Bravo to Robert Murphy for getting 43% of the 39th ward!

Although he didn't win, this was a great showing and an indictment of "Marge".

Margaret Laurino 5,840 53%
Robert Murphy 4,740 43%

Was our mail in cold storage?

Today (February 24) I received a greeting card posted first class on Feb. 2 and several other important pieces of mail posted at the beginning of the month. My question is, who's in charge over there on Northwest Highway and how can they lose mail for three weeks? I guess I should consider myself lucky though as I did receive the multitude of mayoral and aldermanic election materials.

  • PattyM Concerned Citizen

We have the same problem over and over. Charge bills that never come, news
magazines that are out of date, no mail for three days in a row and then a huge pile.
ANd our mail generally comes between 6 and 7PM if at all.....

  • We have the same problem with mail in Norwood Park. Some days we get no mail at all. Magazines and other mail comes late.

  • Has anyone contacted the Chicago USPS postmaster and filed a complaint?

Our Very Own Tunnel?

Alderman Laurino "join[ed] Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Congressman Mike Quigley, and officials from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MRWD) to announce" that a storm water tunnel will be built in Albany Park. It is to begin in Eugene Park, go under Foster Ave, and 2 years and $45-55M later. empty into North Branch. She "will be engaging the Albany Park community through a series of community meetings and public forums." (per 2/17/15 email)

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

It's "Eugene Field Park" - Eugene Field was the name of the author of several poems and he lived in Chicago. Calling it "Eugene Park" is wrong.

Love this.

So happy to be able to communicate instanteanously with so many neighbors on so many platforms - EveryBlock, Twitter, Facebook, NextDoor.

Please know that I am listening to all of you, including those who disagree. I value all your opinions.

There has been lots of things happening lately in the 39th ward race, including that I received the Tribune's endorsement and a poll administrator at the N. Park Village Admin building who works for Ald. Laurino was removed.

I'm happy to answer any questions you all have about these or other issues. Please feel free to reach out on social media, on my website, or by phone 773.710.8431.

Alderman O'Connor

Now that the aldermanic election is 2 days away, It is hard to believe that the anti Alderman O'Connor dialogue that was so prevalent a few months ago on Every Block has literally dwindled to nothing when ideally it should be building to a fever pitch heading into Tuesday's election. Now that the aldermanic election is 2 days away, It is hard to believe that the anti Alderman O'Connor dialogue that was so prevalent a few months ago on Every Block has literally dwindled to nothing when ideally it should be building to a fever pitch heading into Tuesday's election. In her four years in office, our surly, do nothing alderman has been nothing but a go along puppet for Mayor Emanuel. Her office staff has been non-responsive and argumentative when requesting their assistance. She has no accomplishments to show for her $100,000+ part time job performance as alderman, and she she has been ineffectual in the airport noise debate. Days before the election then, it is not surprising to find crammed in our mailboxes, 5 -10 glossy photographed filled fliers of her promoting her do nothing self. Some even paid for no doubt by Emanuel, her puppet master. You can tell how utterly clueless and out of touch of our representative she has been by the fact that she includes photographs of herself with Emanuel in her mailings. Like that is going to draw her more votes!? Obviously, I would like to see either of the other viable candidates, Lomanto or Napolitano win the election. But you really have to wonder how realistic that will be with the proliferation of O'Connor yard signs and like I have said the absence of any current anti O'Connor dialogue.

Medical Marijuana Dispensary, Superdawg Could Be Ideal Neighbors

...city’s far Northwest Side. Union Group wants to open a medical marijuana dispensary at 6248 N. Milwaukee Ave., which would put the dispensary within spitting distance of Superdawg—insert your pothead munchies joke...

Superdawg's Newest Neighbor Could be a Medical Marijuana Clinic

Union Group of Illinois wants to open a dispensary in a vacant storefront at 6428 N. Milwaukee Ave., city officials said. The firm was one of two groups to win a state license to operate medical marijuana dispensary in Jefferson Township, which includes most of the Far Northwest Side.

But O'Connor said she would oppose the proposal for a dispensary near Milwaukee and Devon avenues, kitty-corner from the home of what many natives believe is the best Chicago hot dog, Superdawg.

Superdawg co-owner Scott Berman, whose parents Maurie and Flaurie founded the restaurant at 6363 N. Milwaukee Ave. in 1948, welcomed the idea of a marijuana dispensary so close to the drive-in.

  • B-NWside Lifetime Northwest Sider....

Perfect location for the patients, pick up your prescription and grab some dogs to satisfy the munchies. If I were the owners I would be happy too. O'Connor need to lighten up, or maybe light up...(LOL) All kidding aside, there is nothing wrong with the location of the dispensary.

  • cbuzz lifelong resident

don't see anything wrong with the location. As for O'Connor lighting up, not a good idea. If you've seen how poor a job she's already done, I think she's been high enough.

"County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia on Friday accused Mayor Rahm Emanuel of turning a deaf ear to skyrocketing complaints about O’Hare Airport jet noise and signed on to the demands of a noise-weary group of residents.

On Saturday, Garcia will join members of the anti-noise Fair Allocation in Runways (FAIR) Coalition at a park that lies directly beneath the flight path into a runway that has made Northwest Side residents miserable since it opened in October 2013. It averages flights every 3.5 minutes, FAIR contends.

Garcia and Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) are the only mayoral candidates as of early Friday evening who had signed on to FAIR’s “statement of principles,” which includes five specific demands.

Chief among them is a pledge not to “de-commission” any of four criss-crossing diagonal runways, even after a new parallel runway opens later this year. Killing off any diagonal runways could shift even more flights over city residents east of O’Hare already complaining about a bombardment of new jet noise.

Yet, another key demand is to halt an October 2013 take-off and landing plan in favor of a “fair allocation of runway traffic between existing and new runways” for both daytime and nighttime traffic."

Dish

Anyone know what's going on with Dish in Norwood Park? I saw permits issued in the everyblock email updates and saw tonight all the windows are covered in paper.

  • I saw a note about remodeling on their Facebook page too. I've seen places close "for remodeling" that never reopen, but I hope this is an exception.

  • Chuck Johnson Assistant Director, New Hope Community Food Pantry

Me too - I like to pop in there for lunch from time to time. We need a healthy restaurant scene in Norwood Park.

41st ward Aldermanic Race

Anybody got stats on who's up and who's not???

I haven't heard or seen one item from any candidate...any constructive info/answers to issues by candidates would be helpful.

  • Danny Hunt, we're gonna have to agree to disagree...for at least a couple reasons which I mentioned previously, a business owner/alderman both within the same ward or within the city limits is a HUGE conflict of interest.

  • I said there was/is a conflict of interest. Stated it's much less of one for Lomanto since his businesses are out of the ward. Maybe I didn't state that clearly.

I still do think the experience of running a business can be a positive in terms of giving city services, and the dealing with government from a business perspective can be a positive in terms of legislating city issues.
