Red light camera, diversy and California

Has anyone gotten a 100$ ticket here before? Turning left in the morning onto California is hard because it backs way up waiting to get on 94.

The pictures make it look like I was stopped at the line and the. Blew the red light, but it was yellow when I was in the turn lane changed to red as I was crossing the line

I want to contest not sure if I have any chance

The way I read it was that there is a certain zone right after the solid white line. If you are outside that zone when it turns red (not amber), then it doesn't tag you. This usually means that two cars can get through most lefts, excepting when one is behind those all too common land barge pilots who wait until everyone oncoming has stopped and dropped anchor, then lean into the turn like they're at Indy and you just have to pray you've crossed the danger zone in time.

As to your case then, I think that Robin's argument is the only one you can make. It is a bad left turn, more so in the afternoon with the sun blasting into all west-bound.

By the by, this also means that it's stupid and anti-social to slam on the brakes as soon as you see an amber.

Humboldt Park: 3300 Block of Beach

I will be moving soon and am looking over in this area? Is it safe for a SWF with no car? Thanks.

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

Kat W, Wide Birth means, keeping a safe distance, I have seen gang bangers all over one block a few years ago, heard whistles and other weird calls, then all the bangers faded into the cracks and out of sight. Soon a SWF jogged by and when she turned a corner, the all clear was sounded and the bangers crawled back out from their hiding holes.

  • KJ

I can vouch personally that when a single white female jogs around the park, they do not stop with the comments. I will not run around Humboldt the park proper after dark by myself because you get an insane amount of inappropriate comments. Nothing ever happened to me physically but the comments were extreme, made by stupid kids.

After reading the population stats offered by the "Portal", I decided to actually look up the stats from the census.
The US Census reports either as a county or a census tract, so I looked at the approx. 20 tracts which covers the area bounded by Western Ave., Chicago Ave., Central Park, and Bloomingdale.
There is a total population of 38,522. Of that the largest segment is caucasion at 18,729 (or 49%) The second largest segment is Black, at 6,574 (or 17%). This leaves 34% for "other" which is made up of Asian, Latino, and people that identify as 2 or more races.
After hearing for years that Humboldt Park was a "Puerto Rican " neighborhood, I was surprised to see the actual facts. And while some city maps define Humboldt Park as going all the way to Cicero Avenue and Kinzie Street, going farther West and South on the census map only gives a larger number of Blacks in the population stats.
Here is the link

Jason W: Enjoy the silence. Zero accountability. PRCC and the Portal is not a neighborhood-friendly organization if you define the 'hood as including the other 78% of us who live here and do not share the Culture PRCC promotes. They represent the radical 10% of a declining minority population and create and promote things like the "No se Vende!" campaign when there are hundreds of houses in the area that are for sale. Asking one question of them is being racist in their opinion, even if you are Hispanic/Latino. They get thousands of dollars of our tax dollars to run the center, the newspaper, in addition to having taken over the beautiful and historic horse stables inside Humboldt Park without an ounce of authentic community input. One thing remains the same about that place. They are still shoveling stuff out of that building long after the horses are gone!

I remember them organizing when the lady from Tipsy Cake (a local bakery that closed their retail space here near the Paseo Boriqua - Division St. between Western and California - but keeps her bakery here and employs several residents) joked with someone interviewing her and she called her confections "crack cake" and playfully referred to one that had too many bullet holes in it.

Just yesterday, NPR ran a piece where a researcher broadly studied online reviews of food, and found that the majority of reviews compared sweets and desserts to drug addiction.

Humboldt Park: Is Area of Central Park and North Ave Safe?

I lived north of the park as did and have some friends for a long time with no complaints. My in-laws are considering a move a few blocks west of the park, between North and Division. I have heard in the past that HP west of Kedzie is 'dicey.'

I would love someone to tell me that I have been misinformed. It is particularly important because the in-laws care for our toddler who loves to be outside. All of that activity takes place during the day time.

They currently rent in the 2400 block of north Lowell. I am wondering how the neighborhoods compare.

Thanks for any feedback.

How many years ago did you live here, Clove? That is a pretty important detail if you think your opinion deserves equal consideration to those who actually live here. I have lived west of Kedzie for 5 years next month. Every year is better than the previous year. I have great neighbors and walk my dogs daily. When I lived at Division and Wood, I had two bicycles stolen, three car break-ins, and some musical gear stolen. After we moved out, our apartment was broken into three times in a two month span. I have not been the victim of a single crime since moving here five years ago. (Knock on wood.)

I walk the blocks around the park every day and have no problems with my family doing so either. Yes, there are still animals running on the streets every so often but today that is the exception to the rule of a few years ago. I have noticed that the neighborhood has made great progress moving forward after you moved away Clove.

Our gentle greyhound has a puncture wound, or little mutt was lucky. These dogs were very aggressive, and one got loose twice, and the owners did not seem very concerned about it. Nick had to fight them off alone while the owners watched.

