Little Free Library books stolen - again

Dear friends and neighbors,
We have been operating a Little Free Library at the corner of Sunnyside and Hamilton since June with great pleasure. Dear friends and neighbors,
We have been operating a Little Free Library at the corner of Sunnyside and Hamilton since June with great pleasure. It's been a wonderful way to meet neighbors, share books, and spread the love of reading. (You can see more about the organization at littlefreelibrary.org). However, three separate times in recent weeks the entire library has been emptied of books.
I'm asking for your help in two ways:
1. If you see someone taking ALL of the books, please say something, or note the license plate number or make of car. (Some neighbors saw a man last week pull up to the library, take all the books out, put them all in his car, and drive away).
2. We are now running out of our supply of books to keep refilling it. If you have books you would like to donate -- books in good condition that you actually think someone would really like to read, not books you need to get rid of -- please do! If the library is full, put them on our porch and we will keep them for when this happens again. Of special need is children's books for all ages, which seem to fly out of there.

Of course, we want to keep the library open and available for everyone who loves to read and share books. Thanks for your help.

Burglary on Leland Ave. next to Damen Brown Line Stop

Our house, 2027 W. Leland Ave., was burglarized yesterday while my wife and I were at work. The burglars appear to have come through our back gate, which opens onto the alley underneath the El tracks right at the western end of the Damen brown line stop. We suspect they left through the front door. They took our TV, 3 laptops, other electronics, and other miscellaneous stuff. It happened sometime between 7:40 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. We are just west...

We are just west of Damen Ave. on Leland -- the fourth house on the south side of the street. If you saw anything suspicious around our house or on our street yesterday, we'd very much appreciate it if you'd reply to this thread.

Thanks in advance.

Another way to minimize your home being burglarized is being better acquainted with your surrounding neighbors, which you don't seem to be. While we don't try to be the best of friends,we do have a sense of whom belongs where and are immediately suspicious when we see an unfamiliar face or car. We have a block "phone tree" in case we ever see any suspicious activity near someone's home or apt., we can call that individual as well as the police. We also have whistles so in case we see a burglary in progress, this causes noise to alert other neighbors and possibly scare the assailant away. It seems to me that who knows or monitors your and your wife's schedule may be the one(s) who violated you. I don't believe some random stranger did this. Most of the time it is someone who knows your departure and arrival time. Best of luck and stay safe!

In various neighborhoods I have lived in for 25+ years, I have had a back door panel kicked in, I've had people crawl through an open window, bust into my car, break into my garage, etc etc. Those were good and bad neighborhoods. It just happens. This guy lives in a very nice part of the city, and most likely this is not some predatory thief watching his every move for the perfect time to break in, it is a random event from some jerks who came in on the el to cause some trouble. If it was me I'd replace any busted locks, assess any other security risks and fix them, then move on with life.

Credit where credit is due (City Graffiti Removal)

I just wanted to share this positive experience with the EB community. Yesterday morning I noticed that our building was tagged. I went to the Chicago Streets and San page, filled out a form that took a minute and presto; this morning they were out blasting the tag away. Pretty impressive City of Chicago!

  • Yes! I too had the same experience a few months ago! Opposing gangs in the neighborhood had tagged the garage and nearly the entire length of my building (that is on a corner, and thus has high exposure on the one side). I filled out the online form, posted pictures (this is important to do) and emailed Ald. Mell's office as well. Graffiti was gone the next day. Others I know have had the same quick turnaround.

Well done, City of Chicago and Rahm!

5 ways to build a business intelligence Centre of Excellence

I'm delighted to have been invited to speak at Information Age’s Data Leadership 2014 conference on 30 October. In my session, I'll be sharing tips for building a BI Centre of Excellence (COE) in an enterprise environment , based upon my experience of constructing and managing IT services at big enterprises for the last 12 years.

I'm currently in the process of helping to construct a data visualisation COE based on Tableau Software at a Tier 1 Investment bank in London.

To give a flavour of what I’ll be speaking about, I’ve identified five areas fundamental to creating a successful Centre of Excellence. But if you have any questions ahead of then, ping me on Twitter.

1. Choose the right tools

There are a ton of tools out there. And a lot of them aren't that great. Enterprise users are time-poor, under constant pressure to deliver and generally impatient. For the long-term success of any COE, it is fundamental your applications are easy to use, agile and feature rich.

I've been trying to achieve the holy grail of a great BI stack for years now, and finally it seems like tools are emerging that allow this vision to be a reality.

When evaluating applications, always look for agility and ease of use. Most of your users won't have much time to learn the tool; they probably won't read much of the documentation and also probably won't have time to attend any training courses.

They'll want to fire-up the application and dive right in. As a result that experience needs to be great from the off. Then once they're running with it, can they generate their content or achieve their desired results quickly?

They'll generally be happy to trade off some of the more advanced functionality for a tool that gives rapid results.

This is no different. Are you really suggesting that all people who smoke a little reaf, are gonna die or that they should be locked up for it? Legalization and regulation would seem to be a much more reasonable way to deal with a host of issues.

Before and after school care needed

We are in need of a child sitter for before and after school care for a 7 year old child. We would need someone to watch him before school and drop him off at school, then pick him up from school and watch him until one of us gets home. We're in north Lincoln square. This would only be necessary when I'm out of town for work. Please inquire if you're interested. Thank you.

  • Hastingsp North Center / St. Ben's

Try Urban Sitter - they have a great app and you can find sitters by school location, interview them and read parent reviews. More affordable than sitter city IMO.

Hastingsp... How do you search urban sitter by school association? It asked for our child's school but it doesn't seem like it is associating it with our search criteria.

Hello neighbors,

There is a bus stop right in front of my house. And having some issues with the people that wait for the bus. I recently dug out my front yard grass and redid the whole landscaping. I also had a short fence but up so that it forces people to not go my front lawn and step on my new grasses, bushes, flowers, etc. However a new issue has come up. When people wait for the bus they sit on the posts of my short fence. The bus stop has no bench or bus stop shelter. It is just a tiny metal pole with the CTA sign. For 12 years I have struggled with people going on my lawn to wait for the bus. Thought that once I put a 2 1/2 ft long fence people would stay away. I have contacted the CTA but I have not heard back from them. Contacted the aldermans office but simply said they cant do anything about that. Any ideas of what can be done?

  • Sus I have lived in Budlong for 12 years.

Any leather repair recommendations?

Hello.

I have a leather bag that I use for work every day, and the stitching on one of the handles came off. I am relatively new to the neighborhood, and don't know where a lot of things are. Do you have any recommendations for a leather shop around here that could fix the stitching? Thank you.

  • There's a place I go now called Classic Shoe Repair. It's not in the hood but it's near Clark & Wrightwood. I had a pair of Fleuvog boots that needed repair and took them to Theodore's and he said he didn't think he could fix it. I was recommended to Classic by the Fluevog store. He fixed the boots perfectly and polished and waterproofed them all for $20. He also does custom leather work and leather repairs. Highly recommended.

Wow, this is such a timely thread. I need the pocket on a jacket fixed and get some boot 'winterized'. I used to go to the fellow in Lincoln Village, but he's moved, I used a guy downtown, but aside from his prices, I'm now retired. So Mike on Wolcott, I'll try this Theodore, and Thanks so much!

No sign at Wolcott stop - Lawrence 81 bus route

I've noticed since the repairs have been in progress at this stop right outside Sears (going westbound) that the sign for the 81 bus has disappeared. Anyone else notice this? And I also wonder if it has been reported to CTA or whoever is in charge of replacing the street sign.

  • Melanie F. Lincoln Square Resident

The sign is gone but the bus drivers still stop there. Knowing that they are doing major excavations of the road and sidewalks, as well as replacing the street lamps, I bet they had to temporarily remove the pole.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Flooding in Garden unit

Hi neighbors,

I recently moved to the area in a garden apartment. I've been experiencing consistent flooding when the rains get really sudden and strong like they have been typically this season. Wondering if any other garden units in the area are having the same experience or if there is a problem with our specific drain nearby...any thoughts or advice appreciated!

  • Budlong Woods neighbor Chicago girl for life

Unfortunately depending on where you live it could be a common thing. There have been various issues over the years because of the rain stoppers the city installed, the big dig project and river overflowing. As a general rule of thumb, I would never rent or buy a garden apartment in the city for that reason. Flooding is not covered by the insurance companies.

The City has restructured the sewers to keep rainwater on the ground in order to keep the system from backflowing raw sewage. This is coinciding with what appears to be an unexpected bit of local climate change, in the form of massive amounts of rain pouring down monsoon-style, instead of the slow and steady rain we've been used to here. And in a perfect-storm sort of way, at least in this area, this has also coincided with McMansion after McMansion paving over any and every bit of open ground available, so natural drainage is at an all-time minimum. (Have you noticed the massive street floods at every corner lately?) The water has to go somewhere.

Yeah, I wouldn't be renting any below-ground living space, and I'd get all your stuff in the basement up off the ground to keep it from getting water-damaged. Just in case.

It threw me because the woman was almost rude about it. No need for that. You're right though...New Yorkers are pretty snooty about the B&T crowd.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF THE DOG BUT A PRETTY CLOSE MATCH. His ears and tail are a little longer.

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

XIPPO (Bar @ Damen/Grace) - Noise Out of Control!

These Xippo patrons are out of control. I can hear them coming a block away, then they congregate....And get louder and louder. I've called the police but of course they're gone by the time/if they show. Plan on letting the alderman know about it.

  • Thanks for the heads up, Kevin. I never even noticed the sign changed back to Xippo until you posted (I live across the street from the bar). They 'appear' to have closed up shop for the past year with the exception of the occasional paint and wine party. It's been blessedly quiet ever since and it's been a joy. I hope this isn't a sign that their loud, obnoxious Eurotrash dance parties will resume and once again destroy our neighborhood's peace and quiet.

Need someone with pickup/SUV/van to transport couple pieces of furniture

Would calling 311 be the best bet for getting this to stop?

  • It was not a house alarm. Our neighbors discovered the source: A discarded smoke alarm that had been tossed on the bushes in the alley between Hamilton and Hoyne. The sound is now gone...and mental health to all surrounding houses has been restored.

Nah, not without there actually being a permit posted. But from the commencement of underground work, to completion? You really think that can't be done in 5 months?

Of course, the whole situation reinforces the view that it's impossible for a business to get things done in Chicago--if a large-ish, local, business like Malanti's can't get things to happen, then who can?

But then, it's also possible that they like to do a single project at a time, and while the Oak Park Malnati's opened basically on time, the West Loop one (where Ina's was) appears to be a bit behind schedule. So that might be the main delay.

In any case, barring acts of god, or too many plane shadows cracking the slab, there's no reason that they can't go from actively starting underground utility work to open in 150 days.

  • I hope I lose my bet.

This sweet gray cat with a white belly and bright green eyes has been sitting on my porch for a couple hours now - very domesticated and cuddly! A neighbor said he had been taking care of her for a couple days - took her to a vet and found she's a middle-aged kitty, but she's not microchipped.

I sadly can't have cats in my apartment, but I'm keeping some water out for her and can keep an eye out, too! She may be owned by someone on the block and just out for a multi-day stroll, but if anyone in the Northcenter neighborhood recognizes her, let me know and I'll see if she's roaming around!

  • I have also posted her picture on Craigslist Lost & Found section. Hoping someone will claim her.
    Thanks Kristine for hosting her

Thanks, Jodi! She is currently in our front entryway, sheltering out of the storm. I wish I could let her in the house, but she would NOT be welcomed by the boy cats! But she's been eating a bunch and seems very at-home on the front porch. She gets regular visits by the neighborhood kids, too.

Lost Orange Cat

Chester is an 8-yr old shorthair neutered male tabby. He is mostly orange with white markings and underbelly. He’s about 13 pounds. He is also microchipped so a vet, animal shelter or police station can scan him to verify that he is mine.
Please call or text me at 847-977-2344.

  • Thanks! I will check it out. I really appreciate you telling me.

  • Thanks again Kfed22! I found an orange tabby on Ainslie last night. It's not Chester. I've seen it before on the 4900 block of Winchester. There is a house there with an orange tabby and black cat. I will knock on their door to see if they are truly theirs.

Looking for Embroidery Shop for single item--quick turnaround

I previously posted about the need for a port a potty for a charity event. I'd like to get an apron embroidered with a simple name and design. Does anyone know of a business that's open on the weekends and might be able to do this by tomorrow midday?

  • Its probably too late but Bucktown Embroidery (2114 N Western) does embroidering on single items. I've taken a few items there in the past and they've done a great job. They have a quick turnaround and very reasonable prices.

Thanks so much! I wasn't impressed with their web site, but it's good to have a personal reco.

Winnepac Park Mom's Group

Any mom's around the area want to meet informally around the park to talk about how to improve schools in the area? Especially any mom's needing before or after school activities for the kids. Any mom's around the area want to meet informally around the park to talk about how to improve schools in the area? Especially any mom's needing before or after school activities for the kids. Tuesday afternoons around 7:30 with a snack or lemonade in the park. I can have some older kids watch your younger kids and I have extra tennis rackets. Thank you to Chrissy for the suggestion to make lemonade out of the negative issues some mom's have been experiencing. Let's focus on things we can agree on to start the first meeting - like the need for pre and after school programs to keep the kids engaged and safe until you can get home from work at 6 pm.
