Yet another package stolen

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a heads up, had a package stolen from my porch on the 3200 block of W. McLean Ave. FedEx tracking number states "left on porch" at 11:26 am. I got the mail at noon, nothing there.

We generally request packages to have signature on delivery, however this was a gift sent from my in-laws (actually the last package they shipped went missing as well). I work from home, doorbell never rang.

I filed a police report, had FedEx run a "trace", etc.

If you happen to see this fancy ottoman hanging out in a nearby alley give me a shout I guess!

http://www.hayneedle.com/product/garrettdoublestorageottomanwithtraysideottomans.cfm

Thanks!

  • I guess if you didn't know the package was coming, and the FedEx guy didn't ring the bell, well, my idea won't work. But when I know a package is coming, and I am home, I leave a LARGE PAPER note on the door saying something like, "FedEx: WE ARE HOME. PLEASE KNOCK HARD. THANK YOU. :-)" along with the date.

    It has worked for us.

  • After reading a bunch of these stories of stolen shipments, I decided to have my holiday purchases shipped to my husband's workplace. Which was promptly broken into and my packages opened and rifled through. What are the chances???

Maldonado trying to sneak through another deal to strong hold Humboldt Park and take tax dollars.

Four-story building low income housing is getting green-lit in Humboldt Park without community input despite being a proposal that would permanently "change the dynamic of the neighborhood."

There are great single family homes and town homes being built all over the neighborhood at $400 to 600K.by the private sector ( including land). Those that support this project at $800K per unit seem not to like similarly priced properties being built in HP. There are many foreclosed condos along the lake front that are larger and better appointed then this proposed construction. If the backers here were interested in helping veterans live in $800K properties, there many other ways to achieve that end. These units should not cost $250K to build. Don't forget there is no land cost in the deal. Clearly, under the cover of helping veterans, someone here was planning to walk off with $27,000,000.

Did anyone ask if that $27,000,000 is going to be used to repair the trail of poorly constructed projects by the for profit developer here?? Perhaps we should ask if this for profit developer has built ANY project that has been successful unrelated to HHDC.. ANY other homes built by the developer here? Maybe a few town homes were build someplace or just a duplex was built?. Can we see a 4 story condo building built by this developer anywhere, ANY??? What were the per unit costs at any of those unrelated projects (IF ANY)????.

HOWEVER, if the objective is to create 49 units that should cost $250K per unit and not have to account for the $550K balance per unit here the developers will walk away with, then you should support the project.

Rain Barrel Setup

Hi Neighbors,

Does anyone have a rain barrel? If so, I would love to see your setup or just ask some questions. Please post here or PM me.

Thanks!

  • I have two 55 gallon barrels that are adequate most of the time. They sit on two rows of cinder blocks so my watering cans can easily fit under the 'faucets'. Due to the massive weight I also have a rigid Styrofoam board under the cinder blocks. I also placed some large patio blocks around the setup so my feet don't get muddy when there's been an overflow event.
PS I would pm you, but I don't know how!!!

  • I wish I could remember the specific volume of water mentioned, but the point that stuck with me from a speaker a few years ago was that the amount of water captured from a typical Chicago Bungalow roof in an average rain already exceeded the capacity of a single rain...

I wish I could remember the specific volume of water mentioned, but the point that stuck with me from a speaker a few years ago was that the amount of water captured from a typical Chicago Bungalow roof in an average rain already exceeded the capacity of a single rain barrel. I think the rest of the discussion was about rain gardens, use of multiple cascaded barrels, and placement of rain barrels so that run-off didn't damage foundations or cover public walks.

Not explicitly answering your question, but here are some photos of a project that won this year's Green Award from the Chicago Historic Bungalow Association for handling runoff and flooding. It looks like two barrels are cascaded, and another one definitely makes use of a diverter that redirects runoff back into the sewer.

If you're on Facebook, you can ask the homeowner questions about his setup:

Maldonado: Opposition to Veteran Housing 'Sounding Like Racist' Comments

http://dnain.fo/1IXS2xQ

Maldonado is beginning to sound a little desperate, making these baseless accusations publicly. I think someone knows he might be in trouble come February. It took citizens coming together to root out these back door deals which were right in front of us the whole time.

HUMBOLDT PARK — A proposal to build affordable housing for veterans in Humboldt Park continues to stir opinion, with the local alderman recently calling some comments by opponents on socal media racist.

  • Same tricks, different development.

