I have some jeans that need to be taken in a bit. I tried the place on Armitage and Kedzie, but the stitches didn't hold up for long. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance! :)

Anyone see a car wreck on Belden last night?

This is a total shot in the dark, but I'm wondering if anyone who lives on the block of Belden between Kimball and Spaulding may have happened to witness a (probably) large car that was (maybe) reddish or burgundy in color smash into the front side of my parked car?

This piece of human garbage did not leave a note, but did leave an enormous dent in my car.

  • I didn't see that, but around midnight I saw cops driving around with the spot light on just south of there. People seemed to be up to no good last night. Sorry for your car.

Two Towers/Max Gerber Development 2nd Community Meeting

The 2nd Community Meeting for the old Max Gerber Project (The Two Towers), at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave, will be Monday, March 30th, at the Haas Park Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m .

The last meeting was packed and was originally proposed to add 253 rental units in the area near the California L station - that's on top of 52 now permitted at 2340 N. California and 120 planned to open in Spring 2016 at 2211 N. Milwaukee.

If people from both sides can present their views in a non-snarky way, maybe we'll get somewhere in terms of having a real discussion and arriving at a reasonable consensus. Fioretti backs Rahm?

What does this mean for the beloved Progressive Caucus? Was Bob for sale? What do the people who backed Bob for round one say about this? Somebody talk me down.

  • Douglas Raul Williams Family history in Logan Square since 1970

Clearly a deal was struck since Fioretti is not running for his old aldermanic seat and his law firm will need business form the city. It is really disappointing and leaves a bad legacy for Fioretti since he was such a Rahm basher all his career.

#73 bus schedule

Does anyone know the best way to advocate for an extension of the #73 Armitage bus schedule? Right now it stops before 7:30 on weekends, which no longer matches community need, especially once the trail opens. I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

  • Douglas Raul Williams Family history in Logan Square since 1970

I agree. This route is covered by Alderman Moreno, Waukespack and Maldonado and they would be where to start. It is clearly antiquated since there are much more residents who are commuters and use the line seven days a week.

  • Carter O'Brien a Chi-town original

The problem with public transit cuts is they are a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who can't rely on the CTA for all of their needs often just get cars, and then the CTA gets little or no business from them.

Favorite tortilla chips?

This may sound weird, but having just moved here I need to know what are the dankest tortilla chips to be had here in Chicago. Coming from out west, the best we have are called Juanita's, made in Hood River, Oregon. Tell me the best brands.

  • E_S

I agree with previous posters about El Milagro and El Ranchero. Available pretty much everywhere. It should be noted that they are different chips though. If you like a thinner chip, Milagro. If you like a thicker, mega-crunchy chip, Ranchero.

Logan Square Dog Park

Anyone have any updates on the Logan Square Dog Park? After it was approved last year the blueprint was on the Park District website with construction to begin Fall 2014. Obviously that hasn't happened. Any info would be appreciated.

The bids just need to come in at the budget, and we'll know soon if that is going to happen.

Hi dog lovers. I have an update on the future of the Logan Square Dog Park. We just heard back from the Chicago Park District and they have plans to begin construction on the new park in May! Entitlement spending is breaking the state's finances and Rauner is fixing this problem. We just can't afford all the handouts any longer as much as I wish this was not true.

I don't think anyone can dispute the state is broke. That is factual anyone paying attention. Keeping the current spending programs and expecting things to get better is insanity. People who are exposed to tax hikes, property hikes, fee hikes and other items are not able to continually pay. We are broke too. It comes down to this: if you want more than what you have in life then get a better job, work harder and get promoted but to think tax payers just have to keep paying is not going to pass any longer.

  • Allen Montgomery The real humboldt park

Rauner won because Quinn was a poor candidate. I was so unhappy that Hardiman didn't win in the primary. I knew someone like Quinn couldn't win. If it wasn't for the Madigan Mafia, we'd still have Blagojevich, who was a far better governor. But Rauner won't get a second term. That conservative style of governing doesn't work in Illinois. But this is a good lesson for voters, next time they'll know better.

Where to sell used mattresses?

My middle-aged mother is moving to a smaller apartment this weekend and no longer wants, needs, or has space for her queen sized mattress and bed frame. I don't really want to go the craigslist route because waiting for a legit buyer (as opposed to a cashiers check scammer) and then trying to coordinate pick up is more of a hassle than I'm willing to deal with this weekend. I know there are used mattress stores but…? can't seem to find much info on getting rid of them, only buying them. It's a decent quality mattress, about 14 years old, cats and dogs in home. Suggestions?

