I was coming home on the bus and they re-routed it at Michigan and 24th. A man and I decided to get off and walk the rest of the way to 26th St. There were police who were blocking the street. I figured all I needed to do is show my driver's license and they'd see where I lived and let me through. After all, the police notified our building to keep an i.d. on us for the duration of the NATO conference. I told the cop that I live in South Commons. He said "Sorry, we can't let you through." I asked why. He replied "You don't wanna know." Another officer said at the same time "They've found a bomb in a car." He pointed about a block down.So the Chinese man (who's visiting from China and been here about a week visiting relatives) followed me to Wabash, where we then walked South. We walked till we got near I-55 and came to a border of security fences. I didn't know if we tried to walked along the fence, we could get through to Michigan Avenue. I saw some police driving slowly past on the other side of the fence. I flagged them down. I asked if we could get through if we walk along the side of the fence to Michigan Ave. They said yes. We squeezed through the area and came out on Michigan Ave. at the I-55 bridge. We saw cop cars blocking access to the bridge from 26th St. When the man and I got to 26th St. they didn’t question us. I don’t know if the info on the bomb has been on the news yet, but we were re-routed at about 6:45 pm.

My boyfriend and I stopped by Swagger last night after driving past it and seeing its lights on. Can I say that this place has ALL of the bells and whistles of a top of the line lounge. I don't even think my description would do the place justice! But it has a full service kitchen, a bar both upstairs and on the first floor, two outdoor padded seating areas with colorful lighting, an outdoor stage for performances, an outdoor fountain, a TON of flat screen tvs, dining area, a room for jazz performances, a Playstation section, beautifully decorated his and hers restrooms on both floors, lounge rooms on both floors, plenty of security on hand, and a friendly, accomodating wait staff. We met with Kara and she gaves the complete tour. I have been screaming about solid businesses and nightlife coming to Bronzeville for a while and Swagger has surely helped to fill the gap. They are currently open on Thursdays through Sundays and stay open as late as 2AM. As the word gets out, they plan to add more days to be open during the week. The menu consists mostly of bar food, and the menu is light, but it's still a great selection and the lounge plans to expand the options as popularity grows. Oh, and there is also plenty of free parking, so that is always a plus! OH...what a breath of fresh air for Bronzeville and the south side of Chicago! Please support this business soon!

Hello,
I am looking to start/am in the process of starting a new non-profit organization that will, to begin with, be focused on the Bronzeville area. The organization will, in short, aim to restore the musical culture that was once quite prevalent in the area. The organization, called "Project: Experience Music", will predominantly focus on providing free music lessons to the youth of the area, as well as establishing a venue which will serve to create musical interest and attract other artists to the area.
I was wondering how the people of the community feel about this endeavor, as this organization will greatly depend on the support of the community's members. Do you have any suggestions? Thoughts? Ways in which we can further reach-out to the community? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
I was made aware of the Bronzeville Job Fair that will be taking place tomorrow through EveryBlock and I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide more information on it. I know the time and location, but there was no information regarding the recruiting representatives. I would very much like to research the companies before I attend the job fair, so any information would be greatly appreciated.
More generally, does anyone know of any available positions in the Bronzeville area at all? As I recently started a non-profit here (See: http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/apr24-music-non-profit-organization-bronzeville-4925657/), I would really like to stay in the area, but with the job market being as it is, I am forced to look outside of the Bronzeville area, as well. To be honest, I am not above any type of work, so long as it is able to sufficiently provide enough income to survive. So, if anyone knows of anyone hiring - for anything - in the area, I would really appreciate some direction.
Thank you!

I think the popcorn shop folks are hoping to cash in on people leaving US Cellular and/or going to the new harbor.

What gives? I saw about 6 Bronzeville Military Aca students lingering on one of the blocks off of 35th st today around 5pm. I agree T.W. but unfortunately the most likely reconfig will be to weigh more heavily on the CHA side of things. The CHA CEO is only repeating the arguement we had against building these in the first place. No market rate renter/buyer in their right minds will go into this arrangement without being tricked into it. Not even students will be trusting enough to live in this experiment.
So we are left with a highly unstable policy manned by policymakers who will eventually stop answering the phone when all hell breaks loose. What a clumsy stunt to suddenly invent the flexibility to renege on housing composition when suits them or sits remotely near affluent area's (Old Town/Near North,Gold Coast). This is such a dishonest way to further provide a now legal do-over to reduce low income and affordable portions down to nothing when you fear middle class outrage.
I will be willing to bet our planned housing will be heavily loaded the opposite way (all low income). If it's not, I would be happy to stand corrected:)

