Looking for a Closet Organizer/Stylist

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

Some constructive advice for next year. (Don't get me wrong, fun times, but much room for improvement)

1. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Put some more thought into the design/layout.
a. There were many dangerous bottlenecks, got lucky nothing went wrong as the lack of function would have crushed people (especially where along the curvy roads with the metal barriers) IE The flow would have been much safer if the vendors were set up 20 feet off the roads instead of right on them, or if there were another way for the masses to move rather than just the roads.
b. Somehow you made one of the largest parks in the city seems like an overcrowded rat maze… poor spacial layout and very little thought into how people walk, and how to get people form stage to stage

2. Add way more port-o-johns, average wait was over 20 minutes after 6pm

3. Make the maps accurate...The mobile app, was misleading. It was stressed multiple times to download the app, and we did. One problem was that the water stations were not located correctly, and I think they were missing all together in areas. Had this been a hot weekend could have been bad situation. Also, the one water station we did find was quite a disappointment...

4. 3 Day Passes did not have wrist bands… why not? One could not leave and come back.. stinks

5. VIP is practically worthless. Who cares about free drinks. The benefit of having a ticket (minus the re-entry) has diminished ten fold and compared to many other festivals standards, hardly deserves a VIP title. Viewing areas were not VIP. bathrooms were same as other bathrooms, just shorter lines, and

I think Glenn brought up one of the best points in terms of layout:

"But don't forget, when the event is mapped out, RF had to plan around 2 ponds, 2 large park buildings and parking lots, 2 tot playgrounds, protected wetlands, Little Cubs Field, fenced in mini soccer fields, and about a dozen baseball diamond backstops."

The southern end of the park has many fewer of these obstacles. When I went to the fest in previous years on the southern end, it felt free and wide open and I was more than happy to shift my concertgoing dollars from the megacluster that is Lolla to a truly enjoyable fest like RF. But I just didn't feel that way about it this year, for many of the reasons people have already stated. This year, there were 129 bands on 7 stages, and if you never rested and saw a band in every single time slot, the best you could do would be to see 35 bands. That's not a complaint, but I'm just using it to make my point: which is that sure, they fit in more stages this year in a bigger swath of park, but I don't feel like the concertgoers were even able to take advantage of such an expanded lineup. There is only so much you can do in three days. So the benefit of having it on the North end of the park is negligible in my opinion.

Riot Fest has shown in the past that it can be a unique, fantastic festival experience, one that has found ways to break away from the the pitfalls that make so many other festivals less enjoyable than they could be. And I think they can do it again, but yes, this was really not the best year.

I live in a three flat in Logan/Avondale and my landlord speaks very little English. He lives in the building and has made it a point to enter my apartment without warning, once I was in the shower and heard a knock on my bathroom door. I freaked out when I heard his voice, got out of the shower, and he was still in my apartment. He has walked up to my roommates sliding glass door (before she hung curtains to prevent him from peering in) he would knock and look into her bedroom until she woke up from his knocking. He has made comments to me when I answer my door shortly after returning home from working out, comments such as "you lookin real good!" then proceeds to stare at me until I hide behind my door and slowly close it. Recently, I came home to a shattered lantern, my balcony table and chairs all moved around. I was scared. The next morning, my roommate sent me a text saying "i think you need to come see this." I walked to the back of our apartment, went out on the balcony only to find our landlord and a couple other guys priming our wrought iron balcony, they had removed all of my lights, moved all of our stuff around, and splattered paint on my table and chairs. I told him he needs to give us 24 hours notice before doing any work like this so I can safely move our belongings and that he needs to reimburse me for the lantern his workers destroyed. He laughed it off. I'm not real sure how to handle this? He has my cell phone number and my roommate's cell phone number, he can easily have his daughter (who speaks perfect English) communicate with us to give us a heads up for any future work that needs to be performed. We really love our neighborhood, don't have any other issues other than the rather pressing issue of feeling a bit sexually harassed by our landlord. I hate to use that term but I'm not sure what else to call it? I don't know what to do about the comments made to me and entering our apartment without notice?

Thank you, llitman. I appreciate your feedback. I have actually been looking at available apartments for the past week or so. I'm also working on a letter with the help of a friend who is an attorney to let my landlord know how he has violated our lease, privacy, and safety. I've got all of my emails saved, the emails to my roommate and a couple of friends, explaining the incidents in which he has made us feel uncomfortable so I have the dates and I can recall the specifics of each instance. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around him knocking on my bathroom door while I was in the shower then refraining from leaving my apartment while he knew I was showering. This is the second time I've lived in a building that is also occupied by the owner/landlord and it just never feels like it's my home, I feel like I'm living in someone else's home and simply paying them for it. I've learned my lesson the hard way, I won't live in a landlord or owner occupied building ever again.

