Stop Signs in Sauganash Park

Have you ever noticed the inordinate number of stop signs we have in Sauganash Park? Not only are they an inconvenience, they are an eyesore. I believe most are unnecessary. In the early nineties a ranking CPD official used his considerable clout with Streets & San to have them installed (he apparently had "a thing" for stop signs). Streets & San overreacted trying to appease the political heavyweight. I would love to see half of these signs removed, I don't care which ones, just take some of them away.

  • Neighbor Bob Life long Chicagoan, Forest Glen resident since 19

Forest Glen is the same way. On Forest Glen Avenue as you head north from Elston there are stop signs on the first four blocks. I know the intention is to slow the traffic down, but my observation is they have the opposite effect. Stand out there at 5:30 pm (or run or bike as I do) and you can watch the cars race from stop sign to stop sign. And then roll through them without stopping.

  • I don't think we have enough. None of the streets feeding into Sauganash Ave have any and there have been plenty of times that I've almost been hit while crossing with my daughter. People actually do walk around the neighborhood. If you think people are not stopping on them, can...

I don't think we have enough. None of the streets feeding into Sauganash Ave have any and there have been plenty of times that I've almost been hit while crossing with my daughter. People actually do walk around the neighborhood. If you think people are not stopping on them, can you imagine what it would be like if there were no stop signs? At least cars slow down. Do you want cars plowing through the neighborhood at 40 mph? Instead of thinking that stop signs are an inconvenience for cars, think about pedestrian safety. You know what's a eyesore - those streetlamps that are on all the streets east of Kildare.

speed bumps on Kedvale are necessary! So much cut-through traffic and a lot of speeders! Very dangerous for the children who live on Kedvale. I agree to many stop signs throughout the neighborhood.

Break in at our house

Hi everyone, just a heads up to be on the lookout...our place was broken in to yesterday on the 5700 block of N. Rogers. Being educators, they sure didn't have much to take away!

  • Diane -- Sauganash retired nonprofit executive

So sorry you had to go through this. We were burglarized over 30 years ago and got an alarm system. While not fool proof it slows them down or makes them think twice about which house to pick.

  • A reminder to us all that we should be vigilant of suspicious stranger(s). A simple call to 911 saying, "there is a suspicious person at XXXXXX" is all it takes. Alarm systems are good, dogs are better, but vigilant neighbors are the best.

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

Sauganash School - Feedback

Considering enrolling my child at Sauganash. I have heard very mixed reviews, mostly negative feedback regarding curriculum. Most say it's not "challenging" and that the administration turns a blind eye because it is a "nice" school in a "nice" neighborhood. Most parents say they have to teach supplemental material at home. Positives: clean school in a nice neighborhood with a neighborhood feel. I'd like feedback from anyone involved with the school.

CPSobsessed is a great resource. You should also attend a couple of PTA and LSC meetings

  • Thank you for posting this. I am also considering enrolling my child and went to the open house a couple weeks ago. I left with mixed feelings too. I didn't think you could attend a PTA meetings if you are not a member, but I would give it a try. They appear very involved in the school and fund the art and music teachers along with the computer resources (Chromebooks etc). While that is my only feedback, M, I'd be happy to keep the conversation going.

  • My friend's daughter goes there. They just moved to the area and this is her first year there. She is a teacher and so far, is pleased with the school.

Skunks

Those darn skunks are out and about already! Anybody know of any deterrents? I don't want to harm them, but, my dog was sprayed twice last summer and it was not pleasant.

  • Upon leaving this morning, I saw one in front of my house. I was kind of surprised because I thought they were nocturnal. Is this normal?

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

I've seen them early in the morning
