4. As for myself I have contacted the Alderman and I will protest all the way to city hall if I have too. This type of festival belongs in Northerly Island away from neighborhoods where small children go to bed at 8pm and there is plenty of parking.

  • and of course the Alderman has influence in Riotfest. all city depts interact (or they are supposed to).

  • I'll check the grass repairs for your Square Peg. I'll send you a report. I'm pretty sure it will come up just fine with the $150 grand or whatever it is they're spending on getting it back in shape.

I wonder if PR festival caused this much in damage we would be so understanding and welcoming?

  • I think PR fest does quite a bit of damage...with the carnival and all...but it seems they just wait for the grass to grow back, rather than charge the organizers every year to fix it.

Generators in Humboldt Park

Is it time for a change? I was enjoying a leisurely peaceful walk home through the park on a sunny Saturday afternoon which was interrupted by the noisy generator used to power one of the food trucks.

They're noisy and ugly and seem to be out of place in a park that is supposed to be a haven of nature from the concrete jungle we live in.

  • LD

Seriously is THIS what we're complaining about - in Humbolt Park?

To the posters who think that they're on the outskirts therefore not really a nuisance I simply just say they're along walking and jogging paths where everyone walks by.

In my "humboldt" opinion the generators are an eye sore and a noise pollutant as well as a regular pollutant i'm sure.

And yes LD it's the little things and details that set the tone for the bigger things. it's the "broken window" theory.

I wonder how many people would welcome these generators up on the new pristine 606 trail?

Dog Found @ Fairfield & Cortland

We found this little cutie this morning. Trying to track down his owners as he has no collar or microchip. He's a really big sweetheart and is staying with us until we find his owner or another solution. We will definitely NOT be taking him to the city shelter, so any help is greatly appreciated.

  • I'm not sure, but the owner may live on Washtenaw. I would estimate 1810 Washtenaw (a newer house next to an older house). They have two dogs, one that looks like this guy. I'm not absolutely sure, but if you're in the area it might be worth giving it a try.

  • best wishes in finding the owners

Neighbors out of control. What to do?

The situation with my neighbors has gone from bad to worse in the last few months. They used to just be annoying and inconsiderate, but since this woman's kids were taken away and her husband went to jail, it's become the sketch-town square. Random people coming and going at all hours, gang fights between her place and the house next door in front of my house, more dogs in the yard by the day (or running loose in the street), more trash thrown in my yard, people yelling and screaming at each other endlessly. What can I do?!? We call the cops when something clearly illegal happens but it's rarely clearly illegal. They are basically squatting this house. It's owned by a complete slum lord who doesn't give a care what happens and is just holding on to the place till he can sell it for a huge profit. But it's the very people in the houses go are keeping the property values low.

I know I sound like a whiny white person and I'm sort of annoying myself. And really when it was just irritating I could deal. But it's at the point where it's getting dangerous and I'm hesitant to even go outside for a walk at night.

Suggestions other than "call 911" and call your alderman" welcome. We do call 911 and the alderman isn't going to do anything.

  • meanboss I own a circus.

    Thank you!!!

  • I once had the landlord of the building next door give me his phone number, in case there were any troubles. Well, I called him every time his tenants were doing something illegal(sometimes at late hours) and he sold within a year.

I personally think it would have been easier to evict the gangbangers and run a good building, but ???

Great suggestions on this thread. Keep calling. Keep records. Go to CAPS. It won't be fast, but it will work. Good Luck!

Could you provide some more info? What is it's name? Gender? Did you lose him/her around the time of this post (3:30pm, Thursday)? And, from where -- address or closest intersection? Tags or collar?

    Best of luck.

  • The first posting I saw this for this lovely pup was on Reddit on Tuesday---there are some more details there (including many of your questions), but I think it was posted by a friend of deja123 rather than by herself directly. As such, I post this link in hopes of helping a reunion happen quickly, but can't offer any insight into the veracity of the details found there.

