Cat found

I was out looking for my lost black and white cat tonight. I did not found Mila, I did find a very hungry black and white cat in the alley of 1649 Barry. The cat has a black face with a thin white streak.

  • maybe that cat your trying to catch is a outdoor cat?

  • It's possible but she/he came within a few feet of me and ate all the food I had as if she was very hungry.

Referendum about proposed CTA "Flyover" on Nov. 4 Ballot

There will be a referendum about the planned CTA “Flyover” on the Nov. 4 Election Ballot in the #20, 36 & 38 precincts of the 44th ward. Vote NO to protect Central Lakeview!

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

There are over 200 square blocks in Lakeview (3.158 square miles, 8x8 blocks in a mile), and this will affect TWO of them -- 1%. This is not even close to a "huge chunk of Central Lakeview" being ruined. After redevelopment, it will look even better than it does today, with ratty little one-story retail dumps.

And the people voting in this referendum are mostly ones who are directly affected by the work. Even if they voted 100% against it, there's no consideration of the literally hundreds of thousands of other people passing through that junction every day. This referendum is nothing but showboating, a gimmick, a bunch of "not in my backyard" parochialism. Think bigger picture, folks!

Note that the people affected won't become homeless. They will be paid FULL MARKET VALUE for their homes, plus relocation help and expenses. Where else can you get a guarantee of full market value with no showing people through, waiting months for an offer, not knowing how much it will be?

Ellen, and part of the delay is the switching that needs to occur. Not just because the trains have to traverse the tracks of others, which this will eliminate, but also because the switches are prone to failure. And then because of both factors, the trains back up north of the switch and just sit there while everyone waits, but the browns have to take two switch cycles because both S and NB traverse and they don't often do it at the same time. But, they have to keep the browns moving NB or it would backup south of there too. But, that's at the cost of slowing the red and purple. (I *never* waited anything even remotely comparable when I came from southport.). The switching last winter was a cause of 25-45 minute delays 2-3x a week if you were coming all the way from Howard on purple or red. I stopped taking the el and drove, I had to, the el was totally unreliable and slow. It was the kind of thing where it was like getting onto a plane where the captain knew you were #50 in line for takeoff--they would tell you when you just after you left Howard going SB "well folks, looks like..." -- none of that had to do with the slow tracks, which aren't at all slow in comparison to the delays from Belmont I'm speaking of.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • Dang, I didn't know they now took speeding violations from the front?! What are times of the reduced 20mph speed?

  • There's also one just south of Belmont/Lincoln/Ashland between the Petco and Boston Market. i just noticed the sign today. As others have mentioned, it's 20 MPH. I *think the sign said it's enforced during school hours when children are present. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. 20 MPH is SO slow. Combine the school zones with all of the the slow zones because of city parks and you'll be at a crawl on many busy thoroughfares.

27 Magazine Holders

I have 27 magazine holders/cases I'd like to give away, preferably to a charity. I know that I can drop them off at one of many local charities, but I'd prefer to give them to a charity that is going to use them. Do you know of one?

  • The Black Star Project on Sept 22, 2014, has need for wooden magazine racks.
Please follow up with Dorothy at 773.285-9600 on this fine offer for magazine holders.

I checked with them. I'll take some or all of them! :)

Bus Shelter on Broadway and Sheridan

Does anyone know what happened to the Bus shelter on the corner of Broadway and Sheridan? I drove by it this morning and the glass was shattered.

  • My guess would be a car ran into it. I've seen that happen several times at other bus shelters. Once on Division and Western I was almost hit by a car that took down the whole shelter. Be careful in those things.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

  • Resident of LP In Lincoln Park since 1980

We just moved my mother- in-law into Sunrise of Lincoln Park, at 2710 N. Clark. It is about between $5000-$6000 per month. I'm not sure what it is for a couple. It is an amazing place with a focus on memory care. It is worth checking out for your parents.
It would be nice to have them close by.

What's going on in Boystown?

I've lived in Boystown for two years now, and in the last few months I feel like the strip of Halsted between Roscoe and Clark has gotten… questionable. In the last week and a half alone:

3. Walking home with my boyfriend, 8 pm. Man jumps in our face yelling that we're gross, both of us. (I can assure you, we're not).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

I am an affordable housing activist who was evicted from the Chateau Hotel last June along with about 140 other elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, and working poor Chateau Hotel tenants. I hope that all Lakeview/Uptown area residents are noticing that the closing the Ambers SRO, The Sheffield House SRO, the Abbott SRO, The Chateau SRO, the Lawrence House SRO, the Astor House SRO, and other area SRO's in recent years has NOT reduced crime in the area or significantly improved the area, as Ald. Cappleman had expected when he targeted certain SROs for the gut-rehab/conversions into higher rent housing, now owned by BJB Properties and FLATS Chicago. Hurting low income tenants, 2,200 evicted in the last three years alone, causes more problems for others and does not eliminate the problems some residents and alderman thought would be solved with their closing. Gentrification hurts those that remain or move into the gentrified neighborhood as well as those forced out. If bad or illegal things/ happen, take a picture with your cell phone, if you can, and go to police. Those committing crimes, such as selling drugs, harassing pedestrians. trying to extort money from motorist/parkers, need to be stopped or charged. Bad and illegal behavior that is tolerated or rewarded will get worse.

Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

Water shut off 5-9PM today

Just notified at 2:30PM by management that water is going to be off from 5-9PM tonite by City of Chicago for emergency repairs. I'm near Vic Theatre. Anyone else get this "late" notice or is management covering their you know what?

  • OMG

  • Just spoke with someone from the Alderman's office and the area affected should be Belmont & Seminary where they are connecting a waterline. Work will only take an hour or hour and a half, so shouldn't last until 9PM.

    Hope that helps!

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

Wow! I certainly did not expect a thread as long and involved as this when I originally posted my question! Thank you all for your responses. Shortly after the initial responses came in I visited Windy City Sweets on Broadway and bought a nice selection of candies for $6.99/lb. I think that's a reasonable price. And I discovered a couple new favorites, which was my intention. And I was happy to support a local store, which I will continue to do as I try some of the other suggestions when my supply runs out.

I actually do prefer chocolates and chewies, but my new interest in hard candies is to help me practice self-discipline. They are less fattening then cookies, pastries, and chocolates, but satisfy the need for something sweet at the end of the meal, and not as conducive to binging.
