The feeling of paranoia fell upon Alderman Roberto Maldonado as left his office after dark.

As the Alderman walked passed the empty buildings and undeveloped lots he felt both lonely and scared. He knew that if he could just identify the person then he could eliminate this threat, but he could not see who it was.

This is how social media sites functions allowing people to follow politicians online and comment on their work without the politician being able to threaten or harass the person. The ability to stay anonymous and still share information is changing everything. Let's change the politics in Humboldt Park.

I saw that you, Alderman Roberto Maldonado, started a new account here on EveryBlock with the purpose of trying to undermine critical voices against you. The account is using the name "debloetz" . For example, you are trying to make people think that I work for a competing politician. I think it's scary that you waste time on such work instead of explaining why you work against the working class, unemployed and underemployed people in your ward.

See photo. See how scary 2734 West Division Street store front looks after dark. No wonder Division Street between Western and California does not attract any customers after dark.

Shame on you Alderman Roberto Maldonado for letting business after business fail right outside of your office.

On this forum, I read all sorts of stuff I don't agree with or think is droll, tactless, and even much worse. I have NEVER muted anyone regardless of their opinion, views, etc. That's humanity. That's honesty. If it causes you real hardship, I envy your cushy & otherwise carefree life if this is the worst thing you experience. If you feel victimized by Jose J's posts falling into your inbox, form a support group or find the delete or scroll down button.

You could also post something that represents your ideas, thoughts and observations.

Yeah, I admit Jose J's posts are getting a little stale, but like that squeaky belt when you start your car, you put up with it until you can get it fixed.

Jose J. is squeaking, so you think the solution is to mute him?

I say it is time to fix the problem, and that it is time for change in Humboldt Park.

We need better leadership in the 26th Ward, and I recommend that you read up on the candidates, engage in open discussion, and participate in one of the wonders of our society, and VOTE.

I agree with huboldtwriter. Also I can understand Jose J's strong feelings regarding Maldonado. Either mute him or ignore his posts.

  • By the way, the purported political relationship between Maldonado and Juanita is just an amusing fiction. If Maldonado wasn't committed to the displacement of his voters, the closing of their schools, indifferent to their foreclosures, and a consistent yes vote for Mayor Emanuel's misguided policies, then Juanita would not have gotten into the race.

The 26th ward deserves a change in direction, and Juanita represents a great direction for all residents.

Since Mal-do-nada got in office, he has watched the Zapata Homes built in his ward, another project on talman, the Hispanic Housing Sr home on North and Pulaski, and now has green lighted the subsidized housing on the grounds of Norwegian American Hospital. Not to mention the subsidized single family homes being built on the West side of the park. All together, that's about 400 subsidized units being dumped in the ward.

All of this after he promised NOT to build anymore subsidized housing in the 26th ward. WHy would he promise that? Because he knew that the 26th has more subsidized housing than any other ward in the city, and is saturated.

Also, he made sure that when the remap occurred, his 26th ward went west past Pulaski. So it looks like the only thing he cares about is making sure he keeps his voting base in his ward.

Btw, the new "affordable housing" on Norwegian land will be approx. $800 for a one bd, $1000 for a 2 bd, and $1,200 for a 3 bed. With not enough parking for one car for each unit. It's expensive, but at least its ugly!

So I don't think we need another alderperson committed to more public housing. We have enough. After the failed policies of Gutierez, Ocasio, and Mal-do-nada, it's time for a change. Corona is that change.

Question about front yard fences

My neighbor is putting up a fence to close off the courtyard of their building. Where he is putting the fence will completely block the side of my porch and if I need porch repairs or gutter repairs, the fence will make it hard to get to. The fence is on his property line but I want to know if it is legal for him to put a fence up literally 6 inches from my porch and blocking it off.

I did not buy a home by an el, or a bus or a train or even on a main traffic thoroughfare or intersection. After 16 years, I now live in a neighborhood with traffic congestion, overrun with outsiders, disturbing our peace and quiet and trashing our lawns. These kids don't live here. Why not move Chi-arts to their neighborhood? If it was closer to their home, their parents wouldn't have to drive to pick them up. At least, have some consideration and relocate it on a public transportation line! In the meantime, I am applying for a reduced assessment that will more accurately reflect the reduction in our quality of life. Oh.. I am also looking for a new Alderman...

