Parking on Elston and Foster

Does anyone know why signs went up this morning saying no parking 9am - 4pm from Oct 1 - December 31st?

  • When they appeared on our street they wound up relaying the gas lines.

  • There's a LOT of construction going on around here. When I saw the title of this post I was hoping it was maybe in reference to the folks who (somewhat recently?) started parking on the south side of Foster west of Elston reducing Foster to a single lane, backing up traffic to at least LeClaire during rush hours.

A higher density development that close to a public transit and Metra hub makes sense for those lots. The ten story tower proposal certainly was a non starter but three to four stories with ground floor retail fronting the sidewalk is way better than another suburban type strip mall on that site when there are already businesses struggling in the area.If they're developed as R2 single family homes who wants to buy a house fronting on a major arterial street? There's got to be a way to find a happy medium between competing visions because those vacant lots are an eyesore and wasted tax generating potential. Parking for the Copernicus center does need to be addressed though.

  • 'the center brings visitors who patronize area restaurants...'

What 'restaurants'? Gales Street, McDonalds and Popeyes? All have parking and there's a garage already. This isn't the Cumberland Park and ride. It's a community.

If there's anyone in the neighborhood who would be interested in splitting up trips to TSC in Carpentersville, I'd be happy to discuss. If we could get 2 or 3 of us in the neighborhood to take turns, we'd only need to make the trip a few times a year each.

Anyone else have chickens? Even if you aren't interested in the TSC share, I'd love to hear your stories!

Who Do You Call for Methane?

There is a metallic kind of smell in our laundry room and also in my 'garden apartment' aka basement, especially when I use my bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans (that draws air in from anything that's open while it exhausts air). I have always thought it to be just old pipes, but perhaps it might be sewer gas and a health threat. Would you call a plumber to check it? I know methane detectors exist but I sure don't know anybody who owns one!

Thanks in advance and I hope the jokes are mild!

  • Cindy G Good neighbor

Just a thought: A metallic smell from using the fans might indicate a problem with the fans themselves - some part getting overheated because it's wearing out or working too hard, or perhaps something electrical brewing. There's a website called Inspectapedia that has checklists for sorting through and diagnosing household odors. Good luck sorting this out.

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

Good thought, Cindy. Pretty logical. I think I would like you for my oncologist. Or cardiac specialist. But we did eliminate that, kind of unscientifically, by following the smell around. It's coming from the drains, and also it's a metallic smell, but not an electrical metallic, something hot, overheated.

@Portage! You weren't snippy at all! What are you thinking!

Work crews have closed eastbound Lawrence from the Kennedy Expressway east to Cicero to work on a $20 million sewer project which should help alleviate some of our local basement flooding issues. Local traffic will be able to get through to the Kennedy Expressway, but the eastbound lanes will be closed to all traffic at Lavergne. Additionally, Lawler southbound from Lawrence is closed to prevent cut-through traffic. The westbound lane will remain open.

Allow extra time, as traffic will be heavy in the area impacted. Please respect our neighborhoods by following the designated detour, which is south on Milwaukee, east on Montrose, and north on Cicero.

The closure will allow for the construction of a 230-foot drop shaft that will tie local sewers directly into the Deep Tunnel storm water management system. The closure should end by the end of November. This work should improve sewer drainage for thousands of homes in Jefferson Park.

  • Portage Patty 30+ year veteran of da hood.

I'm grateful that this information was released weeks ago. But the signage on Lawrence seems to be pretty useless. LeClaire has been turned into a major street as people detour around the closure. Was this the plan ? I'd betcha that all that traffic on a side street will result in the expense of rebuilding it. Plus I can't imagine a steady stream of vehicles is attractive to the people who live nearby.

  • " ...improve sewer drainage for thousands of homes in Jefferson Park." Now put up a copy of the engineers' map showing the boundries of the benefitting area. A map had to be the key basis for the $20 million Return on Investment decision. Its development was paid by tax dollars and should be completely public information.

  • "Lawler southbound from Lawrence is closed to prevent cut-through traffic. The westbound lane will remain open"

Funny how they shut down a street with 10 houses that no one uses but are allowing cut through traffic on Ainslie and LeClaire. I have been calling the alderman for over a month! We can't even cross the street because of all the traffic! Unbelievable... Maybe they will close off LeClaire and Ainslie when someone gets hit by one of the hundreds of cars or semis speeding down RESIDENTIAL streets. What a joke...

