Just curious on people’s thoughts and wonder if either of our Alderman can weigh in on this due to the fact that I basically have only one cable (not a satellite fan) option (Comcast), BUT I’m extremely frustrated with Comcast…of course like probably many of you I’ve been a Comcast customer for many years and this past December in our bill was included this beautiful chart that showed what all of the services cost…In my case I have Preferred XF Double Play and below is a description and cost.
Preferred XF Double Play
Includes Digital Preferred for primary outlet, HBO®, Streampix® and Performance Internet. $139.95

I won’t even dwell on the obvious part, the ridiculous amount of money I pay to watch TV and surf the web, BUT what really got my ire is that I pay $140.35 a dollar more for Preferred XF Double Play and on top of it do not get HBO® or Streampix® because apparently that plan wasn’t offered at the time my promotion ended…So…for you folks that are Comcast customers surely you’ve experienced the constant up and down of the cost of services, promotions and the fact that it seems as if there is all kinds of monopolistic, double secret pricing going on AND they even have the gall to publish a price list giving the impression that everything is on the up-n-up let alone the fact that now with the advent of electronic billing, NONE of us see a bill unless we DIG for it…I guess I’m just really irritated by all of this. I don’t want to have to go to DISH. I don’t have U-verse® or RCN available where I live. This just SUCKS…Sorry, I don’t think EB is supposed to be a place to vent, but I just thought some of you may share the same frustrations…

  • Adam writer

RCN is available in the area, and my bill is much cheaper. I loathe Comcast, too.

Hey, Matt, I'm back to un-apologize. I'm pretty sure you DO work for the devil. It only makes sense that they would have their plants out and about in Everyblock since they own it. I've noticed that in every thread regarding Comcast that I've come across, there's always at least one commenter that sings the praises of the company, and the rhetoric is usually boilerplate (including the old 'blazing fast' speed quote that they use in their own advertising). Over the past month, I've e-chatted three times (for a total of about 5 wasted hours altogether), waited for two call-backs that never came, and spent a few hours on the phone. I can't come anywhere NEAR what you claim to be paying, for HALF of what your getting. I quoted your deal several times, they said the only way a customer would get anything even close to that was if he were a new customer, as an intro deal. (That's Comcast loyalty for you). At least I got them to drop my current cost (full cost) a bit, up my speed, and best of all, lock in the rate for a year (no contract) so I won't have to do this whole dance yet again in another few months, and I can still bail with no penalties if I find a better deal.

Lakeshore garbage pickup at 5:20am

Has anyone else noticed that Lakeshore is picking up garbage before 7:00 and not by just a few minutes. I have called 311 to report them on several occasions. I have tried to talk to the driver but that just turned into him banging the cans louder. We have called the company several times. The first time we received a phone call and results for a couple months. Now they do not return our calls.

The only way they will stop is if enough people complain to 311 and they keep getting fined. Please call 311 if you hear them out before 7:00.

  • They're allowed to do business routes earlier than 7-A.M., but not residential routes.

  • That makes sense, Nick- G. The dumpsters for our bldg are shared with a couple businesses, one a restaurant, a braiding shop, and a mom & pop store. Am probably considered a business route. Still sucks to hear those trucks so early, especially on weekend mornings.

Does anyone know a jeweler in the area that could unbend one of my rings for a reasonable cost?

Thanks!

Any thoughts about Angie's List?

I think Angie's List is a great service, but it bothers me that you have to pay $35 a month to keep current, when you may only need a recommendation two or three times a year. I've opted out and am now going to use my neighbors here on EveryBlock for recs.

I think I paid $85 for the year last year, which is one reason I dropped out this year. Too much to pay for a service I use maybe one or twice a year. They also didn't have an option to buy only their on-line service; there was no lower rate if you didn't want the print magazine each month. Their service is overpriced at what they were charging me.

Cleaning them yourself is actually fairly easy! I nearly ruined my new Uggs this year with all the snow which I shouldn't have been wearing them in, oops! But I googled and found online info and gave it a try. I diluted Vinegar in water in a spray bottle. About 1/3 vinegar to water. Then I lightly sprayed my boots and let them dry. Once dry I use a suede brush and brushed them and amazingly they are almost good as new! I had to repeat on a couple spots, but in the end, I saved $ and saved my uggs! You should google "cleaning Uggs" or cleaning salt from Uggs and you will be amazed what you find! Give it a try! Worst case then take them to Theodores!

Good location, hope they either figure themselves out or fold quick and make room for someone that can cut the mustard.

USPS Packages stolen

This afternoon we had 2 packages stolen; the contents were removed and the boxes dumped in the trash.

Our place is on Western AVE near Winnemac. Not exactly low traffic area.

Argh!!

  • We've had UPS and USPS packages stolen out of the vestibule. For USPS, we have a PO Box in another zipcode because it is much closer to us. Unfortunately it is in nice neighborhoods where thieves "go shopping." We had a neighbor call when they found empty boxes belonging to many people on our street, all dumped in a basement area that was accessible.

  • We have all packages delivered to us at work unless we know we can plan to be home to receive them.