  • Washtenaw1, time brings about change. Put up a fence to protect your lawn. It doesn't have to be 6 feet tall. If protecting your lawn and picking up some trash that the wind could have blown from miles away, are your most egregious experiences, you are lucky.

  • Really??? When I was younger that corner was overrun with gang members...I think this is a great improvement...Sheesh

Renters insurance recommendations?

Let me encourage you to get to sign up with someone today. You can always change companies or policies later.

There was a very minor fire in my building recently on the 12th floor. Most of us (and I'm on 11) didn't even know about it. The official fire log shows that it took the firemen less than 5 minutes to arrive and depart. But the water damage hit 30 units. That's because the way the fire department puts out fires is by soaking completely the entire area. And all that water has to go somewhere.

A lot of my neighbors are in shock that the building's own insurance doesn't cover them. It is possible they may try to pursue the guy who started the fire (by going to sleep with a lit cigarette) but I suspect his pockets are very, very thin.

  • I have mine through Allstate and have had excellent service and great rates. However, I would recommend first starting with the insurance company that provides your auto insurance (if you have auto insurance and they provide renters).

As pointed out earlier, you will be able to get reduced rates on both your auto and renters insurance through discounts for bundling as well as being able to work with the same agent for all of your insurance needs.

They're the best of friends so they must live together. They had no tags and no chips. If these are your dogs or if you know the owner, please contact me!!

  • Thank you!! You're awesome, Kaitlin!!! :-)

If they're seven and ten years old, both PAWS and Treehouse would be hesitant to spay/neuter them without getting bloodwork done first, and neither place will chip them without being fixed.

I second the suggestion with ANY lost animal to meet the owner at a vet office so they can have it chipped on site (though not all of them will be able to afford it plus the registration fees) a good alternative may be to offer to buy them an inexpensive nylon collar and write their phone number on it with a permanent pen.

Chicago Animal Care and Control will allow you to post flyers there for both lost and found animals, however you have to actually go down there to post them.

Please don't judge animal control - they probably accept far more animals than you think and also euthanize far, far fewer than you think.

Congress Theatre Open House - Jan. 24 1-4PM?

Is this happening? Cannot find anything referenced other than in this article. Anyone plan on stopping in tomorrow? Do we expect the renderings to be presented?

http://chicago.curbed.com/archives/2015/01/13/congress-theater-redevelopment-ready-to-move-forward.php

  • Joe Kopera Logan Square resident since 1961 (54 years in Jan)

Michael Moyer was looking a about a two year project and that everything in the building would open at the same time. I also heard that the lobby would be open most of the time and that to the right of the lobby would be a entrance to the Inn on the Milwaukee Ave side.

  • I do hope it's LIVE entertainment and not the stuff that brings too much noise and BASS. Did Mr Moyers discuss the sound issue? Since the Congress Theater was originally designed as a movie theater, it was never properly equipped for optimal acoustics inside and out. The interior is going to need sound proofing. I'm wondering how that will that affect the restoration process?

This off-leash problem is rampant and ridiculous and those who do it are ruining the park for the rest of us, a public park paid for by everyone.

I am calling 911 every single time I see off-leash dogs and the police are showing up. I hope the rest of us responsible folk will do the same. Spread the word.

I walked around the park at 3pm today and saw four people, all with dogs on leashes.

There is one area in the park, by the beach, which seems to be a spot for those with active dogs who run off leash daily to get their energy out. I actually have had no issue with this as I can easily avoid it with the park being so huge. Back when My dog was a little younger and a little less cranky, we would go there too, and it was absolutely wonderful for her to run. She would sleep all day after that. As she gets older, she has gotten less dog friendly, and I have had no issues avoiding that area at all, and still am able to giving my dog a 30 min leash walk through the upper 1/4 of the park.

I do go to the park every day, and I would actually say that most people I pass have a leash on. Also, I am actually against another dog park in HP, at least as most of them are defines. I wish we could have a real dog park in the city like 'Prairie Wolf' in Lake County. The dog beach at Foster is pretty good, but a good hike from HP. I would love if they could turn a section of HP into a dog park like that! Great for active dogs, not just the small city yelpers.

