  • That's the next cultural attraction that JP needs: NIMBY Faire.
We could hold it in Gladstone Park.

  • Oh, I agree with you on the positivity issue. If we can't support each other in this neighborhood we'll get nowhere fast. Even though some of us are NIMBY's and others (not many) are fat cats, we will have to work things out.

Alright, so what is an "artificial upper limit" then?

J. Arena interviewed on radio Saturday

I wanted to thank Alderman Arena for making the effort to be on the Dick Kay show yesterday. I found his discussion of current politics in Chicago and the mayor's machine informative and I fully support the direction he is taking as our Alderman.

Man sleeping in the bushes

I discovered a man sleeping in the bushes of my building yesterday. He was charging his cell phone and appeared drunk when I yelled at him to leave. In hindsight I should have called the police but I was looking for this to be as nonconfrontatonal as possible. He didn't look homeless but that doesn't mean he isn't. I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of this in the area and to keep and eye out for it.

Again with the television/internet service

Currently we're at $75/mo for Dish and about $40/mo for verrry slooow internet with AT&T. Both services seem intent on raising rates at least once a year.
My mom lives with us and we're paying about $27/mo for her very basic Xfinity service.
So we'd be saving a little cash but getting some upgrades. But I have the feeling I'm entering into a contract with Satan because of some of the Comcast stuff I've heard. I've also visited the office on Milwaukee and it was not a place of happiness and good Karma.

some input here...? We've pretty much talked out the dog poop issue...

  • I switched from Comcast to AT&T and am T.H.R.I.L.L.E.D. Comcast is horrible, and I have no problems with AT&T. I work from home, the internet is perfect. Don't get Comcast.

When I have had a problem, meaning outage, it's been at the connection on the pole outside (corrosion). A daughter and family had U/Verse a month, having been lured by a promo offer, for a month and had multiple different headaches with it, returning to Comcast.

For 6 months I left Verizon to go with AT&T for cell service which was a nightmare of static and dropped calls - so bad that I was able to wiggle out of contract without a dime in penalties. Went back to Verizon and still satisfied. Wouldn't touch AT&T product/service again in any way, shape or form.

Our condo water bill doesn't help us save water and money

I am a new condo owner, God help me. We pay our water bill in common, from monthly assessments. I am a new condo owner, God help me. We pay our water bill in common, from monthly assessments. I've been forced to help our Board, as you too will be if you ever buy a condo, and to look at the water bills, and it eventually dawned on me that they are enormous! So, after pointing this out with some wonder, I was given the job of investigating, and the water department took a moment to look at our bill, our readings, and so forth, and commented that every time (save one) the meter had been read in the last six months, a code indicated the water had 'been running,' and that that particular code usually meant there was a leak somewhere.

This information regarding a code does not appear on the bill or on the online account. If I had not called, and if a particular question had not triggered the response with the information about the code, I'd have been--unenlightened.

Of course now we are on a mad course to find the leak, and anyone who has ever lived in a condo full of senior Polish retirees knows how much better the scene is than anything HBO could imagine.

But here's the thing: this leak has been going on for a long time. And we had no way to tell. It shouldn't be like that. The water bill should contain any codes the meter reading finds, so owners have a fighting chance to rectify any leaks, right? And another piece of information that we could have used is some kind of comparison of our usage with similar sized buildings. That way we would have known that our January bill was way out of line.

I don't know what I want. A hearing, sympathy, if you know somebody who knows somebody, couldn't they get this done in the software that generates the water bills? A promise from the alderman that this being a terrific idea he'll make sure it gets done?

I feel really really bad for wasting water, and I want to help make sure others have enough info to stop water waste (and money!!!) ahead of time. What is to be done? (Lenin)(he had water bills)

  • re the bb's, they tried one procedure that didn't work, so they had to heat her apartment to, I believe, 120F for a few hours, done. Luckily they didn't get into my unit, but mgmt. inspected twice, each time before treatment.