For the past month we've been collecting some additional contributions for the store opening. We're just a two-person operation so we don't have any huge investors behind us and every little donation helps.

There's about 48 hours left to donate if anyone is interested in supporting us :)

this city can make you wait forever for inspections. I know of at least two groups in the city that have attempted to open commercial daycares into different neighborhoods and actually after 6 months of paying all the bills and signing on clients with promises and never being able to open due to delays with the city even though they had passed all state licensing required ended up completely broke and having to refund and disappoint all of their prospective clients.

my primary point here is that just because a commercial daycare takes some time to open don't necessarily take that as a bad sign. If you're interested in the place or like the location it would still be worth your time to interview

Childish Pursuit you are correct. That's awesome you have so much knowledge about the day care business. Child care is a very difficult business to open because we deal with children. We needed to remodel the place so everything was up to date with all the new technology and equipment that the City and State asked for. Day Care Iicense is a very slow and delicate process in order to make the facility a safe environment for children, families, and teachers to attend. The City and State tried their best to move the process along but they had to deal with the staff shortage on both their end. Other than the waiting game, there was nothing that was wrong with the facility or our paperwork. I think that is a very good question and I'm glad you asked.

Thank you so much for your interest with Willow Tree Child Care and you can call the center at (773) 360-7816 for any further questions.

After being in our location for 2 years, we've suddenly had mail returned to a couple of different senders with notices like, "address unknown," or they'll say they attempted 3 times, even though there was no notice and I was home each of the dates listed on the "attempt form." I have verified that the address was correct on the letters/packages that were returned. We still continue to get all our junk mail and ComEd bills as well as other peoples' mail, but now we're missing stuff. Any suggestions or input would be much appreciated!

Also, I found out from a talk with my mail carrier "floater" that the different carriers we see all the time are indeed postal employees, however, under a different contract with a different pay and benefit scale. Their work ethic is very different from your regular mail carrier's. Is it any wonder most people pay their bills, etc. by e-mail?

Julie, I suggest that -- unless the mis-delivered mail you receive is within a house or two of being correct -- you take it back to the Clemente post office in person. With evidence of faulty delivery in your hand, you have much more power to complain about your own missing mail. When I did this a few years ago, it received much more attention than the simple "my mail is missing" message.

I agree with the other posters' observations about regular versus substitute mail carriers. The performance of the latter only serves to underscore the notorious reputation of the post office.

The quality of delivery accuracy to me has improved over the past two decades. However, my experience with neighborhood mailboxes has gone in the opposite direction. At this point, I drop all outbound mail only at the Clemente post office. Forgive me if this is a thread hijack, but I wonder how many others have been likewise trained by negative reinforcement into this habit.

Found dog (Craigslist)

I just saw this post on Craigslist for a found German shepherd:
http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/laf/4691098252.html

It seems that rather than hold onto the dog for a bit, someone contacted animal control, and the person who posted this claims the dog will be euthanized within a week. Not sure if that's true, but I certainly hope it isn't.

In any case, I hope this gets more exposure here.

RP, if your boy was a stray, he had a 5 day hold put on him. Then he was evaluated and got really lucky by being deemed adoptable and the space opening up for him in the adoption room.

The front of the building, the tip of the triangle which is near Augusta and Grand has some really cool Art Deco features, prime for recognition and restoration, or the landfill depending upon your religion.

It has been a hide-out for homeless in past years, and once in awhile we have to call the city to get the building cleared and the shabby boards back up.

If you went to Burnett and had a business plan, I bet he would listen to your idea and help you in whatever way he could.

I talked to the "director" in charge of approving new tenants before submitting my application to verify that my income/credit/rental history was sufficient to be approved. I do this for every place I rent as a safety measure to avoid wasting $$ on application fees. After being advised that my application would be approved, I handed over the $70 fee along with ALL off my personal financial information, including SSN's.