Bait and switch, steal and twitch.

Politicians LOVE no-bid contracts so that they can hand fat-cat deals to their buddies. Buddies then return the favor. Maldonado needs this project to go through so he can fund his re-election and dirt-throwing campaign to buy false advertisement to try to make up for his lousy management of the Ward.

  • Big Al WP Big Al, Your Neighborhood Pal

East Humboldt Neighbor, that figures it comes from Mayor Rahm-A-Dama-Ding-Dong's office. They change the rules and the numbers so many times even Einstein couldn't keep track. Humboldtwriter, only the names change, but it's the same game. Politics is the art of BS.

Who is going to attend the meeting tonight, regarding the proposed veteran's building?

The more people involved, hopefully the more thoroughly all opinions can be taken into account. This means everyone, all ethnicities, all opinions.

  • One thing that won't be on the developer's contract is a guarantee of the quality of work. Look at the building a block away that Hispanic Housing built. Rotting falling apart garbage.

  • How does that big of a mistake happen? To overstate costs by 65%? It seems to be a little bit more than a rounding error.

You guys have been so awesome with these donations. Last time I dropped them off, the woman who runs the shelter had tears in her eyes and said please tell those Everyblock folks "thank you" and how much this means to us and the animals.

The animal shelter is in need again so I'm making another round picking up donations if you're able to donate/have old linens laying around.

This open-access shelter has very little funds and takes in many animals. They also provide a pet pantry for people who can't afford dog/cat food for their pets. It's so sad when you see people drop off their loved pets because they no longer can afford them. This pet pantry, which is running very, very low, helps keeps animals in their loving homes (and out of these open-access shelters).

Here's a list of items they need most:
- dog and cat food (any kind)
- treats to help fatten up the underweight dogs (actual dog treats or Aldi hot dogs are good, cheaper option)
- calming toys (such as stuffed animals or kongs and peanut butter - please no squeeky/stimulating toys)
- used (clean) towels, sheets and blankets for dogs/cats to lay on in the cages they're in basically 24/7. It helps lower their stress and gives them comfort.
- medications your pet didn't finish. These animals often come in sick from being on the street -- any antibiotics, pain pills or supplements help. There is a vet there that prescribes them and will use donated meds appropriately.
- Rescue Remedy or other calming supplements/sprays etc. (shelter life can be stressful)
- dog leashes, collars

I can pick up donations from your house Friday (8/1)12-1:30pm or 5-7pm. Or you are welcome to drop off at my place near North ave and California today 7/28 after 5pm or Wednesday after 7pm. Please message me for details.

Thank you SO MUCH for your generosity. The dogs and cats thank you.

Funny, but when I could not recognize the street corner in the photo I looked closer, and the phone number on the tackle shop tracks to the town of Kirckaldy, Fife, in the UK! Can't WBEZ get a picture of a similarly rundown looking street corner in Logan Square? Well, maybe not any more. Everything is getting rehabbed. so we import our pre-gentrification pictures from England! Cheers, old chap.

Carter, I think that you are correct in theory in regards to zoning. In practice, however, the areas that are affected by density bonuses in general and TOD projects specifically is an extremely small part of the City. A TOD site, for example, has to be 600 feet - and in some cases 1,200 feet - from a transit station. That's a one or two block radius, most of which is commercial corridors. Any redevelopment that would occur in the residential core of Logan Square's neighborhood streets would be as-right development and extremely unlikely to secure density bonuses.

As for encouraging the removal of existing residents? I'd say that's erroneous in an environment that allows development to occur as the zoning currently allows, since it would encourage an increase to the supply of housing in a high-demand market. If development is limited to one or two sites high-density because of neighborhood attitudes towards construction, then, yeah, prices will continue to rise...because the supply of housing has been artificially lowered.

Bring the Chicago Foodseum to Logan Square

Hi friends - I wanted to share an exciting potential opportunity for the Logan Square neighborhood - to be the home of the "Foodseum" - Chicago's first Food Museum!

They are in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to open their first interactive exhibit as early as Spring 2015: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/foodseum/chicagos-food-museum

The location has not been decided, but I immediately thought Logan Square would be the perfect location, with all the new restaurant activity, fantastic farmer's market, and plans for a future rare-fruit orchard.

After pledging my support, I emailed my thoughts to their executive director, Kyle Joseph, who personally wrote me back to thank me. He said that they are "big fans" of LS and they have been keeping an eye out there, and agreed that LS would be a great fit. He encouraged me to pass along the word in the neighborhood and said he would be happy to speak to fellow residents and supporters.

