Sheriff & police activity at Luna & 50th

Any idea what's going on with the sheriff's vehicles, police, flares, and giant lantern at 50th and Luna Ave near Central Ave?

  • Twitter consensus is it's a DUI and insurance/driver's licence check point on Central.

Feedback on Danny's pizza closing and Pticek's retirement/closing?

I've ben living in this neighborhood since 1998 and am really sad about these two iconic places in Garfield Ridge closing in the near future. Villa Rosa has been around for a long time. Let's hope that they can carry on the way Danny' did in that spot.

  • ordered from villa rosa tonight and talked to one of the employees. He said they are keeping Danny's recipes and re-opening as Danny's but that they are closing the place down for a while to remodel the place. I guess when you call Danny's number after Sunday you will be forwarded to villa rosa until they reopen Danny's.

It's easy to focus on those looking to rent under Section 8. Do consider thought that there are people who choose to rent their property or deliberately buy property to rent under Section 8. Focus at least equally, imo, should be on these.

Seriously, is there any difference with having a section 8 neighbor? If property becomes un kept, is it not the landlord or management company to blame? The AHCA had an effective (though racially questionable) reporting structure set up. Worse case, report property issues direct to the City on Chgo's web page.

Thank goodness there is this out for those who find themselves on bad luck. At least it is a program that helps reduce homelessness. I would rather have my tax dollars go to Section 8 housing, food stamps, bicycle paths, than more wars against 'terror' for 'freedom' and anti anyone who is not like us or practice apparently the only worth while religion!

I would rather focus energy on why people shop at Wal* , HDepot, and big-box stores rather than supporting local businesses which may be a tad little more expensive and maybe not as convenient. But it keeps the money local and provides jobs. I would rather have Section 8 neighbors that are hard workers and honest people than someone who rushes home to a SW-side 'get-off-my-grass' honey, hurry Fox News is on, who vote for anyone with a last name ending in 'ski' type of neighbor.

A little diversity on the SW-side is a good thing! Relax.

  • mom nottingham ☆★☆★

I'm all for helping folks. But their has to be a limit to that help.
It's link card scams I don't want my tax dollars going to...I do support local business. But still shop at Target and Menards. I'm more a CNN girl than Fox. But it's the hard working section 8 neighbors that won't be your neighbor...it's the lower end of the spectrum that will...that's why people are concerned.

We need to get together

The Checker's drive-thru is causing issues on Archer already and has placed people at risk. As residents, we need to get a petition together to cease operations until a suitable traffic plan is put into place or have this establishment close down. It is NOT good for our neighborhood.

  • The entrance to Checkers is really rough on small cars.

  • I noticed that as well..i have a Malibu and noticed how entering their lot felt "weird". Lol..

What is the future of the 23rd ward

Since election time is approaching a big time I started to look around what is happening in my neighborhood especially in the 23rd ward where I live. From what I've heard there are 5 candidates for alderman so I wanted to learn more about them and I googled them for info. The first website I came across was the one of a guy named Martin Arteaga and this is what I got. I am not sure what that means so I did a screenshot of the website and can somebody educate me what this message means?

Section 8 plaguing Garfield Ridge

Work hard all my life to be able to afford a better area for my kids to grow up. All of a sudden I start seeing large amounts of families moving in my neighborhood with little kids. First thought is "that's wonderful"! Then come along the same problems that I left my old neighborhood: Gangs, Crime, Public Assistance Abuse, Drugs, Graffiti, and so on... Then I come to learn that the same type of people I have been avoiding and running away from our able to afford the same place I work my butt for because of Public Assistance programs like Section 8, LINK, and all that good stuff that continues to get abused by lazy people that take advantage of tax paying citizens. The worse is majority of these people have nice cars, nice homes, and continue there criminal ways in a neighborhood that people like me WORK hard to support.

Example I live near a family where a lady has two kids, one in private school, a "husband" that deals drugs right out of prison, and they are on public assistance. Here is the kicker they both have a nicer house than me, nicer cars, and both own businesses.

Guess the working stiff loses again and has to just be a chump about it!

-ugh, Chet give it a rest already with the Whole Foods and espresso machines. These aren't the solution to Section 8 housing vouchers, in fact they are irrelevant to the issue. There are people with Section 8 vouchers in all corners of the city, many of whom are within walking distance, not to mention biking distance, of Whole Paycheck.

    http://abc7chicago.com/home/cha-subsidizing-citys-priciest-rents-for-low-income-residents/225671/

As far as realtors and selling points of the SW Side goes, price isn't the only benefit. The SW side is affordable, but nowhere near as cheap as many other neighborhoods in the city. Strong communities, good neighbors, low crime, good parks, good schools (Dore, Kinzie), single family homes, and good shopping options are draws. The SW side is a GOOD community.