Recommended Condo Building Information Sharing Website

Hi All! My condo board association is looking for a new website service to share information between the residents in our 24 unit building in Lincoln Square. The website will need to be able to store documents (meeting minutes, assessment log), have a discussion forum, and be able to email out to the residents when new things have been added to the site. Can anyone recommend an easy to use, low-cost option? Thanks!

I second Basecamp (which will cost $20/month), but it all depends on your needs. Basecamp is an excellent option if you also need to create to-do lists and want a system that notifies users when something is due or coming up. And it's rather intuitive as far as project management systems go. But if your focus is mainly on communication with some document storage, then Google is likely the better option.

A good rule of thumb regarding tools like these is to use the one most members are comfortable/familiar with -- especially if you need buy-in and participation from all. If, however, project management is more a priority, and a few people will be doing most of the heavy lifting, then something more robust like Basecamp will keep you all, quite literally, on the same page.

Happy to answer questions about both if you have any!

Beige and Brown Cat at Wolcott and Berteau

We found a cat crying outside our porch at about 11pm on April 23rd. It looks like one of our neighbors heard her/him before we got home and left some food out. We did the same, but it continues to cry and cry. We are torn as to whether or not to bring it inside, but we don't think our own cat would appreciate that very much. If anyone has a lost cat, please respond. It's extremely friendly and clearly doesn't enjoy being outside.

There's a few things you can do depending on to what level you want to get involved. You can post here: https://www.facebook.com/lostcatsofillinois?ref=ts&fref=ts
You can take the cat in to a vet to see if it is chipped.
You can call vets in the area to see if anyone has reported it missing.
    You can hang posters.
    You can post on craigslist.
If anyone claims the cat, make sure it is really theirs by showing you pictures.

Getting a tree out of the parkway

There is a huge, monstrosity of an evergreen tree in front of my house in the parkway that I'm dying to get rid of. It was planted by the previous owners and although I love trees, I really detest this one. I've heard the city will hardly ever grant a permit to remove a tree in the parkway, though another person told me they aren't so precious about evergreens, which they don't themselves plant. Does anyone know the deal on this? I'm happy to plant another tree, just not this type.

  • The city was happy to cut down a huge beautiful tree in front of my house because of a blight and said they would plant another the following year. I was then told by the alderman's office that the ash tree problem has used up the funds for new plantings. I intend to buy a tree and plant it myself. However, I am not sure they will cut down a tree because it is ugly.

  • Will E. Kay o Nosey Neighbor.

If you've the cash, a city worker's got the axe.

I'm not in Lincoln Square or Ravenswood but next door in Andersonville and I can tell you that here and in many places in the city the Sprint reception is abysmal. At a friend's house at Ashland and Catalpa I get no reception indoors at all. Nada. Out on the sidewalk in front of their building things seem fine but inside it's hopeless. In my own apartment at Argyle and Clark, I get from a half a bar to a bar and a half of reception, tops--and that's since the upgrade. Many mornings it is a challenge just tracking the bus due to network errors. Again, it is better outdoors. And, there are a number of places down in the Loop where I get no reception at all indoors. I don't use my phone as much as many people do and the service I get with Virgin is cheap, so I tolerate it but it is frustrating. I should have known better than to sign up for it, though, when they had to walk my phone over to the window at the now-defunct Virgin Store on Clark just to get a signal...(in fairness, that was before the "upgrade" but I can't help thinking the rotten reception in the store's showroom had something to do with the fact that they are no longer there.)

  • I can't speak for Sprint, but I will say that ATT reception is terrible in this area. We currently use T-Mobile and the service is good in Chicago (for us), but terrible everywhere else.

I'm pretty sure that Verizon is the way to go and when we decide to upgrade our phones we'll be going with them just for better coverage while traveling. My husband uses a Verizon 4G hotspot thingamabob to connect to work remotely and we get reception pretty much everywhere with that thing.

I arrived to volunteer and the team lead, volunteer coordinator, shared with the other girls and I that we were to place our belongings we wished to not have sitting out in this "locked file cabinet."

Please be advised that the "locked file cabinet" was a sh*tty cabinet that someone could easily bust into. But, no need as the key to said sh*tty file cabinet was placed on a folding table in the middle of the check in area often left unattended to.

My gut told me to take my purse and keep it with me but I didn't want to appear suspect to the individuals we were helping that evening.

So, silly me, I left it. Only to come back to the "locked file cabinet" about two hours later and bam, its gone.

I'm so thankful I had friends with me to help figure out what to do as the church staff were not very helpful in assisting a quick search of the church property and staff.

I want my loss be a lesson to all doing good out there, keep doing good things for others but leave all personal items at home as many of these locations do not provide adequate storage and if your gut is telling you something, trust it. I'd have my purse and all its fabulous contents today if I would have trusted my gut.

  • Oh Charles & Penny, that is just terrible! I am so sorry you are experiencing the same loss as I am. I only wish that people volunteering were exempt from this type of crime. I hope the person who took your reader enjoyed books as much as you, I am...

Looking for a vet

Hi everyone. I'm moving into the City from down state. I'm bringing my cat with me who is in stage 4 renal failure, so I need a vet. I'm stocked up on her medical supplies for a while but I'll still need a vet to take her to.

