Roberto Maldonado

Is this guy any good? I have been wondering what he does for HP and I can't figure it out...does anyone know his email address? It's not on his website..which is weird.

  • Robert Terra Works in Chicago Local Politics

It's unfortunate to see so many vocal members of a constituency dissatisfied with the level and quality of service that is currently being provided. But where ever there is someone dissatisfied with the conditions they face there is also the potential for change. For those of you interested in a potential change of pace candidate, who has experience as a Union member, a Business owner and a city services worker and aims to unite the entirety of the 26th ward take a look at Adam Corona.

I recently attended a 7-8 grade volleyball game at the Aspira middle school campus on Leland Ave. Students were out of control, foul mouth, disrespectful and security guards were oblivious. Must be the "norm" for this school. Very sad! Stay away, terrible atmosphere.

The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

http://www.useful-community-development.org/re-zoning-opposition.html
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate law/zoning/proposed_rezoning_change.htm
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/zoning/object_neighbor_zoning.htm

Let's keep this discussion ongoing on this site until this is resolved. Please tell others.

Since their all active gang members It's wiser to take the loss as they laugh. ..... you should be very concerned with who resides in these structures? If you live near one. Then you cannot own anything nice because you'll be surrounded by degenerates that won't even blink about taking it..... say bye-bye to your nice neighborhood. The pastors connection to the ocasio crooks is very interesting? Has there been any FBI investigation on that? Do churches pay taxes? I don't think they do?That entire family should get locked up!

Mozzarella sticks??

been dying for some crispy, gooey mozzarella sticks in Logan square. Any suggestions?? Those soggy balls at boiler room don't count, and I haven't seen them on any menus nearby- I gotta be missing something!

  • Dante's on Milwaukee next to Crown Liquors at Diversey, Kimball and Milwaukee

  • It's not Logan Square but Roots pizza on Chicago has amazing mozzarella sticks.

  • Second Dante's. They are sort of square shaped mozzarella sticks, substantial, with a good crisp on them.

Looking for foster home for kittens

I have 3 friendly kittens in my yard. Looking for someone to house them and socialize them while we look for a home for them. I'm full up on cats already or I would take them in. They appear to be about 3 months old. They are very playful and seem healthy.

  • They're really cute! Thanks so much for posting, PR. If you can find them a foster home, we should be able to put them on the waiting list for admittance to Tree House. Hopefully, someone can accommodate until then.

  • any chance you could put out one of those disposable litter boxes by their food and see if they show any interest in using it? more folks might be willing to open doors to let them in if they look like they could be easily housebroken.

Hi good folks of EB!

The shelter is (again) in desperate need of the following items if you're able to donate (used items are more than ok, they just need to be clean).

I'll be dropping off the donations on Sat Oct 25, so there's plenty of time. I can pick up at your house or you can drop off at mine (near North and California Aves - message me for phone number and address).

Here's the list:
- dog or cat beds
- towels, blankets, anything clean, warm and fuzzy they can lay on
- treats of any kind
- dog and cat food (for the pet food pantry so people in need can keep their beloved animals and those animals stay out of these kinds of kill shelters)
- toys: chew toys (like nyla bones or kongs) and non-stimulant stuffed toys (no squeekers please - gets them too riled up in their cages)
- puppy potty training pads (there's a huge shortage of workers/volunteers, so they don't get walked often. If they have these, it means they don't have to sit in their pee/feces and it helps reduce the spread of disease.
- cleaning products of any kind to help keep the place disinfected
- heating pads (for kittens, bunnies or even the little squirrels they help nurse back to health)
- leftover dog or cat medicines or vitamins

I was just there on Monday and would love to get them stocked up on towels/beds etc so all the animals have somewhere warm and comfortable to lay (it really helps reduce stress for them).

I've attached some pictures from the last run I did for donations from you great folks! You can see the animals really love the blankets and beds! :)

And if you're thinking of adopting or want to foster some of these sweet babies, hit me up! More foster homes = we can get more of these animals out of kill shelters!

