The organizers of Riot Fest have put fort a forward looking press release regarding the restoration of Humboldt Park after the massive mess that was created in Humboldt Park after Riot Fest.
In my humble opinion Humboldt Park is not designed to handle 60,000 visitors per night. The park is a mess and it will take months to repair. It has become an eyesore. The stench in the north side of the park is so bad that is unsanitary to use children's playground. This should not have been allowed to happen in the first place.
This is a community park and it should not be treated as a revenue generator by the city.
Please call Alderman Maldonado and express your displeasure at what has happened.
Please share this in your wall and participate in the discussion in every block.com

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

Coyote Sighting

Pretty sure that I saw a coyote on the green between the 900 North block of Sacramento Boulevard and Humboldt Drive. Last night at 9pm. Has anyone else seen coyotes in the neighborhood?

The neighborhood does need more studios and one bedroom apartments. It is still easy (now) to find an affordable place to live if you have two people but if it is just you, the options are really limited. Not sure if the new construction is going to address that or if their prices will be really high for these one bedrooms but there are very few one bedrooms in this neighborhood in general.

While I think it makes sense that the mega mall needs to go, I am also a renter and wonder how it will affect me once we start getting more retail, which the neighborhood needs unless you shop just at thrift stores or Shop and Save type of places. I also am pretty far from the Mega Mall though as well, so I don't think it would even affect me all that soon. Plus, my friend works at a big architecture firm that was asked to do a mock up for it possibly, and she said it would take 4-5 years anyway to be open for business for such a big project, especially if they have to build a parking deck.

  • Thanks for the correction, Anton Cermak. Whatever it is, it looks like phoney and cheap closeup.

Can anyone give me a referral for quality and affordable home cleaning service? Recently moved here. I've tried a couple of larger companies (manic maids and merry maids) and not only they are overpriced but cleaning quality is subpar. Suggestions are much appreciated!

Recommendations for snow removal in West Town/Humboldt?

Winter is on its way and I'm trying to hire someone for snow removal before I procrastinate too long. Do any of you have someone affordable and reliable who does it for your building? I'm looking for basic shoveling, not plowing, in the area directly east of the park.

  • I am following....

  • Michael Young Father and 13 year resident.

I work at West Town Bikes and there are youth in our organization that would appreciate the opportunity and can definitely be trusted and relied on.

  • Sarah RM dachshundist

I am getting a quote from my lawn guy. If you pm me, I would be happy to share his contact info. He has been reliable and reasonably priced on the lawn stuff this summer. (And I live 2 blocks east of the park, so likely in the same vicinity.)

Hi All - I just wanted to make everyone aware of a new business in the neighborhood that is a great resource for the community of Logan Square. Five Point Holistic Health is a community acupuncture clinic located on Fullerton just west of Kedzie that opened in May of 2014. I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

  • I can't speculate on how the practitioners at this particular clinic will address lower back pain, however in my experience all back pain can effectively be treated in a reclining chair with points other than those on the back (and without needing to disrobe at all), so a community type treatment could certainly work.

Thanks, Jill. My degenerated discs are L4/L5 and they're pretty bad (genetic and 8 years of year-round volleyball are to thank). I've had some excellent deep tissue massages and I've had enough physical therapy to know exactly what stretches to incorporate into my daily work outs but when discs are degenerated so severely, very little will help a certain type of pain. Thankfully, that level of pain isn't around daily but if I can find a holistic preventative measure in addition to the yoga, swimming, stretching, etc. then I'm all for it. I'm not opposed to private or group, which ever will deliver the best results. Thanks again, guys.

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). They checked that I had help and left me. I immediately started walking south to the gas station on Fullerton and California. I was gone about ten minutes. When I returned it was gone, though a hubcap was still on the sidewalk.

The person I talked to at the police station said that it is likely that someone perhaps with a tow truck saw it was broken down and took it. It would have been very hard to get gas for it and steal it in the time I was gone. I do have all the keys.

If anyone was in the area at the time or saw anything suspicious, please let me know. Thank you so much.

Sawyer/wrightwood street lights out STILL??

Okay maybe someone posted about this already. It's been I feel a couple weeks now that the street lights have been out on Sawyer between Atlgeld and Wrightwood. Now I don't come home late at night often but when I do I certainly don't feel safe not being able to have a well lit safe street to park and walk on. I already called the aldermans about this. Anyone hear anything????

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

Call your alderman. With I'd usual stunning foresight, the city did not hook 311 directly into Streets and Sanitation (the people who change streeights, fill potholes, paint over graffiti...) and it takes quite a while for 311 to get their paperwork over to S&S. Your alderman, however, can dispatch a S&S crew immediately to handle the issue.

  • I put in a 311 request but when I go to check the status it says the ticket doesn't exist. =\

They are out beyond Altgeld-Wrightwood as well, at least 2400-2600 and possibly further south, I didn't wander around in the dark to check.

It should be allowed IMH as long as it's a person and not a huge realtor/rental agency. There are often posts for people looking exactly for this on EB (as well as good places to eat, drink, do on weekends, etc.). As a landlord myself I often think about posting here (my tenants are thankfully long term so I haven't yet had the need). Perhaps this should be something that could be allowed the future.

  • IF EB is not removing the post then it is ok..........its is the housing section after all. Does it matter who post? This is site owned my a MAJOR corporation all we provide for free is data. Don't listen to these "hall monitors" on EB with nothing to do.

