Let's revitalize the 23rd Ward.

Every resident deserves to feel good about their community and feel good about being a part of that community. Every business owner deserves to see their business flourish and bring enough revenue to support their families. So, I ask you, is that what is happening? Are you earning enough money to live and raise your children in the 23rd Ward? Is your business profitable enough that you can keep your doors open and be competitive? If not, I have a vision for the NEW 23rd Ward. My vision is to give a makeover to the 23rd Ward. We need to create more family oriented neighborhoods, so residents will want to live here, raise their children here and hopefully stay here. We should not have to go to Orland Park or La Grange to have a good cup of coffee or an enjoyable meal. We should be able to get it here. If other communities can do it, we can do it. My vision is to encourage local businesses to stay here and invest here, so they strengthen our neighborhoods and provide needed jobs. I want to excite tourists and visitors to come to our Midway Airport area with the promise of an unforgettable dinning and shopping experience. In order to do so we need to change the perception that the Chicago’s Southwest area is unattractive and has nothing to offer. We need to revitalize our infrastructure and utilize abandoned buildings and vacant lots. Our alderman is given 1.3 million dollars per year to spend in his ward on improvements. So, I am proposing that we set aside a portion of that money for the beautification of our ward and plant new trees and provide flower baskets and benches for businesses as we see so often in the suburban areas. I will work with individuals and businesses to partner up with to make this special project fully funded. The creation of an advisory committee will ensure and guarantee that these improvements are invested fairly in every part of the ward. Together, we can take the 23rd Ward into a new direction and make it the great community it can be.

Ethnicity should not be used as issue in a political campaign

Seeking public office often finds candidates who attempt to run an election on a racial or ethnic platform. Pride in your heritage is what makes Americans and Chicagoans so great, but it should never be used as issue in a political campaign. Candidates need to run on ideas, love of community and a desire to make changes that benefit all of their residents not just the chosen few of their ethnic persuasion. If you are Hispanic, Polish, Irish or any other ethnic group, you should be voting for the best candidate and ethnicity should not play a part in your decision on who to vote for.

  • Get your heads out of your asses and address the problem of getting more squad cars patrolling this neighborhood. There is more and more crime being committed and nothing is being done about it.

  • Chicago will never be world class as long as the Aldermen can keep all you little folks arguing with each other.

    Simple truth.

Martin Arteaga Talks Development for the 23rd Ward!

Let's talk development. Let's talk University Village. Do you remember when Maxwell Street was much rougher and grittier than it is today? I can remember and I am sure you do, too, because it was not very long ago. I spent time at UIC and I was able to play a key role in that community center development. Let's talk development. Let's talk University Village. Do you remember when Maxwell Street was much rougher and grittier than it is today? I can remember and I am sure you do, too, because it was not very long ago. I spent time at UIC and I was able to play a key role in that community center development. The result was a successful redevelopment and the creation of the popular and much-patronized University Village. Residents and tourists no longer have to tolerate the grit, the abandoned buildings and the feeling of hopelessness that those things bring. Residents, tourists, students, passersby, and all can now enjoy walking, jogging, biking, and patronizing the safe and vibrant streets of University Village. This is a perfect example of how valuable resources can invested intelligently into the community so that EVERYBODY WINS.

To revitalize the 23rd Ward, we need community development and community outreach experience and HANDS ON LEADERSHIP. Throughout the ward we see vacant lots and abandoned buildings that are vandalized and underutilized. Let's take matters into our own hands. Let's revitalize the 23rd Ward. I'm ready and I'm up to the challenge. The time for change is now! We need to revitalize the Archer Avenue Business District and redevelop the area near Midway Airport. We need more business and jobs. This is what I will fight for as your next 23rd Ward Alderman.

Anna Goral Announces Candidacy for Alderman in Chicago’s 23rd Ward!

Garfield Ridge resident and local business woman, Anna Goral, announced her candidacy for Alderman in Chicago’s 23rd Ward today. Anna believes residents need an alderman who really cares to acts as a true public servant. For far too long politicians have destroyed our economy, neglected our public safety (e.g. Chicago is the new murder capital of the USA, according to National Review Online), ignored our educational needs (closing 50 Chicago public schools) and taken us to the brink of disaster, by ruining our pension system and making our property taxes so high most cannot afford to pay them.
The 2011 municipal election brought us one of the closest aldermanic races in 23rd Ward history. A mere few hundred votes prevented Anna from facing Zalewski in a run-off election. Four years have passed, and we face even greater problems as a community. “People are just sick and tired of the same old politicians running their lives and I want to change that”, Anna said. “I am a problem solver, a good listener, and a visionary. I can see our ward growing into a vibrant community where every child gets a world-class education, local businesses get support from their officials, residents feel safe in their homes and protected on their streets and their alderman is available to serve the entire community not just privileged few. Being an alderman is a tough job and probably not for everyone, but I know I am the right “man” for the job!” Goral concluded.

Their instructors did a presentation at Monday night's Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch meeting so last night, my son and I attended one of their classes.

The instructors are knowledgeable professionals who are great teachers. I highly recommend their classes for kids, women and men who want to learn about self defense.

You can read about them online at Southwest Chicago Post or visit their website - gorillahammer.org.

