Hey Neighbors, I am able to offer you free tickets to see Filament's re-mount of LIFEBOAT by Nicola McCartney. I'm sure some people on Everyblock can speak to their thoughts about our 2014 production of the show. In addition to local praise for the show, LIFEBOAT was recognized on the Chicago Tribune's list of best storefront theatre in 2014!

Pest Control - ants

Friends

Can I get suggestions on local pest control services/remedies for ants? Sprays seem to have worked to keep them out at certain apparent points of entry. But my ants are quite smart and mobile and it seems 1-2 continue to find their way in. Might be time to bring in a pro. Your recommendations are much appreciated.

  • Ants aren't as dumb as you might think. If you have a remedy that "keeps them away", they'll find somewhere else to go. You're not killing them, you're just moving the problem somewhere else.

I tried the Terro baits, and they worked for awhile, but the colony always seemed to survive. The Niban and Advion did the trick for me; YRMV.

  • These are all good DIY suggestions. And if you still need a pro call Rose Pest control for a free no pressure evaluation.

Landscaping Recommendations

The previous owners of our home basically ripped everything out of the yard, laid down some sod, then never really took care of it while the house was on the market. We've got bare patches in the yard and dead bushes in the front and along the side of the house. I'm looking for recommendations for a landscaping company to help remedy our little eyesore as I have the opposite of a green thumb. Thanks in advance!

My meter hasn't been switched to outside either so I know to expect that soon but just wondering how others sprinkler lines were managed/repaired. Is it worth expecting them to repair the divot on pre-existing concrete? Thanks!

  • We had this work done. It looked terrible while they did it and I was skeptical. In the end they put everything back to where it was or better (I have fewer dandelions in the sod they laid). However, I don't know if the individual crews all work the same, etc. etc.

It took about 2 hours and I had scheduled a couple days ago when they rang my doorbell. They said as far as they knew, the sprinkler lines, grass and damaged concrete should all be done by the end of June. Crossing my fingers this is true. I read some reviews of the trail at the below link and even walked parts of it alone and with family with mixed reaction. It is beautiful indeed and close to home but not well maintained nor marked in Cook County. Also, I hear the trail's condition is a bit better next to Rosemont and further north.

It would be great to increase its use and to improve its condition to at least match the condition found in Lake County.

Big Sam, you must be referring to Schiller Pond? Are you from Irving Woods, like me? Yes, I realize the city is not directly responsible for the area, but it should have an influence over it. Des Plaines and Rosemont, based on a quick research and even being involved with Rosemont's survey, do take interests in the trail and so should we. A well designed and maintained trail and nature areas do have a profound impact on the quality of life for the residents and visitors. It even impacts the values of the nearby property. It draws people in from other areas, too, and thus can have the potential to impact local economy. My new neighbor even used some trails to commute to work at one time, thus eliminating some care emissions. He told me some trails, not ours, are even lit at night.

In the recent Chicago Tribune I quickly read about Next Century Conservation Plan for the Cook County, which will costs approx. $40 million a year with no well identified funding source. I agree with Mark Spreyer, an executive director of the Stillman Nature Center who objects to the plan by saying: "The public prefers forests," he said, "but we're getting prairie shoved down our throats.

I do believe that trees are what we need to save us from the green house effect and we need well working and maintained trails to help our families get healthy and stay healthy, to cut down on emissions and to get creatively connected to other communities.

Instead of spending money on trying to recreate the life from 200 years ago and displacing the current wildlife, I would hope that we invest the funds to improve our trails, move them away from the river, add gravel or crushed limestone and even add boardwalks whenever it makes sense. We should also improve our local camp ground in Thatcher Woods, our Trailside Museum and even provide better site programming and its marketing.

  • Minerva Performing Schools. Performing Communities.

Big Sam, I would likely pursue the local matter with the FPD and its Cook County Commissioners, if the local community would join in on the mission.

There is no way the police will ever be able to reason with the section of people that give them the most trouble or are considered to be the most dangerous. Brute force is the only thing they will understand and many times the only thing that will stop them. I'd love to see the police brutality whiners, ride with the police on the west side or in Englewood for a year to experience the garbage they deal with. They would change their tune in a minute. As i see it, you drop one of these whiners off in the hood and see how they fair getting out of there in one piece. Drop them in the holy city around 16th and Pulaski. That would be a nice place to start. Ha Ha Ha.

  • Police brutality does exist though, unfortunately. I was a victim once and have seen it myself as well. It's not funny when you are pistol whipped, slapped around by a black gloved officer after he is emptied out your wallet and thrown your handbag on the cement and taken what he wants.
So some whiners do have legitimate complaints!
But not all cops are abusive and not all "whiners" have illegitimate reasons for their police brutality complaints!

I really like my regular beef and have not found a cogent reason alternatively a tasty reason to change. My ears have been open since first encountering grass fed beef at whole foods in Houston maybe thirty five years ago. I raised my own beef in high school some ten years before that and then later bought quarters from a locker while hanging and could be told which area pasture it was raised in.

Here, in another TED talk, he describes how to make your area walkable:
"How do you get people to walk?
A Reason to Walk (Balance of Uses)
A Safe Walk (Reality and Perception)
A Comfortable Walk (Space and Orientation)
An Interesting Walk (Signs of Humanity)"

Most interesting encapsulation for me is how a rebuilt bridge in Columbus, Ohio revitalized a neighborhood, see time mark 17:40
