I am really interested in pairing my wardrobe down to what is called a "capsule wardrobe" (i.e. around 30 clothing items that can be mixed and matched in stylish ways for fall/winter). Does anyone know of any affordable stylists/organizers who could help me with this task?

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

  • @Ericka S. I was going to suggest you for the organizing! Nice to learn you team up with a wardrobe consultant too.

  • Wow! So many options now! This is great. Do any of you do consignment deals for the items/clothes you take away?

I want all the people who said in the last thread about this and Trader Joe's and that it would never happen to raise their hands. Tx. That said, that is going to make that intersection SO different, no parking. And why an orchard? Am I the only person who doesn't get why we are getting an orchard? Are we all going to be able to go pick the apples in this tiny orchard? Who benefits from that?

  • We won that orchard. Had nothing to do with the development, it is on CTA land (is that all now part of the deal, sort of confusing) at the very north end of the site. See this link for info about the orchard: http://www.chicagorarities.org/.

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

Does anyone recognize this dog?

Found at the corner of Armitage and Kimball in the parking lot of Armitage produce. Neighbors are taking her to animal control, so if this dog is familiar please let it's people know where to look. We will post signs as well.

  • I'm so glad you were able to find the dog's home! Such a wonderful display of concern and generosity on here. Well done, EB neighbors! Your kindness truly restores my faith in humanity.

  • Hello Everyone!

My neighbor texted me to let me know Pinta is home! Thank you everyone!

Fresh MarketPlace open date?

Thw owner said mid-September, but you'd think we would have heard about the opening date if it was around now. Does anyone have any info on the new grocery store on Western?

  • The failed inspection reports just seemed to indicate that most of the issues were things they hadn't received from the city yet (like an appropriate dumpster, etc): http://chicago.everyblock.com/food-inspections/sep11-fresh-market-place-failed-inspection-6385102/. I'm not super worried.

A close reading of that inspection indicates that an awful lot of what they were failed over is things that were not physically even on the premises at the time the inspection took place. Those are pieces that had not been supplied, and could be on back order, either by the vendor who did the installation, or the company being contracted for their waste disposal. Not a big deal. Just seems a bit like a rush job, or they had locked down the date for inspection, and as things tend to happen. The job is taking longer than they originally anticipated, and planned when they broke ground.

3. This Riot Fest is a reckless use of the park for the organizers to make money and take away the use of the park for citizens that live in the neighborhood.

4. As for myself I have contacted the Alderman and I will protest all the way to city hall if I have too. This type of festival belongs in Northerly Island away from neighborhoods where small children go to bed at 8pm and there is plenty of parking.

  • A lot of street festivals shut down neighborhoods. The PR Parade and weekend bled totally into Logan and messed up traffic and to be honest, a lot of other stuff. I will leave it at that. It is what it is. Every weekend the farmers market in Logan messes up my errands I have to run. Riot Fest has messed up my commute to work this entire week. I still think HP benefits from this.

  • Alan is right You're wrong.

"Our neighborhood" this is the point you are missing. Everyone else that lives here, me included sees the benefits outweighs the minor inconvenience. There are 3 weekend fests on milwaukee that shut that down for 3 days for each one.
I'm not trying to get any of those shut down under the guise of "our neighborhood" doesn't like it. You as one person can't speak for the neighborhood. These comments that show 95% of the neighborhood approved it shows just that.

Some constructive advice for next year. (Don't get me wrong, fun times, but much room for improvement)

1. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Put some more thought into the design/layout.
a. There were many dangerous bottlenecks, got lucky nothing went wrong as the lack of function would have crushed people (especially where along the curvy roads with the metal barriers) IE The flow would have been much safer if the vendors were set up 20 feet off the roads instead of right on them, or if there were another way for the masses to move rather than just the roads.
b. Somehow you made one of the largest parks in the city seems like an overcrowded rat maze… poor spacial layout and very little thought into how people walk, and how to get people form stage to stage

2. Add way more port-o-johns, average wait was over 20 minutes after 6pm

3. Make the maps accurate...The mobile app, was misleading. It was stressed multiple times to download the app, and we did. One problem was that the water stations were not located correctly, and I think they were missing all together in areas. Had this been a hot weekend could have been bad situation. Also, the one water station we did find was quite a disappointment...

