Taste of Polonia concludes Labor Day

5216 W Lawrence--steps from the Blue Line ... a Bounce House village for kids, live music and great food

  • Big Oaks Big Oaks resident since 1979

It's a shame with all the sponsors they had they felt the need to nickel & dime everybody. The websites I seen did not mention $5 for this and $10 for that. Fishy indeed. They should make their money on food & booze not kid stuff. Pretty sad. :(

Bellyer and Jewels, we were there Sunday right when it opened at noon. Same experience with the bounce-houses, and my husband and son were in one when it deflated. Scary. I was pretty sure I saw the kids' area advertised at $5 in Nadig and on DNAInfo, but sucked it up and paid the $10. One of the duck games was $3 to pick one duck. ONE. We both couldn't believe what we shelled out compared to previous years, and we agreed this is probably our last year attending...way, way too much money for a neighborhood festival.

Arena Fund Raiser

Why isn't the alderman holding his fundraiser in the ward at some small business that could use a boost?

  • Kenji's 13th EB Account Yeah it's really me

I can honestly tell you I don't know anyone else who spends more of their paychecks directly in the Ward than the Arena's. I actually use that fact jokingly with them. It would drive me nuts.

I'll bet Cullerton is runner up. He's All Ward All the Time™ too.

  • Zoes mom working at home

Aren't there banquet halls on Milwaukee Avenue? They are in the 45th .. just saying ... we want to bring business and people here. Including the downtown money folks. I would think they could accommodate 100 plus people. I for one would have been more likely to attend that.

Fishing is one of my absolute favorite things to do, and since I eat fish or seafood 2-3 times a week, it would be nice to take a few home to clean and cook up. Does anyone here have a favorite fishing spot? Any insider tips on fishing local waters? I have only ever spent "reel" time trying for bass and pan fish up at our cottage in Wisconsin and spent my childhood fishing for cats, bass, and 'gills down South. I know there are pike, muskie, crappie, and other varieties in the waters up here though. I'd like to try for some of the bigger boys once in awhile.

I'll be attending the fishing derby this weekend at Busse Woods, and think it's a great opportunity to get a feel for the waters here. Anyone have luck over there? The Derby is taking place at Grove 25, but there are SO MANY other areas to fish.

Have a favorite spot? A lure you swear by? Please share!!

We remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago and we used American Flooring and Countertops in Niles for our kitchen granite. Typically with a minimum of 25 sqft, they have pretty good deal. They did a great job. Only hiccup was they wrote down the wrong sink spec. We ordered a single deep basin since it was a corner cabinet/sink and they wrote it up as a double basin, which is wider. We noticed this on the day of the install. The sales rep came out to verify the situation and once he realized that the sink was ordered wrong, he had new granite cut for the correct sink and they were back out within two days to complete the install.

If you are looking for a small amount of granite (less than 25 sqft) you may want to check out AMF Brothers in Franklin Park. We used them for our basement bathroom. They resell their remnants/cut offs. Only downside is that the selection can be limited.

We actually used Studio 41 (Pulaski location, talk to Sergey) for our cabinets. We purchased Cardell which are semi-custom. We caught them on a special and saved a ton of money. Great quality and construction.

The reason we split up our purchases was due to price. As a project manager for a local architectural firm I did an extensive pricing exercise soliciting numerous quotes based on our plans. At the end of the day we saved money by splitting up the cabinet and granite purchases.

Does anyone know of a daycare or a person who takes children to school? Something reasonably priced. I have my son that needs to be dropped off at school 4 days a week. Portage park elementary. My previous daycare has stopped all drop offs/pick ups. Thank you in advance.

  • Where do your kids go to school?

  • Sorry I see where they go.. Good luck!

  • Call the school. I am pretty sure they have the number of someone in the neighborhood who does that. They may know of other options, too. Also, I think the new daycare going in by Berteau and Central, behind Mia's, might be doing before and after school care. Not sure when they open, though.

The blasts are being heard in areas other that Jeff Park i.e., Sauganash, Portage Park, Oriole Park, Edison Park, etc.

  • Lawrence sewer project hasn't started yet - I think they are targeting after Labor Day. We are told all work will occur during the day.

Sky Liquors is still open!

I'm glad none of the guys that run Sky Liquors were hurt when a car crashed through the front of their store yesterday! Apparently the driver was somewhat hurt (though not drunk), and a customer suffered a minor injury. A construction crew was on the spot, and they're open for business today. There was about an inch of liquor on the floor from whatever was on the end cap of that last aisle, and part of the counter was taken out. It's a miracle nobody was more seriously hurt, or worse.. killed.

  • I saw that. This could have been much worse considering the proximity to Super Dawg on a packed saturday afternoon!

Sorry, but I fail to understand the opposition to this. A high end liquor store is not going to cause fights and disturbances. That is not a bar or neighborhood tavern. You can't buy a nice bottle of wine in this part of town. Paternos is a joke and reeks of a corner bar. I have to drive to Skokie or Niles or Lincolnwood to get nice wine. And so what about the Convenience store getting a liquor license. Really Mr. Garrido, can I buy a nice Willamette Valley Pinot at the convenience store? I bet you wouldn't even find the swill the Convenience store sells in a high end liquor store. This is a political fight that Garrido wouldn't put his dog in if Arena didn't support it. That kind of opposition is what is keeping this part of town in the rust belt. Let's keep a vacant building instead. Or better yet how about a dollar store? Dollar store with no liquor license.

Alderman Arena at odds with Jefferson Park Advisory Council

Alderman wants council to increase its membership and has claimed that the recent council election, which resulted in an Arena aide not being elected, was not properly announced. Thousands have attended the council's free events at the park, but turnout to its meetings is low, which Friends of the Parks says is common for councils in the city. This is not the first time that the council and Arena have disagreed.

  • Maybe I'm missing something, what or who, is the Jeff Park Advisory Council pushing? Park advisory councils do not work independently, their guidelines come from the Chicago Park district. They answer to the Chicago Park District. Often community group members have political aspirations. Alderman Arena was an active member of a community group. Pamela is your point that an alderman should be involved in any group that may have someone with political aspirations? Sound like old time politics to me.

  • Mo, you can find out what the council has done and advocated for by reading DNA and Nadig articles about it. The council came up with some pretty grand plans that I am not sure the park or CPD solicited or were involved in. I don't really understand the rest of your post. I am just making observations based on the news, and then wondering about some things that don't make sense to me.

  • The groupon for one person works out to $3/beer, for two is $2.75/beer, and for four is $2.50/beer

If the list price is a reflection of beer price, there'll be $7 beers without the groupon.

    Definitely worth it :)