Do anyone have any suggestions for a good, not too expensive vet in the area?

  • My vote is for Dr. Murphy and Dr. Scott at West Wrigley Animal Hospital on Ashland (south of Addison, north of Roscoe). They took great care of my 10 year old cat when she was hospitalized for kidney disease and were conscious of keeping costs but still giving her the care she needed.

  • I like Dr Jewell, my cats see him and not one of his partners. He and his staff treated us with a lot of compassion when one of my cats died and later when my other cat was euthanized. I switched from the Cat Hospital because I did not like seeing different vets all the time, (my favorite one left).

Suspicious activity at Belle Plaine and Lincoln and in North Center Town Square

Has anyone else noticed loitering and some generally odd happenings in this area. I see a car parked with people getting in and out and people loitering near the buildings. My guess is that there might be some drug sales going on. I'll be contacting the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone else has notified them.

  • tbf

I talked to the Alderman's office yesterday. This is a known issue with that block of buildings that house the empty laundry mat and the currency exchange. He said that they would let the beat Captain know that the activity is picking up and that neighbors should call the police anytime we see something odd.

  • I often see sketchy types going in and out of the closed laundromat. I've even seen them taking in giant TVs. It seemed odd, but it's not illegal to move a TV, and while I walk by often, I don't live in the neighborhood so I never reported anything.

If you've ever walked the east side of the 4800 block of N. Wolcott, you've walked over or around the worst stretch of sidewalk in Ravenswood. I'm finally fed up enough to do something about it and would encourage the support of all neighbors. Thanks!

Below is an excerpt from the email just sent to Jim Poole in the Ward 47 office.

Jim,

Just around the block from the new Mariano' there is a public disgrace. Besides the hundreds of residents using it, some customers and a lot of Mariano's employees are having to negotiate it too -- and somebody is going to get hurt.

The sidewalk in front of my neighbor building, at 4817 North Wolcott, managed by ICM Properties, 773-549-5443 has been a terrible hazard and now, ever since this last winter, it is a menace to public safety. I've tripped over this broken, uneven and potholed walkway for over 10 years and I'm fed up.

Please see the attached photos documenting this disgrace, and the building management.

I'm requesting that the Alderman do whatever possible to either force the management to repair this sidewalk in front of their building, or better yet find some emergency money and have the Ward replace it entirely.

Thank you ...

  • I think you meant Bill no works at the Alderman's office, Jim still does - he's the chief of staff - http://chicago47.org/staff/

As this post's creator, I'd like to express my thanks to the Alderman's office for getting the deteriorated stretch of sidewalk not merely repaired but entirely replaced. The work began 3 days after I emailed Mr. Poole, who acknowledged the urgency of the situation, and was completed within 24 hours. By any standards this response was exceptionally quick. Well done.
Many thanks as well to my neighbors here on Everyblock.com who voiced their support. Hopefully we've saved some trips & spills.

Philadelphian Romanian Church Crazy Drivers

Sunnyside and Paulina
Twice this am I was almost hit by the cars speeding through stop signs to drop off people at church! Then to be told f*ck off by the driver when I told them to stop.

I called about the illegally parked cars that continue to park in tow zones.

What more can be done! I documented the two cars that almost hit me as well.

  • Call if you'd like but I'm telling you, the police have looked me in the eye and said "I'm not ticketing a church, I don't want to go to hell..."

Believe me, the traffic here is a million times better than it was 8-10 years ago. They used to literally park in the intersection for hours. At least now they park in spaces and the noise level is down. I had thought maybe they suddenly had a change of heart since it's been so much better lately.

Most of the tight parking issues that force you to park on Ravenswood are not that much better when church isn't in session these days. The fact is that we have a lot of condos/multi-unit buildings and far more people/cars than there are spaces. We've politely asked that they respect the neighbors. (we met with the pastor in person, inside the church, with the alderman's office representative)

They don't care about the neighbors. Just be careful when you are crossing the street. Trying to do more will just leave you frustrated.

  • I used to live right across the street from this church. When I first moved in it was something different, I think maybe an Episcopal Church, and I hardly noticed them. As soon as it became the Philadelphia Romanian Church parking in the neighborhood became impossible on Sundays and some evenings and the street was much more crowded. They are one of the reasons I moved.

Street Sweeping

Thank goodness that the street sweeping schedule is beginning again. After the long winter and with spring just beginning, it's important to move your car so the sweepers can remove all the gunk and debris that has accumulated in the streets. It's unsightly and could clog sewer drains. Yes, it's inconvenient to find a parking spot during sweeping times, but important nonetheless -- and easy to avoid a $60 ticket!

Fun segment by Curious City about an otherwise mundane topic: http://www.wbez.org/series/curious-city/street-sweeping-essential-service-or-revenue-scam-109221

Kudos to Shelley's husband for cleaning the sewer grates! It helps if everyone pitches in on tasks like this. It drives me insane that the leaves don't seem to fall until the beginning of December, yet the last street sweeping is usually in October or early November. The city would save itself a lot of work in the spring if it had another sweeping in December (weather permitting). Oh well...
