Pediatric dentist recommendation

I need recommendations for pediatric dentists, please!

  • I recommend Dr. Caroline Scholtz at 5530 West Montrose. She accepts our BCBS as in network. http://www.carolinescholtzdds.com

We used to go to Brushin on Belmont which I would highly recommend too, but we moved West and it was a bit too far.

  • Carrie K Chicago Public School Teacher

Not sure if they do pediatric but betting they do. Lynch Dental - Family dentists two sisters and a brother. I love them. They have offices downtown in Pittsfield building and in Forest Park. The Forest Park location is open Saturdays.

Stolen bike: it's gone :(

I saw the kid do it too. Bike is a women's vintage 52 cm Univega. Black frame with all original parts and red decals. Red rear tire, red pedals, red grip tape, and pink brake cables. The kid took it from California and Milwaukee on wed night around 10:15pm. Younger black male with a stupid mustache - he even rode away with my white BMX helmet that has the word 'Albes' on the front. I ran after him, and was literally about six inches from him but he got away. Police report filed but that is worthless.

  • I know it's not your bike, but I think your helmet may be hanging on a fence around 2530 N Sawyer. It's a white helmet and I saw "Alb" but couldn't see the rest. I hope you find your bike!

  • I saw the same helmet this morning that Alyson did.

Roosters in the City

One of our neighbors keeps hens and at least one rooster in their yard. I believe it is within city ordinance to keep chickens (hens), but does the city ordinance speak to keeping roosters? This bird has been crowing since 4:30 this morning!

  • Nick South Logan / North Humboldt

I have not taken any action yet, but now that I have read a number of articles that bolster the legality of roosters in the city I will likely talk with our neighbor before involving 311 or the Alderman's office.

Just curious MD, where does one draw the line on not being a snitch? Is it ok to call the police if you witness gang members congregating and drinking on the public right of way. What if someone is trespassing on private property? What if they are in the act of vandalizing that property? How about if you witness someone dealing drugs on your street? It is the police departments job to protect and serve. This includes quality of life issues as well as criminal ones. While I agree that some calls are more important than others I will leave it to the professionals to make that decision.

  • ptpreserves local business owner in Humboldt park

As someone with hens, i would say talk to them first for sure. They will most likely not want to be a nuisance to their neighbors. Just give them a few weeks for rehoming, if thats the way it ends up. Its hard to find someone to take a rooster...

Alex Cleaner's is going out of business!

I'm sorry to see this place go. Make sure to pick up any belongings from them before August 10th!

Can anyone recommend a different cleaners in the area?

Thanks!

  • I know it wasn't a case of rent increase - the owners decided to leave the business and sell.

  • The population in a gentrifying neighborhood is likely to consume MORE dry cleaning services than a poorer neighborhood, so "the evils of gentrification" charge doesn't seem logical in this case. Personally, I am not a big supporter of the chemicals industry and businesses that use tetrachloroethylene to clean clothes, then cover everything with plastic that is not recycled.

I live right in front of the park on Kedzie and Division. For the two years the festival has been going on they have given tickets to the residents who live in the surrounding area of the park. So those who live From Division to Augusta, Augusta to Sacramento, and Sacramento to Division. I am not sure if they gave tickets to the residents in the area where they added a stage last year, further south on Sacramento.

In 2012 I was able to get a ticket for everyone in my household (they will ask to see your ID as proof of address) and per day but you could only get the ticket on the day of. Last year they only gave two tickets per ID per day and they were sold out on the last day so we were not able to attend on that Sunday.

I am not sure if they are going to do the same this year, but it if you live the area I mentioned above, it doesn't hurt to send them and email or tweet to ask if they will do the same this year. Or take your chances of not buying your tickets and asking at the Will Call Window they set up on the Division and Kedzie if they are giving out tickets again. Good luck.

  • I just moved to the north side of the park and sent them an email to see if they're offering anything to residents this year. I'll update when/if I get a reply!

