Street Festival last weekend on Blvd. Or lack there of

What was this nonsense festival with no real bands, no local artists, no theme and no attendance. it is all car insurance stands and carnival food. This thing needs to be canceled or repurposed. Correct me if I am wrong, which I am sure someone will.

  • @BartShore: Yeah. It sounded intentional.

I didn't even think to involve the police because I assumed it was an angry homeowner. But we walked past the house and nothing seemed amiss.

I agree with Shizzam, musically it's better than most. Last year's fest was fantastic as I discovered the band Boombox and the east stage had the Brazilian flavor going on--gave it a nice edge. Lately the street fests has gone corporate with Star Events at the helm (Blvd Fest included)....

Every street fest is the same with Too White Crew, 16 Candles and Hair Bangers Ball and the vendors I never visit, except the beer tent. Also, long running fests like Retro on Roscoe was cool when there was vintage cars, now it's watered down with with the above mentioned formula. There are probably 3 or 4 I still attend that have a authenticity. As a 14 year resident of Logan Square it's nice to walk to a great music line up and feel a true neighborhood vibe. Enjoy it while you can before it becomes any other fest in Chicago.

Where do you browse?

Hello Neighbors,

I'm going to be renting out an apartment soon, and before you all pile on, no this is not an ad.

I'm curious where everyone searches for apartments these days. Craig's list all the way? domu? Flyers in the men's room of the Two Way?

Thanks for the input!

  • Deb Karp Humboldt Park

www.postlets.com puts you on about 20 free sites. zillow hotpads trulia padmappers etc. It should send you a separate link for Craigslist.

  • It depends on the neighborhood - in Berwyn, I use Craigslist, and it works great. Ads in the laundromats and restaurants also help. Downtown, forget it - Craigslist has been totally useless to me there. I ended up having to get an agent to rent it. The upside is that you get a properly done lease & background check. The downside is that you have to give up a month's rent.

Move out and withholding security deposit question

I'm moving out of my current apartment next week and have learned the new tenant is moving in the day after I leave. According to the landlord, their new lease starts the day after I move, which I presume would void my lease and payment obligations owed for the remainder of the month. Can anyone direct me to where in Chicago's Landlord Tenant ordinance it confirms I won't owe rent once the new tenant takes possession? I can't for the life of me find it but want to be armed with the proper info should it come up during security deposit return.

Thanks!

I'm a landlord and would never try to double dip on rent. It's unethical, but I'm not sure if it's illegal. I had one tenant give me two weeks notice and was freaking out that she needed her deposit for the new place. I told her to hussle and put up some flyers to help find a renter, and she did, and I did.. that's how landlords & tenants should collaborate. Be aware that your landlord is also required to pay you interest on your deposit. The city of Chicago has specific interest rates documented. Here's the city of Chicago's landlord / tenant page, along with a phone number to ask questions: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dcd/provdrs/afford_hous/svcs/request_tentant_landlordinformation.html

  • Thanks for the landlord perspective Brent. It seems to be worked out for everyone and I'm so far satisfied with the results. I hate that I had to call him out for the resolution after four years of a great landlord/tenant relationship, but it is what it is. Certainly helps that he knows I have lawyers for parents lol.

Upcoming Election

I just saw on the news that candidates for alderman can start circulating petitions today. Does anyone know who is all running in the 35th ward? Rey Colon is the current alderman. Is there anyone else running?

  • I've been moved (again) to the 1st Ward and I know Anne Shaw is running again Moreno..and she is WOW! Finally!!! Moreno's office doesn't answer or respond to message; must be too worried about plastic bags...
I sure wish there was a race against Rey Colon...let me know if there is...

What's a normal tolerance for rats?