After the initial attack, one of the dogs managed to get loose a second time.

One pit bull was white female, about 80 pounds, hanging teats, recently had a litter; the second, sex uncertain, white with brown and black spots on her back, with some kind of doggie backpack. Owners were two white males, heavyset, scruffy goatees, very short hair, balding, in late 20's to mid 30's.

We plan on attending next CAPS meeting about this, but wanted neighbors to be on the lookout.

So, when you are ready to start walking again, let me know. love to have a play date and help do some guard duty. no one will bother you with two, 130 pound dogs to back you up.

  • Tracey, do you walk along logan blvd? What time do you usually walk your dogs? I walk my border collie lab mix every day and have been walking on Logan blvd again since my dog was attacked almost 3 yrs ago. It would be great to have a walking companion. Let me know, thanks

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

Looking for an Optical store

Hello everybody,
I need feedbacks on a really good spot to get new eye glasses. Am looking for a place where they will actually take time to help you look for a pair that will look great and not any pair because they are nice. I went yesterday to a place and the only help I got was that they pointed out to me the frames for women and men. I feel awful now wasting my time and money. But at least I got a copy of my prescription.

  • While the frame selection is somewhat limited, the prices and the quality are unbeatable at Costco. I have never been so perfectly fitted for eye wear as at I have there. If you need an adjustment, it is never a problem. I can't recommend them enough!

Where's the retail in Logan Square?

So - Logan Square is hot and has been for quite some time now. Everyone can agree on that - but outside of coffee shops and restaurants, and bars - where is the retail? Wicker Park has a nice mix of both retail and food. With Wicker Park increasing in price and small boutiques being driven out for larger "chain" stores - why aren't new shops opening or at least relocating up to Logan Square? It seems retail from Western all the way up to the square is lacking in general. Food Food, Coffee, Bar, with the exception of a few. Is it the economy still? Just wondering your thoughts.

Internet Provider

Hey neighbors,

I was curious what your experience with internet service has been like in the Humboldt Park area. I currently have Comcast which has fine service but the price has gone up in recent months after the promotional price they gave me expired. I'm now paying around $75 vs. the $30 I used to pay. I've called Comcast and tried to find a solution but I was told that's the best they can do for me if I want internet only.

That price seems high but I'm not sure if there are any other companies who even service this area. Anyone have a similar experience or some advice?

Thanks!

Tim, we went through the same thing recently. When our introductory rate expired, we called Comcast to try to negotiate a new rate and the best they could do was to give us tv and internet for the same $75. Not happy with the option, we switched to AT&T, which has been fine, but we've found the internet to be a bit slower. After AT&T was connected, we called to cancel our account with Comcast and they were like, "if you choose to retain your service, we can offer you 1 year of high speed internet at $35 (or $39)". Bastards. This just happened two days ago, so maybe you can call customer service to cancel (even if you're bluffing) and get them to offer the same.

  • I have clear as well. Despite some service interruptions, I've been happy. My rate recently went up to. 54.99 though.

Problem with newspapers and ads on porch

Our building, a 6 flat at Campbell and Palmer, has a huge issue with unwanted circulars, newspapers, and ads being delivered to our porch daily. So… I got a call supposedly from Com-ed today trying to sell me on a fixed rate plan called "Spark Green Something Something" … the agent had an Indian accent and was a little bit difficult to understand. He told me they could offer me a fixed rate in the alternative of a fluctuating rate. He said something about a verification code they could give me and that it was "free to cancel" at anytime. It sounded like if I gave verbal assent over the phone they'd switch it over right away. I didn't know anything about it, so I said they could mail something to the house about it, but he wasn't saying Spark was a separate company… but that it was a Com-ed plan.

I prepare myself the onslaught of fireworks in summer leading up to and around the holidays, but pretty much all summer. It's at the level where I really don't want to leave my house on July 4th for fear of it burning down.
To be honest, I don't really mind too much if it's just loud noise here and there and I like that people can have fun, and we can be a little less uptight and vanilla about our festivities.
Obviously call the cops if there's a real danger or 911 for fire. But I will say that the biggest 4th fireworks display actually takes place at the home of my neighbor who is a Chicago police officer. I don't think there is much anyone is going to do about it. One year a firework must have gone off in our backyard because it chipped the siding on our garage. I've also heard a firework so big, maybe a 1/4 stick, that it woke me from a dead sleep at 4am and knocked pictures off our wall. And last year someone blew up a trash can on our alley. It can get a little out of hand at times. All in good fun.

  • I don't agree that blowing up 1/4 sticks, salutes or similar is good fun for anyone except maybe the person doing it.

Wondering if anyone made a recording of the Met Opera's Tosca that was on WTTW (Channel 11) Sunday, April 6, 2014; and if you did if you'd be willing to share it for viewing.

Thanks

  • Try PBS.com. Also, if you have netflix, PBS programming is free (says the guy with no TV or rabbit ears).

