Portage Park Dog Park

How come the garbage containers for our dogs waste are located outside the fenced in area? I feel that they should be located inside our area, and there should be more available.

  • Wow Portage Park has a dog park that's awesome! I wasn't aware of this either, and we live in Portage Park. So Stephanie, from Mayfair don't feel so bad, no question is a bad question.

So were exactly is this area at? Is it purposely hidden so no one can't find it? Do they have signs to identify the area?

  • Portage Park Ryan, I was hoping that you were right. But no, it is a serious post and also the dumbest post ever. And the people who can't even find the dog park are probably not bright enough to even own a dog or else they live in a cave somewhere.

CTA Bomb Screening on Blue Line Starting Next Month

What do you think about the CTA having the Chicago Police Department screen random passengers before they board the train? They said every tenth rider will be asked voluntarily for their bags to be tested with a swab, but not opened. If you refuse you will not be allowed onto the train. If you still try to board the train, you will be subject to arrest.

  • I'm sure it'll be totally random and not racially motivated at all :/

  • Am conflicted. One part on me says this is just the police expanding their general warrentless dragnet invasions. Another part says even this theatrically small change in routine might actually throw off an Evil Doer.

Cell phone reception (Addison/Austin) area

Hi -

Looking for feedback on cell phone carriers in the above area which has the best reception for voice/text messages.

Have been with Sprint for years, which is adequate. Looking into the family plans for the various carriers but would like to get opinions from folks about the reception.

Thanks!

If there are less trees on your block after this week....

The Streets & Sans and Forestry folks have been out removing trees on the parkway. These are trees that did not respond to the treatment for emerald ash bore. The trees that are being taken down are dead.
yes, it is sad that the trees were removed, but better to remove them now as opposed to a dead tree collapsing in the middle of winter and possibly injuring someone walking to a bus stop.

  • marsh3617 10 year resident of Six Corners area

OH, I see. The tree in question is not on the parkway, like ours was.

  • marsh3617...use the internet version of 311 to request a new parkway tree. You will join a very long line. It could be actual years as the City spends its forrestry money on saving/removing ash trees. But you might get lucky. By using the internet version you may be given the option of requesting a particular tree type from a list. On at least express preferences.

Gas Meter Replacement - Your Experience?

I had the initial appointment regarding moving the gas meter from the inside to the outside several weeks ago. There's some work being done across the street in the median between the street and the sidewalk. I asked one of the workers if that meant that we'd be getting the outside gas meters installed soon (no insights... apparently, it's a different crew that does that work). The person I spoke with at Peoples Gas didn't have any insights on timing....

So... for those of you have been through this process, how much of a warning do you get before needing to schedule the 4-hour window for moving the gas meter from the inside to the outside? I've read some posts where workers knocked on the door, wanting to do the work the same day. That would be difficult for us. Even a 24- or 48-hour warning could be difficult.

Sincerely, I acknowledge that this is a challenging project for Peoples Gas, but it's also challenging for homeowners.

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

You can tell them no when they knock on the door and and then get a phone# from them to call if you can't commit making an appt. right then. I'm not talking about the general phone#, the guy who knocked gave me his cell#.

  • My experience:

    Our's was done last year.

    It wasn't "challenging" whatsoever.

Bathtub Reglazing?

Portage Park/Bungalow... We're debating reglazing vs. replacing a bathtub (it's an old Kohler, probably from the mid-50s). I'd rather not just "junk" it if the reglazing could be "white" enough to match subway tile.

I wouldn't mind reglazing every few years if necessary; I just don't like the idea of scrapping a bathtub that is very functional/but just not "pretty".

City Budget Unveiled

As you have likely heard, the Mayor this week unveiled his proposed 2015 city budget. My staff and I will spend the next several weeks reviewing the 800-page, $8.9 billion budget with a critical eye, as I have in years past.

There are some positive items in this proposed budget: money for more pothole fillers, tree trimmers, and rodent control crews; more police trained to patrol on bicycle; and more support for homeless veterans and families. This budget also does not contain any property tax rate increase.

However, this budget also does nothing to address the looming $550 million pension payment that the state legislature has mandated must be paid to police and fire pension systems by 2016.

I welcome your input and ideas on how we craft a budget that reflects our values as a city. Take a look at the budget, and offer your ideas by emailing my office. ward45@cityofchicago.org

It would be AWESOME to have a place nearby like Stanley's at North and Elston, which has a decent selection of organic produce at inexpensive prices (in fact, I still go there once a week to get what I can before heading to Whole Foods).

This has been happening down our entire alley. We have a ton of recycling - we have two bins - and whoever goes through has been dumping whatever recycling doesn't fit into the empty bins or on the ground.

