Club on 35th & Western Ave.

Does anyone else notice the club on 3500 S. Western Avenue? This place called El Rey is operating a full blown club using a banquet hall license. How are they getting away with this? When was the letter sent out to neighbors within 500 feet as required city ordinance?

  • I've noticed El Rey a number of times. It actually looks kind of fun, if I were 20 years younger and not white. Sigh. Here's a video of some interior action: https://vimeo.com/28799162 Definitely has that "nightclub vibe."

  • Jorge Vega Www.searchingchicago.com

Uh yeah, that constitutes as a night club. Thanks for the video, parking is bad because of this, traffic is horrible and residents can't walk in peace when these so called "Banquet" events are happening. Let's not forget the drinking/urinating on parking lots and street blocks in the neighborhood before the patrons enter this place. Please share this concern on social media sites so we can put an end to this garbage before it gets worse, because it will.

Horizon School

Hello,
I am a teacher from Garfield Ridge. My son attends private school (his CPS school has 35 kids in each class) but we are looking into horizon science for next year. I have read the political comments and am trying to do all of my research. Please, if your child attends horizon, would you mind sharing your honest opinion of the school? How are the kids? Are the parents involved? Is the curriculum demanding? I know many people hate charters but I am looking for a parents opinion of the school, not the politics behind it. Thank you in advance!

  • Well, on one hand, you have their sixth graders doing very well in a major robotics competition, on the other hand, you have a weird, cultish, secretive group with bent politicians in their pocket (Hello, Mike Madigan) and a history of bad behavior. Note that your kids will get some Turkish culture, looks like. (Not that that's bad in and of itself, but if the sole primary focus is only on Turkish culture ....)

Man going door to door asking for money

Today there was an African American Male going door to door around the 4200 block of South California Ave asking for assistance saying his wife is dying my Bf's dad answered the door and informed him that we could not be of assistance thought I would let people in the community know since the man is knocking on people's doors soliciting money.

  • Wrong neighborhood

  • I had a skinny black guy come by my place around 40th & Campbell several weeks ago asking for money to help bury his daughter. Had a picture and everything. No idea if he was legit or not; if he was faking, it was a fine performance and well worth the couple bucks I gave him.

I-55 in bound Tues afternoon

Does anyone know what the cause was, and where it was on North bound I-55 for the 3:00pm rush hour? I heard NO mention of it in media. and it was a MASSIVE BACKUP! At 3"10 pm I got on at County Line rd. Got as far as about 1 mile past LaGrange Rd, When it came to a crawl. Mostly a stopped crawl. After about an Hour I couldn't take it no more and got off at central. So W.T.H. happened? And why no mention on the news? Does the SW side warrant no mention?

  • Just me Lifelong caring resident

Yeah!! I got stuck in it to!!

  • Fortunately, I was outbound at the same time. There was an accident, inbound, just east of Pulaski. While there didn't seem to be any serious damage, a tracter-trailer was up on the embankment at a significant angle. The State Police, Chicago Fire Department and IDOT were on scene. I suspect it took some time to relocate the vehicles involved, thus the serious backup for inbound traffic.

  • Thanks kfactor! The backup was quite severe! Worst I've ever seen on inbound I-55 took me over 1hr to get from County line rd till get off at cicero because I couldn't tolerate it anymore!

It's summer, and I'm dreading it?

So, my husband and I live in Brighton Park—a neighborhood weirdly intersected by hipsters, Asians, long-time Polish residents and Latino families. My husband and I (both in our mid-30's) have long enjoyed the idea of having an outdoor space to relax after work, which for years has been thwarted by local underage gang members thinking our ally-corner-house-driveway is their basketball sanctuary.. . . while I’ve no problem with kids out playing ball, I DO have a problem with kids doing...

The kids around my house curse, drink, graffiti our garbage cans and garage and use our garage door and garage gutters as target practice—which causes damage. Our dogs can’t go outside when they are out because the “kids” taunt them. WE can’t go outside when these kids are out. I’ve actually had to start going inside my house from the garage to avoid the constant taunts and slurs. I’m Just a “white b*tch” married to an "ugly chino”. This is what I hear. Every day. Every summer. Just to pull in my driveway and come home from work. From Cook County Jail. Where I get NONE of this.
What say you neighbors? We’ve tried going to CAPS meetings only to be brushed off by the local cops. I guess WE’RE the trouble makers!

We’ve tried reaching out to neighbors who are too terrified of the gangs to say anything. Shoot, I’VE been threatened by our 300+ pound neighbor after knocking on their door to ask them to turn the live karaoke music blasting from their backyard down. At 3:00 am. I weigh 112 pounds. He's almost 3 times my weight, but didn't think twice to threaten me.

At this point, I can’t wait to leave. I don't know what to do anymore. ANY advice is welcome.  Sadly--I'm DREADING this summer. :(

Sorry to hear about your problems, BrightonT. There is no doubt that gangs are the plague of the South Side, including Brighton Park. That and Red Plum. However, I must say that Brighton Park, McKinley Park, Pilsen, and Bridgeport, overall, have gotten better since I moved here in 2001. I agree with all the good suggestions made here for taking action -- calling 911 and 311, CAPS, etc. I would add that asking for the watch commander when you call 911 might help.

My observation is that Brighton Park, like many areas in Chicago, is very block-to-block. My block is a pretty darn good one where people keep an eye out and generally care about taking care of their little single-family homes and two or three-flats. I don't think that constantly hating on "illegals" is the answer. I care a lot more about how someone acts than about their immigration status. But that's a topic for another day.

Change comes slowly and incrementally. It comes only when people commit to living in an area and are determined to make it better in small steps. I hope to be here until the end of my days. I just hope that isn't real soon and doesn't occur in any dramatic fashion. And on those days when you're annoyed as hell at noise, barking dogs, graffiti, gang-bangers, or whatever, remember that the very vast majority of people in Brighton Park, of all colors and nationalities, are decent people who want the same kind of peaceful, safe neighborhood you do. It's worth hanging in there and fighting for.

Ted! Fellow Res 's avatar looks more like a fed-up old man! And whether you like it or not. He's got a point there. And I agree!!! The people in the immediate neighborhood MUST be the one's to make a difference. The Gov won't do a dam thing without their complaints. Or Guidance.

B.P. will probably not return to the relative paradise of 60-70 years ago in your lifetime. It's sad that you're not getting support from neighbors or law enforcement. Being the angel of change is a stressful job; at some point you may want to cut your losses and move to a nice place where you can enjoy your life.

Anyone know?

Does anyone know what is being built at the old bus depot on Pershing and Archer?

Yes! And a quality affordable restaurant!

  • Yeah, but that area is small for those two stores.

Crime in the city

Has anyone noticed whenever the media claims the rates are down, there's suddenly more shootings going on? Just wondering......

  • MrC Raised in, and serving the Englewood Community

It seems that they spoke out, but only with anonymity. They are similar to members of the community in that they also fear retribution.

  • jan in little village long time resident

MrC, you are right! People do not want to get involved, because they fear they'll be next! It's sad that this is what our society has become! But as you also stated, they can remain anonymous. But then you also have to feel comfortable with the police you're talking to, who are they protecting?