31st Street marina is a great new public place, but bike/walk access still awkward
I completely agree with Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin's description of those colored trees: "garishly painted recycled trees that goes overboard in an attempt to create a festive atmosphere". I would prefer to see them removed and real trees take their place. I was saddened to see mature-growth trees being removed during construction. I appreciate a lot of the new features the marina brings to Burnham Park, like the upgraded playground, a small park on the pier and a bike trail that should bypass a lot of beachgoer traffic.
Read more about the new marina, with lots of photos on my blog, Steven Can Plan:

Anne Beverly resident and cyclistI think the painted trees are a sick, colorfully stupid joke. I'd much rather see real trees in their place. I haven't had a chance to fully explore the reconfigured area. I do like the new underpass for the main path. Removing that conflict with car traffic in and out of the marina area was a smart move.
-
Wendell in Bronzeville Bronzeville Resident - Avid CyclistAndi J, you are so right about the possible flooding. With just the slight rains we have experienced lately the interior of the underpass is always wet.
I guess we will have to wait until they remove the detour and open
the entire path in that spot but presently you have to turn into oncoming riders/runners to exit the path at 31st street if headed
south.

If you are a neighbor you know we have been fighting to close liquore stores that are near schools. When Mr. Leatherwoods died several years ago we were told that the liquor license could not be transfered. I can't believe Alderman Dowell would let a new store open.
Will anyone shed some light on this for me?

The negative traffic knocks on doors of residents and this is making them scared. It doen't matter if they were looking for someone else. If thugs or squatter's kept knocking on your door, how would you feel??
The neighbor said Leon Finney of the Woodlawn Organization manages this building and theri contract is up for renewal this summer.
The neigbor also began to also share how her quality of life has changed at this CHA Building. She did share that under the previous management, the building felt safe but not any more and now the seniors are frightened about what is happening!
She said they are unable to report the concerns to management because they are the one's allowing the safety at this location to become compromised.
I suppose the this building does not screen it's residents right. Could this account for the robberies and drive ups in cars??

I let them choose whatever 2-hour window they wanted the previous day, and they didn't have the courtesy to show up in the time of their choosing or to let me know they'd be late until 5 minutes before I had waited for 2 hours.
While that sucks, it doesn't suck as much as a locksmith not showing up or calling at all, like Mega Locksmith did. I made an appointment yesterday with them for today, 12/31 between 9 and 10 a.m. Yes, I live on the South Side (on Lake Park in an affluent area) but why should that mean that we can't get any services at all?
The locksmith never showed up, and it is now 12:30 p.m. I got no call saying that they would be late or that they couldn't or wouldn't come. I am sick and tired of businesses not serving the South Side with any professionalism whatsoever. If they had at least called before the time passed for the appointment I would have given them some credit for professionalism which ChiTown Locksmith (barely) had a little of.
I called Ashland locksmith and made an appointment for next Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. - we'll see if they show at all. What they said was troubling though - 'we only have one tech and we can't send him to the South Side today - we have to keep them here for business on the North Side. So North Side business is 'better'?
I'm considering cancelling them as well and going through the rest of the phone book until I find one business willing to come to the South Side and do business professionally and without comments like that.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for locksmiths (that come out and fix/change locks) on the South Side?

Really?? that's your best attempt at exchanging pleasantries with the customer?? It made forking over $150 all the more annoying. I would much rather give a company such as Curtis the business next time.

I'm sorry Quee If you feel that we did not provide a good level of service to you because we called and tried to extend our two hour window because we were running behind. In this business from time to time we run late because we never know if some previous jobs might take more time than expected therefore we try to give a big enough window but in a city like Chicago you never know if traffic or weather might slow you down. I assure you that we do service everywhere with the utmost regard in great customer service and we service North, South, East, and West Side even the suburbs with the best way that we can. Again I apologize for not satisfying you Quee but if we didn't make it on time wasn't because you're from the south side. I would like to let you know by the way that Chitown Locksmith is a family owned and operated company and we are also minority owned. Chitown Locksmith strives to satisfy all of our customers and potential customers.

Trash
Today, as I was walking home traveling east on 43rd after exiting the El, I was so shocked to see that lot next to the store -- FULL of trash and so soon after the Blitz. It was disheartening and now I'm thinking about ways to improve it. Trash cans, signage, fines for littering, weekly Saturday AM clean-ups…
What do you think?

Thanks Ruby. One more thing that can be done is also teach our youngsters to put trashes in the trash bin in their vicinities. If they don't see one in their area keep it until they find one. Right now what I observe is that they just throw things no matter where they are. Teaching, guiding and educating will ensure cleaner area. Picking up trashes after people will probably encourage them to be more careless about their environment. Something community organizers should think about. Thanks.

