Cab recommendations?

Need a cab to the airport tomorrow. Will have an infant with us. Anyone recommend a good reliable company to call that services our area? Tried hailing one last time....that didn't work....

  • If the governor signs the anti-Uber bill the cab companies are lobbying for, Uber won't be around for long.

  • Johnny Portage Park

+1 for Chicago Private Car. Better than cabs and not much more $. Definitely more reliable when you need a ride at a specific time.

My car was stolen in front of my house

Beware if you reside in the Portage Park area. My car, a beige color, 1994 Cutlass Ciera was stolen right in front of my house. The last time I drove it was this past Monday.

It isn't the teachers who bankrupt education, it's politics. You are doing a fine job playing into them.

I worked hard for my masters degree to get a well paying job. My husband, also a union employee has received training far beyond his non-union counterparts. We live a comfortable life where we are paid based on our skill and ability (the point of education and training). If you want to talk disproportionate pay, I worked for seven years for an international coffee chain in middle management while going to college and grad school. I capped out at $14.75 an hour. I was capable, worked hard, took the early morning opening shifts, and was a professional. I wish you would have the same fervor you have for this discussion towards something useful like raising the minimum wage, which hasn't increased proportionate to the cost of living.

It is easy to search for the information that suits your argument. It's another to look at the big picture. Come September, ask your child's teacher how much money they spent out of their own pocket to buy supplies for your child's classroom.

A/C recommendations

We're considering adding high velocity air to our bungalow. (We're hoping to avoid ductwork/visible units/etc - not very 1920's!) I've seen a number of threads here asking for recommendations for a/c installers, but none specifically addressing high velocity systems. Any recommendations for this specific type of A/C? If anyone has put this type in, have you been happy with the result?

  • bellyer Portage Park homeowner, Beer Lover & Home Brewer

We got a quote for high velocity a/c for our bungalow a few months ago. The system sounds like it would be perfect, but certainly not cheap. We will probably hold off on it until next year. We had Unique Indoor Comfort provide us the quote (chicagounique.com). For our main level and our attic, it was going to run a little over $18,000.

  • $18k? Wow...guess that project will have to wait a couple of years for us

After 62 years of operation (22,614 days) the Things Remembered Corp. has decided to close its remaining 16 Key Shops at Sears. At one time we had over 2000 locations that made keys. In the Chicago area this applies to only the 6 corners store and the Lawrence / Damen store.

The last day of operation will be Wednesday, 7-30-14. Until then there will be a clearance sale at both stores starting on 7-23-14.

Ownership of the 6 corners shop will be transferred to the current manager of that shop (me.) However the other shop will be closed permanently.

Due to the usual legal stuff (leases, business licenses, etc.) there will be a gap between the closing the old store and opening the new one. I have been working on this since we were notified of the closings 7 weeks ago but this takes longer that you would expect.

I would like to thank the community for its support over the decades and I hope to see you back when we reopen.

See you soon,

  • When I started as a part-timer at 20 years old, most customers (as do many now) thought that the key shop was a mom & pop operation that just happened to rent from Sears. I would often get the comment that, "I was here earlier and your dad waited on me....". Many years later the comment changed to "I was here last night and your daughter waited on me...." Now the comment is "I was here yesterday and your grandson helped me...."

This is not a good progression.

  • Well I am glad that you'll still be there, just had some keys made for my daughter a couple of months ago... She loves her BlackHawk Key :)

Nothing was wrong with the 36th. It's because Nick upset the clout in our ward. He is a good guy, but as they say "you can't fight city hall."

this just goes to show how important it is to get to know your neighbors so you can solve issues neighborly, if there was an open dialog I am sure more neighbors would not only look out more for each other, but be willing to be more neighborly. I know most of the neighbors on my block, like know them know them, go out for ice cream with them, help them with repairing their house, borrowing their tools, having an extra 2x4 that one egg you are missing for that cake and even flour. not that long ago my neighbor helped me painting my house and before that flipping a slab of concrete, giving me gardening tips, etc, etc.

anyway the neighbor could just keep it simple and always just pick up any of these:

I agree with you to a point IU. I have one neighbor (most neighbors in fact) like that. But if you have a particular household/compound of neighbors who have no semblance of empathy - no matter how long and hard you try you'll only be running your head into a brick wall.

Empathy is the glue of civilization - and some folks just haven't evolved to embrace it yet. Uncivilized.

Does anyone know anything about the Phoenix?

