Garcia was viewed as being an obstructionist in opposing the expansion of UIC as well as all the local jobs and contracts that came with it. Garcia rejected all that to prevent "gentrification". It was a bad decision and the voters didn't agree with him. Garcia got dumped and fell out of politics for a full ten years. Eventually he got on the county board working for Toni Preckwinkle. But for what it's worth, Preckwinkle, who knows Garcia better than anyone else at this point, has refused to endorse him. What does she know about him that she's not saying? Preckwinkle is being very coy about withholding her endorsement.

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

@Avast: "He got voted out after a single term in the state senate. Guess the constituents weren't too impressed."

That is incorrect, he was elected to two terms, in 1992 and in 1996:

He lost in 1998 to a guy with a lesser 'stache:

Good Job Campaign Workers

Our door has been knocked on by a number of campaign workers; a REAL person (opposed to a robo call) sharing their knowledge and excitement about the candidate they want me to support. The campaign workers have been mostly been positive and provided me with a new piece of information about their candidate. (I fully admit to being a political dunce). As a result, I haven't regretted opening the door and spending a few minutes talking with them. Thanks for walking the blocks and sharing your excitement and knowledge about the candidates.

Assault/Mugging

Just found out this morning my daughter's boyfriend was attacked Monday evening around 11pm near Portage Park school. As he was walking home someone came up behind him and punched him in his head. Rather sad that someone can't even walk through the neighbor hood without being in danger.
And, before anyone asks - no, it was not reported to the police. I would pressure him to do so, however numerous past experiences dealing with the police have been more frustrating rather than reassuring. Since my family moved in to Portage Park six years ago we've had the cars broken into 3 times, my father punched in his face from someone with road-rage, someone get out of their car to threaten me, my son both approached by a sexual predator (when he was underage) and held up at gun point and robbed and now my daughter's boyfriend being attacked. I don't see the area getting any better - rather seems that things are getting worse.
Be careful and aware of your surroundings while walking around - and try to walk with someone instead of alone. These scumbags are all over.

  • Randy Stroller

No need to badger this person. My reading of this is we are not even in contact except third hand with the person who would need to try and file a report and that it is not easy to file a report and many are ignored in any way possible to make the stats look good.

  • Just my opinion, no pressure intended, it's this person's call of course.

About the show:
Inspired by last year's relentless Chicago winter (and let's face it, the one currently drawing to a close hasn't been so great either), Duplicity Ensemble combines two of Shakespeare's greatest plays to create the ultimate antidote for cabin fever at Filament Theatre. When four young lovers chance upon into a quiet mountain cabin while looking for shelter from a snowstorm, life is turned upside-down as hearts get broken, muffins get eaten and a play is read in this modern comic mash-up of The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Once everything has been spun backwards, can it be set right again?

Hi everyone. Thank you for last year's patronage of the farmers' market but we won't be continuing. An explanation is provided below.
1st and most importantly, Ald. Cullerton/Ald. Reyboras/our local chamber didn't support it and then I, as an independent business and the acting market manager, was cited and fined for putting the Sunday signs up to advertise the market days. It was a heavy fine plus court costs and attorney fees. The Friends of Portage Park and the Portage Park farmers' market manager, in particular, were opposed to a new market so close to Portage Park. They covered and often removed our market signs. Their signs were never cited or removed. We were in complete support of their market and hoped that our market only benefit the community overall. This in conjunction with a lack of Aldermanic/Chamber support, was truly the demise of the market.
Last summer 30 commercial property owners attended a closed meeting, (business owners only), to address crime and loss of business in the area. That meeting included Ald. Suarez, Commander Navarro from the 25th police district, its CAPS leader, (Commander Bay16th police district and Ald. Cullerton were no shows & didn't send representatives). The overall goal of the market was to help improve the area and counter the crime and loss of businesses, obviously certain powers mentioned didn't concur. Ald. Reyboras/Cullerton appear to want pawn shops and liquor stores as a solution. As commercial businesses not living in the ward, we can't vote so we don't count. Suarez & Reyboras reiterated this fact at this meeting with Ald. Reyoras stating that"there is no crime in his ward". It would have been step forward if the market continued but until we get a new Alderman with a better vision it isn't possible. Thanks again but for now no more market.

