Edgebrook Starbucks is temporarily closed

Okay, so the Starbucks on Devon at Central is temprarily closed "for improvements." The sign says they will reopen as soon as possible. I sure hope so, it's my favorite Starbucks.

  • Jen Portage Park resident

They're probably just redecorating. The Starbucks on Peterson was redone last year, and they're working their way thru the city.

  • The ladies at My Sister's Closet told my MIL, who is a regular at both Starbucks and MSC, that the Starbucks was closed due to a flood. Possible sewer backup? It's my understanding they are open again though.

Here is a plan for Devon and Caldwell:

Here is an idea I presented to Governor Quinn under the Recovery Act but never got a reply. Maybe you can research it up and present it on your blog.

Once upon a time the train station was located east of Central on the south side of the tracks (across from Old Edgebrook, there is still an old sidewalk there if you look close) where a picnic grove is now. I doubt any one alive today knows why it was moved to its present location north of Devon where every time a train stops it completely snarls traffic in downtown Edgebrook. My idea is to move the train station back to its original location so when trains stop the train would be completely on the tracks east of Central and as such the gates would not have to be down while loading and unloading.

The tricky part to this is that land would have to confiscated from the FPDCC. I’m talking about the land at the southeast corner of Central and Caldwell, the entire parcel east of Central, south of Caldwell, west of the golf course, north of the tracks. A new train station would be built with sorely needed parking. It would also create a safer pedestrian environment for train passengers to exit and enter the train interface. Considering what a daily nightmare traffic congestion is in downtown Edgebrook because of the train stopping the argument would be that this is using public land for the public good and the FPDCC is never going to use this obscure parcel for anything any way because of its location.

I know, lots of politics involved, where would the funding be found during a failing economy with governments going broke would mean a very, very, very long row to hoe, but like the saying goes: “Make no small plans”. Worth a shot on your blog to get some attention. What I would like out of this project is a Veteran’s memorial incorporated into the mix

    Dennis

  • Finally, a suggestion from someone which makes sense. ANY change to the frustrating traffic melee caused by any train stopping at the Edgebrook Station would be welcome.

Dennis, my wife and I hope that your suggestion at least sparks some interest in the minds of the powers-to-be to look at a so obvious traffic problem that needs to be addressed.

In the present state, traffic will only get worse! I have seen traffic back-ups east of the tracks to Le Mai street.

    Thanks for your suggestion

The ONCC meetings are not set up to hear your concerns or respond. Its mission is issuing reports on noise complaints (a record amount in 2013 and a monthly record in January) and to distribute money for sound insulation. Fair Allocations in Runways was formed a year ago in response to the FAA's/CDA's change to runway usage. In November of 2013, the first month of the change, 90% of arrival traffic landed over the NW side. Landings/arrivals that used to be based upon wind direction, will, under the new plan, utilized runways solely in an east/west flow, regardless of wind direction. 70% over east side, 30% over the west. This is a massive change that affects all of us.

The quality of our lives, our property values, our ability to open our windows in summer and enjoy our yards are all being impacted without any substantive community input or discussion. FAiR is working to change this. Find us on Facebook or go to www.fairchicago.org for more info.

  • Jac Charlier AKA Citizen Jac Working to build community

Thanks Brian. Agree with RobertFG. The FAiR Coalition is the way to make your voices heard over the noise of the planes. FAiR is a rapidly growing Coalition that has been the leader on this issue for our neighborhoods, city and suburbs together. Check them out and get involved...www.fairchicago.org. You can report noise complaints easily through the FAiR website too.

We had no say when the new runway takeoff/landing patterns were put in place. It's time for you to be heard.
