Anyone interested in getting a fenced dog park in Smith Park?

We've been walking our dogs up to Wicker Park, but it'd be nice to have a designated, fenced-in, off-leash area closer to home. Anyone else interested or know if this has been attempted before?

Thanks --Leila

Drones Flying In Your Neighborhood

My sleep was disturbed at 2:30 am this morning by a drone hovering above our apartment building. I have seen it hovering over my building and adjacent ones in broad daylight several times, sometimes for several hours. This is the first time I have seen and heard it at night. Has anyone noticed this happening near their homes? If so, is there anything that I can do about it?

  • Big Al WP Big Al, Your Neighborhood Pal

T in Chi-You're probably right that it is gas powered. That must have been the "fuel exhaust" I was seeing coming from it. I didn't even know gas powered "toys" existed as I thought they were all battery powered. I don't know anything about that drone you're talking about.

  • Big Al - I've never flown one of the gas powered helicopter models, but I've seen videos and it totally make sense that the exhaust would look like something be sprayed down from it. (Plus it would be really cool to set up a RC helicopter to spray water on...

Big Al - I've never flown one of the gas powered helicopter models, but I've seen videos and it totally make sense that the exhaust would look like something be sprayed down from it. (Plus it would be really cool to set up a RC helicopter to spray water on small fires - it's pretty common to make scale WWII planes that do things like drop fake bombs or make machine gun sounds when you hit a button on the remote control - a fire fighting RC chopper would be pretty awesome, particularly for firefighters!) Thanks!

I've never been able to find a city ordinance that flat out bans flying radio control planes, helicopters, etc (some cities/towns do have them, though). A big part of why I'd like to help defuse this situation with our neighbor who is buzzing the neighborhood is that I'd like to avoid some alderman with nothing better to do passing some sort of ban of "drones", and which would probably ban all other radio control flying gizmos. (I'm thinking of some of Burt Natarus' more zany proposals...)

It's cool that firefighters can use some of their down time to fly a RC heli, I can do some test runs in the alley, and even that our neighbor can do *a little* flying around (but not when its really bugging people, and particularly at 2:30am). It would be nice if we could avoid heavy handed new ordinances or unnecessary police involvement (though, repeatedly waking people up in the middle of the night is a pretty appropriate thing to call the police about, if it keeps happening.)

WATER: Non-metered account v metered for 2-flat

Hi neighbors, Just curious if anyone had any success with installing meter save in their 2-flat. My water bills have gone from $300 -$600 per 6 month use, and when I called to inquire, I was told it's because of an unmetered account.

I joked that I should start selling the water to other people to cover the crazy increase, and bizarrely enough the rep told me I should. Oh, Chicago.

Just wanted to inquire from fellow neighbors before I sign up.

  • Our bill was $200+ every six month and had it changed to meter so now $30+ bi-monthly. We also got a rain barrel from the city to water the plants.

  • CJL ...

We got a meter 3 years ago. Our last full 6 month unmetered bill was $400. Since then our highest two month bill has been under $50. So, even if every bill now were our highest (they aren't), and the unmetered amount hadn't gone up (it would have), we'd be paying over 60% less. In reality, we are paying about 80% less than if we had not switched.

Seems like a no brainer, too me.

Hi all. Not sure if you were aware but Jan from Jan's Antiques moved her business to Evanston from the Fulton District a few months back. Her landlord asked her to leave the space she leased for over 10 years. Not many people know this but she has suffered through huge inventory loses, a stressful move, major health problems and a car accident that totaled her car. Thankfully she and the other driver were not injured. She is without a car and has a loner until the end of the month but does not have a plan after she returns the car. I know this is a stretch and wanted to reach out to WL community to see if anyone has or knows someone who might be willing to donate a car. I would take care of picking it up and handling all the ownership paperwork. Even if you don't have a car ask your friends and family. It would be awesome if we could find a way to help her out!

I would like to keep this request from Jan if I can so don't mention anything to her if you know her or happen to bump into her.

Appreciate your time and consideration

  • Christian: Thank you for taking the time to help Jan. You should consider calling someone in development at Old St. Pat's Church. There may be parishioners willing to help.

I will spread the word. Thank you

  • That would be great. if anything does come to light please email me. cjsiegel514@gmail.com. Thank you for trying to help!

  • Just heard back from Old St. Pat's. They are going to check around to see if they have some leads. No promises, but they have a good network.
