Tuckpointing need for 1906 built 2-flat building

I went back in the archives (2011/2012?) and there was just a thread in March, but in reading it I think my 2-flat needs more work then that. Recommendations please? (Thanks!)

  • I love Marion restoration. They've worked on my 100 year old home's brick...and do a wonderful job.

  • I found a good guy who did ours for a fair price. He's going to be coming back to our block to do more in a week. pm me for details

  • DL Police officer

Lupo Masonry is highly recommended. They are from the area and have been in business since 1951. They do a lot of work in the area and are very professional 773 501 6930

Cheap hat source?

Hey all,
I'm in dire need of a cheap, black fedora -- any condition or quality -- by tomorrow. Is this something that can be found in the neighborhood? Maybe the thrift stores? Mega Mall? Any of those shops up on Milwaukee north of the square?

I'd prefer not to spend a lot, as this is just for a blues brothers thing.

Any tips would be great!

$20 to rake the yard?

Has anyone had a guy ring the doorbell to offer to rake your yard for $20? I think he's been around before to shovel the sidewalk in the winter. Sounds like a good deal but I'm cautious. Any insight?

Hello, I'm new to this site. I signed up because I appreciate the updates from folks in the area. I'm in the triangle bordered by Milwaukee, California and Armitage.

Does anyone here want to see our Alderman put up signs on existing poles that say "Respect Our Community, Do Not Litter" ? I saw these signs in Andersonville when I lived there and I believe they actually helped. Right now, I'm not sure the folks here are aware of the benefits of not dropping their trash on the street or in front of their houses.

Also, the Chase grammar school should start a no litter campaign in their early grades. It just takes a guest speaker to come out for 40 minutes once a year. That's how I learned not to litter back in the 70's. Since then, the awareness seems to have dropped off.

I'd love to here if anyone has discussed or thought about solving the litter problem in this area.

Echoing part of what Jess wrote, in addition to signs, we also need public trash cans (and someone to empty them out and dispose of the trash routinely). I absolutely agree with the idea of the signs (especially the use of the word "respect," which I think strikes an appropriate chord), but signs alone I don't think will be sufficient. If the City would place a trash can on my corner, I would volunteer to empty it, but I realize that is not how things work. Can the Aldermen get funds to install and service public trash cans in residential areas?

(Also, regarding the street vendors that are blamed above for supplying much of the trash, my observation is that litterers in Logan Square toss out a huge variety of flotsam and jetsam that goes well beyond the stuff sold by street vendors, and I think it would be actually somewhat churlish to blame those hard-working entrepreneurs for a disproportionate share of the Logan Square littering problem that clearly is not their fault. Look to CVS, Walgreen Co., and McDonald's if you want to find the source of the trash being littered in Logan Square; but more important, blame the real culprit -- i.e., the person doing the actual littering. Although no express suggestion has been made to do so (so far) in this thread, I would hope nobody would suggest that we should ban the street vendors from doing their business in Logan Square.)

  • I requested a can to be put at the bus stop next to my house at Belden and Kimball by calling the alderman and the woman who a talked to acted like it was something they do. That was over a month ago and nothing has happened yet. I wonder how long it takes to get that to go through.

Looking for Good, Reliable Cleaning Service

I posted on this topic a few years ago but with moving, remodeling, etc. etc., I was never able to get around to actually hiring a service! With that, does anyone have recommendations for a cleaning service (individual or company) for our condo in Logan Square? Trustworthy, reasonably priced, and good work product? We'd like to have them come by the house once a month (I think!)

Thanks!

  • Kelly, I've been using handybook.com for a while with good results. The prices aren't too bad and customer service is pretty good. You can try one person for a bit and switch to another if you're unhappy or just have them set you up as a regular appt with the one you like. I think there's a discount on your first appt.

  • Grace Housekeeper

I have many years of experience and many long time clients who would gladly provide referrals. I can provide you with a free estimate at your preferred date and time. For a great cleaning and even better prices, feel free to call me at 773-858-0926

  • Feel free to PM me for the contact info of the woman who we work with.

Looking for an Optical store

Hello everybody,
I need feedbacks on a really good spot to get new eye glasses. Am looking for a place where they will actually take time to help you look for a pair that will look great and not any pair because they are nice. I went yesterday to a place and the only help I got was that they pointed out to me the frames for women and men. I feel awful now wasting my time and money. But at least I got a copy of my prescription.

  • Eye Candy Optics on Division has always been very helpful

  • Kay of East Village like a good neighbor.....

As someone who wears contacts and glasses I hate the regulation that you have to get an eye exam once a year. My vision has not changed as an adult. But to get contacts and now even eye glasses you have to have a prescription once a year. That is just costly and time consuming for something I don't really have a need for. Anyone else find this to be the case?