  • Meredith W. Chicagoan since 2002; LoganSq home & busin. owner

I was going to say what David did. Usually PBS' web site offers both the re-airing schedule (very rare it only plays a single time -- especially since, with digital antennae, there are four WTTW-channels in Chicago) and often offers re-broadcasts. That said, not always. But found this: http://video.pbs.org/video/2365194614/ Hope that helps.

Fioretti's speech

Encouraging words of support for the needs of citizens.

http://www.cityclub-chicago.org/videos/detail/902/hon-robert-fioretti

  • “…For example, Chicago has thousands of struggling individuals with mental illness, many are poor. They don’t have good health insurance. They rely on public clinics to survive. To close their mental health clinics where they see their psychologists and social workers. Where they monitor their medication was inexcusable. […] Again...

“…For example, Chicago has thousands of struggling individuals with mental illness, many are poor. They don’t have good health insurance. They rely on public clinics to survive. To close their mental health clinics where they see their psychologists and social workers. Where they monitor their medication was inexcusable. […] Again this was a choice.”

The thing I appreciate most about Fioretti’s speech is that he says public policy cannot be based only on claims of “savings.”

For example, the “savings of 2 million” for closing the mental health facilities is completely wiped out if only 29 mentally ill individuals - who otherwise could have been kept out of jail through preventative care - are incarcerated over the next year (based on $190 a day in costs (http://tinyurl.com/ptp6qb2)). Not to mention the costs of supporting the now unemployed clinic workers and the lost revenue their salaries meant to their communities.

Not only should we be morally outraged at this treatment of the most downtrodden in our society. We should be offended that “savings” (real or imagined) can be the justification. Even if the City does save 2 million dollars by closing half our mental health facilities. Should that be something we view as a success?

Obviously, public policy is a balancing act and cost must be a factor. But if we’re willing to throw the mentally ill out into the street to save a buck…what aren’t we willing to do?

So,,,,30 Shootings in Chicago since Friday night? Hmmmmmm.......

Weather getting warmer, innocent people in the crossfire, concealed carry laws,,,,Seems to me we should have beat cops on patrol...

  • warmer weather crime increases - we need police presence and graffiti reported and removed - each of us should be able to walk in our neighborhood feeling safe.

It's also a big help to keep the front and back of your place looking cared for. It seems small, but picking up trash and making it obvious that you regularly use and care for your outdoor space makes your presence felt to everyone in the neighborhood. It can actually reduce several types of crime.

  • There was a notice on my gate stating there was a rezoning meeting a few months back, I wonder if it was approved....

Mechanic References

Hey EveryBlock...I am looking for a place to take my car to so that I can get a little check up on it (ie fluids and tier fill up/rotation) near Logan Square.

Nothing big, it just got checked out a month ago, but we took it on a long road trip...I am not very car savvy so I just want someone to make sure its still in good driving shape...

Do you guys know any good Mechanic shops around town?

  • MECO Power, Inc. MECO Power, Inc.

We used to go to Omar from O&J Automotive as well. We're not up that way as often as we were in the early days. We do recommend him as well.

  • I, too, SWEAR BY Rick and the Logan Square Auto Repair crew. They are flexible, usually available same-day, spot-on with time and pricing estimates (every time!), remember me when I go back, honest, speedy, and know what they are doing. I have trust issues with mechanics and they have been my go-to since I moved to the neighborhood because they have never done me wrong!

A whole A-hole

I watched what looked like a very burly female get out of a small grey vehicle ILL Plate # R18-1123 about 5:30 pm Mon & toss an armful of garbage into the Chicago River behind the Diversey Bowl which has cameras but I`m not sure what it may have caught. It seems like a ritual for this individual, ie there is a serious pile going on at this spot. Please tell me some options to report this knucklehead There are several dumpsters nearby. Thanks

Feral Cat Colony Caregiver Substitute Needed for Wednesday 4/16 and Friday 4/18

Hi Folks. I manage several feral cat colonies in the area (all TNR'd), but will be out of town next week. My usual substitute for one colony is incapacitated. For only two days, I need someone to stop by Sawyer and George to simply fill food (I'll provide the food) and water bowls (you bring a jug full). It's quick and easy, but very meaningful. Please let me know if you can help. We can set up a time to meet over there to walk it through. Thanks!

  • Elise Doody-Jones Logan Square Resident

We used to have a "Cat Lady" on the block. Dozens of cats every where. Wish we knew about trap and release then. When she moved she took most of her cats with her. Our rat problem has exploded ever since. No amount of baiting cures the problem.
Bring back the "Cat Lady". Rather have stray cats than rats, so thank you for keeping a healthy catch and release program going.

I am a court reporter by trade, now, but I used to work for several veterinarians, including the Clyborn Vet Emergency, and I had my own pet sitting business for quite a few years. If anyone gets in a situation where they need a pet sitter, give me a call. I'm not asking for money, I just know what it's like to try to find quality pet care and I'd be happy to help with the cat colony as well. I helped maintain one in the past, so, contact me if any of you ever has a need.
