Recommend Company to do Network and A/V Wiring for New Home?

We are building a new home in Logan Square, and need some expertise on the Network, Audio/Visual wiring design of the house.

Our electrician says he can run the cables any way we'd like, but we were looking for someone who can help with the design, picking the correct materials and making sure the right work is done.

Any recommendations?

To clarify: there is a subset of animals at CACC that are adoptable - selected by CACC (after passing health and temperament tests). Due to lack of resources to test/check every animal and space on the adoption floor, the majority of animals at CACC are not available for direct adoption and need to be pulled by a shelter, rescue or foster group. If you as an individual see an animal at CACC that is not on the adoption floor, you can work with a shelter or foster network to try to foster or adopt that animal. Complete info is here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/CACC-Transfer-Team/226541667442185?sk=info&tab=page_info

Petfinder is a terrific resource for doing local, breed-specific searches for adoptable animals, but as was stated above, it is a directory of listings only. Petfinder itself is not responsible for the information that is posted by the shelters that use it, or the outcomes of any adoption applications. Each rescue group is responsible for its own content, policy and communications.

Christmas trees??

I finally live in an apartment with very tall ceilings and am very excited to have a nice, tall Christmas tree this year. Any suggestions for where I can go in the area to buy a tree this year??

  • Used to go to Gethsemane even though it was far (it was close to my mom's and we had a tradition of buying our trees together). For the past couple of years, I've gone to Christy Weber on Grand. Trees have held their needles well.

  • Thank you all for the tips!!!

TRIBUNE: Fate of STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK signs

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:
1. in street mounted signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK are visual cue that enhances Pedestrian Safety. Milwaukee Ave location has 25,000 vehicles/day AND is heavily used by pedestrians day & evening on City designated PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET in heart of vibrant Logan Square business district.
2. signs are intrinsically subject to wear/damage and getting plowed over by (idiot) drivers
3. CDOT/City annual budget should anticipate replacement cost for these signs, like replacement of Stop, Tow Zone, No Parking etc which come from City budget, not Alderman ward menu funds
4. Red Light and Schools/Parks cameras bring in ~$100,000,000 per yr. It's not Mayor Emanuel slush fund to plug police overtime etc. Public Safety & real leadership means: take some of that $ and pay to replace damaged signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK as needed.

The DUI KING of City Council, Alderman Rey Colon offered this comment in Tribune: "These signs are very popular with constituents who request them often," Colon said. But he said the average life of the signs "is like freshly cut flowers that wither and die."

Alderman: it's time for your political career to do the same.

  • I'm impressed the Tribune was able to get a response out of Colon. I've contacted his office in the past about that very sign at Sawyer & Milwaukee and been ignored. I live on the west side of Milwaukee and it actually discourages me from visiting businesses on the east side of Milwaukee since it is so dangerous to cross there without the sign. There was a huge difference in the frequency of people stopping before and after the sign was placed there.

  • The pedestrian crosswalks is a nice concept if they actually worked.

Then they went under a porch and carefully broke out a window and stole my Felt MP bicycle (see picture) and a few hand tools. They returned the very next night but I secured the emergency release on the garage door so they ripped holes into the sides of my garage until they made a 12 by 18 inch hole to clime through. This time they were prepared with transportation and removed my snow thrower, air compressor and a stove among smaller items. My garage door had to be replaced because they tried to pry it up destroying it in the process. Please look at my bicycle because it is very rare and only a few sold in Chicago I believe. Thank You.

For those of us who would like to see Alderman MALdonado ousted, I suggest that we 'get on the same page' for the upcoming elections in February if we wish to succeed.

Currently, there are 2 other candidates running against MALdonado. One is Juanita Irizarry and the other is Adam Corona.

The problem with having 2 other opponents is that they could very well "split the vote" thereby allowing MALdonado a win. Yes, I understand that the winner must still secure at least 50% of the vote, and I personally do not wish to see a run-off election (thinking of taxpayer dollars here.)

Remember, the goal is to OUST MALdonado!

My intention with this post is NOT to get into a deep discussion about either candidate, because this is exactly what will lead to a vote split! Bear with me here.... At face value, Irizarry seems way ahead of Corona in terms of community involvement. Also, I spoke with several community leaders that I respect, and they highly recommend Irizarry.
And, one community leader even indicated to me that s(he) has asked Corona to withdraw from the election specifically to avoid a vote-split. If you are not a fan of second-hand information, then I hereby officially ask Adam Corona to withdraw from the election and throw his support behind Irizarry.

So, I suggest that we throw our combined support behind Irazziry. No, I do not work for her. I have never even met her. I just took a quick look at both candidates with info on the Internet and this blog-site. I don't want to over-complicate it. Unless some egregious info surfaces about Irizarry before election day, she's getting my vote. Remember, the goal is to defeat MALdonado. And based on what I am seeing, I think Irazziry is the stronger of the 2 candidates.

