Election update: Michelle Baert endorses Garrido in 45th Ward aldermanic runoff

Baert finished third in the Feb. 24 aldermanic race in the 45th Ward. The runoff is a rematch of 2011: incumbent Alderman John Arena vs. police lieutenant John Garrido. Both candidates will be trying to identify Baert supporters in order to ask for their vote. Baert received about 1,700 votes.

What's with the speed camera on Cicero just North of Lawrence?

Just after the bend, passed the overpass, is a speed camera. There is no park there, no school, and I believe there isn't even a crossing or sidewalk on the east side of the street. Not sure I understand why there's a camera there.

  • ccc,

City has a budget crunch from salting away all of the TIF money and selling the parking meters for $1B below value, police enforcement is expensive plus Mayor 1% would have to hire more officers.

Appropriate street design is a more cost effective way to convince you not to speed and get photo-ticketed. Over use of stop signs diminishes their effectiveness.

Newcastle is too wide to be a one way street, you'd expect drivers to speed as they perceive no reason not to.

Dinner for 40 Restaurant

A friend is looking for a restaurant space for her husband's 40th birthday. For next Saturday, for roughly 40 people. Another restaurant just canceled due to a miscommunication between the owners so she is scrambling big time.

We know Saturday is tough, but does anyone know a space that could handle that number? Somewhere here on the NW side is preferable.

Thanks!

Copernicus Long & Argyle

Question: A 48 unit apartment complex has been proposed for a vacant parcel at L&A. The zoning proposal, which is on hold, has created much debate. What is your view on this project and how would you gather input on zoning proposals in general?

Garrido: "The problem that we have right now is that there is no transparency. We have secret zoning meetings that occur who knows when and who knows who's ...in those meetings. And with that the community is not involved in the process until either the project has been leaked to the press or until it's so far down the road that it's just going to happen. So, my position will always be is bringing the community to the table from the very beginning. These plans, those projects would have been up on my website from the day they came in the door. So that way everybody knows about it. Now,in particular for this project, the community has already spoken: 1,500 signatures plus have come in against it. They don't want it. And density is not always the answer to economic development. People have moved to these neighborhoods because they want to maintain the single family home character of these communities. This isn't Bucktown, this is JP, GP, this is OI, IP & 6C. We're more like to like like EP than anything else. So, I've already signed an agreement that I would not upzone that property.

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question:
What is your view on this project and how would you gather input on zoning proposals in general?

What does John Garrido say?
"...we have...no transparency..."
Density is not always the answer
I've already signed an agreement...not upzone that parcel.

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? Yes,
Mission accomplished.

First a list of different varieties of pizza that I've tried and can vouch for … Pat's Pizza, Pete's Pizza #2, Trattoria Poretta, Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder, La Villa, Home Run Inn Pizza, Mr V's, Geo's Pizza, Pequods Pizza, Gullivers Pizza & Pub, Pizzeria Uno, Pizzeria Due, Gino's East, (one close to O'Hare Airport), Spacca Napoli, Forno Rosso Pizzeria Napoletano, Cafe Luigi, Piece Brewery & Pizzeria and, Marie's Pizza & Liquors, Colletti's, Dino's Pizza & Italian Restaurant, trio's Pizza, Phil's Pizza D'Oro. Try Malnati's thin crust, different from all the rest except Pizano's because it's another Malnati family establishment.

On my list of one's I've not yet to try but have heard good things about ... Art of Pizza, Antica Pizzeria, Pizzeria da Nella, Coalfire Pizza, Jimmy's Pizza Cafe, Pizza By Alex, Vito & Nicks (very far South).

All of these can be found on the internet with a search engine. OK, I've done my part. Get to work and post back with your opinions.

There are these two dogs who enjoy heading over to the local horse track to watch the horses run in practice. One day, the dogs are watching the horses and they notice a little horse, about 2/3 the size of the others, trying to run with them. The bigger horses are toying with the little guy, letting him think he's going to win, and at the last moment, they speed by him, winning the practice race. They do this for over a half hour.

"That's terrible what they're doing" one dog says to the other
"It is, and I can't stand to watch any more of this. I'm going over there to give those bigger horses a piece of my mind!"
And with that, the dogs head over to where the horses are. The dog goes up to the biggest horse and says:

"Look, I've been watching you guys! I've seen how you're picking on that little horse, letting him think he's going to win, but then beating him and making him feel miserable. It's terrible sportsmanship, and I think you should stop this immediately!"

The one big horse looks around, then looks at another of the big horses and says

"Get a load of this, a talking dog."

Political analysis, from the mind of a 4-year old

I recently decided to some real political research by showing photos of both Garrido and Arena to my friend's 4-year old daughter. Her responses:

To a photo of Arena from one of his mailers: "He looks like a dog, the kind with the long face, that sniffs the ground."

To a photo of Garrido: "He looks happy....(pointing to his mouth) That looks like one big tooth in there."

She also wanted to now if either of them liked My Little Pony.

What are Mr Garrido's plans for the ward? His current quotes are all about either looking backward (the 200) or saying that what the Alderman does is not good enough. Mr Garrido is all about transparency, yet he refuses to make clear what his other business dealing are or what financial entanglements he's been a part of or currently is a part of.