I'm glad to hear you are being proactive at protecting yourself. I have lived in bad apartment situations and finally found a wonderful place I could call home. It is worth every penny to feel safe in your apartment and find a "home". My sentiments are exactly as litman described.

The Latin Kings, Maniac Latin Disciples, Spanish Cobras and all of the other splinters of gangs is why it was cheap. BTW, when I lived in Bucktown 25 years ago, I had a gang POS living across from me, and my neighbor was a witness to a driveby shooting. Same thing in Wicker, and 35 years ago in Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park.

You can have the crime and cheap housing, or you can have a nice neighborhood with market rate housing. Only you can make the choice for you and your family.

Construction on 3200 Block of Potomac

Does anyone know what's going on with the pipes being put in on the first half of the 3200 block of Potomac? Curious if this is a first phase that will ultimately continue down Potomac or if its just work in that one spot. There are a lot of pipes stacked up on Spaulding just off Potomac, so I'm guessing the former, but I thought someone here may have heard more specific info. Thanks in advance.

  • Looks like 3215 had some sewer work done to their building. Doesn't look like work that will affect entire block.

Riot fest tix? I want!!! We got burned

Hey neighbors my husband and I got burned on fake tix. We want to buy a Sunday pass anyone got one or two they are not using? Also, If you live directly off the park bring your address and ID and get free tix then sell them to my husband and I! We live one block off park and got denied the free tix :( so bogus!

  • Thanks for info ! Good to know for next year !

  • The first 2 years if you showed your id(not sure of radius) then you got 2 tix. however, as is always the case when somebody does a nice thing, people received their neighbor tix and then scalped them on the street. That's why you had to have id and went right in instead of getting tix.

I don't know of any other fest that gives away tickets bc of neighbor inconvenience, but everyone these days seems to feel entitled.

Anyone tried out Logan Square Fitness yet?

Just wondered what the overall vibe is, if it gets packed at certain hours, etc. Has anyone joined - what do you think?

The classes are free too, I've taken the yoga and x-fit class' and both are great, and the instructors are nice too. I only live two blocks away so I've never used the locker rooms, but I don't have any complaints, and its going to get bigger. They're going to open a much larger class area as well.

I like the month to month option, especially since I had no idea if I would like it/want to stay when I first signed up. I have done a bunch of the regularly scheduled yoga classes, which are good. I have also gone to some early-morning (6:30am) pop-up yoga classes, which were great but only had 2 or 3 people. I hope they add regular morning yoga classes, but I have been told by the guy at the front desk that they are planning to push back evening classes and add additional class times as well (they said Sept. 23rd is the planned date for this, but they are notoriously bad about keeping their promises in terms of dates--see: Grand Opening).

TL;DR Definitely worth it to join, especially if you live very close.

My advice is, regardless of which company you go with, to make sure that they are properly licensed and insured to come into your home and handle your things. I'm also a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), so I bring a level of ethics, confidentiality, and professional training to ensure you the best experience possible.

Lots of folks can help you go through stuff and arrange it. But a Professional Organizer, trained through NAPO, is uniquely qualified to not only facilitate your decision-making, but to also transfer those organizing skills to you, so you can continue to be happy and organized in your space going forward.

RIOT FEST: How can this be okay?

I'm not sure how long riot feat is supposed to last into the night, but as a new mom it's disturbing to be able to hear the music in my living room (living more than 2 blocks away from the park, at 9pm).

There has to be some sort of noise ordinance against this, right? I didn't pay for a ticket to the festival for a reason, and my child has to suffer because he can't sleep, which then means we all suffer.

I know if my neighbors were playing music loud enough for me to hear in my home I could call 311, but this is ridiculous.

  • Tracy BB Super Cute Tracy

Although, I agree there is no real parking solution, if the parking becomes permit parking for a weekend during RF, then that same permit parking should apply to all fests that happen, for the duration of the fest. Think of all the money the city could make on tickets.

I live on Kedzie by the park and can say parking was a huge issue this weekend for me. If my area had neighborhood parking I'm sure it would have been ok. pR parking was way easier as people were coming and going all day.

Riot Fest was louder and longer than PR weekend. But it ended every night at 10. Aside from the last band on Saturday that was so loud my house was shaking I found it less disruptive from a noise perspective. And the noise didn't go on all night long.

The people coming to the neighborhood didn't bother me. In fact because the main box office was on Cali it seemed less crowded people wise than PR weekend.

