36 ward campaign signs removed overnight

All of the Omar Aquino signs were removed from our block last night. It appears that they were wiped out throughout the ward. Sounds like dirty tactics to me.

  • The Tribune's endorsement of Rahm means nothing to me. Nor does the Sun Times'.

  • John Kass and Chuy endorsements are also meaningless to me.

Sayre School

I been receiving notifications of the Sayre school about how bad the principal is and how bad are the teachers since they allow bullying in the classroom setting. Is there any parents out there who agree to this? If it is I feel that Sayre kids parents should get together and speak out.

  • MontBen Nordica est. 2009

One more thing. If you want a rallying point to start organizing parents, start going to LSC meetings and bring as many likeminded parents as you possibly can. Invite people to dinner before hand or drinks after. When I was on an LSC, trying to put pressure on our principal, there was nothing more discouraging than an empty meeting room, especially when I knew that there were people suffering.

  • Evan N. Newland neighbor

I am one of the community reps on the Sayre LSC. We are currently working on our annual review of the principal. One of the sources we will be using to evaluate the principal is a survey of parents, which is being distributed at the school today. If you are a current Sayre parent, please complete the survey by April 2. Otherwise, if you know a current Sayre parent, please encourage them to complete the survey. Thanks.

Hi everyone. Thank you for last year's patronage of the farmers' market but we won't be continuing. An explanation is provided below.
1st and most importantly, Ald. Cullerton/Ald. Reyboras/our local chamber didn't support it and then I, as an independent business and the acting market manager, was cited and fined for putting the Sunday signs up to advertise the market days. It was a heavy fine plus court costs and attorney fees. The Friends of Portage Park and the Portage Park farmers' market manager, in particular, were opposed to a new market so close to Portage Park. They covered and often removed our market signs. Their signs were never cited or removed. We were in complete support of their market and hoped that our market only benefit the community overall. This in conjunction with a lack of Aldermanic/Chamber support, was truly the demise of the market.
Last summer 30 commercial property owners attended a closed meeting, (business owners only), to address crime and loss of business in the area. That meeting included Ald. Suarez, Commander Navarro from the 25th police district, its CAPS leader, (Commander Bay16th police district and Ald. Cullerton were no shows & didn't send representatives). The overall goal of the market was to help improve the area and counter the crime and loss of businesses, obviously certain powers mentioned didn't concur. Ald. Reyboras/Cullerton appear to want pawn shops and liquor stores as a solution. As commercial businesses not living in the ward, we can't vote so we don't count. Suarez & Reyboras reiterated this fact at this meeting with Ald. Reyoras stating that"there is no crime in his ward". It would have been step forward if the market continued but until we get a new Alderman with a better vision it isn't possible. Thanks again but for now no more market.

  • Kelly, I'd like to talk with you about your original post on your farmers market. As mentioned above, we tried to make a go of a farmers market on North Ave. Please email Judith to schedule a mutually-convenient time to talk: opfolk@comcast.net. Thanks!

  • GOLDUST COMMANDER

I am glad that fruit fly market is closed plenty of other places to shop!!!!

Andolino, Walls endorse Graham

Though it's not mentioned in this article, it's also worth noting that Alderman Nick Sposato has endorsed Chris Taliaferro for 29th Ward Alderman.

Hopefully, the North Avenue Zoning and Development Advisory Committee (NAZDAC) will be able to continue carrying out its mission of North Avenue revitalization, whoever wins the runoff election and whatever changes may occur in the 29th Ward.

What are your thoughts on these developments?

  • I agree that voters should make up their own minds. If you haven't attended a candidate forum yet, there will be one this Thursday, 3/26, 6 PM at the Sankofa Center, and another one on Tuesday, 3/31, 6:30 PM at Austin Town Hall.

Barb, I feel the same way about the remap. I was not here for Banks, but I moved into the ward just in time to support Alderman Sposato in his runoff in 2011. His sign for committeeman was the first one I ever put up in my yard.

Think of the big picture though, the spirit the old 36th is alive in the new 38th and now we have a chance to spread our style of community engagement to the new 29th. This is happening because of our sheer voter turnout numbers and unwillingness to have our minds made up for us. That's a dangerous combination for any powerbroker.

Just remember that it took two cycles to get Alderman Sposato elected. You don't have to believe in any one candidate as much as you need to believe in your neighbors.

Is the Chicago Gaylords gang still active?

A few days ago a friend of mine told me they were still around in the Belmont-Cragin/Portage Park area... but I don't believe that. Simply because I haven't spotted a group of European gang members in years.
What do you guys think/know?

handyman recommendation

Does anyone know of a trustworthy, reliable person to handle minor repairs and maintenance who works in our area?

  • Art & Martha K. Galewood residents

We have used Hometown Handyman (in Oak Park, on Harlem just north of Chicago) for a few jobs and have been happy with the work. His wife owns Yuppie Puppy and Doggie Day Play, which are also well-run local businesses.

  • I have used hometown handyman as well. Very affordable and great work. Yuppie puppy has been my dog's groomer for seven years- she is absolutely the best!

  • Theresa J from Oak Park Commercial Real Estate Broker

Thanks, I was looking for a handyman for small jobs too.
