Armed home invasion at Jefferson Park

Really? Enough of the excuses now.. we are getting planes every :30 seconds.. but we put up with taxes on everything, political nonsense etc. Because this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood. I also had a break in shortly after moving in. I first posted here because we had a catalytic converter stolen, then we got flashed my a drunk at Veteran's Square and my friend chased him down, now this .. way too close to home. I'm with Dennis. Who is up and answers their door @ 3:30 am? Need more facts.

I do not intend to play blame the victim, but often it feels like the entire story is not being told. It has always seemed interesting to me that burglary reports more often than not state that the criminals got off w/ large amounts of cash, jewelry, expensive merchandise, etc. And that people accosted on the street are often relieved of expensive items or large sums of cash as well. To read these in a vacuum, you could draw a couple different conclusions.
One, that everyone walks around carrying large amounts of cash/expensive items, so the odds are like shooting fish in a barrel that the criminals will score when they choose their victim.
Two, that the criminals are just super lucky, and manage to hit the jackpot w/ great accuracy when they choose their victims or dwellings to rob.
Three, that there are a LOT more incidents happening in addition to those we read about, where nothing is taken and no one is harmed, so therefore they are not reported to the police or in the news, which skews the success rate curve in favor of those incidents that scored a lot of loot.
Or four, that in many of the incidents reported, there is additional information and/or extenuating factors that are not reported, such as that the victim was observed leaving an ATM w/ cash or carrying the coveted items, or that they were known (by the offender) to carry large amounts of cash for possibly nefarious purposes. Likewise in the case of burglary, that the criminals and victims somehow knew each other or had mutual acquaintances, which gave them advance knowledge of the victim's address and the valuables contained inside, making it a better bet to hit than someplace random.

I was broken into, they took a DVD player, leather jacket, jewelry .. nothing really worth a ton.. except sentimental value .. my engagement ring (custom designed and I didn't feel comfortable wearing downtown everyday), and my deceased brother's high school ring. I really would like his ring back, the rest no problem... it's stuff. The detectives who came didn't think I was "targeted" .. they thought it was opportunity.

Little Intruders in my home

Sorry I didnt know what to put this topic under
So my house has a visitor aka a mouse. I am wondering if other residents in Jefferson Park are having the same problem. I know a few weeks ago we had a huge mouse come in but that was because we had the basement back door open for fresh air (so much for fresh air) for a short period of time. If you can tell me if you have had these problems recently or in the past and tips to remove them. Thanks!

And Ill be searching my home for any new entry ways as well.

  • My Great Aunt had a really bad mouse problem a few years ago. She had an old and sickly cat that didn't chase after the mice. But a few months into her mouse infestation she took in an alley cat that turned out to be pregnant. After those new kittens arrived the mice vanished. She kept 2 kittens and the rest were adopted. She has had no mice problems since the kittens.

Concrete Stair Repair Recommendations?

The concrete stairs in front of my bungalow that lead to the front door started to crumble towards the sides on a few of the steps and i am hoping to have them repaired before the winter hits and hopefully in such a way that shoveling and salting them doesn't make them crumble again.

Does anyone have any recommendations for anyone that could help fix our stairs?

  • I got four tuckpointing bids and three concrete bids when for my bunglow's front steps and face brick. There two are the winners after I looked at other nearby work of theirs. Neither was the lowest bid, but I am very happy with the work.

If you have just a few cracks don't use that at all. Get Sika brand self leveling concrete repair. In the masonry area at Home Depot. Take a steel brush. Clean out the crack. Dispense in to crack. Sit back and enjoy.

Note: Sika tubes are for smaller repairs.

If the crack is super thin then leave it until next year. Otherwise you will need to cut out the crack to accept the sealant.

Unfortunate Event

My father was riding his bike on Tuesday Sept. 2nd,2014 around 6:30 pm and was hit by a car. It was at the intersection of austin and lawerence. He was thrown from his bike, and left on the road. The car fled, and no one helped him. All he knows is that it was a black car. He is now in the hospital with a broken leg and staples on his head. He just had surgery today. I hope someome saw something, because this is horrific. I had more faith in my neighborhood to help someone in need.

  • CJ, How is he doing now?

  • Thanks for asking. He is recovering slowly. 52 staples!! Still no word on who did it. I asked local businesses and checked the few surveillances they had, no luck. He's getting there slowly but surely.

Sears won't survive past 2016?