10 days have now gone by and every time I call to check the status of my application I am given the run-around. "The system is down, I'm waiting on an email, I'll call you back in 15," blah blah blah. The last time I called I asked to speak with a supervisor and was hung up on, with my follow up calls and messages being ignored.

Any input or help would be greatly appreciated. I saw some less than stellar impressions of this address and property manager AFTER if applied and started to wonder. Obviously now things are getting suspicious. Thanks.

  • Ms. Carl, As I stated to your husband, there was an unfortunate delay in processing your application which I apologized for. I agree that we should have responded quicker but I completely disagree that we were shady in any manner. To characterize honest mistakes as "shady" or "suspicious" is not fair and not correct. In any event, I will mailing out your app refund check today and wish much success in your apartment search. Thank you.

First, I do NOT ask for any personal information (SS#, bank account numbers, etc.) on the application. Rather, the service requires the potential tenant's email address. Second, the tenant gives the approval for the credit/background check directly to Transunion after I set up an account for that particular tenant. Third, I receive a notice that the information is ready, and I read it, and make a decision. Again, I have no personal information, one less thing that I don' t have to take care of (to keep that info safe), but more importantly, I think that's a selling point on renting with us!

Ask your potential landlord about this service. Better yet, the cost to the landlord is very inexpensive. I do add a small administrative fee. Still the total cost is about half of what you paid, Audrey Carl.

    Landlords: Use this service!

DISCLOSURE: I am NOT involved with this service in any way. For me, it's so much easier than having to do them myself, plus, as I said, I think it's a bonus for potential tenants.

He wouldn't exactly state his business, but it seemed that was the gist of his being there...he said he was door-knocking for my benefit and for the benefit of my neighbors.

I asked to photocopy some of his company's information, so I could look at it more carefully. He said it was the private property of his company, and wouldn't allow me to copy any of it. I asked if he had any material to give me that I could look over, and he said he did not.

A few years ago I was slammed by someone coming to my door about energy companies, etc. As a result, I am leery, so I told this man that I would contact Citizens' Utility Board first, and then look into his company based on their opinion.

I emailed CUB about Direct Energy, and am awaiting a response. I will post the answer from CUB as soon as I hear what they have to say.

Thanks.

  • Place a "No Solicitation" sign on your door. It has worked wonders for me,

  • I've done that. It's reduced the traffic @ 50%. For some reason, campaign workers don't feel they're "soliciting"...

Pet Insurance????

Can anyone recommend a pet insurance? I have a 1 year old boxer. Any information is helpful.

Thanks

  • AnnaWilson Anna

To update: The 24 Hour Pet Watch check bounced last night. So there's that.

  • I have VPI (petinsurance.com) and my dog has had 2 ACL surgeries (plus some other smaller treatments) almost completely covered. For example, they paid $1200 of a $1600 surgery. Definitely helpful. Customer service has always been great, super friendly. Never had a problem, I highly recommend them. My vet also...

It's good that you are thinking about this now, before you have pre-existing conditions. I find most people don't consider it until it's too late. I personally believe the monthly payment for the insurance is worth the financial peace of mind in the case of an emergency.

Polka Eatery 1000 N block of California

Since the KnockBox closed :-( I don't have a coffee spot close to me. I saw that the Polka Eatery had coffee so I stopped in. Super cute but very new, they just opened up. While I was getting my coffee I decided to get some breakfast and it was awesome! Two cheddar pierogi, half of sausage and two eggs. It was amazing and only 6 bucks.

  • RubyRed Dancer, Drummer, Cyclist

Darn! A good friend and I had been *just* talking about Polka, and how easy it is to dance Polka to a lot of pop songs, so when I saw this post about a Polka eatery, you can imagine my excitement!

    oh well…

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

Just told my roommates about this place. Will stop in when I get a chance!

Also Turkey Chop on Chicago Ave has great food too. That is a small local place. They feed homeless for free on Mondays so don't go during free food hours on Monday.

