LOST KEYS....

Walked on the east side of 4800 block of Ashland yesterday between 12noon and 5pm, Wed. 3-25-14 and lost a set of keys. Did anyone find some? Can you please contact me here on EveryBlock?
Thanks for your help,

Also was at the bus stops:
Lawrence just west of Ashland, north side of street.
Lawrence at Western heading back east.

Walked to Brown line from Lawrence.

And then (Ugh!) downtown.
I've called CTA and Brown line stations.
.... probably hopeless... hoping for that amazing miracle...

Good luck! Earlier this year I lost a wallet and someone found and returned it, with everything in it, so here's hoping you have similar luck!

  • Long shot but were there any store card fobs on them?

  • Lynda Bean Long-time resident.

Thanks Patrick and Rachel for the moral support. Miracles happen... keys have been found! I'm so relieved... I didn't post a lot of info about what was on the set to protect myself from an unlikely hero. If people found keys I figured they'd want me to ID the set... I would've wanted them to ID something specific to me so I could verify they actually had them.

Thanks again. Grateful for this forum.

"Utility Customer Notification"

Anyone get a letter in the mail from "Clean Energy Option" which says, "Sign and return the enclosed form to run your home on clean energy"?

Anyone else notice that the return address is a rented mailbox at a UPS Store in the Loop?

  • Catbus Philosopher, Third-Class

CUB's word is that the company is real, but sketchy. It can't guarantee that YOU get your electricity from clean sources, and it will change your rate per kwh to an unspecified "variable" rate after three months.

Daycare Near Ravenswood

Hello,

I am looking for any day care suggestions in or near the Ravenswood area. Anything down Ashland or Damen would also work well as I commute that way for work.

I all really need are names as I will call them all and speak with them personally.

Thank you all in advance

  • Apple Tree Learning Center on 1733 W. Lawrence 1 blk east of Ravenswood. Highly recommended!

I am looking to switch my wireless service from Verizon (only because my office building is the only place in the world that doesn't get Verizon service). I'm just wondering what other wireless services people have that get good service in the city and outside of the city.

I use Credo, which piggybacks on the Sprint network, and it's pretty reliable in Chicago. I've had rare issues in older brick buildings facing away from the towers, but otherwise no trouble.

  • LGK

Ok, yeah, I was just wondering about Sprint. Nobody had mentioned it and I really don't see a lot of Sprint stores around. They are offering crazy deals like buying out your current contract and unlimited data. Wondering what other's experiences are with Sprint.

Just heard that there was a shooting at Winnemac park- is this true?

I just heard from someone that there was a shooting at Winnemac park and wondered if there are anymore details- gang related? Who shot at this person- officer? other person?

  • SC

Let's not jump to conclusions. People are all talking about Amundsen due to location. I believe this sad story is about someone who went to Senn high school though.

  • Was the caps meeting useful? Any more insight into this incident? Wasn't able to attend this one. Thanks

Hi neighbors! Do you rent out your garage / lot / parking space? We are considering renting out our unused spaces (in a property we own) but had some questions:

• Is there such a thing as a garage rental lease and do you use one?

• Do you require a security deposit? Did you need to take out supplemental insurance?

• Do you rent your space out month-to-month, week-to-week, or for longer periods?

• Where do you advertise your space? Craigslist? Word of mouth?

• Are there legal (or otherwise complicated) issues that we should consider in advance?

  • I rent out a garage space. I always do a contract for the space, you can find samples online to use for your purposes. I have the space prepaid for the term on 3/6/12 month basis...saves the hassle of trying to get monthly payments for something small. If someone can't...

Your homeowners insurance (provided it already is written up for renters, i.e. a multi-unit home) will cover the rental/issues. I put a sign out front and advertise on Craigslist. I am also very clear in the contract that the space is only for parking -- do not allow the space to be used for storage/repairs -- that can be a liability as well.

Pension Reform - Budget - Civic Federation - Tribune Editorial

I read the Op Ed piece in today's Tribune. Pretty nasty way to get a pension, if that is true (work one day, pay some credits a voila! $97K a year for life).

That got me wondering a few things. Normally, I go right to the idea "who should I blame for this mess" but that won't solve the underlying issue. I started to think through who "owns" approving pension plans in general and who might have an unbiased opinion...

That got me wondering a few things. Normally, I go right to the idea "who should I blame for this mess" but that won't solve the underlying issue. I started to think through who "owns" approving pension plans in general and who might have an unbiased opinion on the matter. I needed to find someplace, somewhere that would have a white paper I can read.

That lead me to the Civic Federation. (No affiliation in any way.)

I took a read about the FY2016 budget on the Civic Federation's website. Seems they have half a dozen or so fixes/ideas that will get us back on sensible fiscal footing.

I guess my question is, does anyone have any experience with their projections or their math? I am curious if they have the required rigor of analysis done to be considered a viable, reliable source for reform recommendations. Thoughts?

  • The Civic Federation is well-regarded as a credible source of rigorous analysis. Government entities and news organizations respect and seek CF's input.

