Hi

Will be interested in how this site compares to Nextdoor Edgebrook. I am hopeful this site remains respectful to all with useful info.

Beautification

Thanks to Edgebrook neighbor Gina Metelica for taking on planting and watering a few flowers / plantings on the Lehigh side of the underpass at Hiawatha - which is also the focus of the wonderful "Neighborhood Connection Project":

From 1972 until 1993 Jon Burge tortured over 200 African American and Latino men to confess to crimes in which many never committed. Burge tortures were able to successful continue despite his removal from the Chicago Police Department in 1993.

Burge nor any detective working under his command that tortured criminal suspects were ever charged with torture, mainly as pointed out by the Cook County Special Prosecutor in 2006, Burge and other detectives should have been charged, however he nor any detective that worked under his command could be charged as the statute of limitations expired.

In 2008, Burge alone was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice for lying about the tortures. In 2010 he was found guilty on all charges and subsequently in January, 2011 sentenced to four and a half years in a federal prison.

Burge is set to walk out of a federal prison this October, 2014. Be aware that Burge continues to collect a pension of more then 37 hundred dollars a month. He should be considered armed and dangerous, someone that may have influence with other corrupt cops in the city of Chicago.

Your first post is an anti-police rant in a neighborhood that is home to many of the fine men and women on the Chicago Police Department? The first of Burge's accusers were the scumbag Wilson brothers who murdered Chicago Police Officers Fahey and O'Brien in 1982. I lived in Beverly at the time and these two thugs terrorized the entire neighborhood. I'm not condoning torture, but don't try to portray all of Burge's alleged "victims" as innocents.

    NICE FIRST POST!

Thank you for this wonderful Spam. Many EveryBlock users (I won't name them; they'd be embarrassed) love these advertisements. Don't be mad at Robin; she just doesn't want the business she recommends all the time to have competition. She gets cranky. We all love her anyway. Well those who haven't muted her. Somebody asked me to let you know the EB policy on advertising:

    No Advertising. That's it, basically.

Started in Spring of 2010, the Neighborhood Connection Project (NCP) is a citizen-led initiative to build community by repairing and beautifying the Metra railroad underpass located at Kinzua, Hiawatha and Lehigh. After securing the input and support of a diverse cross section of the citizens, civics, businesses and the wider community, as well as the support of the 41st Ward Aldermanic Office for required pre-beautification repairs to the underpass, we were joined by our ongoing partners, Green Star Movement (GSM) and After School Matters (ASM). Phase I underpass beautification efforts were ready to begin and indeed started finally in Spring 2013. GSM worked with ASM's teen interns and our local artists and community volunteers to produce the mural on the East side of the underpass, which was completed in Summer 2013. We continued together on Phase II completing the West wall work in summer 2014. During summer 2015 we will finish the project by joining the two bricolage murals together in the center. The joining of the East and West sides will be done by meeting in the middle with a golden stake. In the case of NCP, we will use golden tiles. The themes of the mural were decided by the community and the actual art reflects both our neighborhood's history, as well as the greenery and vegetation of the area. Special homage is paid to our Native American predecessors and the famous Hiawatha train that ran on these very tracks. Upon completion, NCP will be the largest outdoor public art bricolage mural on Chicago's Northwest side.

So far, the NCP community includes:
    300+ citizens
    60 teen apprentices
    23 businesses
    7 artists
    4 local civics
    2 government agencies
    1 Alderwoman
    1 Chamber of Commerce
    1 Public Library
    1 Railroad Historical Society
    Green Star Movement
    After School Matters

Truck and 2 guys to move some furniture?

If anyone does any side jobs moving things? I am trying to get DR table, 8 chairs, buffet from Northbrook to me in Edgebrook. 10.4 miles. I called a moving company (Burrows) and they want $300. This is more than I want to pay. Its not difficult furniture.

  • Unless you have a friend who will help you move it for free you aren't going to do too much better than $300. That price is not unreasonable.

  • Check out Task Rabbit. I've used it many times and it's always been a good experience.
