Hi there neighbors! We are looking to adopt a puppy next month and I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion or past experiences to draw upon to help me decide where to adopt. Here are a few facts about us:

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Thank you!

Six more weeks...

The illusive Chicago voter has poked out through its burrow and made it mark, calling for 6 more weeks of stuffed mailboxes and call bank calls.

  • It's the way the city works. When they WANT something to happen, they make it happen. Beg, borrow, steal, whatever. Full day K, free community college, whatever. When the city DOESN'T want to pay for something, they suddenly get broke and really, really wish they could pay that pension bill...but they simply can't.

Sometimes in the paper the exact same day are city announcements that they can't afford something AND that they just agreed to spend more than that on a different project.

  • I think the city should reroute some of the TIF monies into schools and other things.

Bravo to Robert Murphy for getting 43% of the 39th ward!

Although he didn't win, this was a great showing and an indictment of "Marge".

Aldertrack (http://www.aldertrack.com/) projected and reported on many wards that were anticipated going into a runoff. No one ever predicted that Laurino wouldn't be re-elected.

The elections ended, get over it. Give congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Murphy, and encourage him to stay active. We need more people who are active and willing to participate.

Elections are about disagreements. Now is the time to bring back agreements. I would encourage Mr. Murphy to keep in touch with Ald. Laurino, and to offer constructive criticism and suggestions.

  • Reasonable advice from Bob assuming that there is not too much ill-will (ie. water under the bridge). Following there runoff, I don't feel that Bob's line of reasoning will apply to Arena and Garrido and their opposing factions. Kiss and make up is just not going to happen.

The couple went back to her house, and after a few minutes the pair proceeded into Sandy's bedroom. When Harry walked through the door he immediately noticed all of these stuffed animals.

There were hundreds of them - stuffed toys on top of the wardrobe, stuffed toys on the bookshelf and stuffed toys on the window sill. There were more on the floor, and of course, stuffed toys all over the bed.

They cleared off the bed, jumped in, and went at it. Later, after the sex, Harry turned to Sandy and asked, "Well ... How was I?"

Sandy replied, "Well, you can pick anything from the bottom shelf."

He then asked if the bartender would tip the glass to his lips. The bartender did this until the man finished his drink. He then asked if the bartender would get a hanky from his pocket and wipe the foam from his lips. The bartender did it and commented it must be very difficult not to have arms and have to ask someone to do nearly everything for him. The man said, "Yes, it is a bit embarrassing at times. By the way, where is your restroom?" The bartender quickly replies -, "The closest one is in the gas station three blocks down the street."

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

What's with the speed camera on Cicero just North of Lawrence?

Just after the bend, passed the overpass, is a speed camera. There is no park there, no school, and I believe there isn't even a crossing or sidewalk on the east side of the street. Not sure I understand why there's a camera there.

  • Want more revenue for the city? Put a camera at Laramie & Sunnyside. There is a stop sign here. No one stops. Police cars go right on thru this sign as well as civilian cars. The city could make $$$$$$ dollars with a camera here. I watch this all the time. Counted as many as 50 vehicles in an hour that don't stop.
Adults trying to walk children to school at OLV nearly run ove

  • More police presence may help the situation ... but since the police are doing this as well, who can say if this would make the Stop Sign mean anything.

    Here's a real stupid joke:

There are these two dogs who enjoy heading over to the local horse track to watch the horses run in practice. One day, the dogs are watching the horses and they notice a little horse, about 2/3 the size of the others, trying to run with them. The bigger horses are toying with the little guy, letting him think he's going to win, and at the last moment, they speed by him, winning the practice race. They do this for over a half hour.

"That's terrible what they're doing" one dog says to the other
"It is, and I can't stand to watch any more of this. I'm going over there to give those bigger horses a piece of my mind!"
And with that, the dogs head over to where the horses are. The dog goes up to the biggest horse and says:

"Look, I've been watching you guys! I've seen how you're picking on that little horse, letting him think he's going to win, but then beating him and making him feel miserable. It's terrible sportsmanship, and I think you should stop this immediately!"

The one big horse looks around, then looks at another of the big horses and says

"Get a load of this, a talking dog."

The 200 Businesses That Have Closed in the 45th Ward While Arena Has Been Alderman

The long awaited list of the 200 businesses that have closed since Arena took office.

  • you guys still playing pattycake with this stupid thread already?

it's time to step up the game now that only garrido and arena are the only two left again.

Create some new content already you duds!

  • Jill♡,
Lack of focus: "...your writing is very hard to follow..."
Easily bored : "...bored me to death in the first 3 sentences...."
Impulsivity: unable to recognize the difference between opinion and fact

    Could it be ADHD?
    http://mentalhealth.about.com/cs/familyresources/l/bladd.htm
Think about learning to channel it into more socially acceptable behaviors.

I'd look to the past to see if a health clinic was among the businesses closed, but looking backward and being reactionary are TeamGarrido tactics.

I ordered the Tampiquena dinner and it was ENORMOUS! I thought it would be filling for the $23 price tag, but I had no idea that it would be enough to feef 4 people. The platter came with a gigantic grilled skirt steak, beans, rice, guac, and a quesadilla. The steak was probably one of the best steaks I've had in Chicago. It was popping with flavor and so tender it practically fell apart. The rice and beans were delicious as well. I probably only finished about 1/8 of the dinner. The portions are that huge.

My husband got the taco dinner, and for $12, he thought it was a pretty good deal. He got 1 chicken, 1 steak, and 1 chorizo taco. He said they were all pretty good, and the flavor of the beans and rice was excellent.

I will 100% be going back and ordering that steak, but next time I'll being 2-3 friends to help me finish it!

