Cozy Corner Coffee Window?

I'd read a DNA Info article a few days ago (http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140717/wicker-park/cta-blue-line-renovations-nix-coffee-shops-wicker-park-logan-stations) about the concessions area being pulled from the California station. One of the commenters said it seemed like there were a number of alternative coffee places, but the only one which makes sense for my commute - I'm coming from behind the police station - was Township, and I do not care for their coffee (or their service for said coffee, but that's another show).

I started to wonder if there were any possibility that the to-be-rehabbed Cozy Corner would offer a coffee window. While I initially doubted it would make much sense on the alley side of the business, next to the NB exit - that alley can get pretty ripe - I knew I'd go if they offered it. And then today, I saw new windows on the alley side, and some sort of indented part of the outer wall. DARE I DRREAM, NEIGHBORS? Anybody know anybody who may know if that's even a possibility?

The times I've been to Cozy Corner in the past, people are always coming in for a to-go cup of coffee. The layout was pretty tight in there, though, so I could see some people not wanting to hassle with it. Perhaps with the expanded space and new layout there will be ample opportunity to stop in for coffee, even if it's not an outside window. The new openings installed on the alley side of the addition are definitely only for natural light/trash exit unfortunately.

I believe Cozy Corner has always offered coffee service @ the counter for to-go cups. Can anyone confirm this? No need for a window if they keep this up after reopening.

Any bright ideas about how to complain about city subcontractors?

There are subcontractors who are doing city work on my block and have consistently screwed things up. Broke my front walkway last week, and today got a piece of heavy machinery stuck on the new covers to the new plumbing that they did on our block, plainly damaging them in the bargain. The phone number on the side of their truck is for a non-working number (Sumit Construction in Skokie -- there are 4 Sumit Constructions in Chicago) and the workers are completely surly. I've called 311 as has my neighbor, but is there anything more we can do to try to get the city to pay attention to this?

  • Sarah,

Are they doing water main work? I'm guessing they are.

  • If it is Watermain work, which again I'm guessing it is (I use to work at Dept of Water and Sumit Construction is one of the main subcontractors that did this work), you should email Thomas Powers. Tom Powers is the head of the Dept of Water, whenever he got a complaint via email from a citizen or the Alderman office, he would send it to me and we would have the damage taken care of right away and would notify the sub. You can contact him at tpowers@cityofchicago.org

Humboldt Park - Park management

What's up with the park? No garbage cans, baseball fields in bad shape. Where and how is the park spending its funds? Especially with new events like Riot Fest that are providing additional funds. How is the Park manager (Cynthia Rosario) and supervisor (Jesus Perez) taking care of issues and concerns? And if they are not going to do anything about it, how do we go about replacing them?

  • Thank you all for the feedback! It's good to hear that more garbage carts are on the way and I will look into joining the next park district board meeting on august 21st.

  • Sonia Mercado Ruiz Sol Lucet

The bathroom trip is inevitable but scary!! I am not a clean freak but the bathrooms are either flooded or dirty in every corner from the ceiling to the inside of the toilet!! It saddens me that our children are treated this way; what message are we sending our kids?

Martin, you joined some Humboldt Park District Board, right? What happened with that? Also, is Smith Park in Humboldt Park, not area but in the same town or political designation? Do they share the same alderman and if so, are both parks in competition for resources?

  • I currently live in this area... So exciting!!!

  • I live right near there, too, and have been watching this building transform over the last several months. It's looking great. Can't say I'm big on the idea of increasing housing density there, but it doesn't look like the building could house a huge number of units, and it will be great to have some new business activity on that stretch. "A restaurant, a furniture store, a brewery, an antique store" sounds like a pretty decent start!

As a side note, I went to take a look at the LS one last weekend; there was someone else there hauling away a huge stack of at least 8 books. The only stuff left was garbage. It's just an open box, so I realize there aren't any rules. I wasn't going to hassle the guy or make assumptions about his needs. But please be courteous, leave some for your neighbors, and contribute to the box if you can.

I've put a lot of good books in the LS box near Lula's. I always hope they'll go to someone who appreciates them and not a hoarder. If people return them after they're done, there will always be some in there.

