Cat found

I was out looking for my lost black and white cat tonight. I did not found Mila, I did find a very hungry black and white cat in the alley of 1649 Barry. The cat has a black face with a thin white streak.

  • G.

I am praying you find Mila soon. I met your husband on Halsted. I've been looking for her. Any reports of sightings? BTW, did you take this cat home?

  • Hey Danielle, do you have some missing posters?

I live on the north side of Belmont. If you send me a PM, we can exchange emails. If you'll send me a missing poster, I will hang a few around the neighborhood.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

  • Resident of LP In Lincoln Park since 1980

We just moved my mother- in-law into Sunrise of Lincoln Park, at 2710 N. Clark. It is about between $5000-$6000 per month. I'm not sure what it is for a couple. It is an amazing place with a focus on memory care. It is worth checking out for your parents.
It would be nice to have them close by.

What's going on in Boystown?

I've lived in Boystown for two years now, and in the last few months I feel like the strip of Halsted between Roscoe and Clark has gotten… questionable. In the last week and a half alone:

1. Walking to DSW, 8 pm. Someone approaches me trying to sell cocaine.
2. Walking to dentist, 10 am. Large man calls me a f-ing f***** transvestite with my d*** between my legs. (I am a small blonde girl).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

I am an affordable housing activist who was evicted from the Chateau Hotel last June along with about 140 other elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, and working poor Chateau Hotel tenants. I hope that all Lakeview/Uptown area residents are noticing that the closing the Ambers SRO, The Sheffield House SRO, the Abbott SRO, The Chateau SRO, the Lawrence House SRO, the Astor House SRO, and other area SRO's in recent years has NOT reduced crime in the area or significantly improved the area, as Ald. Cappleman had expected when he targeted certain SROs for the gut-rehab/conversions into higher rent housing, now owned by BJB Properties and FLATS Chicago. Hurting low income tenants, 2,200 evicted in the last three years alone, causes more problems for others and does not eliminate the problems some residents and alderman thought would be solved with their closing. Gentrification hurts those that remain or move into the gentrified neighborhood as well as those forced out. If bad or illegal things/ happen, take a picture with your cell phone, if you can, and go to police. Those committing crimes, such as selling drugs, harassing pedestrians. trying to extort money from motorist/parkers, need to be stopped or charged. Bad and illegal behavior that is tolerated or rewarded will get worse.

Referendum about proposed CTA "Flyover" on Nov. 4 Ballot

There will be a referendum about the planned CTA “Flyover” on the Nov. 4 Election Ballot in the #20, 36 & 38 precincts of the 44th ward. Vote NO to protect Central Lakeview!

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

Although the original justification for the flyover was to save some travel time as crossing trains, especially during rush periods. must wait a few seconds before proceeding, That reason seems absurd to spend a 1/3 of a Billion dollars, mostly federal transit dollars, on something this unneeded. It is my understanding, from what I have read and heard, that this fly over track will need a long incline up from the current track level, to two stories above the current track level, a curved flat portion of the track high in the air, and a long downwards slope to get back to the current track level. This will likely have to be a slow zone for safety reasons, thus reducing or eliminating any likely expected wait time savings. A Chicago Reader story a few months ago (SEE:http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/cta-red-purple-line-bypass-time-saved/Content?oid=13300065) which checked the time saved that Mayor claimed the flyover would have saved found the Mayor to have exaggerated the actual time waiting for the current crossing of trains on the current tract by multitude of several times. The Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin found the flyover proposal unnecessary too. SEE: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-05-18/news/ct-belmont-flyover--kamin-met-0518-20140518_1_purple-line-cta-officials-cta-president-forrest-claypool
16 buildings in the area will need to be removed, and some parking in the parking-starved Lakeview area will be removed as well: See: http://www.chicagonow.com/cta-tattler/2014/04/price-of-progress-16-buildings-to-be-razed-for-cta-belmont-flyover/
Why can't the money be used to install elevators in all CTA train stations for the disabled? Or public rest rooms? Or escalators? Or help expand the Red Line South? Or buy more updated buses or train cars, ahead of the current schedule? These too would create jobs for Chicagoans and others, all for a much better purpose.

