Consider fostering a dog.Chicago Animal Care and Control is 100% full!

Obtained from CACC Transfer FB Page

There were literally zero dog cages available for the strays, owner surrenders and confiscates the shelter is legally required to take in as they arrive. Most rescue groups that pull from CACC can only take as many pups as they have foster homes, adopters and financial support for. How can we get City, County to allocate more money and space for the pound? it is underfunded and outdated.

  • Good question. I don't know but its something to think about. I wonder how we compare to other cities?

Thinking of swapping out our small front lawn for a perennial garden. Advice?

Our front yard is quite shady and the small grass lawn has always struggled to survive. We're thinking of ripping it out in favor of a shade garden (hostas, ferns, sedge, hydrangeas, things like that). Has anyone done this? Have any advice?

We had so little room in front of our house that we did that section with nice bricks with a layer look effect. With a very large tree on city parkway blocking the sun from the front of the house all the plants were perennials and spring bulbs. Once summer comes we add in annuals for shade. I have a hydrangea however it's closer to the South part of front which faces west because hydrangeas need sunlight.

So our front garden first blooms with tulips, crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths and some ground cover with purple flowers. At that time the Hydrangea starts budding and Corel bells, live forever flowers and hostas and hostas begin to grow. We top it off in summer with annuals for shade and end of summer mums.

I love seeing perennials or any kind of flowers in front of houses!

She will give you great ideas for plants that will thrive in your garden and can also do soil prep (especially important for hard-packed parkway soil). She is a master gardener and former president of the Irving Park Garden Club

Well there you go mid 400s hello in 2006 you had homes or townhomes that started at 600000 by irving Kilpatrick that were a sham to begin with and the old cable building was replaced with homes half ended in foreclosure or bank owned properties. ..not good..

Moving Back to Chicago

Hi all!

Thoughts on living in Old Irving Park regarding safety? I've checked the crime blotter and it seems like typical Chicago stuff.

About me: I've lived in Chicago 10 years (left in August) and have lived in Uptown for 4 years 2005-2009 (totally fine, no incidents) and Portage Park from 2009-2014 but was actually robbed at gunpoint there near Chopin Park in "one of the cities safest neighborhoods" stated by plenty of news media outlets.

I'm fully aware that anything can happen anywhere in any part of the city, but just wanted a general consensus on the neighborhood from actual residents! Any areas to avoid?

Thanks so much!

Rainbow, the northwest side neighborhoods are usually a bit safer, but the biggest reason I'd say is that's where the largest concentration of Police and Fireman live. Edison Park and Norwood park are also where a lot of city employees reside (since they must live in Chicago if they work for the city.) It's as close as they can get to the suburbs without actually living in the suburbs. My sister lives in Norwood park and on her block alone there are 7 police officers or detectives. Next block over 3 cops and 3 fireman. 2 blocks over another 4 cops, etc. You still aren't guaranteed you will never get robbed or mugged, but if you look at crime statistics in these areas they are much lower than other areas.

well...

it's finally over. regardless of who wins and who gets to puff their chests out a little bit more over the course of the following few weeks, let's all take a super deep sigh of relief.

hopefully all of the passive, and not so passive, aggressiveness can slowly fade away and we'll carry on.

let's all cross our fingers and hope that who we want to win, does.. because even though both sides "know" who the winner is, well, we really don't.

sit tight, let's wait and see.
