M:y husband found this dog this morning. He doesn't have a collar and is not neutered. He's safe now in our yard, but we will need to call Animal Control later this afternoon as we have two dogs of our own that are rather territorial. Please message me if this is your pup!

Norweigan Hospital try to change zoning for huge 4 story Housing Development

The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

http://www.useful-community-development.org/re-zoning-opposition.html
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate law/zoning/proposed_rezoning_change.htm
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/zoning/object_neighbor_zoning.htm

Let's keep this discussion ongoing on this site until this is resolved. Please tell others.

  • We need to have breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks somewhere in the neighborhood. There's a spot on the corner of Washtenaw and Chicago that's been dubbed by the bartender as the "Cursed Corner" because no business has ever made it there. I say we meet there and at least talk about moving forward.

  • Don't forget, most public library branches have meeting room facilities as well. The state attorney general, and the Chicago Bar Association are examples of organizations to contact to get free legal advice/help. This forum and knocking on your neighbor's doors are probably the best way to contact interested parties. Again, pictures/renderings of what is proposed will go far to explain the situation.

Wisconsin Day trip from Chicago - Fall Foliage

Hi, I'm looking for a destination in the south part of WI that would be great for a fall foliage day trip. I'm looking for some good walking/hiking trails, beautiful scenery.

Thanks

  • Kettle Moraine State Park in Wisconsin is beautiful. Farther afield is Devils Lake State Park for great hiking...

  • Try Bristol, Wisconsin for hiking. If you just want a view, Holy Hill is beautiful.

Kids selling Tribune subscriptions

Does anyone else have kids coming to their house every other week trying to sell subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune? It's almost always after 7 o'clock at night and always the same thing: it's for school and when you tell them you don't want the subscription they ask for a donation. Does anyone give money to people at their door? Kind of annoyed by it.

She also figured out the antique turn doorbell that baffled my ups driver.

Mozzarella sticks??

been dying for some crispy, gooey mozzarella sticks in Logan square. Any suggestions?? Those soggy balls at boiler room don't count, and I haven't seen them on any menus nearby- I gotta be missing something!

  • AbaZaba16 have you been to Leonas since the family sold it? We went once recently and the entire menu was gutted and replaced with a generic italian restaurant one, i didn't note if they had mozzarella sticks or not though.

  • Ugh, I feel like some I've been to have been diff than others, but that they still had them. Not 100% though, sucks they were bought. I did notice things had changed a bit, such as what they give you with an entree. Lame.

I saw Rangoli was already mentioned but I skimmed the comments and didn't see Nick's on North. If you need a fast food fix that's the place to go. It's really, really good (especially the gyros) and the owner/staff are even better. We used to go there ALL the time but still make pretty regular trips for no longer living around the corner (essentially where you are now). (I'm sure my arteries still hate me.)

Mcdonalds 2707 N Milwaukee

I don't understand why ever time this Mcdonalds has a promotional event for kids, the signs are only in Spanish. Do they not want any English speaking kids at these events? This is an ongoing thing for this Mcdonalds and I find it very insulting.
Does anyone else think this is wrong??

  • Carter O'Brien lager beer rioter

I'm not seeing how Robin's experience equates to Godwin's Law. This came to mind:

    http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2013/09/hendersons_godw.html

"When people in a political discussion want to put down other people who even mention Hitler, they will invoke Godwin's Law even if the person compared no one to Nazis or Hitler."

That said, I could care less how McDonald's advertises as far as language. If anything, most people's distaste comes from how they target children with their happy meal toys. It's the Espanol-speakers that ought to be offended here, if anyone.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

I worked in marketing. There's a lot of importance placed on language spoken in the home. That's the language of family and friends... brands want to be your friend. When you see an ad in Spanish next time assume this and don't be offended or assume that the targeted audience doesn't know English. They most likely do.

1700 Block of Drake

My Husband, Daughter and I took a walk the other day and found a house we would like to purchase on the 1700 block of Drake, about 6 blocks form our current home on the North side of Armitage. Please let me know what your thoughts are in that particular block and the area in general. I have lived in Logan, Armitage/Kedzie area since 2000 but, before making a purchase, we would like to hear more about the general feeling of the area, especially now that we have a young child. Thanks in advance for anything that you might have to offer, I appreciate it!

  • Simons Park to the South with the Bloomingdale Trail/606 to the North and I believe there to be space for new builds right on the Trail. Its an ideal spot. You also have an Elementary School just west.

Great Location. The area seems to weathered the downturn well and crime on that particular block is light if nonexistent.

