An older woman recently moved in around the block. She yells at anyone whose dog uses the bathroom on the lawn area that borders the street and sidewalk, which is outside her window. I understand that this is not her property, the city owns it. Recently she was outside following me and pouring bleach all over the grass. My husband has seen her sprinkling what we hope is only red pepper. None of this has stopped the dogs from using the bathroom on this stretch of grass. All of us dog owners are getting fed up with her harassment and we are worried she is going to start putting poison on the grass. We don't know if we should call the police or what to do. Has anyone been in this situation? Any advice?

  • Nick Lincoln Park resident since 1998

@sarah, dumpsters in full compliance with the law will still attract rats. Additionally, the streets and sanitation quote does not state that dogs are "mostly" responsible for the city's rat population at large.

I agree with you that there are irresponsible dog owners out there. But not all dog owners are irresponsible. Regardless, you've made it clear you believe there are "way too many dogs". Sorry you feel that way, I'm just not sure what we can do for you here.

  • Can dog walkers read? The "curb your dog" signs mean that your dog needs to urinate and defecate in the street next to the CURB. Then no grass or flowers are killed, the rain washes away the urine traces into the gutter, and people only have to look in one...

Can dog walkers read? The "curb your dog" signs mean that your dog needs to urinate and defecate in the street next to the CURB. Then no grass or flowers are killed, the rain washes away the urine traces into the gutter, and people only have to look in one place to avoid stepping in the dog feces you have not picked up-as you should. This is common practice in Europe, so I do not believe it is cruel to the dogs. People who want to maintain their plants help us all as plants take in carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, which helps the environment. People who pollute others property, either themselves or with their dogs are rude and unneighborly.

What's the building west of City Farm on Division?

Does anyone know what the new building is that is almost completed at about 450 West Division? This is the building just west of the City Farm.

It’s all windows on the east side suggesting residential; it’s all cinder block on the west side suggesting prison. There are three very large garage doors. But the real oddity are the huge balconies that are on the north end facing into nearby buildings – as opposed to being on the south end looking out onto downtown.

If it is really residential let’s hope the buyers are told that the City Farm announced years ago that their end was near for that specific spot because developers were making building plans.

  • Jon Hiatt, RA LEED GA Architect in Old Town

The building in reference is a 8 Unit Multi-Family residence with 8 garage spots for parking. The most likely reason behind the near blank CMU wall on the west side is because the architect or developer are assuming a building will be built beside it in the near future. The...

The most likely reason behind the near blank CMU wall on the west side is because the architect or developer are assuming a building will be built beside it in the near future. The east side has a street adjacent to it, which will at least provide views to the street even after the proposed building at city farm is constructed; the higher units still may have a view of the skyline after city farm is replaced.

Thanks. It is still a mystery why the balconies went on the end that absolutely do look into buildings while the north end looks out onto a wide street.

That building is a mess -- I live across the street and I've been watching the construction process. It's been slow and the building is showing a lot of signs of sloppy construction. At one point in the spring, a pile of newly-laid cinder blocks from the roof was blown by strong winds off the roof onto Division St. A few weeks ago I saw a Cease Construction notice put up on the building because the contractor's license had expired. I'm not sure what's going on behind the scenes with that building, but it doesn't look hopeful. Even if it gets finished, the building looks like it's going to be pretty ugly.

Lola Bastille tonight at Laudi Vidni

I organize a little reception for my friend Elisabeth Berthon, a French designer who will present her brand Lola Bastille for the first time in the US.
A one-of-a-kind opportunity to discover high-end artisanal felt and shop her exclusive handmade line for women, men and girls. A distinctive and unique style, seamless elegant and comfortable clothes which highlight color blending and natural fibers.
Laudi Vidni, the custom leather handbags design studio is generously hosting the event and it's another good reason to come and check their gorgeous bags and leather samples.

  • After a very nice reception yesterday my friend's creations will stay on display at Laudi Vidni during the weekend. She is herself on site today, which is a real bonus because she can tell you all about the materials and different type of wool and techniques she used for each...

After a very nice reception yesterday my friend's creations will stay on display at Laudi Vidni during the weekend. She is herself on site today, which is a real bonus because she can tell you all about the materials and different type of wool and techniques she used for each piece.

I already loved her work from the pictures and a couple of clothes I had seen on her in the past. After yesterday's experience, hearing such a positive feedback from our guests, trying on some clothes myself, seeing how beautiful they all looked on people so different by size, style, age, gender, etc., I can truly say today that it is a must-see. Unique, artistic, beautiful, but also easy to wear, warm and comfy!

In addition to that, Laudi Vidni staff who welcomed us is so sweet and their custom leather handbags are beautiful too, so stop by this weekend, have a mimosa and enjoy!

I was so happy with my experience at Essa Dora I've booked all of my appointments with them for the next year.

