City Council committee follows voting custom and approves pedestrian street for Jeff Park

When the Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Pilot Act was passed last year, the Illinois Departments of Professional Regulation, Agriculture & Public Health began to prepare licensing for dispensary sites throughout Illinois.

Before they open in 2015, the dispensaries must meet all of the state's standards. These standards are the strictest in the country. The patients who qualify for the medical cards are eligible only through their physician's recommendation.

The medication will be reserved for very specific medical conditions, such as ALS or certain cancers. Additionally, the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals must approve any applicant who wishes to open a dispensary in the city. 13 potentially dispensary sites are reserved for Chicago, two in Jefferson Township.

However, the final decision on where medical marijuana dispensaries are opened is rendered by the State of Illinois.

Right now, we have two bending ZBA application in Jefferson Park, one at 4758 N. Milwaukee, and one at 4760 1/2 Milwaukee.

I will host a community meeting on the application at 4758 N. Milwaukee at 7 pm Monday, Nov. 3, at the Congregational Church of Jefferson Park, 5320 W. Giddings. Please come out, learn how the applicant plans to operate, and get your questions answered.

Alderman, can you please confirm that it is highly unlikely both of these dispensaries will be approved? Since only two permits are allotted for all of Jefferson Township and there is currently a third application in Old Irving Park, it seems unlikely that the state/city would approve two right next to each other - but I want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

Also, Missy - as others have stated, the Illinois law is very different from the California law. There should be concerns about these places opening, but the concern should not be about the "type of person" who will be legally patronizing these places - rather, we should be concerned about the security measures in place as marijuana dispensaries are still all-cash businesses. I'm much more worried about robberies than the small potential for "marijuana abuse."

The mosque would be located in a triangular-shaped industrial building that is located behind a series of bungalows in the 4800 block of North Kentucky Avenue and that is bordered on all three sides by an alley, with no direct access to a street. The community center would be across one of those alleys in a portion of a community building at 4860 N. Elston Ave. that houses a car rental agency.
Project organizer Naser Nasser is scheduled to present plans for the project. The project would be contingent on the Zoning Board of Appeals issuing a special use for religious assembly.

Medical marijuana dispensary sought near Milwaukee-Lawrence intersection

A medical marijuana dispensary has been proposed for a former print shop at 4760 1/2 N. Milwaukee, next to a woman's boutique.
A special use for a dispensary also is being sought for a second storefront on the block. No more than two dispensaries can be located in Jefferson Township, which goes as far east as Western Avenue and as far south as North Avenue, and includes all of the Far NW Side of Chicago. A dispensary also has been proposed for Elston-Kedzie in the 33rd Ward. The earliest which the zoning board could hear the Lawrence-Milwaukee proposals is November.

I really wasn't happy when the 7-11 @ Veterans Square got an extended liquor license having been flashed by an out of control drunk there on a Saturday afternoon and waiting :20 for a police officer while my friend watched the guy so he would not bother anyone else. Dave H. It is not just based on the amount of students coming in. OLV has pledges for the next three years. The alumni continues to support and donate to the school. The fundraising and raffles are also bringing in money and the enrollment is continuing to go up. If you don't want to support the neighborhood Catholic Schools, that is up to you. We are hoping that St. Cornelius will reach their goal and stay open. I think it is wonderful that they chose to help us at OLV last year and now in turn, my children are eager to help them and see how giving and helping feels. I think that is how it should be in a community.

  • Pledges aren't the same as cash in hand. They're great, but you will always lose some of that because people's situations change (job loss, illness, death, etc).

The other problem is that by using these fund-raisers for operational expenses, you're going to be hard pressed to find more money if the roof or boiler goes bad or if you need new computers, etc.

I really do wish your schools the best, I am just having a hard time seeing how it will be viable in the long term.

JEFFERSON PARK — St. Cornelius School must raise $250,000 by Oct. 10 to avoid being placed on a list of schools the Archdiocese of Chicago is considering closing, church officials told parents and parishioners Thursday.

Officials from the Jefferson Park Catholic church and school at 5252 N. Long Ave. said they were informed two days ago that the archdiocese can no longer give the school $250,000 a year to cover a deficit created by the school's declining enrollment and lagging fundraising, according to a letter sent home with students.

"The amount of money is significant and the timeframe is undoubtedly short, but we are confident that our campaign to raise the necessary funding will be successful," according to the letter from Principal Christina Bowman, the Rev. Daniel Fallon, the pastor of St. Cornelius, and parish business manager Kelly Fierro.

St. Cornelius, which is almost 90 years old, is not in danger of closing before the end of the school year, Fallon said.