Tech Help: WiFi Range Extender

I need help installing a WiFi range extender for my home network. Thanks!

  • Is this the kind that uses your electrical wiring to essentially make a wired connection to another part of the house? Like the TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT. That's what I've used, with a 2nd router on the other end. Works great.

  • My brother-in-law is a tech consultant who works with small businesses and could definitely help you out. He's great, is also in Logan Square, and has my house all wired! If you're interested, I'd be happy to pass along his information.

  • Liam R Independent IT Consultant

I'm Kelly's brother-in-law and happy to help. If running a wire is an option, that will be the preferable solution due to speed and reliability, but there are plenty of good wifi-repeaters out there. The most economical solution will depend on what kind of router you currently have and what speeds you require.

Feel free to call if you would like more help. (224)325-5426

St. Sylvester's Preschool

My daughter will be starting pre-k/preschool at St. Sylvester's next month. She's an early September birthday, so we expect she'll be in the youngest classroom (they divide by age as I understand it). I'm wondering if there are any other parents of new students at St. Sylvester's here who might like to meet up at Palmer Square for a play date one weekend before the start of the school year.
I'm also interested in hearing about experiences with the school that others would like to share. Thank you!

  • Hilarie. We are not going tomorrow to book day as we have a wedding. We will be there Saturday. I am free all day Saturday afterward and would love to meet up. Jill, I would love to meet up also. Jill and Hilarie just let me know what time to meet and we will be there..... Looking forward to meeting you both....

  • I can meet after nap tomorrow, maybe around 3 or so?

I have an apartment open, but if it is vacant in November, then it will stay vacant until Spring, so unless they want to spend extra $s I just can't afford to house them.

History of this old Gas Station?

I was having a debate with some friends over what this building at the corner of California and Altgeld once was.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it was a gas station, but is there anyone who's been in the neighborhood awhile who could add any further details?

Thanks so much.

P.S. I heard they were going to put a Trader Joe's in that building, but then the local slumlord jacked up the rent because someone stapled a flyer to a tree trying to give away a dog that they CLEARLY DON'T DESERVE TO OWN, because the dog was scared by a loud noise last night--was that gunshots or fireworks?

At least that's what I heard.

Thanks!

FOUND CAT: All black male? very friendly found around Sawyer & Milwaukee

Hello neighbors--
My roommate and I found a cat stuck on our window sill last night, and helped him down so that he might go home. However, he's showed up on our window sill again this morning, so I'm thinking he's lost.

I am assuming it's a male since it's a pretty big cat (maybe 16 pounds?) and he seems to be all black with no markings, and light green eyes.

I'm planning on keeping him at our apartment until this afternoon when I can take him to Harmony House on Elston.

I hope this helps to find his owner! Let me know if you are looking for him!

construction at Lafayette school

Hi all!
Has anyone else been disturbed by the construction noise at Lafayette school (2714 W Augusta) lately? They've been starting in the 6:00am hour, well before the city ordinance allows. I've called police to complain several times and went to Alderman Maldonado's office last week to file a complaint, but it started this morning again at about 6:15am. Wondering if others are noticing this too...

I feel your pain. I called the police on about 10 different occasions, but no one ever showed. I made an earlier post (see my post above from July 2nd) saying that I have a reporter from the Reader who is doing a piece on this, as well as Alderman Maldonado's total lack of response to this and other neighborhood issues. If you'd like to speak with the reporter please click on my profile and send me an email with your contact info and I will be glad to pass this along. Unfortunately this seems to be our only means for getting anything done, since cops won't show up and the Alderman has made it clear that he will not take any action. I've contacted Maldonado's office several times about this, and my messages have gone unreturned and I have been hung up on. I'm very happy that they're working on the school, but waking up residents for months at 5 or 6am is really unacceptable.

