now, I get it... they are trying to get you to buy more.... but it is not real pedestrian friendly.

I think if they want to do something like that it would be accumulative that the item would be on sale, but the more you buy the more you save.

to get the best price, I don't even consume that much pop. or if I figure out to carry it, I won't have the room to carry any groceries.

just wanted to ask, is there people out there buying 8 cases of pop to get the deal or is this marketing gone south on this one.

thoughts?

Shooting incident on Meade & Sunnyside August 13th

Why is there no story or information on the incident from last week, Wednesday, August 13th. Police were all over the area including Wright College looking for a young man who had a gun or fired a gun on Meade & Sunnyside, there was even a helicopter. I'm curious to know what happened.

  • I was just surprised, didnt think there was anything wrong with it. There was obviously a reason they had that much in on it.

  • i too was looking for story but never saw one. got call from dunham park where my son was in camp and they were on lockdown due to a "man wandering around with a gun." the park folks sent out email late that night that the person surrendered to police.

Doggy Day Care in Portage Park

We recently moved to Portage Park and are looking for a good place for those occasions when our work schedules mean too long a day alone for the dog. I've looked at two places - Central Bark on Pulaski, which looks great but has a one day/week minimum; and Barking Lot at Irving Park & Western, which has no minimum but some disturbing reviews on Yelp. Anyone have any experience to contradict those negative reviews? or another place you use for your doggy day care needs? Again, we don't need it every week, which limits things somewhat. Thanks in advance.

Try For your K9 in melrose park. Large facility and Nancy Reyes is great! They have all types of classes, training and I believe a swim pool. They also do doggy day care! We have taken our German shepherd there many times.

Quincey waits every morning at window looking out for Bob and when sees gets so excited! They will come to your home and walk dog, keep overnight at their place, you can drop off and pick up, you can pick your days, very flexible, real dog lovers....they are near foster and harlem.

Cat found by park

My husband found a lost cat tonight (8/19) on the east side of Portage Park by Long and Berteau. I believe it is female, approximately 2 years old. She is a tabby with white chin, paws and belly. The cat has some unique markings. If you think it's yours, please contact us on EB. There was no collar to identify her.

The Chicago Tribune’s ongoing investigation into the city of Chicago’s red-light camera program exposes the program for what it is: a regressive revenue-producing tool that dupes law-abiding citizens.

The fine work by Tribune reporters David Kidwell and Alex Richards proves the red-light camera program, much like Chicago’s parking-meter fiasco, was a bad deal from the beginning. Pitched as a safety measure, red-light cameras are really a way to nickel-and-dime average folks. From shortened yellow lights to manipulated tickets, residents are sick of these tricks, as they should be.

Government must not treat its citizens this way. The red-light camera program should be ended completely or, at the very least, scaled back drastically with heightened oversight and accountability.

Attempted garage break in

Has anyone had any issues this past weekend with kids trying to break into garages? My neighbor caught me on the way home today, and said around 10:30 pm last night, he caught some kids trying to jack open my garage. Thankfully, my alert neighbors have been great, but I don't know if they're trying anywhere else.

This was the 5300 block between Byron & Berenice.

  • @ beep, is that like a driveway alert alarm ? Can you post a link to the one you have?

  • Inactive User: Yes, I think that's what they call them. We bought ours at Harbor Freight (the one on Naragansett and Diversey) but I see they have them online for $17.99. I think we paid more in the store.
    http://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-driveway-alert-system-93068.html
I think these things are great, and can see using them in various places, like maybe in the attic facing the window, or basement facing the entry door, so you have some warning someone might be coming in.
Ours in the garage gives us a lot of peace of mind.

My front porch is cracking pretty bad and this past winter just killed it. I don't know if it can be repaired of if the whole porch has to come down. The bricks in front of my house are crumbling and turning black. Also the foundation in the front needs to be waterproofed with that black tar. It's not a huge job but it's too much for us to do ourselves.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! I live across the street from Merrimac Park.

Thanks!

Partial dormer recommendations

We need to completely tear-off and redo the roof on our house. I've been getting some estimates for it (I think we might go with Lindholm when we do it) but I'm trying to weigh out waiting til the spring (to save up some more $) because we also want to do a partial dormer to put in a bathroom upstairs within the next couple of years.

