Proposed apartment development near Jeff Park transit center.

To me, the investor sounds like another developer who thinks he/ she knows what's best for a neighborhood they don't know or live.

Ryan- I am surprised an urban planner would consider this a reasonable proposal as neighborhood standards and density/height are surely considerations in land use planning. Rs3 is the standard for 6 blocks east, 3 blocks north and in all other non- arterial corridors here. NW hwy is arterial, mixed use and the only land zoned near this standard is undeveloped. What urgent need dictates such a dramatic upzone? Did the advisory committee investigate available rental properties in the area or simply take a theoretical approach to TOD based on data and available light rail? If the latter, what neighborhood plan are you using to determine the transformation this spot zoning will trigger? In other words, what is this a conversation between a few guys in a room, or did you actually analyze this with existing conditions and market demand? If you look, you will find that rental property within walking distance of the JPTC is more than demand requires. Please do that, a few minutes online will show you what I mean. This development lacks need in this community. Every single family home and two flat for blocks in every direction has a high walkability score.

Kenji- stop calling people names. This proposal is not "change", it is transformation. And what you are reading is not fear and anxiety, it is opposition. Empathy is not easy, but it is useful when trying to be a good neighbor. Ridicule is the choice of bullies.

  • Calling someone a bully is name calling too. Be consistent.

Left turn signal going northbound at Foster.

Asked you about this on the previous EveryBlock and we still don't have one. And last year Department of water management had installed a new catchbasin in the alley down from my house. The concrete that was used has already cracked all the way through. But please, please get a left turn signal for south bound Milwaukee Ave.

  • K

Unless u live around that corner... Ppl don't know u turn when it turns green, going SW bound doesn't have a green for a few more seconds.

  • Yeah that one is super confusing. And dangerous!!!

Does anyone remember the old convenience store on the southwest corner of Milwaukee and Devon Aves?

I grew up on the edge of Jeff Pk/Norwood Pk E in the 60's and 70's, and remember a slight hill on the corner of Milwaukee and Devon, about where the former Dominick's parking lot is today. I grew up on the edge of Jeff Pk/Norwood Pk E in the 60's and 70's, and remember a slight hill on the corner of Milwaukee and Devon, about where the former Dominick's parking lot is today. On top of the hill was an old precursor to what we would now call a convenience store, the place you could go when the grocery stores were closed and you were out of bread or milk, or just had a taste for a candy bar. The store and hill were razed to make way for the Dominick's, but I recall that it seemed old, even in the 60's, and I think it had a large, illuminated clock outside above the door, musty wood floors and carried Hawthorne Mellody dairy products.

My uncle, who now lives in the area, wants to know what it was like before he moved there, and it's driving me crazy that I can't remember the name of the store! Does anybody's memory go back that far?

  • MR.''T'' BURGER

You're welcome Joan....I lived that way toward the end of it's days to just after the Dominick's was built. The period in between that empty lot served the needed purpose of becoming an informal gathering spot on Friday nights for NW side hot rodders.

    Was good times..... :-)

Looking for best place to buy poppyseed & nut rolls

My sister usually does the traditional holiday baking but this year she just doesn't have time. I'm not a baker and I've seen the poppyseed roll at the Produce Center. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any other place that sells both poppyseed and nut rolls.

Going rate for house/dog sitter?

I'd like to have someone house/dog sit for us for a week. The dog is super low maintenance - she just needs to be fed once a day and let out a couple of times during the day (into the back yard). The person would also need to sleep at our house . I am thinking of asking a friend to do it, but I want to know what the fair compensation for such a request might be?

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

I know someone who does this for a living, she charged me $50 a night, my dog is very hard to walk and I knew she would be able to handle him. It was kind of last minute that I needed her and I can't remember if she gave me a discount because we are acquainted.

  • If you were going with a friend I would say 30 per night and 15 per each additional visit that they let the dog out separate from spending the night. By the description and it being a friend $200 would seem far to me. I pay a neighbor-girl the same price it would cost us to board our dog.... the peace of mind he's at home and I know the funds are going to a friend.

  • efs6220 business manager

I think 250.00 for a week would be fair. Just make sure they are compatible and compassionate with your dog. If not your dog will be very unhappy!

Ultimate Frisbee

Hi, all. I was wondering if there are any regular Ultimate pick up games at Portage, Wilson, or Jeff Park. I recently finished college and haven't been very active since so I'd like to get active by throwing some discs. Casual or competitive, either is cool.

Risers has been the best for me over the last 4 years- prior to that had bad experiences at Abel, TLC and Touhy animal Hosp in Parkridge. Risers has lots of consistently good and conservative vets - they are not quick to jump to meds or tests not needed. I work as a physician assistant and although I am no vet I have a good understanding and can figure out pretty easy when a vet is being a bit aggressive with tests/meds ect. I also did not like the roaming dog at TLC. It's one thing to have a loose pet in a vets office,....it's another thing when that pet invades your space and makes you uncomfortable when you are trying to comfort your sick pet.