Here is an excerpt from yesterday's article in Crain's Chicago

Fitch Ratings today downgraded Sears Holdings Corp.'s credit rating to CC from CCC, a move driven by the retailer's continuing decline in profitability and the rate at which it's burning through cash. The agency warned that Sears may not have enough funding to support operations beyond 2016.

If Sears goes down, what will happen to Six Corners? I don't love the big ugly building and rarely shop at Sears, but it'll be exponentially worse if the store closes.

I am extremely disappointed that the Federal Aviation Administration has decided to ignore pleas from three members of Congress, dozens of aldermen and suburban elected officials, and thousands of resident to complete a new environmental impact study on the impacts of the O'Hare Modernization Plan.

The O'Hare Modernization Plan, which was first proposed over a decade ago, was approved at the local, state and federal level. It appears that residents did not have the correct data to judge the impact of the plan. Additionally, none of the public meetings were located in areas impacted by the changes.

Despite this, the FAA Administrator has the audacity to call the process "one of the most comprehensive" ever conducted. I could not disagree more. Any process that seems designed to shut out public input is not legitimate.

I will continue to support the efforts of U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley, Tammy Duckworth, and Jan Schakowsky to bring about new FAA hearings into the our aircraft noise issues and the modernization plan.

In the mean time, I attend every O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) meeting and support the commission working toward solutions such as an expansion of the 'fly quiet' program by the Chicago Department of Aviation, more noise monitors on the far Northwest Side, and the inclusion of more residential homes in the O'Hare noise abatement program.

I will continue to strongly advocate for those solutions.

The ONCC monitors and tracks complaints made by residents within communities impacted by the airport and air traffic overhead. I encourage you to log your aircraft noise complaints through the city's website.

https://servicerequest.cityofchicago.org/web_intake_chic/Controller?op=csrform&restrict_loc=Y&invSRType=AVN

The complaints will be used for future discussions with the ONCC, FAA, and Chicago Department of Aviation. Please do not hesitate to contact my office should you have further questions regarding this issue.

The hubby and I decided to check out this new addition to the neighborhood tonight. We were there around 8:00 p.m. and there were 2 other couples eating in. We were greeted at the door and told to sit wherever we liked. There was plenty of seating, so we grabbed one of the 4 tops.

The menu was very simple. It's just a paper menu (not sure if this will change in the future) and had the basics covered - tacos, tortas, quesadillas, burritos, carne asada, enchiladas, and a few other items.

The waiter, George, introduced himself and brought us some chips with red and green salsas. They were both terrific. In fact, I could have eaten the green salsa with a spoon. Fresh, obviously homemade, not overly spicy, but just perfect.

I had the carne asada dinner and the hubby had the 2 taco dinner. Each came with rice and beans, and each was $4.99 (what a steal!).

It only took about 10 minutes for our order to come out, and everything was piping hot. My carne asada was super tender, and cooked to perfection. Mexican places sometimes have a habit of overcooking, but not tonight!

I tried both of the tacos the hubs had. One was steak, and it was terrific, but I was more surprised by the chorizo taco he had. I don't usually like chorizo because it's so greasy, but this one wasn't at all. It was actually really delicious.

The rice and beans were great, and we both (surprisingly) polished off our plates.

At the end of the meal, our total with a Coke and 2 full dinners plus tax came to just over $12. WHAT?! I've spent more than that at a fast food place!

To sum it up, I'll be back. I'll probably be back a lot. George was very nice, and asked us to please spread the word, so I'll be posting this review on Yelp as well. I was 100% satisfied (which, if you know me, you know isn't easy to accomplish).

I hope that you, as neighbors, will give this place a chance. They obviously worked hard to make this restaurant work, and they deserve a shot.

Lost a gift card in Mariano's lot- Sunday morning

This is a long shot but I've got my fingers crossed...
My husband went to Mariano's on Elston this morning at 10:00am and in addition to groceries, bought a $25 Toys R Us gift card. He loaded the car and when he got home, realized the little brown Hallmark bag with his receipts and the gift card were not there. We're thinking it slipped out of our bags into the cart or onto the ground.
If anyone found it, can you please contact me? We've already called Mariano's but it hasn't turned up.
Thank you!

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

I wonder if Mariano's keeps a record of gift cards, or if your credit card company could help--cancel it or something. Do you still have your store receipt?

  • Jen

Unfortunately, the store receipt was in the same bag as the gift card.
I think this one gets chalked up to being in a hurry and learning a lesson.