  • Kelly, I'd like to talk with you about your original post on your farmers market. As mentioned above, we tried to make a go of a farmers market on North Ave. Please email Judith to schedule a mutually-convenient time to talk: opfolk@comcast.net. Thanks!

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you?

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you from the 48 unit apartment building at the end of you block. How will you feel laying out to get some sun, or your kids playing in the splash pool? Never going to happen on your block, maybe not, but would you wish that on anybody? John Arena loves density, and if there is an empty lot or tired old commercial building, a closed church nearby, you are extremely vulnerable. Our old alderman's "spot zoning" was bad enough, but Arena is bad up-zoning on steroids. Before you vote, ask yourself, COULD YOU BE NEXT?

  • Lots of people can look at them Bob. They are someone's wife and kids. What's the difference? Don't forget the mule when you buy your forty acres. Maybe Indiana would be a good place for you. In Indiana, they don't like people who "are not like us". Bet that would suit you.

  • Bob is dog-whistling. Racial and ethnic animus sounds are growing louder.

We want more parking they say, because parking costs raise housing costs.
We want single family at L&A they say, because high costs keep "them" out.
We want a library Bob says, because we don't want studio apartments on...

Hope there not going to use the alley as a commercial entrance or allow cars through the alley preventing the Police, Fire Department and Ambulance from any life threatening situation or even prevent some other city services or the utility companies from passage through a grid lock neighborhood.

Let's call our Alderman Ariel Reboyras and complained, so please call him starting MONDAY at 773-794-3095 before the zoning change or he gets his license!!

More people go to silent movies than I ever realized until I started attending these events. That goes for some of the classic movie events too. A few weeks back we attended the "Casablanca" screening at the Pickwick with a near capacity crowd. Last year there was a Charlie Chaplin silent movie at the Patio with live orchestra that all but packed the Patio. Granted these events are one time only screenings which will most likely not be enough to support a vintage single screen venue like the Patio. But events like this combined with 1st and 2nd run movies and live events should work.

36th Ward run off candidate forum

36th WARD, Monday 3/23, Candidate forum for Alderman in Chicago's 36th Ward. The debate was organized by the Bel-Montclare Community Organization. The candidates are Gilbert Villegas and Omar Aquino. The moderator is Alonso Zaragoza.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3GWy9uz-zI

  • Alonso Born and raised in the Cragin neighborhood.

In some cases like the 36th (and 29th also), I would just put the money issue aside and base my decision on ideas and answers they've given. In both Wards, both run-off candidates have accepted money and support from politicians and special interest groups so it's not like one is donation is worse than the other. Sometimes it comes down to a simple gut feeling and not actual data.

  • MontBen Nordica est. 2009

I agree if you're talking about challengers. With incumbents, there is a record to examine for evidence of back scratching. The voters of the 36th definitely have a big job ahead of them and the hardest part starts the day after the council is seated.

St. Pascal School's summer program is very popular. I hope that if you are looking for a camp or program for your children this summer, you consider this one.

  • Misplaced Texan Fourth Year In PP

Our daughter has attended for the last three years and loves it. They have lots of fun, but manage to squeeze in some learning as well. Lots of field trips too. We highly recommend.

As a bonus they offer onsite before and after school care (for extra, but reasonable charge).

I agree with wicked fast BMW not every mechanic can work on every car. I own a German car, and not every mechanic can work on them. I made the mistake of taking my German car to one of the small shops in the neighborhood for them to change my radiator hose. Well, I guess they didn't flush the radiator leaving a bubble which messed up my engine pretty bad. They also wouldn't stand behid their "warranty". I had to take the car to the dealer and pay 4000 dollars for the repair. The dealer even stated it was the shops fault, and if they had replaced the hose they would have paid for all the damage to the engine.