  • Bger East Village neighbor

Most places do not accept used mattresses because of the possibility of bedbugs. I'm sure your mother's mattress is fine but stores don't want to take the time to inspect them. I would never buy a used matress just for that reason.

  • Craigslist is probably you're best bet

Hipolito Roldan is the President of the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation. He built the Plaza Taino elderly housing project which now need major structural repair. The entire first floor is dug up and unusable. The repair work started for about a year ago but came to a halt as Hispanic Housing Development Corporation run out of money. The open floor causes problems for the elderly and disabled residents as necessary services cannot be provided.

The finances for the 65th Infantry Boringueneers veterans housing project will be a welcome source for the Hispanic housing Development Corporation and for all its residents.

  • Smith Parker, I can vouch for the fact that the Plaza Taino has had the bottom floors boarded up since at least last summer. And there are still people living there. I would say there is a good chance it is true. The part about the structural integrity of the Plaza Taino being bad is definitely true.,

There's a building on Leavitt and North (not for the elderly) that was built somewhere between 2000 and 2005, that has no basement, and the foundation was messed up somehow...anyway the whole structure is off angle and all the condo owners who bought originally had to settle (none got reimbursed totally) for whatever they could get on their investments and move out. Makes me think, I'll take the 100+ year old buildings every time, at least the planning was for long term occupancy...this bldg. on North and Leavitt is still standing and housed Congressman Gutierrez for a long time till he moved out west...as far as I know this was not a HHDC project.

18X22 ROOM FOR RENT
May 1st

I am looking for a non-smoking, peace loving, cat friendly neat individual to rent a beautiful room in an amazing Arts & Crafts building in the Fullerton and Western area; tree lined street, easy parking, tons of public trans, very safe neighborhood.

The 18X22 room is in the front of the apartment. It is very private, almost like having your own studio apartment. There is a faux fireplace, stained glass windows, ceiling fan, and the front of room is all windows, so lots of light. The apartment is on the second floor so it feels like you are in the trees. The room is large enough for sitting area, office, and bedroom area. Built-in book shelves. Beautiful!

The kitchen is huge and modernized, dish washer, walk in pantry, kitchen is furnished. The bathroom is also huge and very nice, clean, subway tiles, ceiling fan. The coin laundry is in basement. There is some storage available. OK for bike in basement, real safe. 3 units in the building, so the building is quiet. I have 2 cats. No more pets are allowed.

$650.00 per month everything included (rent, utilities, cleaning supplies etc. and housekeeping.) Phone & internet not included. $650.00 security deposit and references required. Apartment available May 1st (preferred) but could be as early as April 15th or as late as June 1st as well.

So this won't be have 'SRO' /single room occupancy zoning. And to me the units are not very MICRO...or cheep. (I think the article might be mixing up the 1000sqft 2 bedroom with the 1500sqft 1 bedroom).

To me this seems like a good fit for a busy corner right by the El. This should help spread the revitalization of Milwaukee Ave further northwest.

Personally, I would NEVER pay anything close to that. I mean, my condo is half that and 1.5x the size (lol it's small) of that. But hey, it's not for everyone. Would you rather have this person rent one of these new ones and spend there cash here or take up some of the rental stock that's already dwindling as that's their only option in the area and force someone out of a cheaper apt?

  • Jerry Cargill Photographer, Teacher, Live on Milwaukee Ave.

I would say that it's better to get together with 2-3 friends and rent a floor of a two flat. Economically, that is the best way to go, and how most savvy young people have been doing it here as long as I can remember. Since wages have basically remained flat since 1980, any independent (ie:not reliant on Ps) young person has limited options as they whittle away at their college debt.

If you don't pick up that poop you might get flagged!

This topic has been addressed here ad nauseam, I don't think the offenders are reading Every Block- you know, pick up your dog poop! This afternoon, someone actually flagged a dog poop. I am not sure what to make of it- If you want to see this- take a look, I took a picture. (for some unknown reason, Everyblock pics are not going through)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bartshore/16915159066/

  • Love the flags! You'd think the offender would be embarASSed!! In my neighborhood, some people pick up the poop in the plastic bags, THEN leave the bags behind. I don't like carrying my dogs poop around either~ I was picking up trash at the park, then stepped in dog poop~ I swear! A good deed never goes unpunished

  • CV in Logan Square Born and bred Sside, NWside transplant and love it

Want to stop people from leaving dog poop behind? Take a photo of the offender, put it on fliers and post them all over the neighborhood. While it is an action, a flag doesn't connect the offender to the offending act. I love my neighborhood but I am sick and tired of having to tightrope down the sidewalk (and now, the curb!) to avoid dog feces. It was a nicer place to live before Logan Square got hot and started attracting lazy and inconsiderate dog owners.

