Waveland Avenue at Milwaukee WILL be permanently removed if John Arena wins another term.

Why should I care about Waveland Ave, I live up here on Sunnyside? I care because the next move by Arena may be at my back door. Why should I care about Waveland Ave, I live up here on Sunnyside? I care because the next move by Arena may be at my back door. Why should you or I care about a 48 unit apartment building being built next to single family homes and 2-flats at Long and Argyle? Why should you or I care that a 98 unit low income housing complex for 55 year olds and up, has been built across the street from brand new $400,000 homes ( thanks for investing in the city, here's your Arena thank you) at Kilpatrick and Berteau? WHY?BECAUSE YOU MAY BE NEXT! All our neighborhoods need to stick together and get Arena out of office, before he destroys the whole ward, precinct by precinct! Where it really matters is in zoning, where your one alderman is king over all zoning matters in his or her own ward. No matter how much other aldermen may despise each other, they never vote against an alderman on a zoning matter in his own ward, it's called "Aldermanic Prerogative" . Your quality of life can change in a matter of months, if your alderman decides to change zoning near you. John Arena, not even sworn into office, but merely "Alderman Elect", told an entire neighborhood that was dead set against the low income housing project at Kilpatrick and Berteau, "IN THE END I'M THE ALDERMAN, AND IT'S MY DECISION" and no matter that the entire surrounding homeowners were against it, Arena approved the up-zoning. It's time for all of us to stick together, Arena's supporters like to call other neighborhood's resident's such as in Jefferson Park, "mouth-breathers", "unenlightened" make comments such as "it's already trashy up there" etc. I have never though of myself as being in a war with Portage Park, Old Irving, Independence Park or any other area; all these neighborhoods have played a role in my family's and my life. I will not succumb to the divisiveness that Arena's style of leadership has created.

  • From the Nadig, "Garrido said that the project would directly affect him because he lives in Gladstone Park and that he worked with local businesses to organize a petition drive that obtained more than 4,000 signatures against the lane reductions and moving the bike lanes."

Arena listens to his constituents after a petition is presented and published in the newspaper ONLY.

And why do you insist on calling anyone that likes low density single family homes and 2-flats "homophobic" "xenophobic" and "racist"?

    Where were these words used?

Talk about pandering

Well that's enough of me talking about me, I will stop and let you talk about me.

And silly me I thought the two mailers a day that have been stuffed into my mail box everyday. Funny thing is not one of the mailers touts any single positive thing that has been brought into the ward, only finger pointing and name calling.

“Relationships with negative people are simply tedious encounters with porcupines. You don’t have the remote knowledge how to be close to them without quills being shot in your direction.”
― Shannon L. Alder

  • Chuck,
How can Mr Garrido then stand associating with the TeamGarrido AllStars (Bob Bank, Tami, Carlene, Miss Colleen, J. Hathaway, etc.) who seem to have nothing to say other than Garrido will do what we tell him to do, you know, pledges and all.

    Keep up the good quotes.

Thank you, alderman Arena!

For all the businees you have facilitated bringing to,our ward, the beautification with art murals at viaducts, the continued listening and working for our community health and well-being! A great job! You have my vote gladly.

  • Kathleen McGrath Neighbor

    Dear Ellen,
Sorry for your bad experience. I have no experience that Arena has lied or broken promises. More business in our community, more beauty without using tax money. Obviously everyone does not always get what they want. All my experince with Arena has been positive in helping our community.
    Blessings

  • Beautifully said Kathleen.

What has John Garrido done to bring officers to the 45th ward?

After hearing the debates between alderman Arena and John Garrido and hearing their main arguments, my question is what has John Garrido done as a police lieutenant to bring more police officers to the ward since he works at the 16th district police station?

On his website he states "Portage Park is on the front line of this battle, and we need all the resources we can get to keep this and other ward neighborhoods safe. I know and understand...

I know and understand how the Chicago Police Department works. As alderman, I will demand that our community is provided with the necessary police manpower and equipment to combat these violent gangs and keep our streets safe."
http://johngarrido.com/issues/public-safety/

At his current position has he demanded more officers be brought to the ward? Many may say that is not his job, but when you google "What does a police lieutenant do?" you get
"As a police lieutenant you lead. You're the frontline commander of the police department. You pass orders from the top level of command to the police sergeants, who in turn relay those orders to the police officers and detectives."

He says he will demand more officers as alderman but has he done the same as a lieutenant? If he has not at his current position why would that change when he is an alderman?

