Lost underweight male German Shepherd

My landlord has lost her male German Shepherd. The dog is very underweight and last seen on Wednesday night in the 3600 W Oakdale block. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Luci in Rogers Park Dog Lover, living in Rogers Park for 26 years

Do you think some dog loving soul took him in and is just keeping him as their own?
I can't imagine Deuce still wandering around the neighborhoods.. I really hope he is in someone's home being showered with lots of love, affection, and attention..

  • Kathleen Boyle Your dog's best friend! (Taking real estate break)

After all of the stuff posted on here, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody just kept him, rather than return him to a neglectful home. Kelly, you are a very kind person to put in this kind if care and effort for somebody else's dog.

My mesage to Rahm is "You know what ???? We have listened and we have seen what you've been working for. Our eyes are open. We need a person that will listen to us. After going on a rampage closing schools, Closing mental health centers like a madman,, erecting red light and speed cameras giving away over 80 million dollars of . TIF money to depaul University a private school to build a gymnasium. collecting over 500 m i l l i o n s of dollars ticketing hardworking Chicagoans struggling to make it in this economy with the cameras. Your a bully and the people know it.

Oh and by the way,
You stated the cameras were for safety reasons not solely for revenue raising ,,, and yet you fly right through red lights like if you were the President of the United States, Almost hitting pedestrians ((( the video is on line google it and see for yourself)))

My fellow Chicagoans,
If we make the same mistake by not voting like we did with Bruce Ruiner, than were screwed !!!!

Are we gonna sit back and let Mayor 1% keep at it screwing us one way after another ???

I am on the fence about the funding for the stadium but I don't see any bad intention here. If it works, it brings back support to DePaul's men and women's basketball teams and would increase interest in these games again. Rosemont is just too much of a trek and I would hate to try to recruit young players to go traipse across the City to play there. A new stadium gives the coaches a better chance to recruit local prep school players to stay in Chicago. If attendance increases, the hospitality industry will be happy. $173 million is a ton of money but they may be banking on a jolt to the local economy and Chicago school.

  • The only action you need is to turn out the vote for the runoff to be sure Rahm doesn't get re-elected. You need to vote. Get others to vote.

Bruce Rauner makes cuts at ceasefire

There's no better way to ensure the return of gang violence, then to silence the voices that are able to reason with those who perpetuate the violence. The murder rate is about to go Chicago, count on it.

Didn't Chicago drop funding for this program in favor of other strategies back in 2013?
The state is broke and EVERY dollar spent needs to be reviewed. This program seems not to be reducing the gun violence in the city. We cant afford to support programs that cant PROVE their worth. There are many cuts to be expected as the state tries to live within the record high revenue it collects. I agree that perhaps we need to consider another way as Ceasefire has had a chance and we have an increasing violence problem.

You can thank your friends who just HAD to vote "against Quinn". Now we have cuts to education, cuts to medicaid, cuts to programs for the disabled, cuts to income tax for the wealthy, shifting public transit funds from Chicago to southern Illinois. I wish good health to Mike Madigan, as he is our only hope

  • EastHumboldtNeighbor resident since 07

Illinois, unlike the Fed, can not print money. The structural deficit is in the billions. Any governor-elect (including Quinn) would have had to make cuts. We need a mirror, not a whipping boy. We voted for unfunded promises for decades.

Looking to get involved

Hello neighbors! I just moved to Humboldt Park and, as a journalism student, I want to know what is going on in my community. What stories would you (as members of the community) like to see covered?

Thank you

  • Look into why the success on Division stops at the entrance to H. Park

  • How about looking into why Humboldt Park residents re-elected the most ineffectual alderman (Maldonado) into office again. As a neighbor living next to the 26th ward, I'm appalled and disappointed by Humboldt Park residents....

Logan Square Trash Collection - Stalled because of snow/ice?

Is it just me or has it been a long time since trash has been collected.. Is this typical when there's this much snow/ice? .. I keep thinking "they'll get it this week", but our alley is quickly filling up with trash, some of which has been there for several weeks now..

  • Not specific to LS, but a newsletter from Waguespack a few weeks ago included this:

"The snow and ice has made it difficult for garbage and recycling pickup in many alleys. City garbage crews are navigating the alleys but Waste Management has stated that they are not servicing some alleys due to snow and ice piled up on blue bins. We are working with the City to make sure that the garbage and recycling is picked up."

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

Our pickups (recycle and garbage) have both been on schedule. But if the dumpsters are blocked in with snow, they left them. I tried to budge them, but it is nearly impossible to pull them out of a snow bank. I shoveled out one of each kind and they were picked up as scheduled. After the big snow, some alleys were extremely bad with no shoveling-out done, so I wouldn't blame them to skip those!

