Babysitter/nanny recommendations

Anyone have any insight into where I can find quality and dependable in-home child care? I need someone for my 2 boys (aged 4 & 1). We only need about 20 hours/week but are having problems finding someone for these hours. Advice?

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

For what it's worth, I've found excellent sitters through Sittercity.com. Our current sitter has been with us two years. We only use about 10-15 hours a week of childcare.

  • liz

I have been a nanny for 5 years and am on sitter city. I can ask my other nanny friends if anyone if looking! I just had a baby a month ago and am returning to the family I have worked for but if you need a sitter let me know ;)

  • I am currently looking for a part time Sitting job, and 20 hours a week sounds like a good match. I take care of my 6 yr old grandson from time to time, but other then that I am available.

Anyone need moving boxes?

I have several empty boxes of various sizes that are sturdy and would be good for moving. I don't want to just throw them out in the alley out back in case it rains before someone grabs them. PM me if interested. They'll be first come, first served and I will update this when they're gone.
Thanks!

  • Yes, I need moving boxes! Probably can't come to get them until after 6 pm on Friday. How can I contact you privately?

Just venting........early morning coffee in LS

I leave for work before 7, and have found it difficult to get a good cup of coffee before that time. The only coffee joint open is Starbucks......not necessarily my favorite.

Anyone have any advice?

  • HumboldtParkRes Mozart and Augusta

I would second Knockbox Cafe! They open at 6 on weekdays and you can get a large coffee for $2.50.

  • May not sound like a likely place but I go to Citgo gas station at Sacramento and Fullerton every morning for mine. It's delicious. also, try Jonny's grill.

Pit Bulls Attacked Dogs on Logan Blvd.

Our gentle greyhound has a puncture wound, or little mutt was lucky. These dogs were very aggressive, and one got loose twice, and the owners did not seem very concerned about it. Nick had to fight them off alone while the owners watched.

After the initial attack, one of the dogs managed to get loose a second time.

One pit bull was white female, about 80 pounds, hanging teats, recently had a litter; the second, sex uncertain, white with brown and black spots on her back, with some kind of doggie backpack. Owners were two white males, heavyset, scruffy goatees, very short hair, balding, in late 20's to mid 30's.

We plan on attending next CAPS meeting about this, but wanted neighbors to be on the lookout.

  • Tracey, do you walk along logan blvd? What time do you usually walk your dogs? I walk my border collie lab mix every day and have been walking on Logan blvd again since my dog was attacked almost 3 yrs ago. It would be great to have a walking companion. Let me know, thanks

FYI we have a pitbull that we found roaming the streets earlier this year. We adopted him since he's a great dog with people... but he's no saint with other dogs. No dog should be off leash in public - there is no way to gauge how they will react or how their actions might trigger another dog. Our dog flips out when other dogs bark or invade his space too quickly. We always keep our guy on a leash in public - for his safety and that of others.

Great to know there are a lot of responsible and knowledgable dog owners in the area!

Red light camera, diversy and California

Has anyone gotten a 100$ ticket here before? Turning left in the morning onto California is hard because it backs way up waiting to get on 94.

The pictures make it look like I was stopped at the line and the. Blew the red light, but it was yellow when I was in the turn lane changed to red as I was crossing the line

I want to contest not sure if I have any chance

  • Good luck trying to contest it. Your tire has to over the white line b/4 it turns yellow. I have heard that yellow lights are suppose to be 6 seconds long but Chicago has most at 4 seconds and it's a constitutional issue. It does make you slam on your brakes and stop after getting one if these ridiculous tickets. Without benefit of counsel good luck.

I beat a red light ticket I got at that very intersection a couple of years ago. Long story, but the light was red .03 seconds when I crossed. It had just snowed, and the pavement was wet. All my arguments about not wanting to hit the brakes hard and possibly skid into the intersection and the yellow light seemed "short" went nowhere.
BUT!!! I looked up various ordinances and here is what I found. Chicago Municipal code 9-102-030 says that one of the elements required on the violation is the MAKE of the car. Here's what's required by that ordinance:
    2) The notice must include:
    b) the vehicle MAKE, if available and readily discernible (this was OTHR on my notice. But by the photo, you could clearly see the make of the car.),

Most of the above is boilerplate notification and present on every notice. However, on my notice, the MAKE was listed as OTHR. In my defense I showed my vehicle registration slip that the MAKE was available from the Sec. of State, and in photo #3 of the violation, the trademark and model of my car was clearly visible and so discernible.

