Comcast Outage?

Hello all! I have Comcast internet service, and it has not worked for three days now. Comcast said that there is a known outage and my entire neighborhood has no internet service and a tech won't be out until Monday at the earliest. Is anyone else having this issue or is it just my building?

  • Portage Park Ryan Portage Park is where I call home.

We work from home a lot and our internet goes out pretty often. We've called to have techs come out, equipment replaced and nothing seems to work. The tech said the cables from the alley poles to the building maybe effected when planes fly over.

Explanation Please Mr. Cullerton

My wife signed up to do the Portage park art fair. We paid our $100 for a space. A spot on Long Ave. Tonight Mr. Cullerton decided he didn't want that. So 13 hours before set up time we are told no one can set up on Long ave. When we asked why the person on the phone said we don't know. The Alderman won't tell us why.

So Mr Cullerton, why?

Check Out OLV's After School Programs and Extended Day!

The OLV Difference!
OLV is committed to your child’s future. Not only does OLV have an outstanding curriculum but a wide variety of after school activities that help students prepare for their future. Through these activities our students excel in skills such as leadership, teamwork, compassion, academic, and social abilities to prepare them for their futures.
OLV also offers an Extended Day Program, for both before and after school care. Before care begins at 6:30 AM and after school care is from 3:05 to 6:00 PM.

No doubt it a wonderful program. It's the form of marketing that is bothersome (to me) that is primarily perpetrated by parents. It offers the idea that we should constantly be pushing our children towards an ideal.

I'm an advocate for lightening up and promoting the fun aspect of an after school program. And unless the program is necessary for working parents letting kids come home and chill with milk and cookies (we don't own a television or video games so this isn't an issue) let them have some free unplanned free time, do their homework, and help with dinner.

I wouldn't suggest we prepare a child for a future at any age, there isn't a need, they'll more towards it fast enough.

Let me say again. I am nit-picking the way the announcement focuses on future. Not the program, or the people running it. Kudo's to them.

  • Nit-picking is right. Loosen up.

I regularly walk my dog to Dunham park and in the late summer/early fall, have always noticed that there are sometimes people picking up the nuts that fall from some of the trees and collecting them in bags. These are usually older Polish women. I was curious as to what exactly they were collecting and collected a few myself. At first I thought they were chestnuts, and thought , oh cool! I was already looking forward to roasting them and eating them. When I walked to the park this morning with my daughter, I picked up a few more and told her of my intentions to roast and eat them, when she informs me that those were not chestnuts but rather, the fruit of the Ohio Buckeye tree. She had done a tree taxonomy project her freshman year in high school and had actually used those trees in the park to identify for her project. We went home and googled it and apparently they are buckeye nuts which are NOT EDIBLE. As a matter of fact, we did some more research into it and found out that chestnuts grow in clusters, in the same type of greenish-yellow looking pod, but it is far more spiky. The Buckeyes, however, grow one to a pod, and the pod is not as spiky and is more rounded. People often confused them with the chestnut, because they look so similar. I will throw away the nuts I collected but now I feel that the people that I have seen collecting them are getting them confused with chestnuts and I hate to think that people might be getting ill eating these.

Odette, you would not be able to eat it roasted. The horse-chestnuts conkers (also from the buckeye tree) are extremely bitter. I am surprised you haven't tried it as a child. :) I have. Curiosity kills a cat, not a human child :)...

Due to the bitterness, squirrels are able to eat up to half of the conker and then they leave it alone and bury the rest. No wonder neighbors were angry, Only Me. :) Out of the not-edible to humans fruits, white oak acorns are the only ones that squirrels eat with some consistency. Everything else has too much tannin and they take a bite and hide it.

There are very few species that can tolerate aesculin (the compound that makes the conker poisonous), deer is among them. And deer don't like them that much either, again the bitter tannins... Cattle has been known to be poisoned by them but I assume it's a poisoning from the green conkers or maybe leaves of the tree? Anyway, leaving it for the wildlife doesn't achieve that much, Gary. :) Most of it is likely cleaned by the human cleaning crew, eventually.

