Looking for a 1 (or 2) bedroom near Blue Line

You know you are getting desperate when you view M. Fishman properties...what a sad day.
I am looking for a 1-2 bed in Logan in a relatively good location (under $1,300) that allows dogs (although I have found that many places that accept cats with make an exception for my 3 legged pup). Any suggestions? The amount of times I have hit refresh on the craigslist page today is unhealthy. If anyone has a lead on something opening up in a good building for May 1st, I would be extremely grateful!

Burglaries Reported

Just wanted everyone to know the cops have been patrolling the neighborhood today looking for a person or persons who were breaking into houses. My neighbor told us a patrol car stopped to let him know. It sounds like it's just homes, but make sure your garages are secured as well.

Hit and Run on Logan Blvd and Sacramento?

At about 10:20 tonight, I heard a car screech to a halt and someone screaming. When I ran to see what had happened, I saw an injured man being loaded into an SUV which proceeded to speed off south on Sacramento. Several police cars followed. Anyone know what happened?

Humboldt: Anyone else hear manic church bells around 12:20-25 AM (Sat night/Sun morning on 4/20)

Took the dog for a late-night walk and there was the sound of manic church bells going off for at least 5 minutes (could have been going on longer, I just didn't notice them until I took the dog outside). I am near lemoyne and fairfield and it was hard to determine where they were coming from, but it sounded like it was just a few blocks south east of where I was.

Gotta say, it was creepy listening to that outside at this hour, alone with the dog. I couldn't find any rhythm to the bells. It sounded as if people were just randomly whacking them. They were strong, intentional sounds - not like the wind was doing it (was trying to tell myself that was the case, but the more I listened the less I thought that was possible). It ended right before I got back into the house around 12:30. Have the window open to hear if they go off again.

Full disclosure: I just watched a zombie movie. Please tell me this is a regular occurrence and I just can't hear rhythm in bells. Hoping I just I freaked myself out and the church actually does this every night ~12:20. But I've lived in the immediate area for 5+ years and I frequently walk my dog around this time and I've never heard this before.

Anyone else hear this? Anyone have an idea of a church that rings crazy bells at 12:20am on a Sat night? Is this some kind of Easter thing I don't get?

Hello, I'm new to this site. I signed up because I appreciate the updates from folks in the area. I'm in the triangle bordered by Milwaukee, California and Armitage.

Does anyone here want to see our Alderman put up signs on existing poles that say "Respect Our Community, Do Not Litter" ? I saw these signs in Andersonville when I lived there and I believe they actually helped. Right now, I'm not sure the folks here are aware of the benefits of not dropping their trash on the street or in front of their houses.

Also, the Chase grammar school should start a no litter campaign in their early grades. It just takes a guest speaker to come out for 40 minutes once a year. That's how I learned not to litter back in the 70's. Since then, the awareness seems to have dropped off.

I'd love to here if anyone has discussed or thought about solving the litter problem in this area.

  • Jim Mitchell 11-year Logan Square resident

OK, Michael, tell us, because you put it out there: Which are the one or two cultures that litter, and which is the one that is "to [sic] scared to say anything." Please, go hog wild here. Define these "cultures" in as much depth as you feel appropriate, without reference to race. Have at.

  • I know this was started about litter in the residential area of LS, but I just wanted to invite everyone to the Humboldt Park Earth Day Cleanup this Saturday April 26th at 9AM, starting at the Boathouse.

I know this was started about litter in the residential area of LS, but I just wanted to invite everyone to the Humboldt Park Earth Day Cleanup this Saturday April 26th at 9AM, starting at the Boathouse.
Every year hundreds of volunteers come together to get the park ready for summer, including many families and school children. I agree that teaching people while they are young about litter, respect, etc really gives people ownership and teaches them that these public spaces belong to us taxpayers - and that the freedom to use them and the responsibility to maintain them are 2 sides of one coin.
Also, many neighborhoods are doing "clean and greens" this Saturday. Get your neighbors out with their brooms and you will see great results - and maybe make a few new friends as well!

