Yard sale/garage sale ideas needed!

Hi. I live in an apt. building. I'm cleaning out and have a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell. Including a bicycle, some furniture, and a bunch of smaller belongings. So - I don't have a yard, I don't have a garage, and I don't think my landlord would approve of me buzzing people into the whole building (and giving them access) if I have it in my apt. We have a courtyard, and I think I would kill all the grass and flowers if I had my belongings and people trampling on the grass all day. There's a very small bit of grass in front of my bldg, but again, I think my landlord would not be happy with the damage to the grass which is very well maintained.

I really need some good suggestions! Is anyone in Lincoln Square/North Ctr. thinking of having a yard sale or garage sale soon? Would you have some extra space, and I could pay you, barter, or work something out with you? I have too much stuff to bring it to a flea market. I am a friendly, considerate person, and we'd be happy to work something out with a neighbors or group of neighbors. Really need to sell some things soon. Thank you for any suggestions you may have!!!

Julie, Tried to PM you. Can you turn your EB email on? Thanks!

  • Me! I really want to have a sale and have been trying to recruit (coerce/bribe/beg) my friends as I can't do it solo. Message me if interested. I'm around California and Diversey area, and have a truck to transport anything.

Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • What time was this? And, were you walking or on a bike?

  • What time was it and in what direction? As exact as possible and perhaps I can pull coverage from our cameras

Looking for steel deck contractors

Hi,

We are thinking about adding a deck onto our residence and wondered if any neighbors out there had a good experience with contractors who install steel decks.

TIA (which my teenage nephew tells me is short for "Thanks in advance").

  • SBloom architect, dad and a half, 25 years north side

Since the wood porch collapse disaster, the City rewrote and upgraded the building requirements for wood porches which made constructing wood porches considerably more expensive. Steel decks are still more expensive, but when you factor in life cycle maintenance costs, steel is now competitive. I'm hoping I don't get a mini stroke when the bids come back.

Also, If you use steel, the deck can be built tighter to the lot line. According to code, wood decks need to be 6' from the lot line.

  • We rebuilt our wood deck a few years ago - it was a pain. The requirements are really strict now, and were so recently changed that our contractor didn't really understand them (he was a crummy contractor too, that didn't help) and we kept getting conflicting info from the inspectors. I don't doubt steel decks are competitive now. The only downside would be, there are probably less contractors that do them, so it may be hard to get good quotes.

Police Deployment practices have to change

Yesterday afternoon my friend and I were bike riding down Elston by Division when we came across a two car head on collission. We stopped to check on people and were told that 911 had been called at least 20 minutes earlier but there was no sign of them even though there is a police and fire station on Division at Larrabee literally minutes away. There were no obvious injuries but the woman responsible for the accident seemed really out of it and said she had trouble breathing which caused her to swerve into incoming traffic. Traffic was backed up because one of the lanes was blocked and someone asked us to ride over to the stations since 911 had already been called a few times so we did. As we were riding over, a police car went by on Division literally about 100 yards from us. We tried to flag down but he didn't see us.
We got over to the station and imagine our surprise when they told us there was nothing they could do because the location was out of their district. They looked it up and could see that the calls had been entered but all the available units in the neighboring district were currently occupied. Once they were free, someone would get over there.
I'll admit that I really don't undertand how the whole 911/district situation works but to have police officers and fire trucks within minutes of an accident scene not being deployed there to deal with the situation just because it is over their district line is beyond ridiculous.

Street Cleaning Question

I've always always always had parking....and now I'm parking on the street. With these street cleaning signs posted on one side of the street....that means I shouldn't park on that side of the street during the day and time posted, right? I can park on the other side of the street that day and time and not get ticketed, right?

  • I just moved here from out of state and while I understand it's not winter yet (this does go along with the parking question from above-sort of), I see where it also says that you cannot park on the street if the snow is above 2 inches deep. I don't...

I just moved here from out of state and while I understand it's not winter yet (this does go along with the parking question from above-sort of), I see where it also says that you cannot park on the street if the snow is above 2 inches deep. I don't understand this, as sometimes snow storms hit in the middle of the night here and will I have to rush out and try and move my car to another spot? Or is it still ok to park there prior to a snow storm? I'm so confused.

