Marijuana dispensary could be headed to Oak Park

Preliminary report puts Harlem and North proposal on top

As we predicted, Brad Zerman is the top applicant for a medical marijuana dispensary in District 36 (which includes Oak Park and other near-west suburbs). But, as this article says: "everything could change with incoming Gov. Rauner." We noticed a "for lease" sign in the window of the space where Mr. Zerman wants to open an MJ dispensary in the North/Harlem strip mall.

If a dispensary goes in there, it seems unlikely that the State of IL will choose another location just a few blocks away at Belmont and Harlem in Chicago, which one applicant has proposed.

At this high point on The “Union Ridge”, Indians camped out for several days preparing themselves for War. They then followed the Grand Av. trail to the mouth of the “Chicago” river where Fort Dearborn was located. Massacre took place at 16th & Prairie Av., near Soldier Field.
After the massacre, a war-dance was held by the Indians on the west bank of the DesPlains river near todays River Road & Lawrence Av.
A grand barbecue of four large animals cooked over fire pits, was at the expense of the local Indian Chief, and lasted several days.
In the 1860s William H. Gale (Galewood) found evidence of this first camp, with stone weapons, a battle-ax and lodge poles near present day Mobile & Bloomingdale Av., on top of hill. Indians could see every signal fire & Ft. Dearborn across Chicago's treeless Prairie plateau
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR INDIAN SPIRITS TONITE!

A Chicago historian brought up the point of "Should event be called a Massacre or a lost battle by the Americans". The Pottawatomie were only gathered because Man in charge of Ft. Dearborn promised Indians Money, Rifles & liqueur, if they escorted settlers to Ft. Wayne in Indiana. It's only when he reneged, that these local residents got hostile and attacked. It's funny that Pottawatomie were uptight about having to share Chicago with others, when their own tribe came from Michigan only 100 years before, after the Miami left the area. What do you all think?

  • I think it should be called a lost battle by the Americans. Because alls fair in love and war.

  • Yes Yola, todays historians no longer describe this event as a "Massacre", but a "Battle".

  • HoneyBadger resident

About this presidential library......a topic about which I am admittedly ignorant. As such, I have just completed reading a half dozen articles on them and now have lots more questions. Such as......why we need another one, why National Archives run only some while states run others, all presidents don't have one and my very biggest question - who is paying for the one Rahm wants here.

  • Good for you for doing some research. We're not experts, but are under the impression that presidential libraries are privately funded. We're also under the impression that Roosevelt and all the post World War II presidents have presidential libraries.

A disrespected community (?)

Very disappointing that Commander Sanchez has been transferred from Chicago's 25th police district. He was only on the job for a few months. From all reports, he really cared about doing a good job. He was truly concerned that Urban Myth was disturbing the Amundsen Park community, for one thing. The 25th District has had three commanders in less than 12 months. It was also a shame that Commander Navarro and Sgt. Weigland were reassigned.

Why does the CPD keep transferring commanders and sergeants like this? Are the less affluent communities of color disproportionately affected? Check out this essay:

I would suggest that people stop voting for people that you are complaining about. This city has been in Democratic control since I was a little boy, in other words, the forties, the fifties, the sixties, the seventies, the eighties, the nineties etc. I myself considered myself a counted on Democratic vote but no longer. The crime is I have no choice but vote for the person who is the best Democratic candidate according to my standards. I vote but the person I eventually have to cast my for vote for just barely passes the "smell" test.

Hold your alderman, your Mayor, your State Senator or Representative responsible by voting for the most independent person you can find. Ask them a question will you always vote along with the Mayor, will always vote for Madigan or Cullerton led houses in Springfield? You know what is a slap in the face is these folks run unopposed so why should they listen to any community.

  • It's great that you are a thoughtful, involved citizen who is committed to voting. I wish everyone was.