27 Magazine Holders

I have 27 magazine holders/cases I'd like to give away, preferably to a charity. I know that I can drop them off at one of many local charities, but I'd prefer to give them to a charity that is going to use them. Do you know of one?

  • Drewski L Lincoln Parker, teacher

Teachers use those a lot. Maybe a school nearby might want them.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

I received a warning there when the signs first went up. In some suburbs I've seen flashing yellow lights on the signs when the 20 mph limit is being enforced. This would help make things less vague. I believe that right now the signs say "on school days when children are present". By the time you see an 18 year old "child ", you probably have already been caught. Might help if they had specific hours, also. If a " child " is on the sidewalk at 6:00pm that shouldn't be a school zone violation. And, is a day in July a school day if summer school may be in session?

  • Rose real estate advisor 10+ year resident of Roscoe Village

Thanks Peter. In fact I did receive a ticket July 3rd at 3:10pm. I discovered that Lane Tech does NOT have summer school and has not for years. I had to provide physical evidence of this fact as the judge whom I contested the ticket in front of required it. I went to the school and got a letter stating this. I learned that warning tickets are only given the first 30 days a speed camera is installed. No second chances with the Addison camera.

Water shut off 5-9PM today

Just notified at 2:30PM by management that water is going to be off from 5-9PM tonite by City of Chicago for emergency repairs. I'm near Vic Theatre. Anyone else get this "late" notice or is management covering their you know what?

  • OMG

  • Just spoke with someone from the Alderman's office and the area affected should be Belmont & Seminary where they are connecting a waterline. Work will only take an hour or hour and a half, so shouldn't last until 9PM.

    Hope that helps!

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

Wow! I certainly did not expect a thread as long and involved as this when I originally posted my question! Thank you all for your responses. Shortly after the initial responses came in I visited Windy City Sweets on Broadway and bought a nice selection of candies for $6.99/lb. I think that's a reasonable price. And I discovered a couple new favorites, which was my intention. And I was happy to support a local store, which I will continue to do as I try some of the other suggestions when my supply runs out.

I actually do prefer chocolates and chewies, but my new interest in hard candies is to help me practice self-discipline. They are less fattening then cookies, pastries, and chocolates, but satisfy the need for something sweet at the end of the meal, and not as conducive to binging.

Property Tax Resource

Does anyone know of a good property tax resource such as a website to walk me through it or a lawyer.

I have successfully appealed by myself in the past. But I don't know if I got back the most I could have, I don't know if I should appeal again; if I should appeal again, I don't know if a lawyer is worth it or if I should just "make stuff up" like I did last time. All I know is my mailbox gets flooded with lawyers fishing for my business and I would prefer to pay less in taxes rather than more.

Thank you!

As a lawyer, now retired (I didn't handle this sort of work for paying clients), I'm somewhat agnostic as to whether having a lawyer prosecute your challenge is worthwhile: I've gone to these politician-sponsored seminars and filed my own there with some favorable results. I think at the assessor's office it makes sense to have a lawyer (who gets paid only if the challenge is successful). After that, at various boards of review, I'm not so certain. The problem is that the tax-assessment system is a big lottery and I believe that the assessors behind the counter throw little bones to the plebs while they give large cuts to the major campaign contributors.

water heater recommendations

The water heater in our 8 unit condo building needs to be replaced. Any recommendations on installers? Tankless?

Thank you in advance!

  • The best improvement I have ever made is getting a tankless hot water heater. I love it and had no problems. Endless hot water on demand, no running out of hot water if you take a bath then shower or have company. Saves on utilities because only heats water on demand.

  • Gas h/w heater from a Wheeling distributor was $400. My handyman was $100. $25 in copper parts. Dont get ripped off.