Red light camera, diversy and California

Has anyone gotten a 100$ ticket here before? Turning left in the morning onto California is hard because it backs way up waiting to get on 94.

The pictures make it look like I was stopped at the line and the. Blew the red light, but it was yellow when I was in the turn lane changed to red as I was crossing the line

I want to contest not sure if I have any chance

  • I once got a ticket tossed because the officer failed to mark AM vs PM.

  • @alias_b: So you think saying that a person should get an RLC ticket for running a red is just like wanting to police a concentration camp. Good to know your perspective.

Nick had to fight them off alone while the owners watched.

After the initial attack, one of the dogs managed to get loose a second time.

One pit bull was white female, about 80 pounds, hanging teats, recently had a litter; the second, sex uncertain, white with brown and black spots on her back, with some kind of doggie backpack. Owners were two white males, heavyset, scruffy goatees, very short hair, balding, in late 20's to mid 30's.

We plan on attending next CAPS meeting about this, but wanted neighbors to be on the lookout.

@t-time - thanks for your words of encouragement... much appreciated. I certainly agree that there are many good people in this city but there are also a hugely increasing number of hostile people that have mostly come from other places. Chicago is just not as friendly as it was – it is a much more hostile, harsher environment all the way around, from how you are treated in the stores and streets to the ultra-violence and brutality of the crimes. Total street robberies may be down from 40 years ago, but 40 years ago it was virtually unheard of to be beaten to death for your running shoes or wallet. At most, some guy with a rusty knife would scare the poop out of you and demand your wallet. Crime is far more barbaric.

As for Beijing and Amsterdam, my point was the number of bicycles on the streets compared to Chicago. Both cities have a 100 times more bicycle riders than here with far more automobile congestion and far more pedestrian congestion yet there is very little if any hostility or animosity amongst people using all these forms of transportation. In Chicago the hostility is unbearable – regardless if you ride a bicycle, drive a car or whatever… you just don’t see that type of hostility in other places.

I just don’t think people here want it to be better anymore – they just want things to be there way and don’t care about other people’s point of view. There’s just so little willingness for people to put themselves in the shoes of the pedestrian, the bicycle rider, the commuter, the automobile drive, etc. People just hunker down and only care about their own position. While is a growing American problem Chicago seems to be taking the lead nationwide in fomenting discontent at all levels daily life – government, citizen to citizen, neighbor to neighbor.

That said, I will continue to meditate, continue to participate in the neighborhood meetings and MeetUp groups, stay involved in local government and help with volunteering to support my neighborhood and city… for at least as long as I still live here.

It might just be I need to move to a smaller city that used be like Chicago was when I was growing up – more friendly. Given that I’m an ultra-liberal, just to the left of McGovern, and a 100% vegan with Buddhist tendencies, places like Arizona are certainly a challenge to my political leans for full time living. That said, I live there for 4 months a year and the lifestyle is a zillion times more friendly – at least as far as everyday life is concerned. Just the attitude in the stores, restaurants, local government officials and amongst neighbors and their dedication to each other and community is so encouraging and remarkable compared to here.

But alas, I am a city boy and need the architecture and youth liveliness of a real city for at least part of the year. But this is why I mentioned Seattle, Portland and Denver. San Francisco would be a great option as well if it wasn’t so darn expensive. For the 8 months a year I’m in the city versus 4 month is Arizona, I’m just leaning towards giving up on Chicago. Not sure if I’ll ever do it but I’m leaning more toward it now than ever before.

Thanks again for your post and your words of encouranngment... perhaps they will help me hang in with Chicago for a little bit longer know there are folks like you around that want to make things better :-)

I leave for work before 7, and have found it difficult to get a good cup of coffee before that time. The only coffee joint open is Starbucks......not necessarily my favorite.

Anyone have any advice?

  • Roeser's Bakery on North Ave. and Kedzie might work for you. They open at 6 AM and sell Intelligentsia for a very reasonable price. I think it's like $2.75 for a 16 oz cup and $1.75 for a 12 oz. Plus they have stellar baked goods!

Babysitter/nanny recommendations

Anyone have any insight into where I can find quality and dependable in-home child care? I need someone for my 2 boys (aged 4 & 1). We only need about 20 hours/week but are having problems finding someone for these hours. Advice?

  • Emilie 5-year West Bucktowner

Finding good pt nanny candidates is tough. I interviewed more than I expected because they were a mixed bag, lots of eccentrics who were interesting people but not a good fit for us. I also had a ton of no-shows and just plain flakey candidates. Our best ones came through Care.com too. The site requires a basic background check for the nanny to even get listed. I think that extra hoop to jump gives you a group that's more serious and on the ball about finding a good fit.

