Humboldt Park Gang Banger States 'we've been here and were here to stay"

On another EB Thread "Mayoral Race" a self proclaimed gang member talks about how he will fight to stop gentrification and yuppies from taking over HP and wanted Chuy for the city and Juanita Irizarry for the 26th ward elected to accomplish this goal. This person goes on to state what great things gangs have done for HP and that gentrification is ruining these things by forcing fellow gang members to move out of HP. I wish I would have read his thread earlier because several of his statements were pulled from EB before I could read them. I am astonished when he proudly writes that most of HP residence were criminals and gang bangers working together against good neighbors who called the police back in the 80's and 90's! I found it interesting that he states he attends beat meetings and will use every legal way to stop the undesirables from taking over HP, like they did in Wicker Park. I started this thread because the other threads topic was not about gang bangers and here non-gang members can read what a confessed gang banger thinks about them and how gangs "won't give up without a fight"-" It won't be as easy as you think to get rid of us"! This is what is happening in HP right now. Criminals in HP are working to get politicians elected who they believe will keep them living here and stop the evils of gentrification from occurring. Do they think they can stop progress or law abiding citizens from moving into HP? What about all the good people of HP that they have been victimizing in decades past? Do they think they will allow this to happen? This topic is now open for discussion. Is it wrong to want to make HP a beautiful place again to raise a family at the expense of moving criminals and gang bangers out?

Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

Hey neighbors! My roommate lost her keys (in the snow? In a puddle? Help!) somewhere between her car parked at Kimball and Milwaukee and the Logan theater. They are Honda keys with at least three other misc. house keys. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I did not buy a home by an el, or a bus or a train or even on a main traffic thoroughfare or intersection. After 16 years, I now live in a neighborhood with traffic congestion, overrun with outsiders, disturbing our peace and quiet and trashing our lawns. These kids don't live here. Why not move Chi-arts to their neighborhood? If it was closer to their home, their parents wouldn't have to drive to pick them up. At least, have some consideration and relocate it on a public transportation line! In the meantime, I am applying for a reduced assessment that will more accurately reflect the reduction in our quality of life. Oh.. I am also looking for a new Alderman...

I live in the same area AND my kid goes to ChiArts so how about that Washtenaw1? Every school, every neighborhood, every block is going to have problems, there will always be a bad apple and the grass is ALWAYS greener. As tapdancemom pointed out, these kids come from all over the city and have had to change schools, schedules, travel arrangements and their lives to be in this school because they WANTED TO and have been CHOSEN to be there. They are in school from 8-5 everyday, working hard then come home to do homework, practice, chores and so much more. I am only grateful to have such hard working, dedicated kids attending school in my neighborhood. The inconvenience of the 8 and 5 o'clock drop off/pick up times are no more irritating than the dibs we are still seeing strewn all over our street a month after the snow, the mountains of ice that that block the walkways and parking spaces or the potholes that kill my car. It's Chicago, I love it, I embrace it and I support it.

Everyday it takes me 1hr 40min to get to and from the South Loop. It's ridiculous. I blame the fact they got rid of the Western Xpress and than add to it that Ventra sucks (takes like 5 taps to get it to say go). The commute to and from work is killing me. By car, the drive is only 15-20min max, but as I said by bus its like 1hr 40min. so I'm looking for different options. The Homan/Kimball bus runs awesome and I was thinking I can take that to the Kedzie/Lake Green Line Station and take the Green Line to Roosevelt. However, I'm wondering how safe it is? Does anyone know? I'm a little white girl just fyi. Please let me know. I want my life back.

I didn't know they had an inside station. That's great news. There's been so much crime on the Green Line that I wanted to double check to see if anyone knew if that stop was safe for a white female. I don't want to be harassed or mugged. I'm definitely going to try this out tomorrow morning and tomorrow after work to see how long it takes.
@ahill I don't feel that Homan and Roosevelt is safe at all. Especially because the Roosevelt bus takes forever and again, I want to be smart about my safety. The neighborhood right there is super shady.

