Speed camera

Speed camera on Archer near Wood WHY the speed cameras are for schools and playgrounds. None there. Contact 12ward to ask WHY?

  • It would be nice if there was some visable signage about the speed limit change and speed camera - especially when getting off of 55 (at Wood) and turning onto Archer.

The 1/8th mile placement i think we can all agree is ridiculous. If you wish for that to be changed it was first created in Springfield by our State Senators and State Reps. Call them to let them know you are not happy with the placement of these cameras as well as city officials.

Dog Park at McKinley Park

My husband and I would like to start a new Dog-Friendly Area (DFA) at McKinley Park. There are a number of people who walk their dogs both on- and (illegally) off-leash within the park, and we think a designated area for dogs would make the entire park safer and cleaner for everyone while also more enjoyable for dogs and their owners.

A DFA is the only place in Chicago parks where dogs are allowed to run and play off-leash. They usually provide ammenities like dog drinking fountains and waste bags, and they follow park hours. Dogs must be registered and have certain vaccines to visit the park.

There are currently no dog parks within Chicago on the South, West, or Southwest sides. The closest to us is about 5 miles away. We think that a DFA at McKinley Park would improve the park and our community.

The procedures for establishing a DFA are on the Chicago Park District website. One of the first steps is to form a group of people interested in pursuing this. It does seem to be an involved process that will require petitions and fundraising, so we're looking for dedicated dog-owners and non-dog-owners alike who would like to join us in this effort. Please reply if this is you!

One of the other steps is to choose an possible location, and my husband and I have a couple of ideas. Since it's supposed to be an under-utilized area, our first suggestion is the southeast corner of the park, which has no fields or structures at this time. Our other (and I think better) suggestion would be part of the gigantic median that exists between the north and south legs of Damen on the east side of the park. I would also ilke to hear feedback on these suggestions and the idea of a DFA in general.

Thank you!

  • Is this still and idea people are still discussing? I really like the idea, although it's completely absurd for the park district to expect a citizen committee to raise the $150K for the project. Dog owners would be happy with a fenced enclosure. I wonder if all other dog parks in the city had to go through the same process.

  • Mei --Are you still exploring this? I'd like to get involved and help, if so. I'm new the the area and want to help in the effort to explore a dog park in McKinley Park or Bridgeport. A few people on this post have given so much information and, from working as a dog walker years ago, I've talked to others who have started campaigns for dog parks. I think it will be hard, but we have enough resources to give it a go.

Looking for an occasional babysitter in the neighborhood

Hello! My wife and I are looking for an occasional babysitter for our three-year-old son. This would be ideal for a local college student, as it would mostly consist of minding the house while the child is sleeping. (We'd most likely be looking at a weekend night once a month.) We're located in southeast McKinley Park, just a couple streets east of the park.

Anyone available, or have any recommendations? Naturally, we'd want to get to know any babysitter, as well as check out references, prior to starting. You can post your contact info here (email is great), and I'll be in touch. Thanks!

  • Hello,

My daughter, Kasandra, is a freshman at DePaul University and would be interested to do some baby sitting on the weekends. She is free Monday, Friday, and the weekend. Feel free to contact her via email with any question. Her email is kasandra.negrete@yahoo.com.

  • Justin K. McKinley Parker since 2008, south sider since 1998

Thanks, everyone! Gina, I'm shooting a message to Kasandra this afternoon.

So, at about 10:30pm I was watching tv when all of a sudden I hear a Loud Bang! Then the lights went out. There was a second bang but not as loud. The entire block went black! Along with the block behind mines. Does anyone know what it was that happened? Anyone else in this black out with me? Lol. No police sirens have been heard so idk. Thank goodness for candles and flashlights...oh and my iPad, guess I'll watch movies I downloaded on there for now.

Old Wrigley Building Demolition

Does anyone know why the stopped the demolition of the Wrigley Building? I'm sick of looking at a half torn down building as it's been for the last 9 months. Did they uncover something potentially toxic prompting them to stop immediately? I can't think of any reason that would prompt someone to tear down a half of a building and then just leave the rest hanging out. If that was the intent, they shouldn't have bothered demolishing any of it.

Any thoughts?

Construction?

Does anyone know when the construction at Western and Archer is going to be done with? Are they just working underground? It seems like a big project for such a small crew. Is there any way to get the traffic control out to this sight because the way they have the are blocked off is a major hazard for drivers and pedestrians. I feel sorry for all of the business lost at that intersection due to the blocked off streets and sidewalks.

Pregnant cat question

I know from reading EveryBlock that many of you love animals, as do the people in the three units of housing in my building. I am looking for some advice here. We are near 40th and Western.

Recently, a little black cat, in the earlier stages of pregnancy, has been hanging around our yard. It's thoroughly fenced-in, and it's not uncommon for cats to hang around a bit, because there's nothing to bother them there. We have some ferals in the hood, but not too many. I consider them my neighbors.

I would characterize this cat as semi-feral. She will run if you make a sudden move, but she will also allow you to approach, sometimes even rolling on her back in that "scratch my tummy" move. I worry about that, because it isn't always a very good move for a cat. Anyway, given those facts, what, if anything, can we/should be do to help this cat? We can't just take her in, because we all have rather jealous, territorial cats already inside. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

  • Hello, thanks for your concern with homeless cats. I recently trapped a feral cat with kittens, I feed her daily as she's nursing her babies. Since the cat I trapped is feral, she will get fixed and eventually released back to her cat colony. Paws Chicago has traps you can...

Hello, thanks for your concern with homeless cats. I recently trapped a feral cat with kittens, I feed her daily as she's nursing her babies. Since the cat I trapped is feral, she will get fixed and eventually released back to her cat colony. Paws Chicago has traps you can rent to capture cats. The one you have seems to be a stray cat if she allows you to get near her and wants belly rubs. You can call paws Chicago for advice as they are very helpful. Don't call animal control as the cat will eventually get put down due to an overpopulation of cats. Do you feed her and is there shelter near you in case she has her kittens? I wish I could trap her but I'm currently working with my little brood. I might have someone who could trap her and give her a place to stay until she has her kittens.

  • we rented a trap from PAWS for the capture and release feral program. last vortex winter we captured and fixed seven cats. But along with that comes the importance of feeding them and providing them shelter. All but one is still around. Not sure what happened to the rest.

Gardning?

I have plenty of blossoms on my veggies, but very few fruits, veggies! Only seen 1 bee all summer so far. Why is everyone so afraid of them that they kill them off?
Is there a professional beekeeper available to hire?

Rush Hour Traffic on Archer

Traffic control is badly needed in the area of the construction on both Archer and Pershing. HELP!

  • I have lived north and south. Please southsiders get with it! 39th Street is a mess as is Archer. I drive my grand daughter to school in the morning. A.M. traffic is bad but coming home - A NIGHTMARE.

  • Jorge Vega Www.searchingchicago.com

I agree, things are getting very aggressive down this stretch of road. I've seen people completely disregard pedestrians all to wait yet again at the red light. Give yourself some time, slow down, don't block intersections, watch for pedestrians and stop at red lights & crosswalks.
