Anybody have a trusted dog-sitter/house sitter?

Hi there - just got tickets for a last-minute trip for Labor Day weekend, and our regular dog sitter is already booked. Does anybody have any recommendations? Prefer somebody who will stay at our house, but we could also bring our dog to somebody else's house. He's a big guy, 10 years old, very gentle, good with small dogs and older kids, but not cat-safe.

  • I'm with ERP1006, we use Urban Tailz and Anthony is our walker as well. He's wonderful and their prices are very reasonable.

  • +1 for iPet Chicago. We've used them for sporadic dog walking (when business travel takes me away from working at home), and all our vacations. Nothing but good things to say about them!

Paradise Garden on Drake and Lyndale

I have lived close to this garden for over 10 years and have known the owners of the church with attached garden. When they left last year they entrusted a few neighbors with keys to the garden, in case it started to turn into an eye sore....as they wouldn't know how it would be cared for being back in Puerto Rico. Last year I spoke with the new renters and they assured me that they "had it....don't worry...we've got the garden under control." But, as the year has worn on....I've watched this lovely little garden become an over grown viney-jungle of sorts. It breaks my heart. I know the original owners would never have wanted that. I'm rarely on everyblock, but have been told that this garden has been mentioned before. Are there people that want to help go over and help clean it up? I have a set of keys, and the original owners gave me permission to help with it's up keep. I think I have given the renters enough time to show how much they care/ and how well they will keep up with the garden. I think it's time to see if we might be able to start a little group that might meet up once a month....have pot luck...and keep it clean. I'm unsure how to truly turn it into a "community garden" as I think it is really tied to the church somehow....but I'm sure there would be a way in the future to keep it a garden as long as it is cared for and have it then deeded to the local community. I just wanted to see how many would be interested to help and what weekend might work best for everyone. :)

  • HM1

Happy to help as well! Would love to see this turned into a community garden rather than reserved for a few (especially when it's not being cared for)

  • I live on the block and could pitch in.

Jason, that's no doubt true, although I think a lot of the proposed parking spaces are to cover the fitness center. No science here and I could be wrong, but it's my observation (and common fodder for comedians for years) that everybody drives to their workouts and then jockeys for a parking space as close as possible to the door.

If it were just a grocery and a handful of smaller stores, they probably could cut the number of spaces significantly.

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

What's wrong with a fitness center? If people want to drive there, they'll park inside, and when they leave, they're gone. What's the issue? If we want the neighborhood go get better, we need economic development. That brings traffic - it's a package deal.

Lose a bicycle wheel?

A bicycle wheel turned up in my yard yesterday. It doesn't belong to anyone who lives in my building. Did anyone have a bicycle wheel stolen recently? It has a few pretty distinctive characteristics, so let me know what it looks like if you think it's yours. I live near the intersection of Sacramento and Fullerton.

Help! Missing Chicken!

Hey, has anyone seen a black and white striped (Barred Rock) chicken? She is small, just a baby, only 4 months old and she has gone missing from my yard. I am worried someone may have taken her, as it is unusual she would part from her sister.
Please let me know if anyone sees a chicken matching her description. She only has been missing since tonight but I am very, very worried.

Over Night Blue Line Construction

Our bedroom face the Western Blue Line stop. We are used to sleeping through the standard train sounds, but last night, they began night construction and we were awake for the entire thing. Although loud, the actual machinery is tolerable. What kept us up was the intermittent sound of boards or something similar being thrown from the el into large metal dumpsters on the ground. Every time I dozed off for a second, BOOM! Anyone know how long this is supposed to last? Should they be throwing materials from the tracks? I am exhausted.

Anyone have info about Paradise Garden?

There is a very nice looking garden at the corner of Drake and Lyndale that has a sign calling it Paradise Garden. There are many nice plants there as well as a gazebo and some benches. However, it has a fence surrounding it and I've never seen it unlocked in the year I've been living near it. Does anyone know the story behind this place? If anyone knows the owner, is there any chance it could be opened up some time for people in the area to visit and/or help maintain it?

Petition for I AM Logan Square to Remove Mark Fishman from their Board

"There is growing vocal discontent about Mark Fishman’s control and usage of the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (MAAF), as a tool to increase his substantial development and real estate holdings."

To find out more about this petition or sign it yourself: http://www.change.org/p/i-am-logan-square-ials-remove-mark-fishman-treasurer-from-your-board?recruiter=30671237&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

  • Agree with rogerparker. Fishman is a huge part of the reason the festival exists in the first place and the reason it has money to continue. Removing him from the board seems only like a kneejerk reaction from a person who very publicly had a bad time at the festival this year.