Let me tell you, the administrative officer was VERY surprised, and looked up the ordinance himself. Then he had to agree. I was pretty happy.

The administrative hearing officer's official finding was: the violation does not contain all the required information as set forth in the ordinance. Consequently, you are not responsible for the fine."

So get the ordinence, print it out, and CAREFULLY CHECK the variable information on your ticket, and if there is an error bring proof to show the correct information. And STOP ON THE YELLOW!

P.S. By the way, the same is true for parking tickets...the MAKE of the car is REQUIRED in EVERY CASE. If missing the ticket is invalid.

Furthermore your original comment about my support of Bruce Rauner was a personal attack. Especially considering this thread isn't even about him or the election. It's originally about the violence in the ghetto. The only reason you stuck your nose into this was because someone else saw my reply to another poster's comment declaring they wouldn't vote for Pat Quinn, saw my description as a Republican and decided to start something with me.

I posted in reply to someone who talked about the disadvantages of voting for Rauner. "Cutting off your nose to spite your face" is an expression used to describe self-destructive behaviour, it doesn't literally mean cut of your nose, etc. And, I replied to a post talking about voting for Rauner in this situation, and I said something about that subject. If you though your posting wasn't about that, then you didn't need to reply. So, why did you reply? Were you just trolling? And what is this nonsense about kleenex? You in high school or sumtin'?

Looking for an artist friendly 2 bedroom

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking for a 2 bedroom in Logan and I figured it couldn't hurt to post here in addition to the rest of our online searching and hitting the pavement looking for "for rent" signs. The rents are going up so fast but we're hoping to find something max $1200 in Logan. Cat friendly and laundry in the building would be excellent. We want to use the 2nd bedroom as an office/studio space since we're both artists. Any leads appreciated!

New businesses coming to Milwaukee between Spaulding and Kimball/Diversey?!

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

  • I was thinking baggy shorts & $175 sandals.

  • Glad to see something happening with that building!! The row of mannequin bottoms gives our 'hood character 😁 (although I will be happy to see them gone)

Looking for an Optical store

Hello everybody,
I need feedbacks on a really good spot to get new eye glasses. Am looking for a place where they will actually take time to help you look for a pair that will look great and not any pair because they are nice. I went yesterday to a place and the only help I got was that they pointed out to me the frames for women and men. I feel awful now wasting my time and money. But at least I got a copy of my prescription.

  • While the frame selection is somewhat limited, the prices and the quality are unbeatable at Costco. I have never been so perfectly fitted for eye wear as at I have there. If you need an adjustment, it is never a problem. I can't recommend them enough!

Where's the retail in Logan Square?

So - Logan Square is hot and has been for quite some time now. Everyone can agree on that - but outside of coffee shops and restaurants, and bars - where is the retail? Wicker Park has a nice mix of both retail and food. With Wicker Park increasing in price and small boutiques being driven out for larger "chain" stores - why aren't new shops opening or at least relocating up to Logan Square? It seems retail from Western all the way up to the square is lacking in general. Food Food, Coffee, Bar, with the exception of a few. Is it the economy still? Just wondering your thoughts.

Bike repair

I'm looking for a place to repair my old, gnarly bike. Who do you guys rely on?

  • Lindsey Albany Ave. resident

Comrade cycles! They have experience working on every kind of bike. It's the only place I go to get my bikes worked on. 1908 W. Chicago Ave.

  • I'll second S.T. on the West Town Bikes recommendation if you want to get to know your bike and get your hands dirty. If not, I've had the best luck with Smart Bike Parts on Armitage. They do a great job at a reasonable price and are respectful of all types of bikers. I've also heard them flat out tell people that the junker they brought in isn't worth the cost of repairing and then explain why, except as a real stop-gap measure.

Landscape boulder delivery?

I haven't used them, but I've seen some large stones (above liftable weight for a person) at a landscaping materials place on Lake lakestreetsupply.com Not sure if they work directly with the public/deliver, etc. Sorry, but I hope that helps.