What's Happening To The Paseo?

I walked down the Paseo the other day and noticed that CO-CO'S had went out of business. I then noticed about 90% for all the privately owned businesses on Division St. from California to Rockwell were also closed. Even Bank O Popular failed and has been vacant ever since. A good friend told me even the old polish sausage factory sale has fallen apart. Does anyone know what is happening that all of these businesses have failed? Is there any hope of new places opening, maybe a wider range of stores would attract all the new people of the neighborhood to shop there. Any suggestions?

  • there's enough money to support business, but that block is on lockdown. unless you are the "right" kind if person opening a business -and a lot of those people already moved away. or dont have enough money for maldonado campaign contributions.

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

What does lock down mean? Is this one of the CHICAGO WAYS where one vets for years to open a business and eventually gives up? I have read articles about Illinois being Business unfriendly. Chicago also has weird ways of deciding what businesses open or get inspected quickly.

Looking for Good, Reliable Cleaning Service

I posted on this topic a few years ago but with moving, remodeling, etc. etc., I was never able to get around to actually hiring a service! With that, does anyone have recommendations for a cleaning service (individual or company) for our condo in Logan Square? Trustworthy, reasonably priced, and good work product? We'd like to have them come by the house once a month (I think!)

Thanks!

I started using one of them about 2 years ago and it is so convenient and makes such an amazing cup of coffee that I actually don't want to go pay money for someone to make me some. Plus, it is absolutely the best device for making iced coffee if you like that! I know this isn't a coffee shop suggestion but had to throw it out there as someone who used to always go buy coffee at shops before I got my aeropress. Ipsento actually sells them or you can get it ok Amazon.

Red light camera, diversy and California

I definitely suggest watching the video if you get one of these tickets. I got one of these and was thoroughly outraged, until I reviewed the video and realized that what I assumed would be my triumphant vindication via footage showing me cautiously stopping and then making a right turn on red, was mostly in my head. These cameras have unquestionably made *some* intersections safer. whether the contract was awarded fairly/competently and issues of which intersections are appropriately are separate issues. If I had my way I'd ticket everyone who so much as blows through a stop sign, and it would have everything to do with quality of life and nothing to do with revenue. But, police, cameras, street lane and crosswalk striping, etc all cost money. When I was learning how to drive in the late 80s there were cops ticketing for traffic violations on a regular basis, several decades of police department staffing cuts have really taken a toll on basic civility on the street IMO.

Cheap hat source?

Hey all,
I'm in dire need of a cheap, black fedora -- any condition or quality -- by tomorrow. Is this something that can be found in the neighborhood? Maybe the thrift stores? Mega Mall? Any of those shops up on Milwaukee north of the square?

I'd prefer not to spend a lot, as this is just for a blues brothers thing.

Any tips would be great!

Hi! If anyone has old sheets, pillow cases, rugs, towels, clothing (to stuff the pillow cases with), blankets, etc. I would be happy to collect. I have a car and can pick up anywhere.

They can be a little worn, just need them to be washed and clean.

We will use them to make beds for cats and dogs that are stuck on the cold hard ground of their cages while they're waiting for their (hopefully) forever home at a local open-access shelter.

The beds make a big difference to these dogs and cats. Shelter life is stressful. A warm bed helps reduce stress.

I would be thrilled to pick up any donated dog/cat supplies too. Unopened dog and cat food, litter, treats and calming toys are always appreciated.

I am planning on going to the shelter on Tuesday and would love to bring a carful of donations if you have anything laying around! Thank you! The dogs and cats thank you!

If you do some spring cleaning in the next weeks or months, and come up with more goodies for the animals, message me and I'm happy to pick up/deliver.

