People. Please. Leash your dogs.

If your dog needs off-leash time, take them to one of the multitudes of fenced in dog parks around the city. That's why they're there. Please. This is not rocket science but it is the law.

This off-leash problem is rampant and ridiculous and those who do it are ruining the park for the rest of us, a public park paid for by everyone.

I am calling 911 every single time I see off-leash dogs and the police are showing up. I hope the rest of us responsible folk will do the same. Spread the word.

The police are there to serve in such situations. I can promise that some guy isn't committing crimes and getting away with it because CPD is preoccupied writing leashing tickets. It would be great to have more dog parks in the city. I do not own a dog but live across the street from the one in Wicker Park and it certainly brings a lot of life and positive vibes to the area.

I never bring my dog to the park, so I can't speak about interactions there. I do agree that it would be nice to have a dog park at Humboldt Park since it is such a HUGE park. My interactions with off leash dogs have always been on the sidewalks. I agree that the first thing to do is to ask the owner to put the dog back on a leash. However, my boyfriend and I have asked people to put their dogs back on the leash and they either ignore us, scoff, or, if their dog approached ours, apologize profusely. Among dogs who didn't approach us, I don't think I've ever had an owner put the leash on the dog after we've requested it. We've gotten the same reaction (i.e. ignoring) with people who don't pick up after their dog as well. Yes, some people genuinely ran out of bags, to which we provide them one (and they're very thankful). Regarding the CPD resources...according to Becky (and other previous EveryBlock posts), the police are telling residents to call for police assistance. Yes, if you feel comfortable approaching the owner to kindly ask for the dog to be put back on leash, that is preferable. However, if you do not feel comfortable or feel that your safety is threatened in some way, whether it be by the dog or their owner, then I see nothing wrong with calling the police, as per their instructions. I mean, just a year ago, there was a man who approached a stranger to ask him to pick up after his dog, and that ended up becoming an aggravated assault with a knife. Of course that's not the typical response you'd get, but there is always a threat to safety, and I can appreciate that.

As the Alderman walked passed the empty buildings and undeveloped lots he felt both lonely and scared. He knew that if he could just identify the person then he could eliminate this threat, but he could not see who it was.

This is how social media sites functions allowing people to follow politicians online and comment on their work without the politician being able to threaten or harass the person. The ability to stay anonymous and still share information is changing everything. Let's change the politics in Humboldt Park.

I saw that you, Alderman Roberto Maldonado, started a new account here on EveryBlock with the purpose of trying to undermine critical voices against you. The account is using the name "debloetz" . For example, you are trying to make people think that I work for a competing politician. I think it's scary that you waste time on such work instead of explaining why you work against the working class, unemployed and underemployed people in your ward.

See photo. See how scary 2734 West Division Street store front looks after dark. No wonder Division Street between Western and California does not attract any customers after dark.

Shame on you Alderman Roberto Maldonado for letting business after business fail right outside of your office.

  • Jose J at this point I feel sorry for you u waste to much time of the day worring about what the Alderman does with his day. how much money are u getting from the other candidates for you to keep tabs on him I really hope its good money because not to long ago u needed a job !

Logan Pets out of business

I just received this email today about Logan Pets going out of business. I am so upset and disappointed. The owners are wonderful people and this was a rare location where my 13 year old dog loved to be groomed.

  • Glad I could help!

  • This may just be a case of the landlord not realizing what having a pet realted business in their building means. It can be a lot of wear and tear on a storefront. All of that may have caused a lot of bad blood between the landlord and logans pets. Who knows what really happened.

The reason for me to start today is that I heard that NPR is having several programs this coming week specifically discussing what woman want from politicians in Chicago.

Humboldt Park politics has for years been steered by male agendas while woman's concerns has been silenced. One of my greatest concerns is the lack of emphasis for economical development in the 26th Ward. The lack of economical development affects woman at all levels.

My highest priority is job creation and business development in Humboldt Park. I am concerned about the lack of jobs for young people who graduate from school. Without an entry job and without any tutoring there is no future. Teenagers and youth loose their hope and turn to any possibility for making money which can be crimes and gang activity. Only a strong job creation program can solve this problem.

Humboldt Park has an unusually high unemployment rate. Unemployment is at the root to many basic problems such as access to good living conditions, healthy food, health problems, crimes, domestic violence and even such an obvious thing as fear to let children go out and play. Job creation for the people living in Humboldt Park should be the driving force of the area's politics and it has not been for decades. Many woman cannot find any job in the area and if they find one the pay is so low that they cannot survive on it.