So I'm wondering if it's a total waste to redo the roof now, only to want to add the dormer for the future bathroom space in a year or two. I also have dreams of adding a bedroom above our kitchen (the kitchen was a first-floor addition years before we bought the house). Again, wondering how much of a waste it is to do the roof over the kitchen now, only to want to build up the bedroom in the next 5 years. That is the roof that is also our biggest concern - where the kitchen roof meets the exterior of the 2nd story.

So... any ideas on how much a ~12 ft length, 8ft high dormer might cost? I would just want the structural changes at this point (adding 6 ft up to the wall, and flattening out the roof in that section), not the bathroom yet. My dream master bedroom 2nd story would be 21x12ft above the kitchen. I wonder how much it would be to just get it roughed out in order to get the roof done, and then slowly do the finishes ourselves over time. We have family and friends in various trades (electric, plumbing, etc). But not structural changes.

Anyone have any recommendations on contractors I could get estimates from?

Tree Trimming?

The tree in front of our house has really had a growth phase this year. The limbs are so long now that they are not only almost touching the sidewalk, but the front of the neighbors house as well.

Is this something city services can handle? Will I get blown off by filing an internet request with 311? I would hate for winter to arrive and this may become a bigger issue.

  • The city placed a blue tag on a tree in front of our house. We are hoping it will be treated and not cut down! Anyone know what the blue tag indicates?

  • It is an ash tree infected with by the borer, but has been treated in hopes of it being saved.

Pueblo Nuevo Mexican Restaurant

My girl friend and I tried a new place last night....
Pueblo Nuevo
4342 N Central Ave.....
(just south of Montrose)
Food was good, service was good,
Place was clean....
We hate chain restaurants so we're always looking for new places....
We will definitely be back....

  • *Bump*

This place is beyond amazing! Love the way she always remembers me and my family when we come in. The food is always fantastic, I'm totally hooked on this place. The Pozole is Delicious and they make it daily. Their steak is season perfectly, best steak tacos in Chicago! Great people, Awesome Service and Food. :)

  • I tried it once and liked it, but they didn't have a menu for me to take home. I never stepped inside (had my dog with me on a walk), so I called in an order of tacos. I would love a menu so I can get some takeout from time to time. Without one I keep passing on this place.

Portage Jeff Gardens

What is blooming in your garden now? How are the new roses looking? What about the tomatoes, are you growing a new variety this year?

  • Have any of you grown tomatoes from seeds of an heirloom you bought at a Farmer's Market?

  • Well, it's that time of the year again...

Second crop, anyone? Is anyone planting, seeding for the winter crop? And if so, what are your choices?

Polonia, I have done tomatoes from seeds in the past but my sun room these days isn't that sunny or ventilated enough... So, not these days, no... I don't remember it being a difficult process.

Cubanopalooza?

I live near the intersection of Oak Park and Wrightwood Avenues. Festival Cubano is a 3-day annual event held at Riis Park. I'm all for ethnic diversity but find it beyond annoying that I have to listen to what sounds like a man yelling in pain to bongo drums hour after hour after hour via loudspeakers coming from an event a half mile away -- even having the Brickyard between us doesn't mute the sound. Am hoping it stops by 10pm. Any suggestion who to contact before the 2015 festival in hopes of getting them to tone it down? Probably should have asked the question last year when suffering through it then. Grrrrr.

  • Totally agree. We live 15 blocks to the east and it sounded like the fest was in our house. Can't imagine what people living closer had to endure this weekend.

  • I'm 2 block east of Armitage/Harlem and I heard them all day/night. Thankfully it was quite by 11pm.

Northeastern to strong arm residents

I opened the small newspaper for the area that gets thrown on my doorstep. On the front page is a story about how Northeastern is going to initiate eminent domain to seize homes of 6 residents that do not want to move. That way they can build dorms. I appreciate the expansion but it's wrong to allow someone to try and strong arm residents from a property they own. I wouldn't want someone to force me out of my home. So I am curious what people think.

  • Deutsch portage36

The city tried to force Michella Terrace on Irving Park to sell thru eminent domain a few years back. They wanted his land to make room for more car dealerships. He fought them and won. I'm glad he stuck it to them.

The owner not only beat the eminent domain attempt, but he bought the car dealership next door and converted it to his personal parking lot. God bless him. This is America, and people should not be forced to sell or move, if they choose not to.
