Richmond Tavern Sports Bar Part 2

Just got a had a 2nd go at Richmond Sports Tap/Tavern/Bar on Richmond and Grand since my first May visit when they took over and were remodeling (http://chicago.everyblock.com/users/13094/posts/), and have to say that they've really taken a nice step forward as a neighborhood sports bar. I personally loathe sports bars in general that cater to the frat boy types....but then again, that's most of them, but if you're looking for a place that has a ton of TVs to catch...

I personally loathe sports bars in general that cater to the frat boy types....but then again, that's most of them, but if you're looking for a place that has a ton of TVs to catch the game, a pool table and cheap drinks this place is the business. Here's the skinny on why you should check it out:

1. Plenty of TVs to catch the games.
2. They don't play music over the games.
3. Historic-like joint that the bartender (Margarite is awesome) will gladly tell you about.
4. Drinks are cheap and bar is stocked with some great vintage liquor left over from previous owner.
5. The original bar that once wrapped around to another room is now exposed and functioning.
6. Joey Boston's Beef joint is right across the street for the beef sangich combo you're craving.

They've worked hard putting in new floors and paint while keeping historic touches to make this place unique. Think Archies on Rockwell meets The Beachwood Inn with double the size.

Anyone had luck with antique window repair?

have some of those big old windows with original glass that are in good to fair condition but sticky / painted shut...one has missing panes. has anyone been able to find a reasonable repair source? (if it gets to be $600 or more per windows, it kind of forces you to go with new ugly windows, which is a shame as these windows have survived for more than 100 years) and do all the companies take the windows completely out to do the repairs or do any leave them in?

  • Try it yourself - I've repaired five windows so far in my two flat but it's a lot of work. Start with a box cutter and slowly take the windows apart.

I've replaced panes at Ace Hardware but that can be about $40 or so per pane judging by the picture on your post.

Like Andrew above I've replaced several banks of windows in our 90+ year apartment as well. It is ALOT of work but can be worth it (and makes you feel like you really know something!). I removed the entire painted wooden window (in the summer), stripped, sanded, stained and varnished them. Re-painted the exterior side with heavy exterior paint and re-patched the 'grout' that connects the window to the wood. I replaced cracked panes from a glass cutter on Ashland near Irving Park .. don't remember the name but he was very accommodating .. especially when I was off on my measurements (first time measuring glass) .. they happily ( and with no charge) trimmed the extra 1/4" off I needed to fit them perfectly .. And at that point with the windows removed you might as well re-seal your storm windows to add an extra-level of air-tightness from the elements. Anyway, point is that it can totally be a DIY project if you have time and you're up for it ... good luck!

Inexpensive massage?

Does anyone know of an inexpensive place, maybe a school, where you can get an inexpensive massage? Ive never had one, and would love to try it out. Thanks.

  • Jim Mitchell 11-year Logan Square resident

    Cortiva provides $40, 50-minute massage by a student: http://www.cortiva.com/locations/chicago-massage-schools/massage-therapy-centers.aspx

Another possibility is your health insurance, which may cover chiropractic. If your chiropractor keeps massage therapists on staff, then their services may also be covered. This worked for me for several years (I had an employer-provided Blue Cross PPO that was pretty much in the "gold to platinum" range, so of course YMMV).

  • I've been to Chicago Touch, when they were near the Division stop. Now they're in the West Loop. Affordable, no frills. Their Division location had more of a hippy coffee shop vibe, less of a "spa" experience. Great practitioners who really cared.

  • I have been going to Chicago Touch for three years, now. The current location is at Ada and Lake, about halfway between the Morgan and Ashland Pink Line stop. They are affordable and very good.

Received check for deceased former resident of the house...

What can I do with this? At the risk of sounding anti-capitalist, it seems a shame to let this health insurance company keep their refund amount when maybe the next of kin of this lady could benefit? Does anyone know how to track down next of kin, or more importantly if checks like this are even cashable by a dead person's survivors?

Graffiti

I've seen this particular graffiti popping up around my neighborhood. Anyone see it elsewhere or know who it's affiliated with?

  • You can't buy spray paint in the city

  • bigbadron sorry.

yup, it was banned in an attempt to curb graffiti. if i'm not mistaken, the judge that approved the ban said it wouldn't help, and would just hurt those who legitimately needed spray paint. he was pretty much right.

lost ID and credit cards

My "wallet" is a bunch of cards tied together with an elastic. I lost it near Parson's chicken (the corner of Armitage and Humboldt Blvd) last night at about 12:30am. Please get back to me if you have any information. Thank you.

  • I tried to give him a reward but he wouldn't take it! He told me to "pay it forward" and give it to John the homeless man so I did.

  • Loulu Me

More good from this, I love it. Yes it is nice to offer a reward but we should do good because it is the right thing to do, and not to be rewarded. I am not surprise the person who returned it also told you to pay it forward. Oh if everybody could always be so good and neighborly...How much better would/could the city we already love be?

Delilaah, thank you for both your concern and valid question!