Water Bill

I know this has been a recent topic, but my (metered) water bill arrived today. Last March, my water bill was $83.40. This March, the bill is $177.49! I sure hope my tenants understand when they get a big increase in rent this year. And no, I don't have any leaks.

  • You might want to install water saving shower heads (if you haven't done so already).

  • Our (single family) bill went up a lot last time because we used a lot more water with our whole house humidifier. Almost double the amount with the cold temps. Maybe that's just us, but we used a lot more volume this winter.

Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

Plaza Taino has what is called "Sick building syndrome" which means that the elderly residents get health problems from living in the building. The health problems are caused by bad indoor air quality. In the case of Plaza Taino the unhealthy air quality is the result of bad building materials and the absence of a ventilation system that brings fresh air into the building while removing bad air. The elderly residents spend time in their apartments breathing unhealthy air without any exchange of air. To rectify this problem, Hispanic Housing Development Corporation will install a modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system throughout the entire building.

Hipolito Roldan, President of the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation has expressed that there is now plenty of money to go around as the 65th Infantry Boringueneers housing project's finances been approved. There will be possible to free some finances to install the needed ventilation system. It was the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation that built the building and it was Hipolito Roldan who made the decision not to install a HVAC system when constructing the elderly low income building project.

Sick, elderly residents look forward to some fresh air.

CAPS- There is an in-place, staffed , and institutionally connected structure, very local to you, that has a regular meeting time & place. It tends to be safe & neutral across race, culture, and economics. The Community Policing program. This is a VERY good place to start. Meet some neighbors that are not in your circle of acquaintances, and may be very different from you. Get a sense of who is involved in your immediate community. Hear some of the concerns prevalent around you. A good place to ask for help and about resources. I have found this an excellent place to organize clean-ups and block clubs out of.

CLEAN UPS- This has been the number one way of starting to get neighbors together, in my experience. Sponsored cleanups (like the April 18th park cleanup), are an excellent way to begin. Then, when you have a group (it does not need to be large, 3-4 can do it), You can focus on a specific location (block, corner, vacant lot, etc);

Here is what we used to do:
We would identify a block to work on and with.
We would find one or two folks on that block who were interested in working with us.
A date would be agreed on for the cleanup (usually starting mid-to-late morning on a Saturday)
Flyers would be made up and distributed door-to-door on the block.
Streets and Sans would be contacted to provide brooms, rakes, shovels, garbage bags etc.
The beat sergeant, CAPS, etc were made aware.
Hotdogs, fixings, chips, and pop were purchased.

On the day of the clean-up, we would bring the cleaning supplies (and food for later); and start from one end of the block cleaning curbs, gutters, parkways, fence lines (under front yard fences) , and vacant lots (sometimes only superficially), and slowly work our way down the block.

More people would be out front and we would exchange greeting and light conversation. Kids would come out and start asking about food (lunch had been mentioned on the flyers).
One/some of us would start setting up a table for the lunch stuff near the other end of the block. We usually set up a grill to heat the hotdogs. The kids would be much more visible. We would make it clear that there would be food for all, as soon as we were done cleaning. By this time, more folks would be cleaning their own parkway & front yards, and some where bring out garbage cans and getting more involved with the general cleanup and with us.

We finish up the cleaning, and everyone eats together, standing around the food & grill, talking.
Often block or neighborhood issues would come up.
We would see if there was interest in having a block meeting.
If so, we would identify a good place to hold it- usually not someone's home. Someplace more neutral/public than that, and folks really were not comfortable letting neighbors they did not know well into their home. Folks were also not usually comfortable broadly sharing their phone numbers.
Usually we would be able to identify one or two people willing to be block captains.
The next event to be planned might be a meeting, but it might be another clean-up. Perhaps focusing on a vacant lot.

I learned this in beat 1423, from & with some very capable organizers. We eventually used this to create many block clubs, re-vitalize the United Neighbors of East Humboldt Park community group; and went on to get funding, staff, and volunteers to run an after school program at Von Humboldt school with GED, ESL, computers, and a steel drum band. I made a lot of good friends, with a variety of backgrounds.