Thanks so much folks!

Thanks Kitkat! Yeah, Humblebar is super cool!

You guys are super awesome! I am AGAIN BLOWN AWAY by your generosity!!! I miswrote drop offs at Humblebar - you can drop off there until Friday afternoon around 5 or so. I'll be doing the pickup then. Sat the donations will be delivered. Thank you folks! Super cool of you!!! And thanks to Humblebar - they're animal lovers too and so nice to host the drop offs!

I don't understand why ever time this Mcdonalds has a promotional event for kids, the signs are only in Spanish. Do they not want any English speaking kids at these events? This is an ongoing thing for this Mcdonalds and I find it very insulting.
Does anyone else think this is wrong??

Actually, Sarah, my family went to Germany from Spain during the Inquisition; they came to the US after spending several nights hiding the the Black Forest during Kristalnacht. Most of my mother's extended family were murdered in Aushwitz

  • Well, snap. Godwin's Law has reared its ugly head.

My guess is that English was likely the third or fourth language your probably well-educated Grandparents acquired, am I right? Quite a different kettle of fish than a present-day immigrant from a developing country who is working two or three minimum-wage jobs. And whose relatives may well have been murdered by narco terrorists or militias.

The hike around Lake Geneva can be beautiful. The full trip is about 26 miles and took us about 8 hours at a quick pace and with a lunch stop. The section nearest downtown Lake Geneva going counterclockwise is the easiest and it gets more difficult as you get to the Fontana side of the lake, although easily passable. I just don't think there's as much foot traffic over there.

Devil's Lake is really fantastic, too. But, that's about 3 hours away.

And, even though you specified WI, we recently went to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and had a great few hours hiking on the beach and trails. The trails there range from easy to difficult, 1 - 8 (or more) miles. I think that was 1 hour 20 minutes to drive out mid-day on a Saturday.

  • Just north of Lake Geneva is the southern unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest. There are many great hiking and biking trails. I was camping there a few weeks ago...Just beautiful!

Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

wow. Just wow. Yeah so I've rescued bunches of animals and have taken excellent care of them for many many years, All in all probably a dozen dogs have lived out their full or almost full lives with me and countless cats, Ive spent a really large portion of my income as an adult on proper vet care for multiple shelter animals,
but I need to go to a shelter and see what happens.
I've adopted cats that specifically had been indoor outdoor cats and the shelter needed adopters who could continue that, so that in itself shows that contrary to some postings above, there is no hard fast rule in this area.

Speaking in a very broad sense, there is a difference between calling child protective when a child is abused and taking someone's cat because they are trying to transition it to indoor/outdoor living. However, here comes the brigade with their facts and judgements and anyone who does it differently is a bad person and will be shamed and ridiculed under the guise of being informed by the authority on the subject.
Wouldn't matter the subject, this is how it goes....

I'm just saying I think that's out of bounds. So I'm breaking the law allowing my cat to go outside. oops. Please always tuck away my handle so you can bash me every time you see me post now, since once you've developed your judgement and opinion that's how you always relate to someone. The internet is an unfortunate place where rather than sharing ideas and experiences there's always someone who knows what everyone else SHOULD be doing.

  • I just get tired of the broad brushing and attitudes that it's ok to disparage people who don't ascribe (?) to your every belief and it happens double time in forums and its not conducive to cultivating dialogue nor is it neighborly.

Myself and another member here mentioned we allow our cats outdoor privileges and that didn't slow down the insulting characterizations. If you think someone is wrong in their choices just shame em? Come on!
And I'm trying to have a bit broader discussion than only about this one cat. It's unnecessary to get upset and shake your finger at someone online or become distraught and angry about a situation you're not even in.

I think we can support the poster who started the thread, and the cat in question, and a dialogue...that is what I'm getting at. But first that would have to be the goal I guess.

Deck construction folks?

Hi all. I'm looking to re-do my backyard deck and was wondering if anyone had some good folks they could point me towards? Yelp seems less than helpful and Angie's List is largely bought and paid for. Many thanks in advance.

