DUI Checkpoint on Milwaukee?

On Monday evening I was walking south on Milwaukee from the Western stop and noticed a bunch of cops checking drivers at the intersection by Irazu. It looked like it was a DUI checkpoint, but it seemed odd to me to do that at about 6:00 on a Monday (wasn't the Bears game Sunday?). Anyway, wondering if anyone knew if it was in fact a DUI checkpoint or if they were looking for someone/something else.

Thanks

That the "checks can be done at any time" and, presumably at any place, is exactly the problem. I don't see a clear limiting factor to this power over our fourth amendment rights. In 1990, the US Supreme Court narrowly upheld the constitutionality of sobriety checkpoints. Even today, not all states allow the checkpoints and those that do usually require advance public notice of them. Seatbelt checkpoints have not been tested by the US Supreme Court. Unlike drunk drivers, those not wearing seatbelts only pose a danger to themselves. For the court, then, this might not be a reasonable pretext to the seizure of the innocents' time.

To my mind, the job of a citizen does not begin and end with aiding the police in their work. It also lies with understanding and defending our hard-fought-for rights. My original post was in response to the premise that all of us in the community welcome this behavior by the police. I do not, and I can do so while applauding the other good work that they do. These are views that I need not express in a CAPS meeting. They are more appropriately expressed in a voting booth.

Now let's think what the officer is going through, the officers are there to right safety belt tickets, not give breaks! Everyone has a story about why they were breaking the law and not be given a ticket. Some people believe officers MUST listen to their stories and that they should be excused for breaking the law. How about telling the officer, you are sorry for breaking the law, that you deserved the ticket and see how the officer reacts to your honesty. Bet that one has not crossed anyone's mind or that is what they would have done if it did. Happy Thanksgiving neighbors.

Still hoping to reunite this friendly little guy with his family. Found on 11/17 near Barry and Christiana.

"Fresh Market" on Western, formerly known as Danny's

Does anyone know anything about the "Fresh Market" being built on Western? It's at about Western and Shakespeare, across from a small strip mall. It seems to have been in the works for a while, not quite sure if they're making too much progress. I live nearby but wanted to see if anyone had the inside scoop.

Thanks!

Second, the owners clearly made it their priority to focus on the demographics of the neighborhood. So you have everything from a fabulous selection of tortillas to natural peanut butter and raw almonds to gourmet chocolate bars. There is also a loverly bakery counter and cold cuts selection. While this grocery store is small compared to the new mega Marianos, I think you will find most of everything you need here. Kudos to the owners, this is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and I applaud all the thought that went into this grocery store. I have lived in Logan Square for 25 years and you can count me as one of your new customers.

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:
1. in street mounted signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK are visual cue that enhances Pedestrian Safety. Milwaukee Ave location has 25,000 vehicles/day AND is heavily used by pedestrians day & evening on City designated PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET in heart of vibrant Logan Square business district.
2. signs are intrinsically subject to wear/damage and getting plowed over by (idiot) drivers
3. CDOT/City annual budget should anticipate replacement cost for these signs, like replacement of Stop, Tow Zone, No Parking etc which come from City budget, not Alderman ward menu funds
4. Red Light and Schools/Parks cameras bring in ~$100,000,000 per yr. It's not Mayor Emanuel slush fund to plug police overtime etc. Public Safety & real leadership means: take some of that $ and pay to replace damaged signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK as needed.

The DUI KING of City Council, Alderman Rey Colon offered this comment in Tribune: "These signs are very popular with constituents who request them often," Colon said. But he said the average life of the signs "is like freshly cut flowers that wither and die."

Alderman: it's time for your political career to do the same.

  • I think those little buggers should grow by three feet, glow like a sci-fi show, and be made of METAL. That would teach people real fast to pay attention and stop running over the little neon man!

  • I dunno...Many people who hit those signs don't take care of their cars anyway, so adding some scratches to go with the speed holes and fart cans (mufflers) won't matter to them...

Recommend Company to do Network and A/V Wiring for New Home?