At both Damen and Western there is a major road that the second stairwells bypass. The subway and interstate stations are whole other animals that can't really be viewed as the same category as these legacy stations.

Obviously in an ideal world you'd have it. Given the financial and space restrictions that everyone has mentioned though, it seems to make sense to just have the one...at least in my mind.

I cannot think of another north side blue line stop that does, but maybe my memory isn't so good. Are there red line stops with only one entrance / exit?

If any of us want to petition the CTA about this at some point in future, it'd be useful to recognize how rare this phenomena is.

Hey Michael - was not intending to throw any negativity into the mix. If it sounded like I was, my apologies. I fully admit I have a true love / hate relationship with bikers. Ones that follow the rules of the road, or at least don't do anything that may cause harm, I'm all for. I see a lot of bikers, however, that should not be riding on city streets, especially ones without bike lanes. They don't seem to have the appropriate spatial ability to discern how close they are to parked cars vs moving cars. During rush hours, having those types of riders on certain roads can cause a great deal of havoc. And yes, I say the same thing about crappy drivers as well.

  • Not everyone can bike, but if more who could would, the congestion around Humboldt Park wouldn't be so bad. The original poster is right - trying to drive in this city during rush hour can be depressing - literally so, in fact. Biking on Chicago's streets can be intimidating at first, but everyone starts somewhere. I ride from the Humboldt Park area to the west loop every day and would be happy to ride along with anyone who is interested by nervous about doing so alone.

Biking to public transit may also be an option for those who are sick of being stuck in traffic. The transit coverage in Humboldt Park leaves much to be desired, but the transit options expand greatly for anyone willing to bike a mile or so (approximately 5 minutes of biking at a moderate pace).

Forming a ceramics/pottery co-op!

Hello, we are in the process of forming co-op for ceramicists that need a space to throw and fire their work. The goal is to pool our resources together so that we can get a space where we can work. We can also use this space to have monthly gallery openings so that we can show our work to the neighborhood. We have three people interested so far, anyone on here interested?

Also, does anyone know of potential places where we could set up a kiln? It would have to be a place that we could vent, like somewhere that used to be equipped for a kitchen.

Thanks neighbors!

No collar but he is chipped.

They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

  • I just like this the best: I thank the world for people like me who step up and DO something. Must feel amazing to pat yourself on the back so much??

It's unfortunate to see so many vocal members of a constituency dissatisfied with the level and quality of service that is currently being provided. But where ever there is someone dissatisfied with the conditions they face there is also the potential for change. For those of you interested in a potential change of pace candidate, who has experience as a Union member, a Business owner and a city services worker and aims to unite the entirety of the 26th ward take a look at Adam Corona.

Hi good folks of EB!

The shelter is (again) in desperate need of the following items if you're able to donate (used items are more than ok, they just need to be clean).

I'll be dropping off the donations on Sat Oct 25, so there's plenty of time. I can pick up at your house or you can drop off at mine (near North and California Aves - message me for phone number and address).

Here's the list:
- dog or cat beds
- towels, blankets, anything clean, warm and fuzzy they can lay on
- treats of any kind
- dog and cat food (for the pet food pantry so people in need can keep their beloved animals and those animals stay out of these kinds of kill shelters)
- toys: chew toys (like nyla bones or kongs) and non-stimulant stuffed toys (no squeekers please - gets them too riled up in their cages)
- puppy potty training pads (there's a huge shortage of workers/volunteers, so they don't get walked often. If they have these, it means they don't have to sit in their pee/feces and it helps reduce the spread of disease.
- cleaning products of any kind to help keep the place disinfected
- heating pads (for kittens, bunnies or even the little squirrels they help nurse back to health)
- leftover dog or cat medicines or vitamins

I was just there on Monday and would love to get them stocked up on towels/beds etc so all the animals have somewhere warm and comfortable to lay (it really helps reduce stress for them).

I've attached some pictures from the last run I did for donations from you great folks! You can see the animals really love the blankets and beds! :)

And if you're thinking of adopting or want to foster some of these sweet babies, hit me up! More foster homes = we can get more of these animals out of kill shelters!

Thanks so much folks!

Any local rescue or similar that accept dry cat food donations (*opened bags*). I've gone through a few partial bags of food while switching my cat to something new. Rather than throw out perfectly good cat food, I'd like to at least try and donate.

One container is a mix of 3 flavors of Nature's Variety Instinct Grain Free (Duck, Rabbit, Chicken). Maybe 2 or 3 lbs worth. And the other is a 5 lbs. or so bag of the same brand, salmon flavor. None of them sat well with my cat for whatever reason.