So moral of the story go to the dealer or a large company. Not just some small shop that will look the other way when they mess up. Oh and BTW the mechanic that did this to my car is listed above.

Peoples Gas Neighborhood Upgrades Installation: Landscaping Disaster

Anyone else upset about the way these upgrades were handled? Essentially, they dug up the land, did something underneath it, installed a pipe for a new meter (I assume) and dumped sand in to replace the soil. They also actually ripped up the sidewalk to do this work and then filled it in with Gravel. In addition, they spray painted the sidewalk with a permanent paint.

  • Helen R Portage Park resident since 1983

The new gas lines were done on my block several years ago. They did an excellent job of putting it back together. I would think the timing of this project (winter) is the problem.

We participated in the city's sidewalk share replacement program 1.5 years ago, and 6/8 squares we paid for were damaged (removed, corner cracks, overcuts and heaving out of level). But only 3 were painted for replacement, which is an issue. Peoples Gas should be embarrassed about how poorly this project and its impact has been communicated to customers. I've gotten no information from the PG CS # and no calls returned by supervisors they forward me to. Alderman is frustrated as well but offered no contact information for the contractor for our block. A fellow neighbor finally tracked down the foreman on the project the day the concrete work was to begin. PG and Alderman should be much more forthcoming with the contact information. Communication goes a long way to manage expectations.

The original "stolen dog" story is full of holes. If this vet dumped Neven there is very little legal action that can be taken but her practice and reputation could be severely damaged. It's horrible when anyone treats an animal in this matter (or any living creature) but it goes way beyond horrible when it is a veterinarian. The licensing board for Vets takes all complaints seriously and may be a good place to start. Caution and facts needs to take precedence over emotion but I do think this needs to be investigated and if I am not mistaken she had another incident that was suspect with a dog she owned (please note, I did not fact check this information)
Sarah I am so sorry this happened to you. Thank you for being willing to adopt, foster and allow yourself to be subject to this kind of heartbreak despite all your best and careful efforts.

  • Paula, Belmont Terrace 9-year resident

Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss. It's hard to imagine that there are people who are so careless and irresponsible as Ms. Davis. You did your very best to help Neven prepare for a forever home. Remember that he had a wonderful life during the months he was cared for by you- he was very lucky in that way. Thank you for fostering rescued animals. I hope you're able to continue doing this important work.

"Protecting the Character of Established Residential Neighborhoods."

That is one of the first three reasons given under the City of Chicago's Zoning Ordinance book, it's listed on one of the first pages, under "Purpose and Intent" (Section 17-1-500). SO HOW DOES ADDING A FIVE FLOOR 48 UNIT RENTAL APARTMENT BUILDING MAINTAIN THE CHARACTER OF A NEIGHBORHOOD DOMINATED BY SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES AND 2-FLATS? www.jeffersonparkfreepress.com

  • Nope....must be a missing link. And like Johnny says " what does it really matter".

  • Yes, Ryan, there's a lot that has to be considered in urban planning as you know through your knowledge and experience with this weighty issue. Anything less and we'd simply wind up with those huge mega residences like that 1909 Burnham plan. Well, they indeed got their shopping mega malls,...

Anything less and we'd simply wind up with those huge mega residences like that 1909 Burnham plan. Well, they indeed got their shopping mega malls, didn't they! But in your last post you put your finger on the one component that seems to be behind all the emotion and ill will (not from you I should add) surrounding the local planning, and that is guiding of housing development based on "market conditions".

When we reached out to the manager a few months back, he assured us that FFM did not have plans to close. We reached out to him yesterday and he informed us that FFM has been receiving offers for their property that includes the building and parking lot as well as the parking lot across the street for the past few years. They have recently been reviewing more serious offers. While there is not a closing date nor plans to close down without a sale of the property, should the property sell, they will move forward immediately with the transfer to the new owners.

