Moving to Chicago!

I posted something similar to this before, but I was wondering about driving time (and received answers mostly relating to commute time via public transportation.)

So, what would the driving time in rush hour to UChicago be from Logan Square, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview? Thanks!

Hi good folks of EB!

The shelter is (again) in desperate need of the following items if you're able to donate (used items are more than ok, they just need to be clean).

I'll be dropping off the donations on Sat Oct 25, so there's plenty of time. I can pick up at your house or you can drop off at mine (near North and California Aves - message me for phone number and address).

Here's the list:
- dog or cat beds
- towels, blankets, anything clean, warm and fuzzy they can lay on
- treats of any kind
- dog and cat food (for the pet food pantry so people in need can keep their beloved animals and those animals stay out of these kinds of kill shelters)
- toys: chew toys (like nyla bones or kongs) and non-stimulant stuffed toys (no squeekers please - gets them too riled up in their cages)
- puppy potty training pads (there's a huge shortage of workers/volunteers, so they don't get walked often. If they have these, it means they don't have to sit in their pee/feces and it helps reduce the spread of disease.
- cleaning products of any kind to help keep the place disinfected
- heating pads (for kittens, bunnies or even the little squirrels they help nurse back to health)
- leftover dog or cat medicines or vitamins

I was just there on Monday and would love to get them stocked up on towels/beds etc so all the animals have somewhere warm and comfortable to lay (it really helps reduce stress for them).

I've attached some pictures from the last run I did for donations from you great folks! You can see the animals really love the blankets and beds! :)

And if you're thinking of adopting or want to foster some of these sweet babies, hit me up! More foster homes = we can get more of these animals out of kill shelters!

Thanks so much folks!

UPDATE: Thanks neighbors! Your donations brought tears to my eyes and the dogs and cats all got their goodies today. It's AMAZING what a toy and a comfy dog bed/towel can do for them in there.

Every single dog got a potty pad (helps keep waste off of them - they're like gold there!!!), a clean towel/blanet/dog bed to lay on, and tons of treats and pets. All thee cats got toys, treats and love too!

There are so many loving, scared animals there. It breaks my heart to leave them. I have created a Facebook album with pics from today. Please take a look (settings should be so anyone can view) and please SHARE with your friends and family. This is really how they get out of there. If you're interested in fostering or fostering-to-adopt, I can find a rescue that will get a dog or cat out of there. If you foster, you will SAVE a LIFE, for real.

Two CTA busses one going North and the other South were stuck in traffic and the drivers stopped to chat, their mirrors were tangled, they were too close too each other, it was a comedy of errors, and poor traffic direction from the contractor. Chicago Police, nowhere despite being just blocks from the 14th District...they sure could have used better traffic control.

So now the road is ground up and there is no work being done, couldn't this have waited till Monday and then do whatever needs to be done?

  • David Altenburg

That said, I sure wish drivers in our neighborhood were as cautious around pedestrians trying to cross the street as the are around minor grooves in pavement.

  • This isn't about nice new pavement anyone would love. There were no problems in the patches that have been torn up. Until someone reveals the great wisdom behind these "repairs" it just looks like bs work. Dig a hole then fill it back up union city employee nonsense. Seriously, I'd love for anyone to enlighten me.

Crawfish tails

Found at Unity Park. No collar. Seems to be ill and missing some teeth. Sorta slimy and wet. Will take to treehouse unless you can identify it.

From the GGNA neighborhood group: Hello Neighbors, Alderman Moreno's office has confirmed that the community meeting for the old Max Gerber site will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th at the Candela Restaurant at 2451 N. Milwaukee Avenue. This project team has requested a zoning change from C1-1 to RBPDw/B3.5 underlying/TOD for a fifteen and an eleven story connected towers with 253 rental units, 70 parking spaces and retail on the first floor at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

  • I suggest clarifying acronyms and initialisms (e.g., GGNA, TOD) on first reference.

From doing a Google search, it seems GGNA in this context stands for Greater Goethe Neighborhood Association; Goethe being a public grade school on Rockwell south of Fullerton.

From doing a Google search, it seems GGNA in this context stands for Greater Goethe Neighborhood Association; Goethe being a public grade school on Rockwell south of Fullerton.

If people are worried about escalating real estate prices, one way to keep prices from rising too high is by creating more housing supply. That's one reason I am in favor of higher-density housing near mass-transit sites, although I agree with Vince that the transit-oriented development (TOD) at Division and Ashland looks awful.

Most of the stretch of Milwaukee Avenue between Western and California is bleak. The design for the two towers I saw earlier this year looked much better than what's at Division and Ashland.

  • Sorry about that Keith...yes GGNA is the Greater Goeth Neighborhood Association. They are the body that the alderman turns to for community approval or rejection of projects. And TOD is a term they're throwing around a lot lately for transit-oriented development. Or larger scale near transit hubs.

Forming a ceramics/pottery co-op!

