New Plaza on Archer and Pershing?

I'm not sure if that is what they are building on the corner of Archer and Pershing, but what if they do. What kind of pros and cons is our neighborhood looking at?

Water Shutoff

General questions looking for helpful comments: I am currently doing some work in my basement. Detected a mild leak from an old valve on the main just before the meter in my house. I'd like to replace the old valve, problem is, I have no visible water shutoff in front of my house. (No buffalo box, no pit.) Have not gone directly to water dept yet, but I was wondering if I or my plumber can do anything before having the city come out? Does the city even respond if the home owner is looking for shut down just for repair? What would be the fastest way to handle this?

  • Do you have a water meter in front of your home that is located along the front of the property? I mean the thing that looks like a small sewer cover. If you do, the meter is there and there usually is a turn valve located in there. You may...

Do you have a water meter in front of your home that is located along the front of the property? I mean the thing that looks like a small sewer cover. If you do, the meter is there and there usually is a turn valve located in there. You may need a 5 point 13/16 half in drive socket to remove the cover that looks like a small sewer cover to get to it. Your plumber should have one of these sockets or you can get one at a plumbing supply store or on Ebay and Amazon. P.S. I don't mean the meter that is directly installed in the home or located attached to the home

Once it's shut off I can see if my kitchen/bath water has stopped or if the lake in my basement stops filling up, or both or neither. Best case will be if it shuts off the water to the basement pond and my kitchen/bath water is still running. I still think there are two separate water mains from the street.

Homeless man archer and pershing

Why is this Homeless man out all year around. How can the city help him? How can we help him?
I drive by every morning on my way to work. I don't know how to help him.

He is seriously mentally ill, and there is very little that anyone can do, under the current state of the laws, which allow even those with no grip on reality to make their own decisions on how to live. At least as long as they are not committing any crimes.

He has been around there for years. I think when it becomes unbearably cold he may find a place indoors, but otherwise, that is his life.

It does seem rather odd to me that he spends a lot of time on Archer, as he does not panhandle. At least not that I have seen. Maybe people just help him out without being asked. Years ago I knew some older people who would provide some assistance, and in the hot summers we would freeze water in plastic bottles and give it to him.

I think the only thing that non-professionals can do is to educate themselves about mental illness.

  • Guadalupe Garcia LongTime Brighton Park Neighbor

He's been part of the neighborhood landscape for a long time. I have never known him to be violent, beg or act erratic. Some folks have no support system and fall on unfortunate circumstances. Some choose to live this way for reasons that are beyond our understanding. I imagine a meal, a warm beverage, cold weather gear or even a kind word would not be unwelcome. My brother speaks to him on occasion and he once offered my brother a sandwich.

Great looking out for one another.

  • He use to be staged at the abandon building next door to Dunkin Donuts on Archer. One time he was removed then the entrance way was covered with a chain link fence. The homeless man returned and parked across the street, near the gas station.

Yes he's been there so long, I believe almost a decade or more.

Whenever the winter weather gets dangerous, I call for him to be taken off the street for his safety. I'm not sure if others call, but he always finds his way back.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the new shopping strip opens up where the old Archer Bus Barn was, maybe he's just a fixture to the neighborhood.

Where Did the Tens of Millions of Dollars in 11th Ward TIF Money Go?

The City’s TIF program has syphoned tens of millions of dollars out of the 11th Ward in the form of higher property taxes and rents. But where did it go? It certainly did not go to curbing the festering urban blight along the Halsted business corridor, its intended purpose. So where did our tens of millions of dollars go?
Here are some important and interesting facts about how the City Council creating Chicago’s TIF program:

1. If two TIF districts share a border money from one TIF can transfer to the other TIF.
2. If the second TIF shares a border with yet another TIF the money can continue transferring.
3. All South-Side TIF Districts share at least one border with another TIF district.
4. By this bizarre mechanism the increases in your property taxes and/or rent can be used to build the controversial $1.1 billion DePaul arena.

Yes, building up cross neighborhood collaborations on commercial business corridor redevelopment strategies.