If you like this idea, please pass it along, donate to the campaign, and email the museum founders and organizers that you would love for Foodseum to come to Logan Square!

  • LD

Agreed, I have nothing against the idea of the museum (I'd def visit out of curiosity), I just wouldn't invest in it as I am doubtful of its sustenance. Ditto for the juice bar (if the profit margins actually float the juice bar for a while, it will close as soon as the craze dies down, vitamixes get cheaper, or another, less expensive juice bar opens), although I think there's a big difference b/t restaurant/retail and hospitality/entertainment and not sure the 2 are comparable.

  • Carter O'Brien lager beer rioter

There's of course nothing wrong with people having opinions. There is however a special place in hell for those who comment negatively on web stories/projects, etc they didn't even bother to visit before forming said opinions.

Next, don't assume anything for me. I don't care what gets built as long as it is according to code(ie no zoning changes) and my tax dollars don't have to pay for it.

I think most people have seen the race-baiting show in the media recently and realize that when somebody uses the term "racist" it is because they have already lost the intellectual argument.

Let's Get our Video Cameras Connected to CPD District/Cental Command

Being the IT Dept and administrator to the cameras that protect our Condo association since 2009, I have seen firsthand the power this tool has to solve crime. We've been subpoenaed twice and have produced useful video evidence for another dozen or so incidents over the last 5 years that all have helped make this community stronger. High ranking CPD Chief McNaughton has already successfully launched a pilot program in his previous position in Lawndale and we're very close to the reality where hiding from the law is no longer an option.

  • yourhandsmyface Palmer square. Drummer.

  • Smart Bike. I agree 1000 percent. On a side note I have been researching a ton on home security companies as well as ways to outfit our condo association with cameras. Can you recommend a good company that installs outside systems as well as maybe some DIY solutions. I know places like costco sell security systems as well as comcast/adt for home and you get what you pay for. Considering a man who stopped a tagger was shot at I want video around my home sooner than later.

  • Smart Bike Parts Local Bike Shop

Greetings Strike 3 - Back in 2009 we hired ADT to install 8 cameras around our property. Bike shop payed half and condo assoc payed half. Total cost of installation and equipment (cameras + DVR + Closed Circuit TV) was around $2K. Then we subscribed to 2DVR.com for $10/month and all residents have access to all the cameras 24/7 via their phones or computers.

Anyway, they have a wonderful mission that these services should be available to everyone, so they work on a sliding scale. If you do community acupuncture (which is a quiet room with several people getting it at once - it's not as weird as it sounds at ALL) - it's even less. I went there for several months and loved it. http://sagecommunityhealth.org/

This week-end there was a huge hawk 'posing' on the ground while someone not quite close took phone pictures. It appeared to be @ 2' tall and eventually flew up in a near by tree and posed some more. (I haven't seen any pigeons in that area lately either.)

As 'The Miss' and I went on our walk, we saw two pretty ladies walking arm-in-arm. I think they are sisters. One has a smile that could melt the snow; the other is a special needs adult who I do not believe can speak. I always say 'Hello' and the special needs lady released her companion's hand to give me a hug...a nice big hug.

Then she started to cry. Large tears. I said "Please don't be sad" and her companion said "Oh, she cries when she is happy." I said 'Well, then just keep hugging and I'm glad you are happy'.

If you see them in the park, please do say 'Hello' (Hugs are optional...)

  • I bet you saw a Coopers Hawk. One flew into our backyard a few years back so I did a little research to identify the species. It might have been 2 ft. but in a little Chicago backyard, it looked like a giant Condor.

  • I saw a hawk that fits the description in my yard a few days ago.

  • i have seen that hawk a few times… it really looks like massive compared to the other birds around there...and I am pretty sure I have seen what is left of the rabbits/pigeons it destroys… looks like a small explosion of feathers & fur in the middle of the field, with nothing else around…

the hawk i saw had quite a bit of white on it, so the coopers hawk looks to be it

This new bar and restaurant maybe a great addition to Logan Square. I have heard several different explanations as to just what it might be, stay tuned.

  • "A large ham selection will hang from behind the bar, and every guest, whether ordering a glass of wine at the bar or sitting down for a meal, will get a complimentary wooden board with a handful of fresh slices of meat like prosciutto or Spanish-style jamon with some pickles."
    How cool...

