Chuy says "he knows violence"in new debate

He should, his son is a self admitted gang member!

  • Bger East Village neighbor

    Robrob
I know you are referring to Mikeg but the way it's written sounds like I'm your neighbor which I am not. Look I have a really horrible neighbor which I wish would go away. But I'd never say or write that publically. I know I just did but no one knows who I am referring to.

  • Yes I was referring to mikeg, and you are right to assume my statement was a hypothetical.
Obviously I don't care about telling him to move in a public forum.

She's applaud and discussed at her re-elected alderman Ervin.
This area is filled with senior citizen who are afraid to come and now you give the corner boys a new place to hang out and have random shoot outs.

Meeting Room

In need of a free meeting room with a tv & wifi for next Sunday to hold about 10 people anywhere from wicker park going west to Forest Park

  • KC resident!

Try the City of Chicago building on, uh, Chicago Avenue. (aka the Goldblatt's building). There appear to be a few meeting rooms available to the community in there.

  • The public library Mable Manning branch on Madison and Hound has WiFi and meeting room. They prob have a tv as well.

  • Yes, most public libraries in the city have meeting rooms with WiFi. I'm not sure that all of them will have a TV available, though. As for the Goldblatt's building, the main meeting room is for use by the City. The library does have a small group study room available to the public, but it's not large enough for 10 people.

Beat 1221 CAPS Meeting Wednesday at 7 pm

The Beat 1221 CAPS Meeting is Wednesday at 7 pm at the Smith Park Field House and will feature two very special guests.

Unless they are needed elsewhere, we will have a demonstration by a K9 officer and his four-legged partner. An added benefit -- the officer was formerly assigned to the 13th and 12th Districts, most recently as a member of the Tact Team, so knows our area very well.

Beat 1221 borders are Chicago to Kinzie and Wood to Kedzie.

Information

In respect to several comments, you are correct regarding investigating where the TIF funds are being spent. However, there are options for small businesses when the bank loans are out of reach: Accion Chicago ( loans are from $500. to $100,00) up to 72 months and Lisc Chicago ( loans are $500 to 2.5 million dollars) and a small number of grants. The information is not really being given to the masses...

Also on a different note, was the cheerleading/dancing program ever started in EGP? If not, are there any similar activities in the community? I did check with the park district. Thanks.

What is the city planning on doing with the closed school on Oakley and Lake St?

Does anyone have any idea what the city is planning to do with that land or building? Right now and in the summer it is not much of a park and seems to be only utilized by homeless people who wait for services from St. Malachy's across the street. It would make a great space for a dog park.

Amber Building/Viva Plaza

Just saw that the first floor doesn't have Lyft training anymore. It now says "ANNEX" and "never sleeps", anyone know what's happening? I have been excited to see the restoration and investment in the neighborhood.

  • Still waiting on anything official, but the rumor is that it's going to be co-working space, even on the ground floor. Doesn't make much sense to me (and I was hoping for a restaurant) but that's what's out there right now. BTW, if you live in the area, join the UK Village Community page on Facebook -- it's being discussed there.

Ash tree removal due to Emerald Ash Borer

Hey neighbors, I have very sad news to share.

Chicago has been devastated by the EAB, an invasive species that kills ash trees in as little as 2 years. They're the small, shiny, green bugs you have probably seen on the trees during the past two years. If you notice small "shoots" projecting from the base of trees, you can bet that's a tree that's been infected by EAB. Basically every tree in our neighborhood has been affected and will probably be destroyed in the next year or two.

Ash trees are a staple of Chicago's neighborhoods. I live next to one of the tallest and most amazing trees in the neighborhood (on the 1200 block of W. Huron) and it's tagged for removal.

The tree has been noticeably suffering over the past year and I'm utterly distraught that it will be removed. Not only is it beautiful, it served to shade and protect the house and really beautified the block. It's going to be extremely bare without it. I've always joked with my wife that when that tree goes, we go too...I just was hoping it wouldn't be so soon.

I'm hoping the city has a more amicable solution than uprooting our century-old Ash trees, though the EAB is essentially a death sentence for our Ash trees. Will there be a replacement? Saplings? Anything? I called the Forestry department but got no significant answers.

i just wanted to share my lament. If you see the giant tree on Huron with the orange signs taped to it, take a moment to admire how strong and amazing of a tree it was - it will be gone by the end of the month.

  • For those of us who enjoy Skinner Park in the West Loop, we can say our fairwell to a number of those trees as well. Notably the trees that align the Loomis pedestrian path between Monroe & Adams. Sad, as those trees provided nice shade in the Summer, and were a beautiful part of these park.

  • I am happy to report the marked Ash trees on our block were pruned today and not cut down.

The dog guy was probably trying to do the right thing, but he screwed up. Two other guys saw the opportunity to steal an empty van. The dog guy tried to stop them, so they showed him a gun. Dog guy figured he could make himself look more like a victim than a f'up, so he omitted some details in his story to the police. Security camera ratted him out. End of story. I'm sure the dog guy is in trouble enough already. There doesn't need to be a full-blown investigation. This is between him, the company owner, and the police.

Snow dump trucks

Hey West town,
I'm sure you guys are sick about the snow. Last night while shoveling my car for the fourth day in a row. I noticed a dump truck full of snow driving up and down Ohio and Elizabeth. I read on WGN news website that the city plans to clear the snow in neighborhoods dumping some other open land Dump in the city. Has anyone else seen these trucks on your block?!

  • bob

I doubt the city will be clearing every street like that. Maybe main thoroughfares. Most private parking lots have the snow removed when there is this much.

  • KC resident!

The city did do just that during a big storm years ago. Totally possible.

Safe pathway for kids

When our mayor closed all these schools in all Chicagoland communities. He said "I'm going to have safe pathway for all our children going to the schools." Well what I see is children walking into the streets and not on sidewalks where there are so much snow on the routes of the safe pathway. I believe the mayor should be held responsible for not having these safe pathway route clean by now. So that children are not walking into any danger.

  • Jon Banks supervisor banks

The owner of the lot is responsible whether there is a structure on the property or not. Sadly, most vacant lots are not maintained as required by the city.

  • Valerie F. Leonard Lawndale Community Builder and Policy Analyst

The city doesn't maintain their own lots, from what I can see.

Perhaps the better question is why do African American shootings get more press. Apparently the fact that more shootings numerically are done by European Americans is a statistical fact in the United States yet it is all but buried in the news priorities. People shoot who they know. Unless it's a serial killing sociopath. Perception is seemingly more important than reality. Prove me wrong, do the work.

Is there a problem with violence in America. Is it correlated with poverty and education across the color line? Yes, and does the rest of the world, perceive us as a violent country? Do we act based on what we believe or what we know as facts? I suggest that believing what you hear and are lead to see by conventional wisdom doesn't make it true. Here's another seldom expressed reality, affirmative action helped white women in greater numbers than blacks. Chew on that fact.

  • @MnHPK, I'd argue that black on black shootings get significantly less press than white on white. The former has unfortunately been assumed as fact, while the latter is usually newsworthy.