Alderman Ronaldo Maldonado has had no effective solution or program confronting the high unemployment in the 26th Ward. He does not seem to be concerned about this basic issue at all. I have looked at the other contestants and find Adam Corona being a good candidate. He seems to be a strong man who understand the need for the importance of new jobs in the area and he has the right experience to get businesses attracted to Humboldt Park.

I want to hear from woman who are concerned about the future of the people of Humboldt Park, so please, post your thoughts here. Maybe we can change the direction of the politics in the 26th Ward and Humboldt Park.

Renters insurance recommendations?

Hey neighbors,

I'm considering getting renters insurance for the first time since our landlord has failed to fix leaks and water damage for years now and I'm worried about damaging my belongings.

Can you recommend any good, affordable companies/policies?

Thanks for the help.

I use AllState and pay about $20 per month. Chose to go with them because they cover dog liability. My renters insurance isn't bundled with any other insurance (e.g. car).

They're the best of friends so they must live together. They had no tags and no chips. If these are your dogs or if you know the owner, please contact me!!

  • Did not realize they were seniors they don't look it from the pix. Can't imagine having unfixed pets running around for a decade

Tired of those junk newspapers, mailers, and coupons on your doorstep?

Yeah, me too. I am tired of picking up that junk on a daily basis; soggy junk mail in bags. Even more annoying that it eventually becomes litter and blows all around the street.

HOY, ShopLocal, Red Plum.

All of it. Make it stop!

Most of it comes from a partnership between the Tribune, and Valassis, a direct mail company. They are required to discontinue delivery immediately if the resident contacts them to complain.

To do that:

spark energy update?

The other day, caught off guard, I allowed myself to switch to Spark Energy due to the persistence of two door to door salesmen. Looking at past threads on this topic, it seems lots of folks have had bad experiences, and some folks have seen reduced savings and feel it is a legit company with bad solicitation tactics.

Was I scammed? I feel like a goof for ignoring my gut. Thanks!

  • Joe

I have saved with first energy for electricity and direct energy on gas (except Dec, Peoples would have been cheaper) Peoples gas charge changes every month. Lots of threads on this.

  • Like kittyhop says, read the receipt they gave you - you have maybe a week from the signing date during which you can cancel. Not sure of the exact time limit; it IS short. But if you do some quick research you can decide whether Spark is worth it for a year.

Looking for wood shop space to rent..

Hi, three friends and I are looking for a wood shop space to rent in the Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square neighborhood. Ideally we'd hope to have the space to ourselves and pay monthly rent. If you know of anyone with a vacant garage/building that wouldn't mind the noise and sawdust please let me know! Note, we would be providing all our own tools so we're basically just needing an empty room with electricity.

Thanks!

I might add that in the many discussions I have had with people over the years about "affordable housing" people again don't have a problem with it philosophically.

It is when the number of units built on one block, or in an area, or when the type of style is out of character with the neighborhood that is the problem.

The fact is that the 26th Ward has one of the highest number of affordable housing units in the entire city, and the vast majority of residents think we have enough.

With veterans programs offering low interest financing at 103% of the purchase price (YES, cashback!!!) there certainly isn't the need for a monolith among the 2 and 3 flats.

Increased home ownership would truly stabilize the community and promote equality.

Building permanent rentals, building too close to the sidewalk, building much much higher than all of the existing residential buildings, and skimping on the parking is a sure way to start off on the wrong foot with your neighbors!!!

It seems like the developers WANT conflict.

If the long-existing zoning was maintained rather than abandoned, and some attractive 2 to 3 unit buildings were put up across from the park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, it would be a permanent protection of that land from encroaching and dominating the parkscape.

The Obama Presidential Library might be turned down for encroaching on public park space, but it looks like Roldan will get a free pass.

  • Thank you neighbors! This thread has been really helpful and informative.

Question about front yard fences

My neighbor is putting up a fence to close off the courtyard of their building. Where he is putting the fence will completely block the side of my porch and if I need porch repairs or gutter repairs, the fence will make it hard to get to. The fence is on his property line but I want to know if it is legal for him to put a fence up literally 6 inches from my porch and blocking it off.