Hello, we are in the process of forming co-op for ceramicists that need a space to throw and fire their work. The goal is to pool our resources together so that we can get a space where we can work. We can also use this space to have monthly gallery openings so that we can show our work to the neighborhood. We have three people interested so far, anyone on here interested?

Also, does anyone know of potential places where we could set up a kiln? It would have to be a place that we could vent, like somewhere that used to be equipped for a kitchen.

Thanks neighbors!

  • By all means please do, thnxs for the invite!:O) Please let me know around what time everyone was planning to attend, and if I can sneak away from work for a bit I will let you know. :O)

  • Awesome! I'll let you know by tonight or tomorrow morning. Either way - we plan to arrange a lunch to meet everyone - so we will definitely keep in touch.

HUMBOLDT PARK — The Puerto Rican Cultural Center bought a former sausage warehouse on Division Street as it works to build an arts center that will include a performing arts theater, studio and living quarters for artists and a piano lounge.

The Paseo Boricua Arts Center is to built on Humboldt Park's Paseo Boricua, the strip of Division Street between California and Western.

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center kicked off its 5-year strategic plan to preserve and support the Puerto Rican community in Humboldt Park with the purchase of the warehouse at 2713 W. Division St., the former home of the Ashland Sausage Company.

“The acquisition of those properties is a major step in trying to commercially and culturally anchor our community as it faces the onslaught of an ever encroaching gentrification process which seeks to erase our historical memory from the Greater Humboldt Park community,” read an announcement from Ald. Roberto Maldonado’s office.

The properties will be converted into the new center, which will include 14 live/work space for community artists, a 99-seat theater for performance arts and dramatic productions, a retail arts gallery and a “wines of Latin America/Spirits of the Caribbean Piano Lounge,” according to Maldonado’s office.

The 3,000 square foot building sits across from the Puerto Rican Cultural Center along Paseo Boricua.

“The project will definitely invigorate the financial development of the community, and will provide a place where artists can realize themselves both economically and creatively,” according to Maldonado’s office. “It will truly foment a sense of place for our cultural workers.”

Belmont Bank will provide financing for the project. The Division Street Business Development Association, and its executive director Eduardo Arocho, will manage the initiative.

Did you lose a young cat, black with white markings?

There is a little lost kitty in the courtyard of my building. A neighbor is attempting to get him/her inside for the night. Is anyone missing a young black cat with some white marks? • Welcome. My suggestion, ride the bus and the L, aka public transportation. Take Fullerton bus to California. Walk from there and take train to downtown. You will get a full dosage of the city. The Latinos are Puerto Ricans (myself), Mexicans, Guatemalans, Ecuadorians, El Salvadorians, Cubans, Colombians, sorry if I missed others. All have their own distinctive culture and food and luckily for you, you have restaurants to try them all. Good luck.

The Tile App (which we've discussed for lost pets) is shipping

On the recommendation of one of the eb folks, I ordered these tiles....the theory being they can be used to track pets (if enough people have the smartphone app) kind of doing what we do here when someone loses an animal. eager to try it out and see if it works. just got an email that my pre-ordered tag are preparing to ship. will let you know if it will (or could) work on animals...if not, i'll just use it for my keys, glasses, or ventra hanger tag that i constantly lose anyway.

The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

I explained a basis to oppose the zoning change that was noted in an article attached to this thread. Perhaps you mistake my point.

The article explains in part that courts rule negatively to perceived spot zoning changes:

    Why Do Courts React Negatively?

Courts rule against spot zoning, when they believe it exists, based on two ideas:

    • Fundamental fairness. Often the suspicion is that perhaps the person seeking the change is a friend of some decision-maker or is owed a political favor. Or perhaps just is an influential person around town.

    • The strong legal nexus (connection) between land use planning and zoning. The ordinance is legally defensible to the extent it is based on good analysis and study of desirable future land use. When something looks so fishy that no reasonable planning commission would perceive it as a logical and desirable land use pattern, then the court may well say that's spot zoning.

I do agree with your comment Bonita concerning economic development. Also thanks for the delayed welcome been here since 01. Much obliged.

Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

  • i did give my neighbor a flyer for a free treehouse fix and talk to her about getting her cat fixed. i didn't tell her that said cat was driving my cats crazy by coming in my yard...her kids had told me it was their cat and that she had just had kittens(!) but for whatever reason, cat has not been around.

  • @loganparkcat oooooh no, your neighbor's cat isn't spayed? poop. Where are you located? PM me.

Turkey V

Has anyone seen what appears to be a turkey vulture circling around California and Augusta?
I noticed it appear after a kid fell off his bike and skinned his knee. Smelling blood, the turkey-v swooped down at the boy. Thankfully the boy's brother was there with a baseball bat and took a few whacks at his beak.
I'm worried about one of the neighborhood kids being carried away and snacked upon. Please be alert guys.

