This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

Enough of this bad mouthing of what's been a good store & an asset to the community. Enough of all the nasty talk about them on here. It seems since Every Block returned it's been taken over by trolls who seem to want to stir up the hate.

Just an update. Talked to my friend from the wine tasting today at work. She said I was wrong - the owner was ONLY referring to Logan as closing. Lincoln (as many have said above) will be open. Still doesn't answer some of the other concerns above (pressure/dirty pool to prevent new business) but seems if true or false, that ship has sailed. I guess the take-away is that a great shop is leaving our neighborhood. Hopefully the new place will get up and running quickly and we can all enjoy it.

Carmenza’s Day Care opening a second location in Logan Square — right behind Haas Park

Parents always seem to be looking for good daycare options, and Carmenza’s Day Care is *terrific*. Their new second location is great, as it’s right behind Haas Park — on the 2400 block of Washtenaw. Best way for finding decent renters in Humboldt Pk

I have tried Craigslist and the Reader, and as soon as anyone looks at the address they get spooked and cancel the showing or don't show up.
I am new to the neighborhood in a 3 flat (close to Hamlin and Division) and was wondering if there are neighborhood newspapers or announcements anyone knows of that I could post an ad, or if anyone has any other resources to find a decent tenant in Humboldt Pk/West Humboldt Pk area. Was thinking of visiting churches next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

  • From my experience Craigslist works. You have to have good pictures and most important right price. When nobody respond to your ad most likely price is too high. Also one ad is not enough, you have to have at least two ads per day. You are able to renew them every two days. other mentioned sites especially pad mapper, postlets are worth to try.

  • Can you post a link? My friend is looking for a place.

Free Wood for bonfires/firepits

There is a bunch of free wood in the alley behind 830 N. Hamlin.
Most need to be cut as there are some long pieces.
Must have come from an old floor or deck, some pieces are long, but you can cut them for firewood.

  • Are they painted, sealed or stained? If so, burning them is a sure way to infuse toxins and carcinogens into your s'more recipe.

  • abok abok

I have no idea. I am just offering that if people want it it's there, people can make their own call on that one.

  • govs20 Pro Engineer, Amateur runner, Ukie Villag resident

If it's scrap lumber from a hardwood floor or deck, then it's pretreated lumber that would be incredibly toxic (and illegal!) to burn. If the ash were to leach into the city's storm sewer system, it's essentially like pouring straight arsenic into the Chicago river. Ever wonder why you don't see people swimming in the river? Hopefully this stuff is disposed of properly.

The house is not abandoned and it is not a story of little old grandma. I see twenty-somethings coming in and out of there all the time.

I know some neighbors have already explained the problem to them to no avail they just let it grow au naturale.

Anybody have experience getting able bodied neighbors to do the right (and lawful) thing?

New Life Church, corner of Homan and Division, getting prepped for new sidewalks.

I know, I know. Sometimes a new sidewalk is just a new sidewalk.

There have been so many unmet infrastructure and maintenance needs for so many years in this Ward, it seems odd that this improvement would be given priority over tax-paying resident's longstanding problems.

I live on the corner of Division and Homan and seen first hand the moves the alderman and the Pastor Choco has done. 1st the bus stops moved back in front of my house, then the other bus stop moved, now the new sidewalks look on the eastside of homan across from the new sidewalks. The damages left from the construction trucks when the Church was being built. We were told all that will be repaired and still nothing. The sidewalk on the church side which was fine and better then other areas in the ward had VIP services. No one had mention the new driveway on the division side being put in by the main entrance. Maldonado don't care about his ward and I can't wait until he is voted out.

  • Then of course, there was the repaving of Division, a thoroughfare that, compared to so many streets in the area certainly didn't need it. Then of course, there was the repaving of Division, a thoroughfare that, compared to so many streets in the area certainly didn't need it. Sure, it's nice to drive on new pavement anywhere, but why devote limited funds to pavement that most charitably would be described as wholly unessential? One little section around the Metra underpass, with a patch on one pothole at Homan & Division, was all that should have qualified. Streets with huge potholes and other major problems persist all over. One example, although it's probably not in the immediately adjacent area—if that's an overwhelming factor—is Logan Blvd. Now there's a major trafficked avenue that could have used a complete overhaul virtually its entire length, not the near-useless little patches poorly installed which will disappear with the next hard winter, and haven't made driving through it any better.

Overall, why is our tax money going to make a church have nicer city infrastructure when so much of the rest of the area that needs prompt attention is more or less ignored? Is there any effective way to complain, or better yet, change this offensive behavior and waste of governmental funds?

At the very least, perhaps the time has come to get together and vote out the alderman. And demand full transparency on all related matters.

