Whole Lotta Flies

Has anyone else noticed an abnormally high amount of flies in their yard this summer? I am loaded with them. Wondering if it's just my yard.

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

I've notice a bunch of dragonflies the last few days, too. I rarely see more than one or two all summer.

  • Lisa in Old Irving Park Designer and Volunteer Enthusiast

Yes! I have had such a big issue with them this summer and I don't know whats going on. This is the third summer in my place and it has never been like this.

Foster parenting/adoption

Hi everyone,
I was looking into becoming a foster parent. I had contacted a few people and they have been explaining to me some of the process and steps to take, but are also talking about how there are several agencies that are available out there that work with people who are trying to get on the path to becoming a foster parent. Does anyone have any experience with fostering/ fostering leading to adoption? Does anyone know of any local agencies?

  • Thank you guys!

  • We worked with Glenkirk, but they are no longer doing adoptions. Good luck with your process. I know it is very difficult, but so worth it in the end! You can message me if you have questions.

Need New Glasses

It's been too long since I've gotten my glasses updated and just found out that my optometrist of 30 years has retired. I've never checked out those storefront eyeglass chains, like Lenscrafters, figuring that they were pretty much the Little Caesars of optometry. Anyone have any experience with those, or can recommend a real eye doctor around here? Thanks in advance.

I doubt the money passes simply thru campaign donations. These became too regulated. And money may be here a euphemism for exchange/share of power. But Monsanto is a fantastically corruptive monopoly. Wait, since corporations are people now, am I offending Monstanto by saying this? So let me add a disclaimer: in my personal opinion, be it an opinion fed only by organic product. :)

You hit the nail on the head, thou, saying he never runs opposed. I think that's the point. This bully display of his (see, I can do anything, offend anyone, etc., etc.) is a part of that game. If he can offend anyone he wants, even publicly hurt them, what's the point of running against him? (Remember when he went after Emmanuel during the elections? He knew he couldn't bump Emmanuel off the voting list, but he could make him sweat and he did. That must have been a very good teaching moment for Rahm.)

Which brings me back to big business that resides in his ward. And how corruptive it is. I wish there was a prosecutor who could penetrate that. If it walks like a duck...

Somewhere down in central IL on I55, I keep seeing "Ethanol from Bean", I wonder if that is a better source for Ethanol then corn?
I also know of Ethanol being produced from biomass and left overs of corn, sugar canes, which in my opinion is a good idea. What else would we do with the leftovers, pile them up in trash or incinerate?

I mean I wish everyone had an electric car... but lets be real that will never happen for now... at least. And even then if it will Truck drivers will still need to rely on oil.

I personally hate the fact that 25% of oil that we use is still coming from middle east or Africa and 6% from Venezuela a dictatorship that hates us. I would love to see our country independent of all of that.

After 62 years of operation (22,614 days) the Things Remembered Corp. has decided to close its remaining 16 Key Shops at Sears. At one time we had over 2000 locations that made keys. In the Chicago area this applies to only the 6 corners store and the Lawrence / Damen store.

The last day of operation will be Wednesday, 7-30-14. Until then there will be a clearance sale at both stores starting on 7-23-14.

Ownership of the 6 corners shop will be transferred to the current manager of that shop (me.) However the other shop will be closed permanently.

Due to the usual legal stuff (leases, business licenses, etc.) there will be a gap between the closing the old store and opening the new one. I have been working on this since we were notified of the closings 7 weeks ago but this takes longer that you would expect.

I would like to thank the community for its support over the decades and I hope to see you back when we reopen.

See you soon,

  • Giovina Austin & Irving resident since '85

@EB Kitty if you read the post fully, you will notice that Dale will continue the key shop at the Sears Six Corners location under his own business name called the "Sears Key Shop" so it is not closing entirely. Well at the least the NW location! Thank God as that is the only place I have ever had keys made~

  • Today is the last day under Things Remembered, and also the last day of the huge sale. The shop will be closed at least until Sunday.

The two teacher unions are the "most" powerful unions in the country! Their money funds the elections and the politicians in turn support the union agenda at "every" level of government. It's an old and solid marriage into perpetuity, I guess. No wonder people do not want to vote. They feel helpless against the marriage.