I can't tell you who told me because he/she is close to Mike (owner) of Riot Fest. The news is sad (at least to me), but apparently true. It looks like Mike from Riot Fest has had enough of Alderman Maldonado and is moving the festival out of the neighborhood. The person wouldn't tell me the exact reason why, but suggested BS politics that Mike's sick of playing with the Aldeman.

Have any of you heard anything of the sort? If any of you know him because he supposedly lives in the neighborhoid, please ask him?!?!?

WHERE DID THEY COME UP WITH THIS INFORMATION?!? I went back and read both threads again and found no statement of "good riddance" in “Riot Fest to Leave Humboldt Park?”! All the other comments were about CONCERN alright! CONCERN about the fest leaving and how they want it to stay. ONLY ONE PERSON had a negative comment and that person comments that change for the good in HP is bad?!? In the thread “Riot Fest Needs Our Help,”. Where did do get "drawing a mix of 34 comments but fell short of a definitive answer."! Not one comment was negative about RF and most supported it. Neighbors wrote about having meetings with the Alderman, Park District and RF promoters to get them to commit to HP! A very definitive answer of "HP neighbors want RF to stay in a huge way" to me!!!
DNAinfo. did you think the citizens of HP would let you down play this most important event in their neighborhood? I will be waiting to read your retraction and/or apologies to your readers in the HP community. Have a nice day.

Hi Darryl Holiday, the story did answer the question of RF leaving! It is great to know that RF will be in HP straight from the source. Thank you. What you wrote about the EB threads is what upset me and others. Both threads showed over whelming support for RF in HP but you reported the very opposite. In the thread I started, neighbors wrote about how they wanted to help RF stay in HP and thanked me! Some how you reported this thread " fell short of a definitive answer" as to neighbors wanting RF to stay! The other thread, 40 neighbors comments were in in favor about RF staying in HP and only one was negative. You reported "responses ranging from concern to good riddance"! I understood that to mean 50/50 in responses and zero in support! I repeat "I PREFER DNAinfo." for local news. What you wrote about these threads were not supported by the source. You want to interview supporters of RF in HP? Pick a large location because I think you will be surprised how many of my neighbors will want to talk to you.

  • Darryl Holliday DNAinfo Logan Sq./Humboldt Park reporter

I think we may have had a misunderstanding, Rak. I meant there was no "definitive answer" as to whether RF was staying or going — not whether neighbors wanted RF to stay. I know plenty of people on both sides of that fence to be honest but it's not something I would take a stand on in a story. Glad you prefer DNA though! I'll take that and will be on my way :)

Everyday it takes me 1hr 40min to get to and from the South Loop. It's ridiculous. I blame the fact they got rid of the Western Xpress and than add to it that Ventra sucks (takes like 5 taps to get it to say go). The commute to and from work is killing me. By car, the drive is only 15-20min max, but as I said by bus its like 1hr 40min. so I'm looking for different options. The Homan/Kimball bus runs awesome and I was thinking I can take that to the Kedzie/Lake Green Line Station and take the Green Line to Roosevelt. However, I'm wondering how safe it is? Does anyone know? I'm a little white girl just fyi. Please let me know. I want my life back.

The original posters question was how safe is Kedzie and Lake. Its the West Side! Its definitely not the safest place! I would never be standing around at Lake and Kedzie or Roosevelt and Kedzie or Homan and Roosevelt during the day and especially after dark. I used to work at 43rd and Ashland in the early 2000s and I tried to convince myself how safe it was until one day a bunch of masked men with guns walked in and robbed us violently. After that shady neighborhoods never "felt" safe to me again. Don't trust your safety to what people on EB say. Your commute runs right through some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the COUNTRY, period. LWG please don't play with your safety for a slightly shorter commute. Your shortcut through the dark woods is a bad idea.

  • Rochelle North Lawndale Resident since 1959

Bill none of the neighborhoods are as safe as they used to be, so each individual should use caution no matter where you have to travel. People have gotten mugged in front of the police and it can happen anywhere, not just the bus stop (ask the Mayor). If you don't own a car or can't afford to drive, public transportation is the only other way to go unless you have a friend who doesn't mind taking you to and from work everyday.

Hipolito Roldan is the President of the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation. He built the Plaza Taino elderly housing project which now need major structural repair. The entire first floor is dug up and unusable. The repair work started for about a year ago but came to a halt as Hispanic Housing Development Corporation run out of money. The open floor causes problems for the elderly and disabled residents as necessary services cannot be provided.

