Anyone else hold their child back from CPS

This is a big concern of mine as my child is eligible for kindergarten this fall but I honestly feel he isn't ready emotionally or academically. I decided to hold my son back and he will start kindergarten next year at a private school. My plans are to send him there until 1st or 2nd grade. Is it possible to switch to a cps school at a later date? Any advice or recommendations?

ShielaE - based on our experience, this is not the case. My daughter has a late August birthday, and her scores for the gifted / classical schools were downgraded due to her age, and she was not higher than 10th on any wait list for kindergarten; she was also reading chapter books and doing addition and subtraction, so our less-than-mediocre neighborhood school was not an option. We sent her to a wonderful private school (http://www.npeschool.org/) for two years, and continued to apply to various CPS schools. Fortunately, Decatur added a second class for second grade (we live a block from there), and she was accepted. The transition was not difficult.

  • It sounds like you have a great child and you have done alot of research on it all. Good luck with this and I'm sure everything will work out.

Found dog at Greenview/Cornelia!

Found at Greenview and Cornelia! No tags but collar says 'wrigley'.

  • My neighbor is the one who found him. She ended up calling animal control apparently, who came, picked him up and will scan for a microchip. If I hear anything else, I'll pass it along!

Fireworks in Chi Che Wang park

If anyone else is as bothered by the constant fireworks in the park as my dogs are, please call the police. Maybe enough complaints will finally get them to stop. I believe it is the people that live at 1750 West Diversey. If the owner of that home is on here, I am begging you to please stop! In addition to terrifying my dogs, they are landing all over mine and my neighbors decks and yards. Thanks

It's a long walk to 6000 North

I was at the mouth of Diversey Harbor at about 2:00PM today when my bicycle chain derailed. Before I realized what had happen, a nice young man diagnosed the problem and fix the derailment for me. I probably would have figured it out, but if not, I would have to walk back to 6000 North. Thanks again!!

Experiences with apartment searching in early spring/late winter?

Hello Everyone!

I am looking for people who have had experiences with searching for apartments with April 1st least start dates. Hello Everyone!

I am looking for people who have had experiences with searching for apartments with April 1st least start dates. Our current lease ends at the end of September, but our landlord made us an offer to extend our lease to the end of March. I have tried searching the web for information regarding what the rental market looks like during that time, but haven't really found anything.

We know that the October 1st lease starting time is one of the busiest and most fast paced rental seasons, but we may not be able to invest the time in August and September that is needed to snap up a nice apartment so we are seriously considering the April start date alternative.

So I am asking if any of you have any experience with the April start date rental market. Do there tend to be a decent amount of properties available in a variety of neighborhoods? Do the prices fluctuate at all? Is it silly to think that the market at that time won't be as ideal?

Any and all information or anecdotes you could send our way would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • Thank you all for the information. It really helps a lot!

I've gotten a ton of people come by but they expect too much; free utilities, cable and parking in my garage. But I'm very picky on potential renters also.

My house is huge (I live in the duplex upstairs) and some think they can still bring in pets (No Pets!)

    here's some pointers;
    a. are you prepared to move (first months rent + security, knowing you may not get your sec. from your current LL for 30 days)?
    b. do you want to move? you can still look, you don't have to commit - this gives you an idea on neighborhood and conveniences.
    c. what's out there (apts) that is of more interest than where you're at now?
    d. (and most important) will your credit check out?

Happy hunting and good luck - I was a happy renter until 2010; what a great time to buy that was!

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

Her contract probably prevents her from sharing this information. I would wait a couple of months, then check HealthGrades for updated office informaion

I came home to find my kitty unresponsive and barely breathing. I put her in my arms and rushed to the first place I could think of, giving CPR over her mouth at stop lights, and drove to Cat Hospital on Irving Park. They took her in immediately, were compassionate and excellent emergency care. She was almost 19 years old and she has been with us ever since we picked her up at an apple farm in Michigan. I was able to contact my son in Australia so he could say his goodbyes and nurses were supportive during the transition time that followed as our wonderful cat passed on. I had taken her there only one other time many years ago but they treated her with kindness and quick response. My regular vet is a traveling vet and comes to the house and always spent a good hour when we had her check-ups, shots, or anything else. He rents space if surgery is needed. That's why I needed to go somewhere immediately and Cat Hospital was there for us. Our kitty gave us so much joy and fun times. We miss her so.

Before I undertook my studies, Alpana directed me to The Court of Master Sommeliers (www.mastersommeliers.org), who offer a syllabus of recommended literature and three levels of testing, if that interests you. If you're looking for something more fun and casual, I can always help. If you want to study wine a bit and have fun doing it, check my website out to see if it appeals to you (www.thegrapesimple.com). That way, you can invite friends over, enjoy a few beverages, and get some instruction while doing it. Otherwise, The Chopping Block is good. Good luck, and have fun!