Not cool, Moreno

Is it normal for campaign volunteers to canvass door-to-door at 8pm? We were putting our 6 month old to bed and got our buzzer rung...twice! My husband ran outside and gave them the what-for. The goons seemed less than contrite.

  • 1st Ward Alderman Proco Joe Moreno

    Hi Alya,
Sorry for the disturbance. It is common for campaign volunteers to canvass at times when it seems likely that residents will be home from work. I'll speak to our volunteers personally to address this specific complaint.
    Thank you for the feedback.

  • All our volunteers have been asked to not canvas past 7pm. I, too, am a mom and in general, feel residents are settled for the evening by that time. Have also reminded all volunteers that NO literature is to go into mail boxes. Have seen some literature (not ours) slid in the boxes. Working towards Feb 24 -- unless we have a run off, residents should not be bothered after that date! Don't forget -- 1st Ward Debate Jan 29, 7pm at Wells High School.

  • I, too had an incident about a week ago-I believe they were campaigning for Jan Schawosky. I probably spelled that incorrectly. Anyway, they laid on my buzzer like the building was on fire and woke me up. (I had the flu.) I just said "no thank you" and they went away. I should have gone downstairs and explained to them why this behavior was unacceptable. Can't believe they think this is ok.

Kids stealing packages

Around 3:35 I saw a group of kids running north on the 2400 block of Spaulding Ave (about halfway between Fullerton and Altgeld). They ran up the stairs of a porch across the street from me, grabbed some packages that were on the stoop, and ran away down an alley. I couldn't tell if they had taken anything from more than one house.

I called 311, but was told I couldn't report it because I wasn't the victim. I'll let my neighbors know, but I just wanted to let people in the area know to be on the lookout and watch out for their packages. The kids were male and probably early to mid teens .

I'm writing a story on healthcare, specifically on how the Affordable Care Act has made the system more efficient or less efficient (for you). Obama has tried to streamline medical documents using technology, such as electronic health records.

So, I'm looking specifically for a patient who HAS had difficulty or has NOT had difficulty with needing medical documents transferred from one hospital (for many reasons) to another hospital.

It this applies to you, I'd love to speak with you and share your story.

If your interview is used, it would be published on a Chicago news website.

Integrys offering to remove a charge from ComEd bill

Did anyone else have an Integrys person come by this week offering to remove a charge from their ComEd bill? The guy who came to my house said they had charged customers for a monthly charge that they weren't supposed to have, and the man at my door could remove the charge if he could see my electric bill. Apparently the code states you have to be 30 FEET from a stop sign or traffic signal, however, I can't actually find the code. I plan on attempting to contest it. This just seems like some BS way of creating revenue, especially when there are no signs posted or markings on the curb and there are and have been several cars parked just as close to the stop sign or in the same exact spot for years, and I've never seen a car ticketed ONCE. I'm mad. Anyone have any suggestions for anything I can do to be productive? Otherwise, I will just stew in my anger and out $60. This was at the stop sign at Spaulding and Schubert, near the blue line.

Piper - I've gotten a ticket in the exact spot you mention. I have seen other cars ticketed there since, but the enforcement is very irregular so you will see people parked there basically 24/7. I never intentionally park illegally but it's a very confusing area since the stop sign is not very near the corner or the crosswalk.

I've even asked a parking enforcement person who was writing tickets what areas are legal in that dead end and what are not. She told me that parallel to the curb was ok, except near the stop sign, corner, and fire hydrant. She also said that the "head in" spots were legal "about half-way" (?!?) across the dead end but this is apparently subjective because my husband just received a ticket when parked there. Grrrrr. Actually he received two within 24 hours -- we appealed both by mail & got the duplicate dismissed, at least.

Also, as a head's up, I've gotten a ticket parallel parked on the north side of that dead end for parking in the wrong direction when pointed toward Milwaukee. Apparently some others have too because now you will see cars parked in both directions on that side (nose to nose or tail to tail). I've been on this block for almost 8 years and never saw anyone parked pointed away from Milwaukee until this year. (For those not familiar, the dead end is all of 3 cars long & has no room to turn around.) I can't even see how cars get in there that way without some illegal driving moves. I just avoid that whole area as much as possible, but as you know parking is sometimes tough to find.

I'd gladly avoid parking illegally if I could only figure out what is legal. :( Who could I ask to get a definitive answer? I'd also be happy to pursue getting reasonable signage/paint if possible - I guess the alderman would be the starting point?