The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! I swim there occasionally--when you buy a park district lap swim pass, it's good at all of their pools. Compared to the other park district pools I've swam at, I'd say Koz has less than the average amenities but is still adequate. There are no lane lines, and there's no sink or mirror or hand dryers/paper towels in the locker room. So if you go to the bathroom you have to wash your hands in the shower and dry your hands on your own towel. Forget about styling your hair or drying it. Not the end of the world, but not ideal either. The lack of lane lines has always unnerved me, and it seems like it would be a problem if the pool was really full, but I've never actually seen it get really full so maybe it's just not an issue. It's typically filled with more casual swimmers rather than competitive ones.

And yeah, many of the park district locations do not update their schedules online promptly so it's always best to verify all the info you need to know while you're actually at the pool, especially around holidays or seasons changing.

The first time I went, I was very confused about the layout--you walk straight ahead until you're actually inside the pool room, then show the lifeguard your lap swim pass, then proceed to the right for the women's locker room. (Most places you go in the locker room first.)

  • I used to swim at this Park District pool years ago and it was free. All Park District pools were free.

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

Beware of wasps (Humboldt Park - on Kedzie and North)

Just wanted to let people know : My dog got stung by swarm of wasps entering the Park. Not sure if they were swarming around a spilled drink or if they nest got knocked down but they were in the grass. So watch out, this is on the trail into the park behind the Natl. Guard building on Kedzie right off North ave.

I heard on WBEZ last week that we could expect a rise in the number of bees this month. Perhaps that extends to wasps.

    Rotting grass stinks.

I was there, and my boots were covered in mud. They do not stink like kah kah.

The most dangerous thing I saw were numerous people stepping in the water-filled and therefore hard to see potholes on Luis Munoz Marin Dr. Everyone lost their balance, stumbled and got their shoes wet. I didn't see anyone fall, but I suspect it happened. I would be shocked if there weren't reports of sprained ankles.

It would be nice if the Park were maintained to a level of perfection before Riot Fest as it is expected to be restored to afterwords.

  • I live on Fairfield just north of Bloomingdale. There is no permit parking on my street which went unnoticed by festival goers because there was (albeit more limited than usual) parking available all weekend and all was quiet after the music stopped. Completely unexpected.

Some constructive advice for next year. (Don't get me wrong, fun times, but much room for improvement)

1. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Put some more thought into the design/layout.
a. There were many dangerous bottlenecks, got lucky nothing went wrong as the lack of function would have crushed people (especially where along the curvy roads with the metal barriers) IE The flow would have been much safer if the vendors were set up 20 feet off the roads instead of right on them, or if there were another way for the masses to move rather than just the roads.
b. Somehow you made one of the largest parks in the city seems like an overcrowded rat maze… poor spacial layout and very little thought into how people walk, and how to get people form stage to stage

2. Add way more port-o-johns, average wait was over 20 minutes after 6pm

3. Make the maps accurate...The mobile app, was misleading. It was stressed multiple times to download the app, and we did. One problem was that the water stations were not located correctly, and I think they were missing all together in areas. Had this been a hot weekend could have been bad situation. Also, the one water station we did find was quite a disappointment...

4. 3 Day Passes did not have wrist bands… why not? One could not leave and come back.. stinks

5. VIP is practically worthless. Who cares about free drinks. The benefit of having a ticket (minus the re-entry) has diminished ten fold and compared to many other festivals standards, hardly deserves a VIP title. Viewing areas were not VIP. bathrooms were same as other bathrooms, just shorter lines, and

thanks for reading

  • Buster ~ I've read quite a few stories at The Denver Post and local affiliate stations in the Denver area. Seems there were quite a few factors in denying the permit that included engineering studies, traffic studies and of course, the feedback from the community (based on their 2013 experiences around issues of sound, drug use and traffic).

Of course, safety is always a concern should there be injuries and overdoses.

  • Interesting Square Peg. I just recall reading one account from a woman who lived there saying how they could barely support the people that live in the town with emergency services...and she was worried if something happened people would be out of luck. Lot's of challenges to putting on a big music fest.

  • that is wonderful, neighbors helping neighbors. So glad Pinta is home.

Fresh MarketPlace open date?

Thw owner said mid-September, but you'd think we would have heard about the opening date if it was around now. Does anyone have any info on the new grocery store on Western?

  • The failed inspection reports just seemed to indicate that most of the issues were things they hadn't received from the city yet (like an appropriate dumpster, etc): http://chicago.everyblock.com/food-inspections/sep11-fresh-market-place-failed-inspection-6385102/. I'm not super worried.

  • A close reading of that inspection indicates that an awful lot of what they were failed over is things that were not physically even on the premises at the time the inspection took place. Those are pieces that had not been supplied, and could be on back order, either by...

A close reading of that inspection indicates that an awful lot of what they were failed over is things that were not physically even on the premises at the time the inspection took place. Those are pieces that had not been supplied, and could be on back order, either by the vendor who did the installation, or the company being contracted for their waste disposal. Not a big deal. Just seems a bit like a rush job, or they had locked down the date for inspection, and as things tend to happen. The job is taking longer than they originally anticipated, and planned when they broke ground.

Friend's Cargo Bike Stolen

My friend's Madsen cargo bike was stolen from Altgeld and Mozart earlier. This is the best full shot of the bike that she could find. The baby carrier was not on it but the bike has stickers on it. One is about us winning the war on the environment. Please keep an eye out for it! Her family recently went car-free and now this happened.