This is very frustrating for us, because we take recycling seriously. We normally keep the bins in our backyard until pickup day, but my husband got mixed up and thought today was pickup - sure enough, we came home to our recycling all over the alley and in our garbage bin. Same with all our neighbors. What can we do about this? A 311 call is all I can think to do, but somehow I doubt that will really do much.

  • Jefferson Park Enthusiast Liberté, égalité... communauté!

Another idea - you can request a second recycling bin (we have two). Put the metals in one, everything else in the other.

  • @pattymelt, do they still dig through the rest of the recyclables then? To see if there is more metal in there? Or do they just move along? I'm with LadyLord. I don't care if they take the metal, but I don't want the rest of my recyclables either in the...

@pattymelt, do they still dig through the rest of the recyclables then? To see if there is more metal in there? Or do they just move along? I'm with LadyLord. I don't care if they take the metal, but I don't want the rest of my recyclables either in the trash or thrown around the alley. If I wanted them in the trash, I'd just throw them in the trash and not waste the time to recycle.

I like the corn oil idea, but any type of grease or oil on paper makes it unrecyclable. (Which is why you can't put cardboard pizza boxes into the recycle bin--which I just learned a very short time ago.)

When I talked to the guy on Thursday, he said he'd remember to not put my recyclables in the trash. He described how he'd know my house. He also volunteered he always makes sure to close the lids so water doesn't get in the cans. (Which happened awhile back--someone must have talked with him about that.) I'll let everyone know how it goes. Maybe its as easy as talking with the guy?

Thoughts on CAPS meeting every two months

At the last CAPS meeting for beat 1624, someone asked the question as to why we meet every two months rather than one. The response from the officer was there wasn't enough crime in the beat (Cicero to Narragansett and Irving to Montrose) and to save paper. There was a lot of disagreement from the crowd (which was a good turn out compared to the last one). Thoughts?

For those think this type of stuff is cool, it looks like the one pictured in the link below, but with a darker cabinet, and not as pristine. It has a bunch of original paperwork, and looks like it was originally shipped to someone on the 5500 block of West Dakin.

You should know that these consoles get their great boomy tone by tracking hard on the record. This means the needle sits heavily on the LP and wears out the record quickly, so avoid putting anything other than thrift store finds on it.

That being said, I love my similar console. Best of luck!

Where to buy meat and produce

I am looking for a place in the Six Corners or Portage Park area to buy meat and produce that is good and reasonably priced. I've been shopping at Jewel but their meat is so expensive. I've seen a lot of little local stores so I'm looking for recommendations for any of them. Thank you!!

  • Dang! I forgot about Gene's! Love that store too!

  • Katherine Pastor, Irving Park United Methodist Church

Dennis, Family Fruit does have Amish raised chicken and eggs. I buy those things there, along with organic produce and the produce that doesn't really need to be organic. Shopping local is as much a priority for me as buying organic.

Also, at the Farmer's Markets, CD Family Farms has amazing pasture-raised meat. http://cdfamilyfarms.com/. We get beef, lamb, bison, and chicken from them and stock up for the winter.

Wal-Mart moving into 6 Corners

I would like to hear people’s views on possibility Wal-Mart occupying the Sears location at 6 corners. Do you agree with it or not agree with it?

  • BeenAFix Portage Park , Runner, Gamer, 30s, IT Guy

Walmart would never come in. That space would not fit their stores. I am hoping that Sears will survive because that location seems to do very, very well. Now that Petsmart has opened, it would be nice to see more stuff open. Binny's and Trader Joe's would be nice, but I think Trader Joe's ruled against opening in PP. A good furniture store would also be a possibility to make it a destination.

Energy Supplier Recomendations?

I started comparing my energy supplier charges on my Comed bill to that of friends, and as it turns out I am paying twice as much per kWh. I've researched a few suppliers like Spark, Integrys, and Direct Energy and all have rates to lock into for of 6,12, 24, and even 36 months. Do many of you have any advice on chosing the most affordable supplier? I average 1,000 kWh per month.

  • I found this site informative. I believe that the dollar amounts that they are stating are for your electricity supply only, but I haven't contacted them for clarification. It is, at least, a good list of options beyond the couple that you mostly hear of.

You can also buy cheap LED bulbs on Newegg or Amazon. There are plenty of online stores that can sell them but prices vary and some beat Ebay when sales occur.

To get back on topic, you will have to compare the various companies offered and place a note on calendars, your phones, and other places to find a new contract when your 6,12, 24, or 36 month contract expires. The reason rates double is that when you are off a contract the company expects you to leave at any moment and you do not get a "long-term discount" for being with them. It is similar if you would not have a contract with your internet provider, some of their monthly rates are twice the contract rate if not more.

