Pedestrian Stop Sign @ Oakley & Armitage

Who do I contact about finding out if the pedestrian stop sign at the crosswalk on Oakley, at Armitage, will be replaced? They tore it out to repave the road and now it is near impossible and very dangerous to cross the street there.

  • How about using simple orange plastic cones that run from between $10-$20 each? Scott could buy 20-40 of these for $800. Spray paint his name on them and place them in the center of the road on the cross walk. People who know how to drive will be alerted and...

Spray paint his name on them and place them in the center of the road on the cross walk. People who know how to drive will be alerted and slow down and people who don't won't stop for you anyway even with a proper sign. If the cone gets knocked to the side of the road the next person that happens buy can place it where it belongs. Here are some cones from amazon....

$1.32 million really doesn't go that far when it pays for infrastructure repairs throughout the whole ward, not just Bucktown, for speed bumps ($15 thousand for 4 speed bumps near this crosswalk), stop signs, park upgrades, street resurfacing ($97k to resurface Paulina from North to Bloomingdale, 2014 ward total about $1 million), alley repairs, etc.

The city has this info online.

Christmas trees??

I finally live in an apartment with very tall ceilings and am very excited to have a nice, tall Christmas tree this year. Any suggestions for where I can go in the area to buy a tree this year??

  • For the last several years I've bought my tree at the Farmer's Market Garden Center at 4110 N. Elston. It's a family owned, local business and their trees are gorgeous!

  • I've gotten a cheap tree at Fullerton and Spaulding and a pricey one at Gethsemane. The $60 Gethsemane tree held up much better (didn't fall apart when it was time to say goodbye). The Fullerton/Spaulding one dried quickly and was HUGE mess to recycle. Just sayin'.

Land of Lincoln Health Insurance experiences

Just curious if anyone has used Land of Lincoln Health Insurance since they opened up in the last year or so? They are the first non-profit health insurance company in IL in over 25 years and while their rates and coverage seem good, I'm hesitant to use them b/c I've never heard of them nor heard anything good/bad about them. Anyone have any feedback to share?

  • I use them. Only problem I had was administrative, not related to coverage. Ask my doctors have accepted it, but you might want to check to see if yours are covered first. I also checked to see if they covered all my prescriptions before I chose them. I will look at the healthcare exchange again before I renew with them, however, just to see if there are any new plans that are better than my current one (not comparing, just shopping around).

A father of a kid at my kid's school works for them. He was telling me earlie this year that they are building their insurance plans in collaboration with all the big hospital and doctor groups and was hopeful that's how they were going to be able to bring down costs. He also said they're going it because they won't be able to build a name brand like Blue Cross and that people do know their hospital and doctor brand more anyway. I did ask him about if the covered people outside of Illinois and he said they have some kind arrangement with a larger group of providers nationally.

Oh, one of the oddest things he told me is that they are required by law to open up their Board of Directors to any policy holder who wants to join. I don't think the average Joe understands the business enough to figure out how to run them.

i ordered some business cards and they're en route to this, my old, address. hoping to intercept them from the new mailbox owners in the event i can't get the post office to just leave it a local branch for me to pick up.

thanks. i know it's a long shot!

  • thanks for suggestions! this address is from about 6 years ago, so no more forwarding. i went by last night with a note & actually ran into the new tenants, who were nice enough to take my number & keep an eye out for my package.

ellie - my guess is you could drop them at the post office to return. or have you tried googling/facebooking the name? maybe they're still in chicago somewhere.

SOS at Animal Control

Animal control is completely full! because of this they will be killing many adoptable animals to make space. If you know anybody that can foster or adopt please let me know. Fostering is temporary and free. Please share this to your Facebook statuses.

  • Artist Girl, CACC Cat Transfer Team is the Facebook site re: the cats that need foster homes. CACC Transfer Team is the site for dogs. If you have any questions you can send me a pm. Fostering can get a little confusing bc not all rescues do things the same way, you will need to figure out which rescue is best for you. I have just started fostering and it has been absolutely wonderful, worth the effort many times over.

  • Jen

Artist girl- Sorry! I missed your comment earlier. Thanks for explaining Beth. You can't foster through animal control because it's a city shelter. Rescues will pull from there and you can foster through the rescues. As Beth said, different rescues have different programs for fostering.

I fostered dogs through One Tail at a Time and they were great. They provided me with a crate, leash, collar, food, and treats. I think the average amount of time you have a dog with them is about 2-3 weeks. The shortest time I had one was one week and the longest was two months (but that dog was crazy). They send you an email with the dogs they have that need foster and you can tell them which one you like. They have a partnership with Canine Crews so if you work all the time and feel like the dog needs playtime, you can take it to daycare.

I have never fostered a cat before but I know that PAWS and Treehouse are good rescues to foster through.

Thanks! And let me know if you have any questions!

Graffiti- should I be worried?

Our block (2500 palmer) is relatively quiet from what I can tell. Found this beauty on my garage today, already submitted report for removal and intend on working on removing it myself later today. Long message, anyone know what it means or should I be extra worried? Anyone know of recent activity in the area?
Thanks!

