Trader Joe's and Aldi, are you watching?

Just another indicator. Community's reviews on Yelp seem to me to one more data point for the ability of a TJ to thrive in the area. I have been wondering why I might want to have a meal here versus Bayless, Graham or Steph's places as well.

Car Towed

It may seem like common sense but I parked in the new Bank of America lot and went to Chipotle. When I came out my car was gone. $219 later I had it back but not before having to drive to lakeview. Lesson learned but for the rest of you keep in mind they are scouting the lots.

I talked to Chipotle and they said you are allowed to park in the lot directly across from them. No other though.

  • Something similar happened to my husband when he parked in the walgreens lot on Cicero as belle plaine . They tow within 3 to 4 minutes and have someone watching the lot from the tow company I heard

  • your husband parked in the six corners Walgreens lot but didn't shop in the Walgreens? there's a bigass sign four of them
actually that say feel free to park there when patronizing walgreens but don't walk off the lot.

you'd have to be a moron to not understand how private parking works.

Please join your neighbors for a community discussion of a proposed redevelopment of 4901 W. Irving Park. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, at 6:30 pm, in the Las Tablas banquet space at 4920 W. Irving Park.

The owners of the site are offering a plan to renovate the existing 50,000-square-foot building to accommodate several new businesses, and the theater on the second floor would be renovated for community and non-profit use.

So far, owners have a signed lease for a Retro Fitness at the site. Additionally, owners have letters of intent from and are working on finalized leases with Starbucks and Aldi's. There are also discussions with a Culvers franchisee.

The renovated building will also have 14,000 square feet of additional retail space and 12,000 square feet of office space which is being marketed for medical and non-profit uses.

In order to preserve the theater for community and non-profit use, the owners are requesting $2.5 million in TIF assistance. Additionally, the owners need a zoning change from RS-3 to B1-1 for the parking lot behind the building.

This proposed project falls into the mission of the Six Corners Master Plan. The plan is driven by input from residents, businesses, and land owners, and was adopted by the Chicago Plan Commission in August 2013.

To learn more, ask questions, and join the discussion, please come to the community meeting. If you have any other questions, give my office a call at (773) 286-4545.

I lived in Ravenswood for 20 years, and watched it change into a vibrant community. Some of that success is owed to a strong base of current small businesses, like Timeless Toys. It was always a vital German commercial area, and There is still one of the best german delis in the heart of it. But, the first big anchor was the Old Town School. The neighborhood organized around it and now there are some franchises like Potbelly and Lincoln Square Athletic Club, and Starbucks. But, the evolution is mostly in small businesses. Some stay, some go, sometimes we were happy about the chain of events, sometimes not. Parking is a continuing headache, which could be mitigated at 6 C because of all the available land behind the old bank. I don't live near 6 C but I work in the shadow of this project and would leave a lot of money in that spot.
P.S. I would love to see an Aldi's, a ReStore, a yarn shop.

Organic Gardening

If you currently have an organic garden, or you would like to have an organic garden, I would like to offer my assistance. I can help you in creating an organic vegetable and/or herb garden or I can help you tend to a garden you already have. My name is Jose Bautista and my plan is to work in many gardens over the summer. No matter the type of urban farming you have/want: container plants, raised beds, or in-ground, I want to work in it all. If you might be interested please contact me and we can discuss this further. Have a good one.

spiro 1983- i could help you make a raised bed using concrete bricks. Everything included (compost and various minerals and fertilizers), all organic of course, and for a bed maybe 5 ft by 3 ft, i don't see how it could be more than $50-$75, assuming only 1 layer of brick and the bed being built on existing dirt. Plus, the holes in the bricks are perfect for herbs and flowers. I think its a great price considering the benefits. Of course whether something is "over priced" or not is an opinion that varies from person to person.

Ok Portage Park, Chuy or Rahm? You will you be voting for in April? Does Chicago elect its first Hispanic mayor, or does Rahm stay on track in his quest to be Hillary's running mate in 2016? Does Chicago elect one of it's own, or does Ravenswood Rahm get a second term? This is an important election, I hope we can get a better turnout. Think and decide people.

I mean, could we just do the one pipe and leave the rest or would we need to have them do it all? How should our city be organized, governmentally speaking?

Been thinking about this lately. What do people think of the idea of electing borough presidents like in NY? I am thinking maybe we would have 7 boroughs:

Northwest side
South side
Far South side
Southwest side

Not saying there wouldn't also be representatives in a city council but I think this type of setup could serve us better in terms of someone taking into account the big picture of each borough.