It is amusing to see the match between the Progressive Caucus and the CTU agenda, which includes: $15 min wage rate/hr, moratorium on charter schools, protecting collective bargaining rights, public pensions, engaging the uneducated young people in public policies/voting, getting the elected school board, and demanding more taxation.

Both parties want to protect the status quo, because the prize of life-terms is great indeed. That is greed at its ultimate best.

Instead of raising the quality of education, they want more taxes and higher wages to take care of their pockets and to take care of the growing dependent uneducated population. Instead of growing employment, they tax out the corporations. Who will pay for this greed?

It is also amusing to watch African American Alderman fight for African American access to the selective enrollment schools instead of fighting the unions to get quality education across the city and to every neighborhood. Sure, let's keep the race card alive, just like the CTU does in the contract and on their website.

Let's face it: the charters, the selective enrollment schools, the magnet schools, all came into fruition, because no politician or civic leader chose to fight the union. Instead we do the union and lemon dance. How cordial?

AT&T DSL Modem

Does anyone have an AT &T DSL modem they want to sell or barter? I have already bought 2 at garage sales and they work but the plug in for power is messed up on both of them, I have to keep smashing the plug in to the point of feeling like I am going to break it, and then it comes loose after a short while and disconnects me. AT&T wants $75 for a new piece of crapola that will probably last a year and I really don't want to give them my money.

I can barter food, PM me to discuss.

I understand why this project is necessary and appreciate the scope of it, but it doesn't seem like Peoples Gas or the crews they are contracting for this are committed to following the "campsite rule." In addition to the requisite removal of hundreds of dollars worth of sod and recently paved walkways, as well as the trashing of the landscaping along the side of my house, they've strewn water bottles, cigarette butts and half-eaten pieces of pizza along my lawn and sidewalk.

Does anybody know whether Peoples Gas is going to take responsibility for at least repaving the sidewalk, removing excess piles of dirt/construction debris, and restoring the grass or are homeowners just expected to take this upon themselves?

I had an appointment yesterday for both meter move and a safety inspection. When I made the appointment with PG, the said we could "do both at the same time." The meter-mover guy showed up within the two-hour window, went in the basement with something that looked like a handheld meter, looked at the meter and the furnace, then went outside to make a mark where the meter would go. Took all of 15 minutes. I went upstairs to finish getting ready for work and when I went out the front door 30 minutes later there was a note, supposedly from the safety guy, saying he had come and I was not at home!! I was upstairs and my door chimes are very loud! He could not possibly have rung the the bell with my hearing them! So much for a two-fer!

He and his associate came out within the hour, which was great given the forthcoming thunderstorm we had Saturday night.

They were very reasonable, and easy to work with. They moved one of our downspouts, sealed off our catch basin intake, added a new downspout, removed the clog, pruned an overhanging tree, and cleaned out the gutters where necessary. I'd say they were there for about two hours - price was $140. I gave them $200 because I was so happy with the work, and they came within the hour. I'd recommend, and use again.

I guess it really doesn't matter since Resident20 inactivated their account days ago, but at least they were trying to solicit advice. There are people whose dogs bark incessantly and they are not even thinking about. Its hard not to get defensive when several people immediately attack you assuming that you were in the wrong. If Resident20 has had a number of dogs and this is the first problem they have had in 20 years, it stands to reason that they are not one of these oblivious dog owners that leave their dog barking the day away.

I have people who live a little farther down, one lady pointing and complaining about my dogs. It's interesting, because no one really gathers the facts. We have a dog downstairs who is let out and barks for hours. The two dogs next to us bark a lot as well as the other side's dog. But immediately, it is pointing fingers. Sometimes you just have to let people complain. I agree dogs shouldn't be let out though for a long time, especially when they are barkers. And, keep in mind the hours too. I mean, if it is late at night, it would bother me too.

Tree removal from backyard

We have a large tree in our backyard that we want to remove. We have talked with our neighbor (since the tree leans into his property) and he agrees it is time for the tree to go.
Can anyone recommend someone to take the tree out. It is about 2 stories tall and a full canopy (would love to remove it before the leaves fall for the autumn).

