City of Chicago: Integrys Electric Aggregation Program

I'm aware there has been much discussion regarding this program, I originally opted for the program and a year later later opted out. Yesterday, I received a letter from Integrys stating that if I don't opt-out by January 30, 2015 I'm automatically re-enrolled. I was surprised by this auto-enrollment, interesting.

  • That is a good point, there may be additional fees from Integrys that push your bill higher. I was strictly focused on actual supply charges.

  • Why did the city even do this? Seems to me there has not been much difference and it's more trouble than it's worth.

Long-time residents of Jeff Park, what used to be on Milwaukee Avenue?

We had a neighbor over this past Saturday, and she was regaling us with stories of what Jefferson Park was like when she a teenager back in the early 60's. She said that she used to be able to do all of her Christmas shopping just by walking down the street (she lived on Higgins, near the park). She mentioned 4 or 5 department stores, many restaurants, and NO transportation terminal. From what she can remember, the area residents were told that building the terminal would bring tons of people and their money to the area. I asked her how that turned out, and she replied, with a sly smile, "Go take a look downtown."

I'm fascinated with history, and particularly local history. I'd love to hear from long-time residents about what used to be along Milwaukee in Jefferson Park, and where these places were. Was Ideal Bakery always the way it is now? What used to be in the corner building across from Hoyne Savings on Lawrence/Milwaukee? Seems like it must have been a pretty fancy joint at one time.

There was also the Trick Shop on Carmen a few feet from Milwaukee Ave. It sold hundreds of gags and tricks that attracted both kids and adults. Fake dog poo, itching powder, caps, super hot gum, hand buzzers and more. Just a great place! Around the corner on Milwaukee were the Music Shop, where the owners were also band teachers at Beaubien, the Schwinn Bike Store, Hecks Catering and the local neighborhood newspaper delivery center where kids could pick up the papers to be delivered once a week. There was also the Brown Cow on Elston Avenue where Carmen intersected. At this intersection was also Kohler Stadium, a large parking lot where neighborhood kids played baseball, so named after one of the nearby residents? Roberts Square Park hosted free outdoor horror movies in the summer after dark. The park also boasted a large, very high all steel 2 sided slide and teeter totters. There were school stores on several corners nearby Beaubien and an IGA store near the Northwestern Train platform. A pedestrian tunnel allowed access to Milwaukee avenue, crossing over the Kennedy Expressway.

  • And the original site of Moy Lees Chop Suey joint was on Milwaukee Avenue just around the corner from Gale Street.

Park/Speed Camera on Lawrence @ Cicero

This camera is a joke! The park that it's supposedly protecting is behind the car wash on a side street and is not accessible to Lawrence Ave ! The camera needs to be moved to Lavergne where there is an actual park. I lived on the south side of Lawrence at Lavergne and its nearly impossible to cross the street. They put up the "people crossing signs" in the middle of the street and they were immediately run down. Kids and adults alike can not cross here. Move the camera.

Rats!! Jefferson Park Grill CTA Terminal

There have been 2 incidents of rodents this past week (01/26-30) The 1st:
While walking from the CTA, on the north end of the terminal, at the 'Jefferson Park Grill', a rat 6" long was sitted on the stair stoop as I neared it disappeared, inside I guess. Incident 2: A lady bought a paper from the Sun-Times man and replied "I just hurried out of that restaurant (Jefferson Park Grill') I ordered and sat down, as I waited a rat ran over my foot, I screamed and told the grillman what I thought and left! I believe this place should be inspected or shut down. I can't get a hold of Arena, as usual.

    (a) Any person operating a bicycle or motorized pedal cycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under the following situations: 1. When overtaking and passing another bicycle, motorized pedal cycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction; or 2. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway; or 3. Reading your reference, it seems the bikes can take a lane temporarily. The Florida case cited had the cyclist taking the lane for an extended period as he didn't feel safe riding to the right on that particular Florida road.

The problem on the Milwaukee Speedway between the Metra viaduct at Jeff Park and the Elston intersection is that excess traffic capacity allows the drivers to speed as they perceive that the 30 mph posted limit is arbitrary. Drivers proceed at a speed that they feel is safe based on all conditions. I've seen multiple delivery vehicle on the speedway illegally parked in the sharrows. This forces the bicyclist into the speeding traffic.