We have been in the neighborhood a little over 20 years and I would say this behavior comes in waves. I do recommend having a can of paint or graffiti remover yourself as it is best just to cover/remove these tags as quickly as you can. The taggers will get bored of your garage more quickly then and will choose a different target. Talk to your neighbors and work together to communicate about any tagging or suspicious activity.

As far as worrying...I wouldn't lose any sleep over this as it is random and nothing against you personally.

  • The police were aware of this at last nights Caps meeting.

Lost dog near Altgeld and California named "Louie"

Around 6.30am when I was out walking my dog a neighbor was calling for his dog, Louie (Louis?).

He seemed distraught, and in not shire if he's posted here yet. He described Louie as a brown / tan, very large pit bull. He lives in the apartments on he corner of Altgeld and California above Mops Beauty. I didn't get a name or apartment number.

If anyone has seen Louie, feel free to message me and I'll try to find the owner.

Keep a lookout for Louie, it's cold out there!

  • If you find the owner, tell him to post flyers all over the area right away-it can be very effective. Thanks for helping out.

  • I live nearby on Logan and will keep my eye out. Please let us know if he finds him.

  • Jen

I'll be on the lookout . Please tell him to check animal control every day if he can. They do a stray tour a few times a day

Bloomingdale Trail

Has/does anyone heard/know anything about the construction being done on the Bloomingdale Trail? Work hasn't been done on the trail near us (north of Bloomingdale and west of Western) in quite a while.

The opening of the trail was postponed due to the harsh winter. I'm thinking the opening is going to be delayed even longer due to lack of work.

About those EB Daily Digest Crime Reports...

Sometimes the crime listed is not readily understood from the description. The link below is to the Illinois State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Offense Codes. You can get the crime from the EB Daily Digest, then refer to the Codes for the applicable IL statute, then just Google the statute number found under ILCS Reference.

E.G., Deceptive Practice: Unauthorized Videotaping, 720-5/26-4.

Offense Codes: https://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/6-260.pdf

(The CPD CLEARMAP pages also attempt to define the crimes, but not nearly as well: http://gis.chicagopolice.org/clearmap/crime_types.html .)

Need HVAC

Greetings fellow neighbors-

Need of your expertise/advise on this matter. My furnace's circulating water pump is making a loud noise when starting and the noise continues while operational. Can anyone recommend a solution and/or reasonable HVAC technician?

Thank you, all.

  • @Morgan-- Love radiators. We kept ours, too, and did SpacePak for air conditioning. It is expensive, but there is no way that we wanted to switch to forced air. Rough estimate is ~$12,000 for a 1600 sf floor.

  • i am an hvac tech in chicago 25 years exp. the noise from your pump if it is a series 100 B&G is from the spring coupler between the motor and impeller housing. it is a reasonable repair. u can reach me at 773 988 2093 if u need assitance

Looking for People for a Regular Pickup Basketball

I am looking to start a regular pickup basketball game somewhere in the vicinity of Bucktown/Wicker Park/Logan Square/UK Village (basically somewhere in a near west neighborhood). I have a couple ideas on possible locations, but the most important thing is to get enough people on an email list to have at least 10 guys to run each week. Message me if you're interested!

  • Alright... seems like there's a decent mass of people wanting to play... could everyone send me your email address and I'll get a list going. Also, let me know if you have a day preference.. Thanks!

Did you end up setting up a game? If so, I'm interested in playing in it.

Share Christmas/ Sponsoring a child or family

Does anyone know of any good local organizations that have a share Christmas program; meaning any program where you are able to donate gifts, and/or sponsor a family/child for Christmas?

Thanks!

Need to rent or borrow a table

Hi there - I'm hosting t-giving for more people than I have table space for. I think I'll need one more table, ideally a folding, adjustable-height table that is as close to 6' long and 3' wide (seems most folding ones are no wider than 30"). Anybody know of a place to rent one table from? I could probably buy one for the same cost but don't have anywhere to store it afterward.

  • linda's flower shop on armitage at milwaukee rents folding tables and chairs for cheap

  • Loulu Me

FYI Card and Party Warehouse (Belmont just west of Pulaski) rents chairs and tables, and has lots of other great stuff for sale. When they had just a couple of the bags I wanted for shower favors and I needed far more, they ordered them right up for me no problem. Shopping local, not corporate is something to think about for your future needs this store meets.

  • NFT LS landlord and resident

i don't see much of a distinction, it's still an ad regardless of who posts it. how can you tell if the person posting is a tenant or a landlord? if you make exceptions that are easy to get around, you're left with no rule at all.

Another one gone

Was shocked and saddened driving on cortland by lotties and saw the bungalow at 1919 was erased from the map. As well as the building next to it (it looked like 2 empty lots, I was too busy going into shock). That is a big loss in the bucktown building diversity. I'm still mourning the loss of the bungalow at honore/bloomingdale 10 years ago. Very sad.