Let's do it, together! Let's send MALdonato packing - well deserved and overdue!

  • Continuation from above:

Maldando have claimed that his low income construction projects will bring jobs to the area but the construction crew that they would use in our area would not be from here. So, start approaching big business to support yourselves and all of us.

You do not seem to have the political connection people expect from politicians but you could develop business connections and that is where you could win. We do not need more politicians. We need better business community so that we can give people jobs and bring them up from their low income and unemployed situation. The present situation is a trap. More low income and unemployed people in an area without jobs is a disaster. More jobs will attract voters.

I know a politician who have extensive experiences competing in elections for alderman positions in the city of Chicago. If you get started I will put you in contact with this person.

So if you register yourselves as a contesting alderman and start approaching business let's meet and discuss the competing strategy with the goal to win the election of being the next alderman in Humboldt Park.

I look froward to hear weather you really are interested or not. It will need a lot of work but then you will get an income of about 100K for as long as you can grab on to the alderman position.

Also, I have extensive experience in building powerful support for new ideas through local, national and international campaigns.

With all due respect for Nice Neighbor but the deadline for signature turn in is this Monday the 24th. Any contestant would need to provide around 460 confirmed registered voters from the ward who have not signed for another candidate using petitions provided to them by the board of elections. As the three candidates that are running have already submitted these petitions the odds of finding the needed amount, confirming them and getting them notarized is virtually impossible. At this stage it is more productive to learn about those who are running so people can begin the discourse about what the ward needs.

I want your happy chickens eggs!

Anyone in Humboldt Park raising chickens, interested selling eggs? I am located around Division and Spaulding and would love to buy some local eggs. Sadness eggs are the pitts. I go through a dozen eggs every two weeks or so.

  • mb in ukie village longtime resident of Ukrainian Village

"Sadness eggs" ? Why, because of how the chickens are treated? If it's eggs from humanely treated chickens you want, make sure you check out the Amish supplier. Some Amish have been caught mistreating their farm animals and for running puppy mills.

  • I would recommend signing up with FarmMatch dot com, it gives a list of local farms, what they sell, and "drop points" where you can pick up your happy eggs, etc. You customize your food preferences (as in if you are vegetarian, you don't select the farms who are selling only meat) so that you only see the farms that are selling what you're after. There are more than a couple of drop points near you, including a friend of mine at Kedzie and Spaulding.

Tuxedo cat seen and outdoor cat shelter needed

Is anyone missing a tuxedo cat? I'm assuming it's a stray because it's relatively thin. She's a really friendly cat though. She let me pet her when I walked up to her and rolled on her belly for me to pet it.

I didn't bring her inside because I'm pretty sure she's a stray and my cats would kill her, but I just wanted to post this just in case.

On that note, does anyone make winter cat shelters? I know they're easy to make and I can do it myself but if anyone has any handy I'd like to put some in my area for the season.

Thanks!

We have been in the neighborhood a little over 20 years and I would say this behavior comes in waves. I do recommend having a can of paint or graffiti remover yourself as it is best just to cover/remove these tags as quickly as you can. The taggers will get bored of your garage more quickly then and will choose a different target. Talk to your neighbors and work together to communicate about any tagging or suspicious activity.

As far as worrying...I wouldn't lose any sleep over this as it is random and nothing against you personally.

You guys have been so awesome with these donations. Last time I dropped them off, the woman who runs the shelter had tears in her eyes and said please tell those Everyblock folks "thank you" and how much this means to us and the animals.

The animal shelter is in need again so I'm making another round picking up donations if you're able to donate/have old linens laying around.

This open-access shelter has very little funds and takes in many animals. They also provide a pet pantry for people who can't afford dog/cat food for their pets. It's so sad when you see people drop off their loved pets because they no longer can afford them. This pet pantry, which is running very, very low, helps keeps animals in their loving homes (and out of these open-access shelters).

Here's a list of items they need most:
- dog and cat food (any kind)
- treats to help fatten up the underweight dogs (actual dog treats or Aldi hot dogs are good, cheaper option)
- calming toys (such as stuffed animals or kongs and peanut butter - please no squeeky/stimulating toys)
- used (clean) towels, sheets and blankets for dogs/cats to lay on in the cages they're in basically 24/7. It helps lower their stress and gives them comfort.
- medications your pet didn't finish. These animals often come in sick from being on the street -- any antibiotics, pain pills or supplements help. There is a vet there that prescribes them and will use donated meds appropriately.
- Rescue Remedy or other calming supplements/sprays etc. (shelter life can be stressful)
- dog leashes, collars

I can pick up donations from your house Friday (8/1)12-1:30pm or 5-7pm. Or you are welcome to drop off at my place near North ave and California today 7/28 after 5pm or Wednesday after 7pm. Please message me for details.

