Hi All - I just wanted to make everyone aware of a new business in the neighborhood that is a great resource for the community of Logan Square. Five Point Holistic Health is a community acupuncture clinic located on Fullerton just west of Kedzie that opened in May of 2014. I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

  • I can't speculate on how the practitioners at this particular clinic will address lower back pain, however in my experience all back pain can effectively be treated in a reclining chair with points other than those on the back (and without needing to disrobe at all), so a community type treatment could certainly work.

Thanks, Jill. My degenerated discs are L4/L5 and they're pretty bad (genetic and 8 years of year-round volleyball are to thank). I've had some excellent deep tissue massages and I've had enough physical therapy to know exactly what stretches to incorporate into my daily work outs but when discs are degenerated so severely, very little will help a certain type of pain. Thankfully, that level of pain isn't around daily but if I can find a holistic preventative measure in addition to the yoga, swimming, stretching, etc. then I'm all for it. I'm not opposed to private or group, which ever will deliver the best results. Thanks again, guys.

I am actually asking mid-range fifteen hundred for two bedroom and get offers of 2000-2500 for the same units because the Bro's and Trixies are speculating on Mega Mall site. There is no "community" as of yet in LS, what community that was there was is being torn apart by gentrification and I am just waiting to see what rises out of the dust of all these new builds. Not ready to sell just yet I am thinking in a year or two when these new builds (thousand bucks for a efficiency) come on line I will cash in and depart LS.

Until then I will continue to weigh in AA, because I own and truly the only people that matter are those that own.

Moms Group/ Play Group in Bucktown or Logan Sq?

I am a new stay at home mom w/ a 1 yr old boy. I'm wondering if theres a play group in my area we can join?

  • I also have a one year old boy and am home with him Tuesdays and Fridays, and I'm interested in activities/play dates between his morning and afternoon naps -- so late morning/early afternoon. We live near Goethe elementary. I would love to meet some other moms and give my son more exposure to other kids his own age, so feel free to message me if you might be interested.

  • I live in Bucktown and have an 8 mo old baby boy....I'd love to meet fellow Bucktown moms. I do not do Facebook or any social media so this is my only way of getting out there. Message me please if you are interested. Thanks so much!

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

  • Are you serious Ethically Engineered? I don't think it's an excuse I think it just so happens to be the truth. You sir are low to judge her because she is rehoming not disposing mind you 2 cats she could no longer care for.

  • tossing ones responsibilities off on others is now called ¨rehoming¨? Oh no, companion animals have fur. Welp, who knew? Out they go. That's super low.

Graffiti

I've seen this particular graffiti popping up around my neighborhood. Anyone see it elsewhere or know who it's affiliated with?

  • This (for now) toy needs to learn the code, and responsibility of being a graffiti writer. There are definitely places where writing of any kind is unacceptable. This is that. It must be one of the new students at Colombia, or SAIC. Seems to happen every year around this time. A bunch of scrubs come in from the sticks and have no regard for the writers code.

  • Artist girl Artist and Muscian

Some graffiti Artists are very talented. What they do is actually art. This isn't talent. this is just someone marking territory with a few lackluster symbols. He is like a dog lifting his leg on a building to mark his territory so that he can appear to be important, which he is not. If he really wants to get a name for himself as a graffiti artist then he should really start making art. Some examples of graffiti artists that make more of an effort - https://www.google.com/search?q=talented+graffiti+artists&biw=1495&bih=917&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=CUccVNnTF9WvyASxlYHIBQ&ved=0CDkQsAQ

Donation pick-up?

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). Anybody know of anything? If not I guess I resort back to Free Stuff (and accompanying flakes) on CL and the Mysterious Alley People and forgo my tax deductions.

If you want to support local business owners (and specifically the owners of Masada), go to Sultan's Market on North Ave. Same owners, better quality, better value. It's just absurd to spend $12 on a kefta kabob sandwich (that comes with NO sides), when you can get a better kefta kabob sandwich for $5.75, from the same people, one mile south.

  • Thanks, Saibaa. :) Definitely agree that Sultan's Market is delicious and a great deal, just wanted to point out that I personally love Masada and would recommend it to someone looking for a tasty meal in a fun environment; I think it is at least worth trying once for a newcomer to the neighborhood.

They checked that I had help and left me. I immediately started walking south to the gas station on Fullerton and California. I was gone about ten minutes. When I returned it was gone, though a hubcap was still on the sidewalk.

The person I talked to at the police station said that it is likely that someone perhaps with a tow truck saw it was broken down and took it. It would have been very hard to get gas for it and steal it in the time I was gone. I do have all the keys.

If anyone was in the area at the time or saw anything suspicious, please let me know. Thank you so much.

