Ticket for expired registration - can I contest?

Thanks to the diligent parking enforcement, I received a ticket for Expired Plates or Temporary Registration (Code 0976160F). While I am guilty of not affixing the sticker, I had purchased and received the sticker a few days before the expiration month. My question is that if showing evidence of renewed registration although not on display is grounds for waiver of the $60.00 ticket. Trying to get some input before I contest via mail. Any advice or past experiences will be appreciated!

  • Yep.. Been there done that, it's a revenue generating ticket, they don't care if you bought it before or after..

As it (thankfully) begins to get warmer in our fair city and shoveling/Dibs wars taper off, tulips start peeking out from underneath the last tiny mountains of snow, and business owners start cleaning off their patio furniture, we're onto the next great problem: rat season! Hooray!

So, rats are obviously a problem in Chicago. I'm not sure how this differs from neighborhood to neighborhood, but our block has had it pretty bad for the past few years (we live on the east side of Holstein Park). I live in a two-flat, and my downstairs neighbor wants to put poison (packets and loose pellets) down in our backyard. We have two dogs, and while I am also horrified at the thought of rats taking up residence (literally) in our own backyard, I don't feel comfortable with a life-threatening substance being scattered around our yard. Besides the obvious ecological/wildlife threat, it poses an immediate threat to our pets and isn't a true solution to the problem. (I should mention that this neighbor is great and does a ton of handy-work for our landlord; we just don't see eye-to-eye on this issue).

Neighbors: any thoughts? Does anyone know how the City of Chicago is dealing with this? There's a place to call 3-1-1 on the website, but I'm not sure what their course of action would be, so I'm hesitant to report it. How have you guys dealt with this, if at all? I also plan to plant a veggie garden this summer, and I have no idea how to keep it from becoming a rat hotel. Help!

  • The city does rat baiting, apparently where they bury rat poison underground, and it appears to be very effective. I hardly ever saw rats near my place a couple blocks east of Damen between North and Milwaukee 10-12 years ago, maybe just one or two over a 3-4 year period....

The city does rat baiting, apparently where they bury rat poison underground, and it appears to be very effective. I hardly ever saw rats near my place a couple blocks east of Damen between North and Milwaukee 10-12 years ago, maybe just one or two over a 3-4 year period. Starting around 2008 spottings became more and more frequent, though, until I was seeing at least a couple every week in 2013. That winter, the department of streets and sanitation posted a sign on a telephone pole in the alley saying they had buried fresh rat baits, and immediately afterwards the frequency of sightings plummeted. So apparently what the city does really works. You may want to call the new alderman and complain as soon as they have their office set up after the election.

Of course, whether or not the city has enough money to continue doing this is another story...

There was a very helpful, in-depth thread on this issue in the last month. The city rat patrol treats existing rat holes by depositing commercial bait in the hole and then putting a rock/brick/dirt over the hole so the rat eats the bait before he is hungry enough to dig himself out. Calling 311 wont help in your back yard as they wont cross your fence to treat unless you meet them there. I agree that leaving loose poison around is unneighborly, and with moisture it gets moldy after a few days and may not be too appealing to the vermin.

Coyotes in Humboldt Park PARK

As I walked my dog (on leash and picking up after her) in the Park today, a city worker was driving around stopping to tell any dog owner he saw that they had spotted coyotes in Humboldt Park Park. It sounded as if they had been aggressive towards dogs but I don't have any facts...but I thought 'terrific' the city would send someone to do so.

#73 bus schedule

Does anyone know the best way to advocate for an extension of the #73 Armitage bus schedule? Right now it stops before 7:30 on weekends, which no longer matches community need, especially once the trail opens. I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

  • Exactly. I thought a bus starting on Elston up to Belmont and then going over to Clybourn down to north at the El Station would be perfect, but the CTA does not think like that.

  • There was an Elston Ave bus line, closed in the early 90's. One of my neighbors was forced to move so she could access her job.

Routine Traffic Stop Ended In A Police Car Chase.

Police stopped a vehicle in front of the logan square blue line, when they asked the driver to step out (Police already had his on his gun), the driver took off. He sped down Milwaukee ave and dangerously turned into the boulevard where he crashed against a parked car in front of NewWave and ended hitting a pole. They immediately handcuffed him, and gave him the medical attention he needed before they drove away.

I overheard someone say it was a stolen vehicle.

Very scary, Very real.

  • Saw all the police cars, ambulances, and the wreckage tonight and wondered what had happened but could tell from looking that it was some kind of a car chase gone awry. Thanks Stefania

18X22 ROOM FOR RENT
May 1st

I am looking for a non-smoking, peace loving, cat friendly neat individual to rent a beautiful room in an amazing Arts & Crafts building in the Fullerton and Western area; tree lined street, easy parking, tons of public trans, very safe neighborhood.