Hi,
I've seen that the old Stage Bar (before that Memories), at Montrose and Cicero, after disappearing for a few months and quietly reopening "under new management", is now open as the Phoenix. Does anyone know anything about it? I know there were some bands that used to come through the old place. I had high hopes that this might be a nice little live music joint in the neighborhood but I swear when I drove by the other night it looked like another tavern.

  • I saw it open a couple weeks ago, and what looked like a pretty salty character going inside. However, if you google the place it looks like it is attempting to cater to a younger audience. Maybe that guy is just a neighborhood drunk looking for a new spot.

Barking dogs

Thanks to the neighbors who had good suggestions. To those that pass judgement: I do not leave the dogs out day and night. I train them with treats and praise and bring them inside when they are barking . After 20 years, I now have crappy neighbors. Time move!

  • Dogs are here to bark to alert us of danger and strangers. having a neighbor that understand why dogs bark is a good thing. yes, to much barking also would bother the owner. It is a dog world.

  • Juan C. Ayala Belmont Cragin Resident

I have 3 dogs that bark at 1 neighbor, once I hear them barking their heads off I immediately bring them inside as I know this can annoy neighbors. Common courtesy should be practiced in these situations.

Pool Cleaner

My wife and I just bought a house that came with a pool. I've been trying to keep up with the chemicals, cleaning etc., but I'm afraid I just don't know what I'm doing. It's only been just over a week since we bought the house, and the pool is already pretty bad. Ideally what I'd like is someone that will clean the pool a couple times and also show me how to do it. I'm having a hard time finding a company. Plenty of pool supply companies, but all the cleaning companies seem to be located way out in the burbs.

  • Is it an above ground pool? Start with some shock and chlorine tablets. If it is green, use two bottles of shock and run the filter and pump for 24 hours until it clears. Wipe down the algae and continue to clean out the catch basket and flush it out until it runs clear. Halogen on Montrose has all of the supplies and can do a water test for you.

  • There are many how-to videos and articles on-line that will help you.
We have a small backyard pool and I know your frustration. Get a ph-balance check kit, and then the appropriate chemicals to adjust it, because I've found that if your ph is off, the other chemicals you're dumping...

We have a small backyard pool and I know your frustration. Get a ph-balance check kit, and then the appropriate chemicals to adjust it, because I've found that if your ph is off, the other chemicals you're dumping in will not be effective. This has been the best year (knock on wood) that I've had so far keeping out the algae and I think it's because it's not been so hot and I've been diligent with throwing in algaecide every so often and esp. after every decent rainstorm. Rainwater tends to bring on the algae and we've had a lot of it.
Make sure the filter in your pump is clean and run, run, run it as much as you can.
Not sure of the size of your pool, but if it's really bad you may need to just drain it, clean it and start over.

Stop signs optional?

I was walking the dog around portage park on Long Ave and couldn't help but notice the cars. A large majority of people don't even slow down at the stop sign. They pretend it doesn't exist and drive straight through. The rest seem to just tap the brakes. I am curious as to when the law changed that stop signs are optional. Especially given the amount of pedestrians surrounding the park.

Thank you all for your contributions. Some good and of course some bad. I appreciate the amount of responses in regards to this issue.

Minerva, stop signs are not working. I have to agree with you on that. The only positive I can see with them is that when run over they can cause some serious damage to your car.

Although a sign reminding drivers on Irving park or at other locations mentioned may seem small and unimportant it may lead to one life saved. At that point the sign that seemed so minor has become a value. How much is a life worth? I would like to think more than a sign. I understand it won't fix all of our problems. The tough ones are of course always the hardest to solve.

In terms of the stop sign at long and Warner. The optional stop sign that is. That will be a big challenge to solve. Minerva has it right, how many people should die before a problem is fixed. Maybe the city has a number for that. Then we know once that number of families loose a loved one we can get some help.

So that leaves a question for our city officials. How comfortable are you letting your children and grandchildren, spouses etc cross at the intersections everyone here mentioned. Knowing that drivers don't stop at long and Warner when will your family be passing through? Never?

This all may seem dramatic but it's reality. Sad.

  • Our Irving Woods Neighborhood, part of Dunning Neighborhood, already has a record of numerous accidents. Yet, our requests for working safety improvements are still up in the air, which is mind-boggling. Nevertheless, our plea has been documented on-line, and if this accident trend continues, then we might be setting ourselves up for another city/state lawsuit, just like it happened with the dead ash tree falling case, March 2014, resulting in almost $6 million dollar settlement.