Thank you SO MUCH for your generosity. The dogs and cats thank you.

  • I just emailed you. Please let me know if it doesn't get through for some reason. I'm new here!

Hi good folks of EB!

I'll be dropping off the donations on Sat Oct 25, so there's plenty of time. I can pick up at your house or you can drop off at mine (near North and California Aves - message me for phone number and address).

Here's the list:
- dog or cat beds
- towels, blankets, anything clean, warm and fuzzy they can lay on
- treats of any kind
- dog and cat food (for the pet food pantry so people in need can keep their beloved animals and those animals stay out of these kinds of kill shelters)
- toys: chew toys (like nyla bones or kongs) and non-stimulant stuffed toys (no squeekers please - gets them too riled up in their cages)
- puppy potty training pads (there's a huge shortage of workers/volunteers, so they don't get walked often. If they have these, it means they don't have to sit in their pee/feces and it helps reduce the spread of disease.
- cleaning products of any kind to help keep the place disinfected
- heating pads (for kittens, bunnies or even the little squirrels they help nurse back to health)
- leftover dog or cat medicines or vitamins

I was just there on Monday and would love to get them stocked up on towels/beds etc so all the animals have somewhere warm and comfortable to lay (it really helps reduce stress for them).

I've attached some pictures from the last run I did for donations from you great folks! You can see the animals really love the blankets and beds! :)

And if you're thinking of adopting or want to foster some of these sweet babies, hit me up! More foster homes = we can get more of these animals out of kill shelters!

Thanks so much folks!

Nothing's set up right now, but if there's interest let me know and I can organize - I'm open to suggestions for days, times, and venues. Thanks!

Josh - are you still setting up Home Brewers meetings? Last post I see was for May 1st

  • Yes, we're still having meetings and have become a pretty active group we're calling the "Logan Brewlevard Society". You can find our group on Facebook - if you have problems finding it you can contact me directly. Thanks!

About those EB Daily Digest Crime Reports...

Sometimes the crime listed is not readily understood from the description. The link below is to the Illinois State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Offense Codes. You can get the crime from the EB Daily Digest, then refer to the Codes for the applicable IL statute, then just Google the statute number found under ILCS Reference.

E.G., Deceptive Practice: Unauthorized Videotaping, 720-5/26-4.

Offense Codes: https://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/6-260.pdf

(The CPD CLEARMAP pages also attempt to define the crimes, but not nearly as well: http://gis.chicagopolice.org/clearmap/crime_types.html .)

Any Condo Building Maintenance/Landscaping/Snow Shoveling Recommendations?

Hi Neighbors,

Our 6 unit building is looking for a maintenance service provider to do basic cleaning of common areas, minor landscaping, and snow shoveling. Do you have any recommendations? we are self managed and need someone ASAP.

Thanks!

My handyman lives near Fullerton and California, and walks all the way. He does light maintenance and lawn work for two buildings that I manage, and is honest, truthful, and reliable. He lives closer to those two buildings than you, and whenever there is a lot of snow, he's on board. I have no problem giving him keys to the building (not the apartments). He does also the yard work for a neighbor two doors away from one of the properties, and I'm sure she would vouch for him as well. If you're interested, LMK, and I can give you his name/phone #.

Need HVAC

Greetings fellow neighbors-

Need of your expertise/advise on this matter. My furnace's circulating water pump is making a loud noise when starting and the noise continues while operational. Can anyone recommend a solution and/or reasonable HVAC technician?

Thank you, all.

  • @Morgan-- Love radiators. We kept ours, too, and did SpacePak for air conditioning. It is expensive, but there is no way that we wanted to switch to forced air. Rough estimate is ~$12,000 for a 1600 sf floor.

  • i am an hvac tech in chicago 25 years exp. the noise from your pump if it is a series 100 B&G is from the spring coupler between the motor and impeller housing. it is a reasonable repair. u can reach me at 773 988 2093 if u need assitance

New building at North & California?

Anyone know what's going up right next to Erie Family Health on North Ave. (just East of California)? Probably condos or something, but I can't find any information.. Not sure what the address is, maybe 2742-2748 W. North?

  • It's not 'Old Chicago' anymore...you should check out what is being built on the 1800 block of Whipple...so many angles, so little windows. Listed as a '2 story private resident' ..then if you go on the website it is an 'art gallery.
AND the vacant lot was a rat village so we are getting those guys as well

  • There's also a vacant empty lot/grass & garbage field just a couple buildings west of this one i posted about, on North just west of California. I think it just got bought this summer, so we'll see what happens there.