For example the 31st Street, 35th Street and 39th Street east/west business corridors encompassing Bronzeville/Bridgeport areas, are not organized in a way that we can collaboratively generate TIF funding for the creation of neighborhood based businesses.

A difficult organizing task to say the least!

Pete DeMay vs. Cardenas for 12th Ward alderman

Looks like Cardenas will have some competition in the race for 12th Ward alderman! Pete DeMay -- himself a McKinley Park resident -- just filed his petitions, and it looks like he'll have plenty of signatures to get on the ballot. Video here: https://vimeo.com/112881889

57% of the 11th Ward Is In a TIF District, yet the Money Is Not Being Spent In the 11th Ward

57% of the 11th Ward is in a TIF District, yet there are dozens of vacant properties and weed-choked lots along the Halsted Business Corridor*

The new 11th Ward configuration includes: Canaryville, Bridgeport, Pilsen and University Village. If you live in these neighborhoods your taxes are not being used to support your community.

Of course . Why would it be for the 11th ward. TIF funds are usually used for the donors of Rahm Emanuel to be given out in exchange for campaign cash. Look them up.

Do you know what Maureen Sullivan wants for her birthday? She wants trash cans on Halsted. She wants clean viaducts. She wants responsive government, business development, and high quality public schools. I can't figure out how to get her any of those things, but she can.

Today is Maureen's birthday and she is delivering her petitions to the board of elections, and in February she will appear on the ballot as a candidate for 11th ward alderman. As alderman, Maureen has promised to fight for a better 11th ward. She has plans to bring solar compactors, clean up the viaducts and work with the community to bring responsive government and more businesses to our community. I may not be able to fulfill her wish list, but I can help her fulfill it for all of us. Today is Maureen Sullivan's birthday and I would like to suggest a very appropriate gift.

If you are able, I would like to suggest making a donation today to Maureen's campaign. Here is a convenient link http://ow.ly/EMLrn

I happen to know that every little bit counts, and gets us closer to fulfilling all of Maureen's birthday wishes... for all of us!

Restaurant recommendations

Just moved to McKinley Park, anyone have recommendations for decent restaurants in the area to check out or order-in from? Any to stay away from? Social or community groups to check into?

  • Jeanne Marie Mondrella-Keating Real Esate Broker and Chicago Highrise Rep, Jeanne

I also don't see the gap and/or differences with language barrier. I love going to all different authentic restaurants and even if I don't speak the language, the people are so nice and I usually ask them to pick for me with their favorites -- never been disappointed either! People are good -- especially when they know you are interested in their cultures as well as food.

  • A little more further south by Brighton. Paco Taco's, Frank's Shrimp, Leon's BBQ. There is Cafe Meson on Kedzie. Try Pizza Castle for delivery. They opened a Zaytune on 35th and Western.

SRO Building on 38th and Archer

This building has 20+ units. The number of garbage cans cannot support the tenants. A building on this size should have a dumpster. It's mouse season. I live next door to the building and am concerned.

Cigar tubes?

I am looking for a few (1 or 2 dozen) metal / aluminum cigar tubes, any ideas?

  • C. W. concerned home owner

A few years ago, I needed cigar boxes and went to a tobacco shop. One store gave me boxes for free and another wanted to charge me for them. So if you go to a tobacco store just ask one of the people who work there. Good luck.

Attempting kidnapping-CPD does not care

My daughter was walking to school at 4:50 pm to go see basketball game and when she was approached by two men in Gray SUV told her get into vehicle One was in the driver side and one was in the back passenger side it was in the corner of Pershing and kedize daughter ran to Davis school and talk to office personnel they called police and still waiting for them to show up its now 6:43pm wife it's on hold CPD.

  • was thinking about the chicago police. i"ve always thought that the CAPS program is what really helped us the most. and the officers themselves were great. it seems thou that the funding for that program has been cut over the last few years. they dont have the resources to support a good program. that is policy that comes from the top. what ever the big vision from our leaders is, it isn't working.

  • archer and kedzie archer and kedzie

I got a letter from Davis about this incident and it really concerns me I hope somethings done about it. Thankfully she's ok