  • If you need just 'shoring up' until the spring, I have an excellent workman neighbor who may be able to help in that aspect until you can have what you need done. (He is presently doing an amazing metal 2 story back porch, replacing a wood one)
(Workman can just be the most frustrating thing....)

New California stop is really pretty, gotta say

There was a crowd of reporters and guys in suits this morning getting on the revamped calf. blue line stop. not that many getting on, so i had time to snap a few pix. they did a gorgeous job stripping and restoring the old doors and it really looks great...

  • heated waiting shelters is good

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Unfortunately, heated waiting shelters is not new. They had that before. I wonder what percentage of CTA stations only have one exit from each platform. I cannot even think of another blue line stop that does (on the north side at least). There's a reason that's such a rarity. I can only imagine the public outcry if one of those stairwells got blocked for some reason.

Depressed by Traffic Jams?

Is it me, or is every way that one can drive into the city from Humboldt Park is now congested due to all kinds of construction projects. I have been so frustrated lately.

I try to take the train/bus as much as possible, but sometimes I need to drive. If folks have found good solutions for car routes, please share. I had pretty good success taking California to Roosevelt into downtown this morning.

Traffic has been worse than usual.

Plus California cuts off going south before Lake St, you are stuck taking Lake east, or Western/Sacramento south.

Be careful and try not to get aggravated, we are all sitting in similar traffic.

Any local rescue or similar that accept dry cat food donations (*opened bags*). I've gone through a few partial bags of food while switching my cat to something new. Rather than throw out perfectly good cat food, I'd like to at least try and donate.

One container is a mix of 3 flavors of Nature's Variety Instinct Grain Free (Duck, Rabbit, Chicken). Maybe 2 or 3 lbs worth. And the other is a 5 lbs. or so bag of the same brand, salmon flavor. None of them sat well with my cat for whatever reason.

Halloween Decorations 2014

Hello neighbors! Just wanted to say, it is great to see more seasonal décor going up. If you have never thought about doing so, remember that it helps the overall look/appearance of the neighborhood. It may seem like a small thing, but it makes the n'hood look more inviting. Please rake leaves, pickup trash, put up some lights, Halloween or autumnal décor(if you're into that sort of thing). Tend to shrubbery, trees and gardens. And if you have a porch light, please use it. Lights can deter a lot of mischief. Let's keep the neighborhood on track of looking great, as we have been doing!!

Anyone in the know know what happened or is going to happen with the Ronny's bar conversion that was planned by some of the Longman and Eagle/Parsons folks? The company seems to do door service and installation. The service tech that came lives in the south Irving Park neighborhood and said the company was trying to expand in this area, and that he would get calls for the area. But I cannot speak for their installation service.

LOST GRAY CAT

We haven't seen our gray cat since around noon on Saturday October 5th. He is all gray except for 2-3 small patches of white on his chest. He is VERY friendly and vocal. He also has allergies and without medicine his left eye will be watery.

He is very loved and we would be heart broken if we lose him.

No collar but he is chipped.
Any help would be great appreciated. Phone number is 708-908-0055 call or text any time of day.

Comcast outage?

Anybody else in the 1700 block area of Kedzie have flashing lights on their modem? Started about 2:30 PM today,

  • Best Buy has modems you can buy to replace the rental for about $100 or less -- you'll earn it back in less than a year. And yes, use a different solution for wifi and phone -- better options are available.

  • Jim Mitchell 11-year Logan Square resident

If you buy a modem, you will have to call Comcast to get it registered so that they recognize the device, but that's a minor inconvenience and takes five minutes.

I'm guessing after writing this, I will probably see them all the time.

Vintage Record Player Console Repair

Hi Neighbors! I inherited a vintage RCA Victor Console Record player from the mid 60s. Parts of it work, and parts don't. I don't know what I'm doing, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of shops who might be able to take a look at this.

If anyone knows of a place that does house calls that would be great, because the entire unit is about 100lbs.

