Our condo water bill doesn't help us save water and money

I am a new condo owner, God help me. We pay our water bill in common, from monthly assessments. I am a new condo owner, God help me. We pay our water bill in common, from monthly assessments. I've been forced to help our Board, as you too will be if you ever buy a condo, and to look at the water bills, and it eventually dawned on me that they are enormous! So, after pointing this out with some wonder, I was given the job of investigating, and the water department took a moment to look at our bill, our readings, and so forth, and commented that every time (save one) the meter had been read in the last six months, a code indicated the water had 'been running,' and that that particular code usually meant there was a leak somewhere.

This information regarding a code does not appear on the bill or on the online account. If I had not called, and if a particular question had not triggered the response with the information about the code, I'd have been--unenlightened.

Of course now we are on a mad course to find the leak, and anyone who has ever lived in a condo full of senior Polish retirees knows how much better the scene is than anything HBO could imagine.

But here's the thing: this leak has been going on for a long time. And we had no way to tell. It shouldn't be like that. The water bill should contain any codes the meter reading finds, so owners have a fighting chance to rectify any leaks, right? And another piece of information that we could have used is some kind of comparison of our usage with similar sized buildings. That way we would have known that our January bill was way out of line.

I don't know what I want. A hearing, sympathy, if you know somebody who knows somebody, couldn't they get this done in the software that generates the water bills? A promise from the alderman that this being a terrific idea he'll make sure it gets done?

I feel really really bad for wasting water, and I want to help make sure others have enough info to stop water waste (and money!!!) ahead of time. What is to be done? (Lenin)(he had water bills)

  • I think the MeterSave program is only for houses and two flats.

  • re the bb's, they tried one procedure that didn't work, so they had to heat her apartment to, I believe, 120F for a few hours, done. Luckily they didn't get into my unit, but mgmt. inspected twice, each time before treatment.

I invite you to join the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition, a citizen-led initiative that gathers democratically. We are a rapidly growing coalition of citizens and civics on Chicago's NW side and near NW suburbs. We oppose the increased air traffic, noise and pollution over our homes, schools, yards and playgrounds that resulted from NO REAL COMMUNITY INPUT in deciding the new O'Hare flight patterns. FAiR supports jobs and our regional economy. O'Hare - Yes! Plans and planes without your voice being heard - NO,

FAiR seeks a real voice at O'Hare to secure an equitable distribution of takeoffs and landings, day and night, east and west, and using all existing runways including the diagonals. As a neighbor, resident and fellow citizen, I ask you to join FAiR at www.fairchicago.org. Sign our online petition and report your noise complaints (can be done directly through our website too). Internet provider....

Hello...I have clear internet and was told that in November they are closing...it appears that Sprint will take over but not merge with them. Anyway, I have Dish TV and contacted them to see if they would set me up with internet services...they said they do not have internet services in my area. So, what to do? Sprint has the attachable internet services, however, I would rather use the modem and connect via wifi all other devices without having to deal with alot of problems...I am hooked up and no need to bother with it...but that will end soon. Any thoughts....? Would be much appreciated.

  • robin in WRP Feelin' Feisty

Our clear tower was decommissioned last August, so I feel your pain! I was unable to find another portable internet service with unlimited data. We would up going to comcast. We started with 25 mbps for $30 a month (our own modem and router), guaranteed for 12 months. A few months in, they offered us 50 mbps + broadcast cable + HBO for $40/month guaranteed for 18 months, with a free cable modem. We accepted the offer, didn't hook up the cable, and run HBO-GO through our roku.

If anyone knows of recent vandalism on Lockwood ave please notify me on here. Thanks!

The fact that there were no reports of feline respiratory illness in cats doesn't surprise me. The vets don't do PCR test when you show up with a cat with respiratory disease. And when they put down a cat with pneumonia - they don't send a sample for testing either (and that's the first stage of testing for most cats, owned or feral). So how would they know?

What they will do is - they will implement the testing procedures now, and in 2 weeks we will know something. Same way as with the dog influenza. They found out in 2 weeks. 2 weeks is not a good response time.

Allexa it can take a week or more to identify certain pathogens, viruses etc in humans. Vets are doing a pretty good job. I think we are lucky that some vets actually took samples and sent them out. IVet clinics send out for many different tests because maintaining an in house lab to test for all these things is cost prohibitive. Before you heap all the blame on vets many pet owners refuse more testing because they don't want to spend the money.

We don't know if this virus is affecting feral cats because they have no owners. Our cat is an indoor cat so he could only catch this virus if we or our dogs brought it into the home. We have kept our dogs away from direct contact with any other dogs and we don't go to dog parks we are also avoiding the regular parks so hopefully our guys won't catch this. I know if one our pets became ill at this point we would gladly pay for the testing and if my vet didn't offer I would ask.

