1700 Block of Drake

My Husband, Daughter and I took a walk the other day and found a house we would like to purchase on the 1700 block of Drake, about 6 blocks form our current home on the North side of Armitage. Please let me know what your thoughts are in that particular block and the area in general. I have lived in Logan, Armitage/Kedzie area since 2000 but, before making a purchase, we would like to hear more about the general feeling of the area, especially now that we have a young child. Thanks in advance for anything that you might have to offer, I appreciate it!

  • Janelle- I would have the same concerns.

  • if you've lived close by since 2000, you probably know a lot about the area. Go there at different times of day, visit the local school, take your time looking it over.

Dog found

M:y husband found this dog this morning. He doesn't have a collar and is not neutered. He's safe now in our yard, but we will need to call Animal Control later this afternoon as we have two dogs of our own that are rather territorial. Please message me if this is your pup!

  • I saw no assumptions above. The combination of both not fixing your dog and letting him get loose makes you part of the problem and in need of a little shaming imo.

  • glad this pooch is back home and safe

High Quality window replacement contractor for vintage building

Unable to find the name of and link to a high quality window replacement contractor someone recommended 3+ weeks ago. It was a small shop in or near Logan Square. The contractor's site was extremely informative, eco-friendly, providing authentic repairs/replacements that meet qualifications for historic districts.

Hi good folks of EB!

The shelter is (again) in desperate need of the following items if you're able to donate (used items are more than ok, they just need to be clean).

I'll be dropping off the donations on Sat Oct 25, so there's plenty of time. I can pick up at your house or you can drop off at mine (near North and California Aves - message me for phone number and address).

Here's the list:
- dog or cat beds
- towels, blankets, anything clean, warm and fuzzy they can lay on
- treats of any kind
- dog and cat food (for the pet food pantry so people in need can keep their beloved animals and those animals stay out of these kinds of kill shelters)
- toys: chew toys (like nyla bones or kongs) and non-stimulant stuffed toys (no squeekers please - gets them too riled up in their cages)
- puppy potty training pads (there's a huge shortage of workers/volunteers, so they don't get walked often. If they have these, it means they don't have to sit in their pee/feces and it helps reduce the spread of disease.
- cleaning products of any kind to help keep the place disinfected
- heating pads (for kittens, bunnies or even the little squirrels they help nurse back to health)
- leftover dog or cat medicines or vitamins

I was just there on Monday and would love to get them stocked up on towels/beds etc so all the animals have somewhere warm and comfortable to lay (it really helps reduce stress for them).

I've attached some pictures from the last run I did for donations from you great folks! You can see the animals really love the blankets and beds! :)

And if you're thinking of adopting or want to foster some of these sweet babies, hit me up! More foster homes = we can get more of these animals out of kill shelters!

Thanks so much folks!

  • Meg, was going to drop off supplies tonight at humblebar after my last meeting... Am I too late? I can always drive it to the shelter myself. Lmk

  • meg

You're not too late! I'll be doing a SECOND pick up Friday night!!! I just needed to do a couple trips because you guys are so rad! Thanks Janelle!!

HUMBOLDT PARK — The Puerto Rican Cultural Center bought a former sausage warehouse on Division Street as it works to build an arts center that will include a performing arts theater, studio and living quarters for artists and a piano lounge.

The Paseo Boricua Arts Center is to built on Humboldt Park's Paseo Boricua, the strip of Division Street between California and Western.

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center kicked off its 5-year strategic plan to preserve and support the Puerto Rican community in Humboldt Park with the purchase of the warehouse at 2713 W. Division St., the former home of the Ashland Sausage Company.

“The acquisition of those properties is a major step in trying to commercially and culturally anchor our community as it faces the onslaught of an ever encroaching gentrification process which seeks to erase our historical memory from the Greater Humboldt Park community,” read an announcement from Ald. Roberto Maldonado’s office.

The properties will be converted into the new center, which will include 14 live/work space for community artists, a 99-seat theater for performance arts and dramatic productions, a retail arts gallery and a “wines of Latin America/Spirits of the Caribbean Piano Lounge,” according to Maldonado’s office.

The 3,000 square foot building sits across from the Puerto Rican Cultural Center along Paseo Boricua.

“The project will definitely invigorate the financial development of the community, and will provide a place where artists can realize themselves both economically and creatively,” according to Maldonado’s office. “It will truly foment a sense of place for our cultural workers.”

Belmont Bank will provide financing for the project. The Division Street Business Development Association, and its executive director Eduardo Arocho, will manage the initiative.