The horse-chestnut fruit, leaves and bark are widely used in pharmacology, in extracts to be taken internally for variety of illnesses, and for ointments. It's also widely used in the cosmetic business - in shampoos to protect the dark shades of coloring, to even out the skin tone... It's a powerful anti-inflammatory so it's added to astringent (burning) compounds. Btw., my grandmother used conkers to make an extract to relieve the pain of burns and frostbites. It was quite effective. In Polish culture conkers are also used in Christmas decorations. Thou I suspect the women were collecting the conkers for some ointment, perhaps for chronic venous insufficiency as it is known to temporarily relieve the pain associated with it.

My wife, son, and I stopped in this morning to grab some coffee and a snack to-go. The shop is quite nice, the 3-4 folks working behind the counter were extremely friendly, if not a *little* bit frazzled because they were somewhat busy at the time (which was great to see). Pastries are all from local places (Delightful Bakery, Fannie Schmoe's and one other that I forget at the moment). The coffee they said is roasted by a private roaster for them. The dark roast was great; my wife had the light roast and liked it and my wife said the white chocolate raspberry scone she got was one of the best scones she's ever had. I'm excited to have another independent coffee shop back in the neighborhood. I liked Regulus and was sad to see them go, but I'm really glad to see the Perkolator team making a go of it. I'll definitely be going back regularly.

  • Looking forward to stopping by after mass at St Pascal tomorrow!

She went on a rant about all kinds of stuff and pointed me to the website thetruthaboutjohnarena in my post. So I checked it out and just wondering if anyone else has. I took it to be people who don't like Arena making up a bunch of stuff but I also wouldn't know whether or any of it is true or not. I hope not! I did see in the FAQ's they say they stand by everything on the website so they're not worried about being sued. Regardless, my hope is that it's all nonsense but does anyone know if any of the stuff on there is true?

I saw this website prior to the first round of voting in 2011. Given that the phone call to the CPD was a mainstay, I surmised that it was put up by one of the political operatives for the regular democrats. They had slated a woman candidate after all. Four years later some robocalls regarding the same issue were placed right after they selected another woman candidate.

Historically the intramural fights between progressive and regular democrats have been nasty affairs.

Northeastern to strong arm residents

I opened the small newspaper for the area that gets thrown on my doorstep. On the front page is a story about how Northeastern is going to initiate eminent domain to seize homes of 6 residents that do not want to move. That way they can build dorms. I appreciate the expansion but it's wrong to allow someone to try and strong arm residents from a property they own. I wouldn't want someone to force me out of my home. So I am curious what people think.

Found Dog on 9/3/14

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on EveryBlock. I'm hoping to find the owner of a dog that was found on 9/3/14 by Belmont and Long in the Belmont Cragin area. It is a male German Shepard who is not neutered. If you or anyone else you know may have lost their German Shepard, please contact me. I hope to reunite him with his family! We have housed him for the past week and may not be able to keep him much longer. I'm not sure if we will turn him into Animal Care & Control, I honestly want to avoid doing that. Any leads will be helpful! Thanks in advance!

The dog in the above photo has been reunited with her owner.

My girlfriend and I could not keep her for more than Friday night into Saturday morning because we so-happened to be taking in a sick foster dog that morning. When we went to pick up our foster at the vet, we dropped the found dog off. The local rescue Bow Wow Revolution paid for the found dog to get a rabies vaccination and indefinite boarding until a foster situation could be figured out.

Luckily, the owner of the dog contacted me Saturday afternoon and he was able to be reunited with his little companion. A happy ending to the story.

I still worry about Pippa the German Shepherd and hope she finds her way back home. I of course am still keeping my eyes out for her when I walk my own dog. My hope is someone was able to find Pippa and just hasn't known where to look to find the owners.

I also keep checking with Animal Care to make sure she didn't get dropped off over there on stray-hold.

For example, there was this girl just brought in:

I know there is a model plane flying site over by Schiller Woods. I'm wondering if any of you have ever seen or know of a similar site for model rockets. I'd set it off in our back yard, but even closing our garage door loudly sets our neighbor's old dog into a panic. Plus, this model is reusable, and I don't want to have to go searching through alleys and spying in backyards to retrieve it.

Any info is much appreciated!