We experienced a power outage at about 3:00 a.m. this morning in the vicinity of 52nd and Massasoit. It came back on about half an hour later (so many digital clocks to reset!) but now I'm just curious as to how widespread it was.

I am the new supervisor at Strohacker Park. Like many people already said, I personally can not fix that park in one day. I did submit many work request to Chicago Park District. Also requested for big capital budget improvements for 2015/2016. There are over 250 parks in the city and work order requests are submitted daily. Little patience here. This park is not a $500 fix. Little things can slowly be done but other things need budget approvals. So far we are getting new playgrounds in Fall of this year and I think that's a big step in the right direction. This park stayed unstaffed due to economy crisis few years back and budget cuts. Many business shut downed, many people lost their jobs, including park employees, and many lost their homes. I am still young but I do understand that when economy is bad, then there is not much that we can do. Economy is slowly picking up, Chicago Park District secured some funds and they are doing everything in their power to fix over 250 parks in the city of Chicago. Give me a chance as a supervisor to fix it up. Chicago Park District is aware of the situation. To my knowledge, I am the NEW supervisor and I am the ONLY one with Chicago Park District that will do something about it. If ANYONE has any issues or concerns about this park, please see me. I grew up as a kid at the parks, my parents worked 10-14 hrs shifts so park was my 2nd home. I learned sooo much from park staff at the time and with the love of the park patrons and the staff I made my decision as young kid that this is what I want to do in life. I want my 2nd home to be also 2nd home to many kids in the neighborhood. I worked soooo hard to where I am today. I started with the parks as volunteer since age 13 and started working once I turned 16. Park is my life. 15 years later I am here fighting strong. I don't have to say much more. Chicago Park District is not only my job, it's my passion and most important it is my life, my one and only life.

  • You will do great things because your passion drives your spirit. I will not say good luck cause I don't believe in luck. Its all about working hard for what you believe in. I will be in there soon to lend a hand if you allow it. Take care.

Stray cat spotted

I saw a grey cat with yellow eyes (no collar) on the west side of the 5100 block of Neenah. The cat was obviously a housecat, and didn't seem to have been on the street very long.

Please, neighbors, be aware of your pets when you open doors, and please keep your cats indoors. Earlier this month, I saw a cat killed by a car on 52nd and Rutherford (brown tabby with a purple collar). Please protect your cats by keeping them inside.

  • Oh, MOST unfortunate... poor cats! I agree, to your reminder 'Neenah'. Oh, MOST unfortunate... poor cats! I agree, to your reminder 'Neenah'. There is an 'epidemic' of lost pets (I would say, this is MAINLY being caused by an epidemic of careless people-- not being careful about monitoring or containing their pets-- or perhaps having a misguided attitude of letting their pets be 'free' to wander and roam.

This only ends up like the cat I too, saw today It was newly hit by a vehicle (as it was not yet smashed), but was, fortunately dead by time I saw it (disembowled!-- yes, this is the frequent and unfortunate ending for such pets, on our city streets....we can't look away from that fact).

But, I would like here, to identify it as much as I can, so, IF someone IS still wondering what happened to their 'kitty', at least, they might have some 'closure' (and if I were that person, I would go to the site and make sure to check and then honor their pet by burying its remains, if possible):

Cat seen dead on Archer Avenue (between S. Keeler and Tripp Avenues--):
Mostly white w. black markings and perhaps some greyish coloring too; The body was lighter, the head was darker; it seemed like a younger or a smaller-boned animal from what I could tell in passing, but NOT a kitten). Like I said, it was certainly dead, but seemed like it just recently had happened (circa 3:30 PM, today). I am sorry, for the animal, and for you (if you recognize your cat). This happens, people; so please, please, please, take better care of your pets!

Last night, I saw another stray cat, black and white (tuxedo), with yellow eyes, again on the west side of the 5100 block of Neenah. When I tried to approach it, it ran back through the alley toward Nashville.

I hope that we all can look out for the strays in our neighborhood in hopes of helping their owners to find them and bring them home.

You're welcome, Neenah. Certainly, if it were my pet companion, I would want to know what became of it, however heartbreaking to learn such news....

I kept thinking about that poor cat through the evening. I sat down to read some collected local papers, and lo and behold, came across an article entitled:

'Fireworks and Thunderstorms: Guide to Keeping Cats Calm'. Well, we just had
both back to back days of such noise, so, likely the cats we saw, may have been unfortunates that had panicked and ran off due to the booming....

This article gives common sense advice-- that owners should take EXTRA of their sensitive animals around such times of loud, extended noise:

    1) Provide them an extra "Safe Space...comfortable...secure"

    2) "Stay Calm" yourself (your pet picks up your emotional energy)

    3) Consider pet-calming products (e.g. 'Bach Rescue Remedy"); would you believe that there is a "Calming Collar for Cats", based on science (laced with natural pheromones that mimics a mother cat's chemicals that calm her kittens-- and calms cats in general). Supposedly large chain pet-stores carry this product.

    4) "Be there"-- stay home with your pets at such noisy times; if you can't, make sure a responsible adult they are familiar with can be with them (i.e. don't just abandon them to an empty house or yard).

    5) If your pet is super-stressed by such noise, consider advice from your veterinarian to help your pets through such crises.
