Reyes owner of The El Rey "Ballroom" which is running an illegal night club in the McKinley Park community has many resources and can do much better. Your so called ballroom is the cause of many broken beer bottles, drunken fiascos and patrons thinking that the exterior of our homes are public bathrooms, not to mention the parking mess. I know you are well connected and hide behind the scenes most of the time. I know you also use "Pro-Hispanic community" talk when you do speak for credibility. But Mr. Reyes, if you are for us, why not open a positive business in our community? Sure your donations for art & culture go a long way and we appreciate them but help our communities by providing positive businesses. A man of your category and pull to open illegal nightclubs? I know you are much classier than this. Please help our communities, find another way to use this facility and any other you may own to bring a positive atmosphere in a much needed area. Your neighbors and people would appreciate this. And if for some reason you are not aware of what is going on in this building, please see the links below.

broken snowblower

my snowblower will not start. does anybody know of anyone in the area that fixes stuff like this? and does a good job.

SW ACE Hardware, 6908 W. Archer Avenue
AUSTIN Hardware, 6146 S. Archer Avenue

Also, while it was too late to help fix our aging snowblower with this product (STABIL) a neighbor swore by it for keeping a snowblower starting/running well from season-to-season. This is what the neighbor said about it:

    "I don't know if
you have ever heard of STABIL. I have used it for years. You can add it
to any Gas left in a machine over several seasons making it easy to
start again by protecting the engine against old gas, and you don't have

right up. I did forget to put it in in the spring, but added it in in
the winter before i started up."

    Good luck!

Body Shop

I need a recommendation for a good body shop in Brighton Park area. Suggestions?

  • i went to cals collision center on 38th st. approx 2900 block. they are professional, and slick, and acted like we'd be friends for life. the work was good. but when i went back with an unrelated and much smaller issue, they wouldn't give me the time of day. i don't think i'd go back.

  • I had a small job done at Autos R Us. They're right by the 35th/Archer Orange line stop, so it was pretty convenient to drop off the car and head for the train. It was not a complicated job or anything, but they did a good job.

  • Philips Auto Body 4822 S. Kedzie...never had a problem with them..and lately I have also been using Rays Auto Services 6214 S. Central - very reasonably priced

Traffic Control - why Bridgeport and not Brighton Park?

Driving down Halsted from 30th to 39th where construction is going on at the intersection of 31st and Halsted there were traffic control personnel at 31st, the next light going south which I think is 33rd, and another at 35th street. Traffic is limited to one lane going south. My point is WHY (?) the safety measures and visible traffic control for this four (4) block area when Pershing Road construction, Archer, and Ashland construction DID NOT have any visible traffic control? In this area all roads are main arteries.

  • It's about pedestrian foot traffic.

  • it's kind of like when you call the police and they say they'll send someone out when the resources become available.

  • This has been going on for so long...it's our aldermen..it goes to show that their main concern is not with their neighborhoods. This has been going on for so long...it's our aldermen..it goes to show that their main concern is not with their neighborhoods. People need to realize that things such as "health fairs" and "drives" are only ways of self promotion. The companies pay to participate in the fairs. They promote themselves by offering simple services such as blood pressure readings and flu shots. The raffle prizes that you receive are also provided by the companies as part of their fee. These are all tactics used to make people think that they are doing something for the community. I recall someone else previously posting a similar response when I brought up this issue...they said that anything past Roosevelt was not of Rahms concern - I totally agree...its all political.

I'm pleased to report that out McKinley Park Progressive Alliance is getting some good momentum based on the coming electoral season. We never formally endorsed Pete or Chuy but all of us are enthusiastic for their campaigns. Pete's campaign is currently moving on three fronts -- defend the position on the ballot from Cardenas' frivolous legal attack to our signatures, raise some money to open an office, and conduct a whirlwind tour -- holding meetings in every precinct. In the past week -- in addition to the MPPA forum -- we've held two local meetings in precincts west of Western. In their own way, they have been even more successful than the candidate's forum. The reason? Grassroots residents came and vented their frustration because they feel abandoned by the current alderman. Jorge you have been a great person to meet for you knowledge of real estate and insights about how to frame policy that will lead to a people-centered revival in McKinley. I have been around a long time and I know momentum building when I see it.

