Looking for local shops that do vintage consignment/sale

Hello neighbors, can anyone recommend a local shop that may be interested in buying some 1960s memorabilia? Beatles and Monkees board games and teen fan magazines. I'd be happy to just get the stuff sold, but I'd take consignment as well. I've been trying to sell stuff on Craig's List and it's tough to find buyers. eBay is another option but it's again difficult to find local buyers and I'd rather not get into the complexities and time of shipping. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

  • There is a store called Forever young Dolls and Toys 7701W Belmont in Elmwood park 708 4527048 they have alot of vintage toys. Give them a call. Good luck!

  • The new store on North Ave., "Apartment 528" sells exactly what you have! Try them. They are on the north side of North, a couple of blocks west of Western.

found black and white cat

I found a black and white short haired cat in my courtyard near the Spaulding blue line entrance. I gave it some food and she was able to get close enough for me to pick her and bring her inside. any help finding the owner or a safe place for her to go would be much appreciated!

  • Jen60647 Kimball & Schubert

The cat has been around for weeks. My husband and I tried to get her earlier this week to take her in to a shelter. We thought she was a stray.

  • I'm so glad someone was able to get her inside! Was getting worried about her in this weather.

Guy who walks around talking to himself, and when he sees me he calls me "White Trash"

Anybody seen or had an encounter with this guy, around the 1700 block of Spaulding? I believe he is Hispanic and in his 20's, and when confronted he starts to talk a bunch of $&it, even though he walks by me and calls me white trash. Its happened twice, and the second time I just let it go. I'm not really sure whats going on, and just wondered if anyone knew. I figured he's got some mental issues or something.

  • Sounds like a guy who made some crazy comments to me on NorthAve and Spaulding this summer because I was driving a minivan. Don't think it's racial because I'm obviously Latina, just think he has psyche issues.

  • Are you "White Trash"? If not then focus on something pressing in your life. If you don't have anything pressing... Then find something. In other words life is too short to worry about the B S. Move on already.

  • Can you get your shorts in a wad that this Alderman keeps making comments about 'gentrification', while planning to make a killing on his properties selling them to a developer who will build fancy, expensive buildings for 'gentrifiers'?

  • He should be forced to sell them for $1.

Smart Traffic Lights & Stop Signs

How great would it be to have Smart Traffic light or stop sign to help with the congestion and travel times?! In the meantime can anyone really fault me for running a red light or for a rolling stop at a stop sign when there is CLEARLY no need for it.

I know the sticklers will say It's the law but come on.

Big transit oriented development planned near California Blue Line Stop

Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

Derisive comments about the neighbors who don't share your views isn't a generally accepted debate tactic.

I couldn't make the meeting due to family obligations, I guess that means I don't get to be a part of "Busterville," fortunately you do not appear to be a legitimate non-profit community organization that holds regular meetings.

  • Was it my "silly synopsis" you found derisive? I'm curious which comments you took offense to. I know the "silly synopsis" sounded a little jaded. But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to...

But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to prove he lived in the neighborhood because they didn't believe him (and because he was too new, his findings had no merit). And when he said his data was from the US census, a guy yelled out "Census! It makes no Sense-Us." He screamed that he didn't believe US Census data and that the guy hadn't knocked on his door to "census" him...so he didn't believe the data. You're a very clever man Carter...wise...and you're more than welcome in Busterville...whatever that is. I find your tone quite derisive. Not sure if thats what you intend.

The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

http://www.useful-community-development.org/re-zoning-opposition.html
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate law/zoning/proposed_rezoning_change.htm
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/zoning/object_neighbor_zoning.htm

Let's keep this discussion ongoing on this site until this is resolved. Please tell others.

The Hispanic Development Corporation does not have the knowhow to build large constructions and should therefore not be allowed to build any large residential buildings.

I went to the Hispanic Development Corporation's website to research why the company's buildings fall apart just some years after being built. I found a wealth of information. The Hispanic Development Corp Senior Management and Board of Directors all lack knowledge and backgrounds necessary to make decisions when it comes to large residential buildings. They actually lack complete higher degrees in architecture and structural technology for large residential buildings. They all come from financing, public policy, lobbying, social science. politics and similar.

