Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

  • Not to quibble over details, but the Coyote building (Northwest Tower) was office space as was the Hairpin Lofts, not residential. And regarding population density, the average size of a household in 1930 was 4.01 and in 2000 it was 2.59. That's a 35 percent decrease which matches up exactly...

And regarding population density, the average size of a household in 1930 was 4.01 and in 2000 it was 2.59. That's a 35 percent decrease which matches up exactly against the lost numbers of people. As adults consume more resources than children (water, food, space, car ownership, etc.) I would say that the net effect is not that we're particularly less dense than we were, just that there are fewer children.

Per city studies, Logan Square is already among the city's densest neighborhoods with among its lowest amount of green space per capita.

I am generally skeptical of these projects as they're seemingly approved without any thought to a coherent plan to guide development.

I have said it before and I will say it again, the key word to understand here is precedent.

If you approve 10+ story buildings here, understand that this lays a legal foundation for future property owners and developers to insist on the equivalent.

I would love more density on Milwaukee if it is ushered in more holistically. TOD is a bit too vague for my sensibilities, at least as it exists now. I would like to see some evidence that less parking and proximity to rapid transit actually results in less car ownership.

I live a block from the Belmont blue line stop and I only see a fraction of my neighbors walking to the train, and I grew up near the Belmont and Sheffield stop and lots of people brought cars with them who did not have parking spaces for them and congested the streets.

I called on Tuesday to get some noms. They happened to be closed for the day, but their voicemail announced it was their last week of business. Can someone confirm? Will be devastated if so

Did you lose a young cat, black with white markings?

There is a little lost kitty in the courtyard of my building. A neighbor is attempting to get him/her inside for the night. Is anyone missing a young black cat with some white marks? It is lost in the area east of Kimball and south of Milwaukee. I didn't want to take a picture because it might have scared her away. Looked clean and timid, like someone's pet. If you've lost your little one and the description fits, please post a pic and I'll let you know if it looks like the same cat.

  • Hi all, where was the cat last seen? Can you please contact me at 773-719-9640?

There is a neighbor at the corner of Spaulding and Schubert who says she leaves food out for him. I know she's been checking in on CL for the owners for several weeks. It's a tuxedo cat and he's been roaming for awhile now. I think he's a neighborhood stray.

Trails & food - Starved Rock

I am planning a day trip to Starved rock this Saturday and wondered what trail to take. I'm looking for something around 4 miles roundtrip, wonderful canyons, but great lookout points as well. Also, I am looking for a great spot to eat around that area, which is quaint and local. Thanks!

I grew up near the area and highly recommend Skoog's Pub in Utica if you're looking for really good sandwiches or burgers but also at night has great dinner specials like steaks and pastas. Uptown in LaSalle is also good, a little nicer, more upscale. There is Mickey's Massive Burrito also in LaSalle that is kind of like Chipolte but delicious. If you want the best root beer ever, Moore's Family Restaurant in Oglesby still makes their own and it is fantastic. They still do carhop service too.

My favorite trail in Starved Rock Park is the one furthest, most eastern part of the park. It wraps around the Illinois Canyon and Council Overhang about 4 miles east of the Lodge. Because they are furthest away from the Lodge, the trails tend to be quieter and less busy. There is a small parking area right off RT 71, which is gorgeous to drive through on it's own. The trail connects to the rest of the park so you can potentially park at the Illinois Canyon and hike all the way back to the Lodge.

Check out the map but really you can't go wrong with any of the trails at Starved Rock.

  • Go to Utica and eat at Ron's Cajun Connection: http://www.ronscajunconnection.com/

I drive well out of my way to eat there. It's not just "good for downstate". It's legitimately delicious.

New to the area, just saying hi.

Hi, I moved here in Sept. I'm 28. I'm shy so I thought this would be a good way to introduce myself. Unsure what else to say so I'll leave it at this and wish you all a wonderful Wednesday.

  • Welcome to the neighborhood!

  • Welcome. My suggestion, ride the bus and the L, aka public transportation. Take Fullerton bus to California. Walk from there and take train to downtown. You will get a full dosage of the city. The Latinos are Puerto Ricans (myself), Mexicans, Guatemalans, Ecuadorians, El Salvadorians, Cubans, Colombians, sorry if I missed others. All have their own distinctive culture and food and luckily for you, you have restaurants to try them all. Good luck.

The Tile App (which we've discussed for lost pets) is shipping

On the recommendation of one of the eb folks, I ordered these tiles....the theory being they can be used to track pets (if enough people have the smartphone app) kind of doing what we do here when someone loses an animal. eager to try it out and see if it works. just got an email that my pre-ordered tag are preparing to ship. will let you know if it will (or could) work on animals...if not, i'll just use it for my keys, glasses, or ventra hanger tag that i constantly lose anyway.
http://howtomanguide.com/2013/09/tech/how-to-find-your-lost-dog-with-the-tile-app/

https://www.thetileapp.com/community-find

it's coming out for iphone first, then android...

  • I ordered one of those about a year ago and it is still on the way. It's a start-up company. Would not fit inside a handlebar. My dog is chipped so I intend to use it on my purse or luggage.

  • i am also on the waiting list for the other one in development (the one that was a fund me startup) they met their goal, but those are not out yet.

Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

  • i did give my neighbor a flyer for a free treehouse fix and talk to her about getting her cat fixed. i didn't tell her that said cat was driving my cats crazy by coming in my yard...her kids had told me it was their cat and that she had just had kittens(!) but for whatever reason, cat has not been around.

