Problems in 20th ward

Hello everyone, I'm curios as to how many of us think that some of the problems that plague Woodlawn stem from the alderman? I am new to Woodlawn but I want to know what other residents think about the job Willie Cochran has done.

  • Why the heck are they tearing down one public housing project to build another?? Why the heck are they tearing down one public housing project to build another?? Woodlawn began its decline after urban renewal eliminated the commerical hubs that were Cottage Grove and 63rd st. and replaced them with public housing and empty lots. The people making the decisions about Woodlawn's future DO NOT have the property owners and tax payers in mind, they only care about the people in public housing. Property owners need a voice to speak out against this current agenda to turn Woodlawn into one large public housing subdivision. TWO and the Apostolic church should NOT be the only ones who have a say in what happens in Woodlawn

...and there is a question of sustainability.

"The condition of those buildings raises questions about how the nonprofit—along with its sister agency, The Woodlawn Organization, better known as TWO—manages the steady stream of anti-poverty money it collects each year. Independent auditors found that their ledgers continue to come up short, and meeting basic expenses, including payroll and building maintenance"

Keeping a Close Eye on CPD's Glenn Evans

I'm not going to bore anyone with the details but I have (as well as many others in the 3rd District) witnessed first hand the abuses of power Commander Evans has delivered over his brief reign in Woodlawn. I'm not going to bore anyone with the details but I have (as well as many others in the 3rd District) witnessed first hand the abuses of power Commander Evans has delivered over his brief reign in Woodlawn. Now with a new commander at the helm, I'm relieved but only in part. With all the lawsuits and complaints against him, i'm afraid the CPD is going back to their old playbook, tossing him from district to district like a hot potato. If anyone knows his current tour-of-duty please let me know. I want to insure that his past follows him and catches up with him sooner then later.. As of yet, to the best of my research, he has been named a defendant in six different lawsuits over the course of his career.

Neighbors

A question a friend recently posted on her facebook page received a lot of interesting replies. Thought i'd post it here and see if it would have the same effect:

"Do you have a close relationship with your neighbors? Hate your neighbors? Or never look their way & ignore them ( keep to yourself & avoid all contact ) ?"

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

I can empathize with Magic. A move is easier said than done. Especially if you're looking to move out of state or country.

  • Most of my immediate neighbors have been friendly. None have been rude, the ones who arent so friendly just ignore me.

HUD/CHA Take Over of Woodlawn

With HUD/CHA now controlling 52% of all housing in Woodlawn will this community survive? Studies show when you reach 20% your community become de-invested and blighted. How long will homeowners put up with: High Crime, Zero Decent Shops, Abundance of Trash, Rude Residents.

  • Hello all, I am new to the site but I am very glad that I found it. I am VERY interested in the very same issues that concern all of you. I am a 2 flat owner which I purchased, rehabbed, and live in. My only tenants are market rate and good neighbors. I am interested in joining WHO, where can I go to obtain more info?

Who's "Kevin Bailey for 20th Ward"

I've never heard of Kevin Bailey until today, when i saw his campaign poster stapled to a boarded-up greystone up the block from me.

Just so you know, Todd, so far there's 5 of us including the incumbent. I'd tell you who the others are but I don't wanna publicize them in any way. Besides, you'll find out who we are in due time. The vast majority of the 20th Ward hasn't heard about most of us candidates. I'm finding that to be the case as I travel throughout the ward. (How many people had heard of the incumbent before he was 'appointed?') I'm trying to get my name out there, but when you're low on dough it's kinda difficult. (I wish I could afford some posters.) In the meantime, I'll have to rely on concerned citizens like you to spread word of my candidacy; you and Facebook. . .

Fiske Dog Park

In an enclosed fenced in area on the west side of what used to be Fiske Elementary School (6145 S Ingleside) there is plenty of grass to play chase/fetch on, a few huge pines that provide shade and a bag/water station.

On maintenance: I'll drop by once a week with water and bags. If there's any vandalism, let me know and i'll address it asap.

On improvements: If anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please...

On improvements: If anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please consider donating them to the 'dog park' to give them a second life.

Note: 'Fiske Dog Park' is not official in any capacity. This is simply an effort being made on behalf of the community to make good use of a neglected public space that is currently temporarily in limbo. Please be mindful of your neighbors and try to keep your dog's barking to a minimum.

Last week i was walking with Charlie past the school and noticed that the chain and padlock were gone... so today i installed a toy basket with with some balls and water with bowl. As soon as i find a container to convert into a bag dispenser i'll also attach it to the same section of fence by the gate.

Infrastructure is needed to support basic human needs for housing, water,
light, heat, transport, health care, schools and communications. It has
usually been provided and financed by the state, the public sector - until
now.

Over the past 30 years, public infrastructure has effectively been
privatised in many countries through public-private partnerships, PPPs:
decades-long contracts between private companies and the public sector.

Hospitals, schools, prisons and roads have become commodities to be bought
and sold on a global infrastructure market.

Raising the money for infrastructure now involves multiple new
institutions -- private equity, venture capital, hedge and pension funds
and private banks, each taking fees and profits along the way.

PPPs create the illusion that the private sector has stepped in because
the public sector doesn't have enough money to build new hospitals and
schools -- actually, the private sector is siphoning money out of the
projects that are paid for by those who use them: the general public.

The gap between rich and poor has widened massively over the past 30
years, within countries and between countries, particularly between those
in the global North and the global South.

Such inequality does not come about by accident or simple mismanagement.
As UK journalist and commentator Will Hutton says, inequality is best
understood as:

'a proxy for how effectively an elite has constructed institutions that
extract value from the rest of society.'