  • Read this article regarding Snow Route signs: http://theexpiredmeter.com/2008/12/the-lowdown-on-snow-routes/

Essentially, you can be ticketed and towed when the snow is more than 2" deep at these locations. It doesn't matter if there wasn't any snow when you parked your car.

request the tree be placed. Is Green spray paint on curb

About a month ago, I requested that a tree be planted in front of my house. Last week streets & san drove by and spray painted a green line on the curb where I requested the tree be placed. Is this what the green spray paint means, or is this something else?
I'm thinking that it must be something else b/c Forestry service would be the ones planting a tree, not streets & sans, right?

Latitude changed hands

So, a coworker of mine mentioned to me that the Latitude bar/restaurant has recently changed ownership. I guess it's in the process of going through a rebranding and will be run entirely differently then in the past. My coworker knows the owners of the new establishment and has said that they have a much better food menu and will have a very good beer selection over time.

Has anyone been there in the past few weeks? I had only been there once before and service wasn't very good. I'd be excited to hear things are better with the new owners.

Awful water taste - Chicago apt bldg

Hi - I live in an old Chicago apartment bldg and have lived here for a number of years. The bldg is probably 80 years old. Recently the tap water has tasted really bad. I cannot figure out what it is, but it really doesn't taste right...a strong flavor. I know I should invest in a good water filter but have not been able to afford that. Any ideas where I can find out what's going on with my water? My landlord is relatively OK, but is very hesitant to invest any time or money unless absolutely necessary....

I can always taste filtered vs non filtered. I don't see it as a waste of money whatsoever, nor do I find it to be expensive. Filters produce measurable, scientific changes measured to NSF/ANSI standards. Your basic water filter is tested against ANSI 42 for appearance and often ANSI 53 for health contaminant standards, and you can look up exactly what, scientifically speaking they are filtering.

If you're running the water and the taste is changing after a minute, it's likely because your pipes are galvanized and full of 50 years of rust and crud. Your incoming water pipe into your house is likely also made of lead. Your basic pur/brita PITCHER does not filter lead though. However, the faucet mount ones they make do (both pur and brita), as well as a long list of other items. Also AFAIK Pur pitcher filters have a better particulate filter vs the Brita (they measure this by a "class" classification--again in the data sheets), which is also why the Pur filters take longer for the water to drip through though. If you are looking at Pur, skip the model where it's the largest one with the spigot that you flip for water--it has a design flaw where it creates an air lock that doesn't let the water actually get through the filter (literally hundreds of reviews complaining of this on amzn, not sure why they even sell it. learned the hard way o that one)

If you put a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, the chlorine will naturally dissipate without a filter but it takes a few days.

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

Thanks, everyone! Did not know this. Am using Brita now until I get a better filter. Thank you.

Do you recognize this cat?

Saw this kitty on The SW corner of Giddings & Hamilton. I couldn't get closes enough to see the tag but he did have a collar. I'm guessing "he" because orange tabby are almost always male. He had a white tipped tail.

I will also check lost cat posting online.

  • You're probably right. I'm guessing from his demeanor that he was used to being outdoors. Just wanted to make sure nobody was missing...

  • He belongs to someone in the apt building on the NE corner of Giddings & Hamilton. Definitely an outdoor cat. He's a pretty smart old tom, but I would steer clear. When he actually goes missing, the owner is quick to put signs up around the neighborhood.

* Am a great cook--healthy and tasty meals usually--but can also make the "comfort foods" we all love too.

* Some child care--as the eldest of 7, helped raise my younger siblings, plus recently I've taken care of my friends' kids when they've gone out for the evening & when they've gone to Europe for 2 weeks. Can provide references

* Have 20+ years in sales & marketing, so if you need some help with marketing your business--or just need someone to type your manuscript--happy to help.

* Some personal care assistance--worked in a hospital many years ago plus experience working with family members who have challenges (my 25 year old niece was born with a neural tube disorder and my aunt had ALS)--so could provide some assistance to you.

