Tuft and Needle $50 Off, Paying it Forward

Hi Everyone,
I just moved to a new place from school and did a lot of research about mattresses. I found Tuft and Needle, who makes their mattresses in CA and ship direct so it is much cheaper. Reviews are wonderful (#1 on Amazon). I just ordered mine so will let you know how it goes. They offer a $50 off link to pass out to people once you buy. It will give you $50 off and me $50 off. You will see them all over the web if you google for them. They expire if/when the mattress has been fully refunded. Here's mine if anyone needs it:

Harassment at Damen and Lawrence.

Walking to the train going South on Damen on the East side if the street. Right after I passed through the crosswalk, a man at the bus stop yelled, "I HATE YOU!!!" Then he lunged at me and screamed, "I HATE YOUR UGLY QUEER A$S!!!"

I yelled that I'm calling the cops and he ran across Damen to get on the Lawrence bus going east.

A woman in her car rolled down her window and asked if I was ok. I continued to walk to the train.

He has blondish reddish hair, fair skin, and a mouth full of rotting teeth. Was about 6 feet tall.

If I had mace he would have really gotten it.

Beware. It was terrifying.

  • Ugh, sorry. Do report it, sometimes if known people have escalated from simply shouting at passerbys to lunging and physical assault then the police can actually do something. It isn't ideal, ideal would be if the police had a mental facility they could take them too instead of jail but if he's escalated it is time for something to be done. Even jail could at least temporarily get him on some med and maybe somewhat stable.

Need a good computer repair service

Hello fellow frustrated computer users:
I need to get my laptop repaired (keeps freezing, won't respond) and would like to know if you have any recommendations. I'm thinking of taking it to Computers Zone USA at 1134 W. Belmont. Has anyone used them? I live in North Center and want someplace I can get to by El. I can drive if I have to.
Thanks for any help.

Martial arts/Self defense

Hi,
Does anyone have any good, affordable recommendations for a place in the area to take martial art or self defense classes? Thank you!!

  • Bryan Duffy Apartment Locator & Problem Solver

Degerberg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts is great for beginners and all types. Gets you physically fit and mentally aware. More girls than guys in some of the classes, too. Classes 6 days a week at two locations to choose from. First class is free. After that its about $100-$120/month.

  • My son (6) has been taking classes at ATA in Ravenswood and I really like it there. It's not too "beefcakey" if you know what I mean, and they also keep running Groupons (There's one right now, look for Go2Karate) so you can try out a bunch of classes for next to nothing ($20 for 10 classes or $30 for 16 classes, uniform included).

If cost is the issue you might look for home based day cares that often have less waiting time than centers. Illinois Action for Children can print you a list of accredited child care in your area, ages they take, etc. and it includes home-based. You might need to be flexible and willing to drive a little ways to find care - I had to go out to Pulaski/Wilson basically but found a good place at a low cost that made it worth the drive. If you have a bit more cash than I did youu might try a nanny as often the price is the same for one or 2 kids. We had some people leave our daycare after the 2nd child because then cost became not much more to have a nanny.

Mike is correct, lines are very long for the good day care. Went with in home childcare because that turned out to be cheaper for us. You can get a nanny or an au pair depending on your needs. We went the nanny route and have had a wonderful experience with that (4+ yrs now)

Au Pairs (live in) $350+ a week 2+ kids (based on when we looked at this option)

A nanny can run anywhere from $400-$600+ per per week for 2 kids.

***Pros: In home so easier mornings/evenings. No need to get up early to prep kids to take them to daycare/pack bags/food/clothes etc. Just let the nanny in in the morning and he/she can take care of that as part of their daily routine. Meals cooked at home, great ratio, 2 kids to 1 care provider. Flexibility in hours and day to day schedule. My kids get to do a lot. Just yesterday they were at the beach; they go to Welles daily to play, the library, the book cellar for story time, Pickles Playroom for play time, Millennium Park downtown, museums, the zoo etc. The list is pretty long. Things that you don't get in a daycare environment. (I think that's a pro some would disagree) They also get to work through pre-school material at home under the tutelage of the nanny.

***Cons (potential): Less social interaction unless the nanny is a go getter with finding play dates. No shortage of play date options in LS.

