Christmas is over!

Seriously people-- please take down your holiday decorations! Deflated Santas... sagging snowmen... plastic candy canes... and OH the lights! There's even a house in my neighborhood with a Halloween banner still up.

Don't put it up unless you plan on taking it down in a timely manner. Do you need my help? You might get it--want it or not. 4700 blocks of Berenice and Grace-- I'm especially talking about YOU!

  • Unfortunately, I think the people who need to hear this message are not on this forum. The members here are generally community-minded and looking to improve their neighborhood. The folks who have their holiday decorations up year-round are oblivious and uninterested in the community that surrounds them.

  • Haha!

New Restaurant at Six Corners

Went to this new restaurant at Six Corners (on Cicero south of Irving Park) this morning and the breakfast was delicious and prices very reasonable. They're open everyday, 7am-3pm.

I am hoping to get a solid recommendation on a handyman. Would prefer to give my money to someone local, small and dependable. Any suggestions?

If you are looking to keep your money in the community then there is no better local guy than Steve Mancini from Jefferson Park! He is a very hard/smart working, honest and dependable single father who works for himself cleaning / repairing gutters, carpentry, paints and drywall/tapes, etc. I only wish that we would have found him 10 years ago! His rates are very fair and his work ethic is excellent! You can reach Steve at the1gutterguy@gmail.com and also at 773.507.4415. He is also on FB @ Best Price Gutter Clean. If you hire Steve - you will thank me!

Water main break

Was just curious, how many people have had water main breaks near them in the last year? I'd say within 2 or 3 blocks? If so then where? And how about people who took in water to the basements?

Got a Basement to rent?

Looking to rent a Basement or basement apartment that is absolutely clean and dry and ideally with high ceilings and that is absolutely private and secure. I am a realtor with a home staging business on the side, dedicated to helping my seller clients, and I need an affordable space to store my inventory ( some furniture and home accessories and artwork) I would ideally be able to hang artwork on walls. I'd be a great tenant.

  • Jen Baron JBaron

Aidan33- I am just looking for storage as my original post says, I have a home staging business and I need to store my staging inventory only. Ideal is a secure, private basement. $600 sounds reasonable, but I'm looking for something more affordable . Thanks for your post.

Adrian - would we able to bring in pallets?

Burgers and hotdogs are as Chicago as apple pie is American. So where is the best burger and hotdog place in the area?

  • I am in love with Phil's last stand (Ukrainian village ) for char dog and polishes...& Leadbelly on Irving Park for big burgers.

  • Try Ivy's 5419 W. Devon ave. Call in your order 773-775-2545 they'll have your order ready for pick-up or sit down and eat. They have the best Hot Dawgs around if your not in the mood for that hot dawg at the moment try there delicious Chicken Teriyaki with Sweet Potato Fries my favorite! Yummmm!

Water

I live in Old Irving Park in the area in back of Sabatino's. I discovered this morning that I do not have any water. Does anyone know what has happened, why or when our water will be turned back on??

  • KTD

Milwaukee Ave. construction required the water main to be shut down today (tuesday, april 8th) from 8:30am to 3:30pm. We received a bright orange sign on our front door last week announcing the water shut-off.

  • There were no notifications of shut-off received by anyone in my townhouse development. The water is back on now. Thank you for your response.

Spark Energy going door-to-door in Old Irving Park

I just had a conversation with someone from Spark Energy who asked to see my electricity bill to get my account number. After thinking it over, I sent her away without giving her my information.

I'm not exactly sure what Spark is trying to do or what service they are offering, but their approach was way too aggressive and unsettling for my taste. Has anyone else dealt with Spark? Are they legit?

I'll be doing my own research this week, but I'm curious to hear what my neighbors are experiencing.

  • TLo

This is one of those topics that comes up every other week....there has to be a way to link back to the previous thread (tho I just tried and couldn't get it to work).

Blaze-N-Grill

I haven't been yet, but amazing what the site of minivans and work trucks (with ladders) parked at your eating establishment can do for you. For me, anyway, at least. Now I want to stop in and give it a try: http://www.blazengrill.com/

That's a pro-tip to any new fast food place: have all buddies with work trucks w/ladders park in your lot during rush hour.

I've been there on several occasions and every time I do get the Italian Beef. Have you ever had the Italian Beef from Gumba Joe's in Park Ridge? If you have you will know what I am talking about. It is about one of the best beefs I have had in a very long time. It has a certain flavor that I just crave. I am happy they have opened, now I don't have to travel as far to get my beef when I get the craving. My friend has had the chicken platter and the chicken sandwich and both were huge amounts of food that he couldn't even finish. I took my boss there for a beef and he too liked it. It is not at all rubbery, it kind of melts in your mouth, there is no fat or gristle at all. And it doesn't have that taste of cinnamon like at Al's Beef and others. Now I need to go and try the burgers, however with Leadbelly opening tomorrow I doubt I'll be doing that anytime soon. I have NO complaints about Blaze-N-Grill at all, service was prompt and friendly, food very good and generous.

  • Yeah I don't like cinnamon in Italian beef or chili.

  • Belding Elementary School reviewed by a parent

Belding is a wonderful school and is a hidden gem in the city! The principal, Ms. Yutzy, is involved and present. She knows parents and kids by name. The teachers are wonderful and challenge my kids everyday (pre-k/1st grade). The parents group is warm, friendly and welcoming. We attended two schools prior in Lincoln Park and Bucktown but moved for Belding. We're here to stay!
