West town SSA - unfairly raising resident property taxes

It seems the overwhelming majority of residents would be AGAINST this very significant tax given the benefits almost exclusively seen by business and not west town residents.

There were some posts in October about the West Town SSA - was anyone at the hearing on Oct. 2 about the reconstitution of the SSA? What is the status?

It's a small percentage of what a property owner's tax would normally be. And everyone benefits. SSA's are the reason you have clean streets, nice trash cans, street banners, events, and other such improvements. I would say that benefits all the residents. And SSA's truly give the local neighborhood control of how this money is spent, and not politicians or City Hall.

  • I don't see anything online about a Nov 24 meeting. Is there a meeting on Monday? Also, I never heard what happened at the October 2 meeting. Does anyone know?

Who is my alderman?

I have tried to use this website to figure out my alderman and what district I fall into, but when I try to put my address in, it doesn't take it. And I can not see my street on the map. So hoping one of you may know. I used to think it was Burnett, but someone told me that he wasn't my alderman. THanks. This was the website I was using: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/other/provdrs/clerk/svcs/find_your_ward_andalderman.html

My address is 111 S Morgan St.

Thanks.

Late Night Fire on W. Chestnut?

I saw a house on fire and smoking majorly last night around 12am-1am. Tons of firetrucks, noise and commotion.

The firefighters used saws to open the roof. I can't find it anywhere on the news.

Anyone know what happened?

I hope everyone is ok.

Caught Red Handed/changing timing on yellow lights

Has anyone gotten a red light ticket where the time was less than the 3 seconds allowed by law?

I saw in the Sun Trib a large article where the city illegally got 8mil from issuing tickets to people who did NOT break the law.

The city will KEEP the ill gotten funds.

If that is true...that sucks. Why should a mayor and his CDOT Commissioner be allowed to break the law and get away with it.

Red light cameras continue to be a problem for car drivers in Chicago.

As traffic violations affect insurance rates. As it is expensive to pay a ticket, the fines, and school...this action against Chicago drivers should be addressed by ALL Aldermen!

Get the $$ back for those who were ticketed illegally!

What do others think? Have any of us gotten one of those bogus tickets?

It is true that MAIL can be terrible in Chicago. Who knows if it is a postal fiasco or another systemic failure in Chicagos' parking tickets.

THANKS for the response. Ask Jackiowak if she can look into it. If it is a system failure, we can also send to the DOIT top person. Department of Information technology and the Inspector general. The Trib also has investigators who might be interested in your case as DATA to support their claims about Chicago Parking Tickets.

There is also a head of the parking tickets. He should look into if their lock box person dropped the ball or the mail. That person has the authority to do that. I used to know the guy...he was WONDERFUL. But he is gone now. The question is, Who replaced Mat D?

New Restaurant at Ogden and Grand

My boyfriend was walking past a crew working on the old Fogon exterior at Ogden and Grand, and they told him an Italian restaurant is opening in the space in a month or two. Does anyone have any more information?

  • i wonder if it is the same owner who basically switches between Italian and Mexican restaurants every 2 years or so...

  • I'm curious too. I actually liked the previous Mexican restaurant (not Fogon)....or maybe I just liked half priced margarita Wednesdays :)

  • NJ West Town Dogwalker

Hope they can finally get it right on that corner. It's a great location and I'd love to see something new in the neighborhood!

Those who are less fortunate may not have been taught that if you know better(information, education, etc) you can do better.Yes when Election time comes, people will gladly pass out flyers for some of those self-centered politicians who pay them $ 75.00 for a few hours work. Yet they are not the only ones who keeps voting them in.
Where do you get your statistics ?Where do you expect low wage & no income people to live after almost 25-30,000 housing units were demolished(projects) and the severe foreclosure crisis, not to mention high unemployment rates of minorities in Chicago. This was done by design. Please read :University of Chicago Press, Making the Second Ghetto: Race and Housing in Chicago, 1940-1960. Many of us were once middle-class homeowners & working people (now low-income)who were hit hard during U.S.Economic Crisis and are still trying to recover.
