He made a sly remark and that was the end of THIS customer going back. I would go for oil changes only. I would always recommend they have "Ladies discount days", like another places I've been to. Lost dog near Altgeld and California named "Louie"

Around 6.30am when I was out walking my dog a neighbor was calling for his dog, Louie (Louis?).

He seemed distraught, and in not shire if he's posted here yet. He described Louie as a brown / tan, very large pit bull. He lives in the apartments on he corner of Altgeld and California above Mops Beauty. I didn't get a name or apartment number.

If anyone has seen Louie, feel free to message me and I'll try to find the owner.

Keep a lookout for Louie, it's cold out there!

  • If you find the owner, tell him to post flyers all over the area right away-it can be very effective. Thanks for helping out.

I want your happy chickens eggs!

Anyone in Humboldt Park raising chickens, interested selling eggs? I am located around Division and Spaulding and would love to buy some local eggs. Sadness eggs are the pitts. I go through a dozen eggs every two weeks or so.

  • as LSanne says...my friends raise chickens out in the south burbs and they basically stop laying in the winter...if they ran lights with their heaters they would keep laying, but at a much reduced rate. during the winter, i think the indoor logan square farmers market has some -- of course pricey.

About those EB Daily Digest Crime Reports...

Sometimes the crime listed is not readily understood from the description. The link below is to the Illinois State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Offense Codes. You can get the crime from the EB Daily Digest, then refer to the Codes for the applicable IL statute, then just Google the statute number found under ILCS Reference.

Tuxedo cat seen and outdoor cat shelter needed

Is anyone missing a tuxedo cat? I'm assuming it's a stray because it's relatively thin. She's a really friendly cat though. She let me pet her when I walked up to her and rolled on her belly for me to pet it.

I didn't bring her inside because I'm pretty sure she's a stray and my cats would kill her, but I just wanted to post this just in case.

On that note, does anyone make winter cat shelters? I know they're easy to make and I can do it myself but if anyone has any handy I'd like to put some in my area for the season.

Thanks!

Need of your expertise/advise on this matter. My furnace's circulating water pump is making a loud noise when starting and the noise continues while operational. Can anyone recommend a solution and/or reasonable HVAC technician?

Thank you, all.

Need to rent or borrow a table

Hi there - I'm hosting t-giving for more people than I have table space for. I think I'll need one more table, ideally a folding, adjustable-height table that is as close to 6' long and 3' wide (seems most folding ones are no wider than 30"). Anybody know of a place to rent one table from? I could probably buy one for the same cost but don't have anywhere to store it afterward.

For those of us who would like to see Alderman MALdonado ousted, I suggest that we 'get on the same page' for the upcoming elections in February if we wish to succeed.

Currently, there are 2 other candidates running against MALdonado. One is Juanita Irizarry and the other is Adam Corona.

The problem with having 2 other opponents is that they could very well "split the vote" thereby allowing MALdonado a win. Yes, I understand that the winner must still secure at least 50% of the vote, and I personally do not wish to see a run-off election (thinking of taxpayer dollars here.)

Remember, the goal is to OUST MALdonado!

My intention with this post is NOT to get into a deep discussion about either candidate, because this is exactly what will lead to a vote split! Bear with me here.... At face value, Irizarry seems way ahead of Corona in terms of community involvement. Also, I spoke with several community leaders that I respect, and they highly recommend Irizarry.
And, one community leader even indicated to me that s(he) has asked Corona to withdraw from the election specifically to avoid a vote-split. If you are not a fan of second-hand information, then I hereby officially ask Adam Corona to withdraw from the election and throw his support behind Irizarry.

So, I suggest that we throw our combined support behind Irazziry. No, I do not work for her. I have never even met her. I just took a quick look at both candidates with info on the Internet and this blog-site. I don't want to over-complicate it. Unless some egregious info surfaces about Irizarry before election day, she's getting my vote. Remember, the goal is to defeat MALdonado. And based on what I am seeing, I think Irazziry is the stronger of the 2 candidates.

Let's do it, together! Let's send MALdonato packing - well deserved and overdue!

@Weidermeier, I completely agree with your assessment that understanding a candidates position on adding more public housing being one of the key issues in this race. Juanita's background in public housing and her history with the development firm Bickerdike coupled with her ties to the GIA political committee(Which has members from many development firms) leads me and many others around me to believe she will indeed press for the expansion of Public Housing.
For the sake of transparency I must say I work on the campaign to elect Corona, but only after having been approached by both candidates personally. I decided to work with Adam as he was more entrenched in the politics of the ward and shared many of my own views. Juanita seemed like a nice person but said less than 20 words the duration of the meeting and lacked a candidates presence. She had a mutual associate of ours do more to try to convince me than she did, which is what the OP's post is reminding me of. The most potent element of her campaign currently is her ties with other politicians, but is it a positive thing when other politicians are controlling your campaign? How genuine is it when a candidate is proped up by outside interests? She seemed sweet enough to have a cup of tea with and discuss the news but I felt that a candidate who feels uncomfortable in trying to find staffers doesn't really seem strong enough to handle the intensity of city hall or resist the demands of other politicians.

Humboldt Park/Wicker Park Boundary?

We are currently looking at a place on Talman and North Ave - i'm not totally sure what neighborhood this puts us in, as HP seems to cover a huge area. I'm wondering about safety, crime, the general neighborhood, traffic etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

That is why....we need an OFFICIAL neighborhood map. It could be superimposed on top of the 77 communities map. This would make a static and legal map so residents could be assured that if $$ was allocated to their neighborhood...that the neighborhood got it instead of it migrating elsewheres.

