Young Man Knocking My Door at 8:30pm asking to charge his cell

A young man knocked on the door and tried to gain access to our home saying he wanted to charge his cell phone.

  • My rental house was broken into where a stove and fridge were stolen a couple of weeks ago. It seems people are knocking and when getting no response they assume no one is home. My home was broken into a few years ago by a young man. Police caught him by his fingerprints. Our communities are so sad now with burglaries and abandoned homes.

How can we use this to stay informed.

I really want to stay in Washington Heights but I am no longer feeling safe. Last night there was a big brawl of some sorts that ended in gunfire. I did not hear anything about it on the news or police blotter. I did not really know where it was coming from but it seemed to be so close that it was in my yard.

Brookins, who was the first speaker, stated that he fully supported the residence, after which a comment was made in the crowd "yea cause he wanna turn it into a charter school". There were several chuckles heard about that comment. There were many other speakers there, mainly community residents, some of the children, and teachers. None of the speakers agreed to the turn around plan. Ms. Brooks took the mike and stated that "this is a slap in the face to all of the dedicated , hard working teachers that are trying to do a good job". She went on to say that " if resources were available to the school that they (CPS) wants to give the turn around people, Gresham would do better too!". Her comment was met with thunderous applause It was also stated that several other schools had lower scores for much longer than Gresham so why now? I took the mike and asked if any of the residents ever been on the bike path down at Navy Pier? Not one person said yes. I stated that the $60 MILLION dollars that the alderman and mayor signed off of to provide a bike and pedestrian fly way over Navy Pier is where your school funding is, lets go get it! Wonder what the residence got in return? One of the white teachers stated that they will make this a turn around school, fire all of the staff then bring back new teachers who will be mostly white.

Chicago Tribune's "New Plan"

Doris Brooks, candidate for Alderman in the 21st. ward attended the Chicago Tribune sponsored , "New Plan of Chicago". The topic in this installment was "Chicago Forward-Jobs for the Future". The dissection took place this past Tuesday at the Spertus Museum on Michigan Ave.

According to Ms. Brooks, "although some of the conversation was excellent, some of the information that was discussed by panel members was not really new. They talked about how we ( African-Americans) lacked the job skills needed for our new economy; how disappearance of factory jobs of the 70's and 80's left our present workforce ill prepared for this 21st century service economy". She went on to say that, "they also touched upon the fact that lack of family structure affected how our children were not prepared at home for the challenges of school resulting in underachievement and high drop-out rates. To me, they did not offer any real solutions however the newer initiative by the Chicago City Colleges are to be applauded. As I understand it, for the last 3 years, they have established a college to careers program that partnered employers with Chicago City Colleges faculty and staff to better prepare students for careers".
"Some of the information that was presented gave me several ideas on how to proceed with new job training initiatives as well as supporting established ones in the 21st ward."

  • The bottom line here is that are relevant local issues out there and does this individual have a position or even aware of them. All I hear are crickets versus a position. If you think the questions here are negative wait until the other candidates especially Brookins and Sherman go in. I hope this lady has thick skin because its going to get real ugly.

  • They are going to peel her easier than a boiled potato.

Doris Broks For Alderman 21st ward

Read the article on Doris from DNAinfo. Seemed more like an article on Brookins. I have some comments on this. First, if the alderman does not have the last say in what businesses open in his ward as Brookins stated, then why would his chief of staff be in trouble for allegedly taking bribes to obtain liquor licenses. Second, I though that is what the 21st ward wanted and needed, a variety of businesses. Third, why is he (Brookins) making the attraction of businesses to the ward his priority for his next term? It seems to me that should have been a priority of his in all of his term(s)

No amnesia here nor in the growing conversations I'm having with others. By the way, I too read the article and found the comments equally interesting.

  • Jeff Janulis CAPS Rep

There is an instrument for setting term limits already in place.... they are called EL#ECTIONS and everyone that is a citizen over the age of 18 can participate in them, unless you think the people are too stupid to vote in their best interests.
Term limits are in place for the presidency and we see how that turned out - had to take Clinton out of office and got Bush II in his place.

More on Doris Brooks enters 21st ward race

Wow Casey, calling someone a re-tread because of their age or because they want to achieve another calling in life doesn't add anything to your appearance of intelligence. I thought this was a venue for meaningful dialog. After all, someone's mother, father, brother, sister or best friend could decide that they might want to embark on a different career path. Would they be considered re-treads because of that? If they decided to go back to school to learn computer operations...

I thought this was a venue for meaningful dialog. After all, someone's mother, father, brother, sister or best friend could decide that they might want to embark on a different career path. Would they be considered re-treads because of that? If they decided to go back to school to learn computer operations then asked you for a job, would you not hire them because you considered them re-treads? I would imagine that you would first look at what they are brining to the table before you kick the "re-treads" out of your office.

Another Bridge to where?

Don't know how my original post was removed from the mainstream but just saw the news again about the $60 MILLION dollar Navy Pier "Fly over" and got me all p.o ed again. I bet they are thinking "so what? What are they gonna do about it?". They peeped our whole (yea, I said whole) card and ain't nothing we can do about it. Again to Casey, is this why we need educated, young, people to be aldermen?

  • Yes my Alderman voted for Brookins to lead the black caucus and yes his leadership is questionable. The issue Casey and Alderman Sawyer have goes beyond political. For the record I let Alderman Sawyer know that I felt the black and progressive caucus let the mayor off the hook.