  • I used to live by an enormous group of turkey vultures. It freaked me out how they would fly in circles, like in the cartoons. Then I learned that is just their social flight. They aren't so much looking for something to die as they are leaving their nest and landing again, in a certain order, to establish their order and dominance.

Are there really turkey vultures living in the city? The ones I've seen come in 6-foot wing spans!!!

  • Speaking of turkeys... The Smoke Daddy is smoking a whole bunch of them for Thanksgiving! Order yours today...and maybe you should also order one for the vultures as a peace offering. #buyaturkeysavealife

Recent renovations to the California blue line stop have made it painfully clear that the CTA never intended to improve the actual functionality of the station. While thinking about the potential hazard of having only one conduit from the ground to each platform (a possible choke point, and the danger of having to cross California with no crosswalk), I got to thinking: how many El stops are there out there that have only one entrance / exit to each platform?...

While thinking about the potential hazard of having only one conduit from the ground to each platform (a possible choke point, and the danger of having to cross California with no crosswalk), I got to thinking: how many El stops are there out there that have only one entrance / exit to each platform? I cannot think of another north side blue line stop that does, but maybe my memory isn't so good. Are there red line stops with only one entrance / exit?

If any of us want to petition the CTA about this at some point in future, it'd be useful to recognize how rare this phenomena is.

The station at Roosevelt also connects three lines, which only happens one other place outside the loop that I can think of.

As was said above, short of demolishing buildings/spending millions of capital the CTA does not have, unfortunately making each station accessible is just not in the cards right now.

Seriously though, I have been acquainted with the Roosevelt stop since 1985. They build a nice tunnel to connect the subway and the elevated lines, but the main entrance is a disaster, and the actual subway platform is pretty much unchanged (I guess the train tracker info is nice, but that is pretty standard at the big stops).

Belmont connects three lines as well, and I'd argue the entrance is *far* more welcoming and open/easy to navigate during to rush hour than it was before. The platform seems indistinguishable from the Roosevelt elevated platform.

Just moved to Humboldt Park(by Kedzie and Thomas)

Can anybody recommend some of their favorite vendors? Primarily looking for dry cleaners, banks, grocery, restaurants, etc. Also interested to know the skinny on the park (pool, other activities for kids). Thanks in advance for your input.

Evan, I should add, make sure you drop a few quarters into the chicken machine next time you and yours go to Feed. If you get the golden egg you get $6 off your next meal and your picture added to the Golden Egg Wall of Fame!!!

  • I work for Association House on Kedzie and Thomas - welcome to the neighborhood, neighbor!! I recommend the Flying Saucer for breakfast/lunch- great food.

Mozzarella sticks??

been dying for some crispy, gooey mozzarella sticks in Logan square. Any suggestions?? Those soggy balls at boiler room don't count, and I haven't seen them on any menus nearby- I gotta be missing something!

  • J*o*s*h Engineer on Wrightwood

Make this the 5th vote for Roots. Nothing else compares to their handmade mozzarella.

  • Hmmm....will have to try Dante's sticks!! Sad to say, but super fast and not half bad (IMHO) are White Castle on Addison. Small snack to grab and go. It's been years since I've been to Leona's but they use to have huge sticks! Fried cheese curds are Delish at Small Bar on Wellington (and Albany?)

LA Fitness

Anyone heard any update on the LA Fitness taking over the Olympic carpet building? Think it would be a great addition to the neighborhood.

  • Anybody hear anything about whether this branch will have a pool? They certainly have the space for it. Hey LA FITNESS if you're listening, build a pool!

  • I can't believe how slow the construction is at the site. The workers seem to work a few days then no movement for days/weeks. I wonder what is going with the site. Has anyone heard anything new?

Looking for foster home for kittens

I have 3 friendly kittens in my yard. Looking for someone to house them and socialize them while we look for a home for them. I'm full up on cats already or I would take them in. They appear to be about 3 months old. They are very playful and seem healthy.

  • Thanks, Kat. The mom's in PR's TNR crosshairs.

  • So great to see how quickly the kittens were spoken for! I didn't even have to go through my usual phases of denial and eventual regretful acceptance of the fact that I really couldn't take on a second cat.

1700 Block of Drake

My Husband, Daughter and I took a walk the other day and found a house we would like to purchase on the 1700 block of Drake, about 6 blocks form our current home on the North side of Armitage. Please let me know what your thoughts are in that particular block and the area in general. I have lived in Logan, Armitage/Kedzie area since 2000 but, before making a purchase, we would like to hear more about the general feeling of the area, especially now that we have a young child. Thanks in advance for anything that you might have to offer, I appreciate it!

    Gangbanger heaven

  • Janelle, have you looked at the area just north of Logan Blvd, nice residential streets, plenty of parking, close to Blue Line and expressway, many young families in my neighborhood, I am just north of Diversey & West of California. My nephew used to be a police officer in this district and told me this is the safest in the district. He is now a fireman. Many nearby parks, shopping, restaurants w/o the congestion. Best wishes to you and your family.