4. 3 Day Passes did not have wrist bands… why not? One could not leave and come back.. stinks

5. VIP is practically worthless. Who cares about free drinks. The benefit of having a ticket (minus the re-entry) has diminished ten fold and compared to many other festivals standards, hardly deserves a VIP title. Viewing areas were not VIP. bathrooms were same as other bathrooms, just shorter lines, and

thanks for reading

  • Riot Fest isn't a quaint little festival, it's a multi-market event and has been for years, (2014 cities are Toronto, Chicago and Denver). Interesting sidebar - Colorado's event was moved in the 11th hour this year after Arapahoe County (CO) refused to grant them a temporary land use permit, citing traffic and safety concerns that occurred at the 2013 event. Colorado's 2014 event is being held in a stadium setting.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

    Hi Kelly.

I actually did read the thread, and even better, I experienced many of the same things you experienced (!). I got shoved, crowd pushed, bottlenecked, and despite being 6', found it hard to see the edge of the crowd at times (let's not even talk abt trying to get to the edge quickly).

The only difference is I'm not utterly shocked by what I experienced.

    Geez...

When I returned it was gone, though a hubcap was still on the sidewalk.

The person I talked to at the police station said that it is likely that someone perhaps with a tow truck saw it was broken down and took it. It would have been very hard to get gas for it and steal it in the time I was gone. I do have all the keys.

If anyone was in the area at the time or saw anything suspicious, please let me know. Thank you so much.

Buying commercial real estate?

Does anyone have experience with, or can refer me to someone who has, buying commercial real estate? My business is losing its lease in a few years, and I'm considering buying something with maybe an apartment attached? It's very difficult for us to find space because we have pretty unique space requirements, so I'd rather not have to worry about leases ending ever again.

I know the rules for commercial are different from residential, so I'd love to just casually get some info without any pressure. Or, if you have experience, you can post your story here...

Thanks, everyone!

Hard to believe

Such mixed feelings on how the neighborhoods changed.
At Sawyer and Wrightwood. Apparently this 20-year-old white girl has called the cops because someone hit her bumper. Two scratches maybe.

  • Small dings and scratch are part of the social contract one agrees to by parking on a public street.

  • Carter O'Brien my kingdom to end the Belmont bus bunching

Well, there is a reason they are called bumpers, right?

But on the other hand, without more details it's hard to know what might have happened. If someone's selfish behavior is going to cost me cash out of pocket, hell yes I'm reporting you. I've had a few times over...

    Read full comment…

Well, there is a reason they are called bumpers, right?

But on the other hand, without more details it's hard to know what might have happened. If someone's selfish behavior is going to cost me cash out of pocket, hell yes I'm reporting you. I've had a few times over the years where cars parked literally on top of my bumper, in those extreme cases I've had to get a buddy and physically lift up and move a car off (in which case I feel no shame stating said car was placed somewhere I assume it got ticketed if not towed).

m123 - let's stay grounded in the discussion as it pertains to Logan Square. I grew up in and around Lake View and Logan Square, and taking the other extreme position and claiming white people only visited the neighborhood to buy drugs is just incorrect.

Most kids avoid gangs. But it's easier to do for some than others. There was no pressure to do so on my block, we had factory workers around who kept the wanna-be tough guys in check. But I had a friend who committed suicide in his early twenties, and I know that one of the things that led to it was his struggle being a non-gang affiliated Mexican kid in Logan Square. He got harassed everywhere he went, he ended up moving, but he still went home to see his parents, friends, etc. He talked about it a lot.