Time to plant parkway trees

Fall is the best time to plant trees. Home Depot on Elston has all their trees half price. I picked up a 12 foot red maple shade tree and they only charged me $8 so that might have been 75% off. The lady working the garden center said this is the time Home Depot needs to get rid of their tree stock. Don't mean to sound like an ad for Home Depot but I didn't go there to buy a tree but ended up with one. The root balls are small so digging a hole for it should be simple. No need to deal with the city either.

  • Don't forget "right tree, right place!" A tree planted in the wrong area for the type of tree species could have bad consequences for the tree's life and the surrounding area. That being said, we can never have enough trees and this seems like a great deal!

My then-neighbors actually had theirs checked this year or last, I can't remember which. They have them alot. It only took them a few minutes to walk over to the alderman's office to get the permit. Although, I do remember them telling me after the first time how surprised they were at how rude the staff was there. The staff made a point of indicating the person that would check for it and the guy said something kind of rude/threatening to them -- as threatening as garage sale permits can get, I suppose. But, that's Rey Colon's office. Hopefully, you don't have to deal with them.

I cannot think of another north side blue line stop that does, but maybe my memory isn't so good. Are there red line stops with only one entrance / exit?

If any of us want to petition the CTA about this at some point in future, it'd be useful to recognize how rare this phenomena is.

  • Alya A. Bucktown to Logan

The station at Roosevelt also connects three lines, which only happens one other place outside the loop that I can think of.

As was said above, short of demolishing buildings/spending millions of capital the CTA does not have, unfortunately making each station accessible is just not in the cards right now.

Seriously though, I have been acquainted with the Roosevelt stop since 1985. They build a nice tunnel to connect the subway and the elevated lines, but the main entrance is a disaster, and the actual subway platform is pretty much unchanged (I guess the train tracker info is nice, but that is pretty standard at the big stops).

Belmont connects three lines as well, and I'd argue the entrance is *far* more welcoming and open/easy to navigate during to rush hour than it was before. The platform seems indistinguishable from the Roosevelt elevated platform.

This problem is caused by the employer Youth Workforce on Fullerton(at Western). They saturate Logan Square with young people hocking the paper. I get them twice a month. I quickly explain that I get these requests twice a month and I won't be subscribing. When they are persistent and sometimes aggressive I let them know I think their employer is scamming them by sending them in territory so overrun with requests that the likelihood of a sale is very low.
Two responses that young people seem to understand.
"What if I came to you twice a month and asked you buy something you already had (ie cell phone)? would you buy one every two weeks?"
"What is your address?" WHY " I would like to be able to come by your home and request a DONATION when I am running low on funds."

I have become so annoyed over the 7+ years living here that I have called the Tribune to complain twice. This falls on deaf ears. They should not be affiliated with Youth Workforce.

I'm not seeing how Robin's experience equates to Godwin's Law. This came to mind:

    http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2013/09/hendersons_godw.html

"When people in a political discussion want to put down other people who even mention Hitler, they will invoke Godwin's Law even if the person compared no one to Nazis or Hitler."

That said, I could care less how McDonald's advertises as far as language. If anything, most people's distaste comes from how they target children with their happy meal toys. It's the Espanol-speakers that ought to be offended here, if anyone.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

I worked in marketing. There's a lot of importance placed on language spoken in the home. That's the language of family and friends... brands want to be your friend. When you see an ad in Spanish next time assume this and don't be offended or assume that the targeted audience doesn't know English. They most likely do.

The subway and interstate stations are whole other animals that can't really be viewed as the same category as these legacy stations.

I recently had my spare tire stolen off my Jeep Wrangler. I did not have it locked as I bought it new and didn't think twice of it. This was me not thinking. I replaced my spare and bought locks and a tire cover. I have found my cover pulled back twice already when going back to it in am. Neighbors be aware.

  • You might also want to consider a catalytic converter lock as Jeeps are favored among thieves due to the ease of access. Trust me, I know and a $2,000 repair bill is sure fire way to ruin your day.

  • If you have a Wrangler, it is easy to get into the hood also. I got a lock installed on mine that uses the ignition key to open it. There were several times that I found the hood latches undone on mine, but they couldn't get in. Just a thought.

  • My husband's was stolen yesterday off his jeep liberty. His was locked and had a cover on it.

Lost Keys (Wicker Park/Bucktown)

I seem to have lost my keys sometime between Thursday eve and Saturday. There are 4(?) keys on the ring - a Saab remote key, 2 bike lock keys and a locker key. Most likely lost in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area - maybe near Erhler or Holstein Parks.

Thanks.

Covered Parking near Palmer Square/LS el stop?

I was wondering if any of you know of or have a garage spot available for rent that's located near Palmer Square, the Logan Square el stop or anything in between?

I'm looking to start renting the spot beginning mid Nov or Dec 1, ideally on a month to month basis, and I'll likely keep it through March or April.

Thanks!

LOST GRAY CAT

We haven't seen our gray cat since around noon on Saturday October 5th. He is all gray except for 2-3 small patches of white on his chest. He is VERY friendly and vocal. He also has allergies and without medicine his left eye will be watery.

He is very loved and we would be heart broken if we lose him.

No collar but he is chipped.
Any help would be great appreciated. Phone number is 708-908-0055 call or text any time of day.