I think there are approx 200 unofficial neighborhoods. Perhaps wiki unofficial neighborhoods and see what is on that list.

  • We live in the area and it's been dubbed West Bucktown. (Between North and Armitage, Western and California.) Although technically it is Humboldt Park if you are South of Bloomingdale and Logan Square if you are North of Bloomingdale. Whatever you call, we love it and have lived here from 11 years and our raising our three children here. I also own a business in the area.

  • the problem with the 3G now and even the 4 is that they cannot handle the new iphone software, so I've heard, which of course is just another way that apple inadvertently forces customers to get the newest model when they don't need it otherwise. correct me if I'm wrong, Lanny

Transit Oriented Development, Milwaukee/California Community Feedback

There was another thread that I started that got a little long. Thought I'd start a fresh one to house thoughts on the idea of TOD near the California El station, as the developer goes back to the drawing board to work on a revised, scaled-back plan. Here's some recent feedback from the group "Save Our Boulevards" and a link to follow offering a different view.

  • 2221 N. Milwaukee got his feedback from the GGNA:

The GGNA Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAPC) and neighbors who live near 2211 N. Milwaukee Ave met on March 10 with the project team for that address. We reviewed their request for an up zoning from C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development for...

2221 N. Milwaukee got his feedback from the GGNA:

The GGNA Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAPC) and neighbors who live near 2211 N. Milwaukee Ave met on March 10 with the project team for that address. We reviewed their request for an up zoning from C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development for a 7 story building with 135 rental units.
The plans as presented and the request for up zoning to C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development were not regarded favorably by the ZAPC for the following reasons:
1.) The seven story building is too massive and will be completely out of character and scale with the surrounding neighborhood buildings. The ZAPC recommends that the building height be no more than 5 stories with different heights along the street. Higher sections of the building should be closer to the bank and be lower closer to Talman.
2.) The additional car density was also a big concern. This project should not move forward until alley, street traffic and parking exits have been reviewed at a community meeting and changes have been approved by CDOT. This building is one block from Goethe Elementary School where there are already traffic backups and more cars going north on Talman will add to those problems. The alley behind the building will also become congested. There are also not enough parking spaces for both the retail unit(s) on the first floor and for one space per unit, which will cause more parking issues both on Milwaukee and the nearby interior streets. This project is also one block from the Congress Theater that has historically brought in 5,000 plus people, many arriving in cars for events several times a week.
3.) The size of the building will also create problems for surrounding neighbors by blocking sunlight and creating wind tunnels that will adversely affect both pedestrians and bicyclists.

  • 4.) Although a green roof is being planned for the top of the building, the developers said it will not be accessible to residents; only on the third floor. And there is no green space being planned on the street level on a pedestrian zoned street except a few trees...

4.) Although a green roof is being planned for the top of the building, the developers said it will not be accessible to residents; only on the third floor. And there is no green space being planned on the street level on a pedestrian zoned street except a few trees in the parkway. The project team also did not mention any green building standards being used in construction of this building.
5.) The project team agreed to provide 14 affordable housing units, the required 10%, in proportion to the range of apartment types. The ZAPC would like to see those affordable units made a requirement of this project with no donations to the city affordable housing fund allowed.
6.) The project team referred to Plan B of the Milwaukee Ave Plan as a basis for the project height and density. They had no comment when it was pointed out that there was also a Plan A which called for buildings no higher than 4 stories.
7.) The ZAPC needs more clearly detailed dimensional elevations for the project.
We strongly recommend that Alderman Moreno not approve the current zoning request and plans as presented to the group. We would welcome the project team to come back to another ZAPC meeting after making changes in their plans based on the community concerns.

I think there is a news person Susan Leminoin or something like that who would have an interest. She is the one who did the news story about the HEROIN HUT in Garfield Park and her nightly news sstory got it shut down the next day.

It makes no sense city workers would pick up trash like paper and cups and food...and leave the haz mat material behind so children can step on them!!!!

I am serious about that. Do the easy part. Leave the hard part...that is HAZ MAT. HAZARDOUS MATERIALS NEED TO BE REMOVED......!!!!! Does anyone on this blog understand that these needles are HAZARDOUS MATERIALS????

Perhaps the Chicago Doe could come in and take a look and require the Park district to clean up the needes. Email john.kryl@cityofchicago.org and ask. "How should used needles be removed from the Chicago Park District?"

Old Zacatecas restaurant on Richmond/Diversey

Seems like there is a lot of work happening on that building - the exterior was repainted, and the inside is getting gutted. Any ideas what's going to become of the space?

  • Susan S. resident

All reliable information no doubt! :-)

  • Now if only someone would move into that derelict property on Albany and Diversey. What an eyesore! Garbage cans always overflowing, a real rat haven. It's a good looking building and would make a nice restaurant.

Package thiefs Alert

We live on the 1700 block of Washtenaw, and twice in the past few weeks (most recently, yesterday) have been victim to packages stolen off our stoop. These individuals are going so far as to break our gate locks to attain these boxes. Just a warning out there for those early holiday shoppers. Even locks are not stopping them!

  • NFT LS landlord and resident

You can get mychoice through ups. It's $50/year and you can re-route an unlimited number of packages to a ups store to pick up. Otherwise it's $5/package.

  • Sadly, this is extremely common during the holidays. Basically, just assume anything you have sent to your place will be stolen. :(