Carpet places

Hi, A tenant's apartment in Logan Square just sustained major water damage in her bedroom and now the carpet and padding must be replaced. Does anybody know (besides Empire and Luna) any place that will come to the apartment to give quotes? Thanks.

  • J. Theo Bucktown resident

    Check out http://mrcarpetshopathome.com
Right in Lakeview. Highest rating on Angie's List for years. I had some water damage and the owner came out and told me what to get and what I don't need to pay for. Very honest, straight shooters that stand by their products and their work.
I shopped around, and those big guys that advertise on tv tell you it's cheap, but don't show you the extra charges that end up costing more than a local small-business owner charges.

  • CPL949 HP Resident

Just to update you all (in case you were wondering): Decided to go with Home Depot. Had the same carpet two other places had with a much lower price.

Looking for wood shop space to rent..

Hi, three friends and I are looking for a wood shop space to rent in the Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square neighborhood. Ideally we'd hope to have the space to ourselves and pay monthly rent. If you know of anyone with a vacant garage/building that wouldn't mind the noise and sawdust please let me know! Note, we would be providing all our own tools so we're basically just needing an empty room with electricity.

Thanks!

We will work with you, if you would like to see them. One space was used as a wood shop, with plenty of light and as much storage as needed. Bryan 773-539-5858.

Kids stealing packages

Around 3:35 I saw a group of kids running north on the 2400 block of Spaulding Ave (about halfway between Fullerton and Altgeld). They ran up the stairs of a porch across the street from me, grabbed some packages that were on the stoop, and ran away down an alley. I couldn't tell if they had taken anything from more than one house.

I called 311, but was told I couldn't report it because I wasn't the victim. I'll let my neighbors know, but I just wanted to let people in the area know to be on the lookout and watch out for their packages. The kids were male and probably early to mid teens .

You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

The reason for me to start today is that I heard that NPR is having several programs this coming week specifically discussing what woman want from politicians in Chicago.

Humboldt Park politics has for years been steered by male agendas while woman's concerns has been silenced. One of my greatest concerns is the lack of emphasis for economical development in the 26th Ward. The lack of economical development affects woman at all levels.

My highest priority is job creation and business development in Humboldt Park. I am concerned about the lack of jobs for young people who graduate from school. Without an entry job and without any tutoring there is no future. Teenagers and youth loose their hope and turn to any possibility for making money which can be crimes and gang activity. Only a strong job creation program can solve this problem.

See blow for continuation of this message.

Tired of those junk newspapers, mailers, and coupons on your doorstep?

Yeah, me too. I am tired of picking up that junk on a daily basis; soggy junk mail in bags. Even more annoying that it eventually becomes litter and blows all around the street.

All of it. Make it stop!

Most of it comes from a partnership between the Tribune, and Valassis, a direct mail company. They are required to discontinue delivery immediately if the resident contacts them to complain.

spark energy update?

The other day, caught off guard, I allowed myself to switch to Spark Energy due to the persistence of two door to door salesmen. Looking at past threads on this topic, it seems lots of folks have had bad experiences, and some folks have seen reduced savings and feel it is a legit company with bad solicitation tactics.

Was I scammed? I feel like a goof for ignoring my gut. Thanks!

I have saved with first energy for electricity and direct energy on gas (except Dec, Peoples would have been cheaper) Peoples gas charge changes every month. Lots of threads on this.

  • Like kittyhop says, read the receipt they gave you - you have maybe a week from the signing date during which you can cancel. Not sure of the exact time limit; it IS short. But if you do some quick research you can decide whether Spark is worth it for a year.

Not cool, Moreno

Is it normal for campaign volunteers to canvass door-to-door at 8pm? We were putting our 6 month old to bed and got our buzzer rung...twice! My husband ran outside and gave them the what-for. The goons seemed less than contrite.

  • 1st Ward Alderman Proco Joe Moreno

    Hi Alya,
Sorry for the disturbance. It is common for campaign volunteers to canvass at times when it seems likely that residents will be home from work. I'll speak to our volunteers personally to address this specific complaint.
    Thank you for the feedback.

  • All our volunteers have been asked to not canvas past 7pm. I, too, am a mom and in general, feel residents are settled for the evening by that time. Have also reminded all volunteers that NO literature is to go into mail boxes. Have seen some literature (not ours) slid in the boxes. Working towards Feb 24 -- unless we have a run off, residents should not be bothered after that date! Don't forget -- 1st Ward Debate Jan 29, 7pm at Wells High School.

