McKinley Park Dog Park--Show your interest/support now!

I'm re-posting this to under "neighborhood improvement" instead of "pets" in case I missed anyone with yesterday's post.

Several interested community members from McKinley Park & Bridgeport are working to organize a dog park in McKinley Park. I've read very active threads on EB with people who seemed to love the idea. Right now, we are gathering names of supporters and people who may be interested in being part of the dog park action committee. We've had a decent show of support over the past 2 days, but we could use more names.

If you have interest in planning and being part of the committee (which promises to be fun, but no easy feat), please email me at mckinleyparkdogparkcommittee@gmail.com. As this project takes off, the committee will be tasked with gathering signatures from McKinley Park neighbors. If you'd like to add your name and show your support, please either send an email with your name and address/ward to mckinleyparkdogparkcommittee@gmail.com OR sign our change.org petition and we can reach out to you once the committee is formed at https://www.change.org/p/chicago-park-district-open-an-off-leash-dog-park-in-mckinley-park#.

Several people will be speaking in support at the Chicago Park District annual budget meeting at Fosco Park tomorrow evening.

We look forward to working to bring South Paws the freedom to run and play off leash that they deserve!

McKinley Park Dog Park--Show your interest/support now!

Hey, neighbors. Tuesday September 30th is the Chicago Park District budget meeting. I am going to go and voice support for the addition of a dog park to McKinley Park. Hey, neighbors. Tuesday September 30th is the Chicago Park District budget meeting. I am going to go and voice support for the addition of a dog park to McKinley Park. I know many neighbors with dogs, large and small, would benefit from having an area to let their dogs socialize with each other and get out some of that canine angst.

Although I think it is a long shot that a dog park would be included in the CPD budget for next year, I want to appear and show community support to start building momentum.

Right now, I'm looking for a list of supporters from the community and surrounding neighborhoods. Having a dog park on the southside (South of 15th street, that is) would be a HUGE community builder and a game changer for our area.

I need to bring a list of supporters from the area to the meeting Tuesday. Right now, I'm looking for your full name, either your address or your ward, and your email address. Please send to mckinleyparkdogparkcommittee@yahoo.com or you can use private messaging on everyblock.

If you have time and are interested in being involved in the actual Dog Friendly Area Committee, please let me know that as well, along with your work schedule and typical hours of availability. I'm going to be following the step-by-step process posted earlier this year by the Bridgeport Business Association (Maureen Sullivan). Fundraising will be an important component of organizing. And, of course, there will be haters, so we need people with thick skin.

I'm posting this to the McKinley Park, Bridgeport, South Loop, and Pilsen Everyblock pages. Please feel free to share with other community networking social media pages, email, etc. If you see it multiple times-I apologize. I look forward to getting to know many neighbors and dog owners and lovers during this process.

Dog Park at McKinley Park

My husband and I would like to start a new Dog-Friendly Area (DFA) at McKinley Park. There are a number of people who walk their dogs both on- and (illegally) off-leash within the park, and we think a designated area for dogs would make the entire park safer and cleaner for everyone while also more enjoyable for dogs and their owners.

A DFA is the only place in Chicago parks where dogs are allowed to run and play off-leash. They usually provide ammenities like dog drinking fountains and waste bags, and they follow park hours. Dogs must be registered and have certain vaccines to visit the park.

There are currently no dog parks within Chicago on the South, West, or Southwest sides. The closest to us is about 5 miles away. We think that a DFA at McKinley Park would improve the park and our community.

The procedures for establishing a DFA are on the Chicago Park District website. One of the first steps is to form a group of people interested in pursuing this. It does seem to be an involved process that will require petitions and fundraising, so we're looking for dedicated dog-owners and non-dog-owners alike who would like to join us in this effort. Please reply if this is you!

One of the other steps is to choose an possible location, and my husband and I have a couple of ideas. Since it's supposed to be an under-utilized area, our first suggestion is the southeast corner of the park, which has no fields or structures at this time. Our other (and I think better) suggestion would be part of the gigantic median that exists between the north and south legs of Damen on the east side of the park. I would also ilke to hear feedback on these suggestions and the idea of a DFA in general.

Thank you!

Angie, CPD only holds one budget hearing a year and only gives a weeks notice. Registration starts at 5:30 pm, hearing starts at 6pm. People have 2 minutes to talk and people are taken in the order in which they registered. If you get there at 6 you can still register and talk. I would suggest that you type up what you want to say and have your contact information on it. You can leave it with Kelly. Also, tell your park supervisor what you are asking for as word gets around fast and his/her support is vital. If you can have names on a statement that is fine. However, a PAC has weight so if it is too soon, then just take your 2 minutes. The other thing you (and we) can do is register to talk to the CPD Board. I'll have to look and see when their next meeting is. If you know Bill Drew, he has my contact information.

  • Mary,

I do not know Bill Drew. I will be at the meeting. I will try to find his contact info and get a hold of you. I will do my best to be there at 5:30. I'm also reaching out today for names for a list of supporters.

looking for a honest furnace repair person

can anyone recommend a good furnace repair service that is not to expensive. My home wall heater leaks carbon monoxide. I bought new carbon monoxide detectors to see maybe they weren't working properly but they start going off so I had to turn the heater off. I would like to have it looked at and fix before the winter.

Badly needed pavement striping on the east side of Pershing and Western.

This intersection is well known for car accidents. The striping on this side of street is so bad that when traveling east on Pershing most motorist use the left turning lane, not knowing they are on the wrong side of the street. Just to mention McKinley Park is a few feet away, along with a grammar school on the other side. Please Help.

There department city of Chicago could help traffic there mostly north side , and loop area its called traffic management authority under (OEMC) but again were not north side or loop area

I had heard at a community meeting that Pershing was a weird case ... due to funding issues, I believe. Something like no agency had clear jurisdiction over it: on the border between two wards, maybe there was some sort of federal or railroad ownership issue as well ... From what I understand, because of this confusion, there's no clear jurisdiction, or more precisely, who should pay for improvements. So they never get done. (Sorry I don't know any details.)

Looking for an occasional babysitter in the neighborhood

Hello! My wife and I are looking for an occasional babysitter for our three-year-old son. This would be ideal for a local college student, as it would mostly consist of minding the house while the child is sleeping. (We'd most likely be looking at a weekend night once a month.) We're located in southeast McKinley Park, just a couple streets east of the park.

Anyone available, or have any recommendations? Naturally, we'd want to get to know any babysitter, as well as check out references, prior to starting. You can post your contact info here (email is great), and I'll be in touch. Thanks!

  • Justin K. McKinley Parker since 2008, south sider since 1998

Thanks, everyone! Gina, I'm shooting a message to Kasandra this afternoon.

  • Good morning, I'm available for occasionally babysitting. I have four years of experience and live children. Please email me at jennyfreundt@Gmail.com. for references, resume or interview. Thank you. Have a great day.