The Tropic Construction Corporation is on the Hispanic Development Corporation's website described as the corporation's FOR-PROFIT construction company. That means that these two organizations has the same top decision makers.

The Tropic Construction Corporation is presently doing structural repair work on the PLAZA TAINO at 1111 N Francisco. The Tropic Construction Corporation built PLAZA TAINO for more than 60 residents some years ago but the interior of the building is collapsing. PLAZA TAINO can therefore be used as a good example of the two company's degree of architectural and structural knowledge. The PLAZA TAINO building was planned to last for 99 years and The Tropic Construction Company was paid for constructing a building that would last long.

To let the Hispanic Development Corporation and the Tropic Construction Corporation build a 60 feet high, 62 residents building will be a disaster for people in Humboldt Park, the veterans and all tax payers.

I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

Your post was addressed to "Bicyclists" and I am a bicyclist. While I was not the sole intended recipient of your message, it WAS directed towards me, whom as you point out, you have never met. This is both annoying and rude. I am not "taking it personally", I am pointing out that you are extrapolating the behavior of a single individual and applying it to a whole group, ie stereotyping.

I read your post, it was concise and clear. I don't need you to reiterate it or explain your motives.

Mr. Brettner points out that my "mommy" also told me to be careful. At that time she was my legal guardian and I was incapable of making reasonable decisions, so that WAS appropriate. Notice also that he then goes off about "Know-it-all bike Nazis" who want control his behavior. Understand that you have provided him a platform for his own stereotyping.

If the intended goal of your post really is increase safety on the public roadway, verses say, feel better after venting on the the internet by lecturing strangers about something bad that happened to you, then you should probably reconsider the effectiveness of your actions. I doubt any of these offenders are reading your posts and I expect they are unlikely to change their behavior if they are.

With such little likelihood of effecting change and evidence of annoying unrelated third parties and hosting bike-trolls, I would suggest you not post messages in this vein.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Honestly man, you definitely ARE taking this personally, which is downright silly. If you find it "annoying and rude" to utter a politely worded and non-demeaning "be careful" reminder to people choosing to engage in an activity almost anyone can choose to engage in at a moment's notice, then I'd invite you to consider that the problem is probably your sensitivity level.

Unless you've got something positive to add to the conversation moving forward, please QUIT TROLLING this post.

More Subsidized Housing in Humboldt

Many of you may have seen this already but I wanted to post it so that people can comment. Why would we put up a veterans home next to a hospital that isn't a veterans hospital?

Why would we name a building with a Puerto Rican name on the NORWEGIAN AMERICAN hospital property?

Why would we not HONOR the over 100 year legacy of Norwegian American hospital by naming it a Norwegian name, or just using Humboldt in the name?

Why would we put up housing on land that Norwegian American Hospital had earmarked for additional hospital facilities?

Oh yeah, so guys that don't even live here anymore (not the vets, the pols) can claim this area as "Puerto Rican" even though the 2000 and 2010 census shows that it is far less than 50% Puerto Rican.

If so:
Please message me! I'm looking for more classic styles - no sneakers or modern sandals. So this could be heels, pumps, oxfords, boots (depending on what kind), flats, etc. I only have a month before the installation, so I'll probably take anything!

I live in the area, and would be happy to meet in a neutral place or make a pick up!

Thanks!!!

I simply do not have foster homes or adoption floor spots for all these cats. I have a foster (but no adopters) for all the little kittens, but if anyone can help foster some of these young, healthy adults/older kittens until I can get them adopted or into other foster, please do let me know (I would have them vetted before they came into your house). They've got bad food and no shelter, and one seemed pretty underweight to me....they ate the food I brought like crazed zombies - they're obviously not being fed properly. HVAC Recomendations?

