Coyote Sighting?

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of the coyote (?) running down Clybourn Ave this morning around 7:45 AM?

I was driving to work, heading South on Clybourn, and had just crossed over Ashland when I saw, what I thought was a coyote sprinting full-speed in the opposite direction. It was running on the sidewalk straight towards the busy Ashland / Fullerton / Clybourn intersection. As a dog owner, this has me concerned. Any other sightings?

  • My kids and I trailed one for a few blocks around Wells and Goethe last Thursday. It got chased by a German Shepard in the Franklin Fine Arts playlot on Wells and disappeared into the night. I called 311, but there is no way the response time of the animal control unit is fast enough to catch a coyote on the run.

Yes, I've seen it many times on Clybourn and in the alley behind our house on Maud....hunting for rats.

Dog attacked at Trebes Park

My dog was looking for a place to urinate at the corner of Webster and Clifton, when suddenly a guy walked up to her with his dog without asking. His dog is approx. 40-50 lbs. and looks like an Australian shepherd - border collie mix. The dogs were sniffing each other and out of nowhere his dog grabbed onto my dog's back and shook her back and forth like she was a piece of meat (she's a beagle and weighs 22 lbs). Initially I didn't see any blood and the guy left. However she was clearly in pain when we got inside and that's when I saw she had giant puncture wounds in her back and needed to go to the emergency vet. Please keep your eye out for this dog. It looks like an Australian shepherd - border collie mix. I wish he knew the pain and suffering he has caused my dog.

  • The owner was probably in his late 20's/early 30's, light brownish blonde hair, thin build, and on the taller side... I think the dog might have been older. I hope that helps? The dog looked just like this one http://imgur.com/XzBTsK0

March's Final Police Blotter, by Mark Schipper (April's Blotters to come)

A 10-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were walking to school on the 1700 block of N. Larrabee St. when a gray sedan pulled alongside them. The driver had rolled down a window and said, "Come over here."

Two other homes were damaged on the 2100 block of N. Fremont St. and the 800 block of W. Armitage Ave. between March 14-and-16.

This article has 13 other Chicago locations (Show)

The 20-year-old victim was attacked about 11:40 p.m. near the corner of N. Kenmore and W. Hollywood avenues. He said a man in his middle or late 40s had confronted him and claimed he had never returned a cell-phone that belonged to him, the attacker.

A mother of one of the boys accompanied them about 7:20 p.m. to 20th District police headquarters, 5400 N. Lincoln, to make the report.

The boys said they were shoved from behind while riding through an alley just south of 5600 N. Lincoln Ave. Each of their cell-phones fell out of their pockets when they hit the ground.

A woman was robbed March 17 stepping off a CTA bus near 4800 N. Broadway, CPD reported.

Michael Tingling of the 7100 block of N. Ridge Blvd. was pronounced dead of a heart attack March 19 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

Tingling, 59, passed away about 2:45 p.m., less than 45 minutes after he'd been in a fist fight with a stranger on the 7100 block of N. Clark St.

That stranger turned out to be 59-year-old Joseph Firek of the 7000 block of N. Clark St. He was identified by multiple eye-witnesses as the second man in the fight. Firek, who is white, has been charged with First Degree Murder and a Hate Crime.

The 19-year-old had been attacked on the 1200 block of W. Albion Ave. about 8:20 p.m., according to CPD. He told officers he had heard fast footsteps coming from behind just before a man grabbed hold of him and his backpack.

The victim had been on the 2700 block of W. Lunt Ave. when he was surrounded. The first man approached him from the front while the second and third came from behind, he said.

The victim, 32, said she had returned about 9:30 p.m. to her apartment building on the 2400 block of W. Fitch Ave. She had seen two men standing near the back door.

The boys were walking on the 2900 block of W. Cortland Ave. when they encountered a middle-aged black male. He had pointed to a white van parked on the street and asked if they wanted to get inside.

A third home on the 2100 block of Sheffield was broken into the afternoon of March 17.

Two other homes were damaged on the 2100 block of N. Fremont St. and the 800 block of W. Armitage Ave. between March 14-and-16.

Oz Park Toilets

Dear Aldermistress Smith: More than hundreds of people in Oz Park this beautiful Friday afternoon having a wonderful spring outing. Some of us looked for places to eliminate only to find bushes to squat in that were next to the children's playgrounds. Won't you please plant some scrubs away from children area or ask the city to provide some portable toilets??

  • oz neighbor 32 years in LP

Please thank the Park district for the porta pottis. They put them in the Park every spring in time for the kids baseball season.
Ms Smith had nothing to do with this, the Park supervisor got them put in. Oh I forgot, one more thing for Smith to take credit for that she didn't do!

  • O V

I apologize in advance if the post was meant to be funny to bring attention to the fact there need to be porter potties in the park to eliminate the 'bush squatting'. It's just that being a resident of this wonderful city and seeing people 'eliminate' themselves anywhere they please (including a playground across the street from my house), it wouldn't surprise me if you were serious about it.

A Worthy Cause

Saving the Black Duck and preserving the historic Halsted Willow Gateway to the Sheffield Historic District is a worthy cause. DNA's article on the the history of Chicago Magic and the Black Duck exemplifies the many hidden gems that are often lost. Thanks DNA.

Anyone remember when RJ Grunts on the Park was going to close?
Lines down the block made Melman keep it open ...now it's going strong

Landlords, Building Owners & Property Managers

I collect abandoned and broken down bicycles from apartment buildings around the city. Many building owners/managers have had abandoned bikes in their bike rooms for quite a while with few options to remove or discard them. What I do is pick up these abandoned bikes free of charge and either fix them or donate them to charity. If you manage properties in the area and want to get rid of your abandoned bikes please contact me and we can arrange for pick up. Similarly, if you are not a property manager and simply have an old bike that you don't want, please let me know. Thanks!

  • aer312 - I do sell them but don't have an inventory quite. I'm just getting started for the season. I'll contact you when I have a few ready.

  • The building at 312-944-1055 is cleaning their bike room. You may want to call the property manager and offer your services.