  • From above link . . ."If you wish to rent to Section 8 Voucher holders, you should inform the local Housing Authority of the availability of your property and also indicate in your advertising that you welcome Section 8 Voucher holders. Ultimately, it is the voucher holder's decision whether or not to rent your property. Of course, as the landlord, you would screen the Section 8 voucher holder just as you would any other prospective tenant."

I remember before we moved that Gene's Sausage & Deli was supossed to move into the space Krakus had on 4700 block of Milwaukee. Well we was down for a funeral last week & went by there but it was still empty. What's going on there?

Well to be fair, the Gene's in LS serves a different demographic. Up there that Gene's markets prime aged beef and also has a killer rooftop restaurant. Can't get that on Belmont Ave. To me it's only the same in name not product selection.

Prowler on Leclaire Ave.

Yellow bicycle, mid-20's, short-cropped hair, white male, at our mailbox, holding a flat parcel so boldly that my wife thought was his. She innocently made conversation when he explained he was looking for a neighbor who might have a dog for sale?!? Parcel was a delivery I was expecting, and the dog talk was probably to learn whether we had a dog in the house. Reported to police. We live in a "safe" neighborhood but one block over, someone has been stealing American flags. Go figure.

  • Taking a flag (or a plant for that matter) off someones porch is stealing which is against the law. Do flag takers have a limit on how much they are willing to break the law? UNSAFE.

  • Johnny Portage Park

Littering and texting while driving are also illegal. Both occur frequently in the neighborhood. It doesn't make me feel as if the neighborhood is crime-ridden and dangerous (although the texting is very unsafe).

Aluminum Chimney Liner.

My chimney needs tuckpointing in a few areas. I had the whole chimney retuckpointed (chiseled out old mortar) four years ago. My HVAC guy recommended a chimney liner. The house is 62 years old (no fireplace); gas heat. Question; Do you think it is worth investment. Approx. $600 (aluminum liner; not insulated).

  • SusanM Portage Park

I would put in a stainless steel liner rather than aluminum. Worth the higher price in longevity and reliability.

  • Ed Edward Old Norwood park

You already got stiffed by your HVAC company. Adding a liner is part of installing a 80 plus furnace. Your chimney is deteriorating from the inside out with out one.

I am afraid the tree could come loose from all the water build up and possibly fall into lamp post and cause a serious hazard. Someone came out about three months ago and marked street and sidewalk, and put some little flags in ground, but nobody has come out to fix problem. My neighbor said the Ward office has been contacted several times with the only response being, "it is on our work list". Does any one have any suggestions on how I can get this issue quickly addressed?

Little Intruders in my home

Sorry I didnt know what to put this topic under
So my house has a visitor aka a mouse. I am wondering if other residents in Jefferson Park are having the same problem. I know a few weeks ago we had a huge mouse come in but that was because we had the basement back door open for fresh air (so much for fresh air) for a short period of time. If you can tell me if you have had these problems recently or in the past and tips to remove them. Thanks!

And Ill be searching my home for any new entry ways as well.

  • FourthGen Part of Portage Park since 1906

I've been told (don't know from experience) that if you suspect a hole is an entry point you should pack it with fine grade steel wool. The rodent ingests and sometime later dies from internal bleeding. But I agree with other posters that IF you can provide care and love to a cat that is your best option for prevention as well. The rodents can smell their predator and usually won't even try to enter.

I've been here for 20 yrs and never had a problem until this summer. There was a rat that would crawl into my yard from my neighbor's, then run into the alley. I was especially concerned because we always saw it during the day. I had already called the alderman's office to complain about a couple of apartment buildings that would consistently leave their garbage can lids open (with food falling all over the alley) which I was afraid would attrack rats. Rodent control came out several times but will only bait if they find holes. They won't go into a yard unless they have the owner's permission too. They finally baited a hole in my neighbor's yard and several others in the alley. Unless people keep their property clean (especially garbage and dog poop) it's a never ending battle. Not enough manpower to deal with all the requests, but the alderman's office and the city were very responsive. They didn't just take my call and add it to a list. You do have to be persistent and call when you see the rats. Last one we saw was wobbling around like he'd eaten the poison, so my husband took care of him and we haven't seen one since. I'm sure they're around, I'm just not seeing them. Nicely asking my neighbors to stop feeding the rabbits helped too.