The finances for the 65th Infantry Boringueneers veterans housing project will be a welcome source for the Hispanic housing Development Corporation and for all its residents.

I would say there is a good chance it is true. The part about the structural integrity of the Plaza Taino being bad is definitely true.,

Hi
I have a friend who is looking for an apartment for her and her daughter. She is trying to find a 2 bedroom for $800 I know sounds unrealistic but humor me anyway. Thanks:)

I advise you have them look in Old Irving Park. They may get lucky and find a good apartment close to that price. I'd advise they drive the area, specifically in the coordinates of Irving Park north to Montrose, and Pulaski west to Keeler. Keystone ave, Kedvale, and Keeler have a lot of apartment buildings and or older condos that put up for rent signs, as well as Cullom ave and Berteau. Good luck!

On another EB Thread "Mayoral Race" a self proclaimed gang member talks about how he will fight to stop gentrification and yuppies from taking over HP and wanted Chuy for the city and Juanita Irizarry for the 26th ward elected to accomplish this goal. This person goes on to state what great things gangs have done for HP and that gentrification is ruining these things by forcing fellow gang members to move out of HP. I wish I would have read his thread earlier because several of his statements were pulled from EB before I could read them. I am astonished when he proudly writes that most of HP residence were criminals and gang bangers working together against good neighbors who called the police back in the 80's and 90's! I found it interesting that he states he attends beat meetings and will use every legal way to stop the undesirables from taking over HP, like they did in Wicker Park. I started this thread because the other threads topic was not about gang bangers and here non-gang members can read what a confessed gang banger thinks about them and how gangs "won't give up without a fight"-" It won't be as easy as you think to get rid of us"! This is what is happening in HP right now. Criminals in HP are working to get politicians elected who they believe will keep them living here and stop the evils of gentrification from occurring. Do they think they can stop progress or law abiding citizens from moving into HP? What about all the good people of HP that they have been victimizing in decades past? Do they think they will allow this to happen? This topic is now open for discussion. Is it wrong to want to make HP a beautiful place again to raise a family at the expense of moving criminals and gang bangers out?

  • SpaceCowboy Humboldt Park

This is a fantastic thread! Never would have imagined it would go so long with so many. It is great to read what my neighbors have contributed to it whether people believe it to be right or wrong. I was shocked to read what some people wrote and laughed at others. I have no doubt that HP is a better place to raise a family because of it. Together we can, but, this is the thinking of a former member of the brotherhood of Chicago's finest. LOL!

I live in the same area AND my kid goes to ChiArts so how about that Washtenaw1? Every school, every neighborhood, every block is going to have problems, there will always be a bad apple and the grass is ALWAYS greener. As tapdancemom pointed out, these kids come from all over the city and have had to change schools, schedules, travel arrangements and their lives to be in this school because they WANTED TO and have been CHOSEN to be there. They are in school from 8-5 everyday, working hard then come home to do homework, practice, chores and so much more. I am only grateful to have such hard working, dedicated kids attending school in my neighborhood. The inconvenience of the 8 and 5 o'clock drop off/pick up times are no more irritating than the dibs we are still seeing strewn all over our street a month after the snow, the mountains of ice that that block the walkways and parking spaces or the potholes that kill my car. It's Chicago, I love it, I embrace it and I support it.

Hello All, just a warning... I had ALL of my tires and rims stolen off of my Honda Fit early Sunday morning. It had to have happened after 1am. It happened near 2828 W Belden. I didn't have locking nuts but from what I have been reading it doesn't sound like they would have helped. Keep an eye on your cars folks! I cannot believe this happened 2 block away from the police department. They're doing a great job of patrolling the neighborhood... Not! I am super paranoid that this will happen again. Has this happened to anyone and were you targeted multiple times?

  • Living in the city it would be something to consider when buying a new car... My dad had a car that was known to be targeted for stealing radios. The third time his radio got stolen he gave up. I second the blinking light thing. It sounds silly but it seems to have stopped break ins on my car (one window and one catalytic converter)

  • Sorry that happened to you! The dealer warned me about this when I bought my Fit. The cars are easy targets because they're so light. I park in a garage, so I haven't bothered with the wheel locks yet, but I will probably get them the next time I bring my car in for maintenance.

Doorbell Repair

Hey Everyone,

I am looking for recommendations for buzzer/doorbell repair or rebuild. We have an existing set up in place for a four unit building that hasn't worked in years, and I am wondering if any of you have had success with a specialist located in the area. It sounds like it could be pretty expensive, but all we are really looking for are working door chimes as opposed to electronic entry. Any ideas? Thanks everyone.