Taking the homan bus I think to the green line is my best option. I live 3 doors down from Homan and it will save me the walk to North Ave every morning. Plus the Homan buses run sooooo often. If this route, doesn't take off much time, which I do believe it will. I will try the North Bus to the Red Line. I'm just not a fan of the trains that go underground. Nor am I a fan of being packed in like a sardine. I get wayyyyyy too claustrophobic.

  • You're way better off taking the El than that North Ave. bus to the red line in my opinion. North avenue crawls like a snail getting through Bucktown and into Lincoln Park....especially during rush hour.

The entire first floor is dug up and unusable. The repair work started for about a year ago but came to a halt as Hispanic Housing Development Corporation run out of money. The open floor causes problems for the elderly and disabled residents as necessary services cannot be provided.

The finances for the 65th Infantry Boringueneers veterans housing project will be a welcome source for the Hispanic housing Development Corporation and for all its residents.

WHERE DID THEY COME UP WITH THIS INFORMATION?!? I went back and read both threads again and found no statement of "good riddance" in “Riot Fest to Leave Humboldt Park?”! All the other comments were about CONCERN alright! CONCERN about the fest leaving and how they want it to stay. ONLY ONE PERSON had a negative comment and that person comments that change for the good in HP is bad?!? In the thread “Riot Fest Needs Our Help,”. Where did do get "drawing a mix of 34 comments but fell short of a definitive answer."! Not one comment was negative about RF and most supported it. Neighbors wrote about having meetings with the Alderman, Park District and RF promoters to get them to commit to HP! A very definitive answer of "HP neighbors want RF to stay in a huge way" to me!!!
DNAinfo. did you think the citizens of HP would let you down play this most important event in their neighborhood? I will be waiting to read your retraction and/or apologies to your readers in the HP community. Have a nice day.

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

Smith Parker, that's my point, but that is not how the DNAinfo.'s story reported it. I think that reporter needs to go back to reporter school and learn about misleading readers, interpreting facts and not to add what they believe to a story! EPIC FAIL!!!

  • At least they reached out and got an official statement as opposed to playing guessing games. Might you be over reacting just a tad? Personally, I like the DNAinfo/Everyblock feedback loop and think we should encourage hyper local reporting.

looking for an Apartment

Hi
I have a friend who is looking for an apartment for her and her daughter. She is trying to find a 2 bedroom for $800 I know sounds unrealistic but humor me anyway. Thanks:)

  • Hi ! I'm a Licensed Real Estate Broker that lives in Logan Square. I'ld be glad to assist with possible apartment searches in the area of your choice. Thanks - Bernie . . . 773.354.1066 . . . countrybernie@earthlink.net

  • Jen Baron JBaron

I advise you have them look in Old Irving Park. They may get lucky and find a good apartment close to that price. I'd advise they drive the area, specifically in the coordinates of Irving Park north to Montrose, and Pulaski west to Keeler. Keystone ave, Kedvale, and Keeler have a lot of apartment buildings and or older condos that put up for rent signs, as well as Cullom ave and Berteau. Good luck!

Honda Fit Tires Stolen on Belden

Hello All, just a warning... I had ALL of my tires and rims stolen off of my Honda Fit early Sunday morning. It had to have happened after 1am. It happened near 2828 W Belden. I didn't have locking nuts but from what I have been reading it doesn't sound like they would have helped. Keep an eye on your cars folks! I cannot believe this happened 2 block away from the police department. They're doing a great job of patrolling the neighborhood... Not! I am super paranoid that this will happen again. Has this happened to anyone and were you targeted multiple times?

  • Living in the city it would be something to consider when buying a new car... My dad had a car that was known to be targeted for stealing radios. The third time his radio got stolen he gave up. I second the blinking light thing. It sounds silly but it seems to have stopped break ins on my car (one window and one catalytic converter)

  • Sorry that happened to you! The dealer warned me about this when I bought my Fit. The cars are easy targets because they're so light. I park in a garage, so I haven't bothered with the wheel locks yet, but I will probably get them the next time I bring my car in for maintenance.

