Help us find a home for Chicago Food Coop

We are looking for a small or shared space to actively use two days per month for breaking down our delivery, a meeting, storage of three refrigerators, a top opening freezer and one intermezzo type shelving unit for the remaining time. Our budget is about $100 per month for rent.

Any leads would be really appreciated. The building we are currently located in will be unavailable to us anymore very soon. We are great tenants and can get you references...

Any leads would be really appreciated. The building we are currently located in will be unavailable to us anymore very soon. We are great tenants and can get you references from our previous location.

Center For Neighborhood Technology is our current spot, but they are moving. We've asked Dill Pickle and they are overflowing into another space and their new store won't be ready for ages. We've reached out to Goethe School, but haven't heard back for sure from Principal Kargas. I also contacted Darwin, but haven't gotten a response.

I'd love to hear from contacts at local schools and churches.

We are pretty awesome if I do say so myself as a member. Consider joining.

Thanks so much,
Kate

About us:

Chicago Food Coop is a food buying club made up of individuals who collectively purchase groceries directly from distributors. We have an advantage over the individual consumer because we can purchase goods at wholesale (discounted) prices and pass the savings on to our members. We strive to bring our members variety and value. Our grocery suppliers are selected to provide the items that members want and as a buying club the price we pay for grocery items is often even lower than listed.

  • You could also try St. Luke's Church on Francisco (ask for Pastor Eric). I work in the building and I know there are lots of companies/individuals who utilize their space. Not sure if they have the room, but couldn't hurt to ask!

  • Thanks Michelle! Just left a message.

False Alarm Fines

Anyone know if it's true that residential homes/units don't get fined for a false security alarm? I know that businesses don't get the free pass, but can't find anything that says residential addresses are except from the false alarm fine.

  • ht ...

No fine in Chicago. Burbs i hear do fine. Don't cry wolf though... They responded the 5 times in 4 yrs it went off and we ddnt reply to the company on time.

  • When I had my ADT installed 10 years ago. The installer and salesperson warned me that after 3 or more false alarms, I could expect a fine. Thus far, I have not received a fine. I may have had the cops come once because my visiting mother couldn't figure out how to shut it off but I don't even remember now.

Banfield Noooo!

For the love if God! Sitting in Banfield waiting room for over hour and when they get me in the room their gonna shame me into bankruptcy. Please someone give me a vet in logan area that is good and reasonable please

  • I've been using Family Pet in LP for several years. They are indeed quite expensive, but have received very good care from multiple vets..

  • I second Village West. The staff is super friendly and Dr. Silverman is honest, he won't try to talk you into things you don't need. They are really good at getting you in right away too, when my puppy was sick, they squeezed me in the very next morning. Also, they offer a multi-pet discount. (I used to be on Banfield's monthly payment plan, and every single time I brought my cat in, they tried to guilt me into adding on services, or at least it felt that way.)

Logan Theater and TIF Money?

Am I wrong or did the Logan Theater/Mark Fishman get about $1MM in TIF money to renovate (courtesy of our Alderman)?
If that's the case, how and why do they think they can raise prices to $7? Haven't we already paid for these renovations?

  • Let me stir this pot a bit. Anyone know who is the single largest recipient of TIF dollars? I'll help you out, it's the Chicago Public School District with $350 million committed so far through 2017.

  • There was nice news story on WBEZ about this and they said there are two main issues with TIFs: underreporting and lack of transparency to those who pay for them.

Regarding underreporting, those who receive money have no reporting on the results of the spending. Did the beneficiary actually make measurable deliverables on their request? Is there a system for payback if they don't deliver on their request?

Regarding lack of transparency, the show talked about never being able to see the separate extra payment on property tax bills for those who pay into TIF districts. You'll never see how much extra you pay toward a TIF as opposed to if you didn't live in a TIF designated zone.

Good Bucktown Bakery?

I find myself in the market for 80 assorted sandwich rolls to sever beef tenderloin and chicken salad on for a wedding shower. Can my neighbors recommend a bakery in or near Bucktown/ Wicker Park that is known for their bread? I know several with great sweets but I've never bought this much bread before! Thanks! :-)

  • One more for Red Hen. It is delicious and not cheap though. They sell those rolls to high end restaurants. Of course, I can't remember which ones. : (

  • I second Anne's bakery on Chicago and Leavitt. You can smell the fresh baked bread in the alley every morning!!

The interior is big, and it looks great. I was impressed with the level of detail of every aspect. Shadi and his mother, who was also there, were very polite. They allowed me to take a few pics inside, including a menu written out on a dry erase board.

The place looks great, and just about ready to open. Even the kitchen was set up. The menu looked pretty great also. I'll post a few pics here for you guys to check out.

I understand and respect how they are financing this, but after 6+ years of build up, I've lost interest. Maybe my kids can enjoy it someday. I guess all I was hoping for is to not travel so far for Sultan's Market, but when i hear 'tapas' style, I'm assuming it won't be like that.