For example, David Sirota and Ben Joravsky report that Rahm's top donor bought stock in Marriott just before it was awarded huge Chicago contract. That's a hit on Mayor 1% http://pando.com/2014/04/08/revealed-rahm-emanuels-top-donor-bought-stock-in-marriott-just-before-it-was-awarded-huge-chicago-contract/

Does Jefferson Park business district need a multilevel parking structure either at this site or elsewhere?

Garrido: "Well, I think parking is important. I know that we like the idea that we want to make everything pedestrian friendly, and we want to have everybody walk and ride their bikes. While that's important, that's good, the fact remains, people drive. But I think that with any project, if the developer wants to put up a parking garage like what he was taking about there. Then, the first thing that needs to happen when any job comes into my office is I need the plans and all the information on the project. It
will immediately, right from the very beginning, be put up on a website so that way everybody can see it and everybody can be involved in a discussion and understand and know what is going on. Then we would have a community meeting about it. For me it's gonna be all about community first. We need to have the community right in the process from the very beginning so we get that input,so we get that feedback,so a developer doesn't necessarily waste their time doing something that the community isn't going to accept. And then the community can have a voice in that process. Unfortunately, a lot of the process that we have now it doesn't seem to go that way."

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question: Does J
P need a parking structure?

What does John Garrido say?
Parking is important.
Discount people walking and people biking.
Pivot to canned answer about zoning process.
"For me it's gonna be all about community first."
Diminish the existing process.

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? No.
Mission accomplished.

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

Bravo to Robert Murphy for getting 43% of the 39th ward!

Although he didn't win, this was a great showing and an indictment of "Marge".

Margaret Laurino 5,840 53%
Robert Murphy 4,740 43%

  • Reasonable advice from Bob assuming that there is not too much ill-will (ie. water under the bridge). Following there runoff, I don't feel that Bob's line of reasoning will apply to Arena and Garrido and their opposing factions. Kiss and make up is just not going to happen.

Afterwards she said,

The platter came with a gigantic grilled skirt steak, beans, rice, guac, and a quesadilla. The steak was probably one of the best steaks I've had in Chicago. It was popping with flavor and so tender it practically fell apart. The rice and beans were delicious as well. I probably only finished about 1/8 of the dinner. The portions are that huge.

My husband got the taco dinner, and for $12, he thought it was a pretty good deal. He got 1 chicken, 1 steak, and 1 chorizo taco. He said they were all pretty good, and the flavor of the beans and rice was excellent.

I will 100% be going back and ordering that steak, but next time I'll being 2-3 friends to help me finish it!

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Ruta - Forgot to mention the old water spray botle trick. Thanks for following through with that.

PC - I realize that BA is only 20% isopropanol. In fact I indicate that the alcohol content was diluted with water, but you specifically said that you "might try some cinnamon thrown in some rubbing alcohol", and rubbing alcohol is commonly 70% or 91% and that is the reason for my cautionary response. A dog might just smell whatever biting deterrent concoction is employed and turn away, but there is no guarantee that it won't mouth it as well and that is where bitterness comes into play but not with a high alcohol percentage. I realize know that you can get ALUM in the herbs and spices section of a grocery store, although it is a mineral and there are herbs that are bitter principles from what I understand.

  • If you are just joining the discussion, the BA we were talking about is Grannick's Bitter Apple and how to use it correctly, described up above in my earlier posts.

Downstate Illinois is draining state resources and it's all brought to you in part by our corrupt governor.

Alderman Arena - 80+ Business commitent

Someone told me that Alderman Arena was challenged to publish all the new businesses he opened in the 45th ward within 24 hours. Arena accepted the challenge and time is up. Rumor or truth?

  • Annabelle,
And yet Garrido's campaign is now going negative in addition to his surrogate's past rampant negativity.

  • How has it gone negative?

Love this.

So happy to be able to communicate instanteanously with so many neighbors on so many platforms - EveryBlock, Twitter, Facebook, NextDoor.

Please know that I am listening to all of you, including those who disagree. I value all your opinions.

There has been lots of things happening lately in the 39th ward race, including that I received the Tribune's endorsement and a poll administrator at the N. Park Village Admin building who works for Ald. Laurino was removed.

I'm happy to answer any questions you all have about these or other issues. Please feel free to reach out on social media, on my website, or by phone 773.710.8431.

The Coalition for Responsible Catholic School Planning has created an online petition asking Archbishop Cupich to re-vamp the planning process for the consolidation of four area Catholic elementary schools (now including St. Tarcissus, St. Cornelius, St. Pascal and Our Lady of Victory). The petition calls for launching a new process that is authentically collaborative and that respects contributions from parents and parishioners from the outset, instead of imposing a pre-determined solution and threatening financial sanctions on those who decline to participate. The plans is to expand this model to other parts of the Archdiocese, so even if your school or parish is not currently involved, it may be in the future. Please consider signing the petition and promoting the voice of lay people in any future planning for their schools and parishes. Here is the link for the petition:
