State Budget

Newly elected Gov. Bruce Rauner announced in his budget speech that the Regional Transit Authority can lose up to $128 million in state funding, while downstate gains $120 million in capital projects. Yet we pay higher gas, property and sales tax than downstate Illinois while they reap the benefits of Chicago/ suburban taxpayers. Downstate Illinois is draining state resources and it's all brought to you in part by our corrupt governor.

During the past week, my office has received several calls and emails regarding a potential project at the empty lot on the northeast corner of Argyle and Long, across the street from the Jefferson Park Metra station.

I want to update you on the status of the site. Right now, there is no pending proposal.

Earlier this year, the owner of the land had proposed a 4 and one-half story, 48-unit development on the site. In late Spring, residents came to my office and expressed concerns about the project. I took those concerns back to the property owner, and, at this point, we are waiting on an updated proposal.

I want to assure you that, as with every other zoning change, any proposed zoning change must be presented to residents during a community meeting. I require that anyone seeking a zoning change send a notice to everyone owning property within 500 feet, and we plan those meetings for evening hours at locations in the community.

Once we have a pending proposal for this site, we will schedule that meeting.

  • I heard a new plan has been proposed. Any updates?

"County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia on Friday accused Mayor Rahm Emanuel of turning a deaf ear to skyrocketing complaints about O’Hare Airport jet noise and signed on to the demands of a noise-weary group of residents.

On Saturday, Garcia will join members of the anti-noise Fair Allocation in Runways (FAIR) Coalition at a park that lies directly beneath the flight path into a runway that has made Northwest Side residents miserable since it opened in October 2013. It averages flights every 3.5 minutes, FAIR contends.

Garcia and Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) are the only mayoral candidates as of early Friday evening who had signed on to FAIR’s “statement of principles,” which includes five specific demands.

Chief among them is a pledge not to “de-commission” any of four criss-crossing diagonal runways, even after a new parallel runway opens later this year. Killing off any diagonal runways could shift even more flights over city residents east of O’Hare already complaining about a bombardment of new jet noise.

Yet, another key demand is to halt an October 2013 take-off and landing plan in favor of a “fair allocation of runway traffic between existing and new runways” for both daytime and nighttime traffic."

Well, hey, that is always an option isn't it? but no my family and I don't have any plans to move. Like you, we will be around, fighting for our neighborhood, effecting change where we can. Consider the following. I just got a mailer from Garrido crowing about how he "saved Milwaukee Ave from a road diet with 4000 signatures", and as an avid cyclist I'm not happy at all about it. A few years ago I worked on a committee at Wright Colleg to collect signatures on a petition to bolster bike lane improvements in the 38th Ward. We had some meetings with Ald. Cullerton, but let me get back to my point here. 4000 signatures is 4000 signatures; this area of the city is socially conservative, no doubt about it. It's a frikin' miracle that they're even going to restore the current bike lane (albeit with actually a few enhancements, amazingly) after they resurface the road. And even Arena said the Milwaukee Road diet was now off the table. The people in the area just don't want to go on that kind of diet. So you take what you can and keep fighting step by step.

  • music man,

As an avid person biking (http://www.peopleforbikes.org/blog/entry/how-smart-language-helped-end-seattles-paralyzing-bikelash) and I'm assuming you've visited the Lawrence road diet, what is the real difference between the Milwaukee Avenue road diet and what has been presented as more of the same, slightly tweaked?

Pedestrian refuge islands will be the same.
It's unclear if the plan will have interconnected signals with the overcapacity remaining.
    Pedestrian bumpouts will be there.
    We get Garrid0/200's useless sign.

The difference is pavement marking. Pavement markings are easy and relatively inexpensive to remove and reapply. The road repairs are needed to keep people biking safe.

Downtown Chicago has been relocating utilities in anticipation of this seasons Downtown BRT.

PACE is talking about Milwaukee Ave ART
    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-pace-plan-met-20150121-story.html

If BRT downtown is well received, ART on Milwaukee will follow.
Acceptance of modal choices on the street depends people seeing it work.
When BRT works, and demographics change, and the economic benefit of more people biking is recognized, it would be little cost to restripe to get the protected bike lanes that all road users deserve.

I can suggest who NOT to call... Nuzzo Plumbing in Norridge. This guy (owner) serviced my Mom's for years. After a visit for a dripping faucet, the water pressure was lower than prior. Anyway, I try to adjust the pressure at the main without success. A few days later I telephoned to request his return, which he replied, "The entire house needs to be piped." Really , you are not going to investigate? "No." I asked for a rough estimate. $6,000 minimum!! I politely said, no thanks! Another plumber actually brought to my attention some suspicious tampering and soldering of pipe. He did not want to be accusatory, but the house did not need to have every pipe replaced. He cut out the small " tampered with " section, and all was great!

Deep dish delivery recommendation for Jeff/Portage Park?

What's your favorite delivery deep dish and why?
Poretta's thin crust is the bees knees (settle down LaVilla fans- they're a close second) but deep dish would be nice every now and again. What do you recommend?

  • Chikago Pizza, next to the McDonalds @ Elston/Milwaukee. Delicious deep dish!
Been ordering take-out from them since 2001. They do have a small dining room, but we always do pick-up.

  • Keith Gale St. Baseball Guy

Pete's #2 on Montrose is one of the few deep dish places that can best Giordano's, in my humble opinion. http://petespizza2.com/

Chikago is not my favorite, but they remain open very late and offer gyros topping for their pizza, which is pretty special when you're feeling indulgent.

Rats!! Jefferson Park Grill CTA Terminal

There have been 2 incidents of rodents this past week (01/26-30) The 1st:
While walking from the CTA, on the north end of the terminal, at the 'Jefferson Park Grill', a rat 6" long was sitted on the stair stoop as I neared it disappeared, inside I guess. Incident 2: A lady bought a paper from the Sun-Times man and replied "I just hurried out of that restaurant (Jefferson Park Grill') I ordered and sat down, as I waited a rat ran over my foot, I screamed and told the grillman what I thought and left! I believe this place should be inspected or shut down. I can't get a hold of Arena, as usual.

This camera is a joke! The park that it's supposedly protecting is behind the car wash on a side street and is not accessible to Lawrence Ave ! The camera needs to be moved to Lavergne where there is an actual park. I lived on the south side of Lawrence at Lavergne and its nearly impossible to cross the street. They put up the "people crossing signs" in the middle of the street and they were immediately run down. Kids and adults alike can not cross here. Move the camera.