  • I would support that!!!!

Milshire Hotel closing

From DNA info

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140429/logan-square/milshire-hotel-residents-told-find-other-housing

LOGAN SQUARE — The Milshire Hotel, one of Chicago's few remaining single-room housing options for the troubled, will close next month, according to the building’s owner.

The residents have until May 31 to find new places to live.

“After over 43 years in the Logan Square area, I have decided to close the Milshire Hotel,” said a notice to each resident signed “Your Landlord/Friend, Art.”

“I wish you all well, and hope you find another place to live that you will be happy in.”

See article for the rest. I ran out of characters.

WHAT: Logan Square for All Rally

WHEN: Thursday, August 21st. Meet at the ONE Northside office at 5:00PM if that's convenient. The Rally starts at 6:00PM.

WHERE: ONE Northside office is at 4648 N. Racine (meet there at 5:00) or if meeting in Logan Square is more convenient for you, meet at the Milshire at 2525 N. Milwaukee at 6:00.

If you can make it, please RSVP here.

As a reminder, this is the most recent example of SRO loss in our City, but it's not too late to save it as affordable housing because the developer who wants to buy it hasn't finalized any transaction. We will be there to support the preservation of the building as affordable housing and also to promote our work on the Chicago for All Ordinance and Coalition.

The tenants union of the Milshire Hotel SRO have come to a settlement requiring tenants to move out by Sept. 2 in exchange for a cash settlement. (Lenny Gilmore)

    By Megan Crepeau, @crepeau, RedEye

Residents of the beleaguered Milshire Hotel agreed Wednesday to move out by 5 p.m. Sept. 2 in exchange for $4,000 per unit and a promise that owners of the single-room occupancy building will not attempt to collect back rent.

Tenants of the Milshire, 2525 N. Milwaukee Ave., have been tussling with management since April, when residents were notified of plans to sell the building and told to vacate. Some residents stayed and formed a tenants union, arguing that they had not been given proper eviction notices and that conditions at the building were so bad that making them leave would be a public hazard. About 18 residents remain in the building, said Tim Mahnke, Milshire tenant and president of the tenants union.

An ordinance passed by the City Council last month prohibits the city from issuing permits for SRO redevelopment for six months or until updated SRO regulation is passed.

In the meantime, if all goes according to plan, the Milshire will stand empty after Labor Day. But the Milshire saga isn't over—a rumored sale to controversial developer Mark Fishman still may be in the works, and the city has filed a legal complaint against the building for its extreme bed bug infestation.

Logan square eagle monument

Does anyone know who takes care of the park around the eagle monument in logan square. I recently moved back to logan square and this past Saturday i took my kids for a walk around the eagle monument and found teenagers smoking weed and a lot of bums around the park area around the eagle monument.
it's sad to see a beautiful area go to waste when it can be taken care of for the residents of logan square to enjoy.
Please help by passing the word out so that the area around the eagle can be cleaned and taken care of so our children and enjoy it.

  • I can't speak for everyone but in my case I don't want my kids to be around people smoking weed. Maybe it's because I was raised in a time when respect meant something and when cursing public was bad.

Dilapidated store fronts on Kedzie and Armitage?

Hi all. Does anyone know the story of the store fronts attached to the Walgreens on Kedzie and Armitage? There aren't any "for lease" signs, but it's a serious waste of space and I hate that they are just sitting there. Thanks for any info.

  • Anybody have contact info for the building's owner?

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

From what the guys at the video store said, the smoke shop is expanding AND a coffee shop is going in. My guess is that the smoke shop's inside (west) wall will extend all the way to the north wall so the coffee shop doesn't have to share an awkward entrance with it.

Hey Guys, It's nice to see the enthusiasm for political change in Humboldt Park! I'm one of Adam Corona's Campaign Coordinators working in the office located at 2547 W North Avenue.

First I'd like to take a moment and thank those taking the time to do their homework on this upcoming election, without a concerned and informed voter base politics the 26th ward is susceptible to unaccountable career politicians. It seems that the posters here have a few potential hesitations for the Corona Campaign, and hopefully I can clear up the confusion.

