The City of Chicago is pleased to inform you that the application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam started July 16, 2014 and will run through September 16. This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014. In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. We have lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is our hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Attached is the job announcement, as well as the FAQ’s, which provides all of the key information about the application process and the exam. In case you’d like to cut-and-paste the link to the application website, here it is: www.cityofchicago.org/FireApplication. The website also contains links to additional information.

During the posting period, applicants can call (312) 744-4976 or email fire-application@cityofchicago.org with any questions or concerns, and they can also seek assistance in Room 100 in City Hall.

We have also modified the way candidates can apply for Veterans Preference. Applicants may apply for Veterans Preference at any time, even after the posting has closed. There is no longer a cutoff date for the submission of documents showing eligibility for Veterans Preference. However, the later the preference is applied for, the later it will be applied. Detailed instructions on how to apply for the Veterans Preference are included in the attached FAQs.

Elston Avenue

Walsh Construction is trying to put a TRANSFER of TRASH location on 949 Elston. All of the neighbors received a notice of hearing. It's going to be on July 18, 2 pm, City Hall. 121 LaSalle, Room 200. They want to use it as a modified transfer station. From what I understand, previously they had a construction company there and they were loud at all hours of the night, waking the neighbors, etc. I also heard that the backyards had debris from the site and odors. I was not here at that time but I'm concerned about all of those factors and also chemicals, being close to the water. Please attend the meeting- we need your voice!

Any good news in West Garfield Park?

I bought a property here ten years ago and have not seen much improvement. I live in the building. I hope that the Lot Program, or whatever it is called, which allowed EGP residents a shot at buying vacant lots for a buck moves into WGP. There are at least 6 vacant lots on my block. Gardens!

  • There is something called the "Large Lot" program which offers vacant lots for sale for 1 dollar with a maximum purchase of 2. You have to live at and own a property on the block where this is being offered. EGP started taking applications for lot purchases on July 1st. If that is where you reside, I wouldn't waste any time!

  • Taj's page are envirnoment dose not define who we are.

    Thank you so much.
    I'm on it now!

If you live in the West Town Community and had a Garage Broken Into, a Bicycle Stolen,

Or something stolen from your backyard you may be interested in this message. The Smith Park Advisory Council, (SPAC) has confirmed a thief has been caught by police who has been stealing from the 1800-1900 2000 block of West Race Ave and Ohio Street. If you recently had a garage break-In or something stolen from your car or yard, please contact SPAC at emailsmithparkadvisorycouncil@gmail.com. There's a chance you may get your proceeds back. You will need your police report number.

Additional information will be shared at SPAC meeting tonight at 6 p.m.

  • Why would I contact the park district instead of the police?

  • Smith Park Advisory Council, (SPAC) smithparkadvisorycouncil.org

Thank you for your comment "Smith Parker" you are not contacting the Park District. I am the contact with specific information regarding the thefts. However, if you live within the vicinity of the area identified in my post, And you have been a victim, email me. I can assist in attempt to get the stolen property back. I am a Chicago Police officer and I do not want to post certain information. I hope this explains the post.

  • I already talked with our CAPS facilitator and she put me in touch with the right people. Thanks, though.

Madison/Green - Did this building get approved?

HI..just saw this on Everyblock:

A 17 story building got a permit for construction for Madison/Green. Did I miss that this got approved?

  • It sounds like this was the project. But I hadn't heard about the approval or voting meeting, either.

I wouldn't be so concerned about high buildings if anyone in the area had a plan to limit them to closer to the Loop, but planning seems to be non-existent here. There needs to be a more defined commercial vs residential zone in the West Loop and that isn't happening, either.

  • That was another Burnett deal with Taxman, the developer. Right after Taxman got the green light from the city (basically Burnett), he turned around and sold the land, meaning a completely different looking structure can now go in as long as it doesn't exceed the approved height limits, etc

Pete's Fresh Market

I visited Pete's and I was impressed. The store is a lot bigger than I thought it was. I didn't get to really shop like I wanted because I had my 4 year old twins with me. Pete's does not have the kid friendly carts where I can put both kids in one cart. Instead they have kid sized carts for kids to push. My kids enjoyed them but I didn't enjoy chasing them. LOL I will go back minus my kids!

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

My neighbor and I had a good time there. At last! There is a really nice grocerystore nearby. That other new store whose name starts with an M....will have a run for their money that is for sure.

Any update to the daytime parking ban from the West Loop 1:30 - 3:30pm weekday ban?

I can't believe Fioretti hasn't had to answer exactly WHEN this ban will be over, other than to say about West Loop residents, "... although they appreciate the program for preventing day trippers from gobbling up all their parking spaces...". Well Bob, now WE can't park here, so no, it hasn't helped anything. At least before, with the ghost "daytrippers" (that no one seems to have ever seen) gobbling up all the spaces, we had a CHANCE to park in our own neighborhoods. Now friends/family have to park blocks away if they don't want to pay. I wonder if Bob cut a sweetheart deal to force WestLoopers to pay the garages and meters. The ban certainly isn't helping businesses.

  • I didn't see these articles, thanks Carlos! What a disgusting attempt to collect revenue. Fioretti knows EXACTLY what's going on. Aldermen know what's going on everywhere due to the amount of people contacting their office, so they're obviously doing nothing about this on purpose. Why not just take the signs down? Corruption at it's finest.

  • A couple of years ago after Alhambra and City Winery opened I attempted to have my street, Willard Court zoned for permit parking (we're the only house on the block). I was told due to the area being commercial, it wasn't allowed. This residential thing is a fairly new phenomenon and until the zoning is changed most of the West Loop still considered a commercial zone.

Watch out for traffic jams because of Kennedy work

Saw on TV that traffic from the espressways will be diverted to streets. If you are driving this week end not only stay off the expressway but be prepared for major arteries to be more conjusted. I heard Western, Cicero, Elston, Eisenhower expy were mentioned as alternative routes.