The absentee property owners and slumlords are just to blame as anyone. Alderman Dowell is fighting for an ordinance now that would hold owners and banks responsible for vacant properties.

Wendell in Bronzeville Bronzeville Resident - Avid CyclistI contacted the host committee to request a meeting closer to the near south communities effected.
It is only common courtesy to hold a meeting for Bronzeville residents in the shadow of McCormick Place, similar to the meeting held in the South Loop conveniently located near the spot closest to the activity. (There are two major apartment complexes and condo's several blocks south of McCormick place)

Alderman Will Burns Statement: Urban Institute's Report on Public Housing Transformation and Crime

The recently published Urban Institute report on the impact of CHA relocatees on crime rates has stoked tension in communities between CHA and non-CHA residents.
The report is very nuanced. The topline summary provided by the media has served to only confirm the worst fears of middle class residents of communities with CHA relocatees.
While media attention has been focused on the impact of CHA relocatees on crime rates, some points must be made. First, crime rates dropped across Chicago in the 2000s. Second, the amount of the reduction in crime in communities with CHA relocatees is related to the concentration of CHA relocatees. Communities with low numbers of relocatees experienced a larger reduction in crime rates than communities with high numbers of CHA relocatees.
More importantly, the report demonstrates that communities that converted traditional public housing to mixed income transformation sites experienced significant reductions in crime rates. For many years the Fourth Ward has had traditional public housing projects such as Washington Park, Ida B. Wells, Madden, Darrow, and Lake Michigan Homes. The CHA transformation plan has converted traditional public housing into mixed income developments.
Mixed income housing disaggregates toxic concentrations of poverty, increases the median income of neighborhoods, grows population density, and spurs retail development.
Current and future mixed income housing developments in the Fourth Ward require drug testing for all residents, regardless of income, and prospective tenants submit to a rigorous selection process.
Finally, I have made it clear to CHA in public and private meetings that lease provisions must be enforced and that CHA residents who fail to comply with their leases must be evicted.

Wendell in Bronzeville: You might have opened Pandora's box by drawing attention to a Monday April 30, 2012 Chicago Sun-times THE WATCHDOGS story.
This under exposed feature story, is about a clout connected real estate development corporation, that has traditionally over billed city, state and the federal government for multiple millions of tax payer dollars.
These funds were extorted by the developer while building so-called affordable mixed income housing development projects in Bronzeville, like Lake Park Crescent apartments, at 1061 E. 41st Street, South Park Plaza apartments, at 26th and King Drive. Park Boulevard, 3506 South State Street, Pershing Courts apartments, 39th and State and Chicago View Terrace apartments, 4801 S. Cottage Grove.
This story reflects the inherent culture of corruption that has historically abused the tax payers of Chicago, for the benefit of a clouted and selected group of individuals who traditionally have controlled this city.
Selected people in Chicago, have gotten wealthy from the failed and delinquent Chicago Housing Authority "Plan for Transformation".
Stop blaming lower income public housing residents for the inflated real estate market that has effectively exploited and disenfranchised the so-called Black middles class in Bronzeville, and every body else who pays taxes in this corrupt city.

Alderman Burns' Statement on the Ethics Task Force Report
Today the Mayor's Ethics Task Force released its first report with recommendations on how to improve Chicago's ethics ordinance and the enforcement of the City's ethics policies.
The Task Force, attorneys, and consultants spent countless hours reviewing best practices from other cities and states and benchmarking Chicago's ordinance against those practices. Key leaders in this field including inspectors general, ethics commissions members, and reform advocates provided important insight on ethics policy.

Key leaders in this field including inspectors general, ethics commissions members, and reform advocates provided important insight on ethics policy.
I believe that this report strikes the right balance. The Task Force recognized that most employees and officials want to do the right thing. Here are some the highlights of the Task Force's first report. The report:
• calls on the Mayor's office and the Board of Ethics to revise its ethics guidance materials;
• recommends lowering the amount of gifts allowed from $100 to $50 for City employees and officials;
• urges pre-clearance by the executive director of the Board of Ethics for trips and educational missions taken by City employees and officials;
• offers cleanup language for conflicts of interest that make it simpler for employees and officials to understand;
• recommends disclosure of additional information on financial interest statements;
• encourages the City to incorporate the State's ban on prohibited political activities into the Ethics Ordinance.
The Task Force will continue to work on other issues related to the Ethics Ordinance and plans to introduce a second report in late July of this year.