The 18X22 room is in the front of the apartment. It is very private, almost like having your own studio apartment. There is a faux fireplace, stained glass windows, ceiling fan, and the front of room is all windows, so lots of light. The apartment is on the second floor so it feels like you are in the trees. The room is large enough for sitting area, office, and bedroom area. Built-in book shelves. Beautiful!

The kitchen is huge and modernized, dish washer, walk in pantry, kitchen is furnished. The bathroom is also huge and very nice, clean, subway tiles, ceiling fan. The coin laundry is in basement. There is some storage available. OK for bike in basement, real safe. 3 units in the building, so the building is quiet. I have 2 cats. No more pets are allowed.

$650.00 per month everything included (rent, utilities, cleaning supplies etc. and housekeeping.) Phone & internet not included. $650.00 security deposit and references required. Apartment available May 1st (preferred) but could be as early as April 15th or as late as June 1st as well.

This is a total shot in the dark, but I'm wondering if anyone who lives on the block of Belden between Kimball and Spaulding may have happened to witness a (probably) large car that was (maybe) reddish or burgundy in color smash into the front side of my parked car?

This piece of human garbage did not leave a note, but did leave an enormous dent in my car.

  • Yes - file the report with 311 (or stop at the station) and get the report number. You'll need that to file with your insurance company if you want to get it fixed. Unfortunately, unless you figure out who the culprit is, you'll be stuck with the deductible for your collision coverage (assuming you carry that).

I got it replaced with an "after market" converter which apparently has significantly less of the precious metals the thieves steal them for. So supposedly they get very little for them and pass them by for original cc's or OEM replacements which have all the metals. They should throw the book at these guys big time if they ever get caught. No reducing charges to some minor crime.

This is even more important if she doesn't have a micro-chip. Unfortunately a new Chicago ordinance (passed in Nov 2014) removes the vital stray hold period for puppies, kittens and cats who do not have micro-chips. If a puppy, kitten or cat is brought to CACC and doesn't have a chip, there is no longer a stray hold period that gives owners time to find their pets. Where to sell used mattresses?

My middle-aged mother is moving to a smaller apartment this weekend and no longer wants, needs, or has space for her queen sized mattress and bed frame. I don't really want to go the craigslist route because waiting for a legit buyer (as opposed to a cashiers check scammer) and then trying to coordinate pick up is more of a hassle than I'm willing to deal with this weekend. The plan for the Logan Square development will feature 18 parking spaces, two Zipcars and five affordable housing units — 10 percent of the total units"

So this won't be have 'SRO' /single room occupancy zoning. And to me the units are not very MICRO...or cheep. (I think the article might be mixing up the 1000sqft 2 bedroom with the 1500sqft 1 bedroom).

To me this seems like a good fit for a busy corner right by the El. This should help spread the revitalization of Milwaukee Ave further northwest.

Jerry, just because you didn't make that much doesn't mean there isn't a market for it. I can think of two guys off the top of my head that were making that much as union guys while I was still in college. They went in straight from HS so no debt.
Personally, I would NEVER pay anything close to that. I mean, my condo is half that and 1.5x the size (lol it's small) of that. But hey, it's not for everyone. Would you rather have this person rent one of these new ones and spend there cash here or take up some of the rental stock that's already dwindling as that's their only option in the area and force someone out of a cheaper apt?

I would say that it's better to get together with 2-3 friends and rent a floor of a two flat. Economically, that is the best way to go, and how most savvy young people have been doing it here as long as I can remember. Since wages have basically remained flat since 1980, any independent (ie:not reliant on Ps) young person has limited options as they whittle away at their college debt.

If you don't pick up that poop you might get flagged!

This topic has been addressed here ad nauseam, I don't think the offenders are reading Every Block- you know, pick up your dog poop! This afternoon, someone actually flagged a dog poop. I am not sure what to make of it- If you want to see this- take a look, I took a picture. (for some unknown reason, Everyblock pics are not going through)

  • Love the flags! You'd think the offender would be embarASSed!! In my neighborhood, some people pick up the poop in the plastic bags, THEN leave the bags behind. I don't like carrying my dogs poop around either~ I was picking up trash at the park, then stepped in dog poop~ I swear! A good deed never goes unpunished

  • CV in Logan Square Born and bred Sside, NWside transplant and love it

Want to stop people from leaving dog poop behind? Take a photo of the offender, put it on fliers and post them all over the neighborhood. While it is an action, a flag doesn't connect the offender to the offending act. I love my neighborhood but I am sick and tired of having to tightrope down the sidewalk (and now, the curb!) to avoid dog feces. It was a nicer place to live before Logan Square got hot and started attracting lazy and inconsiderate dog owners.