  • care.com is a good site I would also check local schools depending on when you need them since teachers will be out for summer soon and depending on what school type they are coming from the are background check and finger printed already and have proof of such, also posting here or at local gathering sites like Starbucks will get to lots of people also local colleges especially early childhood and teachers in training looking to add to their experience. Good luck

Lost Passport and Debit Card East Room Logan Square

I lost my passport and debit card Saturday at The East Room on Milwaukee and Medill. I of course have replaced my debit, but am hoping someone picked up my passport. The name is Diana. My passport is a the standard blue U.S. version. Expiration date 2018.

  • Kerri Hacker chicagosinglesclub.com record label in LoganSquare

Check your messages on Facebook in the Other mailbox section... I lost my uPass and someone contacted me there when they found it. I never look at it so I had already replaced it.

  • Same as above ^^^^. I contacted a wallet-loser via facebook once as well.

***Make sure you check on facebook itself, in the messages tab to the far left on the home screen, in the "Other" folder. If someone who isn't a friend of a friend messages you, the message will, oftentimes, end up in there. It won't show up on your phone, and you won't even get a notification about it. So check manually***

  • Report your passport lost with the Chicago PD asap and possibly the Department of State. Start checking your detailed credit reports regularly. If your passport fell into the wrong hands, you could have years of aggravating stress and misery awaiting. I speak from 14 years of experience as a victim. I hope you find it soon!

I think they will do just fine with or without the OP's support.

Walked to Parts & Labor instead and our hunger and thirst was satisfied. Noticed a scraggly looking tree in the parkway on the way, but didn't call the city to cut it down. Instead, I choose to patiently wait and see if it comes back to life in the coming months.

Just like I will patiently wait and see if new trees get planted and judge not my neighbor.

It would be nice to see new trees planted. In the meanwhile I will sip more of their beer and contemplate the Latin names of trees learned long ago in Science class.

And I may plant a tree on Earth Day.

Looking for an artist friendly 2 bedroom

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking for a 2 bedroom in Logan and I figured it couldn't hurt to post here in addition to the rest of our online searching and hitting the pavement looking for "for rent" signs. The rents are going up so fast but we're hoping to find something max $1200 in Logan. Cat friendly and laundry in the building would be excellent. We want to use the 2nd bedroom as an office/studio space since we're both artists. Any leads appreciated!

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

  • I was thinking baggy shorts & $175 sandals.

Where's the retail in Logan Square?

So - Logan Square is hot and has been for quite some time now. Everyone can agree on that - but outside of coffee shops and restaurants, and bars - where is the retail? Wicker Park has a nice mix of both retail and food. With Wicker Park increasing in price and small boutiques being driven out for larger "chain" stores - why aren't new shops opening or at least relocating up to Logan Square? It seems retail from Western all the way up to the square is lacking in general. Food Food, Coffee, Bar, with the exception of a few. Is it the economy still? Just wondering your thoughts.

Bike repair

I'm looking for a place to repair my old, gnarly bike. Who do you guys rely on?

  • Lindsey Albany Ave. resident

Comrade cycles! They have experience working on every kind of bike. It's the only place I go to get my bikes worked on. 1908 W. Chicago Ave.

  • I'll second S.T. on the West Town Bikes recommendation if you want to get to know your bike and get your hands dirty. If not, I've had the best luck with Smart Bike Parts on Armitage. They do a great job at a reasonable price and are respectful of all types of bikers. I've also heard them flat out tell people that the junker they brought in isn't worth the cost of repairing and then explain why, except as a real stop-gap measure.

Logan Square Bike Ride?

Do you might love biking and live in Logan Square? Would you join a Logan Square bike ride?

I'm trying to gauge interest now, not organize anything. If >10 people reply I'll try to make an event.

Landscape boulder delivery?

Hi there, I'm looking to have a few large boulders delivered and placed in my back yard. Anybody have any suggestions?

  • Meredith W. Chicagoan since 2002; LoganSq home & busin. owner

I haven't used them, but I've seen some large stones (above liftable weight for a person) at a landscaping materials place on Lake lakestreetsupply.com Not sure if they work directly with the public/deliver, etc. Sorry, but I hope that helps.

  • This guy i remember, Fred Flintstone, works at the Slate granite quary, and he runs some beasts of burden that would be perfect for moving those big boulders for you. I think the firm is in a suburb like Bedford Park, or something like that.

Problem with newspapers and ads on porch

Our building, a 6 flat at Campbell and Palmer, has a huge issue with unwanted circulars, newspapers, and ads being delivered to our porch daily. There are 7 copies of some of these dropped every single day. We're a rental building so ownership of the porch is tricky, though my husband and I try our best to clean it off when we can. Does anyone know what we can do to stop this wasteful madness? It's such a waste of everyone's time and I hate to think of all that discarded paper.

  • Chicago Al Lifelong Chicagoan, documentarian, & time-traveler

Here's the link to the story we did at cbs regarding this very issue. I haven't seen any of these papers for a while and I'm glad this story and particularly the class action made a difference.