Halloween Decorations 2014

Hello neighbors! Just wanted to say, it is great to see more seasonal décor going up. If you have never thought about doing so, remember that it helps the overall look/appearance of the neighborhood. It may seem like a small thing, but it makes the n'hood look more inviting. Please rake leaves, pickup trash, put up some lights, Halloween or autumnal décor(if you're into that sort of thing). Tend to shrubbery, trees and gardens. And if you have a porch light, please use it. Lights can deter a lot of mischief. Let's keep the neighborhood on track of looking great, as we have been doing!!

Hello, I recently sold my place and was looking toward the California & Rockwell area. Not to familiar with the area, like how there is some cool restaurants a few blocks away. Always hear on the news about crime and gang activity in Logan square. Is this a good area to move?

thanks for the help!

TOO many hippies, i mean hipsters.

I live just north of Diversey and West of California, great residential neighborhood, low crime, my nephew was a Chicago Police Officer in this district and told me our area is one of the safest in the district. Friendly people, well kept homes, prices have gone up, still some bargains around. Your best bet is to go the locations you are interested in, go on different days, different times, drive & walk around the area, up & down the side streets & main streets, do this often and you will know where you feel like 'home'. I've lived here for many years, thru the ups & downs of the area. Transportation is great, walk to Blue Line, take it downtown, O'Hare & Midway, Kennedy Expressway is 2 blocks from me, shopping is great & many nearby restaurants, can't beat this location.

Ronny's Bar Project/Golden Teardrops Happening?

Anyone in the know know what happened or is going to happen with the Ronny's bar conversion that was planned by some of the Longman and Eagle/Parsons folks? They were going to totally rehab Ronny's bar. I see they initially applied for permits back in June and July...as referenced below...but there seems to have been no activity since. I'm curious if they're still going to move ahead. It would be nice to have that eyesore renovated.

7 AM Lawn Mowing - Very Loud

Is anybody else having consistent issues with a lawn moving company showing up at 7AM on weekends and mowing? These guys are using two standing mowers and a push mower at once plus leaf blowers. Needless to a say it is incredibly loud - so loud that it wakes us up three stories up across the street. Corner of Schubert and St. Louis.

  • You can call 911 and report a noise disturbance. Per the city they are not supposed to start that early. Don't bother with 311 for this.

  • That would make sense Mccoy...why spend that kind of dough in October/November when you can really spruce it up in Spring. Hopefully that's their plan.

  • Being Fall and especially with all the rain we've had recently, it wouldn't make much sense to repair the area now. Just be sure that the money is in the pipeline for Spring. A committee sounds like a wonderful idea (inviting all opinions) to sort out 2015 plans. Run the idea through your Alderman's office and invite the CAPS Beat representative as well. Organize!

I used an Angies List Deal for garage door *servicing* and had excellent results. In timeliness of scheduling and arrival, as well as the service. The company seems to do door service and installation. The service tech that came lives in the south Irving Park neighborhood and said the company was trying to expand in this area, and that he would get calls for the area. But I cannot speak for their installation service.

Comcast outage?

Anybody else in the 1700 block area of Kedzie have flashing lights on their modem? Started about 2:30 PM today,

  • Best Buy has modems you can buy to replace the rental for about $100 or less -- you'll earn it back in less than a year. And yes, use a different solution for wifi and phone -- better options are available.

  • Jim Mitchell 11-year Logan Square resident

If you buy a modem, you will have to call Comcast to get it registered so that they recognize the device, but that's a minor inconvenience and takes five minutes.

  • It's weird, I saw rats in NYC when I lived there several times a day. In Philly, several times a week. In Chicago- I've seen maybe three in three years.
I'm guessing after writing this, I will probably see them all the time.

Vintage Record Player Console Repair

Hi Neighbors! I inherited a vintage RCA Victor Console Record player from the mid 60s. Parts of it work, and parts don't. I don't know what I'm doing, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of shops who might be able to take a look at this.

If anyone knows of a place that does house calls that would be great, because the entire unit is about 100lbs.

I did find an old thread on EveryBlock and some people recommended a few such as Deltronics, 20th Centruy and Mina's TV & Video, the last of which will come and pick up. Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks!

  • Anthony's Electronic Service on Irving Park and Broadway has fixed two turn tables for me. Just read the reviews.

  • Tanner at Uncharted books just had his console record player fixed. He said he knows a guy that fixes this type of record player. You might want to stop in there and ask him.