  • I, too had an incident about a week ago-I believe they were campaigning for Jan Schawosky. I probably spelled that incorrectly. Anyway, they laid on my buzzer like the building was on fire and woke me up. (I had the flu.) I just said "no thank you" and they went away. I should have gone downstairs and explained to them why this behavior was unacceptable. Can't believe they think this is ok.

Healthcare

Hi, I am a student journalist.

I'm writing a story on healthcare, specifically on how the Affordable Care Act has made the system more efficient or less efficient (for you). Obama has tried to streamline medical documents using technology, such as electronic health records.

So, I'm looking specifically for a patient who HAS had difficulty or has NOT had difficulty with needing medical documents transferred from one hospital (for many reasons) to another hospital.

It this applies to you, I'd love to speak with you and share your story.

If your interview is used, it would be published on a Chicago news website.

Please contact me for more information.

Thank you!

Integrys offering to remove a charge from ComEd bill

Did anyone else have an Integrys person come by this week offering to remove a charge from their ComEd bill? The guy who came to my house said they had charged customers for a monthly charge that they weren't supposed to have, and the man at my door could remove the charge if he could see my electric bill. I thought it was a scam (and had dinner on the stove), so I sent him away, figuring I could find something about this online. But I haven't been able to yet. Is this legit?

  • No problem becky! thanks for your comments.

If you want to send me a email with a picture of the pup that would help me keep an eye out for any lost ads. I had a stranger help me find my girl almost 20 miles away so I've been paying it forward ever since. My girl is now microchipped-didn't know about those till after she bolted when I slipped on ice. They found her with a different collar then the collar & leash she went missing with. Here's my email and thanks again for posting and keeping this pup safe: E.Sus@comcast.net

  • Agreed Lisa. I too enjoyed Letizia's for that. The article doesn't mention it (I don't think), but Letizia's started selling at the Logan Square Farmer's Market. Hopefully that might continue. Maybe? Anyway, I'm excited for the new concept too.

  • I'm glad to hear they're closing the bakery component. Their baked goods were bland and always left me feeling bloated. Dinners, on the other hand, always hit the spot.

Code 0964100G Violation

Just got a ticket in violation of code 0964100G STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC SIGNAL which, after further research, is for parking too close to a stop sign. Apparently the code states you have to be 30 FEET from a stop sign or traffic signal, however, I can't actually find the code. I plan on attempting to contest it. This just seems like some BS way of creating revenue, especially when there are no signs posted or markings on the curb...

This just seems like some BS way of creating revenue, especially when there are no signs posted or markings on the curb and there are and have been several cars parked just as close to the stop sign or in the same exact spot for years, and I've never seen a car ticketed ONCE. I'm mad. Anyone have any suggestions for anything I can do to be productive? Otherwise, I will just stew in my anger and out $60. This was at the stop sign at Spaulding and Schubert, near the blue line.

  • Piper - I've gotten a ticket in the exact spot you mention. I have seen other cars ticketed there since, but the enforcement is very irregular so you will see people parked there basically 24/7. I never intentionally park illegally but it's a very confusing area since the stop sign...

Piper - I've gotten a ticket in the exact spot you mention. I have seen other cars ticketed there since, but the enforcement is very irregular so you will see people parked there basically 24/7. I never intentionally park illegally but it's a very confusing area since the stop sign is not very near the corner or the crosswalk.

I've even asked a parking enforcement person who was writing tickets what areas are legal in that dead end and what are not. She told me that parallel to the curb was ok, except near the stop sign, corner, and fire hydrant. She also said that the "head in" spots were legal "about half-way" (?!?) across the dead end but this is apparently subjective because my husband just received a ticket when parked there. Grrrrr. Actually he received two within 24 hours -- we appealed both by mail & got the duplicate dismissed, at least.

Also, as a head's up, I've gotten a ticket parallel parked on the north side of that dead end for parking in the wrong direction when pointed toward Milwaukee. Apparently some others have too because now you will see cars parked in both directions on that side (nose to nose or tail to tail). I've been on this block for almost 8 years and never saw anyone parked pointed away from Milwaukee until this year. (For those not familiar, the dead end is all of 3 cars long & has no room to turn around.) I can't even see how cars get in there that way without some illegal driving moves. I just avoid that whole area as much as possible, but as you know parking is sometimes tough to find.