  • I've used Jim's Tree Service four times, twice to trim down the gigantic, fast growing trees the homeowner before me planted - once to remove half a tree that fell on my fence, and once to remove half a tree that fell on my neighbor's garage. (Yes, I have tree issues.) They do really decent work for a good price. I have two numbers - not sure which ones the best - 773-235-8004 or 847-384-9000.

  • We got our first estimate from County Tree Service, $950 for tree removal, and stump grinding (a few inches below grade).
Will get more estimates and update once we make a decision and how it went.

Fish tacos @Jeff Fest

Went to the fest tonight and was going to get some ribs but saw Gale St. is also slinging fish tacos and went that route instead and was not disappointed, they were really good and had some nice heat. I want to say it was 2 for $8 and 3 for $10. I'm not a beer drinker but they have a nice white wine sangria that was refreshing in the heat. It was a nice night, I went with friends from outside the neighborhood and they liked that the festival is more spread out, not crammed along a crowded street.

  • It was a fun fest. I like that you didn't have to pay extra once you were in for the little ones to go on the inflatables. I'd like maybe one or two more kids activities and/or have the inflatables not shut down so early. The drum circle was awesome:)

The drum circle is offered by John Yost...he has monthly drum circles at Mozart Park every 3rd Friday at 7:30pm...he also teaches djembe drumming, ie, West African Drumming....lot of fun and good times.

Another mom yelled out to please slow down (for obvious reasons as camp was just getting out and there were kids everywhere...in a park!). The officer yelled out his window at us!

I understand that there was obviously something going on. However, there are streets with no children. I don't even know who to report this to! It's not like I can call the police and say, "hey, you were speeding through the park and through 100 or so kids."

I am all for the big police presence, don't get me wrong. But not at the expense of my kids' safety.

  • We don't have motorcycle cops in Chicago. Bicycles can't catch a fleeing vehicle at a crime scene.

Stevio you are right that there aren't motorcycles in the parks. They do use 2 wheeled motorcycles in Chicago for motorcades and specialty details like funerals and some parades on the odd occasion. The CPD did have Harley Davidson sevi-car 3 wheeled motorcycles to patrol parks and were used downtown and in the districts for traffic patrol. They also used custom modified Hondas when HD no longer made the 3 wheelers. Regardless of their usage, these vehicles were never authorized to chase vehicles. The Dept then used Cushman vehicles, Honda 150 scooters, Polaris ATVs, now they just have bicycles because it's cost effective.

Construction Dumpster

Tonight around 10:15pm a large truck placed a construction debris dumpster on our street. I noticed because of the loud noise of the truck's motor and the crashing of the dumpster. I thought it was odd that it was placed so late on a Friday night. Then the same truck came to pick it up barely 20 minutes later. Anyone else see this truck/dumpster tonight? I was too tired and lazy to get info to call 311, but I'm curious about it.

Could be as simple as he dropped it at the wrong address, and went back to get it and take it to the correct address.

My car was stolen in front of my house

Beware if you reside in the Portage Park area. My car, a beige color, 1994 Cutlass Ciera was stolen right in front of my house. The last time I drove it was this past Monday.

Does anyone know anything about the Phoenix?

Hi,
I've seen that the old Stage Bar (before that Memories), at Montrose and Cicero, after disappearing for a few months and quietly reopening "under new management", is now open as the Phoenix. Does anyone know anything about it? I know there were some bands that used to come through the old place. I had high hopes that this might be a nice little live music joint in the neighborhood but I swear when I drove by the other night it looked like another tavern.

I was walking by so stopped in for a minute and talked to the manager, Jose. The place is spruced up quite a bit, and has a new jukebox and TVs. No draft beer at this point, just mainly domestic standards but he is looking to expand that. He says a few of the old regulars have stopped in but he would be happy to get some new regulars. I doubt that it's going to become the little live music joint a lot of us are looking for, but he seems open to ideas and some live entertainment, so feel free to stop in and make some suggestions.

Not a gay bar. We aren't so lucky. This bar may have been a drunk spot 10 years ago, but neighborhoods change. Wicker Park is nicer than it was 10 years ago and some are worse off. Maybe this will have a different type of crowd. I have "hipster" friends who love Sidekicks and none live in this area.