Six Corners Bistro

My wife and I had dinner at the new six corners bistro last night. The food is fantastic, our waiter was very friendly, the music choice was perfect. Not very loud and not annoying. I had the burger, they tell me it was ground fresh in house and it tasted like it. It's Byob but we were told a full offering will be available in a few weeks. They are a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The food is great, prices are fair, and the tables have good spacing. I didn't feel crammed in. We will definitely go back. If you have time pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed.

  • BnW I think WAGS was briefly on the same footprint as what is now the Dollar Store. Before that it was an Illinois Bell switching office and before that, part of the Dickenson Tavern property. And before that, Indian Country.

  • There's two "dollar" stores in Six Corners. The one on Milwaukee where everything is indeed only one dollar, and the other one on Irving that says dollar in it's name but products can be way more than one dollar.

For $2.50 you can order however many reasonably priced donuts as you'd like and they'll deliver to your door. Their sister store Kim Long, next door, has great Chinese food and again for $2.50 they'll deliver you tasty Chinese food and donuts. The owners are so nice and obviously like what they do. One of the best things is that they have a good variety even near closing time, 10pm.
Never thought I'd go on about donuts like this but this is a real find!!! And so unique. I don't take advantage of delivery so that I can control my intake, but I did order some Chinese food and a donut recently. It was delicious.
Address is 5112 W. Fullerton. Phone 773.237.7588.

  • I love something sweet! The owner is amazing he told me he's been making donuts for years! I have also stopped in at portage grounds for their donuts ( they are excellant as well). I prefer perkolator coffee shop over portage grounds. It would be amazing if the owners of perkolator could team up with something sweet and offer their donuts at the coffee shop! Now that would be amazing! It's hard for me to get over by something sweet or I would be there everyday getting super fat!

Children's Eye Glasses

Just found our out 5 year old needs glasses. Would appreciate recommendations for children's eye glass business, ideally would like to support a Portage Park business. Although we're interested in a place that's good with children, even if not right in the area.
Thanks.

  • Not in the neighborhood but the Opthamologist on Western avenue near Fullerton was great for our toddler. Lawrence Kaufman.

  • JMC Six Corners/Old Irving Park resident.

I highly recommend Aardvark eyewear, kids-only specialists. It's on Western just south of Fullerton. Odd little shop, busy... tons of frame sizes and styles to try, and most importantly the service & expertise is high quality, personalized, caring. I bought my daughter's first-time glasses there; have been back a few times over the past year for growth and comfort fit adjustments, and haven't been charged even for long consultations. Go during the week if possible, on Saturdays it's jammed. Good luck!

  • Yes, Dr. Kaufman at 2456 N Western Ave. in Chicago 773- 235-2020 is the best children's ophthalmologist around. I have taken both my glasses wearing boys to him over the years and he comes highly recommended.

Orange Tabby Cat seen near Smyser Elementary

Saw a very friendly orange tabby cat with white feet near Smyser Elementary the night of Saturday, Oct. 18. It crossed over to Moody Street and was last seen near a blue house on Moody. I am pretty sure it was someone's pet as it was very friendly and looked healthy. I am concerned that it was lost and hope the owner can find it.

Tami, i'm so pleased to know you are a TNR - in this case R being rehabilitate and rehome. Good on ya!

  • Thanks Jan, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't have to spend their lives on the street.

Trick or Treaters

So since this is such a "family friendly" neighborhood, shall my wife and I expect trick-or-treaters in the next couple weeks? I think she's dead (no pun intended) set on getting dressed up and passing out candies. If that kind of thing does happen, should we expect kids early in the day, or evening?

  • Narragansett and Addison area - we usually get tons of smaller kids right after school. Then there seems to be a lull around supper time and then things heat up again with a huge surge of older kids and larger groups from about 7:30 until 9:00 pm. Then it usually stops. I'm dressing as a frog this year, to pass out candy!

  • It's a Friday night, so expect a LOT of kids throughout the late afternoon and evening.
If it was a school night, they would be out early, almost after school lets out until about 8:30

New Gas Line, now basement leaks

Peoples gas was through my block a couple weeks ago and installed the new line along the side of my house to install a new meter. Well, when we got that heavy rain a week or two ago, I noticed I got some water in my basement right near where the new line is. Not standing water or anything, but at least a foot or two of carpet near the wall was wet.

How do I file a claim? Do i start with the city, Do I need an estimate first, am I just SOL? I mean, I can't PROVE that is what caused it, but it's kind of a big coincidence

6 Corners Pet Smart OPEN!

Very excited that this store is finally opening today. It's right next to Jewel on Irving. For those with animals that need grooming, i think they are having a special on grooming at their grand opening on Saturday.