What bugs me the most about this whole thing is the fact that they blabbed about opening this place before it was even remotely close to being done. If you know you're going to fund this project with cash only, it should also follow that you know the timeline to opening will lengthen. Don't get people all riled up and excited, only to delay beyond reasonable expectations - it diminishes interest.

As much as I sound like a grump, I'm hoping for the best - I love Sultan's and the owners seem to be great people.

Apparently the code states you have to be 30 FEET from a stop sign or traffic signal, however, I can't actually find the code. I plan on attempting to contest it. This just seems like some BS way of creating revenue, especially when there are no signs posted or markings on the curb and there are and have been several cars parked just as close to the stop sign or in the same exact spot for years, and I've never seen a car ticketed ONCE. I'm mad. Anyone have any suggestions for anything I can do to be productive? Otherwise, I will just stew in my anger and out $60. Construction "site" at 3060 W Armitage Ave

I live in the building there and the dump and mess that has been left from construction for the bank on the other corner of the street is insane. Anyone on here work for the city? I am positive they do not have permits and have no right to be using the extra land as a place to store their junk. I'm tired of the noise and tired of looking at it! Something has got to be done. That, on top of the graffiti all over the place, is driving me nuts!

  • Any word? Construction still happening. S#it pit is still there. Now our building shakes, it looks like they are going to build something next to us now. Oh joy, more noise.

  • PR

They had a permit last year to build a building identical to yours on that site. I assume that's what they are starting. Lets hope it doesn't drag on for two years like the construction at the other end of the block.

Does anyone here want to see our Alderman put up signs on existing poles that say "Respect Our Community, Do Not Litter" ? I saw these signs in Andersonville when I lived there and I believe they actually helped. Right now, I'm not sure the folks here are aware of the benefits of not dropping their trash on the street or in front of their houses.

Also, the Chase grammar school should start a no litter campaign in their early grades. It just takes a guest speaker to come out for 40 minutes once a year. That's how I learned not to litter back in the 70's. Since then, the awareness seems to have dropped off.

I'd love to here if anyone has discussed or thought about solving the litter problem in this area.

  • As an parent of a student at Chase school. I can say that they have a great anti litter program. There are several garbage cans outside the main entrance and surrounding the school that are emptied on a daily basis. The students are reminded not to litter on a daily basis and they have a clean up days.

I had to 'make and take' a red wiggler bin to get full credit for Master Composter degree and the winter had them 'especially happy' in the basement so I have two huge bins ready to share. You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

$20 to rake the yard?

In the end we gave him much more than he asked for (fair's fair) but he didn't know that and never stopped working. He also turned down a root beer I offered him when he thought it was actual beer and only accepted when it was clearly just soda.

Through May 2014, Elevate Energy has partnered with a certified building performance contractor to offer a 20% community discount on air sealing and insulation – the best efficiency measures to keep your building warm in winter and cool in the summer.

To be able to offer the 20% discount Elevate Energy needs at least 10 buildings in a neighborhood to move forward with efficiency upgrades in May 2014. With the buildings located near each other, the contractor can complete more jobs in less time at lower cost, thereby passing the savings on to owners.

What building owners can expect:
• Free energy assessment valued at $400-$600
• No-cost assessment report and work scope proposal
• The best financial package available (we do all the leg- and paper-work for you for free)
• Construction oversight and quality assurance at no cost

Owners interested in moving forward with this work should contact Senior Energy Analyst Jackie Wiese (Jackie.Wiese@ElevateEnergy.org) directly no later than April 25, 2014, to ensure ample time to schedule the assessment and complete the upgrades. We encourage anyone in the neighborhood who is serious about completing improvements to fill out the free application. We can work with owner-occupants and owner-investors alike.

Visit the Elevate Energy website (http://elevateenergy.org/) for details on the 2-4 unit residential buildings program and to read about a building that recently went through the program in Logan Square (http://www.elevateenergy.org/energy-savers-success-story/).

Hit and Run on Logan Blvd and Sacramento?

At about 10:20 tonight, I heard a car screech to a halt and someone screaming. When I ran to see what had happened, I saw an injured man being loaded into an SUV which proceeded to speed off south on Sacramento. Several police cars followed. Anyone know what happened?

  • Hayek Not FDIC Insured | May lose value

I'm confused... that doesn't sound like a hit and run at all.

It's either the driver who hit the man doing the right thing and rendering assistance (depending on the injury) or a kidnapping, Bourne Ultimatum style.

  • Right. It didn't appear that the person loading the victim into the SUV was trying to render assistance. It appeared that his main interest was trying to leave the scene with the victim ASAP. My husband believed it was a kidnapping, but it didn't appear that way to me, either. It was bizarre and unsettling, which is why I'm wondering if anyone out there can fill in the gaps.

Nick had to fight them off alone while the owners watched.

After the initial attack, one of the dogs managed to get loose a second time.

One pit bull was white female, about 80 pounds, hanging teats, recently had a litter; the second, sex uncertain, white with brown and black spots on her back, with some kind of doggie backpack. Owners were two white males, heavyset, scruffy goatees, very short hair, balding, in late 20's to mid 30's.

We plan on attending next CAPS meeting about this, but wanted neighbors to be on the lookout.