My point was simply that in a city this size there will always be young men who band together and cause varying amounts of trouble. I tell everyone the same thing- adults, get outside and do something positive. Garden. Shovel. Sit on your stoop and talk to your neighbors. Walk your dog. Law abiding "regular" people outnumber the serious thugs by an order of 10 to 1, easy. But complaining on the internet, apathy and letting those people think they own a street and do whatever they want without repercussions will destroy a neighborhood.

How to avoid parking my car on a street cleaning day while I'm on vacay?

I wonder if you guys have a solution to this. I park my car on the streets in Logan Square where no permit is needed. I'll be going out of town for ten days and am afraid that during one of those days they may put up "no parking" signs for cars to be moved during street cleaning days. I don't want my car towed while I'm out of town and unable to move my car.

You might suggest that I have a friend move it but I just moved here and don't know many people yet who would be willing to do that for me. So I need a different solution.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

I live in a three flat in Logan/Avondale and my landlord speaks very little English. He lives in the building and has made it a point to enter my apartment without warning, once I was in the shower and heard a knock on my bathroom door. I freaked out when I heard his voice, got out of the shower, and he was still in my apartment. He has walked up to my roommates sliding glass door (before she hung curtains to prevent him from peering in) he would knock and look into her bedroom until she woke up from his knocking. He has made comments to me when I answer my door shortly after returning home from working out, comments such as "you lookin real good!" then proceeds to stare at me until I hide behind my door and slowly close it. Recently, I came home to a shattered lantern, my balcony table and chairs all moved around. I was scared. The next morning, my roommate sent me a text saying "i think you need to come see this." I walked to the back of our apartment, went out on the balcony only to find our landlord and a couple other guys priming our wrought iron balcony, they had removed all of my lights, moved all of our stuff around, and splattered paint on my table and chairs. I told him he needs to give us 24 hours notice before doing any work like this so I can safely move our belongings and that he needs to reimburse me for the lantern his workers destroyed. He laughed it off. I'm not real sure how to handle this? He has my cell phone number and my roommate's cell phone number, he can easily have his daughter (who speaks perfect English) communicate with us to give us a heads up for any future work that needs to be performed. We really love our neighborhood, don't have any other issues other than the rather pressing issue of feeling a bit sexually harassed by our landlord. I hate to use that term but I'm not sure what else to call it? I don't know what to do about the comments made to me and entering our apartment without notice?

Thank you, llitman. I appreciate your feedback. I have actually been looking at available apartments for the past week or so. I'm also working on a letter with the help of a friend who is an attorney to let my landlord know how he has violated our lease, privacy, and safety. I've got all of my emails saved, the emails to my roommate and a couple of friends, explaining the incidents in which he has made us feel uncomfortable so I have the dates and I can recall the specifics of each instance. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around him knocking on my bathroom door while I was in the shower then refraining from leaving my apartment while he knew I was showering. This is the second time I've lived in a building that is also occupied by the owner/landlord and it just never feels like it's my home, I feel like I'm living in someone else's home and simply paying them for it. I've learned my lesson the hard way, I won't live in a landlord or owner occupied building ever again.

  • The first 2 years if you showed your id(not sure of radius) then you got 2 tix. however, as is always the case when somebody does a nice thing, people received their neighbor tix and then scalped them on the street. That's why you had to have id and went right in instead of getting tix.

I don't know of any other fest that gives away tickets bc of neighbor inconvenience, but everyone these days seems to feel entitled.

Just wondered what the overall vibe is, if it gets packed at certain hours, etc. Has anyone joined - what do you think?

  • I agree with everyone else, its never very crowded and the guy at the front desk is always really nice. The classes are free too, I've taken the yoga and x-fit class' and both are great, and the instructors are nice too. I only live two blocks away so I've never used the locker rooms, but I don't have any complaints, and its going to get bigger. They're going to open a much larger class area as well.

  • I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships,...