Funston Elementary

I just found out my child will be attending Funston Elementary this year. Does anyone know about this school or have an opinion good or bad? It is not anywhere near our home so we are debating whether or not to call CPS about this?

  • Is this for K? According to CPS, there are still spots available at a few elementary schools: http://cpsoae.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=173111&type=d

On that list, I'd investigate McPherson.

I'd give Brentano a call and try to get in for a tour (773.534.4100). We're starting our son there in the fall and I've spent a lot of time at the school. The teachers are warm, caring and smart; the school is orderly; and the principal is great. We're excited to have this great neighborhood school in our hood.

Increased loitering at Armitage/California

Does anyone know the story behind the group that's been hanging out with increasing frequency at California and Armitage? In front of the bank, and sometimes behind it. Young adults. They're not waiting for the bus...and have been hanging out a lot more often.

  • Please call the police and report them. There was a mugging near there Monday night with two younger african american men as the suspects. We all need to be each other's eyes and ears and report any suspicious activity. The more calls to 911, the higher the patrol rate and likely they will chose a new location. Please report it.

Nanny Share/Child Care Provider

I am seeking in home child care for my 10 month old niece. Our needs are 30ish hours per week with a budget of $200/week. Anyone have a nanny share opening or any thoughts? I know it's a tall order.

  • I see, then that seems more reasonable.

  • Even with a nanny share, this is pretty poor income. You can find nannies that cheap, but you're going to get what you pay for. Also, Joannainuptown - that's the going rate for a decently experienced nanny of one child, not two or more.

Even with a nanny share, this is pretty poor income. You can find nannies that cheap, but you're going to get what you pay for. Also, Joannainuptown - that's the going rate for a decently experienced nanny of one child, not two or more.

Many parents don't understand that a nanny is not a "full time babysitter" - a nanny (that you're not paying 7 dollars an hour) is going to be someone who assists you in raising your family and keeping your house in order whether it's helping clean the house or run the occasional errand, etc.

The fact that some people are willing to entrust the upbringing of their children to the lowest bidder is mind boggling to me.

$200/week is a rather low budget even for someone willing to do a nanny share. If the currently-paying family is even allowing / comfortable with their nanny entering a share, they may well want some sort of a discount or even a matched rate - dropping this poor nanny to something like ~13/hr for watching two kids (this is well below the going rate for anyone with experience).

Then of course there is the term "30ish", but on a fixed budget. This is a red flag for any prospective nanny. When it's 38 hours, does the family still only have $200 to spend? This may not be OP - but many parents who sound like OP can't / won't / don't pay more...

I don't mean to disparage OP - her available budget is what it is and that can't be helped - it's hard getting by especially in this city. I just think this is a taller order than most people realize.

Was wondering if anyone else heard gunshots early this morning? My husband and I were woken up this morning by them and could hear them from our alley for over the course of at least 15 minutes. I was so half asleep that I don't know what time it was, I just know that shortly after, the sun began to rise. Late last night we noticed two bullet holes height the cubed glass on the side of our building - 3rd story. Thankfully only the outside of the cube was punctured, but I think I would've noticed his before. Did anyone hear gunshots over the weekend or on Monday around Mozart and North? Thanks!

I thought I heard gun shots around 1-2am on Monday. My wife were awake and we heard about 4-5 gunshots. I looked out the window and saw nothing and I didn't hear police sirens afterwards. It has been a couple of years since we heard gunshots on the block. 11 years ago it was common around the Burger King especially on the summer weekends.

Coach house is legal?

Is it legal to build a coach house on top of your garage, and use it for rental income? Do you know where to find the City of Chicago laws pertaining to this type of structure? We see several of them in the neighborhood, but were not sure about attempting this ourseleves. We can definitely use the extra income!!

  • New ones were banned in 1957, the ones you still see are grandfathered in. It's too bad, coach houses are much more appealing than basement apartments.

  • AnnaWilson Anna

Yeah, I went through the hassle of talking to several contractors and went to the building permit office and was told NOPE! If a coach house exists then it's OK but we're not allowed to build a new one, even if you knock down your detached garage and replace it with a coach house. Lame.