We are building a new home in Logan Square, and need some expertise on the Network, Audio/Visual wiring design of the house.

Our electrician says he can run the cables any way we'd like, but we were looking for someone who can help with the design, picking the correct materials and making sure the right work is done.

Any recommendations?

  • Again I agree 100 percent with Keith. They set up everything in our home and recently came back out to install another TV for us. An added bonus is they are so mindful of your time and so clean!!!

  • Its actually called

After being in our location for 2 years, we've suddenly had mail returned to a couple of different senders with notices like, "address unknown," or they'll say they attempted 3 times, even though there was no notice and I was home each of the dates listed on the "attempt form." I have verified that the address was correct on the letters/packages that were returned. We still continue to get all our junk mail and ComEd bills as well as other peoples' mail, but now we're missing stuff. Any suggestions or input would be much appreciated!

Julie, I suggest that -- unless the mis-delivered mail you receive is within a house or two of being correct -- you take it back to the Clemente post office in person. With evidence of faulty delivery in your hand, you have much more power to complain about your own missing mail. When I did this a few years ago, it received much more attention than the simple "my mail is missing" message.

I agree with the other posters' observations about regular versus substitute mail carriers. The performance of the latter only serves to underscore the notorious reputation of the post office.

The quality of delivery accuracy to me has improved over the past two decades. However, my experience with neighborhood mailboxes has gone in the opposite direction. At this point, I drop all outbound mail only at the Clemente post office. Forgive me if this is a thread hijack, but I wonder how many others have been likewise trained by negative reinforcement into this habit.

Buster, It looks like you were skimped on the size of your slice. I understand the thought of paying $5-8 for a slice of pizza is a little over the top but my wife and I were able to get dinner for $25 and were very full and satisfied. There aren't many places to go grab a quick dinner for less than that.

nosara: that was 3 slices for 2 people.

  • I went on Friday night, place had a good ambiance for being small and line was out the door. We had to get moving so stood in line to take a slice to go, and no carry out? I've never heard of a pizza place that doesnt do carry out. Still cant wrap my had around it.

Really tired of moving into places that haven't been cleaned properly and am offering up 50+ years of advice. Forget all the thousands of cleaning products and just use these: (I'm not affiliated with any of these products, I just know that if you maintain-- even a rental little cleaning issues never become big ones and when I move in it wont be so hard...)

Clorox Clean-up with bleach spray. Miracle product. Spray on dark corners(mold) in the shower leave overnight. Spray on darkened dust filled floorboards leave a minute and wipe away. Use lightly for every type of cleaning. The best product money can buy.

Plain old Clorex. Need to clean venetian blinds? Fill bathtub with water add bleach and soak the whole blind. Cleans to new condition in a couple of hours.

Wood surfaces-- light colored use Murphy's Wipes (not the bottled kind) dark surfaces Method's Wood Wipes.

Glass showers spray Method Daily shower spray after every shower (2.99)another miracle. For those plastic floor trays after using Method spray a while, use Mr. Clean sponge erasures and scrub away stains. After initial cleaning, you wont have to do this often.

Stainless cleaning Nano stainless spray.

Lime buildup around sinks and knobs, Durgol from sur la table. Cost $20 a bottle lasts for years--Miracle!

When moving into a place that previously had a pet--spray Siphor plus II Fat-Acting Spray (Amazon.com) around perimeter. Dries fast non toxic kills almost all bugs.

Invest in one of those $39.00 Furnace cleans sold on Amazon local.com. Totally worth it, to clean out dust buildup. As well, buy those 99cent furnace filters and change the first of every month. (If you change every month you don't need the expense ones.

  • Gil Jimenez, I am also a landlord. The OP's first sentence reads, "Really tired of moving into places". His argument should be stated to his landlord for renting him a dirty apartment.

  • When I moved into my two previous apartments, I spent 4 days straight cleaning from top to bottom. Completely disgusting. But I refuse to live in someone else's filth and dust. [Most] landlords just don't care.
