DISASTER HOTLINE for the 23rdWard!

When a disaster strikes, people look for help and expect to get it from their elected officials. When a disaster strikes, people look for help and expect to get it from their elected officials. These past several months, we have faced cruel weather conditions where heavy rains and gusty winds left many residents with flooded basements, downed trees, damaged roofs, downed power lines and broken gas mains. Many of these conditions could be life threatening. People lost electricity, needed additional trash pick-ups, required prompt assistance to have sewers opened up, etc. It is unfortunate, that in 19 years of alderman Zalewski being in the office, residents have not gotten the assistance they deserve, but help is on the way.
If elected, I will create an aldermanic DISASTER HOTLINE with open phone lines, not just a recording, to assist and provide information to residents of the 23rd Ward. My aldermanic staff and I will answer phones from 6am till midnight during any emergency to provide answers, take requests and expedite outage repairs. The residents would be able to call my office to find out when electricity will be restored, downed trees cleaned up or how to get assistance in pumping water from their basements. These are issues the public deserves to be helped with. It is just the right thing to do when people need help.

Ms Goral, I like the idea of being able to report, access and receive timely information during a disaster but such services are generally available be it through Com-Ed, Chgo, FEMA, .... Having a clearing-house layer of mgmt that in my guess will say, 'call Com-ed,, heres the #" really does no good.

Rather, the community services I would like to see accessible during a disaster, are pretty much the same as during happy times, just tightened up a bit. e.g.,

    1. Mobility. Getting around on a bicycle could be convenient. Power and docking info may be out for DIVVY bicycle stations but let's take that chance. Next, striped bicycle lanes that the community is already used to and a bicycle shop or two along Archer.

    2. Gathering places with tables, maybe heat, water or something warm. Independently-owned cafe's up and down Archer from Pulaski to Harlem. Cafe's are also a great place to access wifi if necessary.

    3. Independent family-run restaurants. See cafes above.

    4. Things may be cheaper at big-chain hardware stores, but it's the walkable neighborhood hardware stores that will be needed. Highlight them now and increase their on-site staff so that there are plenty for repairing window panes, ....... A note on hardware stores. I find it difficult to walk into and stay in a hardware store that has on display especially right by the cash registers (for easy cary-out) all those lawn chemicals, sprays, weed killers, .... How does staff manage to breath Scott's poisons throughout the workday. Imo, a hardware store w/o forcing a customer to be exposed to lawn chemicals is greatly appreciated.

    5. One of the first things people do immediately post a disaster is wander the streets. See Mobility and Cafes above.

But why focus on disaster. Rather, let's focus on quality of life. See bicycles and cafes above.

Was that you I saw at the Divvy station on Michigan & Oak?

He then explained to me that Mr. Villareal is a candidate for Alderman in the 23rd Ward. He told me to google a video that circulated online via social media: http://youtu.be/PMFlYdv8Wbw and then another of him answering questions from what seems to be a reporter: http://youtu.be/D-8gXm3p9f4. The man then ranted about Mr. Villareal's losing his job as an officer for a gun related incident, abusing his power, and beating his wife. He then went off on how Mr. Villareal stated that if he were elected, he would put on a bullet proof vest, carry a gun, and patrol the streets.

Since I had never heard of this, all I could tell this man was that I would look it up. Then explained to him that I might be of Hispanic Heritage, but I am an American, educated, Tax Payer, who served my country. Then told him that Mr. Villareal does not represent most Hispanics view. We are not trying to take over!!! We have the same American Dream as the next person, no matter their background.

After watching the videos I was speechless that Mr. Villareal spoke as if he had a "Latino Manifest Destiny" to prove. So I am not sure what or who to believe. Just hope Latinos/Hispanics don't just vote for him because of his race. After all look at how Alderman Solis sold out the Latino/Hispanic community in Pilsen.

What I do know is that as a Latina/Hispanic/American/Woman/Human, Mr. Villareal will not be getting my vote. Especially if he is rumored to been fired for abusing his power as an Officer and abusive. I hope those are just rumors, but even then just from watching his stump speech and interview his point of being "Officer Alderman" is ludicrous.

It takes more than a Spanish Surname to win my vote!