In earlier EB threads, there seemed to be an interest on the part of some to learn more about how to get neighbors together, develop block clubs, etc. I wrote then that I would try to share on this topic as spring became more of an actual possibility, rather than a vague hope for the distant future :) . While there is snow on my deck outside my bedroom sliders as I write this, spring does finally seem close at hand- so here goes with some of the things that I have found effective [in the far distant past :) ]

Mulch by the truck load

Are there any places nearby that sell mulch by the truck load? Or is there a way to rent a truck (Home Depot) and go get a truckload of mulch? Our building has a mulch bed that runs the entire parkway of a half block. We've had the outfit that mows our tiny yards install and refill it in the past, but wouldn't mind doing it myself if the economics are right. And I've looked into going to Home Depot, or something similar, and buying by the bag and that did not seem like a reasonable option.

Scoby inquiry

I've recently attended a kombucha brewing class, and I'm interested in starting home brewing. However, I'm in need of the scoby. Dill is currently not selling them and had no suggestions as to where I could find one. Any ideas? Or does anyone have a baby they would share with me? Thank you!

  • I've got some! Happy to share. Email me, elsbeth cool at gmail dot com.

  • If you still need one, I can split mine too. The first time I started brewing I used one of the kits from Dill Pickle with very poor results. It's much better to start with a gifted SCOBY from an established brew. Let me know if you're interested.

The moment every parent in Humboldt Park parent dreads - The Chicago Public Schools letter

Please read my article from my blog on our reaction to the letter we received yesterday concerning our "acceptance" into the Chicago Public School for 2015-2016.

https://charliebillups.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/chicago-public-schools-night-of-dread-school-lottery-letter/

  • We went through this last year. Got into 1 school, on the wait list for about 30 others (SEL, lottery, private). By the time it was all said and done we got into 1 private, 2 charter and 3 (I think) CPS. We ended up going with Rowe Elementary in Noble Square and could not be happier. They are still accepting applications for next year through mid-April, so I'm happy to share more info if anyone is interested. Good luck to all of you. I remember how stressful this was!

My hubby and I were married at Promontory Point, which is a Chicago Park District building right along Lake Michigan. Cheap rental, and we brought in our own booze and catering and music. Beautiful place. Indoor seating with huge wall of glass doors that open facing the Lake and a nice stone patio outdoors. One thing though: Because it's a park building, random people can come through to use the bathrooms, so you need to keep that in mind :) It's been awhile, so just check out current rules/regs on the Chicago Park District Website. http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks/Burnham-Park/

Letizia's New Space and a Fundraiser for Logan Square Schools

Check out Letizia's new wine shop and, for the next 3 weeks, 10% of retail sales will go to support Friends of Brentano and Friends of Goethe.

This Thursday the 26th is the Grand opening party starting at 6:30 pm including food, wine tasting and a gnocchi making demonstration by Letizia herself! A great way to stock up the wine cellar!

Also, if you have a wine cellar, we should be friends.

Package Delivery Question/Offer

Hey everyone,

I have seen several comments lately about packages delivered by FedEx or UPS being stolen. I figured I would throw this out in case anyone is interested.

Long story short, I'm disabled and home most of the time. If anyone ever has an important or valuable package they need delivered, I would be happy to have you deliver it to my home and I could make sure it's taken care of until you can come by and get...

Hey everyone,

I have seen several comments lately about packages delivered by FedEx or UPS being stolen. I figured I would throw this out in case anyone is interested.

Long story short, I'm disabled and home most of the time. If anyone ever has an important or valuable package they need delivered, I would be happy to have you deliver it to my home and I could make sure it's taken care of until you can come by and get it.

Don't know if this is a crazy idea, but for what it's worth I thought I would offer. Of course, I wouldn't ask for anything in return. Just wanna be a good neighbor. However, I have never been known to turn down pie. So if a slice of something showed up, I wouldn't say no, but it's not required!

If I could be of help with this, please feel free to reach out to me via this post or at my cell (312.four nine three.1333). I live on the 1700 block of N. Kimball Ave, just off the corner of North and Kimball.

Oh, I'm also a photographer, so if you ever need that service, let me know!

Please forgive me if anything I have posted here violates any rules of EveryBlock.

Thanks!

Matthew

Found cat - Milwaukee & Sawyer

Found a young male grey tabby on our porch this morning. Collar but no tags. Very friendly, but seemed scared to be outside. We are keeping him safe inside.

  • Just this morning, I brought a friendly stray, which had been beat to a bloody pulp, possibly by a dog or another cat, into the Tree House clinic. They're transferring him to an ER. Make no mistake, any outdoor cat, feral or someone's pet, can suffer an excruciating plight.

  • time and again, it's posters that work...put on the corner lamp posts and in neighbors' doors. the owner -- or someone who recognizes the cat and knows who it belongs to -- may contact you. a lot of older pet owners are not looking online...