Here's a list of what they need if you have it laying around or want to donate anything:
    - blankets, sheets, towels, rugs, pillow cases, old clothes (bedding for animals, helps reduce stress and give comfort)
    - any unopened dog or cat food or treats
    - pet meds (some of the animals they get in are very sick and they'll take whatever they can get to help them get healthy so they have a better chance of getting picked by a rescue (only then do they go to the vet)
    - hot dogs as treats - ALDI has cheap ones (this doesn't sound the healthiest, I know, but sometimes they have to try to fatten some of the skinny ones up and try to get them to eat anything if they're "shut down" because they're scared)
    - kongs and peanut butter (boredom is rough for these animals. Due to the number of animals and lack of staff/resources, they don't get a ton of human attention)
    - calming products (Rescue remedy, etc)
    - calming toys (such as stuffed animals without squeekers)
    - moms and dads :) Hit me up if you're interested in rescuing a dog or cat :)

Thanks again everyone. It was nice meeting a bunch of you!

Over two years ago, our block organized a petition to request new street-lights on our block. 50 people who live on the block signed it. We submitted the petition with a detailed explanatory letter and request, including drawings, to our Alderman, Roberto Maldonado.

I have personally checked on the status of this request well over a dozen times since then, by email, telephone, and in-person. The Alderman's office did agree to have the light bulbs increased to a larger wattage, but there has been no answer to the actual request, and I think that the high-watt bulbs were already in place.

Our block is an above standard size due to Grand Ave. being on the south end of it. We encompass addresses from the 1000's through the 1150's.

We only have 5 streetlights on our block to illuminate the sidewalks and street in front of 30 city lots, and the two on the end are located on the alley. This leaves only 3 lights to enhance security and safety and act as a preventive measure. They are 125-175 feet apart, leaving large swaths of sidewalk under the cover of darkness.

We have the old light poles with only one high lamp.

And, all of the lights are located on the west side of the street. There isn't a single light pole on the east side of the street!

I checked with the city and filed a request directly with CDOT last year and got a service request number, which I have on file.

We have had great success in stopping other types of crime, but in part due to the darkness, my neighbors still suffer catalytic converter theft, broken car windows, scratched paint and dents, etc. and we believe that our safety and quality of life would quickly and effectively be preserved and enhanced by getting proper illumination through an adequate number of properly placed streetlights.

If you have any helpful suggestions I would appreciate it.

Matthew: How far apart are the street lights on your block where you live? Are they on both sides of the street? I bet you won't answer this question.

If you had a broken window on your house before you bought it, wouldn't you just buy the house you wanted and could afford and just fix the window? Or would you buy the house and leave the window broken? This is not a rhetorical question as you seem to be telling me to accept things the way they are because I should have bought and afforded a house in a perfect neighborhood with perfect street lighting. I bet you won't answer this question either.

I don't see the big deal with a community (our block) wanting something, going through the proper known channels, and wanting a response. We have identified a problem, documented it, and articulated it to our elected official. It has been over 2 years, and we have been patient. In the meanwhile, some people (not me) have been the victim of petty crime.

I had really hoped to get some good suggestions or advice, and besides gpblight's ideas, a few of which echo my own, I have gotten none. I really didn't think that this type of thing had to be brought to the attention of the mayor, but maybe it does.

By the way, gpblight, I will not upload all of my neighbor's phone numbers and addresses on the petition to any public forum for obvious reasons. I am happy to provide it to officials should I be given or create the opportunity.

Looking for an Optical store

Hello everybody,
I need feedbacks on a really good spot to get new eye glasses. Am looking for a place where they will actually take time to help you look for a pair that will look great and not any pair because they are nice. I went yesterday to a place and the only help I got was that they pointed out to me the frames for women and men. I feel awful now wasting my time and money. But at least I got a copy of my prescription.

  • Eye Candy Optics on Division has always been very helpful

  • Kay of East Village like a good neighbor.....