I did find an old thread on EveryBlock and some people recommended a few such as Deltronics, 20th Centruy and Mina's TV & Video, the last of which will come and pick up. Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks!

  • Anthony's Electronic Service on Irving Park and Broadway has fixed two turn tables for me. Just read the reviews.

  • Tanner at Uncharted books just had his console record player fixed. He said he knows a guy that fixes this type of record player. You might want to stop in there and ask him.

Does anyone have a map of affordable housing buildings in the city?
Do some areas have more than others?

Weather it is Glenn's explanation or Colin's where the truth lies, or a bit of both, it does not explain how anyone involved in the process, from the developer, to the ploicy makers to the funding agencies, can justify spending 2.4 million building a six flat that may appraise at slightly over 1 million the day it is finished. Paradoxically, this actually helps the NIMBY people, as the more expensive affordable housing units are, the fewer can be built. Consider that if $205,000 of public funds goes into a unit of $405,000 (based on the proposed budget), the same public money can be used to build 2 units at $305,000 each, or 4 units at $255,000, costs that are not out of reach for a private developer.

German Shepard mix hit by car/seeking owner

A German Shepard mix (black and dark brown, medium/large with blue canvas collar & no tags) was hit by a car at 11:45 Friday at Humboldt blvd. & Bloomingdale. Was taken by the driver to Chicago Veterinary Emergency Center at 3123 n. Clybourn. Another medium sized tan dog wearing a harness/collar was witnessed near the accident but ran away. Seeking any information about the owner. We don't know how the dog is doing yet but would like to reunite him with the owner. Please reply if you have any information.

This is a stretch, but there is a building under construction at whipple and Armitage that recently added two German Shepards to 'police' the place over night. They even added signs on the side of the building that say that 'survivors will be prosecuted' if someone breaks in. I came home after midnight earlier this week and the dogs were on the balcony which has yet to have any guardrails installed. Given that kids break into this building to tag it, the plywood door is almost broken down on a daily basis do the dog could have gotten out super easily. These dogs shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Free chicken feed (spent brewing grains - malted barley, no hops used)

Free chicken feed to anyone who'll come pick it up. I've got about five plastic shopping bags filled with it (3 frozen, 2 in the fridge soon to be frozen). I usually save them for a friend who has chickens but I need the room and I won't see them soon enough. I'm in Logan Square, Mozart and Dickens. Send a PM to arrange pick-up. Sorry for the blurry pic, it was getting dark and I was cleaning up. These grains can also be used to make dog biscuits, etc., too. There are no hops in these grains, they are added to the beer later in the process (hops can be harmful to animals...).

  • Generating a lot of spent grain today if you want some, just let me know how much! I'm near Saint Louis & Schubert, and it should be ready in the mid afternoon.

  • I'll take a grocery bags worth. Send a message to erinlynn 60618 @ gmail . Thanks!

Dog Walkers stay off my grass?

Is it wrong of me to tell people walking their beloved dogs to stay off of my beloved front lawn? Even if the poop is picked up by the owner(which sometimes it's not) is urine bad for the grass? I don't know how many times I am walking out the front door and I see dog walkers with one or two of their furry friends on my front lawn and they don't say anything to me. They just keep going about their business.

Do people walking their dogs think this is just ok? Would animal lovers be offended if I shooed them away?

In agree with all the posts that state the parkway is city property and is fair game for dog walkers, but when I look down the street, only a small percentage of the homes/apts have a bright green and well maintained parkway. People that are walking their dog could take that in to consideration and avoid the few parkways that show the building owner is making a strong effort to make it look nice. At the very least, one could discourage his dog from peeing in a spot where the grass is beginning to look unhealthy. I think the yellow spots come from everyone letting their dogs pee in the same spots to mark territory. Just a friendly suggestion that could keep gardeners and dog owners happy.

i've seen the most amazing thing in the nyc/brooklyn area ...

(some) people actually train their dogs to go to the curb and stoop to poop with their butts overhanging the street so that waste is deposited in the gutter.

hence the expression: "Curb your dog."
