Construction?

Does anyone know when the construction at Western and Archer is going to be done with? Are they just working underground? It seems like a big project for such a small crew. Is there any way to get the traffic control out to this sight because the way they have the are blocked off is a major hazard for drivers and pedestrians. I feel sorry for all of the business lost at that intersection due to the blocked off streets and sidewalks.

  • The safety of drivers and pedestrian is being compromised as well. I wonder what the statistics are on violent crimes around the area. Has the response time for 911 calls been effected? Have car accidents increased? There is always broken glass and bumper remnants on the street. The railing under the viaduct looks like someone took the jaws of life to it. A call was made to repair that, but no action has been taken.

I own a business near 33rd/Archer and they just finished the construction here finally. I had my worst summer in 19 years. It was ridiculous. They would never inform us of any of the street closures. Even when my customers tried to park in LEGAL open spots to park the construction crew was telling them to move.

At one point they dumped the gravel in front of my shop within 8 feet of the entrance. Then it rained and I had to go out and free up the sewer because water was starting to back up everywhere because they dumped the gravel on top of the sewer blocking the flow of it. I feel for any of these businesses.

Looking for a cleaning lady

Hi. I'm looking for someone (preferably local) to do some light cleaning work a few times a week. Do you know a local lady looking for some extra cash? Please pass it on. Thank you!

Quality Daycare References

I have a newborn, and I'm looking for recommendations for a good daycare--either home-based or a center. I plan to return to work in a couple of months, so I need to find somewhere that has openings soon (and not a long wait list). I breastfeed and use cloth diapers, so somewhere familiar and comfortable with these would be best. Thanks!

  • I turned on the email setting. Please try now.

  • My experience with Archer Avenue Learning Station has been great. My daughter started there when she was almost 3. It took her some time to get accustomed to it because she had to do "work." There is no TV there. They do projects, activities, art, read. She loves her teachers there but still would prefer to lay on the couch and watch TV if given the choice.

Safe Passage

Question: Why are Safe Passage routes only reserved for certain school districts and not all? Kids need the support of adults no matter where they reside.

  • I believe the safe passage routes were developed in the highest crime areas.

  • Joe Trutin Lifelong Near Southwest side resident

they were created after Rahm's mass neighborhood school closures. They set up those routes because those students would have to travel longer distances and sometimes trek through opposing gang turfs. Oh course it is still highly debated if they were safe as there were plenty of problems along the routes since they didnt have the staff to protect the safety of the students in the first place.

Abnormal activity

I've been noticing an increasing amount of African American males parking near archer and artesian (permit required) and walking up to the train tracks only later to get a whiff of what smells like marijuana. Where are they coming from? What brings them here?

  • Oh yeah. This doesn't sound racist at allllllll.....

Gina, call 911. Let CPD do their job.

School review

Hello neighbors,
I'm so happy that Everyblock is back up and running! Maybe you can help me out. I'm exploring school options for one of my kids and I know of this school on Pershing Rd. I want to see if anyone can give me some feedback about it. Does your child go there? Would you recommend this school?
Thanks

First I want to say that I love all the features Horizon Science Academy (McKinley) school offers. They have many different clubs that I absolutely love!! Violin, reading club, yoga and of course ROBOTICS club!!! are some of my favorites. I also love the open communication between the teachers and parents. Most of the staff are always friendly and happy. My son's teacher was always nice and helpful as much as she could. The school is clean and neat with beautiful colors all over and very high tech.

HOWEVER, I do NOT like the discipline and/or structure of the school. I don't think kids should be allow to walk around the classroom after an assignment is done while others are still working. Also I don't like the fact that kids are allow to LAY ON THE FLOOR to do their work. Its like there is no difference between home and school!!.... Kids are encourage to help each other, which I don't mind, but It led to my son letting others do HIS job while he play around. Also the handbook policy says there are NO electronics allowed in the school, yet many kids were allowed to bring their tablets and play with them during school hours...... IT IS A SHAME BECAUSE I TOTALLY LOVE EVERYTHING THEY HAVE TO OFFER. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE DISCIPLINE and/or WEAK STRUCTURE OF THE SCHOOL I WOULDN'T HAD SWITCHED MY SON FROM SCHOOL. Till today, I'm still debating weather I should give this school another try.. :/

Part of the reason why I dislike charter schools is that so many of them are corrupt and just vehicles to take money out of public education and put it into the pockets of the already wealthy. I'd love to see Greene or another public school get those robotics resources ...

Exercise Facility - Upstairs from where Cardenas had his old office

Parking on Archer (meter) is plentiful. For those of us who have had to purchase a permit to park on Campbell it is disturbing to see someone with a yoga mat sneak in and sneak out (minus parking permit) for an exercise session. Please! Courtesy is Contageous. Let the customers know not to park without a permit.

Sounds like by me. LaVan Insurance on 40th street also have people parking here all the time without permits. The permit works but it needs to be enforced. Not come around maybe once a month. I have talked to people who live in other areas where they say they come out 3 times a week and in the morning and night and weekends. Forget the weekend here everyone is parked there are only a few of us who actually give out daily passes for when we have relatives or friends over. Enforcement is the key.