As someone who wears contacts and glasses I hate the regulation that you have to get an eye exam once a year. My vision has not changed as an adult. But to get contacts and now even eye glasses you have to have a prescription once a year. That is just costly and time consuming for something I don't really have a need for. Anyone else find this to be the case?

Our gentle greyhound has a puncture wound, or little mutt was lucky. These dogs were very aggressive, and one got loose twice, and the owners did not seem very concerned about it. Nick had to fight them off alone while the owners watched.

After the initial attack, one of the dogs managed to get loose a second time.

One pit bull was white female, about 80 pounds, hanging teats, recently had a litter; the second, sex uncertain, white with brown and black spots on her back, with some kind of doggie backpack. Owners were two white males, heavyset, scruffy goatees, very short hair, balding, in late 20's to mid 30's.

We plan on attending next CAPS meeting about this, but wanted neighbors to be on the lookout.

Babysitter/nanny recommendations

Anyone have any insight into where I can find quality and dependable in-home child care? I need someone for my 2 boys (aged 4 & 1). We only need about 20 hours/week but are having problems finding someone for these hours. Advice?

  • Emilie 5-year West Bucktowner

Finding good pt nanny candidates is tough. I interviewed more than I expected because they were a mixed bag, lots of eccentrics who were interesting people but not a good fit for us. I also had a ton of no-shows and just plain flakey candidates. Our best ones came through Care.com too. The site requires a basic background check for the nanny to even get listed. I think that extra hoop to jump gives you a group that's more serious and on the ball about finding a good fit.

  • care.com is a good site I would also check local schools depending on when you need them since teachers will be out for summer soon and depending on what school type they are coming from the are background check and finger printed already and have proof of such, also posting here or at local gathering sites like Starbucks will get to lots of people also local colleges especially early childhood and teachers in training looking to add to their experience. Good luck

The ghetto liquor store gone with the bangers. So yes the bangers are going away with every hang out we close.

Internet Provider

Hey neighbors,

I was curious what your experience with internet service has been like in the Humboldt Park area. I currently have Comcast which has fine service but the price has gone up in recent months after the promotional price they gave me expired. I'm now paying around $75 vs. the $30 I used to pay. I've called Comcast and tried to find a solution but I was told that's the best they can do for me if I want internet only.

That price seems high but I'm not sure if there are any other companies who even service this area. Anyone have a similar experience or some advice?

Thanks!
Tim

  • Btw, it took a few different calls to Clear to get the best rate, and i had the impression that different phone reps had varying levels of discretion to offer incentives to stay, though I also always waited 2 weeks between my 'end-me' calls. Anti-churn program incentives may have been changing in the meantime, depending on manager & company retention goals.

  • Taladrina humboldt park warrior

I have ATT. I have had it for years and it works fine for me. It went up from 19 to 45 last year. I would quit Comcast they seem so expensive.

  • Ugh, I had a guy come to the door today to ask me if anyone talked to me about the green credits I had earned. He just needed to see my electric bill...

now that the city has opted everyone into Integrys you will be getting bombarded by sales reps. I opted out of integrys by calling them and when the sales people come by I tell them I am not the decision maker. They will pester you until they finally get the hint>

Lost Passport and Debit Card East Room Logan Square

I lost my passport and debit card Saturday at The East Room on Milwaukee and Medill. I of course have replaced my debit, but am hoping someone picked up my passport. The name is Diana. My passport is a the standard blue U.S. version. Expiration date 2018.

  • Kerri Hacker chicagosinglesclub.com record label in LoganSquare

Check your messages on Facebook in the Other mailbox section... I lost my uPass and someone contacted me there when they found it. I never look at it so I had already replaced it.

  • Same as above ^^^^. I contacted a wallet-loser via facebook once as well.