Best Auto Repair Shop

I just wanted to let everyone know how much I like my auto repair place. Yes, that's right, a compliment, not a complaint. I started visiting Accurate Imports about 20 years ago. Rudy and Robert, two German guys, ran the place at Lincoln and Wrightwood. Several years ago when R&R retired, the workers, Oscar and his team, took over the business. It's now at 4329 W. Addison, a bit beyond Lincoln Park but well worth the drive. They do excellent work, are incredibly honest and have reasonable rates. Today I needed them to pull a screw out of my tire, insert a plug and add air. Total bill - $0.00!! I love these guys.

  • Bob

Did they place a "plug" through the tire or did they glue a "patch" over the hole from the inside? The proper repair would have been a patch. If they put in a plug, they damaged your tire. A patch would be safer.

RCN v Comcast

Empty nesters for over a year...guess the kids are really "off the books" so we are moving from the suburbs to Old Town! My wife and I both work from home, so dependable internet is important as is a good HD cable TV service.

Comments/Recommendations?

Thanks!

You can do that on RCN if you have their Tivo t6 / q and buy the Tivo Stream to add on. That's $129 https://www.amazon.com/TiVo-TCDA94000-Stream/dp/B008RWHC0E/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=x00a-20 -- then you can stream to ios/android/etc.

My second Tivo is actually their Tivo Mini, which is what RCN gives you as the second for second/etc. TVs. They use an ethernet cable to connect to your main Tivo. It will also use MoCa which is basically putting your ethernet network over the RCN cable lines, so you could then use either an RCN coax cable (which, is only being used for ethernet/moca), or an actual ethernet cable. Those are the supported modes. However, people have been able to successfully use a wireless bridge w/ it and it's not necessarily a supported configuration, but apparnetly works well enough to satisfy. You can get a wireless router that supports bridge mode to connect to your main router, or the more common solution would be an actual wireless to wire LAN bridge. probably $30-50 for the cheapest options. You could also use an ethernet over powerline adapter which puts your local ethernet network over your houses' AC power. I've used one in an apartment in the past and it worked OK, probably would be OK for this purpose.

Comcasts' competitor is the X2 but they only sell you that if you bundle all 3 services cable TV+phone+internet, and I think also it doesn't allow "live" streaming it's a pre-recorded item from DVR -- I don't know how it handles shows that are actively recording, though.

With or without the DVR streaming option, you could also use the standard TV Everywhere apps w/ either Comcast or RCN... These would be available from the individual cable channel operator. For example, download the CNN Go app and sign in using your RCN or Comcast credentials, and you have live streaming CNN on your ipad or whatever else.

Exterminator Needed

We are having an ant problem. Can anyone recommend a good exterminator?

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

If it's the small, "sugar" ants, sprinkle cinnamon.

  • Had a problem a few years back, get the Terro Bait trays, put one out and when they swarm it put out second then third. Pet safe and it keeps them from wandering around. They take bait back to nest and kills Queen, end of them.

Kids throwing Eggs from Building

Two kids have been throwing eggs on to cabs from the roof of 161 W. Schiller on weekends. The building was owned by a formerly convicted felon until it was foreclosed on last month. I think there may be squatters in the building - a lot of unsavory characters.

  • Kim 25 year Northside resident. Area volunteer.

    Please call the police.

  • SNLombardi 25 Year resident Old Town

We did, so did one of the cab drivers - no one came. The manager of the restaurant next door was going to speak to 2 officers that were there dining - don't know if anything happened. Be careful driving on Schiller between LaSalle and Wells.

Bars?

No, not the places to find a good vodka martooni...the window kind :) We are moving to Old Town in a few weeks and some of the windows on our building have exterior bars and some don't.

What is the current best practice? It seems that bars are a liability if there is a fire, but would make it harder for someone to break in and swipe a couch.

  • I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "best practice," but in my experience living near Evergreen Terrace apartments, my landlord has bars around the windows of the bottom floor apartment, but not the upper level apartments, for obvious access reasons.

Skylight leaking-HELP!!

This rain is killing us. One of our skylights started leaking. Anyone know a roofer or a window guy who can come to our rescue? As long as it a light rain we are OK, but this down pour is awful for the leak

  • This could be an issue with the flashing around the skylight- a roofer may quickly fix

Boom

Anybody else hear that loud boom around 4am this morning (10/11)? It didn't sound like gunfire or fireworks, just one loud bang. Hard to tell where it came from (maybe south, near Division & Wells?), and no sirens followed.

  • Stanky A Live in the area

No news story about the fire cracker

  • DAS

    From CPD zone 4 radio
Most of the patrols in the 18th heard the noise.
They had calls in from Armitage down to Ontario
They were looking for a blown transformer or a gas explosion. Some units did bring up the fireworks problem in the area but thought this one was too loud. Maybe they have some new firepower.
