Shots Fired Saturday and Sunday

It's been a trip back to the bad old days this weekend in Uptown.  Don't know if the gangs are starting a new (senseless) chapter in their ongoing quest to snuff each other out, or if they've got spring fever, or if they think the police response will be reduced due to NATO being in town.  In any case, not fun for the rest of us.

Living and Playing in Chicago

Edgewater Play Groups?

Hi-am soon going to become a mom and although I have plenty of time to research this, I was just curious how does one go about joining or collaborating with other parents with small children and infants in the area? Are there playgroups or parent groups/organizations in the neighborhood? I would like to hear your suggestions for those parents raising children in the city, and especially here in Edgewater-thanks!

  • Crys Edgewater Momma

When your child gets a little bit older check out Chicago's park district programs. The Broadway Armory is doing some major renovation and they are adding a ton of great new programs that are extremely affordable. I signed up for their adult yoga class so I could get back into my post baby body. That class has helped me keep my sanity, especially after having my second child.

I agree with Crys that the park district programs can be great for both child and parent. We have had great experiences with Ms Jessica and Ms Daneen at the tumbling program at the Armory. (The Gill Park swimming program is also awesome). BUT all the programs are not of...

I agree with Crys that the park district programs can be great for both child and parent. We have had great experiences with Ms Jessica and Ms Daneen at the tumbling program at the Armory. (The Gill Park swimming program is also awesome). BUT all the programs are not of the same quality AND the online signup is a disaster AND if you then have to wait in line in person to sign up: it will turn you off the entire program!

If you make the effort to talk with other parents while you are watching your kids at park district programs - that informal network of parents provides real-time scuttlebutt on the ins and outs of raising a kid in the city.

Also wiggleworms starts as early as 6 months old and is another great program for the kid, and for the adult to meet other cool parents

Hey there, I have lived in the RP/Edgewater neighborhood for the last 5 years. Basically that means I am a few blocks south of Devon around Glenwood. That neighborhood is very nice, with several community gardens in walking distance, sufficient grocery stores (incl. natural grocery stores), and a few great restaurants like Uncommon Ground. The block I live on is generally pretty quiet.

Rogers Park undoubtedly has more to offer by way of cultural attractions and is a bit edgier, more interesting. However, there is more crime and ongoing gang problems that seem to be plaguing the area around Morse/Ashland (this feedback is from someone I know who lives in that area). Rent is likely a bit cheaper in RP as well.

Both can be near the lake if that's important to you. And both are accessible to transportation options like the Red Line and buses.

Hope this helps! Happy apartment hunting!

Blastomycosis outbreak in Chicago?

Hi, Just read this article about a potential outbreak of blastomycosis, an invisible toxins dogs inhale and often die from. It mentions Hollywood Park, Legion Park, North side 60659 area.

http://www.dogheirs.com/events/409

Please check it out and if you walk your dogs there, don't until we learn more. And if it's true, these areas should be roped off! My friend's dog Audrey is currently battling blasto and it's a tough road ahead, not to mention crazy-expensive. Please check out info about Audrey progress. There's a lot of valuable info for dog owners to be learned at this site.

Cappleman assaulted while cleaning up bread crumbs

Sorry, I couldn't really come up with a comical title for this post, but figured I'd pass this article along.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-police-woman-arrested-for-shoving-alderman-in-pigeon-dispute-20120518,0,384755.story?track=rss

Seems Cappleman saw a woman feeding the pigeons on Wilson, so when he came back and began sweeping them up she threw more bread crumbs on him and shoved him into the street before fleeing.

Police caught her later, again feeding the birds, and arrested her.

Frankly, I say good for Cappleman. Feeding the ducks is one thing, but feeding the pigeons just creates a mess.

Alderman Assaulted by Pigeon Lady

Alderman James Cappleman, who just celebrated one year in office Wednesday, was pelted with breadcrumbs by an Uptown resident, who is known throughout the community as the "Pigeon Lady".  According to the Chicago Tribune story, "A 59-year-old woman is accused of shoving an alderman she thought should have “better things to do’’ than sweeping up breadcrumbs she left for pigeons" in the 800 block of West Wilson around 2:30 yesterday afternoon.

Getting Channel 5.3 (In time for the Olympics)

So this may not seem like a very important question unless you don't have cable -like me- and want to watch the summer Olympics on 5.3 as well as channel 5.