  • I fail to see the distinction between a model rocket and fireworks. Given the utter disregard by the CPD for the ridiculous amount of fireworks set off in this neighborhood, I'd be highly surprised they would come out for a model rocket. Also, isn't it the common consensus that the police only come if you are dead? I thought they had "bigger fish to fry?" Seems like you might be taking a bigger risk with the Parks Department patrol, over those whom we kind of know don't give a hoot.

  • I was going to suggest the forest preserves near Devon and Central Ave but the Forest Preserve Volunteer Center is there so there are Forest Preserve cars and maintenance crews near by that are often driving through the area.

    "real rear wheel"

some can't even say it once

  • I worked closely with Dan for several years back in the day - my first web job in Chicago. Went on his press check for the poetry book he kept trying to hock during that speech. I love him, though he seems to be suppressing his 'crazy poet' nowadays. Also, I've never felt so strongly that I know someone who will one day be mayor.

Possible meter move scam?

So our street has been tore up, everyone has the new pipes and infrastructure for our gas meters to be moved out of our homes. I've been wondering how Peoples Gas will schedule this with homeowners, if you have had your meter moved already did they mail you instructions to call and make an appointment?

So our street has been tore up, everyone has the new pipes and infrastructure for our gas meters to be moved out of our homes. I've been wondering how Peoples Gas will schedule this with homeowners, if you have had your meter moved already did they mail you instructions to call and make an appointment?

I ask because yesterday morning two individuals in construction gear rang my bell and asked if I wanted my meter to be moved that day. When I said would need at least 24 hrs notice to move some things and that my husband wants to be present they got a little pushy, suggesting they help me move the items, repeating everything I said to each other...I kept saying tomorrow (today now) would work they wouldn't commit saying they would need to speak with the foreperson on the job site, would I be home all day? They would stop back by to confirm Wednesday...needless to say they didn't stop back by. I don't know. Maybe they were legit? But I just didn't get a great feeling from them. In the past reps from Peoples Gas always had badges, especially if they were going to be entering our home...and I just can't see them scheduling these final moves by going door to door....

If you've had your meter moved outdoors how did they go about scheduling?

If I see these two again I will snap a picture...it was an older (45-55) black man with a younger (28-35) white woman...

More shootings close to home

While not quite Portage Park, its still pretty close to home. this is the stuff spilling over into our neighborhood that i speak out against all the time. (what I referred to in the post about the increase in Gang activity in the area, specifically Hispanic gangs). Its becoming a serious problem around here with the shootings. The one last week at Laramie, now this.

@CiscoC, that's why I think they need our funding. Regardless of the controversy surrounding the former CeaseFire director, the program works. Here, see the results of a study that found the program's approach "promising:"
    https://www.crimesolutions.gov/ProgramDetails.aspx?ID=205
Also, if you have the time and inclination, watch the documentary "The Interrupters," which showcases the invaluable work this organization does. And try to keep an open mind - as productive and effective as complaining about gangs and parenting on EB is, it's possible it's even more effective to interrupt violence where it happens.

  • Trust me. As a social worker I know what you mean about being more productive. But I also know about the lack of availability of mental health assistance as well as recreational activities for low income families. Great resource on the interrupters. I am familiar with it. I also like the fact that you are providing links and insight. Most people on EB don't take the time to be a good neighbor and share actual knowledge.. Thanks ladylord

A Dangerous Celebration

I have a video I shot at Diversey and Laramie is from a previous year of one of these celebrations showing the type of reckless driving behavior that goes on here on Diversey, on Fullerton and eventually spills into the side streets and alleys. 1 to 3 times a year. This is supposedly to celebrate some annual Holiday. It started around 8pm last night (9-15-14) and went past midnight. Why is this kind of thing allowed? Where are the police?...

Where are the police? Last February I received a “Speed Camera” warning ticket for going 2 mph over the limit and a neighbor got a seat belt ticket over the summer. If I can figure out how to post this video you’ll see, at these “celebrations” there are very few seat belts worn, there’s open beer in the cars, reckless high speed driving, people hanging out of cars WHILE there are children present both walking and on bicycles, public intoxication, curfew violations (this video was shot around 11pm that year), etc. I wish I would have recorded the car surfers that came after my phone ran out of memory. Yes! Car Surfers! It’s really amazing no one is killed at these “Celebrations”! If anyone has video or pictures from last night on Fullerton or Diversey, please post. I realize this isn’t the Portage Park area, but it’s not very far.