I turned around to see who she was screaming at this time. She kept saying “ PICK IT UP, PICK IT UP” I was very confused why she was yelling at me when my dog didn't do anything there. I told her there was nothing to pick up but I always clean up after my dog and even other dogs in the neighborhood. I showed her the poop bag I had in my hand and the rolls of poop bags I had in my pocket. She would not calm down and kept rambling on. She then got the bartender involved and another older man involved and they were repeating what she just screamed at me. They were very rude, hostile, and violent. I was verbally harassed over a petty issue. If they treated me like this I can't imagine the way they treat their customers.

  • Now we should all yell back at them to pick it up. Pick up all the bottles of alcohol their customers throw on the lawn while standing outside the bar drinking.

"Did you see all the amazing public art, streetscaping, business development and infrastructure modernization projects in Bridgeport this year, which put us miles down the road to end blight? To the tune of $11.5M? Yeah, neither did I." - Grace M.

Folks, I really hope to see you Thursday night.
My wife Lynn and I are working w/ friends to bring the TIF Illuminator Project to Bridgeport. Regardless of political leanings, Chicagoans needs to know this information.

My friends and family are incensed by the deplorable conditions of Halsted and the lack of local leadership/accountability. By my count there are 120+ vacant, dilapidated or empty commercial plots along Halsted, between 49th & University Village. Our TIF Districts, including the one along Halsted, drained $11.5 million from us in 2013. That’s money intended to stamp out encroaching urban blight. Have you seen $11.5 million in local development? Neither have I. Those millions were only the take for 2013. Some local TIFs began in 1996 and wont expire until 2020.

More worrisome is a sneaky, trick called “PORTING.” Porting allows our $11.5 Million to flow straight downtown to fund the poorly planned DePaul Entertainment District, w/o local input and only a hand-shake between Mayor & Alderman ...a VERY real possibility. Early projections of costs for the District were $1.1 Billion. However, the SunTimes reports skyrocketing cost and Emanuel scrambling for money.

Now that you’re angry let me suggest the start of a solution.
- become educated on the TIF process
-demand the support of full transparency in the TIF process as a basic requirement of ALL elected official.

The first step of educating ourselves is what Thursday night is all about.

To be respectful of everyone’s weekday evenings the presentation starts at 7pm sharp and is only one hour in length.

  • UPDATE: last night Tom Tresser let us know that adjusting for the newly drawn 11th Ward boundaries the Mayor & Alderman's TIF Districts siphoned $16 MILLION out of our neighborhood in 2013. Of that $16 MILLION, $4.5 Million simply disappeared into random city accounts and will never to be seen again. What could you have done with $4.5 Million to help rebuild the neighborhood?

  • - All that was required to make this $4.5 Million disappear was a simple hand-shake agreement between Alderman James Balcer & Mayor Ramn Emanuel. Where did our money go Jim Balcer? Local school budgets were cut, the police need patrol officers, the library is open reduced hours, our streets are...

Local school budgets were cut, the police need patrol officers, the library is open reduced hours, our streets are in disrepair, NOTHING has been done about the ruined viaducts between Bridgeport and Armour Square and again into Chinatown. What about the incredible blight along Halsted? This has happened on your watch Alderman Balcer. This is a permanent stain on your leadership.

Sullivan's campaign covered only 1/5 of the honorarium. A group of 11th Ward families and friends paid the other 4/5. As a group 11th Ward Neighbors is calling for transparency in the TIF process. Maureen Sullivan is on-board with transparency, enough so that her campaign gave some money to help host the event. If Maureen Sullivan is elected we will hold her to fighting for a transparent TIF process. Should Daley Thompson or Kozlar get the vacant 11th Ward Aldermanic seat we'll hold them accountable just the same. Abuse of public funds transcends a specific campaigns.

We are stating that a transparent TIF process is now a basic expectation for holding office in the 11th Ward.

Last year TIF Districts extracted $11.5 Million in taxes from our 11th Ward

Simultaneously our local public schools took $4,613,000 in cuts and three schools were closed. How is this happening and what can we do to about it?

Tom Tresser, Lead Organizer of the TIF Illumination Project and co-founder of the CIvicLab has agreed to help us figure that out.

Please join us this Thursday at:

I'm thinking of the 120+ open, vacant, dilapidated or empty plots along Halsted, from 49th Street to the Viaduct in to University Village. The 11th Ward's new friends and family in University Village will want to take a close look at what has been done further south. I would hate to see the results of their hard work funneled away to benefit some random slush fund.

Thanks. I just wasn't sure at first about which Halsted "mess" you were referring to.