I'd gladly avoid parking illegally if I could only figure out what is legal. :( Who could I ask to get a definitive answer? I'd also be happy to pursue getting reasonable signage/paint if possible - I guess the alderman would be the starting point?

  • I know this is an old post, but I wanted to chime in that I contest every single ticket I or my husband get, most of which have been for this violation of parking too close to a stop sign. I would say they throw out 2 of 3. It is ALWAYS worth a shot, just don't forget to take and include photos in your contest!

Lost Lake coming to former Previous Administration Spot

Hi again, everyone. I read in Zagat's list of most anticipated spots of 2015 that our neighbor Paul McGee had joined forces with the Land & Sea Dept. folks - and that we're getting a tiki bar. Well, Lost Lake is opening up at Diversey & Kedzie, where Previous Administration was briefly. Should be opening sometime this month. With this, and Son of a Butcher opening at Diversey & Richmond soon, it's gonna be exciting up here!

I suspect this trend will slow down dramatically as the neighborhood inhabitants age and start to realize how many calories are in these drinks.

On the other hand, it's nice to have a close alternative to Hala Kahiki, although it takes years to develop that fine musty carpet aroma.

Rent vs. ownership

I think one of the key issues is that these small businesses rent rather than own. Ideally, if a small business can own the property, it can avoid increase in rents, etc. I know, a pipe dream for many but if you can own your building it would seem much easier to run your business.

Larry - It is true that companies that make it and stay in the same location for 25 years will probably have done better to buy than rent. But to generalize your experience is to allow survivor bias to creep in as you ignore the fact that very few businesses last 25 years and even fewer in the same location.

Most fledgling companies would never be approved for a property loan without a personal guarantee. And even if they could, it still might not make sense. You may want to move, expand, contract, etc. Renting, while more expensive, provides this flexibility which is EXTREMELY valuable.

I think these are all good points, and it's valuable to hear a wide range of opinions on the subject. One nuance I haven't heard discussed per se is just how much customization does your business require, in terms of infrastructure build out. The owner of a law office may not feel a need to purchase the property as moving is relatively painless. A dentist may see it differently due to equipment requirements, a yoga studio owner who breaks his/her back to put in really nice hardwood flooring, etc.

About the 65th Infantry Borinqueneers Building and the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation.

When my husband joined the army to fight for our freedom we hoped that our lives would turn around and that we would have the opportunity for a decent life and reasonable living conditions. It has now come to my attention that the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norwegian-American Hospital plan to build a large apartment complex specifically for Borinqueneers veterans in the Humboldt Park area.

If I understand correctly, the housing complex is to be built in an area that is zoned for 2 story homes and that the zoning for this specific lot was changed to accommodate for this new apartment complex.

When I look at Google map I can see that the lot would fit 14 buildings if built the same size as the rest of the neighborhood. In the USA, the average household has about 2.5 persons. If built as the rest of the neighborhood, the lot would house about 35 residents.

The proposed building has 50 apartments and are planned to house about hundred veterans. That means that Hispanic Housing Development Corporation is planning to squeeze us into a high density dwelling situation. Aren't they aware that high density population is the number one indicator of slum.

Looking at Google map and reading the blogs here on EveryBlock I can see that the Norwegian-American Hospital has plenty of open spaces around the hospital where REAL HOMES can be built for veterans. If you at Hispanic Housing Development Corporation really want to show us your appreciation for our services build us real homes and not overcrowded dwellings.

  • I think that people are objecting to the density of the project, and questioning whether the occupants will actually be vets and/or low income.

When Presidential Towers was first proposed, at least 20% of the units were to be reserved for low income residents. The building's owners fought to have that percentage lowered, and eventually, after government loans were paid off, eliminated the low income units entirely.

This being Chicago, people are naturally skeptical.

  • EastHumboldtNeighbor resident since 07

Objections include giving a no-bid multi-million dollar tax funded gift to a political donor. The addition of obtaining a zoning change of PD 599 without a commitment to add additional parking despite having less than 70 parking spaces (need 490) required in the original bequest is just the coup de grace. Besides transportation is a little bit important for the ambulances that come to and from the hospital.