Sawyer/wrightwood street lights out STILL??

Okay maybe someone posted about this already. It's been I feel a couple weeks now that the street lights have been out on Sawyer between Atlgeld and Wrightwood. Now I don't come home late at night often but when I do I certainly don't feel safe not being able to have a well lit safe street to park and walk on. I already called the aldermans about this. Anyone hear anything????

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

Call your alderman. With I'd usual stunning foresight, the city did not hook 311 directly into Streets and Sanitation (the people who change streeights, fill potholes, paint over graffiti...) and it takes quite a while for 311 to get their paperwork over to S&S. Your alderman, however, can dispatch a S&S crew immediately to handle the issue.

  • I put in a 311 request but when I go to check the status it says the ticket doesn't exist. =\

They are out beyond Altgeld-Wrightwood as well, at least 2400-2600 and possibly further south, I didn't wander around in the dark to check.

It should be allowed IMH as long as it's a person and not a huge realtor/rental agency. There are often posts for people looking exactly for this on EB (as well as good places to eat, drink, do on weekends, etc.). As a landlord myself I often think about posting here (my tenants are thankfully long term so I haven't yet had the need). Perhaps this should be something that could be allowed the future.

  • IF EB is not removing the post then it is ok..........its is the housing section after all. Does it matter who post? This is site owned my a MAJOR corporation all we provide for free is data. Don't listen to these "hall monitors" on EB with nothing to do.

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

I swim there occasionally--when you buy a park district lap swim pass, it's good at all of their pools. Compared to the other park district pools I've swam at, I'd say Koz has less than the average amenities but is still adequate. There are no lane lines, and there's no sink or mirror or hand dryers/paper towels in the locker room. So if you go to the bathroom you have to wash your hands in the shower and dry your hands on your own towel. Forget about styling your hair or drying it. Not the end of the world, but not ideal either. The lack of lane lines has always unnerved me, and it seems like it would be a problem if the pool was really full, but I've never actually seen it get really full so maybe it's just not an issue. It's typically filled with more casual swimmers rather than competitive ones.

And yeah, many of the park district locations do not update their schedules online promptly so it's always best to verify all the info you need to know while you're actually at the pool, especially around holidays or seasons changing.

The first time I went, I was very confused about the layout--you walk straight ahead until you're actually inside the pool room, then show the lifeguard your lap swim pass, then proceed to the right for the women's locker room. (Most places you go in the locker room first.)

  • I used to swim at this Park District pool years ago and it was free. All Park District pools were free.

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

  • There's a similar sign on eastbound 290 and it's BRIGHT - like blinding bright. I often wonder how no accidents have been caused by drivers whose vision was temporarily impaired because of this sign.

I am not looking forward to these signs going up in the neighborhood. I live near Burr Elementary so I'll be smack dab between 2 of these signs.

  • Agree with No yolk. Rahm has no problem putting extremely bright signs in the neighborhoods, but thinks they don't belong downtown because of light pollution. Why is it light pollution downtown, but not up here? There are plenty of nice skyline views up here that are now blocked by ugly signs.

Cars speeding down Hermitage to/from Kennedy

It finally happened. Last Thursday, a car heading south on Hermitage from Armitage/Kennedy hit a car that was either parallel parking or pulling out of a spot at about 1950 N. Hermitage.

I've only lived in the neighborhood a few months, but cars regularly treat this block of Hermitage like a drag strip. It's pretty alarming. The guys from Orloff auto shop drive cars around the block like it's F1 track. It's annoying.

I feel badly for pedestrians who have to cross that intersection to get to the Clybourn Metra station. I would guess cars probably zoom extra fast northbound blowing that light frequently. Perhaps a red light camera would put a damper on this.

Over two years ago I watched as my father who is virtually blind try and cross Leavitt at a three way stop with a line of traffic waiting at each stop sign. He held up his hands as he entered the crosswalk and cars simply swerved around him like he was a mere obstacle on a driving course. When cars get lined up there they think since they already stopped once while in line they don't have to stop again when they get to the intersection and they have little patience for pedestrians.

After seeing this I decided to do a random sample study and spent a bunch of hours taking videos of a lot of stop signed intersections here in Bucktown. My conclusion: More than half of Bucktown drivers have no respect for stop signs which means more than half the people reading this treat stop signs as stop only if there's something to stop for like another car not stop because that's part of rules of the road you were supposed to have learned when you got your drivers license. I suspected non compliance was going to be high but not that high.

You could get a camera and tripod and try and capture the situation at Hermitage and Armitage but it takes time. Each of my sessions took 1/2 hour sitting there collecting data. I only put two videos up on youtube because they all show the same compliance rate. Here's one I liked because Holstein Park is nicely lit in the background.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hK-FOqC29E

I was thinking of doing another set, perhaps shooting cars that don't stop for pedestrians at crosswalks like at the Map Room but it takes a lot of effort and in the end, no one cares and nothing can be done to stop reckless driving until we all get self driving cars that are programmed to follow the rules.