Dog Heroes and Villains

In another post a neighbor asked 'Don't all dogs bark?'

My mind first went to Old Yeller then to Call of the Wild and is now thinking about Huckleberry Hound and another cartoon dog named Dasterdly iirc.

Where is your mind?

I also try to remember if a dog cannot bark his first line of defense may be a bite.

  • It is the owners, period. Yappy little dogs are like that because the owners hug them and whisper "sshhh" to them. Or a dog barks at the mailman ... guess what? the mailman leaves, reinforcing the dog for barking. Etc.

My last dog, a black lab/chow mix, NEVER barked. Even if I tried to actually teach him to "speak" for a treat, it was like pulling teeth. Not just because of this point, he was an amazing, outstanding, wonderful dog. Best dog I've ever had in my life. Back to the barking point: Later in his life, he growled at a contractor who was giving my wife his cell phone (long story, she knew the guy's daughter), and I didn't even recognize it until he did it a second time...I thought it was some noise outside. :)

Our current dog is a black lab/beagle mix, and he's more vocal, but he's more of an "alert" barker...if he hears something odd, he'll give an alert bark for me. But then he's all submissive because he thinks he's not "supposed" to bark. I'm trying to teach him that alert barking is very, very good and what we need. He's getting it, slowly but surely.

I need to move a couple of large pieces of furniture from my Mom's condo in Lincolnwood to my condo in Portage Park. Specifically, a chair-and-a-half, an ottoman, a floor lamp, and a small wood trunk.
Any recommendations for a company you've used and have been happy with?

Thanks in advance.

Best Pedicure in Portage Park

Can anyone recommend a great pedicure place in Portage or Jefferson Park?

Thanks.

Love Rosie at Rose nails, but be prepared to wait even if you have an appointment. I don't have that kind of time. I like Taryn Nails in the strip mall on Harlem where Gunnison cuts off.

  • DickinsonParker 20 years in Portage Park and loving it.

Kasia at XOX Salon is great. The pedicure lasts longer than other salons I've gone to.

Back to School - Math Tutoring

Hello neighbors! Since I've started seeing back-to-school ads making the rounds, I thought I would let you all know that I have some availabilities for math tutoring (K-6) for the remainder of the summer and the fall semester. I am a licensed Illinois teacher with extensive experience both teaching and developing elementary math curriculum at a variety of grade levels. I currently work as an elementary math curriculum developer at the University of Chicago. I live right next to Portage Park Elementary and will tutor in my home. I have 1/2 hour and hour sessions, and I can either offer homework help, remediation, or enrichment, depending on your child's needs. I have also done group tutoring for children in the same grade level/class. I have even offered family sessions for parents who want to better understand their child's homework! Whether they just need a little extra help or a challenge to help them deepen their mathematical understanding and excel further, I can design a program that will help your child succeed.
Please contact me for rates and availability. Have a great day!

  • Wow. I cant believe nobody commented. With the trouble our youth is having with simple mathematics, im really surprised nobody is taking you up on this.

Black N White, thanks - I don't take offense! :) It's mid-summer, so I'm sure no one wants to think about school yet - probably math least of all. I just want the neighborhood to know I'm available if anyone should need the extra help when school starts up.

Terrific, great to know! We may like to pursue some reinforcement/ enrichment tutoring before school resumes for our 3rd grader. Do you do weekend mornings? Please direct msg me with further info. Thanks.

Missed homeowner exemption, any recourse?

I was a few days late applying for my homeowners' exemption and it looks like they didn't apply it to this tax bill. The assessor's office phone is just a busy signal (yes, this is the year 2014). Anybody go through this recently? Can I just bring the proper paperwork to a branch office and get it sorted out?

  • Jean-Pierre

This year's taxes are for last year.

  • Chris, I think you have to wait till you've lived there a calendar year.

Everytime we hear someone laying on their horn for no reason we know we are in Chicago which after all is the Windy City and folks in cars do not get to talk to each other so they have to honk their horns.

We need to be sure and include these folks as well for their slice of the consultants fees:

And instead of F150s the rule will be everyone must drive one of these to work on one day and find a place to park it with no carpooling allowed either. MadMax and Thunderdome rules.

The last time I had an impatient jerkasaurus behind me honkin' off it was kid (looked to be about 14) in his mommy's soccer van. He must have been anxious to get to his drug buy. Lucky for me, we were on side streets where he would not have any opportunity to pass me so I cruised along at about 3 mph to give him plenty of time to text his dealer. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