Thank you for your continued support of our independent businesses at Six Corners! "

Dear Neighbors,
I need any advice or suggestions for an emergency plumbing drama in my building. You all have helped me out before and I am hoping you all can help me out again. Over a week ago, my basement started to flood. And it has not stopped since. I have had several plumbers come out. Two separate plumbers have rodded the line numerous times from the catch basin, plumbing stack, and inside drain closest to street side (don't know what that drain is called). The last plumber I worked with, that came out this last Friday, who works with the City Private Drain Program, told me the problem is definitely street side. The line is so congested they could not even camera the line. Water is not flowing out. Sewer water is, in fact, flowing in. Flooding is a daily threat and my family has to manually pump out the water daily. The plumber believes it may be a gas line that damaged the water line since they changed the meters from inside to outside in the fall. Peoples Gas says the City should come out first with Private Drain program. I have called Peoples Gas repeatly to at least review the work with no response. But City needs plumber to rod line and "prove" City damage. This poses a serious and dangerous issue if the rod and crack the gas line. I am working with the plumber to pull a permit and get an appointment with the City, though nothing has happened as of yet. Even if is it not a Peoples Gas issue, the City could take weeks to fix this. I have called Alderman Cullerton's office and didn't get any more answers. I am in need of immediate relief of this issue. Any thought or ideas of what to do to expedite the issue? Also, I am by Central and Cullom, anyone else having this issue?? Thanks!

  • Paula, tree root invasion might be a complicated answer. First step might be to ask your house insurance agent. Making it clear you are not expecting to file a claim, but asking if agent knows the normal practice on this kind of thing. At a minimum your agent can tell you what happens if your neighbor's tree falls on your property....and your (limited??) rights to trim the tree at your property line.

  • Christine, any update?

Six Corners Renaissance Gets Big Boost as Boarded-Up Stores Get Snapped Up

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150324/portage-park/six-corners-renaissance-gets-big-boost-as-boarded-up-stores-get-snapped-up

The fact that Condor bought the properties — which were in foreclosure at one point — without first asking the city for financial assistance or a zoning change is an indication that the rebirth of Six Corners has firmly taken root, said Owen Brugh, chief of staff for Ald. John Arena (45th).

"Businesses beget businesses," Brugh said. "This tells you where Six Corners is going, and evidence that the district is moving in the right direction."

If it sells, I would love to see a little market that rents stalls to independent vendors--the butcher, the fishmonger, the poultryman, the greengrocer, etc. I lived in Spain for a bit in the late 80s and that is how they traditionally did their shopping, the full-service grocery store was only just starting to become a thing.

So far 10 trees have been removed. As we speak another is being cut. This started at 8:30 am. There was no posting on the tree or anywhere near it. I have called the City and have been told its cause of the ash bettle. None of the trees on my block have been or looked sick. They bloom every year, from top to bottom. My neighboor had hers removed because she hated it. And had a process to go through to do so. Shortly after that is when they started chopping them down left and right. When you looked at the cut down trees they were healthy, there was no sign of any infestation. When I asked the city why, I was told ALL OF THE ASH TREES ARE INFESTED, AND THEY WILL BE REMOVING THEM ALL. Also no new trees will be placed back unless the owner wants to have them come and do it. I think there is also a fee for that. My neighboor on the other side of the lady who had hers removed, he is refusing to have his cut down. So there has been talk between the neighboor on the other side n the one who had the tree removed. I think its disgusting. Our neighboorhood looks like garbage now. All the fresh air that we get from this polluted city is getting harder to get.

Mason ave trees

Ok so today my friend that lives down the street stopped by. He told me he saw the city trimming branches on his tree and thought that's all they were doing. Well the cut the whole tree down and told him that it was dead. He had told them it wasn't and didn't want it cut down. Phillip I had told him about your idea for Mason ave. I was wondering how we go about this. He and his wife want to join in getting trees back on Mason ave. The tree provided shade and they are upset. So if anyone can help us out please get ahold of me. Thank you all ;-)