When we bought our 90yr old house, we had 9x9 tiles in one room which had been carpeted over. Like you, I talked to several asbestos removal companies and all said there were no issues if tiles were intact. But we wanted to re-carpet and add in a drywall partition with a door. Decided to play it safe and get everything removed, down to the original floor so we (and future home-owners) would never have to think about the asbestos again. One asbestos contractor even gave me tips on how to do the work myself (I'll admit, I did think about it), but I decided to get it professionally done and disposed of (the law has specific requirements for asbestos disposal). I requested quotes from 4-5 companies (all including the $400 air quality testing done at the end by an independent environmental company). Some quotes came in within $100 from each other, others were about $800-$1000 more. Finally went with Brennan's Environmental Services, Inc.. They showed up on time, sealed off the area, set up the air vents, got in the white suits with respirators, etc and went to work. It took the better part of the day, but they got it all done, had the air inspector out there and took care of the tile disposal. I received the air clearance report in the mail about 2 weeks later.
I went back and forth a lot about a large-cost item like this, especially since it wasn't an immediate health safety issue, but in the end, it was really worth the moeny to get it done professionally (especially seeing those guys in the suits taking it seriously) and to never have to think about it again.

  • I don't know of any specifically. I suggest reading a few online reviews of inspection companies in your area. It is probably something to look into sooner than later if you are worried about it. Good luck! http://www.kirbyenvironmental.com/Services.html

(Colleen Murphy) There is plenty of sidewalk space for pedestrians and there are already bike lanes. When you considering how many walkers, bikers and drivers there are on the street then we should make it for cars more than walkers and bikers. Ryan-you also have a financial interest in this because our services may be used and you will make money from planning.

The above excerpt makes what follows about "Tunnel Vision" more relevant:

The Chicago Complete Streets Guidelines, pages 117-118
http://www.scribd.com/doc/151423612/Complete-Streets-Guidelines discusses Tunnel Vision: as speed increases, peripheral vision decreases, which is illustrated in Figure 38.

This referenced Streets.mn blog article further discusses this narrowing of vision as speeds increase and proposes a lower urban design speed and speed limit. http://streets.mn/2015/04/02/the-critical-ten/

Watch the 15:00 video, a major vehicle intersection in Poynton, UK. It illustrates a concept about slow and steady movement and shared street space, with a side of urban revitalization:

timemark7:30 "...the most important thing was revitalizing Poynton, Poynton was dying, but the vehicle movement and the traffic at Fountain Place was key to the revitalization..."

timemark 11:50 "...recreate a space, place outside of the church is again part of the town, no longer merely an appendage to the highway..."

timemark 12:15 "If you're not comfortable, you're not going to dwell. If you're not going to spend any time here, what's the chance of you're going to spend any money here?"

When you drive south of Lawrence Av. on Lincoln Av, a designated Pedestrian Street
Retail, what is the driving speed? It's not posted, but it's certainly not 30 mph.

And Colleen, from what I've read of Ryan Richter, self serving and selfish motives are not his way of working.

Your convenience is not more important than other users of the public space that is the street safety.

  • IU,
    Thank you for your contribution.
An exception doesn't prove a rule.
Anecdotes don't illuminate the general condition.

Fact: there is a new modal hierarchy.
Fact: that new hierarchy puts vehicle considerations last.

The historic city driver expectation that streets are links rather than places will not be supported as we move forward.

  • Time mark2:25 "There's even a recognition outside of cities that you've got to slow down...the difference between 20 mph and 40 mph is literally life and death."

Doggie Poop debate in our household :-)

Poll for the community: My husband and I have differing opinions on this. We pick up after our dog, I then dispose of the bag in the nearest trash can, my husband brings the bag home and drops it in our trash can. For you dog owners, how do you handle this?

  • Zeke - the reason for the biodegradable poop bags, inside a Jewel bag, is we have 3 dogs. On a quick walk around the hood, I may only need one green bag. But if we take them to the forest preserve for a long walk, I end up getting 3 green bags to carry to the next can I see, while holding 2 leashes. I guess I need to buy some bigger bio bags to put my small ones in! :)

Lowering my cable tv bill.

We could use your advice. We've been paying almost $180 for TV & Internet together through cable. I've been asking friends and neighbors to see who they use for service.

My sister shared a site she found through ND that recommends the right TV service based on channels you want:www.10channels.com. It's telling me a bundle from AT&T would be $50 less each month for the next year. The Internet speed looks fast. There's another good offer from DIRECT if we want a satellite.

Before I call, has anybody tried AT&T or a satellite? If so, how is the connection and speed?