Adam has worked with the local police and has been involved with CAPS programs for much of the past decade. Although I am unaware of what statement he might have made to raise eyebrows in Smith Park I am aware that he is currently planning on returning to the area for Community Meeting in the near future. Adam is very concerned with street and public safety and I'm sure he would appreciate to have those concerns raised while he is speaking. A couple of us here have worked on other political campaigns such as myself who worked on the Campaign to elect Will Guizzardi, others have invested their time and efforts into community by working in either security or community organization committees.

Also Adam is currently the Sanitation Superintendent for the 45th ward, however the Alderman of the 45th ward is none other than John Arena, the only Chicago Alderman to have been adopted by the Northside DFA and one of the more entrenched members of the Progressive Caucus. If there is one thing I have learned for fact in Chicago Politics it is that Progressives and Machine Democrats hardly if ever see eye to eye during the election cycles. If elected Adam is planning on working with the Progressive caucus to establish more accountable representation within the 26th ward and trying to bring an end to the type of Machine politics that have lead to disproportionate spending of the wards available resources.

Fire Department hiring

My husband and I just went to lunch at Van Phat and a Chicago Fireman was handing out brochures. They are looking to hire firefighters. The test dates are December 13th and 14th, and the deadline for sign up is September 16th
He said they give the test every ten years. The website is: www.cityofchicago.org/fire application.

  • Giving the test every ten years is ridiculous. Even if they don't think they need to give the test more often because they have armloads of applicants, the test should be given every year at least. It's organizational nepotism, just a slightly more subtle version than Chicago has been infamous for.

I have had Comcast for both...not good internet would go down and the tech support was horrible! AT&T Internet has been good except they charged me a lot to fix a small issue with my apartments phone line. I have DirecTv mid-range package which has worked for me and my family (wife amd two toddler daughters). They provide equipment and usually give you free NFL Sunday Ticket free for first year(if you are football fan might be a draw). Only complaints are service going out with really bad weather (maybe lasts for 5is mins), canceling Sunday Ticket is a hassle (have to wait until the start of the next year's season, like Aug., before you can do so) and the occasional sales calls (every 6-8 weeks). But theydo give a lot of free previews for extra channels so that is a nice bonus! Hope thay helps and welcome tothe neighborhood!

  • We got Uverse the moment it became available in LS several years ago (not kidding, we were the third install). No problems so far.

Seeking local bands!

I would love to know about any local family friendly or kid-oriented bands/musicians that put on a good show and would be interested in a one hour Sunday afternoon "concert" for kids at the Beat Kitchen in Roscoe Village. I'm especially interested in anything ethnically/culturally significant, traditional or experimental that will captivate an audience of under-12-year-olds. Who do you know? What do you like? Send me some links so I can check them all out! Thanks neighbors!

Monument concert / events

Hello,

Does anyone know of a calendar that has the square (centennial monument) concert / gathering events? I walked by yesterday afternoon and there was a dj / dance hapening but I didnt stop as I was running late for a movie. I also missed a concert of a band I like there a few weeks ago, as I didnt see anything about it till the day after it happened. Does anyone have any more info on these / a calendar / etc

Thanks

I have eaten at Las Palma a few times, and it was OK, but the huge selection and not so many customers made me wonder how long the food had been sitting around. The building has 3 boarded up windows that have been staring at the street for years, which is a clear indication that I won't be eating there at least until that is fixed.

Barber shop recommendation in Logan Square

I need to get my ears lowered. I'm just back to Logan Square after a 5-year absence, and need a new barber.

I'm looking for a spot with walk-ins and not more than $20 pre-tip. Willing to wait for a chair in exchange for attention to detail.

Where do you go?

  • Kevin_M Logan Square resident since 2007

Joe's on Fullerton is consistently voted best barber shop in the entire city (according to the Reader). The runner up for two years running is Pete's on Elston. I go back and forth to both. You will get a great haircut at either one, but sometimes the wait gets ridiculous - especially at Pete's. But Pete is a good guy - he offers you a Hamm's on the house, and will even call you when you're on deck if you choose to run some errands before they get to you.

  • Paul Smith EveryBlock co-founder. Logan Square resident.

I wound up going to Yohel's on Fullerton & Mozart, got a solid trim, didn't wait long, $15 + tip.

Show Logan Square Schools Some love by giving some of your time

It's a fun way to give back to the neighborhood. Just 2 hours of your time gets you a drink ticket, a t-shirt, and that warm fuzzy feeling that you did something good for the kids.

The proceeds from the Remix Festival help Friends of Goethe School.

Sign up and get to know your neighbors and have fun. It's easy.

Sunday August 31st is our area of most need. Ask a friend to volunteer with you !