Adam's experience as the Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation means that he works alongside the 45th Ward's Alderman John Arena in handling Constituent services and timely handling of many types of issues in his ward. This means his current responsibilities include managing garbage removal/recycling programs, street sweeping, snow removal, writing tickets for city ordinance violations, as well as reporting in with the Commissioner and Inspector General. It is Adam's intent to increase the constituent service reactivity in the ward to help with street beautification and general cleanliness of the ward. Further information on the responsibilities of a Superintendent can be found at: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/streets_san/svcs/division_and_wardsanitationoffices.html

His experience with CAPS is not that of an individual merely attending these meetings, but of actually being an active member of the board working with officers of the law to increase the safety of his ward. Adam has received awards from both CAPS and the City Police for his activities in regards to the organization including Volunteer of the Year and a notice of recognition for outstanding work throughout Chicago. One such example was his personal petitioning and fighting to close a liquor store on Division that had been selling tobacco and alcohol to minors while not discouraging the areas criminal presence.

Aside from this experience Adam has been a General Foreman within the Carpenters union and owned his own small business for 5 years lending him direct knowledge with both Labor and Business issues. In addition he formerly sat on the 1st Ward First board and has worked on the campaigns of Barack Obama, John Arena, Joe Moreno, Scott Waguespack, Susana Mendoza, Eddie Reyes and Will Guzzardi, to name a few.

Please feel free to check out our website: http://www.coronafor26.com/

  • Delilaah We need republicans in Cook county!!!

Robert Terra what is Adam Corona's educational background? Please don't provide "the experience" that "makes up" for education? Did he go to college?

Ranger is not your average cat. He was recused from an abusive home and as a result is very distrustful of strangers, other animals and unfamiliar surroundings. He's an indoor cat who has had minimal contact with life beyond the window sill. He's declawed and frightens easily. He won't approach unknown persons and will scatter quickly if approached. If cornered, he will probably cower and cry loudly. Under normal circumstances it would be easy to pick him up if he's cornered as he doesn't bite or become aggressive.

He's current on all his vaccinations and is microchipped. The microchip information is partially outdated as I have recently moved. However, the phone number remains the same. He wasn't wearing a collar at the time of his disappearance.

Ranger is a tabby that weighs approximately 11 pounds. He's gray with a dark stripe pattern along his legs. He has no hair on his stomach so the surface of his underbelly is smooth and pink.

Please contact me if you think you've seen him.

Teachers can (and most of them do!) work their a**es off for their kids, but if the kids don't have their parents as their FIRST and FOREMOST teachers, how can teachers succeed across the board and up to the standards they are held to? It is a team effort- you cannot have successful schools without parents doing their jobs- you need to remember that!

Blue Can - Recycle Service

A quick neighborhood survey: How often does the blue cans get emptied in your neck of the woods?

As of late it's been erratic in my neighborhood--sometime up to takes 3 weeks to get collected. I call 311 and I am impressed that it gets picked up within a day or 2. Does anyone have insight why they don't come on a weekly basis? And how it can be set up to do so?

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

U are a lucky guy if yours are on schedule like clockwork.

In EGP it is utter chaos. Garbage can be strewn all over the alley and S&S people not pick up blue and black on their pickup day.

Some wards are managed well and some not.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

Mine is consistently picked up every other Monday. As others have said, they are getting more particular about following what is recyclable. I take care when packing the bins, but I did get dinged for having a bit of Styrofoam in there once.

My boyfriend was home at the time and went out to speak with them. He got the name of the company hired by the city of Chicago to do the work. It was Summit construction. He then called Summit and tried to get them to fix it. At first the secretary was very nice, and seemed to be trying to help him. Saying, she'll pass off the info and someone will contact us. Weeks went by, multiple calls and now no responses. We then called the police to get an assessor out to report it. Now again, weeks, and no responses. Multiple calls, and emails and we are getting no one to help.
Our fence is now rusting, and the gate door is not closing properly since the damage. It is now only getting worse.
Can anyone help us? Give us advice as to what to do. At this point, I am at a loss.
Thanks!
Kate

  • I know Sumit well, having managed a few of their CDOT jobs. Make sure you're going after the right company, because they are spelled Sumit...

The correct email for them is sumitconstruction@gmail.com. They use this for everything...so someone is seeing your complaints. If you're getting no response from their project manager (do you know who it is?), let me know and I can call the owner or his son. They do a lot of alley and sidewalk work for CDOT.

  • Hire a Lawyer.

  • Go to your Alderman's office - this is what they do.

I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

I remember that day and I had no reason to be or park on California. There is no picture printed on the ticket or online that I can see and obviously I never got a hard copy on my windshield. I'm contesting..not sure if I'll get anywhere as the only proof I have is some text messages setting up to meet with my client at that time. I suppose she can vouch for me but not sure if that even has any weight. Anyone gotten a similar ticket lately? Years ago when we first moved to the city we got a ticket for no city sticker our first week. The law is you have 30 days to obtain one (at least it was back then). We contested by mail with evidence of our least out of town, our new lease in Chicago and moving receipts and we lost.