  • I know this is an old post, but I wanted to chime in that I contest every single ticket I or my husband get, most of which have been for this violation of parking too close to a stop sign. I would say they throw out 2 of 3. It is ALWAYS worth a shot, just don't forget to take and include photos in your contest!

Lost Lake coming to former Previous Administration Spot

Hi again, everyone. I read in Zagat's list of most anticipated spots of 2015 that our neighbor Paul McGee had joined forces with the Land & Sea Dept. folks - and that we're getting a tiki bar. Rent vs. ownership

I think one of the key issues is that these small businesses rent rather than own. Ideally, if a small business can own the property, it can avoid increase in rents, etc. I know, a pipe dream for many but if you can own your building it would seem much easier to run your business.

But to generalize your experience is to allow survivor bias to creep in as you ignore the fact that very few businesses last 25 years and even fewer in the same location.

Most fledgling companies would never be approved for a property loan without a personal guarantee. And even if they could, it still might not make sense. You may want to move, expand, contract, etc. Renting, while more expensive, provides this flexibility which is EXTREMELY valuable.

  • Carter O'Brien Chicagoan

I think these are all good points, and it's valuable to hear a wide range of opinions on the subject. One nuance I haven't heard discussed per se is just how much customization does your business require, in terms of infrastructure build out. The owner of a law office may not feel a need to purchase the property as moving is relatively painless. A dentist may see it differently due to equipment requirements, a yoga studio owner who breaks his/her back to put in really nice hardwood flooring, etc.

It has now come to my attention that the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norwegian-American Hospital plan to build a large apartment complex specifically for Borinqueneers veterans in the Humboldt Park area.

If I understand correctly, the housing complex is to be built in an area that is zoned for 2 story homes and that the zoning for this specific lot was changed to accommodate for this new apartment complex.

When I look at Google map I can see that the lot would fit 14 buildings if built the same size as the rest of the neighborhood. In the USA, the average household has about 2.5 persons. If built as the rest of the neighborhood, the lot would house about 35 residents.

The proposed building has 50 apartments and are planned to house about hundred veterans. That means that Hispanic Housing Development Corporation is planning to squeeze us into a high density dwelling situation. Aren't they aware that high density population is the number one indicator of slum.

Looking at Google map and reading the blogs here on EveryBlock I can see that the Norwegian-American Hospital has plenty of open spaces around the hospital where REAL HOMES can be built for veterans. If you at Hispanic Housing Development Corporation really want to show us your appreciation for our services build us real homes and not overcrowded dwellings.

  • I think that people are objecting to the density of the project, and questioning whether the occupants will actually be vets and/or low income.

When Presidential Towers was first proposed, at least 20% of the units were to be reserved for low income residents. The building's owners fought to have that percentage lowered, and eventually, after government loans were paid off, eliminated the low income units entirely.

This being Chicago, people are naturally skeptical.

Objections include giving a no-bid multi-million dollar tax funded gift to a political donor. The addition of obtaining a zoning change of PD 599 without a commitment to add additional parking despite having less than 70 parking spaces (need 490) required in the original bequest is just the coup de grace. Besides transportation is a little bit important for the ambulances that come to and from the hospital.

Alderman Roberto Maldonado is now buying and selling gold making a fortune.

The Mario & Cesar's Jewelry at 2629 West Division Street is now working together with Alderman Roberto Maldonado in an attempt to buy up all family jewelry in the 26th Ward. Unfortunately, there is not much family gold left around Division Street between Western and California as the area's unemployment has been really bad for a long time - but - according to Alderman Roberto Maldonado, "every ounce counts". That business strategy is in contrast to more successful politicians who base their policy on "EVERY JOB COUNTS.".

Jose J, I admire your passion but these daily postings may serve to alienate those who are undecided. Rather than doing this your time would be better served working on a campaign for one of his opponents. Go talk to people one on one and explain what your candidate would do and why his platform is better than Maldonado's.

Alderman Roberto Maldonado has found a perfect parking spot at 2628 W. Division St.

Division Street between Western and California has parking meters so Alderman Roberto Maldonado was worried that he might get a parking ticket. Fortunately, he found an entire lot where he now can park his car. See posted picture. Some neighbors think that using an entire store front lot just to park a car is a little over the top but Alderman Roberto Maldonado think it's okay as there are barely any customers walking on the street anyway.

Some neighbors think that using an entire store front lot just to park a car is a little over the top but Alderman Roberto Maldonado think it's okay as there are barely any customers walking on the street anyway.

