Elly's on Milwaukee

My wife & I stopped in a couple times and; long wait to get a menu, long wait to place order, long wait to get food and then it was luke warm at best. Eggs Benedict warm, bacon cold. Not impressed, stopped going. Cumberland much better.

  • Jenny G. Forest Glen homeowner

We really like Elly's. We've been about 6 or so times and have always had good service and thought the food was very good, especially their salads. Even when it's packed on the weekends we've never had to wait more than a few minutes. The only thing I would change about this place is the TVs with subliminal messages in the form of photos of their baked goods on rotation. Please play something else, anything else.

  • We've been to the new location several times. We are loyal visitors to the Ellys on Cumberland which, so far, we like better. We are going to give them a chance since they are still new and need to work out the "kinks". Cumberland has an overall better atmosphere. They...

We are going to give them a chance since they are still new and need to work out the "kinks". Cumberland has an overall better atmosphere. They need to add something to the sterile looking walls at the new location. VERY cold feeling. Service needs to be improved as well. VERY SLOW!!! There is some inconsistency as well. I always order the Migas Frittata. One time they forgot the meat. Next time they forgot the tortillas, another time they forgot the avocado. We originally went to the Glenview location until Cumberland opened up. Hopefully Milwaukee Ave will get on track and work with their staff to bring them up to par with their other locations. Just give them a chance!!

Arena Fund Raiser

Why isn't the alderman holding his fundraiser in the ward at some small business that could use a boost?

  • Kenji's 13th EB Account Yeah it's really me

I can honestly tell you I don't know anyone else who spends more of their paychecks directly in the Ward than the Arena's. I actually use that fact jokingly with them. It would drive me nuts.

I'll bet Cullerton is runner up. He's All Ward All the Time™ too.

  • Zoes mom working at home

Aren't there banquet halls on Milwaukee Avenue? They are in the 45th .. just saying ... we want to bring business and people here. Including the downtown money folks. I would think they could accommodate 100 plus people. I for one would have been more likely to attend that.

I was curious to know if anyone in the 38th ward was able to attend the FAiR O'Hare Noise Complaint tax appeal workshop earlier in the week? I will definitely be appealing my property taxes citing the jet noise and contamination to our quality of life. I was curious if anyone in my ward is able to give some tips learned at the workshop? I know the website says to provide documentation such as the OMP map of the new runway, recent published articles about the impact on the community, a drafted resolution or letter of support from Ald. Cullerton, and a copies of articles regarding the questionable FAA hearings and lack of/ false information provided to residents. I can also provide video or photos of the actual planes over my home.

Is there anything else that should be provided?
Is it better to appeal via the The Board of Review or the Assessor’s Office?
Has anyone had luck asking Ald. Cullerton to support them in this endeavor?

Any help would be appreciated! I would like to start the process sooner than later. Deadline is Sept 4th.

Looking for stained glass repair recommendations

I'm familiar with few stores nearby that do stain glass panel/window repairs. I have seen those in my travels. But I need recommendations from people who have paid for such repairs. I've done some stain glass panels myself - but I wouldn't touch this repair... Too tricky for my lack of experience. So I'm looking for an expert that will not make mistakes. Some pieces will have to be refitted (I have all the pieces) and the panel straightened out. Also, likely the framing is at fault, so the panel will have to be re-framed. Any recommendations for a good repair shop?

They mention on their website that they have some antique glass sheets. If you want the repaired piece to match exactly, that's important because some of the glass just isn't made anymore. (I've looked everywhere, and I can't find the clear pattern in mine anywhere.)

When I finally get around to getting my stained glass windows repaired, I'm taking them there. (Or a shop in Plainfield, which I imagine is further than you'd want to go.)

Fishing is one of my absolute favorite things to do, and since I eat fish or seafood 2-3 times a week, it would be nice to take a few home to clean and cook up. Does anyone here have a favorite fishing spot? Any insider tips on fishing local waters? I have only ever spent "reel" time trying for bass and pan fish up at our cottage in Wisconsin and spent my childhood fishing for cats, bass, and 'gills down South. I know there are pike, muskie, crappie, and other varieties in the waters up here though. I'd like to try for some of the bigger boys once in awhile.

I'll be attending the fishing derby this weekend at Busse Woods, and think it's a great opportunity to get a feel for the waters here. Anyone have luck over there? The Derby is taking place at Grove 25, but there are SO MANY other areas to fish.

Have a favorite spot? A lure you swear by? Please share!!

Chicago aldermen endorse higher phone fees

I just read this article and states "With a solid majority of the 50 aldermen signed on.." I have to ask if Alderman John Arena and Alderman Cullerton are apart of the "solid majority" to add yet another "fee" on the citizens of Chicago?

I'm sorry, but I know I'm no the only person who is getting tired of being nickle-and-dimed to death from the city I used to really love.

  • I know a month has gone by, but I'm pretty disappointed that neither Alderman Arena and Alderman Cullerton had the decency to respond to this post. We all know they are both on here regularly and to let a simple, honest question go is really disappointing.