I was so livid, I contacted Pam Zekman at CBS 2 and our case was one featured on a news story about bogus tickets. We ended up having to sue the city for our money back. We ended up winning our case and they also had to pay all our court costs. My wife was unemployed at the time so we had nothing but spare time to fight it but it did take a lot of time and effort on our part. They simply bank on people being too busy to fight tickets.

Moral of the story, even the ALJ's in this city are dirty and there's no guarantee they'll reverse your ticket even if you're right, but definitely fight in person.

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

  • margv Margaret

We had a problem finding someone to put a cap on last fall, same issue with small project. I got Lindholm roofing to come out, it was a really quick job ended up costing just under $300 I believe- more than I thought it should've but they were really the only people I could get out anytime soon. They were prompt and professional and worked out well.

In my humble opinion Humboldt Park is not designed to handle 60,000 visitors per night. The park is a mess and it will take months to repair. It has become an eyesore. The stench in the north side of the park is so bad that is unsanitary to use children's playground. This should not have been allowed to happen in the first place.
This is a community park and it should not be treated as a revenue generator by the city.
Please call Alderman Maldonado and express your displeasure at what has happened.

  • Also, I pay for the class. It is not free. The one you are referencing is a teen program offered by HPAC.

Again, I love Riot Fest, I enjoy attending the festival. I agree that they do great things for the community.

I think a proposal is a lovely idea. While I am not the most qualified to analyze the cost for the equipment and installation, I can definitely bring it up at the next community meeting. Thank you!

  • Jenn, why don't you try to find out where the $50,000+ went that Riot Fest paid to the Park District last year for damage.

Jenn, why don't you try to find out where the $50,000+ went that Riot Fest paid to the Park District last year for damage.

Many of us find it difficult to see where that much money went. Granted, there are numerous new trees, but those were already coming from previous years' storm damage. Is there the new promised drinking fountain? No. Is there a nicely paved walkway? No. Is there adequate trash removal? No. Are there washrooms for those using the park. Rarely. Have the rotten cedar bridge fence posts been replaced? No. Are there new curbs instead of muddy pits? No. Have the numerous low areas that are prone to flooding been filled in and reseeded. No. Etc.

Much of the money that Humboldt Park earns, or gathers in fines heads downtown for disbursement.

What Riot Fest pays in fines doesn't necessarily get used in Humboldt Park.

Why don't you write a letter to the Mayor asking for a full account of the revenue generated in Humboldt Park, and then ask why only a portion of that money gets to be utilized where it was earned; in our huge park that was already in desperate need of so much maintenance.

Ask the Mayor for funding for a sound system? Maybe the fact that the Fieldhouse was likely designed without much thought on acoustics will make this an impractical request.

I'd like to see the park have some sort of pavers used for the walkways instead of the multiple layers of pot-hole filled and cracking asphalt. I wonder what is under all that toxic goop?

Is that your dog?

We just saw a white with tan spots female chihuahua running loose around Central Park and Schubert. Wearing no collar or tags. She was timid but friendly and wouldn't let us get close enough to pick her up.
Just a heads up, hopefully she wasn't too far from home! :(

  • CC

There is a sign in Palmer square for a do that fits that description.

  • Just saw a pup fitting this description on central park and Dickens

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

Find a set of keys? My dad (visiting from Ohio) lost his somewhere...

Hey all, my dad is visiting this weekend from Ohio, and somehow lost his keys. My sister and I think they may be in or near Unity Park. He's staying on St. Louis. Let me know if you find a set of keys somewhere? Thank you!

  • Sorry, actually somewhere near Palmer Square Park, not Unity.

  • Liz

Hi Martha, I saw that someone in Palmer park found keys. They wrote their number in chalk with a note. Good luck! Sorry I didn't take down the number!

Gun shots

Did anyone hear shots around logan blvd or Milwaukee? I want to call the cop but I don't hv any info apart from the possible sound.

  • There were some fireworks being shot off by a house party on Albany just south of Dickens last night; They had about two rounds of mortars and a few little bursts of firecrackers, but they weren't shooting off anything past 10PM.

  • Unfortunately, this morning was definitely gun shots

Donation pick-up?

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). Anybody know of anything? If not I guess I resort back to Free Stuff (and accompanying flakes) on CL and the Mysterious Alley People and forgo my tax deductions.

  • LD

thanks all - lots of options offered, maybe I donate stuff and get a tax break w/out much effort after all :)

  • I second donating to Howard Brown's "The Brown Elephant". They are a great organization here in Chicago.

Home cleaning service needed.

Can anyone give me a referral for quality and affordable home cleaning service? Recently moved here. I've tried a couple of larger companies (manic maids and merry maids) and not only they are overpriced but cleaning quality is subpar. Suggestions are much appreciated!

  • AMG

Try doing a search on this site. It's been asked many times and our neighbors have given some great suggestions.

    good luck!

  • Grace Housekeeper

I have many years of experience and many long time clients who would gladly provide referrals. I can provide you with a free estimate at your preferred date and time. Please feel free to call me at 773-858-0926

We use this group for our 2 bed 2 bath and 3 shedding dogs. Always get 2 ladies and we always have had excellent communication with the owner. He has come by a few times to check on their work. Very nice. Average price. Far above average cleaning.