Grab-A-Bite

Whatever it is, it's coming to the Western Blue Line. Obviously they have coffee and snacks of some variety. Other than that, all I can gather is that they have sandwiches. It's a London-based company and so far has very little web presence in the U.S. Their UK website really doesn't have much info, either.

I have so many convenience-food related questions!

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

Grab-A-Bite is going INSIDE the Western station, in the thing where the little Dunkin Donuts used to be. No idea when it's opening or how/what the food is.

As for rents - probably very high and wrapped in city red tape. Though when the guy who had the franchise for the Dunkin closed it to try and operate as an independent, he was selling those cellophane-wrapped pastries that were really not very appetizing, so I can understand what he didn't make enough to pay the rent.

  • My dream of a mini Bang Bang in that spot has come to an end. Found a bit more info here on the London company and CTA rental pricing: http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/7/71/148291/london-based-sandwich-shops-coming-to-4-cta-stations

Where can I get some decent asopao?

Went to Bruquena at 12:30 today and they were closed (waiter had not arrived yet). What kind of excuse is that? Then went across the street to Latin American. Ordered Asopao de Pollo con arroz and Asopao de Salchicon con fideos. It was basically water, no real sazon. Hubby's asopao de pollo had one measly piece of chicken and there was not enough salchichon in mine. Came away so disappointed. So where can I get a decent asopao?

First of all, I am not a speeder but I've never seen a car slow down to 20mph on Western unless there is heavy traffic. If you don't maintain the flow of traffic you're liable to cause traffic problems (not to mention the road rage you'd incite).

Second, does anyone know the law? Does "when children are present" mean when they're in sight, or does it generally mean when children are in the area i.e. in the school building?

Either way, seems to me these cameras are just slapping drivers with fines without having any positive impact on behavior.

If a ticker writer has a habit of writing false tickets they should be fired. If they perjured, themselves in any way, they should face stiffer charges.

    Glad,u got off.

You can get a copy of the voice transcript from Administrative hearings. Get a cd of the judge saying there was no pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Citizens need to be aggressive in going after the villains. Whe they are employees of the city or their vendors we really have to shed the light of day ob this.

I got a ticket where the photo was doctored. I need to do the same as you and go after the person who wrote the ticket or doctored the photo. Wonder if there is some kind of bonus given to those who write alot of tickets.

Dogs should not be kept outside in this weather!!

I'm calling you out, whoever you are, on the 1300 Block of Ridgeway who keep their two german shepherd type dogs outside all the time.... in this weather, shame on you! What kind of people are you? Let them lay in the entry way if you feel they should't be in the living quarters of your home. You do not deserve to have them!

  • HPPie Born in HP

Key point - as long as they have access to shelter and food. Do you think anyone would make such a fuss if they had a heated doggie condo? The fact is there are lots of idiots in this city who abuse animals. Thankfully there are good samaritans who try to save them. I dont think 911 is the correct path, thats why we have other outlets to handle these situations. (Which they did).

  • yeah so the great pyr post? your dog isnt weird, that's its breed. winter weather is their weather. and yes, brutal chicago winter weather. but, then people freak out and would call cops on you. i have a newf and he is an indoor pet through and through but he...

(btw, lots of dogs love winter, mixes and different breeds). I get it, there are days that dogs should be inside, but, keep in mind, some dogs stay outside, some people have guard dogs, and some actually love it.

What do YOU pay for Comcast???

I've had it with Comcast, just like so many others... In less than a year, my internet fee went from $77 (which I thought was absurdly high!), to $83, to $95 this month!!! My co-worker told me yesterday she pays $30, and every time that "promotional" rate expires, she complains and they give it back to her... So, I'm thinking that's some pretty significant range! So, what do YOU pay??? I'm wonder just how wide this range is...

  • I am the furthest thing from being an electronic geek but I do try to keep up with the times since I have an 8 year old son. He keeps me enlightened with the latest technology. As long as I can view my shows I am ecstatic!!!!! Keep sporting on~!!!!