I'm a nonsmoker and I don't drink (food allergy). My cat is quiet and shy--and we are looking to move by August 1st. Look forward to meeting you!

  • I might be able to help you out. I live in Andersonville and am looking for someone to share my condo. Is there an email address where I can give you more info? Thanks.

  • If you click on the OPs name, you can send her an email. You'll find the link near the bottom/right of the screen.

  • I'm having trouble sending you an email via "EveryBlock." Basically, I have a two story condo, the entire second floor could be yours if there's interest. You'd have your own bedroom, bathroom, flat screen tv, entertaining space and office. I'm a 61-year old semi-retired single gay man. I have two small dogs which shouldn't be an issue if we keep the animals on their respective floors. If you have interest, I can be reached at stevekmetko@gmail.com. I don't smoke or drink.

Maintenance Entering Your Apartment Without Permission

I've lived at the same building for a better part of five years (Leland and Winchester) and came home to this (photo). My shoes RIGHT at my front door, all neatly lined up.
I left this morning through the front door so obviously no way I would have placed them there.
I came home through the back door this evening, and the second I saw them I freaked out a bit.
Nothing was stolen that I know of. My credit card and jewelry are here, TV is still here...so I'm assuming it was a creepy-ass maintenance person.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Who DOES THAT?!?! Fricking creepy to the n'th degree. UGH.

  • KJinEdgewater edgewater renter

What if your landlord's realtor not only does a showing without notice but then leaves your door unlocked? Yeah. True story.

  • In Chicago, a municipal ordinance [Chapter 5-12] known the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance ("RLTO" -- see http://www.tenants-rights.org/residential-landlord-tenant-ordinance/) prohibits entry to dwelling units absent exigent circumstances [i.e.,a broken water pipe, etc] or unless mngt provides a 48-hour notice. If entry is made to a dwelling unit, a written is required to be provided.
It's not a suggestion for building managers. It's a protection from managers and is a law. A law. A law.

Little Free Library

Dear neighbors,

We have just installed a Little Free Library on the corner of Sunnyside and Hamilton, and it will be filled with books by tonight (Sunday). We hope you will feel like it is yours as well, and enjoy the books and conversation.

What is the Little Free Library? It offers a way to share good things to read—favorite books from your childhood or books you would recommend to friends; books that teach, intrigue and engage you. It belongs to everybody—neighbors, friends, strangers who walk by. Take a book, add a book, pass it around to other friends and neighbors.

For more information on the LFL, go to littlefreelibrary.org.

  • I'm so happy you got one and there will be more free books in the neighborhood! We bought all the materials they suggested at Home Depot, and then had a handyman at the house doing a number of odd jobs and asked him to assemble the base and sink the main post into the ground with cement. The rest (installing the library onto the post) we did ourselves. (We are not that handy either...) Where will the new library be? Good luck!

  • Thanks...2000 block on Montrose.

Gunshots around 9:15 Thursday night

Did anyone else hear gunshots near the alley east of winnemac and damen? Sounded like about 5-6 shots. When I peeked out my blinds (like a scaredy cat) all I saw were rats scattering. Just curious if I was the only one who heard it.

I know for sure it was gun shots. There was someone in extreme close proximity to where the shots were released. The identity of the shooter was unknown to the person. And to protect the identity of the witness who was not the target, but by happen stance was very close to the incidence, I will not comment any futher.

Can we get some signs posted on the Northbound side telling people trying to get on at Ravenswood to GET OUT OF THE WAY of people exiting the train? Every day when I get off the train, there are around twenty to thirty people who stand in the middle of the platform waiting to board and it's a huge mess. With only one exit off the platform, it would be great if people trying to get on the train could wait at the far end of the platform - completely out of the way.

My point in posting this was to see if others were feeling the same frustrations as I was. I genuinely feel that if people were to wait at the north end of the platform, this wouldn't be a problem. The front cars on the train are rarely full. Obviously, this is a failure in Metra's part for only creating one exit, which I'm sure is a fire or safety hazard... particularly during the madness of Ravinia rush hour.