New candidate running for alderman in 26th ward

Anyone know anything about the new candidate running for alderman in the 26th ward? I don't know his name, but would like to learn more about him. Hoping someone can add more detail.

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

Let's not forget the military school fiasco.

  • I would be interested if anyone had a collection of links that explained candidate positions. I find it annoyingly difficult to find anything of substance. Part of filing should be the public posting of 100 pages of policy proposals personally written by the candidate.

For what it's worth, I discovered this blog trying to research Irizarry:

Light on substance, heavy on religion.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Logan Square

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps in Logan Square think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:

For those who are not familiar with ND, but curious, here's an invite link:

Entrepreneur on Milwaukee

Just saw a hooker pick up a john on Milwaukee, right across from the Logan Blue line station. At 11 am. Didn't have my phone on me, plus I doubt the police would be interested in an isolated incident. It IS isolated, yes? Or have others seen this activity around the station?

we're going to have to agree to disagree, kate.

eons ago i was a fanatically social and fiscal liberal who truly believed the disadvantaged could be raised up with a helping hand and that crime could be eradicated if we had mercy on criminals and led them to rehabilitation. i read the works of marx and lenin ... and alinsky, looking for hope but eventually saw through their empty, manipulative, failed philosophies.

i have seen 40-50 years of the failure of the liberal approach, the failure of protocols to treat, not punish, the criminal, to give away money to those who will not work.

i quit believing in that BS a long, long time ago. i grew up.

i no longer view crime, welfare, the economy, social policy, domestic and national policy, national defense, or much of anything else through the liberal kaleidoscope.

prison IS a deterrent ... for as long as the incarceration lasts. they come out, re-crime, return to prison. more deterrence. criminals come out, re-crime, die in the attempt. oh well, more deterrence.

i am an attorney and licensed private investigator. i am certified to, and do, train people to accurately shoot a firearm until an imminent threat on their life is stopped.

i believe that Themis holds the scales of justice in her left hand and the sword in her right for a reason. what is that reason? she is right-handed.

prostitutes fund pimps who fund groups that buy and sell drugs on a scale you cannot imagine, engage in sex trafficking, kill to protect their area and sales and secrets, buy sell and use illegal weapons. the whole money chain is toxic and corrupt - from the street to the kingpin.

someone very close to me was once saved from death by a coven of hookers, taken in by them while dying. the person survived and went to prison - rightly so. i, in turn, owe my life to that person.

so i do not hate prostitutes. my position is not ad hominem. my stance is pro law, pro safety.

so yes, absolutely. ENFORCE THE LAW. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CRIME.

  • Y'all are presuming a lot about folks you don't even know. I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex...

Y'all are presuming a lot about folks you don't even know. I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex workers out there who are in that situation; this is only to say that none of us know sh*t about their backgrounds or choices, so let's not fly off the handle talking about cutting off the drug-addled dragon's tails or whatever other sort of lame analogies for crime that we can come up with.

Gil, you haven't seen 40-50 years of a liberal failure. You've seen 40-50 years of a bipartisan failure to actually cooperate and work towards long-term and sustainable government solutions. But hey, I probably shouldn't expect too much from anyone who speaks of viewing the world merely through a "liberal" or "conservative" lens.

Found dog in logan square

At Schubert square apartments

  • Bludog you're right. She is on the stray dog list at this point. Probably only a five day hold because I doubt she is micro-chipped.

  • I got excited and forgot about the stray hold, poop.

Rat bashing game?

Last night, around 10pm, I heard some noise coming from my alley. I looked outside and saw three young men running around with baseball bats. Apparently they were chasing rats and beating them. They seemed to be having a lot of fun doing it. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of rats. I'm just curious...is this a thing? Rat hunting?

Garage parking spot for rent?

I am looking for a garage spot to rent near Logan Blvd/Francisco. If anyone has an open garage spot or knows someone who is looking for a renter, please send them my way. Timeline is flexible, but would prefer to start renting a month from now. Thank you in advance!
