Failed Health Inspections

More than 50 licensed Chicago restaurants failed inspections at least three times each this year, a review of city data shows.

Six of the eateries -- Trinity Bar, Taj Mahal, Hana Restaurant, Fischman's Wagyu Wagon, Nueovo Leon Restaurant, and Lawndale Food Market -- each failed four separate health inspections.

Argyle and Long Update

During the past week, my office has received several calls and emails regarding a potential project at the empty lot on the northeast corner of Argyle and Long, across the street from the Jefferson Park Metra station.

I want to update you on the status of the site. Right now, there is no pending proposal.

Earlier this year, the owner of the land had proposed a 4 and one-half story, 48-unit development on the site. In late Spring, residents came to my office and expressed concerns about the project. I took those concerns back to the property owner, and, at this point, we are waiting on an updated proposal.

I want to assure you that, as with every other zoning change, any proposed zoning change must be presented to residents during a community meeting. I require that anyone seeking a zoning change send a notice to everyone owning property within 500 feet, and we plan those meetings for evening hours at locations in the community.

Once we have a pending proposal for this site, we will schedule that meeting.

First I want to state that I'm not against medical marijuana or legalizing it for that matter. Not too long ago I saw a report about security for the facilities and transport. The news report depicted armed guards accompanying the transport of the goods. These facilities may very well become high profile targets for gangs and strong arm robberies. This concerns me far more than people coming into the facility to pick up their prescription.

Security arrangements and safety should be part of any discussion going forward with these dispensaries. Our police resources are already stretched thin in the 16th District.

Plumbers

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good plumber with decent prices? Please let me know and if you have used them.

  • About that $735... Of course a price like that might include a more than average quality heater and some fancy new venting and plumbing work and maybe a realigned gas line. But if it was just a straight swap of like sized average quality heaters, a little high. IMO

  • Hush Little Baby

What's a forty gallon gas one cost now and what's a company's time worth now in 2014?

I've installed about a dozen in my lifetime but just direct replacements not brand new installs or moving them to a new location.

I'm a jack-of-all with emphasis on the jack.

I have coached on the youth level for years and love football if it is taught right, fundamentals and proper technique for tackling. Private school programs have better coaching, trainers and more funding to keep their players safe. After this lawsuit settles CPS programs won't have the funding to compete for state titles etc. Taft should focus more on academics

Greetings Neighbors! The FAiR Coalition invites you to meet the Chicago Mayoral Candidates on Wednesday, Dec 3. The meeting is open to FAiR members and those interested in finding solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution at O'Hare and Midway. Remember the changes at both airports were done without any real community input.

The next FAiR general meeting is on Wednesday, 12/3 from 7-9pm at the VFW Hall at 10 W. Higgins in Park Ridge. Please RSVP/let us know if you are coming to info@fairchicago.org or via the FAiR Website www.fairchicago.org using the "Contact Us" link.

As part of the meeting, you will have a chance to meet in person, hear from and ask questions of several of the Chicago Mayoral candidates. Confirmed to be there so far are Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and Alderman Bob Fioretti. All Mayoral candidates including Mayor Emanuel have been invited. This will be the 11th request sent to Mayor Emanuel to meet with FAiR. He has ignored, dismissed and not responded to the previous 10 requests.

For all FAiR members whether you live in Chicago or you live outside of Chicago, it is no overstatement to say that this next FAiR meeting is the single most important gathering we have had and one that you must attend. Why?

Simply, the solutions FAiR seeks fly right through the Mayor's office. The Chicago Mayor owns and controls the airports serving the entire region, O'Hare and Midway, and the Mayor is the last and only missing piece at the table FAiR has created. With the right Mayor or the current Mayor doing the right thing, the success we seek is well within our reach. You can see why it is critical you attend.

One final item, FAiR does not endorse candidates for elected office. We present candidates to the membership to decide who is most closely aligned with solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution we are all experiencing.

    Dennis

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

@Dennis: If you think the issue is important, you really should try to attend. If the turnout is poor, the candidates will think most people in the neighborhood do not think the airplane noise is a big deal.

Queen of Insanity - I think this is right on. In my own experience my wife and I lived in Lincoln Park and Lincoln Square before purchasing in Jefferson Park. We always had one car, but bought a larger second one when child #2 came around. Yet, we managed to find a place just 5-6 blocks from the Jeff Park terminal. Being carless is not as appealing right now, sure, but it will when I'm older, and I like the fact that amenities are around so as my kids get older they will be less reliant on me to drive them places. I work downtown so not driving has its perks, too. One of the reasons I'm pro-development and additional density (not anywhere, just near the train station) is because I have a rational, experienced, professional based belief that viable businesses and residential neighborhoods around transit create strong communities.

  • Zoes mom working at home

@Queenofinsanity It's probably not going to be single occupancy at 2k a month it will be at least 2 + people per unit. Easily affordable, splitting the utilities. the plus would be the location to the train, the negative will be the noise.

Quigley Admits that the O'Hare Expansion "May Have Been a Mistake" . Now what?!

Here's an excellent article and audio interview that speaks on the current noise issues many of us are having with the new O'Hare expansion. The article hits home on a lot of the points for us here in the 38th ward.

I'm SHOCKED to see that an elected official is (GASP!) admitting they might have made a very expensive mistake. Quigley has been nothing but fair about this in my eyes, and he's certainly earned my respect as far as this matter goes.

Veterans Day ceremony held at Milwaukee/Higgins in Jefferson Park

The Indian Portage VFW Post 3592 held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the war memorial at Higgins and Milwaukee avenues in Jefferson Park. Members of the Jefferson Park Chamber of Commerce were among those attending the ceremony.

New exhibit at the National Veterans Art Museum at 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave at Six Corners
100 Faces of War Experience:
Portraits and Words of Americans Who Served in Iraq and Afghanistan

The exhibition will be on view from November 11, 2014 through May 1, 2015.
The 100 Faces of War Experience is an open contemplation of the American experience of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It consists of portraits of 100 veterans who were chosen to represent the statistical demographics of the American involvement in these conflicts. Each person was asked to provide the words that accompany their portrait. They are allowed total freedom in what they want to say. This exhibition is timed to coincide with the official end of war in Afghanistan and it is meant to be a place of open contemplation upon the American experience of these wars.

These portraits represent a cross section of the American experience of these wars and the statements of the people pictured reveal a candid, unedited understanding of our recent history. Nine years in the making, 100 Faces was created by Artist Matt Mitchell. Each portrait represents a part of the American statistics of these wars and comes out of a personal meeting between the artist and the person pictured.

It doesn't seem to be as clean as it was; also, the shelves are not kept stocked...and the carts are much to be desired...I no longer take a cart if I have to go to that Jewel...whatever I can carry is all that I will buy. Also, there is a young woman behind the lunch meat/salad counter that is extremely rude...I ended up not buying from that counter because I was upset with the way she talked to me...anyway, it really seems different within the past 4 months or so...has anyone else noticed this?

St Cornelius to be part of regional school plan, according to pastor

St. Cornelius School update: Pastor Dan Fallon tells parish that he agreed to have the parish school be part of a regionalization plan. Details of the plan are still being worked out, but Fallon reported in the Nov. 9 church bulletin that the agreement kept St. Cornelius off the Archdiocese's school closure list. It is not clear whether St. Cornelius would be the host campus as part of a regional school, which reportedly would involve at least four other existing NW Side parochial schools. The school recently raised about $250,000 in an effort to demonstrate to the Archdiocese that the school should stay open and that it could cover its own operating costs.