I wanted to let my new neighbors know that, while the Lakeview neighborhood most certainly has rats, they are nothing compared to what I have seen in just the past two weeks since moving to Bucktown. The pied piper apparently stopped at Quenchers and never left. I routinely see whole families of them scurrying everywhere – in the streets, down alleyways, and through yards. Probably yours. I have reported the problem to 311, and contacted both Waguespack and Moreno about the issue (I live on the dividing line). Waguespack's office replied immediately and said they would notify rodent control about the problem. Moreno's office? Crickets. After a week of waiting for a response, my wife called the office and they said they could only authorize baiting our specific address because we were the ones filing the request. But baiting a single address is not likely to make a dent in the burgeoning rat population. Meanwhile, these fat creatures are not just on our property...they are everywhere. The official response from the city was, "We don't bait everywhere because people have different tolerance levels for rats." Admittedly, I had not considered this. And I suppose it might be true that some people are fans of disease-ridden rodents nesting in their garage, and seeking the comfort of their warm basement in winter. I am just not one of these people. If you are not one of these people, I encourage you to likewise contact your alderman, file a service request through 311, and keep your garbage on lockdown. Coming from nearby Lakeview, I was shocked to see the difference in rat population just a couple of miles makes. Yes, the city will always have rats...but like the heroin hippies camped out in front of the Target, it's time we tell them to move along.

  • Steve J -A Chicago original since 1968-

Ridding an alley of rats means cutting off their food supply.

#1- inspect all the carts in your alley and report any with holes to 311 for replacement
#2- gather neighbors to wash out carts with BLEACH
#3- use thicker plastic bags and tie them shut

now you have an alley cart scenario that doesn't provide ready-food for the rats and they'll move on.

I miss our local Cat Lady. She and her 15+ feral cats moved 10+ years ago. Ever since the rats have grown out of control. The explosion of new restaurants, bars, and buildings have only intensified the problem. The rats seemed to have grown immune to the poisons even when the city did baiting.

Again....Cat Colony I believe in my 17 years at this address is the only real rat solution but then you have to fight the cat spraying smell. If you are the lucky yard where 2 Tom cats decide to fight nightly over turf the spraying and noise followed by lack of sleep will make you a zombie.

If you choose to go with a Cat Colony you will need to become an expert in products that deter Tom Cats ! Might I suggest Predator Urine. Yes! you read that right. Just when you think you've solved your rat problem you get a cat problem and start purchasing products with Coyote Urine because you've tried all of the other off the shelf stuff. Some poor soul out there is squeezing coyotes for their pee then putting it powder form. http://www.predatorpee.com I kid you not this is the only stuff that works.

Just try your best to not become this guy: http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/aug14-scary-6319242/

Where you get so focused on taking out rats you freak the whole block out walking down the block with your pellet gun that looks like an AK47. (BTW-Pellet guns are ineffective. Yes we have tried and No this isn't my pellet gun pictured in the above link) BTW You will find yourself becoming this guy at some point.

Another solution maybe what the old guy down the street keeps saying we should do..."You have all gotten soft. Just offer a quarter for every dead rat a 10-15 year old boy brings you. That's what we did in the 50's, 60's,70's. Worked like a charm. Then the little S.O.B.'s had something to occupy them other then tagging, gang banging, and what not. It's a darn shame you don't let these kids have pellet guns." His words not mine.

Stolen Brooks B17 Black Saddle and Thomson Elite Black Seatpost

I locked my bike to the bike parking U Stand across the street from Irazu at 8pm this evening and returned at 11:30pm to a bike with one less saddle and seat post. So if you come across a Brooks B17 Black Saddle (w/ a scuff on the top near the rear) mated to a Thomson Elite 250mm 27.2mm black seat post (w/ NiteRider Cherry Bomb post) please let me know where you saw it.
I understand the chances of someone coming across are slim to none, and that it's my fault for locking my bike up outside, I just wanted to put the message out there. This also feels somewhat like venting...

This was back when it was rumored Wendy would not allow a band to play at this fest unless they played at her bar. Even food vendors were by my estimate $2 higher on similar items than last year and there were less of them this year which means there might be a lot of other fees being imposed keeping them out.
IMHO the Arts fest has ceased being something for the neighborhood and more for tourists who need some place to go other than Navy Pier. Is there any way of getting our old Arts fest back or has money interests totally taken over?