Lawndale/Fullerton Melee

Anybody have any insight into the dust up near Fullerton and Lawndale last night around 11:45 p.m. or so? I had to 'make and take' a red wiggler bin to get full credit for Master Composter degree and the winter had them 'especially happy' in the basement so I have two huge bins ready to share. You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

Each time I call, I talk to a receptionist and then I am transferred to a voice mail where I leave a message and never get a return call. The last time I called I told the receptionist that I had left several messages, so she said she would give the right person my contact information, and I still never heard back. I was calling about simple things such as: recycling for our block and what can be done about all the solicitation material that is left on our front steps and gates. I even called to try and make an appointment with the Alderman to discuss items in person since I work until 5:30 and cannot make it to his Monday community meetings by 6pm, but did not get a call back. His website says “An operator will take your contact information and record your issues and concerns. Then you will be referred to the proper staff or receive a call back.” But this is not true. Has anyone had any luck with Alderman Maldonado’s office?

    @Tracy -

    1) I have no context into your situation so I'm not making any judgements. It's also your right to decry the CACC (which, by the way, isn't a "business" - it's a government entity).

    2) Rescues, including PAWS, do not just blindly take in animals and tell the individual(s) releasing those animals that they are taking them. PAWS, like the CACC, is very transparent, and will tell you immediately where the animal will be placed. Sometimes that's with them, but often times, you are correct - they often go to the CACC (PAWS is usually close to full at all times, as that's the entire point of their organization). However there is no conspiracy to "hide" this - it is in fact spelled out clearly when releasing an animal to them.

    3) There is no issue with you stating what is already transparent information, but you clearly have an ax to grind with the CACC. You may consider the CACC "nasty", but editorializing an organization that's both needed in the city (by the population as well as animal rescues) and actively working towards animal welfare is doing no one any favors with your narrow viewpoint. You may have had an unfortunate situation with the CACC, but it's also unfair to paint the org as universally reviled because of it (hence my comments).

    4) I'm not going to have a discussion on CACC politics and operations and further derail this thread.

If that dog's owners cannot be found (and as @rogerparker says, owners are told to check the CACC first and foremost) and she ends up at the CACC, I can guarantee you that as long as she's not horribly reactive to anyone who approaches her that dog will stay there MAYBE a month (more like two weeks at most). Dogs like that have no problem finding homes and are snapped up instantly at the CACC.

  • Hopefully this little one finds her home! If not if you need someone to take her in or if she will be able to foster/adopt please let me know. I am looking for a beagle and a female at that. I have had no luck so far but I have...

I have used Creative Glass and Mirror for an all custom tile base frameless shower stall, and they installed including readjustment by taking it back and grinding to fit the sloping floor etc.but they were not cheap (close to $2000). In a more standard installation, I have used the Dreamline frameless shower door that is available online at Faucet Direct for about $600 (door+12" wide stationary glass for an alcove, so no sides), and they have glass available at increments of one inch, with further adjustments made at the wall end with an adjustable aluminum extrusion, so it may be possible to find one that fits. Also, when one of the tempered glass pieces imploded while installing it, they said no problem and sent me a replacement, with no charge. I hope this helps.

  • Last November, I closed on a beautiful home here in Logan Square. In the master bath there is a fancy custom tile shower with 5 sprayers. The only thing it was missing was a nice glass door. My wife wanted it to be a steam shower sans a real steamer.

Based on a recommendation from EB, we used Ashland Glass and the door is beautiful. Half inch thick glass (very sturdy), and done beautifully. I'll be using them again for some of my next projects. Big fan!

  • If you do indeed have a termite infestation, you need to contact the city immediately!

Are you sure they are termites...and this is serious actually.

  • Thanks for the offer, but I'm just good at helping set them free. I saw lil' Django yesterday, and seems to be doing quite well.

Provenance Food and Wine to close Sep 27 & what you can do about it

In a nutshell, new landlords didn't renew their lease and they will have to vacate by September 27.

http://chicagoist.com/2014/08/07/provenance_food_wines_logan_square.php

Apparently, Alderman Moreno wants to help, so calling all neighbors to call/write the Alderman to help Provenance stay at its current location through the holiday season. This is the only way the owners will at least be in a position to consider keeping the store in the neighborhood, given the financial burden of moving. The alderman's chief of staff's e-mail is Raymond.Valadez@cityofchicago.org.

Andrew-I think public officials would label the answer to all of your questions under the heading, "constituent services." The questions you pose are imponderables, and have existed since the birth of government. Why did one who pled his case before Hammurabi deserve to be recognized before the thousands of other cases that could have warranted the emperor's attentions? Ask, and you may or may not receive. Provenance asked, they received. As for the standard you seek to understand, that answer can only be provided by Hammurabi, err...the Alderman's office. Everyblock's users won't provide your sought for objectivity.

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I attended the community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here.

Was this the doings of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of the neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's your right to do business in the space only.

Signed a very disappointed FORMER customer.