  • Even if new coach houses weren't explicitly banned, you probably would not be able to due to zoning restriction regarding number of units on the lot and total finished sq footage.

Tony's Spoiled Chicken

Spoiled chicken again from Tony's on Armitage. I know it can happen anywhere, but it has only ever happened to me at Tony's. So, you know, statistics. Grrrrr, poo. That's as dramatic as my rage gets about this kind of stuff. I do want to put some gentle pressure on them to step up their game.

She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

Large male Airedale terrier mix looking for a loving forever home.

I've been volunteering at an animal shelter nearby and fell in love with a dog but I'm not able to give him a home because of my crazy schedule and living situation.

He is 7 and really sweet natured, though probably best without other pets in the house, since he's always been the only pet. He is great with people and would make a great companion dog. He has some minor medical needs but nothing too difficult to maintain.

The only thing is that he is about 80+ lbs and probably needs an owner who can handle such a large dog. Other than that this gentle giant would make a wonderful, quiet and loyal companion.

  • What shelter is he in? Often times shelters work with certain rescues they have relationships with. You could also try reaching out to One Tail At A Time in the city- they are a great organization and will provide all supplies to anyone that can foster him!

1050 N Spaulding

heard some commotion outside this multi unit bldg. Saw they called police twice and an argument with a young guy and some family members. Got a little hectic with loud voices then it settled down !

  • Clee: There has been a lot of "clean-up" done in this area. If you have eyes on a repetitively problematic building, you may want to get more involved with CAPS (Beat 1121's meeting is coming up on the 1st Thursday of August). Especially if you own property nearby.

compost material (Bread??)

I love pure vegetable compost material. Can one use old baked bread in with vegetable material as opposed to meat material??

  • f5

Some people discourage it because it can attract rats.

  • sly-3 donkey wrangler to the stars

if you're composting worms, i would avoid doing so, as the bread absorbs moisture that the worms need. however, if your compost is rodent-proof - http://cwmi.css.cornell.edu/nuisance.pdf - then, let 'er rip.

open hydrants?

I live near Rockwell and Courtland and there has been an open hydrant for at least 12 plus hours. I called 311 last night and this morning. Would it be worth calling the fire department? How long do these typically take to close?

Thanks!

  • cortman NW IN raised / Chicago res since '03

    Peter W -
I agree with most of your statement. I do not know the individual personally, nor have I ever seen them in the act of opening the hydrant.

  • It's open again. 10 PM. And I live in a garden apartment right at the intersection and have previously been flooded through our front window so this is not good.

Rockwell and LeMoyne disturbance 9:15p ish

Domestic issue in the Lucha building on the s.w. corner. Confirmed with the responding officers. About 10 cars were at the incident and I have to say that is a welcome sight.
Thank you CPD.

Thank you for posting this as I'm at Rockwell & Potomac and was wondering where the speeding cops cars down Rockwell were headed.

Neighborhood Dog Barking Constantly

First - I love animals, which is why my main concern here is to help this dog.

The barking signals to me that the dog may be neglected (lack of attention (playtime, love, etc) from owner). Or could simply be lack of training and socialization, but this just goes back to neglect.

Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the help.

ChicagoCats - The dog is a Scottish terrier who barks from inside the owners house and out a top floor window that looks out onto the sidewalk/street.

  • Good luck. I used to have Scotties and it isn't typical for them to bark all the time. They are alert dogs that like to keep watch, and mine would bark when they saw people, but certainly not constantly.

There may be an underlying behavior or health issue here. Dogs with separation anxiety will bark constantly when left alone. Sometimes the owner's are not even aware of this issue until told by a neighbor.

Another issue is senior dogs with dementia type issues can bark far too often. I have a 16 year old dog and in the last six months or so she has really increased her barking. She's having some doggie dementia type issues.

Just wanted to mention a couple of these possibilities as may help the conversation w/ your neighbor.

Humboldt Haus?

Any idea on when Humboldt Haus will open there deli or is this turning into another liquor store as evidenced by the by liquor sign?