Has anyone else noticed that 5.3 has been blacked-out for awhile? Is anyone else bummed that this means less coverage of everyone's favorite quadrennial sporting event?

Does everyone but me have cable?

Loud Bang

Did anyone hear a loud bang this morning? I took my dog out at about 6:45 and just before coming in (a few minutes later) there was a loud bang. This was in the alley between Argyle and Margate. I would have dismissed it as a dumpster being dropped but when I came in, my wife thought I came back for my umbrella because she heard it and saw a flash in the window. I imagine we were not the only two who heard it as she heard it inside while showering with the bathroom window closed. I called 911 but they had not received any other calls.

Columbia Student

New to Uptown

I just moved to the area and can't really decide if I like it or if I want to stay. I previously lived in South Loop and loved it down there. Here i always hear people yelling on the streets and I see it when I walk to the Wilson stop. I am a young female college student and don't know if I feel comfortable walking around by myself here (especially at night when I sometimes get home around 2am). I'm just looking for some advice or for some cool people to get to know since I don't know anyone around here or just any little tips you can give me. Thanks!

Hey Jaclyn, first off: WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD! Now to your post: I wouldn't recommend being at the Wilson red line at 2 AM. If anything bad is ever going to happen it will likely happen at the red line at around that time. If you know that you're going to be late from a bar/ friend's house/ etc. strongly consider getting a taxi. Other than that, Uptown is quite safe.

The only crime here is gang-on-gang and the occasional theft.

I assume that you are not in a gang/ do not wear gang colors/ do not throw up "signs" at cars rolling by and thus you will not be noticed, let alone harassed, by any gangs.

Have you gone to the used bookstore 'Shake, Rattle & Read' yet? Have you checked out the restaurants on Argyle (Tank Noodle, Pho 777, etc.)? Check these out.

And my girlfriend and I are gonna be at the Uptown farmer's Market every week; we hope to see you (and everyone) there!

    Best!

  • Hi Jaclyn. I'm a Columbia student who's new to the area as well. Living by Sheridan and Lawrence. I like the area; it's a lot more diverse than the loop could ever dream to be, and I'm a fan of all the new food to try in the area. Already gotten around a bit, and it's been really great so far.

From "Off Limits" to I-Go In Six Months

The latest development with the four lots on the 4400 block of Clark is that they are now a parking lot for I-Go cars, and soliciting monthly parkers. There's a "For Sale" sign on the southernmost lot, which leads to a real estate listing that says that lot is priced for $199,000 and is one of four contiguous lots for sale. It mentions that the lots are in a TIF district and brags that they're across from the new BET Theater, which we appreciate.

Dog-Friendly Apartment Needed for June 1st

Neighbours,

I'm a responsible, reliable, professional tenant looking to move into a dog-friendly studio or 1 bedroom on June 1st. I currently live in a 2 bedroom in Ravenswood and I love the area, but I would also consider moving to Edgewater, Buena Park, Uptown or Andersonville. My dog is an older, large, potty-trained and well behaved mutt (not a pit mix).

I prefer to be contacted directly by owners or building managers and not brokers. I would also consider a sublet situation if there was a possibility to renew the lease.

Please get in touch!

One Edgewater businessman has been cleared by the State Dept. to be at the McCormick Place NATO conference on Sunday and Monday. He will be serving the morning coffee to anywhere from 1 to 500 foreign journalists along with pastry from Hoosier Momma Pie Company in Ukranian Village. If you are watching a telecast of the Conference and see a paper cup from Metropolis Coffee, you are not imagining.

Sad to say that the dry cleaners who replaced Drive/International Cleaners on Lawrence, next to Dib, has vacated the premises.  A reader saw a truck removing all the laundry equipment last week, and although it's hard to see from this photo, the storefront is completely empty.  Hope to see it filled soon.

wow. Recovering stolen merchandise is pretty rare, from what I hear. Glad to hear you got your bike back. Sorry to hear it was stripped and dropped. Was it dusted for prints? Is CPD pursuing leads to arrest the thief/ thieves so maybe you could also recover the fees? Sux that your baby was stolen, but it's practically a miracle you got it back. Of course (being the victim of theft, I'm speaking from personal experience), you'll NEVER recover the time and aggravation.