Elo Folks! Got a bit of a heating problem and it's now a bit beyond us. We've replaced the coupling, and the furnace stays on for...maybe five to ten minutes, then shuts down. Pilot light out! Can anyone recommend a local person/business who's reliable and fair? A guess is a valve is shot, but I'm not going to chance making it worse. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Seth Logan Square resident for 13+ years

Are you having to relight the pilot light each time that the furnace stops working? If so, it's most likely that the thermocouple needs replacing. This should be an easy repair. Feel free to message me if I can help you troubleshoot.

  • LEH Est. in Chicago 1973

Thanks for all your suggestions folks! Nice! Very neighborly and so appreciated! I went with Manny via "Poppyboy's" suggestion. As I said, we changed the coupling, but it turned out to be a Gas Valve and a pile up of Soot. We're AOK now! Safe and Sound...a bit of a dent in the paycheck, but so worth it. I can now recommend Manny and Sub City Heating and Cooling! They were in and out in under an hour.

"After years of struggling against cheap natural gas prices and variable subsidies, solar electricity is on track to be as cheap or cheaper than average electricity-bill prices in 47 U.S. states -- in 2016, according to a Deutsche Bank report published this week. That’s assuming the U.S. maintains its 30 percent tax credit on system costs, which is set to expire that same year.

Even if the tax credit drops to 10 percent, solar will soon reach price parity with conventional electricity in well over half the nation: 36 states. Gone are the days when solar panels were an exotic plaything of Earth-loving rich people. Solar is becoming mainstream, and prices will continue to drop as the technology improves and financing becomes more affordable, according to the report."

Any affordable vets that will do shots vaccines n emergencies for seizures?

Hi recently just found out my dog has epilepsy. I'm a city college graduate kid working part time who just coughed up 3,000 for er(life savings) I want to know of a vet that will do shots vaccines n real emergency procedures without forcing me to go in debt n if possible make payments as Banfield dropped the ball :(

  • (I love my dog, too...)

  • PetSupplies Plus is having their monthly 'non-emergency' vet this Nov. 2nd (Sunday) from 1-2:30. I don't know if that will help. It is in the back area and the vet there was great, I thought. I kept my dog in the car until it was my turn as there was a line. Located at 3640 N. Elston (773) 583-2288. It was a good experience for me (and dog), but then I really like PetSuppliesPlus and this location. Maybe call and find out?.

Why do bicyclists ride on the sidewalk when they don't have to?

I totally get why cyclists go on the sidewalks sometimes. I did not understand why a young guy had to speed run down Armitage on the sidewalk last night, almost plowing down my 10 pound dog. I also didn't get why the woman was riding on the sidewalk on Humboldt last night when there is the side street to the main street she could have been riding on. I also saw a guy riding on the sidewalk on Palmer, another quiet street.

Since there are so many drivers are so evil threads, I thought I would start a thread on bikers because I saw three last night on the sidewalk for no reason.

  • Susan S. resident

@Tom in Logan SQ The law is anyone over the age of 11 must ride in the street.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

^^^ Yeah but it's not enforced, at all.

While I'm a huge fan of name-calling on this particular topic, better infrastructure does reduce it. However, I tend to see the most offenders away from large artery streets that would (probably) be next in line to get a bike lane. Meaning, more bike lanes aren't going to solve the issue. People who do this have by doing so demonstrated they don't deserve the carrot, get the stick and use it.

    Cops. Tickets. Public humiliation.

LS Trick or Treating- Date and Times?

I'm not sure what tradition is as it's my first year in Logan Square but I wanted to be sure to be ready for any Trick or Treaters if there were to be some.

Anyone have info to share on any Neighborhood traditions?

  • I feel so out of touch! 3 or 4 in the afternoon is so early. When I was little it was a night time activity (6:00 to 8:00) for all ages. Thanks for posting, I'd never have known otherwise.

  • Susan S. resident

Just wanted to address the date question: It's Oct. 31.

Chicagoans may not realize that some places trick or treat Oct. 30 or by municipal fiat.