A close reading of that inspection indicates that an awful lot of what they were failed over is things that were not physically even on the premises at the time the inspection took place. Those are pieces that had not been supplied, and could be on back order, either by the vendor who did the installation, or the company being contracted for their waste disposal. Not a big deal. Just seems a bit like a rush job, or they had locked down the date for inspection, and as things tend to happen. Does anyone have experience with, or can refer me to someone who has, buying commercial real estate? My business is losing its lease in a few years, and I'm considering buying something with maybe an apartment attached? It's very difficult for us to find space because we have pretty unique space requirements, so I'd rather not have to worry about leases ending ever again.

I know the rules for commercial are different from residential, so I'd love to just casually get some info without any pressure. Or, if you have experience, you can post your story here...

Story of the day: I was biking in the rain down Division passing Wood, in the Wicker Park neighborhood headed home. The roads are wet so it's very dangerous out for bikers... I had seen a police car texting while driving. The police officers were probably from 13th District or 14th District. I called them out on texting and driving, informing them of the dangers it can potentially cause for bikers and other motorist. They pull up next to me...

They pull up next to me lower the window and the female officer in the passenger seat told me to "Mind my f*cking business" I replied "He's texting and driving" The male officer driving swerving on the street and talking to me while driving suggested that "I was hating" I replied with, "I'm not hating, it's dangerous out here" He replied "THE LAWS DON'T APPLY TO US" at that moment I looked into the car and responded "We're all humans regardless of uniform" The female officer kept yelling but I'm not going to waste my time and give the cops a reason to lock up another Latino in Chicago.... "The laws don't apply to us" the police officer's words are now forever tainted into my brain.

  • Big Al WP Big Al, Your Neighborhood Pal

OK everybody, let's just chill. I have two rules of driving and now it can be expanded to include bikes. My first rule of driving is "When you drive (or ride), act like a doctor and take your "patients" with you." The other one I included in my prior post. "Don't explode, share the road." Drivers, please check your mirrors when getting out of your vehicle, so you don't "door" a biker. Everybody be safe out there.

  • Good advice, Al. Now, would it be equally prudent (and safe) for all bikers to understand they are subject to all rules of the road drivers are, including stoplights and stop signs? 3...2...1...awaiting the first bicyclist to whine that they are not. They are. I drive, I bike, I observe the traffic laws and shouldn't have to have my head on a swivel because another party - car or bike - doesn't drive or ride defensively.

Hard to believe

Such mixed feelings on how the neighborhoods changed.
At Sawyer and Wrightwood. Apparently this 20-year-old white girl has called the cops because someone hit her bumper. Two scratches maybe.

  • Small dings and scratch are part of the social contract one agrees to by parking on a public street.

  • Carter O'Brien my kingdom to end the Belmont bus bunching

Well, there is a reason they are called bumpers, right?

But on the other hand, without more details it's hard to know what might have happened. If someone's selfish behavior is going to cost me cash out of pocket, hell yes I'm reporting you. I've had a few times over...

Well, there is a reason they are called bumpers, right?

But on the other hand, without more details it's hard to know what might have happened. If someone's selfish behavior is going to cost me cash out of pocket, hell yes I'm reporting you. I've had a few times over the years where cars parked literally on top of my bumper, in those extreme cases I've had to get a buddy and physically lift up and move a car off (in which case I feel no shame stating said car was placed somewhere I assume it got ticketed if not towed).

m123 - let's stay grounded in the discussion as it pertains to Logan Square. I grew up in and around Lake View and Logan Square, and taking the other extreme position and claiming white people only visited the neighborhood to buy drugs is just incorrect.

Most kids avoid gangs. But it's easier to do for some than others. There was no pressure to do so on my block, we had factory workers around who kept the wanna-be tough guys in check. But I had a friend who committed suicide in his early twenties, and I know that one of the things that led to it was his struggle being a non-gang affiliated Mexican kid in Logan Square. He got harassed everywhere he went, he ended up moving, but he still went home to see his parents, friends, etc. He talked about it a lot.

My point was simply that in a city this size there will always be young men who band together and cause varying amounts of trouble. I tell everyone the same thing- adults, get outside and do something positive. Garden. Shovel. Sit on your stoop and talk to your neighbors. Walk your dog. Law abiding "regular" people outnumber the serious thugs by an order of 10 to 1, easy. But complaining on the internet, apathy and letting those people think they own a street and do whatever they want without repercussions will destroy a neighborhood.