Problem with newspapers and ads on porch

Our building, a 6 flat at Campbell and Palmer, has a huge issue with unwanted circulars, newspapers, and ads being delivered to our porch daily. There are 7 copies of some of these dropped every single day. We're a rental building so ownership of the porch is tricky, though my husband and I try our best to clean it off when we can. Does anyone know what we can do to stop this wasteful madness? It's such a waste of everyone's time and I hate to think of all that discarded paper.

Loud, cannon-like noise around Mozart & Altgeld shot off Sunday evening

The last few years I've experienced a neighbor shooting off what sounds like a cannon (I could be wrong since I'm not a firearms person) on random dates/time when the temps are warmer. Do any of my fellow neighbors have any idea who this jerk is? It's very disruptive and sounds like we live in a war zone. Would love to rid this annoyance of the neighborhood but have no idea where exactly it's shot from.

I prepare myself the onslaught of fireworks in summer leading up to and around the holidays, but pretty much all summer. It's at the level where I really don't want to leave my house on July 4th for fear of it burning down.
To be honest, I don't really mind too much if it's just loud noise here and there and I like that people can have fun, and we can be a little less uptight and vanilla about our festivities.
Obviously call the cops if there's a real danger or 911 for fire. But I will say that the biggest 4th fireworks display actually takes place at the home of my neighbor who is a Chicago police officer. I don't think there is much anyone is going to do about it. One year a firework must have gone off in our backyard because it chipped the siding on our garage. I've also heard a firework so big, maybe a 1/4 stick, that it woke me from a dead sleep at 4am and knocked pictures off our wall. And last year someone blew up a trash can on our alley. It can get a little out of hand at times. All in good fun.

  • I don't agree that blowing up 1/4 sticks, salutes or similar is good fun for anyone except maybe the person doing it.

Usually PBS' web site offers both the re-airing schedule (very rare it only plays a single time -- especially since, with digital antennae, there are four WTTW-channels in Chicago) and often offers re-broadcasts. Fioretti's speech

Encouraging words of support for the needs of citizens.

“…For example, Chicago has thousands of struggling individuals with mental illness, many are poor. They don’t have good health insurance. They rely on public clinics to survive. To close their mental health clinics where they see their psychologists and social workers. Where they monitor their medication was inexcusable. […] Again this was a choice.”

The thing I appreciate most about Fioretti’s speech is that he says public policy cannot be based only on claims of “savings.”

For example, the “savings of 2 million” for closing the mental health facilities is completely wiped out if only 29 mentally ill individuals - who otherwise could have been kept out of jail through preventative care - are incarcerated over the next year (based on $190 a day in costs (http://tinyurl.com/ptp6qb2)). Not to mention the costs of supporting the now unemployed clinic workers and the lost revenue their salaries meant to their communities.

Not only should we be morally outraged at this treatment of the most downtrodden in our society. We should be offended that “savings” (real or imagined) can be the justification. Even if the City does save 2 million dollars by closing half our mental health facilities. Should that be something we view as a success?

Obviously, public policy is a balancing act and cost must be a factor. But if we’re willing to throw the mentally ill out into the street to save a buck…what aren’t we willing to do?

So,,,,30 Shootings in Chicago since Friday night? Hmmmmmm.......

Weather getting warmer, innocent people in the crossfire, concealed carry laws,,,,Seems to me we should have beat cops on patrol...

  • warmer weather crime increases - we need police presence and graffiti reported and removed - each of us should be able to walk in our neighborhood feeling safe.

  • Emilie 5-year West Bucktowner

It's also a big help to keep the front and back of your place looking cared for. It seems small, but picking up trash and making it obvious that you regularly use and care for your outdoor space makes your presence felt to everyone in the neighborhood. It can actually reduce several types of crime.

I have trust issues with mechanics and they have been my go-to since I moved to the neighborhood because they have never done me wrong!