Grab-A-Bite

Whatever it is, it's coming to the Western Blue Line. Obviously they have coffee and snacks of some variety. Other than that, all I can gather is that they have sandwiches. It's a London-based company and so far has very little web presence in the U.S. Their UK website really doesn't have much info, either.

I have so many convenience-food related questions!

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

Grab-A-Bite is going INSIDE the Western station, in the thing where the little Dunkin Donuts used to be. No idea when it's opening or how/what the food is.

As for rents - probably very high and wrapped in city red tape. Though when the guy who had the franchise for the Dunkin closed it to try and operate as an independent, he was selling those cellophane-wrapped pastries that were really not very appetizing, so I can understand what he didn't make enough to pay the rent.

  • My dream of a mini Bang Bang in that spot has come to an end. Found a bit more info here on the London company and CTA rental pricing: http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/7/71/148291/london-based-sandwich-shops-coming-to-4-cta-stations

Brown Sack?

Just wondering if anyone has heard any updates on the Brown Sack location. Wasn't it bought and to be reopened under different management? Is that still happening? Will it be the same name? I've been craving a good sandwich!

  • KJ

Considering how often The Brown Sack was open in the end, it's almost like nothing changed. :-)

  • Peter W. CAPS Member 1413 Beat

Okay, it is now March and it doesn't look like much has happened at the old Brown Sack location. Does anyone know what might be expected here? The news reports indicated a new eatery was going open early in 2015.

Where can I get some decent asopao?

Went to Bruquena at 12:30 today and they were closed (waiter had not arrived yet). What kind of excuse is that? Then went across the street to Latin American. Ordered Asopao de Pollo con arroz and Asopao de Salchicon con fideos. It was basically water, no real sazon. Hubby's asopao de pollo had one measly piece of chicken and there was not enough salchichon in mine. Came away so disappointed. So where can I get a decent asopao?

  • The only place I had good Asopao is Puerto Rico. It's a shame you would think Division Street would have decent Puerto Rican food. You could always try outside of the neighborhood.

  • Allen Montgomery The real humboldt park

La Bomba is one of the best Puerto Rican restaurants, it's on Armitage between Kedzie and Sawyer

Piano Tuner?

Anybody have a lead on a reasonable piano tuner in or near Avondale/Logan Square?

Admittedly, Mr. Opporknockity is a good piano tuner. One day he was called to tune the piano of a notoriously fussy client.

“Please, Mr. Opporknockity, come and tune my piano,” the client pleaded. “You’re the only tuner in all Chicago who can tune it right.”

Mr. Opporknockity had heard how difficult this client was to please, but he agreed to try.

Well, he tuned her piano ever so carefully, and satisfied that it was prefect, went home. But the next day, just as he feared, the woman called. “I’m sorry,” she said, “but my piano simply isn’t tuned well yet. You’ll have to come back and try again.”

Mr. Opporknockity sighed and said “I’m sorry too, ma’am, but I cannot return.”

    “Why not?” the woman huffed.

“Because, don't you know? Opporknockity only tunes once!”

Daycare recommendations please!

Hey! I'm currently looking for daycare for my 2 month old little boy. We are hoping for end of the month but I know that's cutting it close. Can anyone recommend anything in Logan Square or more south? My husband and I work in River North so anything on the way or even close by north of Ls would be great. Open to in-home or facility. Thanks in advance!!!

  • Before my friend moved to Edison Park she took her kids to Willow Tree (around Western/Augusta). I heard nothing but good things about it.

  • Our son is almost two and at Le Petit Amis Avondale. They have another location in logan square. Great space, activities, and loving attentive caregivers. Montessori based too!

success contesting speed camera citations?

I'm interested to hear if anyone has successfully contested a speed camera citation.

I live near Clemente High where they've installed cameras both on Division and Western. I couldn't figure out why I'd see the lights flash over and over as cars passed seeming to be driving at a normal rate of speed. Then I got two tickets in the mail: it's a school zone and speed limit is 20mph "when children are present."

Then I got two tickets in the mail: it's a school zone and speed limit is 20mph "when children are present."

First of all, I am not a speeder but I've never seen a car slow down to 20mph on Western unless there is heavy traffic. If you don't maintain the flow of traffic you're liable to cause traffic problems (not to mention the road rage you'd incite).

Second, does anyone know the law? Does "when children are present" mean when they're in sight, or does it generally mean when children are in the area i.e. in the school building?

Either way, seems to me these cameras are just slapping drivers with fines without having any positive impact on behavior.

