Looking for daycare in Logan Square

Hello,
Can anybody recommend a daycare in Logan Square? Also, not sure how far ahead I need to be checking places out. Friends have said there can be long wait lists, etc. but I'm not sure if that is everywhere in the city.... Thanks for any info!

  • Allison Logan lawyer & homeowner

Sooner the better! I take my kid to infant community montessori in Humboldt but several of the Logan places I looked at had long waiting lists.

Let's Get our Video Cameras Connected to CPD District/Cental Command

Being the IT Dept and administrator to the cameras that protect our Condo association since 2009, I have seen firsthand the power this tool has to solve crime. We've been subpoenaed twice and have produced useful video evidence for another dozen or so incidents over the last 5 years that all have helped make this community stronger. High ranking CPD Chief McNaughton has already successfully launched a pilot program in his previous position in Lawndale and we're very close to the reality where hiding from the law is no longer an option.

  • VW

Has anyone had the cops use a screen grab from a store-bought webcam connected via wifi? My ADT guy said that unless the security system uses closed circuit/hardwired and sealed system the cops won't use it because it could be tampered with (at least in the eyes of the court)--just curious if that is in fact the case, or if he was just being by the book.

  • PR

I work in law enforcement. The police and prosecutors will use any and all video. The defense attorneys might make a stink about video being tampered with but that rarely sticks if ever. The cops have forensic people to verify that the video hasn't been tampered with in. Get whatever system you can afford. Even crappy video is better than nothing.

Furniture donation and pick up

I have some friends looking to donate furniture and need it picked up by the end of this weekend. They have asked a bunch of places, including Salvation Army. No one has been able to pick up this week. Any suggestions of maybe some more obscure organizations that would do this and need furniture?

Another Package Theft

At 2pm today a package was stolen from my front porch near Armitage and Sawyer.
I was able to get a look at the theives from behind as they walked out of the alley and onto Armitage Ave near Kedzie, and two women witnessed the theft.

They are wearing all black, head to toe. One man was black and the second hispanic, both about 5'6- 5'8.

UPS claims they left the package with someone, but they clearly did not.
BE CAREFUL and have packages sent somewhere else, especially for the holiday season.

  • Tom O Engineer

Hey Alan. I work from home, so kill both those birds with one stone, yet have had two packages go missing in the past week. No knock, or ring of the doorbell. I'm also not really ready to just accept burglary and theft from my porch as 'ok'.

  • Ray D, I looked into them when we first moved and they all seem too small or waaaay too expensive. I'm thinking these UPS drop boxes are the most cost-effective, efficient decision but if you ever find a good product let us know!!

Yet another package stolen

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a heads up, had a package stolen from my porch on the 3200 block of W. McLean Ave. FedEx tracking number states "left on porch" at 11:26 am. I got the mail at noon, nothing there.

We generally request packages to have signature on delivery, however this was a gift sent from my in-laws (actually the last package they shipped went missing as well). I work from home, doorbell never rang.

I filed a police report, had FedEx run a "trace", etc.

If you happen to see this fancy ottoman hanging out in a nearby alley give me a shout I guess!

http://www.hayneedle.com/product/garrettdoublestorageottomanwithtraysideottomans.cfm

Thanks!

  • FedEx will hold your packages at any of their locations without a fee. I usually have mine held at the Kinko's in Division and it's very easy to pick up as they are open late and on weekends. UPS is not nearly as flexible unfortunately

  • But there is a UPS at the corner of Californai and Armitage, in the shopping center.

City services follows investment (and also clout-but that can work in the favor of a tightly nit minority community). Investment follows cash flow (those that can pay for housing, goods and services). Cash and cash flow ARE more in the hands of white/Anglos than others; and racial & ethnic discrimination ARE definite economic factors; but I see Green as a bigger discriminator than Black/White/Brown. A better focus than race (in my opinion)? Jobs and economic development.

@Mike Conover Unfortunately race-based economic inequality is a very real factor in all of this, particularly for African Americans. You can't solve one without solving the other. This UC study right here is a good case in point; people with white-sounding names are 50% more likely to be called in for a interview than people with African-American-sounding. A lot of this bias is unintentional (humans naturally gravitate toward the familial and to fraternity) but it is definitely there and won't be solved by simply saying "get a job."

