Looking for local shops that do vintage consignment/sale

Hello neighbors, can anyone recommend a local shop that may be interested in buying some 1960s memorabilia? Beatles and Monkees board games and teen fan magazines. I'd be happy to just get the stuff sold, but I'd take consignment as well. I've been trying to sell stuff on Craig's List and it's tough to find buyers. eBay is another option but it's again difficult to find local buyers and I'd rather not get into the complexities and time of shipping. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

  • Alan is right You're wrong.

There is a shop on milwaukee that sells old toys / memorabilia a few doors south of rocking horse but I have no idea what it is called. That's all the help I can provide.

  • Matt B. 10 year Logan Square homeowner, dad

Also check out Bric-a-Brac on the corner of Diversey and Kedzie - they seem to have mostly 70s and 80s stuff but it's worth a shot..

  • There is also a shop just south of Starbucks on California on the west side of the street. I think it's an antique store. They'd probably be interested!

Smart Traffic Lights & Stop Signs

How great would it be to have Smart Traffic light or stop sign to help with the congestion and travel times?! I hate waiting at a red light when there is no traffic coming in either direction on the cross street. I hate stopping at stop signs when there is clearly no traffic(human or automotive) to stop for.

In the meantime can anyone really fault me for running a red light or for a rolling stop at a stop sign when there is CLEARLY no need for it.

I know the sticklers will say It's the law but come on.

Big transit oriented development planned near California Blue Line Stop

From the GGNA neighborhood group: Hello Neighbors, Alderman Moreno's office has confirmed that the community meeting for the old Max Gerber site will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th at the Candela Restaurant at 2451 N. From the GGNA neighborhood group: Hello Neighbors, Alderman Moreno's office has confirmed that the community meeting for the old Max Gerber site will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th at the Candela Restaurant at 2451 N. Milwaukee Avenue. This project team has requested a zoning change from C1-1 to RBPDw/B3.5 underlying/TOD for a fifteen and an eleven story connected towers with 253 rental units, 70 parking spaces and retail on the first floor at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

Derisive comments about the neighbors who don't share your views isn't a generally accepted debate tactic.

I couldn't make the meeting due to family obligations, I guess that means I don't get to be a part of "Busterville," fortunately you do not appear to be a legitimate non-profit community organization that holds regular meetings.

  • Was it my "silly synopsis" you found derisive? I'm curious which comments you took offense to. I know the "silly synopsis" sounded a little jaded. But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to...

But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to prove he lived in the neighborhood because they didn't believe him (and because he was too new, his findings had no merit). And when he said his data was from the US census, a guy yelled out "Census! It makes no Sense-Us." He screamed that he didn't believe US Census data and that the guy hadn't knocked on his door to "census" him...so he didn't believe the data. You're a very clever man Carter...wise...and you're more than welcome in Busterville...whatever that is. I find your tone quite derisive. Not sure if thats what you intend.

I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

Your post was addressed to "Bicyclists" and I am a bicyclist. While I was not the sole intended recipient of your message, it WAS directed towards me, whom as you point out, you have never met. This is both annoying and rude. I am not "taking it personally", I am pointing out that you are extrapolating the behavior of a single individual and applying it to a whole group, ie stereotyping.

I read your post, it was concise and clear. I don't need you to reiterate it or explain your motives.

Mr. Brettner points out that my "mommy" also told me to be careful. At that time she was my legal guardian and I was incapable of making reasonable decisions, so that WAS appropriate. Notice also that he then goes off about "Know-it-all bike Nazis" who want control his behavior. Understand that you have provided him a platform for his own stereotyping.

If the intended goal of your post really is increase safety on the public roadway, verses say, feel better after venting on the the internet by lecturing strangers about something bad that happened to you, then you should probably reconsider the effectiveness of your actions. I doubt any of these offenders are reading your posts and I expect they are unlikely to change their behavior if they are.

With such little likelihood of effecting change and evidence of annoying unrelated third parties and hosting bike-trolls, I would suggest you not post messages in this vein.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Honestly man, you definitely ARE taking this personally, which is downright silly. If you find it "annoying and rude" to utter a politely worded and non-demeaning "be careful" reminder to people choosing to engage in an activity almost anyone can choose to engage in at a moment's notice, then I'd invite you to consider that the problem is probably your sensitivity level.

Unless you've got something positive to add to the conversation moving forward, please QUIT TROLLING this post.

An unleashed border collie mix ran up to my dog while he was being walked by our dog walker. My dog was spooked and they began fighting. They were separated and the dogs owner (or walker) said the dog had shots. As my dog walker began checking my dog, the owner who had head phones on began walking away. At the time my dog walker did not notice any wounds and did not get a chance to get any of the owners info. Once he removed the collar he noticed the open wound that was hidden underneath.

My dog sustained two open bite wound injuries on the neck, bruising and missing fur on various locations. I now have a vet bill of $165.88 that I would like paid by the border collie's owner. If you are the owner or know the owner of this dog, please contact me.

The owner or walker of the other dog should have offered their information up - but if you ever face something similar, be sure to get the contact information of everyone involved, just in case. Also, offer your information as well. It's unfortunate that many dog owners think they're above the law and don't leash their dogs. I mean heck, forget the law, it's just safe for their dog AND for everyone else. May I suggest walking near that park where the fight happened? It may be a place the owners walk their dog often and you may be able to spot them and approach them about the situation. Good luck to you and I hope Brittany has a speedy recovery.

People, it's NOT ok to have an unleashed dog - it's not safe for the dog, for you, for others, and for other people's dogs! Lindsay suggested to walk around the location of the incident to possibly run into the owner again. But there's always the chance that the owner will avoid that area to avoid running into you as well. In the mean time, it may be a good idea though. I'll keep an eye out for an unleashed border collie mix. Wishing Brittany well!