Hello Neigborhood

Hello all,

My wife Rebekah and I just moved to the neighborhood. We bought our first house and are super excited!!!

  • Lynn OIP Resident / CPS Mom

Welcome, Tim and Rebekah. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in Old Irving Park, you might want to check out our neighborhood association. www.oldirvingpark.com. We have a monthly newsletter delivered to your door, weekly e-mail blast with activities, daily facebook updates, and monthly meetings. Oh - and a really active google group!

  • Welcome! I hope you like it, it's a great place to start and stay. You have come at an excellent time; the six corners area has been slowly turning around and filling in more vacant spots, you'll never know what new store or business will open up next. If you have any questions or concerns, this is a great web site to get support from your community. :)

"The lawsuit is politically motivated and the accusations are without merit, said Joanna Klonsky, a spokeswoman for Arena.

"This effort to score cheap political points harkens back to a kind of old Chicago politics that we should all have moved forward from by now," Klonsky said.

Neither Przyby nor her attorney, Sean Baker, returned phone messages Thursday afternoon."

Our 45th ward candidate, a police lieutenant who is also an attorney, Mr Garrido, has quite the history of spurious lawsuits.

  • Avast

Well the police and State's Attorney dropped the matter, so what do you think? And the fact that a group of people were there but no one corroborates her lie?

  • But that doesn't stop TeamGarrido from soliciting assistance from Mayor 1%'s floor leader's surrogate, MayorSQ, from dredging Mr Garrido's politically motivated stunts up again.

Facts be damned, TeamGarrido is campaigning.

Belding Elementary's field is not a dog park

My wife's a teacher over at Belding Elementary. Every morning I drop her and my daughter off for school. Despite the posted signs prohibiting dogs from being on the field, these owners are letting their dogs use the field to do their business.

If this is you, please stop. It's not a grass field. It's astro turf. Your dog's urine is not being absorbed into the turf like it would grass. What is absorbed is the urine smell. As a former aid working at Belding during outdoor recess I can attest to the field stinking of urine, especially in hot weather.

Kids play on the field before and after school. It's where they have recess and gym. Please be considerate of this fact and keep your dogs off the field.

I stand corrected Tom. Now that I know the field "belongs" to CPS, our tax dollars obviously did not fund its construction. We are simply paying the interest at above market rates on the debt used to pay for this essential piece of educational infrastructure. Since you have determined that having a dog run on that plastic grass is illegal, just go find someone to enforce the law and stop whining.

Preschool at St. Edward or St. Viator?

Hi neighbors. I know something like this has been posted before, but I'd like to see if there are any new/different responses. We are considering both St. Edward and Viator, and would like to get your opinions if you've had experience with either preschool program. Thank you!

The preschool teachers and aides are wonderful, nurturing people who help make the transition into school years a safe, fun and exciting experience.
The preschool kids enjoy time in the computer lab, library, gym and with the music teacher.
The new principal is a dynamic, motivated leader who has a great vision for the future of the St. Viator.
Finding the right school for your kids and your family is a very personal decision with lots of factors to consider. Good luck with your search!

Block party suggestions?

Hi there!

We're planning our 51st annual block party this year, and I was hoping for suggestions. The neighbors who normally do the planning have stepped down, and this will be my first year planning, so I'd like to make a good impression :)

For those of you who are familiar with the process, I have a few questions:

What bouncy house rental company do you use? How much do you pay?
What DJ do you use? What's included? How much do you pay?

Does anyone have any suggestions on fun things we can do? It seems like every year people tend to stick to themselves and their own yards. I'd like to encourage more involvement. Any ideas?

Thanks!

  • I think that the 2014 applications have closed, and they haven't updated the site for 2015 yet. It looks as through they release the new applications in April each year, so you can check back then or confirm with the alderman.

Thanks Mrs. L! I found the wording on the website to be a little confusing. I'll call and ask about it today.

Missing dog

My 13 pound Boston Terrier is missing! Female, black and white, named Delilah. She is not wearing a collar. I ran into a family who saw a young gentleman pick her up at Kenton & Leland around 6pm today. If anyone has any info, please call me Kathy 773-576-1921.

  • So sorry she got away Kathy. I saw that you posted on LDI. You may want to consider posting on nextdoor and craigslist for more coverage.

Prayers she finds her way back to you soon.

  • Delilah is home with me! A very nice neighbor took her in for the night until he say my posters that I had plastered all over the neighborhood this morning. I can relax now.