***Make sure you check on facebook itself, in the messages tab to the far left on the home screen, in the "Other" folder. If someone who isn't a friend of a friend messages you, the message will, oftentimes, end up in there. It won't show up on your phone, and you won't even get a notification about it. So check manually***

  • Report your passport lost with the Chicago PD asap and possibly the Department of State. Start checking your detailed credit reports regularly. If your passport fell into the wrong hands, you could have years of aggravating stress and misery awaiting. I speak from 14 years of experience as a victim. I hope you find it soon!

Logan Self service car wash with shampoo?

Does anyone know of a self service car wash with interior shampoo in the Logan-ish area?

  • Art Logan Square resident

You might have to go to the big on at 2111 W Fullerton Ave, Express Car Wash. I don't think it is self serve, though.

That one across from the Post Office was always a bit of a ripoff anyway...

  • Windy City Car Wash at 3265 W Fullerton btwn Sawyer & Spaulding does a great job with detailing. They have a second, newer location at North & Western Aves, but I haven't been to that spot yet.

4 reasons I won't be patronizing the Harding Tavern.

4 trees cut down to make way for what?

  • Susan S. resident

Yes, owner grew up in Logan Square. I think he does have neighborhood's best interests at heart. What that means to him, to you, to me may be different.

  • With trees or without, I am happy to see another booming business in LS. I tried to return to get another delicious burger last night but there was a long waiting list and not a spare chair at the bar.

I think they will do just fine with or without the OP's support.

Walked to Parts & Labor instead and our hunger and thirst was satisfied. Noticed a scraggly looking tree in the parkway on the way, but didn't call the city to cut it down. Instead, I choose to patiently wait and see if it comes back to life in the coming months.

Just like I will patiently wait and see if new trees get planted and judge not my neighbor.

It would be nice to see new trees planted. In the meanwhile I will sip more of their beer and contemplate the Latin names of trees learned long ago in Science class.

And I may plant a tree on Earth Day.

Humboldt Park: Is Area of Central Park and North Ave Safe?

I lived north of the park as did and have some friends for a long time with no complaints. My in-laws are considering a move a few blocks west of the park, between North and Division. I have heard in the past that HP west of Kedzie is 'dicey.'

I would love someone to tell me that I have been misinformed. It is particularly important because the in-laws care for our toddler who loves to be outside. All of that activity takes place during the day time.

They currently rent in the 2400 block of north Lowell. I am wondering how the neighborhoods compare.

Thanks for any feedback.

cops on Spaulding

Saw a couple of cop cars & was just wondering what was going on last night near the church on Spaulding, just south of Division. Anyone know?

  • The word from various neighbors is that there has been a juvenile from a Section 8 apartment nearby targeting homeowners car and house windows and shooting them with a BB or pellet gun.

They may be looking for him based on your neighbor's complaints.

Homebrewers?

I've been thinking it would be nice to find some like minded home-brewers and beer fans in the Logan Square/Bucktown area (or anywhere nearby). I've never been part of a brewing "club", but I'd like to find a way to get together with some fellow brewers in a semi-regular, informal way at local bars. We could compare notes, techniques, and of course beers in a non-intimidating way - I'm a casual homebrewer who's only been at it a few years....

We could compare notes, techniques, and of course beers in a non-intimidating way - I'm a casual homebrewer who's only been at it a few years. I approach it more from the art side than science, but it'd be great to talk to other people with different takes and experience levels. Nothing's set up right now, but if there's interest let me know and I can organize - I'm open to suggestions for days, times, and venues. Thanks!

  • So after a successful first round we've set up another time to meet, on Thursday May 1st. If there's anyone else out there who I haven't been in touch with please feel free to contact me directly!

  • Check out the Chicago Home Brewers Group. We are group of home brewers from all over Chicago, NW Indiana and parts of Wisconsin. We meet every third Wednesday of every month at Fischmanns on Milwaukee and Lawrence at 7pm.

We also have very active online forums through a bulletin board and Facebook page. The links for both forums can be found at the bottom of the following page:

Anyone need moving boxes?