I'm reaching out to see if there are any neighbors that happen to have shoes that you may not want anymore. Maybe you are purging - tossing or donating, or maybe you just want to help an artist out.

If so:
Please message me! I'm looking for more classic styles - no sneakers or modern sandals. So this could be heels, pumps, oxfords, boots (depending on what kind), flats, etc. I only have a month before the installation, so I'll probably take anything!

I live in the area, and would be happy to meet in a neutral place or make a pick up!

Thanks!!!

I went by early this morning and managed to easily lure some of them down to the sidewalk (I got one lovely, young, short-haired tuxedo female I named Monopoly and a tiny, male Snowshoe Siamese kitten I named Kimchee, both went to Tree House today for tests, exams and spay/neuter). I simply do not have foster homes or adoption floor spots for all these cats. I have a foster (but no adopters) for all the little kittens, but if anyone can help foster some of these young, healthy adults/older kittens until I can get them adopted or into other foster, please do let me know (I would have them vetted before they came into your house). They've got bad food and no shelter, and one seemed pretty underweight to me....they ate the food I brought like crazed zombies - they're obviously not being fed properly. HVAC Recomendations?

Elo Folks! Got a bit of a heating problem and it's now a bit beyond us. We've replaced the coupling, and the furnace stays on for...maybe five to ten minutes, then shuts down. Pilot light out! Can anyone recommend a local person/business who's reliable and fair? A guess is a valve is shot, but I'm not going to chance making it worse. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Seth Logan Square resident for 13+ years

Are you having to relight the pilot light each time that the furnace stops working? If so, it's most likely that the thermocouple needs replacing. This should be an easy repair. Feel free to message me if I can help you troubleshoot.

  • LEH Est. in Chicago 1973

Thanks for all your suggestions folks! Nice! Very neighborly and so appreciated! I went with Manny via "Poppyboy's" suggestion. As I said, we changed the coupling, but it turned out to be a Gas Valve and a pile up of Soot. We're AOK now! Safe and Sound...a bit of a dent in the paycheck, but so worth it. I can now recommend Manny and Sub City Heating and Cooling! They were in and out in under an hour.

Solar Panel Installation

The Citizens Utility Board is working with Microgrid Solar to provide a discount for those wanting to install solar panels on their roof. I spoke to a representative who of course told me I should sign up immediately to benefit from the program. The idea that we don't have enough sun is silly - no, we are not Arizona, however, photovoltaic panels perform better in cooler weather than in hot, so that helps.

From the flaming hippies at Bloomberg:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-29/while-you-were-getting-worked-up-over-oil-prices-this-just-happened-to-solar.html

"After years of struggling against cheap natural gas prices and variable subsidies, solar electricity is on track to be as cheap or cheaper than average electricity-bill prices in 47 U.S. states -- in 2016, according to a Deutsche Bank report published this week. That’s assuming the U.S. maintains its 30 percent tax credit on system costs, which is set to expire that same year.

Even if the tax credit drops to 10 percent, solar will soon reach price parity with conventional electricity in well over half the nation: 36 states. Gone are the days when solar panels were an exotic plaything of Earth-loving rich people. Solar is becoming mainstream, and prices will continue to drop as the technology improves and financing becomes more affordable, according to the report."

Why do bicyclists ride on the sidewalk when they don't have to?

I totally get why cyclists go on the sidewalks sometimes. I did not understand why a young guy had to speed run down Armitage on the sidewalk last night, almost plowing down my 10 pound dog. I also didn't get why the woman was riding on the sidewalk on Humboldt last night when there is the side street to the main street she could have been riding on. I also saw a guy riding on the sidewalk on Palmer, another quiet street.

Since there are so many drivers are so evil threads, I thought I would start a thread on bikers because I saw three last night on the sidewalk for no reason.

@Tom in Logan SQ The law is anyone over the age of 11 must ride in the street.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

^^^ Yeah but it's not enforced, at all.

While I'm a huge fan of name-calling on this particular topic, better infrastructure does reduce it. However, I tend to see the most offenders away from large artery streets that would (probably) be next in line to get a bike lane. Meaning, more bike lanes aren't going to solve the issue. People who do this have by doing so demonstrated they don't deserve the carrot, get the stick and use it.

    Cops. Tickets. Public humiliation.

LS Trick or Treating- Date and Times?

I'm not sure what tradition is as it's my first year in Logan Square but I wanted to be sure to be ready for any Trick or Treaters if there were to be some.

Anyone have info to share on any Neighborhood traditions?

  • I feel so out of touch! 3 or 4 in the afternoon is so early. When I was little it was a night time activity (6:00 to 8:00) for all ages. Thanks for posting, I'd never have known otherwise.

Just wanted to address the date question: It's Oct. 31.

Chicagoans may not realize that some places trick or treat Oct. 30 or by municipal fiat.

Found Ventra Card

Found a Ventra card on the sidewalk of Milwaukee, just north of Leavitt, yesterday at about 5:20pm. If you think it's yours shoot me the last four digits of your card number.

Ring lost in Palmer Square

My wife was with our daughter in Palmer Square yesterday afternoon and in the process of packing up lost her engagement ring. We've had a guy come out with a metal detector to search the area to no avail. If you by chance come across a ring in the area, please let me know. We're more than happy to offer a reward.

  • Is there a certain area? Or the whole park?

  • I have a detector. Let me know where and I can check a second time. Make sure she double checks her purse. I find things in there the third time I look. : )

  • Thanks everyone. She was sitting under a dead tree on the N/NW side of the park. We had someone run that area with a metal detector yesterday. The tricky part is she also ran a couple of laps around the track and then headed back to our home, north on Kedzie. So this thing really could be anywhere.