  • Mayfair animal clinic is amazing, all the vets, all the staff A+++++++++++++++. The price is reasonable too!

I expect my elected Alderman to "know this stuff". I would hope he's learned it on the job. His role includes real estate/property zoning. Approving changes or disapproving changes based on sound knowledge.

I essentially see an Alderman as a steward. Their job is to take care of us currently but a way bigger responsibility is to plan for the future. The future that will happen when I'm dead and gone. Decisions made now will affect the future of our neighborhoods. An Alderman isn't here forever.

  • We all have certain expectations of our elected officials. Sadly, far to many have had their own agendas, some have served time, some have gotten rich, some are on a power trip, and some are just plain dumb. I have been fortunate to know a few truly exceptional public servants. A public servant would be wise to consider who are the stakeholders now and in the future. We, as stakeholders should take an interest in matters that impact our community.

Tree trimming pick-up / collection service?

Hi all - any recommendations for a service to pick up branches/ big branch limbs we recently cut ourselves? We have a small truck load. Thanks in advance!

  • Sure - Giovanni's Tree Service is in Jefferson Park and very reasonably priced.
    I have used them before.
    773-777-8911

  • If you haul it all out to the curb and call 311 and ask for a forestry service the city will chip it up but be prepared to wait.

    Dennis

  • Call Norwood Park, I know they have a section of of Avondale, they use for people who bring trees, branches, bushes for mulch. If you dont mind hauling it there. Im sure they will take it. PS you dont get to keep the mulch its for the parks to use.

Putting a stop to doorstep litter? (RedPlum & Yellow Pages)

I am getting really tired of seeing these Tribune/RedPlum coupon newspaper things showing up at my house and every other house in the neighborhood, only to either build up on doorsteps or be taken directly to the recycle bin (at our house anyway; maybe others don't even recycle them). I am getting really tired of seeing these Tribune/RedPlum coupon newspaper things showing up at my house and every other house in the neighborhood, only to either build up on doorsteps or be taken directly to the recycle bin (at our house anyway; maybe others don't even recycle them). I believe that there are ways to opt out of receiving these things, but, by and large, it seems that most people have no desire to receive them. This is a huge waste of paper and an eyesore in all neighborhoods across Chicago as they sit out. I personally think that people should have to opt-in to receive these sorts of things not go through time consuming steps to *try* and opt-out of receiving them.

How is it that this sort of unsolicited material that arrives at our homes only to be thrown out is allowed? Why does the city not consider this to be littering or some other violation?

I hardly know anyone that uses a phonebook these days, yet they arrive on our doorsteps only to sit there for weeks/months rotting in the rain, until they are finally all picked up and disposed of. The Tribune/RedPlum papers may not sit out for as long as phone books usually do, but they arrive a couple times a week and I am getting really tired of picking them up.

Can't we get these things to stop? I know that there was a law suit filed over the RedPlum papers last summer; not sure how that ended up though, if it has even been resolved yet... http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/20318975-418/residents-sue-chicago-tribune-over-nuisance-coupons.html

Forestry Cutting Down Infected Trees

Most of the trees that are coming down are infected with the emerald ash borer, an invasive bug that eats the tree from the inside out. Almost every ash tree in the area is infected. And even if a tree looks well, the ash borer is likely killing the tree and creating a hazard.

It is going to take years for us to work through the devastation caused by this insect.

The good news is that the city is beginning to plant trees again. If you would like a tree, please email us. Please note, we cannot guarantee a specific type of tree.

Tree trimming

I have a large tree that needs trimming - by a licensed and insured service. Does anyone have a recommendation?

  • If the trees are in the parkway they need to be cared for by the City or a company authorized by the City. The Care of Trees is authorized. There are probably other companies, too.

We have used The Care of Trees for years.

    Good luck.

  • I don't know about what PeralK says about Care of Trees being authorized by the City to trim parkway trees...but I heard they have had and might still have a business relationship with Wright College, working on their trees and supplying them with wood chips for landscaping.

What a Good Idea!!!

Anybody notice the homemade doggie doo plastic bag dispensers secured to the trees around Onahan School??? Great thought!!! Anybody know how that came to be???

  • The girl scout troop made them for the neighbors that walk there dog's around the school. Now there should be no excuse for not picking up after there dogs. Great idea!!!

  • Our 2nd grade Brownie troop made them. Many people walk their dogs around the school without cleaning up after them. Our girls needed to earn a service patch and we came up with the idea after seeing them around Olympia Park. The girls were very excited to make them!!! Hopefully people will "get the message" and use the bags so our poor students don't have to step in doggie poop on their way to/from school. Thanks for noticing our hard work. :-)

  • Or step on doggy doo doo on the field where they have recess. I think it's a great idea and now I have a place to put my plastic bags.

Thank you....it is nice to have a place to share my conerns.