  • I pay $130, $95 sounds real nice.

3100 Block of Belden and Lyndale

Hello -
I am interested in connecting with neighbors in this area to become more cooperative. It's been really difficult the last 3 years to drive down the alley, because people don't clean their area and many that do, place all of the snow in the middle of the alley. Would love to form an understanding so our entire alley is clean, like other cooperative blocks. Would also like to connect for more block parties and community-based partnerships.

  • Sigh but there are condos there as well it really makes me angry because people are so inconsiderate

  • Hi Aimee. As one who lives in the 3100 block of Lyndale, I've got to agree. It's tough. During that storm a few weeks back, I worked with quite a few neighbors to clear the way behind the buildings. We do actually have done decent neighbors

Hi Aimee. As one who lives in the 3100 block of Lyndale, I've got to agree. It's tough. During that storm a few weeks back, I worked with quite a few neighbors to clear the way behind the buildings. We do actually have done decent neighbors

There was an incident where a building owner along Kedzie between our two streets had hired a plow company to clear their parking area. The truck left a 4' talk pile in the middle of the alley. I along with several other fuming neighbors, contacted residents of the building to have the owner rectify the situation. Within a few hours the plow was back and cleared the way.

There are quite a few renters in the area, but there are also some owners too. Two of the buildings at intersection of the alley in question are owner occupied. One on Lyndale at the corner and the one with the lovely garden out back.

I'd potentially be interested in something centered around it little area.

West Humboldt Safety

Hi all!!!

I was hoping some of you guys can help me out here -

I am considering a move to the area west of Humboldt Park. I have my eye on a place a couple of blocks South of Cemitas Pueblas (Le Moyne and N Central Park ish)

I'm a single male in my mid 20s, moving from the West Loop.

I've been told the area West of the park can get a little dangerous - what do you guys think? Is the neighborhood on the up and up or on the decline?

Thank you!!!

  • everyblockhp Looking to make hp a better place for everyone !

    Great post Tanja !

Please pay particular attention to the last paragraph. The addressing part has me baffled since I know of no statements from Chuy about this subject.

This election is about the fiscal health of Chicago and NOTHING else. If we can't pay our bills and get the spending under control there will be problems that can't be fixed by talking about neighborhoods and school closings. This is a job for someone who can work with a budget the size of Chicago's. Rahm has shown he can do this task. Say what you want about his personality, his friends or how he dresses or whatever. The facts remain that this about budget and how to control one.

Doubtful the websites author has rights to it.
That should tell you something about the personality behind it alone.
Thats as far as I go though. My job is to protect sites, not attack them.

  • thinking about it more, I dont know how an anonymous site can get permission to use an image. Copyright requires being able to verify source.
Looks like this guy claiming Rahm is stealing credit for things is stealing credit himself

UPDATE.....I went to the Humboldt Park Advisory Council meeting Thursday night at 6:30 P.M., Max Wagner a RF coordinator stated "Mike who runs RF has NOT decided if RF will be held in HP"!!!!! From what I understood, RF is being made to jump through hoops to have the fest in HP. I listened as the HPAC President "Amy Vega" told Max that she had sent FOIA requests on funds RF paid to the park district for repairs from last years flood during RF. Another member complained that Sacramento was closed one day prior. There was talk of the food trailers in HP going after RF for lost income because setting up days before RF. Max remarked that Sacramento was only closed for an hour that day, the food trailers have a contract with the park district and have given three options on setting up during RF. This RF did not have to do but reached out to the food trailers to help any way RF could! Max went on that the drains in the park were filled with GREASE, gravel and dirt which contributed to the flooding last year. Amy remarked that clogged drains have been a problem going back as far as 2008 in other locations in the park. Max pointed out clearly that RF has to follow Park District rules and complaints about thous rules being followed belong to the Park District and should be made to them and not placed onto RF.
I do not understand why a fest that does so much good "the list is to long to write here" for HP is being questioned on such minor matters? Shootings and gang activity do not spike during this fest! Why are they getting such a hard time making HP a great place to live by the powers in City Hall? Now is the time citizens of HP! If you love RF, write and call your Alderman, The Mayor and attend Humboldt Park Advisory Council meetings and make your voice be heard! RF needs us to show our overwhelming support.