Thanks for all the comments. I didn't realize this also went on in so many other areas of the city each year. The noise and chaos or exhilaration and fun (as Tom G termed it) did start up again last night but didn't last long. It seemed this time the police were on it. A neighbor brought this situation up at a CAPS meeting a few years ago and was told to talk to the alderman. In ward 31 that goes no where. As some folks noted there's nothing wrong with ethnic celebrations or even celebrations of a sporting event for that fact. But common sense must be exercised when out of control speeding vehicles are used as a tool of celebration especially when they are in the presence of children.

As most of us know, common sense is not all that common.

What is someone's recourse when your neighbors have violent dogs?

For the last five years my neighbor's dogs have gotten loose and attacked several people. Most the time they just scare the heck out of people, but there have been injuries. I remember the person across the alley getting bit on the wrist, and yesterday another neighbor and her grandson were attacked. For the last five years my neighbor's dogs have gotten loose and attacked several people. Most the time they just scare the heck out of people, but there have been injuries. I remember the person across the alley getting bit on the wrist, and yesterday another neighbor and her grandson were attacked. About two years ago the dogs were taken after attacking a streets and san worker in the alley. Six months later they returned. This is starting to get frustrating and I'd hate to see this problem solved after a child gets seriously injured or mauled. How can the homeowner or renter be pressured into taking action and hopefully accepting the fact that they are not responsible dog owners? By the way, this is the 4200 block of north Moody.

I can see both sides of this issue. I've been around many pitbulls in my life who have been super friendly. I've also known personally of a couple really bad experiences with them. One was a cousin who had one that I loved. They got it as a puppy around the same time they had their first child. When they were both around 5 the dog attacked him for no reason. He just came down the stairs and the dog flipped out. Luckily my cousins husband was right there and prevented a serious injury or worse. He unfortunately had some extensive damage to his arm. They turned the dog over to a shelter after that. Not sure what happened from there.

The other instance what about 10 years ago. I was walking with my friend who was walking her pit. It was a great dog and never had any issues. Well we were standing talking to another friend and a small dog came running up to it (off the leash) and Max (the pit) just grabbed the thing by the neck. We were all freaking out, as was the lady who's dog it was. We did everything we could to get Max to let go but he didn't until the dog was dead. That was one of the most traumatic experiences I've had. That's also why I hate seeing people walk their dogs off the leash. Anyways, they ended up keeping the dog and never had another problem with it but that with my cousin's experience and others I've heard about make me very leery of them. I know probably 95% of the time it comes down to the owner or the dog's history, but there's still always that chance. There is with any dog but the difference with pits is they don't just bite and let go. It seems the bite and hold things is in their DNA.

Blame the deed not the breed. I have worked with the Doberman Pinscher Club of America regarding dog bans. There is a lot of emotion/drama around this subject. Everyone has a story that ranges from death to maiming to the best family dog in the whole world. Certain breeds are predispositioned towards certain behavior. Training can manage instinct but it can't erase it. Dog owners should know what their dog is bred to do, practice responsible dog ownership, and be fined or jailed if their dog bites someone or causes property damage. And everyone should research the facts.

According to AKC statistics the Pit Bull, Chow Chow, Rottweiler, Akita, and Bullmastiff are the top biters. However,dog-attack statistics are notoriously unclear on elucidating why people are maimed or killed by dogs (cruel breeders, bite victims that don’t seek medical attention).

If you are concerned about a dog that has behaved violently stay away and call the appropriate authorities to report the dog, if you are afraid of a dog because it is big, loud, and barks at the window or on fenced priority perhaps learning more about the dog will help, talking with your neighbors, and reassuring yourself that the dog is safely contained on their property.

Teach your children to keep fingers out of fences, never to approach a strange dog without permission, and to stop and turn away from a dog that looks threatening. NEVER RUN. Drop and tuck if attacked. It is as important to teach dog safety as gun safety. SAFETY NOT FEAR.

Frankly, I'm on the dogs side in most cases, and these tips will help to keep bans and responsible owners grief to a minimum. In most cases when people (especially children) are bitten they are doing something to the dog that they shouldn't. Kids love to tease dogs that react strongly--especially boys ages 6-14. But I wouldn't ban them, since I have one :-D.