Actual Plans for Vetran Housing Development

Hi Neighbors,
I know there are multiple posts about the proposed development- instead of posting this link in each of them I hoped to consolidate the posts here so the conversation could be narrowly tailored to thoughts on the actual plan, and potential next steps/ recommendations we could submit. You can find the plan as a pdf attachment by using this url: https://chicago.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=1937901&GUID=B8D9CFC9-30B4-463F-8631-C5DF2B623332&Options=Advanced&Search=

Hi Neighbors,

Alternatively, you can find the application by going to the Chicago City Clerks Website: www.chicityclerk.com, then click on the legislation and records tab, filter search by the Intro Date: 10/8/14; and the Current Controlling Legislative Body (Committee on Zoning,Landmarks and Building Standards)

In regards to the public hearing, I initially heard conflicting information from Alderman Maldonado's office and the Department of Planning and Development. My current understanding is that the hearing was scheduled for committee on Zoning for November 13, 2014 at 10am. Because this is a planned development (PD 599) it must first be approved/recommended by the Planning Commission before it can be heard by Committee on Zoning. Once approved by the Planning Commission, it would likely pass zoning.

The hearings for the Planning Commission happen on the THIRD Thursday of the month at 10am in council chambers at City Hall. The Department of Planning and Development and the Clerk's website do not show it on a November Agenda. I heard second hand that the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation would likely try to get it on the December Agenda.

I'd also like to say that both Alderman Maldonato's office and the Department of Planning and Development were very responsive and helpful in clarifying the process.

Ring lost in Palmer Square

My wife was with our daughter in Palmer Square yesterday afternoon and in the process of packing up lost her engagement ring. We've had a guy come out with a metal detector to search the area to no avail. If you by chance come across a ring in the area, please let me know. We're more than happy to offer a reward.

  • Is there a certain area? Or the whole park?

  • I have a detector. Let me know where and I can check a second time. Make sure she double checks her purse. I find things in there the third time I look. : )

  • Thanks everyone. She was sitting under a dead tree on the N/NW side of the park. We had someone run that area with a metal detector yesterday. The tricky part is she also ran a couple of laps around the track and then headed back to our home, north on Kedzie. So this thing really could be anywhere.

Division and Central Park / Grand Ave - Building

Does anyone know what they are doing with this building? I see they are adding trees to the parking lot, and maybe getting it ready to be re-surfaced. Just curious.

  • MANogueras HUMBOLDT PARK MAN

A much needed addition to the area!

  • Taladrina humboldt park warrior

Can not wait until they finish it. It will be $10 a month and $20 if you want to take the classes and be able to bring a friend. Their other locations has zumba classes. I cannot wait to cancel my Planet Fitness membership. That gym is horrible.

Electricity provider

My new apartment allows me to choose an electric provider. Does anyone have recommendations (or warnings) they can share?

Current tenants in the unit use ComEd, so it may be easiest to stick with that, I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

  • I called to cancel Integrys and return to ComEd. I was they would submit the request to change our provider. But was told no refunds were being given out? Is there something specific I should ask for? Thank you for you help!!

  • Mara, I simply asked for a refund of the amount that I overpaid. I received a $100 Visa debit card this week. Good luck.

Heavy car traffic at alley and drug dealing. New neighbors really hurting the peace and quiet of this neighborhood. Please call police and report so that its more than just a few people calling !!!

I need your help !!!
It was so quiet but someone rented to these people. And now we have loud noise, mechanic work, heavy car traffic and drug dealing. As well as lots of unwanted people in and out . Lets all call police, if we see this until they go elsewhere.

  • @rob, I'm in agreement. We've continually worked hard to make the Spaulding block a great place to live.

  • If you read my previous comments, I'm worried about my neighbors dealing. But thanks for the rude reply!

Holiday Lights Contractor

Does anyone know if there is a service that will put up our holiday lights outside the house?

  • Susan S. resident

Try an internet search including the word "installation." There were news stories about this type of service pre-recession, though I don't know if the companies weathered the storm.

  • Susan, great suggestions. I did a google search prior to posting this but did not use the word installation. The word installation yields many more results.