I have several empty boxes of various sizes that are sturdy and would be good for moving. I don't want to just throw them out in the alley out back in case it rains before someone grabs them. PM me if interested. They'll be first come, first served and I will update this when they're gone.
Thanks!

  • Yes, I need moving boxes! Probably can't come to get them until after 6 pm on Friday. How can I contact you privately?

Looking for an artist friendly 2 bedroom

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking for a 2 bedroom in Logan and I figured it couldn't hurt to post here in addition to the rest of our online searching and hitting the pavement looking for "for rent" signs. The rents are going up so fast but we're hoping to find something max $1200 in Logan. Cat friendly and laundry in the building would be excellent. We want to use the 2nd bedroom as an office/studio space since we're both artists. Any leads appreciated!

New businesses coming to Milwaukee between Spaulding and Kimball/Diversey?!

Walking to the Blue Line in the mornings I've noticed a lot of heavy work going on at the long building 2760 - 2774 N Milwaukee (from a couple doors north of Spaulding up to the Gap building). I also noticed one of the thrift shops there has a "moving sale" sign. So I was curious and looked up the permit:

...ALTERATION OF 2760+2774'S 1ST+BSMT FLRS TO 6+2 COMMERCIAL UNITS RESPECTIVELY, CONSTRUCTION OF 3RD FLR ADDITIONS, CONVERSION OF 2760+2774'S 2ND+3RD...

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

  • I was thinking baggy shorts & $175 sandals.

  • Glad to see something happening with that building!! The row of mannequin bottoms gives our 'hood character 😁 (although I will be happy to see them gone)

After reading the population stats offered by the "Portal", I decided to actually look up the stats from the census.
The US Census reports either as a county or a census tract, so I looked at the approx. 20 tracts which covers the area bounded by Western Ave., Chicago Ave., Central Park, and Bloomingdale.
There is a total population of 38,522. Of that the largest segment is caucasion at 18,729 (or 49%) The second largest segment is Black, at 6,574 (or 17%). This leaves 34% for "other" which is made up of Asian, Latino, and people that identify as 2 or more races.
After hearing for years that Humboldt Park was a "Puerto Rican " neighborhood, I was surprised to see the actual facts. And while some city maps define Humboldt Park as going all the way to Cicero Avenue and Kinzie Street, going farther West and South on the census map only gives a larger number of Blacks in the population stats.

Jason W: Enjoy the silence. Zero accountability. PRCC and the Portal is not a neighborhood-friendly organization if you define the 'hood as including the other 78% of us who live here and do not share the Culture PRCC promotes. They represent the radical 10% of a declining minority population and create and promote things like the "No se Vende!" campaign when there are hundreds of houses in the area that are for sale. Asking one question of them is being racist in their opinion, even if you are Hispanic/Latino. They get thousands of dollars of our tax dollars to run the center, the newspaper, in addition to having taken over the beautiful and historic horse stables inside Humboldt Park without an ounce of authentic community input. One thing remains the same about that place. They are still shoveling stuff out of that building long after the horses are gone!

I remember them organizing when the lady from Tipsy Cake (a local bakery that closed their retail space here near the Paseo Boriqua - Division St. between Western and California - but keeps her bakery here and employs several residents) joked with someone interviewing her and she called her confections "crack cake" and playfully referred to one that had too many bullet holes in it.

Just yesterday, NPR ran a piece where a researcher broadly studied online reviews of food, and found that the majority of reviews compared sweets and desserts to drug addiction.

I just took a walk around the neighborhood and noticed several apartment buildings with around 20 units a building, gutted and being rehabbed. These buildings use to be mainly filled with Puerto Ricans but now they are empty. A 23 unit building across the street from me was almost all Latino and some African American and many were gang bangers. The building has been gutted, rehabbed and now there is only a couple of Puerto Ricans living there and I understand most of them are moving out this year. So, yes, you just need to go out and see for yourself how drastically HP has changed from a few years ago.