This is why it is frustrating when others insinuate that many are just being overly-sensitive about what is going on in HP. As stated in an earlier comment, just do a little more digging and all this info is available to you. There is literally nothing new in the article and if anything, it does not go deep enough.
While you are researching, follow the roots of the 'Se Vende' Campaign.
Again, there is room for a thriving, safe and developed HP for all without losing the soul of the immigrants that built this community but to do that there needs to be a tolerance. Tolerance does not include calling newcomers 'Barbarians'.

El Stops with Only One Exit?

I cannot think of another north side blue line stop that does, but maybe my memory isn't so good. Are there red line stops with only one entrance / exit?

If any of us want to petition the CTA about this at some point in future, it'd be useful to recognize how rare this phenomena is.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

LOL. The "Taj Mahal" station at Roosevelt. I love it. I have to assume that the Roosevelt station is greatly influenced by the Bears and Soldier Field. That's the station tons of people get off / on for games and concerts.

  • Alya A. Bucktown to Logan

The station at Roosevelt also connects three lines, which only happens one other place outside the loop that I can think of.

As was said above, short of demolishing buildings/spending millions of capital the CTA does not have, unfortunately making each station accessible is just not in the cards right now.

Forming a ceramics/pottery co-op!

Hello, we are in the process of forming co-op for ceramicists that need a space to throw and fire their work. The goal is to pool our resources together so that we can get a space where we can work. We can also use this space to have monthly gallery openings so that we can show our work to the neighborhood. We have three people interested so far, anyone on here interested?

Also, does anyone know of potential places where we could set up a kiln? It would have to be a place that we could vent, like somewhere that used to be equipped for a kitchen.

Thanks neighbors!

  • Hello there I am interested in hearing more about this possible co-op ceramicists location. The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

http://www.useful-community-development.org/re-zoning-opposition.html
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate law/zoning/proposed_rezoning_change.htm
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/zoning/object_neighbor_zoning.htm

Let's keep this discussion ongoing on this site until this is resolved. Please tell others.

  • Don't forget, most public library branches have meeting room facilities as well. The state attorney general, and the Chicago Bar Association are examples of organizations to contact to get free legal advice/help. This forum and knocking on your neighbor's doors are probably the best way to contact interested parties. Again, pictures/renderings of what is proposed will go far to explain the situation.

  • A public library to meet and discuss neighborhood issues. What an excellent use of tax dollars! Salata, that was an encouraging article. It's funny how Ocasio wanted to prevent block developers by limiting how many stories a building could be and now the selfsame people who passed that ordinance are the very ones who want to build a monstrosity of a building.

    Muskateer: Our choices are limited.

A vote for Maldo is a vote for a repeat performance, which isn't good enough for our neighborhood. The reasons are vast and the logic is self-evident.

A vote for Irazarry (she worked for many [if not all] of the non-profit housing organizations in our "hood") is a vote for an acceleration of unchecked government spending of tax-payer dollars. Under her direction, bigger, denser, taller, and even less appropriate subsidized housing will be built in greater numbers, and in total disregard to community concerns.

A vote for Corona means that you want someone experienced with taking care of infrastructure problems, public safety issues, and overdue city services. What other kind of leadership is he capable of? I am hopeful and willing to take the chance. As if there is an option.

Right now, if you complain about a pothole in the 26th Ward, the average time it takes is 5 months to repair.

I performed a totally unscientific test on potholes this year. From May 2014 until August 2014 I filed over 100 pothole requests on streets in the 26th Ward. Specific addresses were given, location in the roadway was specified, etc.

Less than 20% had been completed within 30 days.

Most of them took 60-90 days to be filled.

More than 20% remain open after more than 5 months.

Some of that is the city of Chicago, but when you see things getting done for Maldonado's friends and not the ordinary residents, what are you supposed to think?

I don't care if Corona is a Union member. Saying you won't vote for him because he is a Union worker seems a bit narrow-minded to me. We are a working class neighborhood. Corona is working class. You might try to meet him at one of his events if you are really concerned about who is running. Or, if you want to judge from your computer chair, I understand, but please really think about the alternatives.

    Yikes.

  • You got point, we know what we have with Maldonado, with Irazarry will be same or even worst, she won't represent regular residents.
Corona hard to tell, I'm wondering why he is so quiet with his campaign.

This is not looks good for us.

Mariachi Band Recommendations?

I want to surprise my husband with a mariachi band for his birthday party in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have recommendations for a great band to hire just to play for an hour or so? Any ideas of how much I should expect to pay?

Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

  • When your precious free roaming cat destroys my yard with its urine and feces, and decides that its the perfect place for a kill zone.. then im going to make sure you as an owner knows that I wont tolerate it, and make sure that my yard is not a friendly place for your cat.