Thanks, Nick. Our meter must not fall into that category with the guarantee, because the meter isn't where you can see it, ALAS. It's in the parkway under a heavy cover and I'm not sure if you can even 'see' the dial from the top side. They read it with an electronic thing. Given how terribly expensive water is, it sure seems cruel to the population to put your 'check' where you can't check. Like an open spigot to your bank account!

I bet somebody could run for alderman on a reform the water bill ticket. Mayor! Most of us are paying the money blindly. Anyway, we were in our building. We may have had this problem for years and years.

Street repair/repaving in NP East?

I've seen a significant number of sidewalk repairs around Norwood Park East recently which makes me wonder: are street repairs coming any time soon? These pics are just a sample taken from a Google tour of our neighborhood.

The houses, sidewalks and parks are so well kept ... how could the
city let streets in one of its few middle-class tax bases get this bad? The bombed-out look is as embarrassing as it is destructive to tires and suspensions.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has info on upcoming repairs!

  • Tom

Natural Speed Bumps, slows traffic down in the neighborhood. Also, what is the date of these pictures? Is that what the street looks like today?

  • There's no shortage of actual speed bumps to keep traffic slow ... not sure of these photos' date but the could have all been taken today. The streets are horrendous.

Internet provider....

Hello...I have clear internet and was told that in November they are closing...it appears that Sprint will take over but not merge with them. Anyway, I have Dish TV and contacted them to see if they would set me up with internet services...they said they do not have internet services in my area. So, what to do? Sprint has the attachable internet services, however, I would rather use the modem and connect via wifi all other devices without having to deal with alot of problems...I am hooked up and no need to bother with it...but that will end soon. Any thoughts....? Would be much appreciated.

Our clear tower was decommissioned last August, so I feel your pain! I was unable to find another portable internet service with unlimited data. We would up going to comcast. We started with 25 mbps for $30 a month (our own modem and router), guaranteed for 12 months. A few months in, they offered us 50 mbps + broadcast cable + HBO for $40/month guaranteed for 18 months, with a free cable modem. We accepted the offer, didn't hook up the cable, and run HBO-GO through our roku.

We used chicagoland spray foam. Had several quotes for both spray foam and traditional. Spray foam is a lot more expensive but fit our needs. In order to go with traditional we would not be able to use our attic for storage, plus our furnace is in our attic so it would always be warmer. The gentleman (Jeff, Steve and Dan) at Chicagoland spray foam were very professional and explained everything very well. We have already seen a significant drop in our gas and electric bills.

The only issue we had was that we played phone tag a lot, but that also may have been because we were in contact with them around Christmas and New Years. They are a small company so the guys that install the insulation are also the owners

Crews will be starting on the Central water main replacement in the intersection of Milwaukee and Central starting Wednesday, April 8. Traffic will be open, but during rush hour there may be slight delays so commuters might wish to avoid the intersection.

Obtained from CACC Transfer FB Page

There were literally zero dog cages available for the strays, owner surrenders and confiscates the shelter is legally required to take in as they arrive. The fact that there were no reports of feline respiratory illness in cats doesn't surprise me. The vets don't do PCR test when you show up with a cat with respiratory disease. And when they put down a cat with pneumonia - they don't send a sample for testing either (and that's the first stage of testing for most cats, owned or feral). So how would they know?

What they will do is - they will implement the testing procedures now, and in 2 weeks we will know something. Same way as with the dog influenza. They found out in 2 weeks. 2 weeks is not a good response time.

Allexa it can take a week or more to identify certain pathogens, viruses etc in humans. Vets are doing a pretty good job. I think we are lucky that some vets actually took samples and sent them out. IVet clinics send out for many different tests because maintaining an in house lab to test for all these things is cost prohibitive. Before you heap all the blame on vets many pet owners refuse more testing because they don't want to spend the money.

We don't know if this virus is affecting feral cats because they have no owners. Our cat is an indoor cat so he could only catch this virus if we or our dogs brought it into the home. We have kept our dogs away from direct contact with any other dogs and we don't go to dog parks we are also avoiding the regular parks so hopefully our guys won't catch this. I know if one our pets became ill at this point we would gladly pay for the testing and if my vet didn't offer I would ask.