  • Squeak-O Your friendly neighborhood Gladys Kravitz.

They are not running just another liquor store. The selection is really good, quality wines from small producers and a nice craft beer selection priced well. I stopped in and had a nice chat with the owner. He's looking forward to getting the deli open but things with the city and building capital take time. Stop in and talk to the man behind the counter before passing judgment.

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

I talked to a owner some time ago, still no deli, I think the sign sucks! I had big hopes for this place, first just a liquor store, deli did not open in February and now this ghetto sign. Just what the neighborhood doesn't need. I talked to the man behind the counter so I guess I can pass judgment.

I have to give a shout out to the cops this morning

I read a lot about how unresponsive the CPD is in our neighborhood, but this morning at about 6 am I heard what seemed like 6 shots near my home (1500 block of Talman), and called 911. The CPD were there within 5 minutes and did a thorough check. I felt a little sheepish because I'm never 100% sure what shots sound like, but I felt I had to call. They were fast and on it and great, and I felt safer as a result. And I feel like it's only fair to note it when they do a good job, too.

Lawn guy needed Central Park and Wrightwood.

Need a guy to do routine mowing at my building. Anyone know a guy who could come every few weeks? Looking to spend $15-20 bucks per visit. Thanks!

  • Hey Chicago Al, are you on the southwest corner of that intersection? If so, what's the plan? Your building is looks well maintained and yet seems perpetually vacant.

  • $15, seems very low, good luck..

success contesting speed camera citations?

I'm interested to hear if anyone has successfully contested a speed camera citation.

I live near Clemente High where they've installed cameras both on Division and Western. I couldn't figure out why I'd see the lights flash over and over as cars passed seeming to be driving at a normal rate of speed. Then I got two tickets in the mail: it's a school zone and speed limit is 20mph "when children are present."

First of all, I am not a speeder but I've never seen a car slow down to 20mph on Western unless there is heavy traffic. If you don't maintain the flow of traffic you're liable to cause traffic problems (not to mention the road rage you'd incite).

Second, does anyone know the law? Does "when children are present" mean when they're in sight, or does it generally mean when children are in the area i.e. in the school building?

Either way, seems to me these cameras are just slapping drivers with fines without having any positive impact on behavior.

Not sure if the Inspector General also handles this? Not sure if Procurement handles this? Not sure if CDOT handles this. Typically many departments can get involved.

Chicagoans need to stand up and go after all the vendors who are abusive to us. Why should they get paid handsome salaries or lucrative contracts and then we suffer? We pay $$ but we also waste time, and we get angry.

If a system is set up that exploites us; we need to fight back through the legal channels.

Did everyone see the front page of the SUNDAY TRIBUNE? The Redflex camera scandal is gaining momentum. Lets hope some of these white collar criminals go to JAIL....why should corruption in Illinois and Chicago be so easily forgiven by the taxpayers who are being taken advantage of?????

It is time for us to take a stand and put them in jail where they belong.

Cheap small-batch ice cream!

Hi, I'm Ben. For the last year I've been running a recipe development project. I make ice cream and my list of taste testers buy it at cost and give me their feedback.

I've refined some pretty delicious flavors, like buttercream with oatmeal raisin cookie chunks, pistachio orange ricotta with chocolate covered cannoli shell pieces, and my current flavor, horchata with caramel ribbons.

Every once in a while, I have to fill empty spots on my list, and Everyblock is a great community. There aren't many spots, so if you're interested, read more information below and sign up right away!

Thanks Ben.... I will definitely log on to see you what you got! Good for you, by the way!

  • Awesome! You made my Saturday night, can't wait to try some of your ice cream

  • Ben Etherington Small batch ice cream

And that's it! I filled all the open spots on my list while EB was down. If you'd like an early notice for the next time I'm looking for taste testers, sign up for the newsletter at newsletter.bigspoonchicago.com

Anyone know where to pick up New York Times, on Saturday evening or Sunday morning, in Logan?

  • You can get it at the Starbucks at the corner of California and Logan.

  • J.J. Peppers also carries it or at least they use to.