  • Kenji's 13th EB Account Yeah it's really me

I have a peabrain, but even I wouldn't have expectations and then get disapppointed if some aldercreature didn't respond to some question on the everyblocks.

If I wanted Arena's attention I'd go to Ward night, tonight, between 5 and 7pm.

As for Cullerton, this post is in the EB area "Jefferson Park". Cullerton doesn't seem to subscribe to this area nor posts in it. Why would he?

I'm not sure what speaking to the owner or manager could do if you just found their food to be mediocre. I've been to plenty of restaurants where there was nothing particularly wrong with the food but it just wasn't anything I'd care to eat again. I will speak to someone if something specific is wrong with my food, like it was under-cooked, but not just because I thought it was "meh". I just choose not to go back.
Also, I didn't read anything in this thread that I would classify as "vicious". People are just sharing their personal experiences.

  • I'm disappointed. I do think the quality of their food had declined from where it was originally, but there were still several things that were worth going for and their beer selection was good enough. I loved grabbing a quick lunch there on work-at-home days and it was really nice to have a place in walking distance to take the kids now and again.

We remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago and we used American Flooring and Countertops in Niles for our kitchen granite. Typically with a minimum of 25 sqft, they have pretty good deal. They did a great job. Only hiccup was they wrote down the wrong sink spec. We ordered a single deep basin since it was a corner cabinet/sink and they wrote it up as a double basin, which is wider. We noticed this on the day of the install. The sales rep came out to verify the situation and once he realized that the sink was ordered wrong, he had new granite cut for the correct sink and they were back out within two days to complete the install.

If you are looking for a small amount of granite (less than 25 sqft) you may want to check out AMF Brothers in Franklin Park. We used them for our basement bathroom. They resell their remnants/cut offs. Only downside is that the selection can be limited.

We actually used Studio 41 (Pulaski location, talk to Sergey) for our cabinets. We purchased Cardell which are semi-custom. We caught them on a special and saved a ton of money. Great quality and construction.

The reason we split up our purchases was due to price. As a project manager for a local architectural firm I did an extensive pricing exercise soliciting numerous quotes based on our plans. At the end of the day we saved money by splitting up the cabinet and granite purchases.

A great place for them to camp out would be on Linder and Leland, where the fenced off lot is - they could hide behind there and nab a lot of folks!

Seriously, does the local precinct take any suggestions like these under consideration and/or should we filter it through the Alderman's office?

  • traffic lights were out yesterday at mile & foster. it was an absolute mess and dangerous. while I was waiting for my turn I saw 2 police vehicles go. they didnt even bother to get out of their vehicles to direct traffic. 45 minutes later I came back the same way and the lights were still out and still no police presence. assuming they didnt even bother to call it in. seriously....what is that about 3 blocks from the station?

  • Police Dept is down officers so they probably can't send the few they keep in the district to direct traffic.

Yes, your agenda is important but...

please, do not use your children and yourself to block the public sidewalk in front of a runner at full stride. Especially at 9pm on a Monday. I have a schedule and a pace I have to keep throughout my run and politely said, "Sorry, not right now." I do not deserve to have you scream at me down the block after I barely squeezed past your blockade. If you would like me to have a look at your petition, please bring it to my door or approach me at an appropriate hour when I am not moving at 7 mph and I will be more than happy to have a look. Appreciate it!

The saw is used to cut off the excess and it is then perfectly matched to the saw. With the fancy one you linked to, you need to add/subtract the distance from the edge of the base to the blade. With the homemade one all you do is line up your marks with the edge of the jig. These home made jigs are great if you have to cut something on an angle. This method also protects the material from being scratched by the bottom of the saw.

  • I guess some people will oppose anything. They are acting like it is a half-way house for sexual predators and gang-bangers.

House cleaners

Can anyone recommend a good/affordable house cleaning company?

  • Use an independent, if you want a deal.they usually charge per house, not per hour. The ones I have used that charge per hour are much slower and actually not as good cleaners either. So you pay more for less.

  • Mary Betterman Mary,works @shelter

Hello, I am an independent housekeeper . 25 yrs exp. and stellar refs. I am animal friendly as long as they are people friendly. Date Night

So rather than doing the same old "dinner and a movie" routine, I want to think outside the box for our future date nights. I figured our Everyblock community would be an awesome idea generator. So neighbors what good options for live music, comedy shows, other entertainment do we have here on the NW side? I am thinking we'll check out a performance at the Gift Theater and visit the new Sip and Paint. What else?

  • Susan Long-time Jeff Park resident

One of the best dates my husband and I had (if you can get away overnight) was at the Fireside dinner theater in Ft. Atkinson, WI. It is about 2-1/2 hours away. They have a gourmet dinner, a little shopping, and then some of the best theater I've seen outside of downtown Chicago. Then you stay overnight (Johnson Creek is a good place). The hotel right by the property was NOT recommended the last time I went. I really like some of the suggestions above, too--they show great imagination!

  • There's always a night out bowling as well. If you feel neither of you is very good, that just adds to the fun, You're sure to have lots of laughs.