Sonia, yes! Smith Park is part of the central district which incorporates, Humboldt Park, Wicker Park, Commercial Park, Ecker Park, and I believe Pulaski Park. The parks mentioned above all have Advisory Council's. Every park raises their own money for their specific programs which are not all the same for each park. However, as president of Smith Park, Smith Park does not compete with the other parks, we support one another, share ideas and develop partnerships. I will say, garbage pickup is a major issue and some of our baseball diamonds. Sometimes we have the same issue as other parks, but since garbage pickup is contracted to an outside source, the best way to handle this issue is to email the complaint to the Chicago Park District Superintendent. Cc: your park supervisor and your advisory council president, this way downtown can revisit renewing the garbage vendors contract. Again, Cynthia is doing the best she can with the tools she has available to her. If anyone would like to receive any additional information, please feel free to contact me through this chain or visit our web at smithparkadvisorycouncil.org

Hey everyone. As I have read all of your thought provoking comments I thought it might make sense to share our learning with one another. I believe we all conduct meetings at the same time and we should either stagger our meeting so other advisory council members can sit in on each others meetings or we should have a separate meeting where each council can come together to discuss success stories, city issues and other matters. Let me know if there is an interest and I can take the lead on setting something up for everyone.

Below is information pertaining to our fundraiser. I also have posted the event on the Everyblock timeline. You can perform a search under "Mary Martelme Park" in the West Loop. It would be great if you all would support our annual fundraiser in August. We should all support each other's efforts if we can. You can count on me to support your fundraising efforts if I am informed of the event.

Come support the Mary Bartelme Park and your local West Loop business community. We have a stage with two bands, a 30' rock climbing wall beer from Haymarket Brewery and another beer truck. General admission $25 or $20 if tickets are purchased in advanced.

Hello Everyblock! My husband and I found a very sweet dog tonight named Jackie in the alley, tied to a fence post, behind Tony's. A neighborhood kid said they'd seen her there since about 1 pm, and we found her around 8:30 pm. She has up to date rabies tags and a Home Again tag. She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

She is probably about 30 lbs, very strong but sweet. She responds to her name, and knows commands like sit and stay. She loves chicken, but what dog doesn't.

If anyone knows Jackie's owners, please respond! We have called Home Again and they have called her owners, but they did not pick up so we're not sure what's going to happen tonight. We're letting her stay with us overnight but if you know where Jackie lives we would love nothing more than to reunite her with her owners.

Thank you so much for doing all of this. If my dog had gotten lost, I would be so lucky to have someone like you be the one to find her and care for her in the interim. So wonderful and heartwarming to know there are people like you out there who are willing to help.

Gunshots this morning (Spaulding/Dickens area)?

Was wondering if anyone else heard gunshots early this morning? My husband and I were woken up this morning by them and could hear them from our alley for over the course of at least 15 minutes. I was so half asleep that I don't know what time it was, I just know that shortly after, the sun began to rise. Also, I know it's been mentioned many times on here, but what is the proper number to call to report something like this. Is it 911? Thanks!

Any bright ideas about how to complain about city subcontractors?

There are subcontractors who are doing city work on my block and have consistently screwed things up. Broke my front walkway last week, and today got a piece of heavy machinery stuck on the new covers to the new plumbing that they did on our block, plainly damaging them in the bargain. The phone number on the side of their truck is for a non-working number (Sumit Construction in Skokie -- there are 4 Sumit Constructions in Chicago) and the workers are completely surly. I've called 311 as has my neighbor, but is there anything more we can do to try to get the city to pay attention to this?

  • If it is Watermain work, which again I'm guessing it is (I use to work at Dept of Water and Sumit Construction is one of the main subcontractors that did this work), you should email Thomas Powers. Tom Powers is the head of the Dept of Water, whenever he got a complaint via email from a citizen or the Alderman office, he would send it to me and we would have the damage taken care of right away and would notify the sub. You can contact him at tpowers@cityofchicago.org

One of the commenters said it seemed like there were a number of alternative coffee places, but the only one which makes sense for my commute - I'm coming from behind the police station - was Township, and I do not care for their coffee (or their service for said coffee, but that's another show).

I started to wonder if there were any possibility that the to-be-rehabbed Cozy Corner would offer a coffee window. While I initially doubted it would make much sense on the alley side of the business, next to the NB exit - that alley can get pretty ripe - I knew I'd go if they offered it. And then today, I saw new windows on the alley side, and some sort of indented part of the outer wall. DARE I DRREAM, NEIGHBORS? Anybody know anybody who may know if that's even a possibility?

I take a similar route to the California stop and have wanted some options too. Sometimes I trek around the corner to Cafe Mustache if I have enough time. If I'm really early I'll go over to Gaslight. Yum.

The times I've been to Cozy Corner in the past, people are always coming in for a to-go cup of coffee. The layout was pretty tight in there, though, so I could see some people not wanting to hassle with it. Perhaps with the expanded space and new layout there will be ample opportunity to stop in for coffee, even if it's not an outside window. The new openings installed on the alley side of the addition are definitely only for natural light/trash exit unfortunately.

I believe Cozy Corner has always offered coffee service @ the counter for to-go cups. Can anyone confirm this? No need for a window if they keep this up after reopening.

  • I currently live in this area... So exciting!!!

  • I live right near there, too, and have been watching this building transform over the last several months. It's looking great. Can't say I'm big on the idea of increasing housing density there, but it doesn't look like the building could house a huge number of units, and it will be great to have some new business activity on that stretch. "A restaurant, a furniture store, a brewery, an antique store" sounds like a pretty decent start!

Hopefully more people on foot will also get CDOT to address the walkability factor of the intersection, it is not very pedestrian-friendly, speaking as someone who has walked my kid to Unity Park for many years coming from the NE.

I am optimistic about the impact of the Woodard Plaza as well. I just hope the Gap Outlet sticks around, it's been a staple for me since the early 90s.

Where are the Free Book boxes?

I enjoy the free book boxes in Chicago. However, I only know of 2 of them. There is one in Logan Square, in front of the late Johnny's Grill, and it's accompanied by a free video box. There is another one in West Town / Ukrainian Village, in front of West Town Bakery. Where can I find other ones?

I enjoy the free book boxes in Chicago. However, I only know of 2 of them. There is one in Logan Square, in front of the late Johnny's Grill, and it's accompanied by a free video box. There is another one in West Town / Ukrainian Village, in front of West Town Bakery. Where can I find other ones?

As a side note, I went to take a look at the LS one last weekend; there was someone else there hauling away a huge stack of at least 8 books. The only stuff left was garbage. It's just an open box, so I realize there aren't any rules. I wasn't going to hassle the guy or make assumptions about his needs. But please be courteous, leave some for your neighbors, and contribute to the box if you can.

  • Katie McDevitt Logan Square Lady

There is also a book box in front of a house next to the church off the north side of the Boulevard: ~ 2625 Talman near Schubert?

  • Jerry Cargill Photographer, Teacher, Live on Milwaukee Ave.

I've put a lot of good books in the LS box near Lula's. I always hope they'll go to someone who appreciates them and not a hoarder. If people return them after they're done, there will always be some in there.

Funston Elementary

I just found out my child will be attending Funston Elementary this year. Does anyone know about this school or have an opinion good or bad? It is not anywhere near our home so we are debating whether or not to call CPS about this?

  • Is this for K? According to CPS, there are still spots available at a few elementary schools: http://cpsoae.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=173111&type=d

On that list, I'd investigate McPherson.

  • Every Kate new mom, park walker

I'd give Brentano a call and try to get in for a tour (773.534.4100). We're starting our son there in the fall and I've spent a lot of time at the school. The teachers are warm, caring and smart; the school is orderly; and the principal is great. We're excited to have this great neighborhood school in our hood.

Nanny Share/Child Care Provider

I am seeking in home child care for my 10 month old niece. Our needs are 30ish hours per week with a budget of $200/week. Anyone have a nanny share opening or any thoughts? I know it's a tall order.

  • I see, then that seems more reasonable.

  • Even with a nanny share, this is pretty poor income. You can find nannies that cheap, but you're going to get what you pay for. Also, Joannainuptown - that's the going rate for a decently experienced nanny of one child, not two or more.

Even with a nanny share, this is pretty poor income. You can find nannies that cheap, but you're going to get what you pay for. Also, Joannainuptown - that's the going rate for a decently experienced nanny of one child, not two or more.

Many parents don't understand that a nanny is not a "full time babysitter" - a nanny (that you're not paying 7 dollars an hour) is going to be someone who assists you in raising your family and keeping your house in order whether it's helping clean the house or run the occasional errand, etc.

The fact that some people are willing to entrust the upbringing of their children to the lowest bidder is mind boggling to me.

$200/week is a rather low budget even for someone willing to do a nanny share. If the currently-paying family is even allowing / comfortable with their nanny entering a share, they may well want some sort of a discount or even a matched rate - dropping this poor nanny to something like ~13/hr for watching two kids (this is well below the going rate for anyone with experience).

Then of course there is the term "30ish", but on a fixed budget. This is a red flag for any prospective nanny. When it's 38 hours, does the family still only have $200 to spend? This may not be OP - but many parents who sound like OP can't / won't / don't pay more...

I don't mean to disparage OP - her available budget is what it is and that can't be helped - it's hard getting by especially in this city. I just think this is a taller order than most people realize.

Parents who have sent their children to St. John Berchmans

Are there (non-Catholic) parents out there that have sent their children to St. John Berchmans and have had a good experience?

  • Curious about this too ...

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

If you are looking for an alternative to CPS, look into http://www.npeschool.org/

  • SJB has many families that are not Catholic enrolled. It is a great community with amazing teachers. Our son has excelled since his arrival three years ago. While we appreciate the Catholic foundation and mission, it enables SJB to offer a well rounded, diverse and safe school for our kids in the neighborhood.

Bullet holes through 3rd story window @ Mozart and North.

Late last night we noticed two bullet holes height the cubed glass on the side of our building - 3rd story. Thankfully only the outside of the cube was punctured, but I think I would've noticed his before. Did anyone hear gunshots over the weekend or on Monday around Mozart and North? Thanks!

  • Martin 1600 n blk of francisco

I thought I heard gun shots around 1-2am on Monday. My wife were awake and we heard about 4-5 gunshots. I looked out the window and saw nothing and I didn't hear police sirens afterwards. It has been a couple of years since we heard gunshots on the block. 11 years ago it was common around the Burger King especially on the summer weekends.

  • MWoolley Connecticut Casual Chicagoian

    Thanks Martin.

  • Shane Brewer, sometimes biker, mandolin picker.

If people hear gunshots and don't call the police, then it's likely the police won't come.

Coach house is legal?

Is it legal to build a coach house on top of your garage, and use it for rental income? Do you know where to find the City of Chicago laws pertaining to this type of structure? We see several of them in the neighborhood, but were not sure about attempting this ourseleves. We can definitely use the extra income!!

  • New ones were banned in 1957, the ones you still see are grandfathered in. It's too bad, coach houses are much more appealing than basement apartments.

  • AnnaWilson Anna

Yeah, I went through the hassle of talking to several contractors and went to the building permit office and was told NOPE! If a coach house exists then it's OK but we're not allowed to build a new one, even if you knock down your detached garage and replace it with a coach house. Lame.

  • Even if new coach houses weren't explicitly banned, you probably would not be able to due to zoning restriction regarding number of units on the lot and total finished sq footage.
