39th Ward Aldermanic Candidate Debate

On Jan. 22nd, the Indian Woods Community Association has planned a candidate debate. Alderman Laurino, myself and Joesph Laiacona will be present.

I look forward to seeing my neighbors and friends on the 22nd to hear and ask questions about how I plan to build a better ward and advocate for your interests.

More information on this debate here: http://chicago.everyblock.com/neighbor-events/jan22-indian-woods-community-association-39th-ward-candidate-debate-6619657/

Nice job at the Indian Woods debate. Of the 3, I feel your ideology aligned best with the 39th ward. Some of it made down right sense. Sitting in the back, I felt that Laurino planted her "volunteers", who coincidentally also work for streets and sanitation within the ward.

39th ward has been stagnant for years. Property crime is rising each year as areas to the south of us are changing. Police are too scarce, and are busy running from one end of the district to the other to properly service their beats. Airplanes are driving us from our homes.

Good luck! Two votes coming your way from our household.

39th Ward Alderman Debate?

Finally there's competition for the job. Anyone know if there's a debate in the works?

  • Robert Murphy local booster, active neighbor

Also, I don't know about Ald. Laurino's scheduling, but the invite for the forum went out to all candidates on Dec 13, so not really last minutes

  • Did anyone participate in Laurino's town hall meeting last night via phone? I learned about it last night after the fact. I didn't see it listed on the ward website and I didn't receive any email notice so I wasn't home to take the call. Did anyone participate? And did anyone receive advance notice?

Dr. Martin Luther King - "I Have A Dream" Speech

Every year on Martin Luther King Day I read with my family Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Last year I shared this practice with others (using social media) and got a huge response. This year, I do the same. The speech is copied partially below (EB has character limitations!). You can then click on the link to read the full text and listen to it (also available on YouTube). This year, I do the same. The speech is copied partially below (EB has character limitations!). You can then click on the link to read the full text and listen to it (also available on YouTube). The sound of it only adds to the power of the oratory.

If interested, I would suggest you read "Letters from Birmingham Jail" too.

So, read, reflect, discuss and then actively work towards our nation's continued need to achieve racial justice.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

I can't find the pictures I took, but several years ago I rode a bicycle between Selma and Montgomery, just to take a slow ride along the route.

The Edmund Pattus bridge hasn't changed, but Rt 80 today is a four-lane mostly divided highway. Back then it was a two-lane highway. There are signs posted where the two camping spots were located. The land is still empty, but they're just vacant land, not campgrounds.

There isn't anything noteworthy in Selma. It's like any other small town. Local restaurants, but McDonalds and Burger Kings too. I didn't see anything noteworthy about the march.

Someplace near Montgomery I got chased off the highway by a state trooper. He told me since it was a federal highway bicycles weren't allowed. I tried to point out to him that this wasn't a restricted highway, there were no sign postings and that bicycles were allowed. He offered to take me into jail and let a judge decide the next day. I declined, even though I knew if MLK has been with me, he wouldn't have given up so easily. I got off the highway (he followed me until I did), camped and the next day returned to the highway several miles down the road. Several other state police passed me but didn't stop.

I got done what I wanted to get done, but Rt. 80 isn't really the most pleasant place to ride a bicycle.

Dear Neighbors,

This morning the continuance hearing regarding criminal trespass to property against Arshad Thomas took place at the Cook County Courthouse at Grand/Central. Mr. Thomas had been granted this extra time from his original date to seek and retain an attorney, which he failed to provide today. The judge issued a new date of Tuesday, February 17th, at 9:00 AM in the same location.

Alderman Laurino, who was in attendance at court today, strongly encourages our entire community to mark their calendars and plan to attend the next court date. It is crucial that we, as a community, make a strong impression on the judge.

In preparation we also hope you'll take part in this month's CAPS meeting, where this issue will surely be discussed. Please note that the meeting time and place has changed. The meeting will now be held at 6:30 PM at the North Mayfair Church (Salvation Army grounds), 5020 N. Pulaski. It will also encompass combined police beats of 1711-12-13.

Please make the time to attend both events, if possible. Carpools are strongly suggested. Please help us spread the word!

  • Kathleen Board Member, Sauganash Park Community Association

Sorry, I forgot to mention the date for the CAPS meeting. It's Wednesday, January 28th.

Pro Bono Accounting for Registering a Non-Profit?

Hello Everyone-my very close friend has started an amazing school for learning language through music. She is currently trying to get 501c status for her organization but its too complicated to do on her own and very costly to get an accountant. Does anyone know of an accountant with non-profit registration knowledge, willing to do pro-bono work?
A little more about her organization:

Speed Limit Cameras on Foster

How can we volunteer to have Foster Avenue, between Elston and Kimball, set as the first area to test the speed-limit cameras?

This section of Foster is clearly posted as a 30 MPH zone, yet because of the large area of parks and little parking there is a very large amount of speeding down this street. It's a real threat to pedestrians, senior citizens, children, bicyclists, and other using the public streets.

This would be a good place to test the system. Speed limit signs are clearly posted along the route and new signs wouldn't even be needed.

  • Albany Parker Jane Addams Community Health and Urban Development

Ok so we all know about the graft for the well connected and the claims that this all has been "For the children" and the ridiculous light timings that could not be explained Well the facts are in and the cameras do not improve safety. They are all about the money. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/redlight/ct-red-light-camera-safety-met-20141219-story.html#page=1 FIVE HUNDRED MILLION in fines! How many lives has that affected?

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

The Tribune and Redlight stories are misleading.

They note that the number of T-Bone accidents have been reduced (which is good) but then go on to complain that the number of rear-end accidents have increased.

Rear-end accidents occur because of drivers driving to fast and following to closely, not because of the Red-Light cameras.

Slow down, keep your distance, and drive safely. Quit looking for someone else to blame.