While RF was inconvenient it was well run and more controlled than other festivals. I might leave town next year to avoid the hassles but whether I do or not I welcome them back. Based on where I live I suspect there are few more unconvinced than I was, but I survived it and can do so again.

Buying commercial real estate?

Does anyone have experience with, or can refer me to someone who has, buying commercial real estate? My business is losing its lease in a few years, and I'm considering buying something with maybe an apartment attached? It's very difficult for us to find space because we have pretty unique space requirements, so I'd rather not have to worry about leases ending ever again.

I know the rules for commercial are different from residential, so I'd love to just casually get some info without any pressure. Or, if you have experience, you can post your story here...

Thanks, everyone!

2 shot in Humboldt Park neighborhood

http://voices.suntimes.com/news/breaking-news/2-shot-in-humboldt-park-neighborhood/

September 13, 2014

A teenage boy and a man were both shot Saturday evening in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The 17-year-old boy and the man, 20, were both shot in the leg about 7:45 p.m. in the

1700 block of North Kimball, police News Affairs Officer Bari Lemmon said.
They were both taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where both of their conditions had stabilized, Lemmon said.

  • RAKARWOWSKI RETIRED CITY WORKER, CLEANING UP HUMBOLDT PARK

The two that were shot are gang bangers, I can't wait till the last of them move out and HP will not have to be connected to violence like this any more! We all must keep working to clean up HP together and get the criminals out.

  • Is there a reason that there has been increased activity at Kimball and Wabansia? I was hoping the fights and the shooting last month were isolated incidents, but it appears to be continuing and all incidents have been between 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm when people are out and walking around.

Thankfully the lights did come back on last Monday, and we were surprised that nothing like this happened while the streets were dark.

Red Miyata Bike Stolen from Wrightwood/Spaulding area

We unfortunately/absentmindedly left our garage door open for a couple hours this afternoon and my bike was stolen. :(

The bike is a red '80s Miyata road bike with white origin-8 saddle and white tape on bullhorn handlebars. The bike is on the smaller side -- can't remember exact dimensions.

I'll be searching CL, but please let me know if you see it around. Thank you!

  • We lost a fuchsia colored mountain bike the same way a month or so ago in the same area.

  • aya

Thanks David! I will do so! Smiley, I'm sorry you lost your bike, too. Such a bummer.

How to avoid parking my car on a street cleaning day while I'm on vacay?

I wonder if you guys have a solution to this. I park my car on the streets in Logan Square where no permit is needed. I'll be going out of town for ten days and am afraid that during one of those days they may put up "no parking" signs for cars to be moved during street cleaning days. I don't want my car towed while I'm out of town and unable to move my car.

You might suggest that I have a friend move it but I just moved here and don't know many people yet who would be willing to do that for me. So I need a different solution.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

  • My office has parking for $2 per day. It's not in the neighborhood but is not to far from the Blue Line.

  • WindyCityJones Actor, landlord, proud Chicagoan!

I've read that if there's a street cleaning while you're on vacation you can show your flight itinerary and contest it. The whole "must move your car every seven days" is crazy but luckily not enforced in my neighborhood. There are lots of weeks that go by where I don't drive my car. That's why we have public transit. ;)

Logan Square workouts?

I'v recently seen people working out in a group, with equipment, on the boulevard. I also saw a couple working with a trainer another night while I was walking home on the boulevard. Are there any groups available to join like this?

I'm currently looking to sign up at a new gym but I do better with classes and guided workouts. I'm willing to pay but I'm looking for something that's finically friendly and local if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

  • I work for GhFitlab at 1730 N Western. If you're looking for personal training, please check us out. We offer everyone a free first session, but if you email me, I can sweeten the deal for you. Prices start at about 80 per session with a monthly package.

  • I run in Palmer Square and see someone training people in the park there, too. Would love to find a group trainer as well. Just started working from home full time, which means I left my awesome trainer in the burbs who was just $55 per session. ...

Shoe dyer?

Does anyone know a shoe shop that will dye shoes a different color? I bought these boots online thinking that they are a deep purple but after I received them I realized that they're brown. I tried to find shoes like this in deep purple and they don't exist. Someone told me that certain shoe stores will dye shoes different colors. I'm going to call around but if anyone has a good recommendation please let me know

  • Project North Lawndale Why are the W.Side Alderman Paid for NOTHING?

Hi Jen.. Yes they are being dyed.. they cost to much to return.. they came and were a lighter Tan.. I'm having them dyed a darker brown..

  • Jen

    Awesome! Thanks everyone