It's the Board of Education handpicked by the Mayor to hamstring the public education system that chooses what kind of school is in your neighborhood. You don't want 50 schools to close, making your children go thru neighborhoods with people as intolerant as you, necessitating police presence for safe passage? Too bad, this is what you get says the BofE!

There is someone in the ward sounding selfish and exclusionary to me and that's you, Carlene.

You advocate economic and housing apartheid: "No, density does not bring economic success: Wealth does. That is why Cabrini Green did not bring in stores (bad schools, no safety); but when replaced with expensive condos, stores opened." Enclaves of the exclusively Wealthy are just as destitute as enclaves of the exclusively poor.

I knew someone who lived in public housing in its early existence in Chicago. It was an appreciated step up from where and how that family had been living. When the city decided to pack public housing with almost exclusively poor for solely political reasons (that's what the white "community" wanted), they doomed the promise and experience of good public housing. I would submit to you that this economic stratification you prefer affects negatively all neighborhoods.

People who live in studios spend a greater proportion of their wealth in their neighborhood than any of the people in wealthy suburbs. This is why the middle class that you grew up experiencing in being hollowed out by growing income inequality.

Does anyone know where I can find the laws of being allowed a "fixed" handicap parking area in front of your house? Is it legal to have this space if you OWN your home AND have a garage that you park in EVERY night? I have a neighbor who had these signs put up in front of his house. He parks OUTSIDE of the "allocated" handicap area and when his company comes he will move his car to his handicap spot. At night he parks in the garage. The area is almost enough to park TWO cars. He has never liked anyone parking in front of his house and I think this is an attempt (that is working thus far) to prevent others from parking there. Any help, links, or advice is welcomed.

39th Warder - when I had and legitimately needed my reserved spot, I paid for its installation and had to pay annually to renew it. I also called the city when I no longer needed the spot. If memory serves me, a physicians signature is required once a placard expires and renewal is requested - and no reputable doctor is going to perjure himself and be subjected to a $1000 fine plus loss of his own drivers license.

Now, I have to hunt for parking like everyone else. A "lady" across the street obtained a reserved spot because she caretakes her sister who is handicapped. She repeatedly parks outside her reserved spot in order to save the spot for a tennant she likes and then pulls back into her reserved spot when that other tennant comes home and pulls into the saved spot. Gets my goat because parking is difficult around here but I'm told it's a public street and she can park anywhere she wants. That is a loophole that needs closing.

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Stinky basement foul smell moving through house?

I noticed a smell in my basement a few weeks ago. I really just thought it was a dead mouse / rat since we have that issue going on. So I have been looking for a dead decaying rodent. No luck.

I read on here that the smell may be coming from the floor drain pipes? Can anyone give me more information. The smell is starting to reach the living room and kitchen in the past weeks. Thanks

  • O M G

p-trap is below the wash tub. It holds water in it so air doesn't flow from the drain pipes in the floor up into the basement. If the p-trap becomes empty in a week it's probably leaking at it's base. turn the water on in the sink for a minute. Put a bunch of toilet paper right under the p-trap. Come back the next day or two and see if the toilet paper is wet.

  • Mmm easy enough. Thanks!

Jefferson Park Transit Center To Get $25M Renovation

The $25 million renovation of the transit center at 4917 N. Milwaukee Ave. — which includes stops for nearly a dozen buses, the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line and Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line, is expected to include an improved bus turn-around, new canopies, lighting, escalators and stairs, officials said.

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150123/jefferson-park/jefferson-park-transit-center-renovation-get-5m-from-tif-districts

The Renovation will be funded in part by $5M from the Jefferson Park and Portage Park TIF Districts.

During the station renovation, a new crosswalk will be installed across Milwaukee Avenue, Brugh said. Plans for the crosswalk have been in the works since May 2013, when 45th Ward residents set aside $125,000 of Arena's discretionary budget for the project.

  • There have been more than a few times when I've seen a rat here and there crossing over the railroad tracks upstairs by Metra. The problem has not gone away. Can someone please take ownership and fix this problem please?