Back to the main point though, gentrification to me is more the wholesale terraforming of a built environment by a group of people with a specific lifestyle in mind and who have the means to do so against those already there who have a different way of living and who do not have the capital ($$$ or political) to stop it. I really hate the argument I see proposed on Everyblock often that Latinos "pushed out" European immigrants here before them. It's simply a gross falsehood; these areas (Logan, Humboldt, Avondale, Hermosa) were in steep population decline 50-60 years ago as second- or third-generation immigrants started moving to the Western suburbs or further NW Chicago, looking for homes and areas with better convenience and amenities that suited them. In that vacuum, new immigrant groups (Puerto Ricans, Mexicans) filled in the void.

I think the biggest thing we are losing with the changeover in Logan Square is the loss of a neighborhood that had always been a ethnic enclave for new immigrants to this country (first Scots, Germans, Swedes, then Polish, Irish, then Puerto Rican, Mexican, etc). That will probably be lost forever now. I think the new ethnic enclaves in Chicago are likely to mostly be in the older, slightly decaying, inner suburbs.

Then you need to find enough barrels to hold all the water you will capture and we installed 8 barrels under a porch, buying Upcycle barrels made from a place in the 'burbs: http://upcycle-products.com/static.asp?path=3528

Finally - you need a diverter so the downspout stops water when all the barrels are full....the downspout should just run into an area of your yard where you can plan water-loving plants like these: http://www.prairiemoon.com/native-plants-for-lakeshore-wetland-restoration/

Our yard is completely full of prairie plants, whose roots go down 6-8 feet. Our downspouts are all disconnected. Doesn't cause us any problems at all...you just have to plan for it and we save a bunch of money watering our gardens because of the rain barrels.

If you need any help planning this out, drop a note and I'm happy to share what I know!

  • Ack! Sorry, that rain calculator should be this address: http://save-the-rain.com/

Last night/early Tuesday morning, around 3:30-4:00, my roommate and I both woke up to screams. They were definitely made by a women, but it was difficult to make out any words; it definitely didn't sound like they were joking around. We looked out our windows but saw nothing and they stopped shortly after. We live very close to the new Whirly Ball on Webster Ave. Did anyone else hear these or know what happened?

Bring the Chicago Foodseum to Logan Square

I learned about this project in the works a couple of weeks ago through an article on Eater.com http://www.eater.com/2014/11/24/7276629/chicagos-first-food-museum-foodseum-campaign Their website has more details: http://www.foodseum.org/#home

Hi friends - I wanted to share an exciting potential opportunity for the Logan Square neighborhood - to be the home of the "Foodseum" - Chicago's first Food Museum!

I learned about this project in the works a couple of weeks ago through an article on Eater.com http://www.eater.com/2014/11/24/7276629/chicagos-first-food-museum-foodseum-campaign Their website has more details: http://www.foodseum.org/#home

They are in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to open their first interactive exhibit as early as Spring 2015: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/foodseum/chicagos-food-museum

The location has not been decided, but I immediately thought Logan Square would be the perfect location, with all the new restaurant activity, fantastic farmer's market, and plans for a future rare-fruit orchard.

After pledging my support, I emailed my thoughts to their executive director, Kyle Joseph, who personally wrote me back to thank me. He said that they are "big fans" of LS and they have been keeping an eye out there, and agreed that LS would be a great fit. He encouraged me to pass along the word in the neighborhood and said he would be happy to speak to fellow residents and supporters.

If you like this idea, please pass it along, donate to the campaign, and email the museum founders and organizers that you would love for Foodseum to come to Logan Square!

  • LD

Agreed, I have nothing against the idea of the museum (I'd def visit out of curiosity), I just wouldn't invest in it as I am doubtful of its sustenance. Ditto for the juice bar (if the profit margins actually float the juice bar for a while, it will close as soon as the craze dies down, vitamixes get cheaper, or another, less expensive juice bar opens), although I think there's a big difference b/t restaurant/retail and hospitality/entertainment and not sure the 2 are comparable.

  • Carter O'Brien Chicagoan

There's of course nothing wrong with people having opinions. There is however a special place in hell for those who comment negatively on web stories/projects, etc they didn't even bother to visit before forming said opinions.

acupuncture and chiropractor?