    Stop being selfish.

  • lol yes bc those outdoor cats are peeing and pooping alllll over these lawns here in chicago. btw I am all for indoor cats.

This problem is caused by the employer Youth Workforce on Fullerton(at Western). They saturate Logan Square with young people hocking the paper. I get them twice a month. I quickly explain that I get these requests twice a month and I won't be subscribing. When they are persistent and sometimes aggressive I let them know I think their employer is scamming them by sending them in territory so overrun with requests that the likelihood of a sale is very low.
Two responses that young people seem to understand.
"What if I came to you twice a month and asked you buy something you already had (ie cell phone)? would you buy one every two weeks?"
"What is your address?" WHY " I would like to be able to come by your home and request a DONATION when I am running low on funds."

I have become so annoyed over the 7+ years living here that I have called the Tribune to complain twice. This falls on deaf ears. They should not be affiliated with Youth Workforce.

I'm not seeing how Robin's experience equates to Godwin's Law. This came to mind:

    http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2013/09/hendersons_godw.html

"When people in a political discussion want to put down other people who even mention Hitler, they will invoke Godwin's Law even if the person compared no one to Nazis or Hitler."

That said, I could care less how McDonald's advertises as far as language. If anything, most people's distaste comes from how they target children with their happy meal toys. It's the Espanol-speakers that ought to be offended here, if anyone.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

I worked in marketing. There's a lot of importance placed on language spoken in the home. That's the language of family and friends... brands want to be your friend. When you see an ad in Spanish next time assume this and don't be offended or assume that the targeted audience doesn't know English. They most likely do.

Most of the other stations that have them though are fronting more major streets than California, which is relatively easy to cross - especially now that they've installed the mid-block crossing. At both Damen and Western there is a major road that the second stairwells bypass. The subway and interstate stations are whole other animals that can't really be viewed as the same category as these legacy stations.

Obviously in an ideal world you'd have it. Given the financial and space restrictions that everyone has mentioned though, it seems to make sense to just have the one...at least in my mind.

Depressed by Traffic Jams?

Is it me, or is every way that one can drive into the city from Humboldt Park is now congested due to all kinds of construction projects. I have been so frustrated lately.

I try to take the train/bus as much as possible, but sometimes I need to drive. If folks have found good solutions for car routes, please share. I had pretty good success taking California to Roosevelt into downtown this morning.

Hey Michael - was not intending to throw any negativity into the mix. If it sounded like I was, my apologies. I fully admit I have a true love / hate relationship with bikers. Ones that follow the rules of the road, or at least don't do anything that may cause harm, I'm all for. I see a lot of bikers, however, that should not be riding on city streets, especially ones without bike lanes. They don't seem to have the appropriate spatial ability to discern how close they are to parked cars vs moving cars. During rush hours, having those types of riders on certain roads can cause a great deal of havoc. And yes, I say the same thing about crappy drivers as well.

  • Not everyone can bike, but if more who could would, the congestion around Humboldt Park wouldn't be so bad. The original poster is right - trying to drive in this city during rush hour can be depressing - literally so, in fact. Biking on Chicago's streets can be intimidating at first, but everyone starts somewhere. I ride from the Humboldt Park area to the west loop every day and would be happy to ride along with anyone who is interested by nervous about doing so alone.

Biking to public transit may also be an option for those who are sick of being stuck in traffic. The transit coverage in Humboldt Park leaves much to be desired, but the transit options expand greatly for anyone willing to bike a mile or so (approximately 5 minutes of biking at a moderate pace).

Covered Parking near Palmer Square/LS el stop?

I was wondering if any of you know of or have a garage spot available for rent that's located near Palmer Square, the Logan Square el stop or anything in between?

I'm looking to start renting the spot beginning mid Nov or Dec 1, ideally on a month to month basis, and I'll likely keep it through March or April.

Thanks!

LOST GRAY CAT

We haven't seen our gray cat since around noon on Saturday October 5th. He is all gray except for 2-3 small patches of white on his chest. He is VERY friendly and vocal. He also has allergies and without medicine his left eye will be watery.

He is very loved and we would be heart broken if we lose him.

No collar but he is chipped.
Any help would be great appreciated. Phone number is 708-908-0055 call or text any time of day.

  • Aspira Charter Schools reviewed

I recently attended a 7-8 grade volleyball game at the Aspira middle school campus on Leland Ave. Students were out of control, foul mouth, disrespectful and security guards were oblivious. Must be the "norm" for this school. Very sad! Stay away, terrible atmosphere.