That's the end of my rant for now. :-)

  • Wow, that is great - I stand corrected in my comments which compared the the Bucktown Art Fest to some of the other neighborhood festivals. Thank you for the informative response. Much appreciated.

Suggestions for Hospice cat care while on vacation

We're committed to a 10 day overseas trip shortly and have recently gotten some news that our senior kitty is likely terminal (mass in intestines + kidney disease). She's eating almost nothing and ignoring the litter box. Does anyone have suggestions for how to keep a dear old kitty safe, fed and comfortable while we're gone? Taking her to a boarder is certainly too traumatic for her, but we're worried she may not eat for DAYS if not monitored regularly. Normally we have a sweet neighbor look in on our two girls 2X a day, but our old girl has special needs now. Any concepts? Good experiences? If we could change our trip we would...

Also be aware that just because they have good ratings on Angie's List, they may very well have an 'F' rating with the BBB.

  • Even the BBB is not accurate, I was cheated by a company with a great BBB rating, the bad rating hadn't caught up with them & I was the one who got stuck. Best bet is referrals. The best contractors I've had since then I found thru referrals and walking my dog around the neighborhood looking at works in progress.

Fall into sinkhole brings $2.27M verdict for mail carrier
By Marc Karlinsky, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin

http://www.chicagolawbulletin.com/Elements/pages/print.aspx?printpath=/Archives/2014/03/07/Sinkhole-Verdict-3-6-13&classname=tera.gn3article

A Cook County jury awarded a postal worker $2.27 million after he snagged his foot in a sinkhole on a Logan Square mail delivery route.

During the litigation, the City of Chicago admitted it knew about the sinkhole in the marked crosswalk at Altgeld Street and Kimball Avenue and did not repair it before Wantan Montgomery, a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, fell in.

In March 2009, Montgomery was pushing a mail cart and could not see the sinkhole as he walked over it.

He twisted his knee as he fell and suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He had it repaired with a bone graft and with two additional surgeries, followed by two years of physical therapy.

Montgomery filed a lawsuit against the city in 2009, alleging city officials knew about the sinkhole for at least six months and failed to repair it...[truncated]

Has anyone checked out the aldermanic remap? The 35th ward is now a overwhelming Latino district. This, ironically, is actually kinda bad for Rey Colon (who was one of the few who voted against the remap) because he's always sort of been an outsider when it comes to playing nice with the Latino Caucus in city council. I see a strong possibility of Rey losing to another Latino candidate in 2015. The 35th Ward was purposeful redrawn in an awfully contorted way so that more wards could be included in predominately Latino areas of the city so more Latino alderman can win. They put the growing white population of central Logan Square into the already very white 32nd Ward of Waguespack, but that doesn't actually change the overall political makeup of the council. I'm sure it will have an impact on the central part of Logan Square, perhaps?

As for @rogerparker 's comment about the city getting "whiter," sure, maybe in some areas, but the fact remains that the total white population in the city has actually declined since the last census and the 2014 gerrymandering reflects the growing clout of Latinos in the political arena. Most northwest wards, with the exception of the 32nd, have larger Hispanic populations than they did before the prior remap.

I think that means that you may be elected in the 35th from any ward that includes a part of what used to be the 35th if you've lived there since February 24, 2014 (and are a registered voter). You'd have to move when you won though.

"Micro-Apartments" Plan for Car Wash Across from Post Office

Neighbors -

A developer is asking for an upzoning from C1-1 to C2-3 for the old car wash across from the post office so he can build 56 "micro-apartments" on the site.

Apparently there will be a public meeting on the proposal on Wednesday - try and make it - 6:30PM at Haas Park.

More here:

  • Which ever way you are siding on this, it is my personal experience that the alderman gets what he wants no matter the logical, reasonable, and overwhelming outcry against. I can understand arguments for and against, but it's ultimately about the rich getting richer and the rest of us unsuccessfully searching for parking.