Southwest side

Not saying there wouldn't also be representatives in a city council but I think this type of setup could serve us better in terms of someone taking into account the big picture of each borough.

For example, I am thinking about the issue of the change in O'Hare flight paths and the impact it has had on the Northwest side wards. The aldermen in the affected wards represent smaller constituencies, a borough president who represented more people could have advocated more forcefully for the decisionmakers to consider that this change would make a large swath of the Northwest side housing stock less desirable and would affect housing values and quality of life. Just an example, I don't want this to be a discussion of that issue.

From Wikipedia:

"A borough president (informally BP, or beep in slang) is an elective office in each of the five boroughs of New York City. Borough Presidents currently have little real power within the New York City government. Instead they generally serve as ceremonial leaders who advocate for their boroughs on key issues.

Borough Presidents advise the Mayor, comment on all land-use items in their borough, advocate borough needs in the annual municipal budget process, appoint Community Boards, chair the Borough Boards, and serve as ex officio members of various boards and committees. They generally act as advocates of their boroughs at the mayoral agencies, the city council, the New York State government, public corporations and private businesses."

A good toilet

We are updating our bathroom and need suggestions of a good toilet to buy. Landloard won't do it but giving us a $200 budget to do it ourselves. So basically looking for one that works well and also not too expensive. I don't want to buy one that clogs all the time or needs to be flushed twice. Got one like that now!! Have any of you bought a new one that works well. Please let me know what it is. Thanks!

  • Stephanie, Mayfair Bike path rider, Northsider 44 years

I used Home Depot last summer when I did a DIY bathroom improvement. I have a Delta, high tank. Narrow profile. Way under your budget. Did a lot of research. The HD on McCormick has a couple of plumbers working the aisle. They were very helpful. The right HD is worth it's weight in gold.

Now What

45th Ward

Rahm Emanuel: 47.9%

Jesus "Chuy" Garcia: 35.1%

Willie Wilson: 3.1%

Bob Fioretti: 5%

William "Dock" Walls: 0.9%

Turnout: 41.8%

According to DNAinfo but that means the vocal ABR folks here were certainly better represented here than at the polls.

And who knew but cops and their families apparently vote as well. So we have a battle that may actually be boiling down to cops and their sphere of influence wanting some political and economic clout in the neighborhood.

Congratulations to 38th Ward Alderman-Elect Nick Sposato

I would like to congratulate Alderman Nick Sposato on his Election Day victory yesterday. I would also like to congratulate all of the candidates for refraining from personal attacks in their campaign literature and in their comments during the two aldermanic forums.

Our city and our community are facing some unprecedented financial challenges over the next four years that will call for some very tough choices.

It has been my honor and privilege to represent my neighbors over the past four years and I look forward to working with our new Alderman to make his transition as smooth, seamless and successful as possible.

Who should I endorse for mayor?

Am definitely NOT voting for our current mayor, am torn between Fioretti and Garcia. Interesting dynamic I noticed is that while the Progressive Caucus strongly backed CTU during the teacher's strike, CTU endorsed Garcia over Caucus member Fioretti. I am especially interested whether or not Alderman Sposato has made an endorsement. I have a huge front lawn waiting for a campaign sign.

The longer school day is a joke. Remember, it was the Board of Education that proposed shortening the school day during a previous contract negotiation. Instead of teachers getting a raise, The Board offered to shorten the school day by shortening lunch breaks. That is the only reason we had such a short day to begin with. Kids and teachers had 20 minutes to eat lunch. This 20 minutes included the time it took for kids to get from their class to the cafeteria. So it was probably more like a 15 minute break. Schools did not have any recess period either.

  • The longer day Emanuel PR campaign got lots of mileage. Most of our friends in the suburbs believed it. Thanks for clarifying.

Power Home Remodeling Sales Rep

Sales rep came to the door and decided to bang on the front window to get my attention when the door bell didn't work. I find most people coming to the door to sell something are very aggressive (including the window banging). They are generally rude when you say you're not interested. I suspect most of them are scams and/or not of quality. In this day and age, this is not the way to do business.

What's wrong with the above account which commented twice today in a Portage Park thread. The above account was open in 2012 and up to May 2014 events held in Ald. Sposato's 36th Ward were occasionally posted. When did Ald Sposato take over the 38th Ward? Guess Sposato doesn't need to earn the support of the 38th Ward voters he just moves in.