If a ticker writer has a habit of writing false tickets they should be fired. If they perjured, themselves in any way, they should face stiffer charges.

    Glad,u got off.

You can get a copy of the voice transcript from Administrative hearings. Get a cd of the judge saying there was no pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Citizens need to be aggressive in going after the villains. Whe they are employees of the city or their vendors we really have to shed the light of day ob this.

I got a ticket where the photo was doctored. I need to do the same as you and go after the person who wrote the ticket or doctored the photo. Wonder if there is some kind of bonus given to those who write alot of tickets.

This is where we do our civic duty and get rid of government representatives who are guilty of illegal activities?

Let us know what you do and the results.

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

Oos...Go to Deputy Larry Philips. Find out what agency regulates this city vendor and go after them. Procurement or Jamie Rhee approves city contracts and their pay, ent. Speak to her, ask what body regulates the camera and file a complaint. People are angry about school closings and the Red light cameras.the issue is hot enough to unseat a Mayor.

Dogs should not be kept outside in this weather!!

I'm calling you out, whoever you are, on the 1300 Block of Ridgeway who keep their two german shepherd type dogs outside all the time.... in this weather, shame on you! What kind of people are you? Let them lay in the entry way if you feel they should't be in the living quarters of your home. You do not deserve to have them!

  • HPPie Born in HP

Key point - as long as they have access to shelter and food. Do you think anyone would make such a fuss if they had a heated doggie condo? The fact is there are lots of idiots in this city who abuse animals. Thankfully there are good samaritans who try to save them. I dont think 911 is the correct path, thats why we have other outlets to handle these situations. (Which they did).

  • yeah so the great pyr post? your dog isnt weird, that's its breed. winter weather is their weather. and yes, brutal chicago winter weather. but, then people freak out and would call cops on you. i have a newf and he is an indoor pet through and through but he...

(btw, lots of dogs love winter, mixes and different breeds). I get it, there are days that dogs should be inside, but, keep in mind, some dogs stay outside, some people have guard dogs, and some actually love it.

What do YOU pay for Comcast???

I've had it with Comcast, just like so many others... In less than a year, my internet fee went from $77 (which I thought was absurdly high!), to $83, to $95 this month!!! My co-worker told me yesterday she pays $30, and every time that "promotional" rate expires, she complains and they give it back to her... So, I'm thinking that's some pretty significant range! So, what do YOU pay??? I'm wonder just how wide this range is...

  • I am the furthest thing from being an electronic geek but I do try to keep up with the times since I have an 8 year old son. He keeps me enlightened with the latest technology. As long as I can view my shows I am ecstatic!!!!! Keep sporting on~!!!!

  • I pay $130, $95 sounds real nice.

3100 Block of Belden and Lyndale

Hello -
I am interested in connecting with neighbors in this area to become more cooperative. It's been really difficult the last 3 years to drive down the alley, because people don't clean their area and many that do, place all of the snow in the middle of the alley. Would love to form an understanding so our entire alley is clean, like other cooperative blocks. Would also like to connect for more block parties and community-based partnerships.

  • Sigh but there are condos there as well it really makes me angry because people are so inconsiderate

  • Hi Aimee. As one who lives in the 3100 block of Lyndale, I've got to agree. It's tough. During that storm a few weeks back, I worked with quite a few neighbors to clear the way behind the buildings. We do actually have done decent neighbors

Hi Aimee. As one who lives in the 3100 block of Lyndale, I've got to agree. It's tough. During that storm a few weeks back, I worked with quite a few neighbors to clear the way behind the buildings. We do actually have done decent neighbors

There was an incident where a building owner along Kedzie between our two streets had hired a plow company to clear their parking area. The truck left a 4' talk pile in the middle of the alley. I along with several other fuming neighbors, contacted residents of the building to have the owner rectify the situation. Within a few hours the plow was back and cleared the way.

There are quite a few renters in the area, but there are also some owners too. Two of the buildings at intersection of the alley in question are owner occupied. One on Lyndale at the corner and the one with the lovely garden out back.

I'd potentially be interested in something centered around it little area.

West Humboldt Safety

Hi all!!!

I was hoping some of you guys can help me out here -

I am considering a move to the area west of Humboldt Park. I have my eye on a place a couple of blocks South of Cemitas Pueblas (Le Moyne and N Central Park ish)

I'm a single male in my mid 20s, moving from the West Loop.

I've been told the area West of the park can get a little dangerous - what do you guys think? Is the neighborhood on the up and up or on the decline?

Thank you!!!

  • everyblockhp Looking to make hp a better place for everyone !

    Great post Tanja !