It may help to think of it this way. We (you) the people of the SW-side have a position to fill - a 'job' to fill and are looking for the candidate with the best qualifications. Imo, candidates wishing to fill this position should be sending a resume with references. They should submit to a drug test and if lucky and pass a 6-month probationary period.

Ok this is what I heard he would do is have a open door policy when it comes to his ward office. He would hold town hall meeting and ask the opinions of the community on all projects that take place in the ward a increase in police force and a stop on school closing and a stop in privatization. To name a few.oh and he said he would take 20% of his yearly income and donate it back into the community. And take the TIF fund from politician hand and bring it back to the community.

  • I've lived in the area all my life and have seen the neglect with the streets and business come and go. But what really upsets me is when I see families trying to cross the street near schools and cars just zooming by. Now all of a sudden there are new stop signs everywhere and roads being re-paved. Could it be because because of the upcoming election? It's too little too late so the incumbent Alderman Zalewski loses my vote.

I will not box with you on this issue. But your response to my post attempts to distort the position of your original Friday post wherein you stated “He is clearly using TIF money (property tax money) in a pay to play scheme. This corruption needs to stop”

As regards your original claim, what Zalewski did or did not do on ANY other subject/issue is irrelevant to the allegation you stated that he is using TIF money in a pay to play scheme. Whether he helped a family member get a job with the city (which I have not researched and have no knowledge of) is irrelevant to the charge that he is indulging in “pay to play scheme”. Stay on point and clarify one issue/allegation at a time
    .
Stating that an elected official (alderman or any other official) is committing a “pay to play scheme” is a serious charge, and if you have insider information on this subject, for the sake of the entire 23rd Ward, you do need to contact the Feds. Throwing unsubstantiated claims into a public forum serves nobody.

It's Official, SW-Side No Longer Part of Chicago

Had someone, anyone, wandered over to the communities of Garfield Ridge, Clearing, Sleepy Hollow, Elsden, Archer Heights and even Brighton Park, this wouldn't have happened.

Any comments?

Campaign literature focuses on crime, grade-school age activities, seniors and veterans. What about a little focus on those who ride and want to ride a bicycle either to/from or through the SW-side?

  • Chet, I'm interested in your ideas to make the SW more bike friendly. As a rookie commuter, I too have noticed that the SW is terribly neglected. Perhaps this will change as more and more people demand it as you referenced. But I believe the bicycling community is growing on the SW side, take me as an example.

    Hey Felipe,

Yes I see an interest & things changing. I think the driving force is simple demographics as I've posted on EB AH & Garfield Ridge the last two years. We're not there yet, it will take a few more years. I've recently reached my late 40s and couldn't wait so I moved up to Rogers Park. It's those on the SW-side now in their 20-40 that will make a difference. I'd be happy to come down to talk some Sat or Sun AM or early PM.

    Meanwhile:
    1) Become a Divvy member and vote on their web site for SW-side locations. Divvy had issues getting enough bicycles this summer. They promise many bicycles & locations for next year.
    2) Become a member of Active Transportation Alliance & voice your zip code & interest.
    3) For an off-road trail, I see the most likely route being along the Sanitary Canal I/55 corridor. Google map it. From Lockport to Halsted, most of this land is out of Chicago and owned by the Sanitary District. Elsewhere like along the North-Shore Channel & recently the Cal Sag, community interest materialized into beautiful, accessible nature/bicycle paths. I would express your interest to the elected Chicago Sanitary District commissioners.

From 1st Ave west, the old I&M rite-of-way (30'x2 for tow paths & 30' for canal) is maintained by the IL DNR. It's a hidden treasure back there for industry and others (fly dumpers, 3-wheelers, ....) so expect resistance. Best access is under 1st Ave through Summit. Say hello to the cops for me.

The biggest concern expressed by Summit and Stickney officials years ago when I discussed this with them is how to get emergency vehicles back there (between Harlem & Cicero access is only currently possible via Harlem & Cicero) and who would pay for it.

There is plenty of Federal & state funding out there. It's community interest that is key.

I prefer to not ride on Chicago streets. Up here I use the lakefront trail for where I need to go. Hence the push for an off-road trail.

    Thanks & Ride on!