A whole A-hole

I watched what looked like a very burly female get out of a small grey vehicle ILL Plate # R18-1123 about 5:30 pm Mon & toss an armful of garbage into the Chicago River behind the Diversey Bowl which has cameras but I`m not sure what it may have caught. It seems like a ritual for this individual, ie there is a serious pile going on at this spot. Please tell me some options to report this knucklehead There are several dumpsters nearby. Thanks

Feral Cat Colony Caregiver Substitute Needed for Wednesday 4/16 and Friday 4/18

Hi Folks. I manage several feral cat colonies in the area (all TNR'd), but will be out of town next week. My usual substitute for one colony is incapacitated. For only two days, I need someone to stop by Sawyer and George to simply fill food (I'll provide the food) and water bowls (you bring a jug full). It's quick and easy, but very meaningful. Please let me know if you can help. We can set up a time to meet over there to walk it through. Thanks!

We used to have a "Cat Lady" on the block. Dozens of cats every where. Wish we knew about trap and release then. When she moved she took most of her cats with her. Our rat problem has exploded ever since. No amount of baiting cures the problem.
Bring back the "Cat Lady". Rather have stray cats than rats, so thank you for keeping a healthy catch and release program going.

I am a court reporter by trade, now, but I used to work for several veterinarians, including the Clyborn Vet Emergency, and I had my own pet sitting business for quite a few years. If anyone gets in a situation where they need a pet sitter, give me a call. I'm not asking for money, I just know what it's like to try to find quality pet care and I'd be happy to help with the cat colony as well. I helped maintain one in the past, so, contact me if any of you ever has a need.

Electronic Billboards

Hi All-- Another electronic billboard went up this week at Armitage and Milwaukee. Everywhere they go up they dominate the intersection and make it look like a prison yard. The big ones on the highway wash out everything...Has this been an issue for anyone else? Is there a way to prevent the Las Vegas-ization of Chicago? At the least I'd like to see some kind of brightness limits on them. Has anyone started a campaign? Is it all futile?

Thanks
Will

Yes, Angel! I went to cozy once and the food and atmosphere was good, but they rushed me out before even finishing the last few bites! I guess this is why they want to expand...

The location for the new cali milwaukee food isn't quite under the train anymore, but still in the middle of a stretch of Milwaukee ave that is a bit of a food desert. The parking lot is great there and its still a good area that people can walk to at night without being in a shady area. Also, it kinda splits the difference between the western and Cali stops, so maybe people who get off at western will start to frequent it now?

  • Did the sign give any specifics as to when?

Stop the honking. How to deal?

My family recently moved to a single-family home in Logan Square and can't believe how many people honk their horns when picking up passengers AND at all hours of the night and wee-hours in the morning. After dealing with this for a year, having countless sleepless nights and our newborn baby being woken up, we are now outraged and need it to stop. I'm just stunned by this ignorant behaviour.

Does anyone have any advise in dealing with this issue?

  • Thanks for everyone's advice and comments. We've lived in the city a long time and in various neighborhoods, but this is definitely a new experience for us. We'll try speaking to a few individuals on the block and see if that helps. Happy Spring!

Living in the city is not an excuse to be rude. I've been here over 20 years and our block goes through noise cycles. Often new tenants with different habits. Honestly, I believe that some people just don't get that the noise from their horn doesn't just target the person they are trying to communicate with.

First, try to reach out to the neighbor who the horn honker is trying to get out of the house at 4am. Be courteous and neighborly. In person and/or a nice note requesting change in behavior. Give possible solutions.

No luck with that tactic. Prepare to talk to the horn honker. 4am. Put your best smile on no matter how pissed off that you are. Wear your biggest bunny slippers, fluffy robe and let your hair be as disheveled as possible. Yawn and stretch when you come outside. Tap on the window of drivers car if he/she doesn't seem threatening. Ask which door he/she would like you to knock on to help get the person out for them. Ask if the per on in the car has a cellphone. Typically the person does. Request kindly that the person uses that instead of the car horn.

Believe it or not this tactic works. Often times people just don't realize their behavior is causing others disruption.

Many neighbors have thanked me later in the day after doing this. Turns out I wasn't the only grumbling by the window looking out at the horn honker.

Do not go out yelling and screaming. This will only create a horn honking war.
If the person continues after you've tried all of the above then reach out to other neighbors and see if others are finding this annoying. Coordinate efforts. If everyone calls the police at the same time and same days they are much more likely to respond. Try to have the car's plate number for the call.

    Good Luck !