  • This is going to happen regardless of what the community wants. There is too much money involved.

No Parking! Loading Zone. Busted!~

Hmmm. I took this picture this morning of Dunlay's on The Square. Here is what I noticed, You can see the No Parking sign, Loading Zone, and in the reflection of the picture there is an Orange Jeep. This picture was taken at 9:30 this morning, and I just drove past here again..that same Orange Jeep is still parked there at 5:45PM.

My best guess is the Jeep belongs to someone who works at Dunlay's on The Square, they pay for the sign, but I don't think it is right for them to use it as their own personal parking space. This is pretty common in the area by the way. Today, I can document it.

Bolt Cutters - SAVE A TREE

does anyone have bolt cutters that could take off this pad-locked chain that is strangling and killing this tree? also, who is the artist that has the lock key?

logan blvd side of new wave coffee and nail shop about 3107 west logan blvd

  • there is a difference between art that is just put in a public space w/o consent of the property owner and art that has permission - such as the art pieces on Logan Blvd - have permission to be there. 'Art' put just anywhere w/o owner's permission is considered vandalism. I don't want anyone placing anything on my property w/o my permission.

  • The original posting was to have the chain removed (done, good call but the way). But, had it ONLY been a chain this discussion would have not taken place. Add a couple green blocks to that chain and there's now a 43 post "conversation/discussion."

Forwarding this post from Nextdoor website re: the California/Milwaukee SRO Plan Revision. According to the post, public input on the re-plan was not allowed, and this does appear to be a rather hastily planned public meeting on the results:

A developer is in the final stages of approval to build a 5-story 56 unit SRO in the 2300 block of California Ave (California/Milwaukee). The plans were first presented by the developer in April to the Greater Goethe Neighborhood Association (GGNA) in a public meeting where over 120 neighbors attended and the majority opposed the plans. There was a meeting on 8/11 between the developer and the zoning committee held at closed doors, which contradicts what the zoning committee had explained during the April meeting regarding these meetings being open to the public (see news here: http://dnain.fo/1zzNM00). As a result of this meeting, the GGNA zoning committee issued last week a recommendation to Alderman Moreno which had a positive tone about the project and only recommended minor modifications ignoring many of the issues raised by the neighbors in the April meeting (see it here: http://yhoo.it/1vK49qo). Yesterday evening the Greater Goethe Neighborhood Association (GGNA) communicated, via its Yahoo group, that Alderman Moreno is holding a community meeting on this project tomorrow 8/27 at 6:30 pm at Haas Park (notice here: http://yhoo.it/1q25UhZ). This was communicated with very short notice after news of the meeting came out in social media. The only way to voice your concerns about this development is attending this meeting. Looking for ESL Teachers

(We could use Saturday teachers mostly but there's still room on Tuesdays for more teachers as well!) It's not mandatory to be there each week--if you can make 8-10 classes that is great!

The curriculum is provided, so you do not need any teaching experience, and you don't need to know Spanish....

(We could use Saturday teachers mostly but there's still room on Tuesdays for more teachers as well!) It's not mandatory to be there each week--if you can make 8-10 classes that is great!

The curriculum is provided, so you do not need any teaching experience, and you don't need to know Spanish. If you do have experience in either, that's a bonus! But a willingness to pitch in and help out is what we're really looking for!

Don't forget the most important part... teaching ESL isn't just about helping to improve someone else's life--you will be amazed how life-changing this experience will be for YOU.

Please contact esluv@urbanvineyard.org for more information!

  • AMG

This is a wonderful program. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, please think about joining us. I've been helping for the past two years and it has been life changing!

Being a part of our community and giving back puts great energy into the world. We're all in this together so if you can help, please do.

I am looking for a space to work with babies and toddlers with motion, and music to stimulate their vestibular system, auditory skills, and promote strong growth and development. Would this space work for that? I just need a room, 15"x15" would be ideal.

  • Liane Free Range Office-Wicker Park's coworking space!

