Again with the television/internet service

OK folks, a Comcast rep was at my house yesterday and offered me a very attractive package with a two-year fixed price of $130/month. We get a faster internet service, premium stations, DVRs on two televisions, basic boxes on 3 with a total of 5 TVs hooked up for service.

Currently we're at $75/mo for Dish and about $40/mo for verrry slooow internet with AT&T. Both services seem intent on raising rates at least once a year.

My mom lives with us and we're paying about $27/mo for her very basic Xfinity service.
So we'd be saving a little cash but getting some upgrades. But I have the feeling I'm entering into a contract with Satan because of some of the Comcast stuff I've heard. I've also visited the office on Milwaukee and it was not a place of happiness and good Karma.

some input here...? We've pretty much talked out the dog poop issue...

  • That's all well and good but make sure you renegotiate prior to the term expiration... Otherwise, you will see a $300 + bill

Home Insulation

Has anyone recently had their home insulated by a reputable company? Were you completely satisfied? Would you recommend them? Did they use foam, cellulose or fiberglass? Was it blown in?

I am in need of a reputable, trustworthy and knowledgeable company to add insulation to my home. Any referrals and recommendations are much appreciated.

We used chicagoland spray foam. Had several quotes for both spray foam and traditional. Spray foam is a lot more expensive but fit our needs. In order to go with traditional we would not be able to use our attic for storage, plus our furnace is in our attic so it would always be warmer. The gentleman (Jeff, Steve and Dan) at Chicagoland spray foam were very professional and explained everything very well. We have already seen a significant drop in our gas and electric bills.

The only issue we had was that we played phone tag a lot, but that also may have been because we were in contact with them around Christmas and New Years. They are a small company so the guys that install the insulation are also the owners

Can anyone recommend a reliable, honest, neat (i.e. cleans up after themself) and reasonable carpenter and plumber? I need a carpenter to cut a hole for an attic access and a plumber to repair a dripping shower.

I feel the sudden need to defend Rustic Fence in Niles.

They ARE reliable in my experience (they did our fence on both sides - we split the job into 2 year project). Did it exactly to specifications (custom), and while they were a $100 more than another company we asked for a quote (and matched others), they were also much nicer in dealing with and helped me maneuver the permit process so it was not painful (it can be) and, finally, made 2 separate the quotes for us and the neighbor (so we didn't have to work out the split of cost between us and mess up our relationship in the process).

They also did the work in reasonable time. Many companies I called at the time said 2 months... They had done it in 4 weeks AND cleaned up really well after themselves.

If you are removing old soil under your fence - remember to include it in the quote (they need additional truck to come in and pick it up). The salesman will point it out.

My experience with Rustic wasn't as positive.
Installers were messy, crude and didn't follow specs as they should have.
Some materials were lesser quality than what was displayed at their sales site.
    They were fast,tho.
In such a rush they managed to dump gasoline on my lawn, leave piles of dirt...

In such a rush they managed to dump gasoline on my lawn, leave piles of dirt behind, install crooked post, and do a half a** job on the gate hardware.
Discovered later that they didn't .cement a couple of the post properly
I believe the company had changed hands from when I had previously done business with them..I won't use or recommend them again.

Need new cement steps

Need recommendations for new cement steps. Thank you

  • We just had our front steps replaced and I found Saul Lopez on Angies List. Out of all the estimates his came in the lowest and I can see why he has an A rating on AL...I am very pleased with the results. His number is 773 648 1823 and 773 777 2459. Nice guy to do business with.

Norwood Park East street repair/repaving?

I've seen a significant number of sidewalk repairs around Norwood Park East this week, which makes me wonder: are street repairs coming any time soon? These pics are just a sample taken from a Google tour of our neighborhood.

http://s7.postimg.org/9t2xun36z/NPE_0004_Layer_2.jpg

The houses, sidewalks and parks are so well kept ... how could the
city let streets in one of its few middle-class tax bases get this bad? The bombed-out look is as embarrassing as it is destructive to tires and suspensions.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has info on upcoming repairs!

  • Sooooo apparently the election itself is more fun to discuss than tangible results from whoever wins?

Job Hunting

Would like to know my neighbors' experiences on job search websites that they found successful. I don't know how successful monsters, career builders and indeed are in job searches. Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you so much.

  • robin in WRP Feelin' Feisty

Indeed.com or simplyhired.com will comb through the job boards for you. You will probably have better luck with networking events. This is probably the best source for job-search advice http://www.humanworkplace.com/

  • Chuck Johnson Assistant Director, New Hope Community Food Pantry

I agree with Robin - networking of any kind is a far better use of your time than dealing with job boards. Also, don't neglect to have an up-to-date presence on LinkedIn.

  • I had good luck with LinkedIn and CareerBuilder.

Kouk's Closed?

My husband and I went there the other day, and it was closed. I peeked inside and the place looked cleaned out. There was no sign on the window with any explanation. My husband called the number to see if maybe there was an answering machine message with some sort of clarification, but the number was disconnected.

Does anyone know what happened??

  • EBKitty Stalking around EB

I read somewhere they were remodeling and maybe changing the business model all together but were non-committal about the topic. They had business so it seems incredible they would close. They had regulars. Don't know if they are on this board.

  • Passed by the other day. There is a paper in the window. Could be a permit. I didn't stop to read.has anyone walked by to see whats up? Fingers crossed!