Do foias. Send in the complaints, with photos,or other evidence. If nothing happens send it to the regulatoru bodies and top city lawyer and get them involved. U definitely will get a resolution from the mayor, commissioner, regulatory body.

I used to be stupid and keep ordering from a ward super and 311 for, years. I Don't waste my time doing that anymore. I go to the,top dogs responsible and tell them to hold their feet on the ground responsible. When they won't I report it to a regulatory body.

Now we need real leaders to push our agenda.... making HP safer, cleaner, more enticing for job growth, more enticing for tourism (Paseo Boricua), assistance for struggling homeowners, maybe a good elementary school or two?

Throwing it out there because all the back and forth debates and rebutles were entertaining, but that did not offer a solution, that was blowing off steam.

I don't have a lot of time to commit to this but I'd like to join efforts of those that are on the same page.

Thanks

Musketeer, I agree with you. Maldonado was clear when he told the audience that he does not want to work together with all people in the 26th Ward. We have to start interst groups and develop strenght by connecting these groups. When problems comes up we should be able to react quickly and with power.

  • Smith Park Advisory Council, (SPAC) smithparkadvisorycouncil.org

Everyone must get involved in some fashion. There are many great community, parks, and civic organizations to get involved with. In our opinion, to make a community safe, one has to get involved in the Community Policing, (CAPS) know your beat and know your neighbors. In addition, if your school is not performing well, get involved in the Local School Council, (LSC). If one feels their parks are not safe, get involved with the park advisory council. Their is so much one can contribute to a community.

Aldi Development Presentation

The Bucktown Community Organization is hosting a meeting this week hearing proposals on zoning changes for 2339-59 North Seeley & 2332-34 North Elston in Bucktown.
And a presentation of the ALDI project.

Thought those of us in Logan Square who shop there, or are interested in development, might like to attend. I'm assuming the meeting is open to those who would like to hear about the ALDI project. Wed. 7-8pm. Bucktown Library.

First Ward: Moreno / Run off or not?

He got over 50% but doesn't he need 51%? Anne Shaw had not conceded as of the last report I saw. Anyone have any more info?

In the meantime, Moreno (or the next alderman) can control development in the first ward, because it's his job to guess whether the ward would be better or worse off if he accepted a proposal for a new business. Chicago governance is a funky system, no doubt.

Don't hate the player, hate the game - or, at least, if you dislike the alderman obstructing business, don't complain when Moreno green lights a pawn shop.

Follow The Groundhog’s Example: Stay Indoors

Every year, in February, we wait to see if Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog, will predict six more weeks of winter. Huge crowds have waited for Phil’s prediction each year since 1886. For Phil, seeing his shadow predicts six more weeks of winter-like weather. More often than not, he sees his shadow and goes back inside.

Licensed Healing Practitioner Wanted

Hi There! We are 3 mental health professionals looking for a 4th office mate to join our space…could that somebody be you? We are looking for a licensed healing practitioner (therapist, acupuncturist, masseuse) who is as energetic, flexible, good-humored, passionate and dedicated to the Logan Square/Humboldt Park communities as we are. Two art therapists and one social worker, as well as a greyhound named B, make up our practice. We are currently seeking out new spaces to work on, but are committed to staying in this community and keeping rent as low as possible. If you think you would like to join us, feel free to contact me at michelle@createcounselingcenter.com. Have an amazing day!

  • Just a quick note...I believe this meets the guidelines of EB. If not, please let me know and I will remove it! Thanks!

  • Just offering a quick note... We prefer massage therapist. I know it's just a word...but in some circles it has a very different definition. ;)

  • Thank you for the correction! I thought masseuse sounded odd :)
