Experts: City Hall has the evidence to lengthen yellow light times

Northbound cars pass through a yellow light on Western Avenue at Pershing Road on March 13, 2015. Experts around the country say Chicago's yellow light times are too short, posing a safety hazard.

  • i almost got rear ended this week stopping for one of those cameras. the car behind screeched their brakes.... I'm lucky i didn't end up in the hospital.

  • joann butkus resident for 35 yrs

You are right Stanley! AND did you know that those camera tickets are NOT CONSTITUTIONAL! The accused has the RIGHT TO CONFRONT THEIR ACCUSERS AND WITNESSES IN A COUORT OF LAW!! WHERE IS ANY OF THAT IN THIS PROCESS??? WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONFRONT A CAMERA???? Then let them bring the cameras to court and ANSWER QUESTIONS!

Ummmm - there is a commercial vehicle that keeps parking on the block which takes up two spots with a temporary permit on it. Help me out here. Are there laws that prohibit that? It parks there quite often - someone who does cabinetry. And also a chair has been dumped on the grass near the alley. It's been rained on and it's an eye sorer. Come on people. Have some pride.

  • If the truck has commercial plates, it can only park in a residential area while conducting business (eg while installing cabinets). Otherwise, it is not supposed to park there. I would leave a note on the window, if you feel safe and comfortable doing so. Otherwise I would report to 311.

  • truck parking laws and which streets are considered residential is a mystery, and its hard to get a definitive answer.

  • woodwrkr cabinet maker

There used to be a cooling and heating commercial van parking in front of my home every night. I called my alderman and they took swift action. Now I can get to park closer to home instead of Parking a block away..

The Trees Are Disappearing

What is happening to the trees in McKinley Park? In the last few weeks many, many trees have been cut down leaving some blocks with one of two trees. It looks terrible! Large beautiful trees are completely gone. Many more have signs on them to be cut down in the coming days. I understand some may have emerald ash borer but all of them?? Anyone know what is happening to the trees? Will they be re-planted?

  • invasive pests are here, i met a blueberry farmer last summer who now has to spray for 7 additional pests that were never here before. in nature, things like this are controlled by forest fires, deep freezes, and such. but,we cant set ourselves on fire or control the weather. once the natural balance and cycle are disrupted, this is the kind of stuff that results. we need to take care of our mother earth. its good for all of us. lets plant some trees.

Lowering my cable tv bill.

We just finished renovations and are finally moving home. Before we do, we could use your advice. We've been paying almost $180 for TV & Internet together through cable. We don't watch much TV, mostly news and live sports, and we use Netflix all the time. I've been asking friends and neighbors to see who they use for service.

My sister shared a site she found through ND that recommends the right TV service based on channels you want:www.10channels.com. It's telling me a bundle from AT&T would be $50 less each month for the next year. The Internet speed looks fast. There's another good offer from DIRECT if we want a satellite.

Before I call, has anybody tried AT&T or a satellite? If so, how is the connection and speed? Does heavy rain make a difference? Thank you for your help :-)

  • Direct tv is great, service is interrupted during heavy hail like rain.

  • Carol R A concerned Mom & citizen.

I have had att u verse for over 8 years & It works fine for my family. No problems with speed or connections. HOwever, after the promotional price expires, it's pretty expensive. I'm looking for a change too, we're just trying to finish watching all the programs we have stored on the dvr before we switch. Lol!

AT&T Versus Comcast Internet/cable?

I am looking into lowering my cable TV/Internet Bill. I just used 10channels.com to find the lowest priced package/provider for what I want. I am going to either switch to AT&T or lower my package level with Comcast. Any thoughts or advice you have would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Figuring out a cheaper TV Bill?

I wanted to share:www.10channels.com. I picked the channels we watch, and then the site recommended the lowest-priced packages from each provider. I wanted to share this because changing could save money.
We have a Comcast Bundle at our house, and are thinking about switching to ATT internet w/ DIRECTV. We will save about $50/month- even after the promo-rate ends. Anyone have Directv? Advice or warnings?

  • we put an antenea (sp.) in our attic, works great and we get a much better quality picture than you get from cable or sat. and its free!

LOST DOG: White Pitt Bull with dark spots

White female pitt bull with laight brown spots ran away on the 5200 block of Keating Ave. (did not have her collar on since she was recently bathed). Responds to the name of Pepsi.

Please respond to this post if you have any information. THANK YOU!

  • Ev

I just saw the report you filed with Lost Dogs Illinois and Pepsi is at CACC on Western. Please hurry and get there TODAY as I see she has been there since the 13th and their new policy stray hold time is 3 days! Which means tonight by 7 she is off stray hold and I don't want nothing to happen to her, or a rescue to pull her. Get there ASAP!! Here's the link to her photo there: http://petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=CHGO.A126494

  • Jim Reho (a/k/a hodeho) Thirteen-year Brighton Park resident

I very much hope that Pepsi has been located and is back with her family.

Ev, I know you are well-intentioned, but I think you're more alarmed about the new Animal Care and Control policy than you need to be. Please take a look at this article:

    http://www.redeyechicago.com/pets/redeye-city-council-approves-shorter-stray-animal-hold-20141112-story.html

Under the new ordinance, it is true that after three days Animal Control can now release an animal to a rescue organization. However, the minimum of five days until euthanasia is considered remains the same. So, the intent and effect of the ordinance is to enable animals to be transferred to rescue organizations sooner, which is generally a lot better for them than lingering longer than five days at CACC. For that reason, PAWS supports the ordinance. According to the founder of PAWS, "It’s not going to put the animal at risk of euthanasia, but what it will do is get it a transfer to a shelter, and the reason that’s important is for most of these animals, five days there is a death sentence."

I have a lot of respect for PAWS. They do terrific work. Overall, I think the changes, whether they save the city money or not, will help more animals survive. I think there is a lot of misunderstanding of what the new ordinance actually means. Yes, there may be a rare occasion, such as the one with Pepsi, when the process becomes more difficult for a lost animal's family because the animal has been transferred after three days. On the whole, however, a lot more animals will have a chance at life by being transferred to PAWS or another rescue organization as quickly as possible. For the vast majority of animals at CACC, who were either intentionally brought there or who will never be looked for by anyone, going to a different shelter is by far the best alternative.