I went to the business meeting about the Mega Mall redevelopment, and nothing is written in stone, but the proposal was for: a 40,000 sq ft supermarket at the Sacramento end of Milwaukee with two stories of parking above and a two store gym over that. The rest of the block with be residential (approx 200 rental units) with retail on the first floor. It will appear to be 5-6 separate building from the outside with some set backs. There will be a new traffic light in the middle of the block for cars to turn into the parking lot. Truck traffic in the back. 20 ft sidewalks in front. 10% affordable housing and they said no TIF funds would be use (I would love to see that). The buildings will vary for approx. 7 to 9 stories. Those were the features I found most interesting but there was more.
That was the proposal. Call Alderman Waguespack or wait for the public meetings that are coming.

  • That public meeting should be interesting! Logan Square seems set on no buildings over 4 or 5 stories....with 6 really pushing it.

  • I guess a car was following the bus and then pulled in front and someone got out and smashed the bus's window. Supposedly gang-related over some dispute between the window-breaker and some passengers of the bus

The Maldonado take on the Vet Housing

Diversity, generosity is at the heart of proposed Vet housing

  • Is that $42.6 million project to support 49 units? So $800,000+ per unit. If that is, they should see if they could probably construct within current zoning rather than making a fortune in single unit housing.

  • Not an open bidding project. Overpriced development and friends of the Alderman construction company. You can buy land and build 109 single family homes for that price. Ridiculous. And tax exempt which means that all of the taxpaying homeowners will have an increased property tax burden.

Lost Cat?

There is a smaller Bengal type cat walking on Cortez near California. It does not have a collar but it isn't behaving like a feral cat and is wandering aimlessly. It was interested in food and would approach me briefly but not long enough for me to capture it without frightening it. I did not see any posts here about a missing cat, but I do hope this guy (or girl) finds their home.

Humboldt Haus Sandwich Bar North Ave/Sacramento

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Humboldt-Haus-Sandwich-Bar/298164123723519

Have you guys tried this yet?? My husband and I live around the block and have been waiting for months for this to open. The sandwiches are delicious...we prefer pick up or delivery but if you want a beer with your sandwich you can stop in and eat there. More of a deli than a restaurant. Keep local and try it...you won't be disappointed. Little pricey but the Italian and the Western are great!

Totally agree with the sign...don't think they need to hit us over the head that it is a liquor store, the beer/lotto signs in the window give it away. The deli is attached but it is a totally different store front, so don't think of it like you are getting a sandwich at a liquor store. Like I said it is worth a try! Sandwiches are more expensive but they really are delicious and high quality (we aren't talking subway).

The best way to open a business is to see the neighborhood as a palate of colors to choose from.

At least in Chicago, each 'hood has it's own collection of signage memes and color combinations. These have been distilled over time to the point that business owners know what works.

For the larger part the colors of Humboldt Park are yellow and red. A savvy pedestrian can see that in some of the most popular businesses in the neighborhood. WE BUY GOLD. TIP TOP. CURRENCY EXCHANGE.

Asides from the bit of green in Cermak's logo, green is only used to denote money services, such as accounting, taxes, payday loans. All those things that really bum the average dude out.

North Ave. is practically a highway on that stretch by the park. I regularly see people speeding through it as though it was an interstate. In order to catch a person's attention at such high speed one needs a large, bold, statement of services.

More often than not, people will slow down for LIQUOR, rather than "Artisinal Handmade Sandwiches" in a curly typeface on a dark green awning, as is the rage in Gold Coast/Other places I can't afford to live.

TLDR: Yeah, they put a trashy LIQUOR sign on their liquor store. Deal with it and be thankful that there is a GD sandwich shop you can walk to that isn't Subway.

Dog Stories/ Humboldt Park

Today we saw 'Big Boy' and his owner again. 'Big Boy' has advanced cancer. The family has moved out of the area to the suburbs, but some days, 'Big Boys' owner drives 40+ mins so that 'Big Boy' can walk in the park he grew up in....
My wish would be that if someone is ill, someone walks them in Humboldt Park as well.

Chilapan

Anyone know what's going on with Chilapan (Armitage and Bingham)? It's been closed since September due to a family emergency, but it really seemed to be going downhill once they moved across the street. The sign made it seem like they would only be closed one day. Hope they're doing okay. Loved that place!

Moreno's office is useless. He does not deserve re-election.

  • That blows. This place has amazing food.