New Home Construction Cost

We have a small single family home in North Center and looking to tear-down and rebuild. Has anyone gone through this process? We haven’t started searching for a contractor yet and don’t know what to expect in terms of cost. We have searched new construction in the area and would like to build a home similar to what is being built around us, a single family, framed home approx. 4000 square ft. Anyone know what the approx. cost would be from tear-down to move in ready? I know there are many variables so a range would help. We currently have no mortgage on our house and know taxes will increase. Thanks for your help.

J: "It looks like I have a cistern in my back yard. Basically looks like a sewer lid in the ground on the back of the house"

That you have the cistern doesn't mean it's still tied in--there could have been something done in the past. *usually*, if it was done properly, they would have backfilled the cistern with sand/gravel. So if you lift the cover and it's part/all full of sand/gravel, then it's out of service. Otherwise, you at least have to have someone take a look at it.

The cistern in my yard was (and as I understand it, in most cases, in NC/LS) originally basically a grease trap--the kitchen drains ran to a sewer line that ran out to the cistern, and then there was another sewer line out of the cistern (higher than the kitchen inflow) tying into the line that runs to the main under the street. So the heavy grease and food debris would settle into the bottom of the cistern, and the cleaner water flow out to the main. Ours has been all capped off and filled, but is still there in the backyard.

How long will construction at Addison and Western last?

Anyone know how long the construction will last at Addison & Western? It's quite a nightmare at the moment. Thanks!

  • Bus rapid transit. Makes so much more sense on Western than on Ashland.

  • Im in agreement. Especially because Western goes the entire length of the city. The Ashland bus stops at Irving. Not helpful to get to the city's northern neighborhoods by bus easily.

Also Western is a good middle ground between the blue line or the brown line on the north side. On the south side, just the orange line.

Looking for 3 bedroom unit to rent in or near lincoln square (less than $1500)

I have looked on Craigslist and thought I would ask here. I am interested in renting a 3 bedroom unit. An ideal unit would have parking, a dishwasher and an in-unit washer/dryer (or must have in building). We would prefer a unit facing the street, not on the first floor. Boundaries would be between Kedzie and Ashland and foster and Irving park. Thanks!

  • Like mentioned above you have more luck finding that near kezie. One of my friends pays $1000 for a 3 bedroom near montrose and kimball, and I've heard the rent is about the same all around that Albany park area.

  • @MalloryLN, actually the one near Sunnyside/Hermitage is overall lower rent than the one on Ainslie. Heat and hot water is included in the Sunnyside/Hermitage vs tenant is responsible for paying heat (may be even hot water) for the one on Ainslie.

Undecided voters...what would get you to vote for either Mayoral candidate?

On the fence? Any one thing that would sway your opinion?

I don't know that I'm voting for Chui or Rahm. For me, I'd reconsider Rahm if he immediately implemented a Mayoral 2-term limit; and if he convinced the aldermen to implement a 3-term-limit on Aldermen (grandfathering existing Aldermen, oh, of course), I think he'd run away with the race. So much of the trouble we're in now could've been avoided if we didn't have a life-time Mayor sitting on fixing the major issues whilst hoping for good luck to occasionally sweep them away.

  • Nora H 11year Lakeview resident, member ELVN.

For some reason I can't seem to paste the link to a You Tube interview of David Orr talking about Rahm and the city finances. Look for it and see how the books are cooked and more on TIF money. You certainly don't get the whole story from the Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune.

  • Rahm has done something positive and helpful. He closed a bunch of expensive and ineffective schools and caught heck for it. The city has a huge dark financial cloud hanging over it. It doesn't matter who is mayor. Noone wants the real solution.

Someone who can sew

Looking for someone to make some small panel curtains for my kitchen windows. Approximately 22" by 26" panels. Already have the fabric. They will be for tension/dowel rods, so it is a very basic project. Will pay labor, and other supplies.

Can anyone recommend a good (accurate) bus and train tracking app?

I've been using one called "Arrivals" for years and found it extremely helpful for getting around town
I had an issue with it a couple of weeks ago though, uninstalled it, went to install it again and couldn't find it when I searched for it.
I've used a few different ones since then and have found them all to be terribly inaccurate with regard to bus arrival time.
Some only seem to "work" when I'm actually standing AT the bus stop waiting. I want something I can check when I'm at home so I know when to leave.
Thanks in advance!

  • loraine t washington 5 yr. resident

I did not know it was so many trackers.

  • I developed QuickTrain for iOS. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quicktrain/id471653441?mt=8

The whole point is to quickly find when the next train is coming to the closest station to your current location. My goal was to get from app launch to results in under a second so that I could quickly determine if I needed to sprint to get under the gate at Rockwell. It's a niche product but well worth the $1.

CTA did have a nice web application called CTA ETA but they seemed to have discontinued it.

Lincoln Square 7-11 closing

I was at the 7-11 on Lawrence (just east of Western) today and was told that they are closing down permanently. The shelves and coolers are almost completely empty - the Slurpee machine wasn't even working. The employee said that there was some kind of problem with the lease but wasn't really sure. It is too bad that they are closing - it was a great location and the employees were always friendly.