Is there a Logan square facility that offers both services at the same location that anyone would recommend.? I have both arthritic and alignment issues going on but limited time (and $) to deal with both.

  • Sage Community Health Collective is an amazing place. They do fantastic acupuncture and they also have massage and other things, though I am not sure about chiro. Anyway, they have a wonderful mission that these services should be available to everyone, so they work on a sliding scale. If you do community acupuncture (which is a quiet room with several people getting it at once - it's not as weird as it sounds at ALL) - it's even less. I went there for several months and loved it. http://sagecommunityhealth.org/

This week-end there was a huge hawk 'posing' on the ground while someone not quite close took phone pictures. It appeared to be @ 2' tall and eventually flew up in a near by tree and posed some more. (I haven't seen any pigeons in that area lately either.)

As 'The Miss' and I went on our walk, we saw two pretty ladies walking arm-in-arm. I think they are sisters. One has a smile that could melt the snow; the other is a special needs adult who I do not believe can speak. I always say 'Hello' and the special needs lady released her companion's hand to give me a hug...a nice big hug.

Then she started to cry. Large tears. I said "Please don't be sad" and her companion said "Oh, she cries when she is happy." I said 'Well, then just keep hugging and I'm glad you are happy'.

If you see them in the park, please do say 'Hello' (Hugs are optional...)

  • I bet you saw a Coopers Hawk. One flew into our backyard a few years back so I did a little research to identify the species. It might have been 2 ft. but in a little Chicago backyard, it looked like a giant Condor.

  • I saw a hawk that fits the description in my yard a few days ago.

  • i have seen that hawk a few times… it really looks like massive compared to the other birds around there...and I am pretty sure I have seen what is left of the rabbits/pigeons it destroys… looks like a small explosion of feathers & fur in the middle of the field, with nothing else around…

the hawk i saw had quite a bit of white on it, so the coopers hawk looks to be it

Coming soon to Diversey and Richmond

This new bar and restaurant maybe a great addition to Logan Square. I have heard several different explanations as to just what it might be, stay tuned.

  • "A large ham selection will hang from behind the bar, and every guest, whether ordering a glass of wine at the bar or sitting down for a meal, will get a complimentary wooden board with a handful of fresh slices of meat like prosciutto or Spanish-style jamon with some pickles."
    How cool...

New Juice Bar in Bucktown! 24 Karrots

Please go visit the 24 Karrots Juice Bar on Armitage just west of Damen. The place is clean and bright, the people are friendly and welcoming and the menu and juices are delicious. Let's support a family owned business and keep the area from looking so empty. I have lived in the area for many years and we need more places like this around. Moms and dads they make homemade ORGANIC baby food too!! I am so glad they are a couple blocks from my house :-)

  • Joselito I write things and people pay me for it.

I'll have to check it out. I miss the ridiculously awesome juice bar that was on Armitage nearby a few years ago that was doing well but I guess expanded faster than they could sustain (can't remember its name at the moment).

It's weird that that stretch of Armitage is somewhat anemic to businesses.

  • "Doc's Juice and Smoothie's" wasn't it?

  • Joselito I write things and people pay me for it.

That was the one. Started in the current Bento Box space then moved to the cursed southeast corner of Armitage / Leavitt. That place was *really* good – I'm still sad they closed. Hopefully this new place will be a worthy replacement.

I went to the business meeting about the Mega Mall redevelopment, and nothing is written in stone, but the proposal was for: a 40,000 sq ft supermarket at the Sacramento end of Milwaukee with two stories of parking above and a two store gym over that. The rest of the block with be residential (approx 200 rental units) with retail on the first floor. It will appear to be 5-6 separate building from the outside with some set backs. There will be a new traffic light in the middle of the block for cars to turn into the parking lot. Truck traffic in the back. 20 ft sidewalks in front. 10% affordable housing and they said no TIF funds would be use (I would love to see that). The buildings will vary for approx. 7 to 9 stories. Those were the features I found most interesting but there was more.
That was the proposal. Call Alderman Waguespack or wait for the public meetings that are coming.

  • That public meeting should be interesting! Logan Square seems set on no buildings over 4 or 5 stories....with 6 really pushing it.
