Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

  • That's the biggest troll page around. Filled with psychos like Tami, Colleen, and Jacqueline. If it's so great, why are you here?

  • Oh and can't forget Sean.

City of Chicago: Integrys Electric Aggregation Program

I'm aware there has been much discussion regarding this program, I originally opted for the program and a year later later opted out. Yesterday, I received a letter from Integrys stating that if I don't opt-out by January 30, 2015 I'm automatically re-enrolled. I was surprised by this auto-enrollment, interesting.

  • Whats the difference in cost of electricty using dollars as a reference for an entire year of service comparing them to another company?

  • It really depends on your usage but it's minimal.

  • I think I calculated it before I switched back to com ed, it was something like a $7 savings for the year or something like that, I can't exactly remember. if you use a lot of electric, your probably better off with integrys electric aggravation program, but don't quote me I used the cub calculator to check which was better for me

Anyone but arena

No trolls, people post like adults. You don't have to put up with the immature postings of arena's trolls.

  • Oh honey, we don't need you to admit it. Tell Junior Art Garfunkel wants his hair back.

  • Nice try MaxwellJ. I get emailed the troll list then asked to name them? Pass it on? I don't want to participate in this game.

Whomever posted the Business review for Sportif Importer

Certainly struck many chords on Yelp, me being one of them and I didn't post the review. I had similar negative experiences and learned the tried and true: Rudy's on Irving. It maybe a 30 minute walk but, it beats the alternative . . . just an FYI

Question

Those of you who are still talking/texting on your cell phone while driving, in spite of it being illegal for more than a year, would you please explain your reasoning? I'm just curious.

  • Dan Bihler 40 plus years construction experience.

    I never heard anything...

  • Paula, Belmont Terrace 9-year resident

Honestly, I can't really comment on JP station because I don't use it. But 25 million sounds like a lot of money! Don't know the source of those funds, but that sum could certainly be used for a lot of worthy causes.

It is predicted to be Arena and Garrido in the run off. At this point I will take Garrido or either of the other 2. Please get out and vote and spread the word that we need to vote on Feb 24th for Anyone but John Arena! I am not sure if links are allowed here so please go to facebook and search Anyone But Arena, Thank You!

Hi there neighbors! We are looking to adopt a puppy next month and I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion or past experiences to draw upon to help me decide where to adopt. Here are a few facts about us:

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Thank you!

Stinky basement foul smell moving through house?

I noticed a smell in my basement a few weeks ago. I really just thought it was a dead mouse / rat since we have that issue going on. So I have been looking for a dead decaying rodent. No luck.

I read on here that the smell may be coming from the floor drain pipes? Can anyone give me more information. The smell is starting to reach the living room and kitchen in the past weeks. Thanks

  • p-trap is below the wash tub. It holds water in it so air doesn't flow from the drain pipes in the floor up into the basement. If the p-trap becomes empty in a week it's probably leaking at it's base. turn the water on in the sink for a minute. Put a bunch of toilet paper right under the p-trap. Come back the next day or two and see if the toilet paper is wet.

  • Mmm easy enough. Thanks!

Jefferson Park Transit Center To Get $25M Renovation

The $25 million renovation of the transit center at 4917 N. Milwaukee Ave. — which includes stops for nearly a dozen buses, the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line and Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line, is expected to include an improved bus turn-around, new canopies, lighting, escalators and stairs, officials said.

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150123/jefferson-park/jefferson-park-transit-center-renovation-get-5m-from-tif-districts

The Renovation will be funded in part by $5M from the Jefferson Park and Portage Park TIF Districts.

During the station renovation, a new crosswalk will be installed across Milwaukee Avenue, Brugh said. Plans for the crosswalk have been in the works since May 2013, when 45th Ward residents set aside $125,000 of Arena's discretionary budget for the project.

  • There have been more than a few times when I've seen a rat here and there crossing over the railroad tracks upstairs by Metra. The problem has not gone away. Can someone please take ownership and fix this problem please?

  • Whats wrong with rats on the railroad property? There's deer too.

Lavergne blocked at Montrose

I probably have missed the reasoning for this, but I'd really love to know how you have the juice to close down a street just to park your crane? I see no work being done in the spot, yet the crane sits there between two sets of fencing?

  • Drewski Don't feed the trolls.

It has drastically reduced the ridiculous amount of cut-through traffic in the neighborhood though. That has been a welcome relief.

  • My taxes pay for your street, I can cut through wherever I want.

Truck Driver-

A truck driver was driving along on! the freeway. A sign comes up that reads,
"Low bridge ahead." Before he knows it, the bridge is right ahead of him and
he gets stuck under the bridge. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a
police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks around to the
truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck, huh?"
The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas."

Update: Long/Argyle

As a neighbor who is not in favor of up zoning this parcel, I called the alderman's office to get an update. It seems there is no current proposal by the developer. Whew! Just wanted to throw that out there as it seems many people are actively worried that a project is in the works. It is not; it is stalled.

  • Maybe it's in the water supply?

  • Ryan Richter Transportation Planner in Jefferson Park

That initial concept in the Press was not even an official proposal anyway.

I have seen only two threads asking for good quality meats and veggies. I see far more complaints about how much low quality food costs. Including one about finding cheaper meat compared to jewel. You get what you pay for. We get ours from the family farms that come to the farmers market. All of the meat is ethically raised and processed. The costs are only slightly higher. A pound of chicken runs $6-$7. The veggies are non-gmo and little or no pesticide.

Whole foods step 4 is also a good choice. However, even step one is far better quality compared to jewel. The up front cost to switch to non-gmo and organic food was costly. Now that it's done our food bills are very reasonable.

Kouk's Closed?

My husband and I went there the other day, and it was closed. I peeked inside and the place looked cleaned out. There was no sign on the window with any explanation. My husband called the number to see if maybe there was an answering machine message with some sort of clarification, but the number was disconnected.

Does anyone know what happened??

  • Oh wow! That is a shame. I didn't go often, as it wasn't close to me, but when I did, I enjoyed the coffee and browsing.

Well, best of luck to them!

  • They told me they are going to remodel.

His wife sympathizes and makes him a cup of tea. As they sit down she says, "Why don't you take my brother with you and give it one more try."

"That's no good" sighs Arthur. "Your brother's a hundred and three. He can't help."

"He may be a hundred and three", says the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect."

So the next day Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing and squints down the fairway.

He turns to the brother-in-law. "Did you see the ball?"

"Of course I did!"

"Where did it go?" says Arthur.

"I can't remember."

Great Indian food in Jeff Park/Portage Park

Any recommendations? I know of great ones outside of the neighborhood but would love closer to us.

  • I like Himshikar very much. Kent is right that it's Nepalese/Himalayan, not what you might think of as purely Indian food. Still, someone with a hankering for aloo mahkani and naan will be able to find plenty to like about it.

  • Brian eater, drinker

Huge fan of Himshikar. We order in from them with embarrassing frequency. They have some good Himalayan options, but they also have plenty of excellent Indian standards. Definitely worth checking out.