I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships, which they are offering until the end of October (not sure how the price works out for those). I like the month to month option, especially since I had no idea if I would like it/want to stay when I first signed up. I have done a bunch of the regularly scheduled yoga classes, which are good. I have also gone to some early-morning (6:30am) pop-up yoga classes, which were great but only had 2 or 3 people. I hope they add regular morning yoga classes, but I have been told by the guy at the front desk that they are planning to push back evening classes and add additional class times as well (they said Sept. 23rd is the planned date for this, but they are notoriously bad about keeping their promises in terms of dates--see: Grand Opening).

TL;DR Definitely worth it to join, especially if you live very close.

Home Organizer recommendation

Hi Everyone...I have recently (ok, not really, but for the sake of argument) downsized from a multi-level townhome to to a unit in a 2-unit building. I have a lot of stuff that I would like some help in clearing out and was looking for an organizer to help me decide what to junk/sell/keep/donate as well as help me stay organized going forward. Any thoughts?

  • Hi VP Girl,
This is Ericka from She Sorts Organizing. I'd love to help you out with your goals to downsize and get organized! I do free 20 minute assessments for folks in the neighborhood. I'm happy to stop by. You can PM me or get me at shesorts@gmail.com, or...

    Hi VP Girl,
This is Ericka from She Sorts Organizing. I'd love to help you out with your goals to downsize and get organized! I do free 20 minute assessments for folks in the neighborhood. I'm happy to stop by. You can PM me or get me at shesorts@gmail.com, or at www.shesorts.com, and we can set up a time.
My advice is, regardless of which company you go with, to make sure that they are properly licensed and insured to come into your home and handle your things. I'm also a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), so I bring a level of ethics, confidentiality, and professional training to ensure you the best experience possible.

Lots of folks can help you go through stuff and arrange it. But a Professional Organizer, trained through NAPO, is uniquely qualified to not only facilitate your decision-making, but to also transfer those organizing skills to you, so you can continue to be happy and organized in your space going forward.

    best,
    Ericka

Thanks again...Ericka, I will send you an email.

Recommendation for gate lock repair?

Hi All! We are looking for someone to fix the lock on our iron gate and also install a mailbox. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

  • Jamie W. East Humboldt Park

I think it was $120 - it took a few hours. They had to remove the old mailbox, prep the iron for the new box, install, and re-paint the iron to make the immediate area look like new again.

  • Monica Over 15 years in the 60622 zip code

Ashland Locks is highly rated on Angie's List and did some work on our front gate to lock it and tie it into our intercom system.

RIOT FEST: How can this be okay?

I'm not sure how long riot feat is supposed to last into the night, but as a new mom it's disturbing to be able to hear the music in my living room (living more than 2 blocks away from the park, at 9pm).

There has to be some sort of noise ordinance against this, right? I didn't pay for a ticket to the festival for a reason, and my child has to suffer because he can't sleep, which then means we all suffer.

I know if my neighbors were playing music loud enough for me to hear in my home I could call 311, but this is ridiculous.

  • Tracy BB Super Cute Tracy

Although, I agree there is no real parking solution, if the parking becomes permit parking for a weekend during RF, then that same permit parking should apply to all fests that happen, for the duration of the fest. Think of all the money the city could make on tickets.

  • I live on Kedzie by the park and can say parking was a huge issue this weekend for me. If my area had neighborhood parking I'm sure it would have been ok. pR parking was way easier as people were coming and going all day.

Riot Fest was louder and longer than PR weekend. But it ended every night at 10. Aside from the last band on Saturday that was so loud my house was shaking I found it less disruptive from a noise perspective. And the noise didn't go on all night long.

The people coming to the neighborhood didn't bother me. In fact because the main box office was on Cali it seemed less crowded people wise than PR weekend.

While RF was inconvenient it was well run and more controlled than other festivals. I might leave town next year to avoid the hassles but whether I do or not I welcome them back. Based on where I live I suspect there are few more unconvinced than I was, but I survived it and can do so again.