But I agree, simple courtesy from the passengers waiting to board would be great. Just line up against the fence to allow people to pass freely, instead of standing in the middle of the platform.

    Thanks for reading my rant.

  • Thanks for posting this. Getting out of that temporary station at rush hour is a fire hazard waiting to happen. It's especially bad when the Ravinia crowd obstructs the doors instead of letting the passengers off first, as you stated. At least the old station had more than one exit.

And if that new station ever opens, it looks like it might have more than one way out. IF it ever opens. Anyone know when that is?!?

My family and I were recently at Montrose beach (before the weekend of the riot) and we noticed an alarming amount of glass shards and trash blowing around. Since when did our beaches become dumping grounds? I spent most of my time collecting trash that others left behind as well as over 20 pieces of glass (which looked to be from broken beer bottles) as well as plastic utensils, broken plastic shovels, deflated balloons, etc. Some of the glass was even buried under the sand where my son was making a sand castle (luckily nobody was cut). When I asked the lifeguard why there was so much trash blowing around and left behind, she mentioned that the city has cut back on having the city come out to clean our beaches. Another problem is that the trash cans were at least 50 yards from where the water and I think people are too lazy to walk the distance to throw away their garbage. At the least, why can't the city provide signs that tell people they will get fined for littering (although who will stand watch if we can't even afford to have clean-up crews?)? Regardless, its a shame and extremely depressing. If people continue to ignore this problem (or continue to contribute to it) our beaches will be destroyed in a few years. Please help keep our lakefront clean. Any suggestions as to what we can do to help with this problem are welcome. I don't necessarily want to spend my weekends patrolling our beaches and cleaning up other peoples garbage. Has anyone else noticed this problem? What can we do? I don't plan on taking my family back to the beach this year since my recent experience was such a mess.

If they tell you they didn't authorize that, then if you see the guy again call the police. It is unfortunate but I have had to do that before. There was one guy running a scam using kids that impacted an organization I worked with. He would drop the kids off at a corner and have them sell candy bars for $3.00 saying it was fundraising for our organization's youth programs. We started getting notifications because people were calling very unhappy with us thinking that we were sending kids out to ask for money.

Anyone know if there are any of those clothes donations drop boxes around the neighborhood or anywhere else to donate old clothes/shoes?

  • CJL that's an old statistics mantra. Unless one is in the circle of Target's store placement strategies, we'll never really know, will we? And whether my offering information about Target is "worth bringing up" or not is "worth it," saying that was rather rude imo.

  • TamaleChica, are you privy to Target's business strategy? What is your evidence that Target is not opening this store because of the Route 11 bus, or that the Route 11 elimination was even considered at all by Target?

TamaleChica, are you privy to Target's business strategy? What is your evidence that Target is not opening this store because of the Route 11 bus, or that the Route 11 elimination was even considered at all by Target?
And I did not comment on the difficulty of shlepping items, nor did you. You only said that there was no way to get there except by car, which is not true.
Nobody has argued that the elimination of the route has not affected businesses along Lincoln. There is no reason to make up facts to support your argument.

HELP! Lost iLok (looks like a usb thumb drive)

On 7/15 I lost an iLok at Mariano's on Lawrence in their cafe. An iLok looks like a small USB thumb drive about 2" long. It holds expensive software authorizations. Its will not do anything unless you have my login information. So it is useless to anyone but me but very valuable to me. I am willing to offer a very generous reward to anyone who may have found it. Please contact me at 503-781-7889

Affordable Nail Salon?

Hello, I am on a tight budget but would like to get my nails done for my brothers wedding this weekend. Can anyone suggest a good place near Lincoln square? Thanks!

  • I like Hot Nails at 3554 W Irving Park Rd. Pedis are $20 and I tip $5 because they last so long. I only have to go once a month. I always go on a week day, thus more likely to get free parking in their back lot. Very clean place...I like it there very much.

  • My pedis at Spa O last two weeks easy, I just change the color then because my nails grow out.