Glass Block Windows

While I love the natural light through glass block windows, I hate all the issues that come with them, including leaking water. With the massive amounts of rain this summer (horizontal rain for that matter) we have found ours to not be sealed very well. Same issue at a previous residence. Does anyone know someone to fix the issue once and for all, rather than recommending we replace with traditional windows?

  • We use Mason Master Schmid for our masonry/sealant. He gave us a quote on fixing our glass tiles, but we haven't done it in full yet. We've had minor tuckpointing and rubberizing around the tiles as a stop gap. Andriy has done several things for us and we'll use him when we do part 2 for our condo building. He's doing a job on Chicago Ave as well. Totally trust him. Give him a call for an estimate at 224-522-1260.

Interested in 'red wiggler' worm bins in the spring?

OK, I'll admit that the warmer weather got me thinking 'gardening' mode... You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

Hello Kittyhop! I would love to learn more about these wigglers and composting.. My back yard is in dire shape and really needs a tune up.

Not sure if it's too late this season, but any info, advice, worms, etc, is appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Hello Varagona,

E-mail me at KLH@mindspring.com and I send sent you back a whole-mail of information. These worms are kept in bins and produce rich!!! soil for gardens and pots. The are not native to us so they may not go directly in the ground of garden as they eat...

The are not native to us so they may not go directly in the ground of garden as they eat EVERYTHING that grows and produce rapidly. But I have 'bins' (cheap, easy) and maybe people have bought what they call the 360 bins.

But you can start out with a plastic bin and go from there and if you like it...you can 'invest'.

We can talk about a 'compost' bin as well. Never too late...

    Looking forward to your e-mail..

Student seeking employment

Hey, I was just wondering if there are any decently-paying jobs around that would work with a student's schedule? I'd prefer anything office-y or clerical, but I'm open to anything. :)

  • G

Was Sara on Paulina just being sarcastically funny? Anyway, I work for a retail bank and we have a few students that work as part time tellers as do most of our other branches,

  • Hello! I'm so sorry for not responding quicker! School has started and between that and my current job I have not had the time to sit down and formulate a response.

I truly appreciate the responses, wow! I will be contacting all the employment possibilities tomorrow on my day off....

Carmenza’s Day Care opening a second location in Logan Square — right behind Haas Park

Parents always seem to be looking for good daycare options, and Carmenza’s Day Care is *terrific*. Their new second location is great, as it’s right behind Haas Park — on the 2400 block of Washtenaw. I don’t want to post their phone number in a public forum, but feel free to message me if you want their contact info.

  • I can also vouch for Carmenza's if you need a reference. My daughter is on her last week there (been there since 3 months old) and now my 3 month old son goes there as well. Bittersweet!

  • Can i get the info please? arttherapistjenny@gmail.com

Thank you to the nearly 250 volunteers who signed up to help patrons, help artists, pour beer, pick up trash and so much more. We could not do it without you.

And most of all, thank you to our neighbors who are so supportive of our fest and its mission. Being in the neighborhood and park under a canopy of trees is what makes the Bucktown Arts Fest so uniquely wonderful (in our own humble opinion). We are so grateful to you.

After we pay for the fest expenses, here's what we do with all the profits from beer sales, tee shirts and other merchandise:

Next year will be our 30th year - and we could not be more excited. See you then.

Friendly Orange Male Cat at Albany & Wellington

I found a very friendly mature, somewhat chunky orange unneutered male tabby this morning hanging out at the corner and following me around. Does anyone know where he might live? I'd like to speak with the "owners" if possible. No ear tip. I went door to door. The few folks that answered didn't have any info for me. I was on a run, so I had no phone to take a pic. I went back to see if I can get him in a carrier to check for a chip, but he was gone. Any ideas where he might live? Thanks in advance...

  • TNR time?

  • Probably. Although, if caught, this guy is a candidate for foster. There's probably plenty of ferals to TNR over there, too. If you'd like to head the effort, I'd be happy to join you to TNR in that area...Let me know. Thanks!