  • thanks, josh, it's the city clerk's "find your ward and alderman"page that tells me i'm in 35 so not all is updated yet. i guess,

the site you sent shows me in 1st ward, but i'll just go to the closest place tomorrow and hope it goes smoothly.

  • voted with no problem at humbolt library. wow -- have never seen so many judge retentions on a ballot. glad i printed out my cheat sheet. took a while as machines were a little balky. there were only a few people early voting today. :{

Deck construction folks?

Hi all. I'm looking to re-do my backyard deck and was wondering if anyone had some good folks they could point me towards? Yelp seems less than helpful and Angie's List is largely bought and paid for. Many thanks in advance.

  • If you need just 'shoring up' until the spring, I have an excellent workman neighbor who may be able to help in that aspect until you can have what you need done. (He is presently doing an amazing metal 2 story back porch, replacing a wood one)
(Workman can just be the most frustrating thing....)

  • Thanks, Kittyhop. Yes, I think it needs to be completely torn down and rebuilt, I think we'll just try again in the spring.

New development at Shakespeare and Campbell?

Saw a posting on 2 houses a few weeks ago--maybe regarding a change to zoning--does anyone know anything about it? I think it's proposed to be a multi-unit building. I've searched online but can't find anything more.

Cat Food Donation (opened bag, unused portion)?

Any local rescue or similar that accept dry cat food donations (*opened bags*). I've gone through a few partial bags of food while switching my cat to something new. Rather than throw out perfectly good cat food, I'd like to at least try and donate.

One container is a mix of 3 flavors of Nature's Variety Instinct Grain Free (Duck, Rabbit, Chicken). Maybe 2 or 3 lbs worth. And the other is a 5 lbs. or so bag of the same brand, salmon flavor. None of them sat well with my cat for whatever reason.

Alert! Spotted a coyote at Talman and George

Please be careful out there! Just a few minutes ago, hubby and I are driving south on Talman we spotted a coyote standing in the middle of the road, then it moved onto the sidewalk heading north on Talman. We are new to the area and had no idea they are in this area, especially the streets of Chicago. Is this a common occurrence?

Halloween Decorations 2014

Hello neighbors! Just wanted to say, it is great to see more seasonal décor going up. If you have never thought about doing so, remember that it helps the overall look/appearance of the neighborhood. It may seem like a small thing, but it makes the n'hood look more inviting. Please rake leaves, pickup trash, put up some lights, Halloween or autumnal décor(if you're into that sort of thing). Tend to shrubbery, trees and gardens. And if you have a porch light, please use it. Lights can deter a lot of mischief. Let's keep the neighborhood on track of looking great, as we have been doing!!

  • Betzaida Live 6 blocks from Humboldt Park

I put up some Halloween decorations at my home and the kids just love it! I'm so glad I did it.

  • That is awesome. Another way to make memories with them!

Greetings! Where can I find them?

Dear Neighbors,
Any little shops in Logan Square offer non-commercial/handmade/original (you get the picture) greeting/birthday cards? I would need to buy today, post today.
Cheers,
K.

So glad the art of letter writing isn't completely dead. Nothing is better than getting something in the mail like a note from a friend. Thought it was just me. Good job letter writer! :)

  • Hooray! Thanks. Yes, I find it incredibly satisfying to sit down with "quill" and drop a few lines. Just think, with the amount of time many of us spend on idiot Facebook (guilty as charged), we could probably craft a few letters to a few people who could really use the pleasant surprise in their mailbox.

Thinking about moving to California & Rockwell

Hello, I recently sold my place and was looking toward the California & Rockwell area. Not to familiar with the area, like how there is some cool restaurants a few blocks away. Always hear on the news about crime and gang activity in Logan square. Is this a good area to move?

thanks for the help!

Friendly people, well kept homes, prices have gone up, still some bargains around. Your best bet is to go the locations you are interested in, go on different days, different times, drive & walk around the area, up & down the side streets & main streets, do this often and you will know where you feel like 'home'. I've lived here for many years, thru the ups & downs of the area. Transportation is great, walk to Blue Line, take it downtown, O'Hare & Midway, Kennedy Expressway is 2 blocks from me, shopping is great & many nearby restaurants, can't beat this location.

Ronny's Bar Project/Golden Teardrops Happening?

Anyone in the know know what happened or is going to happen with the Ronny's bar conversion that was planned by some of the Longman and Eagle/Parsons folks? They were going to totally rehab Ronny's bar. I see they initially applied for permits back in June and July...as referenced below...but there seems to have been no activity since. I'm curious if they're still going to move ahead. It would be nice to have that eyesore renovated.