Roberto Maldonado

Is this guy any good? I have been wondering what he does for HP and I can't figure it out...does anyone know his email address? It's not on his website..which is weird.

  • Realmccoy, I was thinking about how much fun it would be to create a facebook page dedicated to collecting press regarding Muy Mal Donado's shady dealings...:)

  • Almost any city official should have page like that, definetly I'll be fan of Muy Mal Donado's one.

Ald. Maldonado's Land Near Bloomingdale Trail Sold to Trust in Wife's Name

Four years after Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26th) withdrew a proposal to rezone property he owned due to a "conflict of interest," the alderman has transferred the land to a trust controlled by his wife.

A proposal is now before the city to rezone the vacant industrial property — situated along the future Bloomingdale trail — so eight townhomes can be built.

The city's Committee on Zoning Landmark and Building Standards was to hear the industrial-to-residential rezoning request Tuesday, but action was delayed until at least Nov. 13.

Humboldt Park residents were told of the rezoning proposal at 1754-56 N. Central Park Ave. and 1755-57 N. Monticello Ave. on Sept. 20. The vacant properties were listed under Maldonado’s name until 2013, when they were transferred to the Nancy Y. Franco Maldonado Trust.

“The settlor of the trust, Nancy Y. Franco-Maldonado, is my wife. I am a guarantor for the loan which encumbers the property,” Maldonado wrote to the executive director of the Chicago Ethics Board Oct. 7. The alderman has also disclosed his relationship in the site's zoning application.

Transferring the property to his wife is akin to "moving it from your left pocket to your right," according to estate lawyer John Zelenka.

"If he put it in his wife’s trust, he's the guarantor and he's on the mortgage then he owns it," Zelenka added.

Maldonado canceled plans to rezone the same 26th Ward properties in 2009 due to a "conflict of interest," the Chicago Reader reported at the time. He had just become the 26th Ward's alderman, and aldermen have a say in land use policy in their wards.

The properties sit directly adjacent to the upcoming Bloomingdale Trail, part of the larger "606" system that is converting forgotten railroad tracks into a linear park that will stretch through several neighborhoods.

Thanksgiving Day Space

Looking for a space to host a Thanksgiving Day party.

Do you have any ideas?

  • I work by day at what is, at night, a homey event space in the northern end of Humboldt Park. I think a thanksgiving celebration would be perfect. Just email Annie on this page: http://thelivingroom.io

Note that there is no oven on site; you'd need to bring your food from elsewhere.

  • Friends just hosted a wedding shower at an airbnb rented apartment. It was perfect because it had a full kitchen and plenty of space. She only spent $100 a night. Might be a cool idea to look into for Thanksgiving if your own place isn't big enough.

  • Great ideas - Thank you so much!!!

Montreal receives over 80 inches of snow a year to Chicago's 38, my friends that live there were in shock that we in Chicago would put out furniture to save a spot for parking after digging out. They would ask--is it not a public street? Well--yes? Well we Chicagoans know it's complicated. I asked them how the city of Montreal handled it and it was so simple. What the city does when it starts to snow, they execute plowing schedules set up very similar to our street cleaning and snow removal on main arteries here in Chicago. Residents are required to move their cars off one side of the street to allow plows to remove snow up to the curbs in the am and by the the morning the other side would be removed.

I think it's brilliant--any thoughts?

I have a tiny car which helps as often people will dib out quite a generous spot. I calmly reminded her that the street space was public property which simply caused more rage. I'm paying for private parking this year to avoid the constant aggravation and potential nasty encounters. This is going to be a tough habit for some selfish Chicagoans to break.

Yes, I am also not looking forward to this winter, especially since we already have parking problems here in Chicago. My blood pressure is already rising just thinking about it. That would be a great idea with the moving to one side for the plows to come in. We definitely would have to wait awhile. All streets should be one way and have the cars parked at a one way angle giving more room to park This would never work either since the city works backwards instead of forwards. Yikes, soo many cars.