Here are more of Alderman Ronaldo Maldonado's highlights:

• No effective job-creation program for youth and unemployed residents in the 26 Ward.
• No active business development growth program with job-creation as goal.
• No educational programs that show long term job opportunities and sustainable income growth opportunities.
• Alderman Roberto Maldonado is involved with development of low income housing projects without the possibility for residents to buy the unit. The rental situation creates dependency because the poor cannot create financial equity through ownership. Rental makes poor people stay poor.
• Roberto Maldonado only accepts businesses on Division Street between Western and California which suit his and his friends agenda and not a long-time economical growth of the area. Just Division Street from Western to California could employ hundreds of people with the right business growth plan.

If you want to see empty lots and empty store front develop into successful businesses make sure you get out and vote for someone who actually can attract businesses into the 26th Ward so that young people and unemployed people can get jobs. Roberto Maldonado is the wrong Alderman for the 26 Ward.

It looks like I'm not the only person who finally got sick enough of "Jose J" spam to comment. Previously I was going to jokingly suggest that "Jose J" is actually working for Maldonado to make the opponents look bad. Most such "conspiracy theories" are just junk, but each poorly thought out post makes it seem more and more probable.

I guess I don't care enough to do it myself - from the posting history of "Jose J", can anyone tell which campaign appears to be paying "him" to make the candidate look bad? If these blindly "pro-business" posts actually reflect the views of the candidate, then we can conclude that that candidate is essentially a typical, low-grade suburban Republican. That's exactly the attitude that is resistant to long-term planning that seeks to benefit the whole community, in the race-to-the-bottom pursuit of bending over for "job creator" "business interests". In other words - exactly the mindset that would buy into supporting WalMart development in the area, permanently marking the area as slummy.

Also, if "Jose J" was posting in Spanish, "he" would simply be pissing off Spanish speakers. Hopefully, whatever candidate "he" works for has allocated a more competent staffer to that segment of the electorate. But whatever campaign is so incompetent as to tolerate this garbage probably isn't competent enough to figure that out.

too early?

At what time are the construction guys supposed to start working ??? They are working on the Water project by Kimball/Palmer..

  • 8 am for private work; allegedly 7am for govt work; but the city can claim hardship and work whenever they want.
I know that sounded snarky, but that's really the system we have.

  • When they were expanding the Kennedy years ago , they worked 24 hours, alongside housing.

A Stupid Criminal From Roberto Clemente Community Academy

One attends Roberto Clemente Community Academy but apparently did not learn that robbing people at gun point is wrong. Both are residents of the Logan Square area which is now safer that these criminals have been removed from our streets. It is both funny and sad that one criminal is so stupid that he shot himself while handling his gun and eating stolen pizza at the same time! The high point of the story is that the two are now behind bars before they graduated from armed robbery to murder. I was happy to read one victim was only hit with the gun and neither victim was shot.

Division Medical Center at 2641 West Division Street has not been able to pay their gas bill(See posted picture). Yet another medical provider in Humboldt Park faces economical problems. Patients seem to prefer to avoid Division Street between Western and California and go elsewhere.

Why does customers flee Division Street between Western and California when the street is perfect for business of all kind. Wide sidewalks with beautiful trees and plenty of store fronts should be a perfect situation for a profitable business community with the ability to provide jobs for hundreds of people from the neighborhood. The area is located just in the middle between successful Wicker Park and beautiful Humboldt Park. There should be many times more customers walking the street looking for cafes, restaurants and stores of all kind. How can it be possible that all businesses are struggling or are already out of business? Who is to blame?

Humboldt Park has more than 3 times higher unemployment than the rest of the USA. While politicians in the rest of the USA has been working to develop new businesses and more job opportunities Alderman Roberto Maldonado has done exactly the opposite. He has been busy increasing the number of unemployed or underemployed people in the area further marginalizing the areas businesses and working class.

Only real job opportunities with a growing and sustainable future can help people out of poverty. It is crucial for teenagers and young people in Humboldt Park to get a first-time job that leads somewhere but with almost 18% unemployment in Humboldt Park there are no opportunities. Alderman Roberto Maldonado has no realistic business growth or job-creation programs in his plans for the future. Just more of the same failed politics.

Shame on you Alderman Roberto Maldonado for not caring about the teenagers and the young people's future in the 26 Ward.
