Early Voting Begins Tomorrow

To find the nearby voting place and any days/time restrictions, please click the link below. Vote wisely: the choice is either the maintenance of the old status quo, which earned us bottom state ratings, or voting for the change to restore our hopes for a better tomorrow. God bless!

It's getting late to have a debate over candidates but hector I am with you. I know several more people that are with you also.

Either way we are getting a tax increase.
    Rauner is a typical republican.
    Quinn is a typical democrat.

Bottom line: neither are good, Rauner is worse.

Sorry Minerva, I told you before we won't always agree. This is one of those times.

  • How can we as young people be free if our government wants to be bigger than it should be? How can we be free with a party that believes in higher taxes? Taxing us to death!

Do we want the big government that is transforming before our eyes to do our thinking for us? Do i want the freedom to make my own choices and keep more money in my pocket?

Im not being critical of either liberal or conservative. I am at a crossroad as a voter. Will I be freer with smaller government and more money to spend on me and not giving more to a government that is growing out of control?

Mandatory Water Meter?

So I just got an orange tag on my door from Professional Meters Inc saying I have to allow them to install a water meter or experience POSSIBLE water service termination..?
I can't find anything online about this other than what is online by the company, but it seems weird to me because the notice says they have been trying to reach me but this is the first I have heard of it.

I think I want it to be false and a scam but I can't tell. Anybody?...

  • Try calling the City of Chicago Dept of Water and talk to someone there (press 0), or call your Alderman's office. If the request is legitimate, they will be able to tell you.

  • I don't believe it's a scam. I remember someone telling me about it. You should call your alderman.

  • I didn't have time to call the city but I guess I should make time. Thanks, neighbors.

Meeting at Schurz last night

There was a good mix of residents and teachers at the meeting at Schurz last night, along with a few city officials and champions of the field proposal. My initial thoughts:

1. Although we were told otherwise, and Alderman Arena insisted over and over that this meeting was planned all along to happen now, we still feel that the meeting happened now because of pressure of neighbors after finding out about these plans. There is still a strong distrust.
2. We were assured over and over that if we agreed to this proposal, the park district would run the new park according to neighbors's wishes, would NOT be rented out to adult leagues EVER, and would only rent out to youth leagues during times that the neighborhood agreed too.
3. It would be a park. I doubt that it would run according to neighbors's wishes. Do any parks run according to neighbors wishes?

There was no TIF money allocated to that field nor do we lose money. Last night, I read the entire Portage Park proposal in regard to the new housing on Milwaukee, the businesses at 6 Corners and so on. It's to help new businesses, stimulate economic growth as well as, the housing and aesthetics.

2.1M was allocated to the Chicago Board of Education to utilize for Schurz. I'd like to hear their plans first. The roof was already finished, it very clearly wasn't for the field. They needed that money for the school and I want to know what they want to do with it?

I would also like to know what the neighboring alderman are doing to their area? In particular, Kilbourne Park since it’s also their money. We have so many parcels of land with X’s in our community, in disrepair, deteriorated and run down that I now understand why the field has been neglected although, it shouldn’t have been. But I’d like to know what area or business we’d be throwing under the bus if we utilize those funds for the field? Is this additional funding including the 2.1 given to CPS? Or are we just hijacking their money that they probably want to utilize for the auditorium and other things inside the school that are in disrepair?

We need more information to make an educated decision. We can also educate ourselves instead of repeating things that support our argument.

Now who will face Rahm?

Karen bowing out to heal from her brain surgery means Rahm just won another election. Can we start a betting pool? What will total voter turnout % be and how much will Rahm win by? We need to liven up this board!

  • @Rob...then why mention it? About 98% of all political workers in Chicago align with one or another sub tribe of the Democratic Party. So when you want to throw a barb you have to be much more precise or the affiliation is meaningless. BTW, in a parallel speech affectation foregoing the adjectival form, you could say there are almost no Republic workers. Which wouldn't be helpful without describing a sub tribal affiliation like RINO, Regular, or Tea Party

  • joanie Resident of Jefferson Park

Rob the elderly who want assistance going to the polls are identified during campaign canvasses assessing support strength. I've brought elderly to the polls in the past too. I've had a few surprises too, like a couple little old ladies who pulled Republican ballots after being given a ride claiming to support a particular Democratic candidate. It's all in a days work. Many of these senior citizens wouldn't be able to vote without being given a ride to the polls.

Does the above group still exist or have they changed their name?

I'm in Dunning Square/Ward 38 and don't have a clue as to which neighborhood organization I'd be categorized since I'm on Berteau & West of Narragansett.

Thank you

If anyone wants the same status quo, which is to get government controlled handouts, like min. wages, unemployment, food stamps, a substandard, yet expensive public education, offset with higher taxes and an increasing cost of living, then certainly Pat Quinn is your man. Pat Quinn claims to understand the common man, because Pat Quinn was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, listed in the top 1% of wealthiest towns in Illinois. He graduated from elite private schools like Fenwick H.S. in Oak Park, IL., Georgetown University, Washington D.C., and from Northwestern University. He is a devoted public servant with mission to protect our #48 worst run state status.

No Minerva, I want the government to be 100% behind the top 1% with the money (face it, mostly white and mostly male.) After all, it's about a world economy and until we bring more of the US population down to the economic level of the rest of the world, things just won't be right! Any WAY so on that public education thing. Why, 30 years ago before our beloved Ronnie RayGun started turning things around, the state paid an average of 80% of a college education and the student paid 20%. And NO private enterprises were raking in dough either in for-profit colleges or student lending! We have GOT to let business out of its financial commitments to its workers by filing for bankruptcy, but we CANNOT let those jobless college grads off the hook on their student loans when they file for bankruptcy because Rauner and Romney have sent the decent-pay jobs to Asia (where our government is paying to train the workforce.) Yes, this country is just going to get better and better as the rich get richer.

Meeting re Schurz field tomorrow Wed Oct 8, 2014 7 pm

This 'moderated' meeting may be spin for they talk and we listen but we will never know unless we get there. Please show your interest (whether for or against) in this renovation project by your numbers! The library is their gem room. I believe it was redone not that long ago. It would be interesting to see some of the other rooms that could use some help. Go to main entrance off of milwaukee ave. follow diagonal sidewalks to door. If you park on waveland be careful of the craters that they have refused to fix because of these 'other proposals' like closing it. This is your chance to be seen if not heard 7 pm Schurz library