Way to go, Amigo Chino! You ROCK!

It is to begin in Eugene Park, go under Foster Ave, and 2 years and $45-55M later. empty into North Branch. State Budget

Newly elected Gov. Bruce Rauner announced in his budget speech that the Regional Transit Authority can lose up to $128 million in state funding, while downstate gains $120 million in capital projects. Yet we pay higher gas, property and sales tax than downstate Illinois while they reap the benefits of Chicago/ suburban taxpayers. Downstate Illinois is draining state resources and it's all brought to you in part by our corrupt governor.

During the past week, my office has received several calls and emails regarding a potential project at the empty lot on the northeast corner of Argyle and Long, across the street from the Jefferson Park Metra station.

I want to update you on the status of the site. Right now, there is no pending proposal.

Earlier this year, the owner of the land had proposed a 4 and one-half story, 48-unit development on the site. In late Spring, residents came to my office and expressed concerns about the project. I took those concerns back to the property owner, and, at this point, we are waiting on an updated proposal.

I want to assure you that, as with every other zoning change, any proposed zoning change must be presented to residents during a community meeting. I require that anyone seeking a zoning change send a notice to everyone owning property within 500 feet, and we plan those meetings for evening hours at locations in the community.

Once we have a pending proposal for this site, we will schedule that meeting.

  • I heard a new plan has been proposed. Any updates?

For the next seven weeks I'm going to try and take a different person out each day for the beverage of you choice - coffee, juice, beer, smoothies, whatever - at the place of your choice, to hear more about your experiences of this community and what you hope for for it and for yourself.

I promise not to be weird (beyond the regular person amount), pressure you into anything, or try to get you to do something. I genuinely just want to know more people in our neighborhood, to see if the church can do more to meet your needs. If you'd like to chat and get a free drink just call 773-775-3399 or e-mail revkardon@gmail.com to schedule. Either way, my prayers are with you.

Thanks and peace,

She said that she used to be able to do all of her Christmas shopping just by walking down the street (she lived on Higgins, near the park). She mentioned 4 or 5 department stores, many restaurants, and NO transportation terminal. From what she can remember, the area residents were told that building the terminal would bring tons of people and their money to the area. I asked her how that turned out, and she replied, with a sly smile, "Go take a look downtown."

I'm fascinated with history, and particularly local history. I'd love to hear from long-time residents about what used to be along Milwaukee in Jefferson Park, and where these places were. Was Ideal Bakery always the way it is now? What used to be in the corner building across from Hoyne Savings on Lawrence/Milwaukee? Seems like it must have been a pretty fancy joint at one time.

So they pick up a small rock, and toss it in. No sound. So they get a really big rock, heft it over to the hole, and toss it in. Again, no sound.

So they come across a railroad tie. Now I don't know if any of you have ever been up close and personal with a railroad tie, but they're huge. Anyway, so they toss it down the hole.

And then, out of nowhere a goat comes running and jumps in the hole! "Wow. That was really weird," one says to the other.

A short time later a desert farmer (he grows sand or something) comes walking up and says, "Have you guys seen my goat?"

"Oh, no," says one guy. "It was really strange. I don't know how to tell you this, sir, but your goat just came running out of nowhere and jumped in this hole."

"But that's impossible," says the farmer. "I had him tied to a railroad tie!"

A Man died and went to heaven. When he got to the pearly Saint Peter told him that new rules were in effect due to the advances in education on earth. In order to gain admittance a prospective heavenly soul, he must answer two questions:

1.Name two days of the week that begin with “T”.
2.How many seconds are in a year?

The Man thought for a few minutes and answered…

    1. The two days of the week that begin with “T” are Today and Tomorrow.
    2. There are 12 seconds in a year.

Saint Peter said, “OK, I’ll buy the Today and Tomorrow answer, even though it’s not the answer I expected. But how did you get 12 seconds in a year?”
The Man replied, “Well, January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd,etc…”

Saint Peter lets him in without another word.

Catalytic Convertor Stolen 2/19/15

Hey all,

Just a heads up to all the neighbors out there. My catalytic convertor was cut and stolen off my car last night 2/18 between 11pm and 8am on 2/19. I am near the cicero and montrose intersection. So you all may want to keep your eyes open and occasionally peek out your windows throughout the night and observe any suspicious activity.

Funding will be in place this spring for major renovations to the Jefferson Park Transit Center, 4917 N. Milwaukee.

The CTA plans to spend $25 million on upgrades and updates to the station, which serves more than 2 million riders a year on the Blue Line, UP Northwest Metra line, and a dozen CTA and Pace bus routes. About $5 million of the funding will come from local Tax Increment Financing districts.

Plans have not been fully developed. I look forward to working with CTA and Chicago Department of Transportation on a community driven process to guild this important transit investment.

The station was built in 1970 and served as the terminal of the Blue Line until the extension was built to O'Hare. Improvements are expected to include replacing canopies and walls, replacing lighting with energy efficient lighting, replacing stairs and escalators, and installing art to make the station more welcoming.

The CTA has not scheduled the start of construction. Watch http://ward45.org for updates as we learn of them.

  • the article linked to by T&C mentioned the existing facilities. I remember the restrooms in the subway stations being available to the public.

  • The latest on self-cleaning, hands-free, auto-timed public transit restrooms being piloted in Atlanta:

    http://www.citylab.com/commute/2015/02/a-hands-free-self-cleaning-bathroom-for-transit-stations/385549/

$100k to install. Although I would agree that there should be more restrooms open to the general public, the transit station may not be the spot, unless it was turned into more of a public market space. I doubt that the CTA would move forward under current budget constraints, unless the commuters who would be using restrooms pay the cost of maintaining them.