I know you love Whole Foods and espresso machines but they aren't a panacea to society's ills. Using your logic, the Whole Foods on Halsted and 63rd will completely transform Englewood when it is completed, right? Bridgeport has a growing number of espresso machines, and it also has many more gang bangers than the SW side. Shouldn't organic, ethically sourced espresso shots chase out all of the SDz and Kings?

  • We need to just come together as a community and people stop running to the burbs when they think the "neighborhood has gotten bad"...I'm so sick of people saying the neighborhood is bad..it's filled w city workers..retired police etc...
I understand people r upset the neighborhood has "changed". .yes it has but that's life..let's not run from it..

I went into Dunkin Donuts on 61st & Harlem on Sunday at 1pm and ordered 2 large dark roasts with a shot of turbo, the worker tells me they're out and have to make more or do I want to get something else....I said I will wait for fresh coffee, so I pay and go to the restroom. As I'm coming out I pass the female worker and see she is pouring my two coffees (for some reason I wait and watch) she adds regular coffee 1/4 of the way and the rest with DECAF! I can see the cups and know they're mine because they mark the outside of the cups....she gives them to me and I call her out on it, she said they first take care of the drive thru and ran out....again...so she didn't think I wanted to wait again so filled it with what they had. Now, I'm going to work, I'm a driver, and NEED the caffeine...how will this help me? But more importantly, how is this right?? I go to DD everyday, sometimes twice a day, how many times do they do this? Pure lazy, or what? I should've asked for the manager, but like I said, I'm off to work! They shouldn't be able to get away with stuff like this.

  • Thats why I go to Starbucks. I cant tell the difference of decaff or regular at DD.

  • Leslie Nope Nothing Like a good laugh

They always seem to be cleaning their latte machine every time I go. The prices are really not much different than starbucks, but at this point I just go to 7-eleven or make my own.

new business

Will definitely make sure Munoz is not re-elected this year, giving the OK to build another speedy cash on 47th cicero while the surrounded areas were against it, and he went ahead and gave the Ok himself. That kind of business brings negativity to the area and the wrong crowd. I thought the goal was to improve Cicero Ave, not make it worse.

  • Wow!...times they ARE-a-changing...when we're at the level of discussing
the 'pros' of of ex-cons, where best to set up a shooting range, the news
of pawn shops and fade shops.... We might as well register the 14th and
23rd Wards with CINESCAPE, for their next dystopian film setting. At least
that would bring some money into the community (unless Rahm or Burke or
Madigan or WHOMEVER, have 'shares' --and tentacles-- in that Chi-town business too)....

  • u2u2me, I am not saying bring a felony franks type of place here, my point was the neighborhood complained and complained about fears of what they thought would come but did not, the owner gave in and closed up and the new business
brought in exactly what all of the complainers feared would come with the hot dog stand

This cat is looking for it's home and is lost wandering outside. It would like to find its way home, or is looking for a foster home before winter arrives.

Not sure of the gender. Very passionate and affectionate, loves to be pet.

  • Hi Citizen,

Thanks for the explanation. If wet food works for luring the cat, and the area where he was last seen is known, has anyone considered setting a trap? Shelters loan humane traps to catch cats. The temperature is going to drop to near freezing by the weekend.

Let's talk development. Let's talk University Village. Do you remember when Maxwell Street was much rougher and grittier than it is today? I can remember and I am sure you do, too, because it was not very long ago. I spent time at UIC and I was able to play a key role in that community center development. The result was a successful redevelopment and the creation of the popular and much-patronized University Village. Residents and tourists no longer have to tolerate the grit, the abandoned buildings and the feeling of hopelessness that those things bring. Residents, tourists, students, passersby, and all can now enjoy walking, jogging, biking, and patronizing the safe and vibrant streets of University Village. This is a perfect example of how valuable resources can invested intelligently into the community so that EVERYBODY WINS.

To revitalize the 23rd Ward, we need community development and community outreach experience and HANDS ON LEADERSHIP. Throughout the ward we see vacant lots and abandoned buildings that are vandalized and underutilized. Let's take matters into our own hands. Let's revitalize the 23rd Ward. I'm ready and I'm up to the challenge. The time for change is now! We need to revitalize the Archer Avenue Business District and redevelop the area near Midway Airport. We need more business and jobs. This is what I will fight for as your next 23rd Ward Alderman.