All that being said, we only hire from reputable agencies. These agencies/groups will run full background checks and return the results to you; they will train in First Aid and CPR and make sure that their people are up to date on their certifications. We usually line up 5-10 potentials, and request face to face interviews in our home with the kids around and very carefully watch how they interact with the kids and with us. You want to be very clear on what you are looking for and do not be afraid to speak your mind and be very blunt. Get it all out upfront so there are no surprises going into it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Excellent, now the rooftop owners are suing the city. This costs all of us money. When

are they going to quit bellyaching and produce a product people will buy...without being parasitic? Look at the restaurants all around the field. Do they need to have line of sight? Seems like they view it as a right.
All I know is that it is wasteful to sue the city - and the taxpayers are left footing the bill.

If you are considering sending your child to Chappell Elementary please be aware that the Principal has a ZERO Tolerance Policy for not wearing a clean white shirt. Even if you have a note saying your washing machine is out of order and you send your child with a light gray or navy shirt - your child will be forced to change into a dirty, smelly shirt with writing in huge letters front and back - "LOANER". Even if your clothes are totally appropriate and you are in 1st grade. When I went to an LSC meeting to just bring this up - the Principal called 911 on me. That started to give me concerns and my suspicions were confirmed in May. My son is gone from the school so we can now speak up without fear of further retaliation. I am happy to meet with anyone personally to show all of the evidence I have. Please do not send your child to this school until the Principal is replaced. He is a threat to children and he has been manipulating the LSC. It is very difficult to even find out when the next LSC meeting is and how to contact anyone on the LSC or even get the minutes of the meetings. The Alderman and School Board have been contacted but due to the privacy of the children involved we all do not want this to have to go to court. Please help this school and the families that are really suffering from the fallout of his actions.

The best way to voice your concern is through Alderman O'Connor at ward40@cityofchicago.org. He is aware of the situation but says the more parents that can email and stand up against this absurd policy the easier it will be to remove him. There is no way to contact LSC members via school website or even find out dates of the meetings which are always during the day. Compare transparency of Waters Elementary to Chappell Elementary Website so you can see how hard he makes it for parents to complain about this.

How much to pay part-time childcare providers?

Hello neighbors. My husband and I live in Lincoln Square and are expecting our first child this fall (both exciting and terrifying). We've begun discussing our childcare needs and we think we'd like to have in-home care two days a week beginning in February. I've been researching rates for this type of childcare (whether hourly or weekly) without much luck. I'd love to hear about other parents' experiences. Many thanks!

Found an iPhone in Lincoln Square

I found an iPhone (older model, wide plug) on the sidewalk outside Lincoln Square Athletic Club this evening (Friday) around 5:40.

Message me with a description if you think it's yours, or call the number. I've plugged it in to recharge it. If I don't hear from anyone by tomorrow late morning I will likely take it to the Verizon store to see if they can unlock and return to the owner.

I recently moved my business to the Deagan building on Ravenswood and Berteau, and we're looking for a a designer that could come up with some great ideas and see those through to execution. It's a great space with huge lofted ceilings, but right now, it just feels a bit drab and empty. Thanks everyone.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF THE DOG BUT A PRETTY CLOSE MATCH. His ears and tail are a little longer.

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

  • If anyone is willing to meet over there some evening or on Saturday, I'd be happy to help try to catch him. Sounds like it may take a group effort.

  • Does anyone know if this is the same terrier recently found at Damen further south? That dog did not have a collar

As future tip, if you are going to encourage people to picnic and it's a huge gravel parking lot either have picnic tables besides where art projects are going on or volunteers themselves are sitting at and eating or tell people to bring their own chairs, tables, or blankets. Also, invite some food trucks or engage the neighboring business so people can have food handy.

Blanket and towel collection

They're for the dogs at Chicago Animal Care & Control, who recently lost a huge load of blankets when the washing machine broke. A blanket or towel can help provide a little comfort in a concrete cage, and the towels also help with bathing or when the dogs get muddy in playgroup.

Items can be dropped off until 8/25.

Thanks!

Has anyone had to do this in the past, and if so, would you mind sharing your total cost and your plumber's information if you'd recommend him.

We're just learned that we need to increase our main line due to a current renovation, and hoping to get the main line replaced late summer/early fall.

  • I'm unrelated to the Blantons, but highly recommend J. Blanton Plumbing as well. They did a bunch of work for us and it was top-notch. Plus they are great people to work with.

Around $7K to run copper from the B-Box (the valve by the sidewalk) to inside the house. Power Plumbing did an excellent job. The man that came to install the water meter commented that it was an excellent job.
